2D fuzzy Anti-de Sitter space from matrix models

We study the fuzzy hyperboloids AdS^2 and dS^2 as brane solutions in matrix models. The unitary representations of SO(2,1) required for quantum field theory are identified, and explicit formulae for their realization in terms of fuzzy wavefunctions are given. In a second part, we study the (A)dS^2 brane geometry and its dynamics, as governed by a suitable matrix model. In particular, we show that trace of the energy-momentum tensor of matter induces transversal perturbations of the brane and of the Ricci scalar. This leads to a linearized form of Henneaux-Teitelboim-type gravity, illustrating the mechanism of emergent gravity in matrix models.

Brane compactifications and 4-dimensional geometry in the IKKT model

We study in detail certain brane solutions with compact extra dimensions M^4 x K in the IKKT matrix model, with K being a two-dimensional rotating torus embedded in R^6. We focus on the compactification moduli and the fluctuations of K \subset R^6 and their physical significance. Mediated by the Poisson tensor, they contribute to the effective 4-dimensional metric on the brane, and thereby become gravitational degrees of freedom. We show that the zero modes corresponding to the global symmetries of the model lead to Ricci-flat 4-dimensional metric perturbations, wherever the energy-momentum tensor vanishes. Their coupling to the energy momentum tensor depends on the extrinsic curvature of the brane.

Generalized Fuzzy Torus and its Modular Properties

We consider a generalization of the basic fuzzy torus to a fuzzy torus with non-trivial modular parameter, based on a finite matrix algebra. We discuss the modular properties of this fuzzy torus, and compute the matrix Laplacian for a scalar field. In the semi-classical limit, the generalized fuzzy torus can be used to approximate a generic commutative torus represented by two generic vectors in the complex plane, with generic modular parameter $τ$. The effective classical geometry and the spectrum of the Laplacian are correctly reproduced in the limit. The spectrum of a matrix Dirac operator is also computed.

Gravity and compactified branes in matrix models

A mechanism for emergent gravity on brane solutions in Yang-Mills matrix models is exhibited. Newtonian gravity and a partial relation between the Einstein tensor and the energy-momentum tensor can arise from the basic matrix model action, without invoking an Einstein-Hilbert-type term. The key requirements are compactified extra dimensions with extrinsic curvature M^4 x K \subset R^D and split noncommutativity, with a Poisson tensor θ^{ab} linking the compact with the noncompact directions. The moduli of the compactification provide the dominant degrees of freedom for gravity, which are transmitted to the 4 noncompact directions via the Poisson tensor. The effective Newton constant is determined by the scale of noncommutativity and the compactification. This gravity theory is well suited for quantization, and argued to be perturbatively finite for the IKKT model. Since no compactification of the target space is needed, it might provide a way to avoid the landscape problem in string theory.

Non-commutative geometry and matrix models

These notes provide an introduction to the noncommutative matrix geometry which arises within matrix models of Yang-Mills type. Starting from basic examples of compact fuzzy spaces, a general notion of embedded noncommutative spaces (branes) is formulated, and their effective Riemannian geometry is elaborated. This class of configurations is preserved under small deformations, and is therefore appropriate for matrix models. A realization of generic 4-dimensional geometries is sketched, and the relation with spectral geometry and with noncommutative gauge theory is explained. In a second part, dynamical aspects of these matrix geometries are discussed. The one-loop effective action for the maximally supersymmetric IKKT or IIB matrix model is discussed, which is well-behaved on 4-dimensional branes.

On Poisson geometries related to noncommutative emergent gravity

We study metric-compatible Poisson structures in the semi-classical limit of noncommutative emergent gravity. Space-time is realized as quantized symplectic submanifold embedded in R^D, whose effective metric depends on the embedding as well as on the Poisson structure. We study solutions of the equations of motion for the Poisson structure, focusing on a natural class of solutions such that the effective metric coincides with the embedding metric. This leads to i-(anti-) self-dual complexified Poisson structures in four space-time dimensions with Lorentzian signature. Solutions on manifolds with conformally flat metric are obtained and tools are developed which allow to systematically re-derive previous results, e.g. for the Schwarzschild metric. It turns out that the effective gauge coupling is related to the symplectic volume density, and may vary significantly over space-time. To avoid this problem, we consider in a second part space-time manifolds with compactified extra dimensions and split noncommutativity, where solutions with constant gauge coupling are obtained for several physically relevant geometries.

Orbifold matrix models and fuzzy extra dimensions

We revisit an orbifold matrix model obtained as a restriction of the type IIB matrix model on a Z_3-invariant sector. An investigation of its moduli space of vacua is performed and issues related to chiral gauge theory and gravity are discussed. Modifications of the orbifolded model triggered by Chern-Simons or mass deformations are also analyzed. Certain vacua of the modified models exhibit higher-dimensional behaviour with internal geometries related to fuzzy spheres.

Split noncommutativity and compactified brane solutions in matrix models

Solutions of the undeformed IKKT matrix model with structure R^{3,1} x K are presented, where the noncommutativity relates the compact with the non-compact space. The extra dimensions are stabilized by angular momentum, and the scales of K are generic moduli of the solutions. Explicit solutions are given for K= T^2, K= T^4, K = S^2 x T^2 and K = S^2 x S^2. Infinite towers of Kaluza-Klein modes may arise in some directions, along with an effective UV cutoff on the non-compact space. Deformations of these solutions carry NC gauge theory coupled to (emergent) gravity. Analogous solutions of the BFSS model are also given.

The curvature of branes, currents and gravity in matrix models

The curvature of brane solutions in Yang-Mills matrix models is expressed in terms of conserved currents associated with global symmetries of the model. This implies a relation between the Ricci tensor and the energy-momentum tensor due to the basic matrix model action, without invoking an Einstein-Hilbert term. The coupling is governed by the extrinsic curvature of the brane embedding, which arises naturally for compactified brane solutions. The effective gravity on the brane is thereby related to the compactification moduli, and protected from quantum corrections due to the relation with global symmetries.

Emergent Geometry and Gravity from Matrix Models: an Introduction

A introductory review to emergent noncommutative gravity within Yang-Mills Matrix models is presented. Space-time is described as a noncommutative brane solution of the matrix model, i.e. as submanifold of \R^D. Fields and matter on the brane arise as fluctuations of the bosonic resp. fermionic matrices around such a background, and couple to an effective metric interpreted in terms of gravity. Suitable tools are provided for the description of the effective geometry in the semi-classical limit. The relation to noncommutative gauge theory and the role of UV/IR mixing is explained. Several types of geometries are identified, in particular "harmonic" and "Einstein" type of solutions. The physics of the harmonic branch is discussed in some detail, emphasizing the non-standard role of vacuum energy. This may provide new approach to some of the big puzzles in this context. The IKKT model with D=10 and close relatives are singled out as promising candidates for a quantum theory of fundamental interactions including gravity.

Fuzzy extra dimensions and particle physics models

In the present contribution the construction of particle physics models in theories with fuzzy extra dimensions is discussed. We focus on a bottom-up approach where the structure of a higher-dimensional theory arises within ordinary four-dimensional field theory via an appropriate mechanism based on spontaneous symmetry breaking. Subsequently, possible ways to obtain particle physics models with realistic spectrum in this framework are exhibited.

Intersecting branes and a standard model realization in matrix models

We consider intersecting brane solutions of the type IIB matrix model. It is shown that fermionic zero-modes arise on such backgrounds, localized at the brane intersections. They lead to chiral fermions in four dimensions under certain conditions. Such configurations reproduce many of the welcome features in similar string-theoretic constructions. Therefore they can be used to construct semi-realistic particle physics models in the framework of Yang-Mills matrix models. In particular, we present a brane configuration which realizes the correct chiral spectrum of the standard model in the matrix model. Furthermore, the stability of intersecting branes is discussed by analyzing the 1-loop effective action. It is shown that intersecting branes may form a bound state for certain flux configurations. The four-dimensional geometry of the branes is generic, and determined by the (emergent) gravity sector of the matrix model.

On matrix geometry

The foundations of matrix geometry are discussed, which provides the basis for recent progress on the effective geometry and gravity in Yang-Mills matrix models. Basic examples lead to a notion of embedded noncommutative spaces (branes) with emergent Riemannian geometry. This class of configurations turns out to be preserved under small deformations, and is therefore appropriate for matrix models. The relation with spectral geometry is discussed. A possible realization of sufficiently generic 4-dimensional geometries as noncommutative branes in D=10 matrix models is sketched.

On the 1-loop effective action for the IKKT model and non-commutative branes

We study the one-loop effective action of the IKKT or IIB model on a 4-dimensional non-commutative brane background. The trace-U(1) sector is governed by non-commutativity, and leads - assuming no SUSY breaking - to a higher-derivative effective action. In contrast, the non-Abelian sector at low energies reduces to SU(n) N=4 Super-Yang-Mills on the brane, with a global SO(9,1) symmetry broken spontaneously by the background. In the Coulomb branch, we recover the leading contribution to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action, exhibiting a S^5 \times AdS^5 bulk geometry around a stack of branes. SUSY may be broken by compact extra dimensions M^4 x K, leading to an induced gravitational action on M^4 due to the trace-U(1) sector. The one-loop effective action is UV finite on such backgrounds, and the UV/IR mixing is non-pathological.

Curvature and Gravity Actions for Matrix Models

We show how gravitational actions, in particular the Einstein-Hilbert action, can be obtained from additional terms in Yang-Mills matrix models. This is consistent with recent results on induced gravitational actions in these matrix models, realizing space-time as 4-dimensional brane solutions. It opens up the possibility for a controlled non-perturbative description of gravity through simple matrix models, with interesting perspectives for the problem of vacuum energy. The relation with UV/IR mixing and non-commutative gauge theory is discussed.

Curvature and Gravity Actions for Matrix Models II: the case of general Poisson structure

We study the geometrical meaning of higher-order terms in matrix models of Yang-Mills type in the semi-classical limit, generalizing recent results arXiv:1003.4132 to the case of 4-dimensional space-time geometries with general Poisson structure. Such terms are expected to arise e.g. upon quantization of the IKKT-type models. We identify terms which depend only on the intrinsic geometry and curvature, including modified versions of the Einstein-Hilbert action, as well as terms which depend on the extrinsic curvature. Furthermore, a mechanism is found which implies that the effective metric G on the space-time brane M \subset R^D "almost" coincides with the induced metric g. Deviations from G=g are suppressed, and characterized by the would-be U(1) gauge field.

Emergent Gravity and Noncommutative Branes from Yang-Mills Matrix Models

The framework of emergent gravity arising from Yang-Mills matrix models is developed further, for general noncommutative branes embedded in R^D. The effective metric on the brane turns out to have a universal form reminiscent of the open string metric, depending on the dynamical Poisson structure and the embedding metric in R^D. A covariant form of the tree-level equations of motion is derived, and the Newtonian limit is discussed. This points to the necessity of branes in higher dimensions. The quantization is discussed qualitatively, which singles out the IKKT model as a prime candidate for a quantum theory of gravity coupled to matter. The Planck scale is then identified with the scale of N=4 SUSY breaking. A mechanism for avoiding the cosmological constant problem is exhibited.

Fermions and noncommutative emergent gravity II: Curved branes in extra dimensions

We study fermions coupled to Yang-Mills matrix models from the point of view of emergent gravity. The matrix model Dirac operator provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to the effective gravitational metric for general branes with nontrivial embedding, albeit with a non-standard spin connection. This generalizes previous results for 4-dimensional matrix models. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action of the effective metric, as well as additional terms which couple the Poisson tensor to the Riemann tensor, and a dilaton-like term.

preprint2010arXiv

Gauge Symmetry Breaking in Matrix Models

We argue that some features of the standard model, in particular the fermion assignment and symmetry breaking, can be obtained in matrix model which describes noncommutative gauge theory as well as gravity in an emergent way. The mechanism is based on the presence of some extra (matrix) dimensions. These extra dimensions are different from the usual ones which give to a noncommutative geometry of the Gronewold-Moyal type, and are reminiscent of the Connes-Lott model, although the action is very different.

Heat kernel expansion and induced action for the matrix model Dirac operator

We compute the quantum effective action induced by integrating out fermions in Yang-Mills matrix models on a 4-dimensional background, expanded in powers of a gauge-invariant UV cutoff. The resulting action is recast into the form of generalized matrix models, manifestly preserving the SO(D) symmetry of the bare action. This provides noncommutative (NC) analogs of the Seeley-de Witt coefficients for the emergent gravity which arises on NC branes, such as curvature terms. From the gauge theory point of view, this provides strong evidence that the NC N=4 SYM has a hidden SO(10) symmetry even at the quantum level, which is spontaneously broken by the space-time background. The geometrical view proves to be very powerful, and allows to predict non-trivial loop computations in the gauge theory.

Noncommutative gauge theory and symmetry breaking in matrix models

We show how the fields and particles of the standard model can be naturally realized in noncommutative gauge theory. Starting with a Yang-Mills matrix model in more than 4 dimensions, a SU(n) gauge theory on a Moyal-Weyl space arises with all matter and fields in the adjoint of the gauge group. We show how this gauge symmetry can be broken spontaneously down to SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Q (resp. SU(3)_c x U(1)_Q), which couples appropriately to all fields in the standard model. An additional U(1)_B gauge group arises which is anomalous at low energies, while the trace-U(1) sector is understood in terms of emergent gravity. A number of additional fields arise which we assume to be massive, in a pattern that is reminiscent of supersymmetry. The symmetry breaking might arise via spontaneously generated fuzzy spheres, in which case the mechanism is similar to brane constructions in string theory.

Orbifolds, fuzzy spheres and chiral fermions

Starting with a N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions with gauge group SU(3N) we perform an orbifold projection leading to a N=1 supersymmetric SU(N)^3 Yang-Mills theory with matter supermultiplets in bifundamental representations of the gauge group, which is chiral and anomaly free. Subsequently, we search for vacua of the projected theory which can be interpreted as spontaneously generated twisted fuzzy spheres. We show that by adding the appropriate soft supersymmetry breaking terms we can indeed reveal such vacua. Three cases are studied, where the gauge group is spontaneously broken further to the low-energy gauge groups SU(4)xSU(2)xSU(2), SU(4)^3 and SU(3)^3. Such models behave in intermediate scales as higher-dimensional theories with a finite Kaluza-Klein tower, while their low-energy physics is governed by the corresponding zero-modes and exhibit chirality in the fermionic sector. The most interesting case from the phenomenological point of view turns out to be the SU(3)^3 unified theory, which has several interesting features such as (i) it can be promoted to a finite theory, (ii) it breaks further spontaneously first to the MSSM and then to SU(3)xU(1)_{em} due to its own scalar sector, i.e. without the need of additional superfields and (iii) the corresponding vacua lead to spontaneously generated fuzzy spheres.

Schwarzschild Geometry Emerging from Matrix Models

We demonstrate how various geometries can emerge from Yang-Mills type matrix models with branes, and consider the examples of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstroem geometry. We provide an explicit embedding of these branes in R^{2,5} and R^{4,6}, as well as an appropriate Poisson resp. symplectic structure which determines the non-commutativity of space-time. The embedding is asymptotically flat with asymptotically constant θ^{μν} for large r, and therefore suitable for a generalization to many-body configurations. This is an illustration of our previous work arXiv:1003.4132, where we have shown how the Einstein-Hilbert action can be realized within such matrix models.

Covariant Field Equations, Gauge Fields and Conservation Laws from Yang-Mills Matrix Models

The effective geometry and the gravitational coupling of nonabelian gauge and scalar fields on generic NC branes in Yang-Mills matrix models is determined. Covariant field equations are derived from the basic matrix equations of motions, known as Yang-Mills algebra. Remarkably, the equations of motion for the Poisson structure and for the nonabelian gauge fields follow from a matrix Noether theorem, and are therefore protected from quantum corrections. This provides a transparent derivation and generalization of the effective action governing the SU(n) gauge fields obtained in [1], including the would-be topological term. In particular, the IKKT matrix model is capable of describing 4-dimensional NC space-times with a general effective metric. Metric deformations of flat Moyal-Weyl space are briefly discussed.

Fermions Coupled to Emergent Noncommutative Gravity

We study the coupling of fermions to Yang-Mills matrix models in the framework of emergent noncommutative gravity. It is shown that the matrix model action provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to gravity, albeit with a non-standard spin-connection. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action for on-shell geometries plus a dilaton-like term. This result explains UV/IR mixing as a gravity effect. It also illuminates why UV/IR mixing remains even in supersymmetric models, except in the N=4 case.

On the fermion spectrum of spontaneously generated fuzzy extra dimensions with fluxes

We consider certain vacua of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with the same field content as the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, resulting from potentials which break the N=4 supersymmetry as well as its global SO(6) symmetry down to SO(3) x SO(3). We show that the theory behaves at intermediate scales as Yang-Mills theory on M^4 x S^2 x S^2, where the extra dimensions are fuzzy spheres with magnetic fluxes. We determine in particular the structure of the zero modes due to the fluxes, which leads to low-energy mirror models.

Algebraic brane dynamics on SU(2): excitation spectra

We analyze the dynamics of D2-branes on SU(2) within a recently proposed matrix model, which works for finite radius of SU(2). The spectrum of single-brane excitations turns out to be free of tachyonic modes. It is similar to the spectrum found using DBI and CFT calculations, however the triplet of rotational zero modes is missing. This is attributed to a naive treatment of the quantum symmetries of the model. The mass of the lightest states connecting two different branes is also calculated, and found to be proportional to the arc length for small angles.

Quantum Anti-de Sitter space and sphere at roots of unity

An algebra of functions on q-deformed Anti-de Sitter space AdS_q^D is defined which is covariant under U_q(so(2,D-1)), for q a root of unity. The star-structure is studied in detail. The scalar fields have an intrinsic high-energy cutoff, and arise most naturally as fields on orbifolds AdS_q^D \times S^D/G if D is odd, and AdS_q^D \times S_χ^{2D-1}/G if D is even. Here G is a finite abelian group, and S_χ is a certain ``chiral sector'' of the classical sphere. Hilbert spaces of square integrable functions are discussed. Analogous results are found for the q-deformed sphere S_q^D.
