Terahertz spectroscopy of spin waves in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in high magnetic fields

We have studied the magnetic field dependence of far-infrared active magnetic modes in a single ferroelectric domain \BFO/ crystal at low temperature. The modes soften close to the critical field of 18.8\,T along the [001] (pseudocubic) axis, where the cycloidal structure changes to the homogeneous canted antiferromagnetic state and a new strong mode with linear field dependence appears that persists at least up to 31\,T. A microscopic model that includes two \DM/ interactions and easy-axis anisotropy describes closely both the zero-field spectroscopic modes as well as their splitting and evolution in a magnetic field. The good agreement of theory with experiment suggests that the proposed model provides the foundation for future technological applications of this multiferroic material.

Probing the Interplay between Quantum Charge Fluctuations and Magnetic Ordering in LuFe2O4

Ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials possess spontaneous electric and magnetic order, respectively, which can be switched by the corresponding applied electric and magnetic fields. Multiferroics combine these properties in a single material, providing an avenue for controlling electric polarization with a magnetic field and magnetism with an electric field. These materials have been intensively studied in recent years, both for their fundamental scientific interest as well as their potential applications in a broad range of magnetoelectric devices [1, 2, 3, 4]. However, the microscopic origins of magnetism and ferroelectricity are quite different, and the mechanisms producing strong coupling between them are not always well understood. Hence, gaining a deeper understanding of magnetoelectric coupling in these materials is the key to their rational design. Here, we use ultrafast optical spectroscopy to show that quantum charge fluctuations can govern the interplay between electric polarization and magnetic ordering in the charge-ordered multiferroic LuFe2O4.

Long wavelength magnetic and magnetoelectric excitations in the ferroelectric antiferromagnet BiFeO3

We present a terahertz spectroscopic study of magnetic excitations in ferroelectric antiferromagnet BiFeO3. We interpret the observed spectrum of long-wavelength magnetic resonance modes in terms of the normal modes of the material's cycloidal antiferromagnetic structure. We find that the modulated Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction leads to a splitting of the out-of-plane resonance modes. We also assign one of the observed absorption lines to an electromagnon excitation that results from the magnetoelectric coupling between the ferroelectric polarization and the cycloidal magnetic structure of BiFeO3.

Hybridization and superconducting gaps in heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoGa5 probed via the dynamics of photoinduced quasiparticles

We have examined the relaxation of photoinduced quasiparticles in the heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoGa5. The deduced electron-phonon coupling constant is incompatible with the measured superconducting transition temperature Tc=18.5 K, which speaks against phonon-mediated superconducting pairing. Upon lowering the temperature, we observe an order-of-magnitude increase of the quasiparticle relaxation time in agreement with the phonon bottleneck scenario - evidence for the presence of a hybridization gap in the electronic density of states. The modification of photoinduced reflectance in the superconducting state is consistent with the heavy character of the quasiparticles that participate in Cooper pairing.

Ultrafast pump-probe study of phase separation and competing orders in the underdoped (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ superconductor

We report measurements of quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in the high-temperature superconductor (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in optimally doped, underdoped and undoped regimes. In the underdoped sample, spin-density wave (SDW) order forms at $\sim$85 K, followed by superconductivity at $\sim$ 28 K. We find the emergence of a normal-state order that suppresses SDW at a temperature $T^{\ast} \sim$ 60 K and argue that this normal-state order is a precursor to superconductivity.

Observation of Competing Order in a High-$T_{c}$ Superconductor with Femtosecond Optical Pulses

We present studies of the photoexcited quasiparticle dynamics in Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (Tl-2223) using femtosecond optical techniques. Deep into the superconducting state (below 40 K), a dramatic change occurs in the temporal dynamics associated with photoexcited quasiparticles rejoining the condensate. This is suggestive of entry into a coexistence phase which, as our analysis reveals, opens a gap in the density of states (in addition to the superconducting gap), and furthermore, competes with superconductivity resulting in a depression of the superconducting gap.
