Solution of the self-dual $Φ^4$ QFT-model on four-dimensional Moyal space

Previously the exact solution of the planar sector of the self-dual $Φ^4$-model on 4-dimensional Moyal space was established up to the solution of a Fredholm integral equation. This paper solves, for any coupling constant $λ>-\frac{1}π$, the Fredholm equation in terms of a hypergeometric function and thus completes the construction of the planar sector of the model. We prove that the interacting model has spectral dimension $4-2\frac{\arcsin(λπ)}π$ for $|λ|<\frac{1}π$. It is this dimension drop which for $λ>0$ avoids the triviality problem of the matricial $Φ^4_4$-model. We also establish the power series approximation of the Fredholm solution to all orders in $λ$. The appearing functions are hyperlogarithms defined by iterated integrals, here of alternating letters $0$ and $-1$. We identify the renormalisation parameter which gives the same normalisation as the ribbon graph expansion.

On a spectral flow formula for the homological index

Consider a selfadjoint unbounded operator D on a Hilbert space H and a one parameter norm continuous family of selfadjoint bounded operators {A(t)} parametrized by the real line. Then under certain conditions \cite{RS95} that include the assumption that the operators {D(t)= D+A(t)} all have discrete spectrum then the spectral flow along the path { D(t)} can be shown to be equal to the index of d/dt+D(t) when the latter is an unbounded Fredholm operator on L^2(R, H). In \cite{GLMST11} an investigation of the index=spectral flow question when the operators in the path may have some essential spectrum was started but under restrictive assumptions that rule out differential operators in general. In \cite{CGPST14a} the question of what happens when the Fredholm condition is dropped altogether was investigated. In these circumstances the Fredholm index is replaced by the Witten index. In this paper we take the investigation begun in \cite{CGPST14a} much further. We show how to generalise a formula known from the setting of the L^2 index theorem to the non-Fredholm setting. Our main theorem gives a trace formula relating the homological index of \cite{CaKa:TIH} to an integral formula that is known, for a path of selfadjoint Fredholms with compact resolvent and with unitarily equivalent endpoints, to compute spectral flow. Our formula however, applies to paths of selfadjoint non-Fredholm operators. We interpret this as indicating there is a generalisation of spectral flow to the non-Fredholm setting.

On the fixed point equation of a solvable 4D QFT model

The regularisation of the $λϕ^4_4$-model on noncommutative Moyal space gives rise to a solvable QFT model in which all correlation functions are expressed in terms of the solution of a fixed point problem. We prove that the non-linear operator for the logarithm of the original problem satisfies the assumptions of the Schauder fixed point theorem, thereby completing the solution of the QFT model.

Solvable 4D noncommutative QFT: phase transitions and quest for reflection positivity

We provide further analytical and first numerical results on the solvable $λϕ^4_4$-NCQFT model. We prove that for $λ<0$ the singular integral equation has a unique solution, whereas for $λ>0$ there is considerable freedom. Furthermore we provide integral formulae for partial derivatives of the matrix 2-point function, which are the key to investigate reflection positivity. The numerical implementation of these equations gives evidence for phase transitions. The derivative of the finite wavefunction renormalisation with respect to $λ$ is discontinuous at $λ_c \approx -0.39$. This leads to singularities in higher correlation functions for $λ<λ_c$. The phase $λ>0$ is not yet under control because of the freedom in the singular integral equation. Reflection positivity requires that the two-point function is Stieltjes. Implementing Widder's criteria for Stieltjes functions we exclude reflection positivity outside the phase $[λ_c,0]$. For the phase $λ_c<λ\leq 0$ we show that refining the discrete approximation we satisfy Widder to higher and higher order. This is clear evidence, albeit no proof, of reflection positivity in that phase.

Anomalies of Dirac type operators on Euclidean space

We develop by example a type of index theory for non-Fredholm operators. A general framework using cyclic homology for this notion of index was introduced in a separate article [CaKa13] where it may be seen to generalise earlier ideas of Carey-Pincus and Gesztesy-Simon on this problem. Motivated by an example in two dimensions in [BGG+87] we introduce in this paper a class of examples of Dirac type operators on R^{2n} that provide non-trivial examples of our homological approach. Our examples may be seen as extending old ideas about the notion of anomaly introduced by physicists to handle topological terms in quantum action principles with an important difference, namely we are dealing with purely geometric data that can be seen to arise from the continuous spectrum of our Dirac type operators.

Construction of the Φ^4_4-quantum field theory on noncommutative Moyal space

We review our recent construction of the $ϕ^4$-model on four-dimensional Moyal space. A milestone is the exact solution of the quartic matrix model $Z[E,J]=\int dΦ\exp(tr(JΦ- EΦ^2 -(λ/4) Φ^4))$ in terms of the solution of a non-linear equation for the 2-point function and the eigenvalues of $E$. The $β$-function vanishes identically. For the Moyal model, the theory of Carleman type singular integral equations reduces the construction to a fixed point problem. Its numerical solution reveals a second-order phase transition at $λ_c\approx-0.396$ and a phase transition of infinite order at $λ=0$. The resulting Schwinger functions in position space are symmetric and invariant under the full Euclidean group. They are only sensitive to diagonal matrix correlation functions, and clustering is violated. The Schwinger 2-point function is reflection positive iff the diagonal matrix 2-point function is a Stieltjes function. Numerically this seems to be the case for coupling constants $λ\in [λ_c,0]$.

Self-dual noncommutative ϕ^4-theory in four dimensions is a non-perturbatively solvable and non-trivial quantum field theory

We study quartic matrix models with partition function Z[E,J]=\int dM \exp(trace(JM-EM^2-(λ/4)M^4)). The integral is over the space of Hermitean NxN-matrices, the external matrix E encodes the dynamics, λ>0 is a scalar coupling constant and the matrix J is used to generate correlation functions. For E not a multiple of the identity matrix, we prove a universal algebraic recursion formula which gives all higher correlation functions in terms of the 2-point function and the distinct eigenvalues of E. The 2-point function itself satisfies a closed non-linear equation which must be solved case by case for given E. These results imply that if the 2-point function of a quartic matrix model is renormalisable by mass and wavefunction renormalisation, then the entire model is renormalisable and has vanishing β-function. As main application we prove that Euclidean ϕ^4-quantum field theory on four-dimensional Moyal space with harmonic propagation, taken at its self-duality point and in the infinite volume limit, is exactly solvable and non-trivial. This model is a quartic matrix model, where E has for N->\infty the same spectrum as the Laplace operator in 4 dimensions. Using the theory of singular integral equations of Carleman type we compute (for N->\infty and after renormalisation of E,λ) the free energy density (1/volume)\log(Z[E,J]/Z[E,0]) exactly in terms of the solution of a non-linear integral equation. Existence of a solution is proved via the Schauder fixed point theorem. The derivation of the non-linear integral equation relies on an assumption which we verified numerically for coupling constants 0<λ\leq (1/π).

Slavnov-Taylor identities, non-commutative gauge theories and infrared divergences

In this work we clarify some properties of the one-loop IR divergences in non-Abelian gauge field theories on non-commutative 4-dimensional Moyal space. Additionally, we derive the tree-level Slavnov-Taylor identities relating the two, three and four point functions, and verify their consistency with the divergent one-loop level results. We also discuss the special case of two dimensions.

Solvable limits of a 4D noncommutative QFT

In previous work we have shown that the (θ->\infty)-limit of ϕ^4_4-quantum field theory on noncommutative Moyal space is an exactly solvable matrix model. In this paper we translate these results to position space. We show that the Schwinger functions are symmetric and invariant under the full Euclidean group. The Schwinger functions only depend on matrix correlation functions at coinciding indices per topological sector, and clustering is violated. We prove that Osterwalder-Schrader reflection positivity of the Schwinger two-point function is equivalent to the question whether the diagonal matrix two-point function is a Stieltjes function. Numerical investigations suggest that this can at best be expected for the wrong sign of the coupling constant. The corresponding Wightman functions would describe particles which interact without momentum transfer. The theory differs from a free theory by the presence of non-trivial topological sectors.

Deformed Noncommutative Tori

We recall a construction of non-commutative algebras related to a one-parameter family of (deformed) spheres and tori, and show that in the case of tori, the *-algebras can be completed into C*-algebras isomorphic to the standard non-commutative torus. As the former was constructed in the context of matrix (or fuzzy) geometries, it provides an important link to the framework of non-commutative geometry, and opens up for a concrete way to study deformations of non-commutative tori. Furthermore, we show how the well-known fuzzy sphere and fuzzy torus can be obtained as formal scaling limits of finite-dimensional representations of the deformed algebras, and their projective modules are described together with connections of constant curvature.

8D-spectral triple on 4D-Moyal space and the vacuum of noncommutative gauge theory

Observing that the Hamiltonian of the renormalisable scalar field theory on 4-dimensional Moyal space A is the square of a Dirac operator D of spectral dimension 8, we complete (A,D) to a compact 8-dimensional spectral triple. We add another Connes-Lott copy and compute the spectral action of the corresponding U(1)-Yang-Mills-Higgs model. We find that in the Higgs potential the square ϕ^2 of the Higgs field is shifted to ϕ* ϕ+ const X_μ* X^μ, where X_μis the covariant coordinate. The classical field equations of our model imply that the vacuum is no longer given by a constant Higgs field, but both the Higgs and gauge fields receive non-constant vacuum expectation values.

Wick rotation for quantum field theories on degenerate Moyal space(-time)

In this paper the connection between quantum field theories on flat noncommutative space(-times) in Euclidean and Lorentzian signature is studied for the case that time is still commutative. By making use of the algebraic framework of quantum field theory and an analytic continuation of the symmetry groups which are compatible with the structure of Moyal space, a general correspondence between field theories on Euclidean space satisfying a time zero condition and quantum field theories on Moyal Minkowski space is presented ("Wick rotation"). It is then shown that field theories transferred to Moyal space(-time) by Rieffel deformation and warped convolution fit into this framework, and that the processes of Wick rotation and deformation commute.

Gauge fields on noncommutative geometries with curvature

It was shown recently that the lagrangian of the Grosse-Wulkenhaar model can be written as lagrangian of the scalar field propagating in a curved noncommutative space. In this interpretation, renormalizability of the model is related to the interaction with the background curvature which introduces explicit coordinate dependence in the action. In this paper we construct the $U_1$ gauge field on the same noncommutative space: since covariant derivatives contain coordinates, the Yang-Mills action is again coordinate dependent. To obtain a two-dimensional model we reduce to a subspace, which results in splitting of the degrees of freedom into a gauge and a scalar. We define the gauge fixing and show the BRST invariance of the quantum action.

Gauge Symmetry Breaking in Matrix Models

We argue that some features of the standard model, in particular the fermion assignment and symmetry breaking, can be obtained in matrix model which describes noncommutative gauge theory as well as gravity in an emergent way. The mechanism is based on the presence of some extra (matrix) dimensions. These extra dimensions are different from the usual ones which give to a noncommutative geometry of the Gronewold-Moyal type, and are reminiscent of the Connes-Lott model, although the action is very different.

preprint2010arXiv

Noncommutative gauge theory and symmetry breaking in matrix models

We show how the fields and particles of the standard model can be naturally realized in noncommutative gauge theory. Starting with a Yang-Mills matrix model in more than 4 dimensions, a SU(n) gauge theory on a Moyal-Weyl space arises with all matter and fields in the adjoint of the gauge group. We show how this gauge symmetry can be broken spontaneously down to SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Q (resp. SU(3)_c x U(1)_Q), which couples appropriately to all fields in the standard model. An additional U(1)_B gauge group arises which is anomalous at low energies, while the trace-U(1) sector is understood in terms of emergent gravity. A number of additional fields arise which we assume to be massive, in a pattern that is reminiscent of supersymmetry. The symmetry breaking might arise via spontaneously generated fuzzy spheres, in which case the mechanism is similar to brane constructions in string theory.

On Batalin-Vilkovisky Formalism of Non-Commutative Field Theories

We apply the BV formalism to non-commutative field theories, introduce BRST symmetry, and gauge-fix the models. Interestingly, we find that treating the full gauge symmetry in non-commutative models can lead to reducible gauge algebras. As one example we apply the formalism to the Connes-Lott two-point model. Finally, we offer a derivation of a superversion of the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral.

Loop Calculations for the Non-Commutative U(1) Gauge Field Model with Oscillator Term

Motivated by the success of the non-commutative scalar Grosse-Wulkenhaar model, a non-commutative U(1) gauge field theory including an oscillator-like term in the action has been put forward in arXiv:0705.4205. The aim of the current work is to analyze whether that action can lead to a fully renormalizable gauge model on non-commutative Euclidean space. In a first step, explicit one-loop graph computations are hence presented, and their results as well as necessary modifications of the action are successively discussed.

Noncommutative Deformations of Wightman Quantum Field Theories

Quantum field theories on noncommutative Minkowski space are studied in a model-independent setting by treating the noncommutativity as a deformation of quantum field theories on commutative space. Starting from an arbitrary Wightman theory, we consider special vacuum representations of its Weyl-Wigner deformed counterpart. In such representations, the effect of the noncommutativity on the basic structures of Wightman theory, in particular the covariance, locality and regularity properties of the fields, the structure of the Wightman functions, and the commutative limit, is analyzed. Despite the nonlocal structure introduced by the noncommutativity, the deformed quantum fields can still be localized in certain wedge-shaped regions, and may therefore be used to compute noncommutative corrections to two-particle S-matrix elements.

Quantum field theory on the degenerate Moyal space

We prove that the self-interacting scalar field on the four-dimensional degenerate Moyal plane is renormalisable to all orders when adding a suitable counterterm to the Lagrangean. Despite the apparent simplicity of the model, it raises several non trivial questions. Our result is a first step towards the definition of renormalisable quantum field theories on a non-commutative Minkowski space.

Renormalisation of ϕ^4-theory on noncommutative R^4 to all orders

We present the main ideas and techniques of the proof that the duality-covariant four-dimensional noncommutative ϕ^4-model is renormalisable to all orders. This includes the reformulation as a dynamical matrix model, the solution of the free theory by orthogonal polynomials as well as the renormalisation by flow equations involving power-counting theorems for ribbon graphs drawn on Riemann surfaces.

preprint2003arXiv

Renormalisation of ϕ^4-theory on noncommutative R^2 in the matrix base

As a first application of our renormalisation group approach to non-local matrix models [hep-th/0305066], we prove (super-)renormalisability of Euclidean two-dimensional noncommutative ϕ^4-theory. It is widely believed that this model is renormalisable in momentum space arguing that there would be logarithmic UV/IR-divergences only. Although momentum space Feynman graphs can indeed be computed to any loop order, the logarithmic UV/IR-divergence appears in the renormalised two-point function -- a hint that the renormalisation is not completed. In particular, it is impossible to define the squared mass as the value of the two-point function at vanishing momentum. In contrast, in our matrix approach the renormalised N-point functions are bounded everywhere and nevertheless rely on adjusting the mass only. We achieve this by introducing into the cut-off model a translation-invariance breaking regulator which is scaled to zero with the removal of the cut-off. The naive treatment without regulator would not lead to a renormalised theory.

A suggestion for an integrability notion for two dimensional spin systems

We suggest that trialgebraic symmetries migth be a sensible starting point for a notion of integrability for two dimensional spin systems. For a simple trialgebraic symmetry we give an explicit condition in terms of matrices which a Hamiltonian realizing such a symmetry has to satisfy and give an example of such a Hamiltonian which realizes a trialgebra recently given by the authors in another paper. Besides this, we also show that the same trialgebra can be realized on a kind of Fock space of q-oscillators, i.e. the suggested integrability concept gets via this symmetry a close connection to a kind of noncommutative quantum field theory, paralleling the relation between the integrability of spin chains and two dimensional conformal field theory.

Pair Production of Neutral Higgs Bosons through Noncommutative QED Interactions at Linear Colliders

We study the feasibility of detecting noncommutative (NC) QED through neutral Higgs boson (H) pair production at linear colliders (LC). This is based on the assumption that H interacts directly with photon in NCQED as suggested by symmetry considerations and strongly hinted by our previous study on π^0-photon interactions. We find the following striking features as compared to the standard model (SM) result: (1) generally larger cross sections for an NC scale of order 1 TeV; (2) completely different dependence on initial beam polarizations; (3) distinct distributions in the polar and azimuthal angles; and (4) day-night asymmetry due to the Earth's rotation. These will help to separate NC signals from those in the SM or other new physics at LC. We emphasize the importance of treating properly the Lorentz noninvariance problem and show how the impact of the Earth's rotation can be used as an advantage for our purpose of searching for NC signals.
