Tolerance Relations and Quantization

It is well known that "bad" quotient spaces (typically: non-Hausdorff) can be studied by associating to them the groupoid C*-algebra of an equivalence relation, that in the "nice" cases is Morita equivalent to the C*-algebra of continuous functions vanishing at infinity on the quotient space. It was recently proposed by A. Connes and W.D. van Suijlekom that a similar procedure for relations that are reflexive and symmetric but fail to be transitive (i.e. tolerance relations) leads to an operator system. In this paper we observe that such an operator system carries a natural product that, although in general non-associative, arises in a number of relevant examples. We relate this product to truncations of (C*-algebras of) topological spaces, discuss some geometric aspects and a connection with positive operator valued measures.

Asymptotic commutativity of quantized spaces: the case of $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$

We present a procedure for quantizing complex projective spaces $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$, $q\ge 1$, as well as construct relevant star products on these spaces. The quantization is made unique with the demand that it preserves the full isometry algebra of the metric. Although the isometry algebra, namely $su(p+1,q)$, is preserved by the quantization, the Killing vectors generating these isometries pick up quantum corrections. The quantization procedure is an extension of one applied recently to Euclidean $AdS_2$, where it was found that all quantum corrections to the Killing vectors vanish in the asymptotic limit, in addition to the result that the star product trivializes to pointwise product in the limit. In other words, the space is asymptotically anti-de Sitter making it a possible candidate for the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence principle. In this article, we find indications that the results for quantized Euclidean $AdS_2$ can be extended to quantized $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$, i.e., noncommutativity is restricted to a limited neighborhood of some origin, and these quantum spaces approach $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$ in the asymptotic limit.

The Momentum Spaces of $κ$-Minkowski noncommutative spacetime

A useful concept in the development of physical models on the $κ$-Minkowski noncommutative spacetime is that of a curved momentum space. This structure is not unique: several inequivalent momentum space geometries have been identified. Some are associated to a different assumption regarding the signature of spacetime (i.e. Lorentzian vs. Euclidean), but there are inequivalent momentum spaces that can be associated to the same signature and even the same group of symmetries. Moreover, in the literature there are two approaches to the definition of these momentum spaces, one based on the right- (or left-)invariant metrics on the Lie group generated by the $κ$-Minkowski algebra. The other is based on the construction of $5$-dimensional matrix representation of the $κ$-Minkowski coordinate algebra. Neither approach leads to a unique construction. Here, we find the relation between these two approaches and introduce a unified approach, capable of describing all momentum spaces, and identify the corresponding quantum group of spacetime symmetries. We reproduce known results and get a few new ones. In particular, we describe the three momentum spaces associated to the $κ$-Poincaré group, which are half of a de Sitter, anti-de Sitter or Minkowski space, and we identify what distinguishes them. Moreover, we find a new momentum space with the geometry of a light cone, associated to a $κ$-deformation of the Carroll group.

Effective cosmological constant induced by stochastic fluctuations of Newton's constant

We consider implications of the microscopic dynamics of spacetime for the evolution of cosmological models. We argue that quantum geometry effects may lead to stochastic fluctuations of the gravitational constant, which is thus considered as a macroscopic effective dynamical quantity. Consistency with Riemannian geometry entails the presence of a time-dependent dark energy term in the modified field equations, which can be expressed in terms of the dynamical gravitational constant. We suggest that the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe may be ascribed to quantum fluctuations in the geometry of spacetime rather than the vacuum energy from the matter sector.

Wick Rotation and Fermion Doubling in Noncommutative Geometry

In this paper, we discuss two features of the noncommmutative geometry and spectral action approach to the Standard Model: the fact that the model is inherently Euclidean, and that it requires a quadrupling of the fermionic degrees of freedom. We show how the two issues are intimately related. We give a precise prescription for the Wick rotation from the Euclidean theory to the Lorentzian one, eliminating the extra degrees of freedom. This requires not only projecting out mirror fermions, as has been done so far, and which leads to the correct Pfaffian, but also the elimination of the remaining extra degrees of freedom. The remaining doubling has to be removed in order to recover the correct Fock space of the physical (Lorentzian) theory. In order to get a Spin(1,3) invariant Lorentzian theory from a Spin(4) invariant Euclidean theory such an elimination must be performed after the Wick rotation. Differences between the Euclidean and Lorentzian case are described in detail, in a pedagogical way.

Green's Functions for Translation Invariant Star Products

We calculate the Green functions for a scalar field theory with quartic interactions for which the fields are multiplied with a generic translation invariant star product. Our analysis involves both noncommutative products, for which there is the canonical commutation relation among coordinates, and nonlocal commutative products. We give explicit expressions for the one-loop corrections to the two and four point functions. We find that the phenomenon of ultraviolet/infrared mixing is always a consequence of the presence of noncommuting variables. The commutative part of the product does not have the mixing.

Inconstant Planck's constant

Motivated by the Dirac idea that fundamental constant are dynamical variables and by conjectures on quantum structure of spacetime at small distances, we consider the possibility that Planck constant $\hbar$ is a time depending quantity, undergoing random gaussian fluctuations around its measured constant mean value, with variance $σ^2$ and a typical correlation timescale $Δt$. We consider the case of propagation of a free particle and a one--dimensional harmonic oscillator coherent state, and show that the time evolution in both cases is different from the standard behaviour. Finally, we discuss how interferometric experiments or exploiting coherent electromagnetic fields in a cavity may put effective bounds on the value of $τ= σ^2 Δt$.

Spectral action with zeta function regularization

In this paper we propose a novel definition of the bosonic spectral action using zeta function regularization, in order to address the issues of renormalizability and spectral dimensions. We compare the zeta spectral action with the usual (cutoff based) spectral action and discuss its origin, predictive power, stressing the importance of the issue of the three dimensionful fundamental constants, namely the cosmological constant, the Higgs vacuum expectation value, and the gravitational constant. We emphasize the fundamental role of the neutrino Majorana mass term for the structure of the bosonic action.

Deformations of the Canonical Commutation Relations and Metric Structures

Using Connes distance formula in noncommutative geometry, it is possible to retrieve the Euclidean distance from the canonical commutation relations of quantum mechanics. In this note, we study modifications of the distance induced by a deformation of the position-momentum commutation relations. We first consider the deformation coming from a cut-off in momentum space, then the one obtained by replacing the usual derivative on the real line with the h- and q-derivatives, respectively. In these various examples, some points turn out to be at infinite distance. We then show (on both the real line and the circle) how to approximate points by extended distributions that remain at finite distance. On the circle, this provides an explicit example of computation of the Wasserstein distance.

Matrix Geometries Emergent from a Point

We describe a categorical approach to finite noncommutative geometries. Objects in the category are spectral triples, rather than unitary equivalence classes as in other approaches. This enables to treat fluctuations of the metric and unitary equivalences on the same footing, as representatives of particular morphisms in this category. We then show how a matrix geometry (Moyal plane) emerges as a fluctuation from one point, and discuss some geometric aspects of this space.

Spectral geometry with a cut-off: topological and metric aspects

Inspired by regularization in quantum field theory, we study topological and metric properties of spaces in which a cut-off is introduced. We work in the framework of noncommutative geometry, and focus on Connes distance associated to a spectral triple (A, H, D). A high momentum (short distance) cut-off is implemented by the action of a projection P on the Dirac operator D and/or on the algebra A. This action induces two new distances. We individuate conditions making them equivalent to the original distance. We also study the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the set of truncated states, first for compact quantum metric spaces in the sense of Rieffel, then for arbitrary spectral triples. To this aim, we introduce a notion of "state with finite moment of order 1" for noncommutative algebras. We then focus on the commutative case, and show that the cut-off induces a minimal length between points, which is infinite if P has finite rank. When P is a spectral projection of $D$, we work out an approximation of points by non-pure states that are at finite distance from each other. On the circle, such approximations are given by Fejer probability distributions. Finally we apply the results to Moyal plane and the fuzzy sphere, obtained as Berezin quantization of the plane and the sphere respectively.

Unification of Coupling Constants, Dimension six Operators and the Spectral Action

We investigate whether inclusion of dimension six terms in the Standard Model lagrangean may cause the unification of the coupling constants at a scale comprised between 10^14 and 10^17 GeV. Particular choice of the dimension 6 couplings is motivated by the spectral action. Given the theoretical and phenomenological constraints, as well as recent data on the Higgs mass, we find that the unification is indeed possible, with a lower unification scale slightly favoured.

Grand Symmetry, Spectral Action, and the Higgs mass

In the context of the spectral action and the noncommutative geometry approach to the standard model, we build a model based on a larger symmetry. With this "grand symmetry" it is natural to have the scalar field necessary to obtain the Higgs mass in the vicinity of 126 GeV. This larger symmetry mixes gauge and spin degrees of freedom without introducing extra fermions. Requiring the noncommutative space to be an almost commutative geometry (i.e. the product of manifold by a finite dimensional internal space) gives conditions for the breaking of this grand symmetry to the standard model.

High energy bosons do not propagate

We discuss the propagation of bosons (scalars, gauge fields and gravitons) at high energy in the context of the spectral action. Using heat kernel techniques, we find that in the high-momentum limit the quadratic part of the action does not contain positive powers of the derivatives. We interpret this as the fact that the two point Green functions vanish for nearby points, where the proximity scale is given by the inverse of the cutoff.

Gauge and Poincare' Invariant Regularization and Hopf Symmetries

We consider the regularization of a gauge quantum field theory following a modification of the Polchinski proof based on the introduction of a cutoff function. We work with a Poincare' invariant deformation of the ordinary point-wise product of fields introduced by Ardalan, Arfaei, Ghasemkhani and Sadooghi, and show that it yields, through a limiting procedure of the cutoff functions, to a regularized theory, preserving all symmetries at every stage. The new gauge symmetry yields a new Hopf algebra with deformed co-structures, which is inequivalent to the standard one.

Noncommutative Field Theory: Numerical Analysis with the Fuzzy Disc

The fuzzy disc is a discretization of the algebra of functions on the two dimensional disc using finite matrices which preserves the action of the rotation group. We define a $φ^4$ scalar field theory on it and analyze numerically for three different limits for the rank of the matrix going to infinity. The numerical simulations reveal three different phases: uniform and disordered phases already the present in the commutative scalar field theory and a nonuniform ordered phase as a noncommutative effects. We have computed the transition curves between phases and their scaling. This is in agreement with studies on the fuzzy sphere, although the speed of convergence for the disc seems to be better. We have performed also three the limits for the theory in the cases of the theory going to the commutative plane or commutative disc. In this case the theory behaves differently, showing the intimate relationship between the nonuniform phase and noncommutative geometry.

Spectral Action from Anomalies

Starting from a theory of fermions moving in a fixed gauge and gravitational background we implement the scale invariance of the theory. Upon quantization the theory is anomalous but the anomaly can be cancelled by the addition of another term to the action. This term comes out to be basically the Chamseddine Connes spectral action introduced in the context of noncommutative geometry. An alternative realization of the dilaton may involve a collective scalar mode of all fermions accumulated in a {scale-noninvariant} dilaton action. The entire spectral action describes gauge and Higgs fields coupled with gravity. Here this action is coupled with a dilaton and we discuss how it relates to the transition from the radiation to the electroweak broken phase via condensation of Higgs fields.

Spectral action, Weyl anomaly and the Higgs-Dilaton potential

We show how the bosonic spectral action emerges from the fermionic action by the renormalization group flow in the presence of a dilaton and the Weyl anomaly. The induced action comes out to be basically the Chamseddine-Connes spectral action introduced in the context of noncommutative geometry. The entire spectral action describes gauge and Higgs fields coupled with gravity. We then consider the effective potential and show, that it has the desired features of a broken and an unbroken phase, with the roll down.

preprint2010arXiv

Bosonic Spectral Action Induced from Anomaly Cancelation

We show how (a slight modification of) the noncommutative geometry bosonic spectral action can be obtained by the cancelation of the scale anomaly of the fermionic action. In this sense the standard model coupled with gravity is induced by the quantum nature of the fermions. The regularization used is very natural in noncommutative geometry and puts the bosonic and fermionic action on a similar footing.

Gauge Symmetry Breaking in Matrix Models

We argue that some features of the standard model, in particular the fermion assignment and symmetry breaking, can be obtained in matrix model which describes noncommutative gauge theory as well as gravity in an emergent way. The mechanism is based on the presence of some extra (matrix) dimensions. These extra dimensions are different from the usual ones which give to a noncommutative geometry of the Gronewold-Moyal type, and are reminiscent of the Connes-Lott model, although the action is very different.

preprint2010arXiv

Noncommutative gauge theory and symmetry breaking in matrix models

We show how the fields and particles of the standard model can be naturally realized in noncommutative gauge theory. Starting with a Yang-Mills matrix model in more than 4 dimensions, a SU(n) gauge theory on a Moyal-Weyl space arises with all matter and fields in the adjoint of the gauge group. We show how this gauge symmetry can be broken spontaneously down to SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Q (resp. SU(3)_c x U(1)_Q), which couples appropriately to all fields in the standard model. An additional U(1)_B gauge group arises which is anomalous at low energies, while the trace-U(1) sector is understood in terms of emergent gravity. A number of additional fields arise which we assume to be massive, in a pattern that is reminiscent of supersymmetry. The symmetry breaking might arise via spontaneously generated fuzzy spheres, in which case the mechanism is similar to brane constructions in string theory.

Star-product in the presence of a monopole

We present a deformed star-product for a particle in the presence of a magnetic monopole. The product is obtained within a self-dual quantization-dequantization scheme, with the correspondence between classical observables and operators defined with the help of a quaternionic Hilbert space, following work by Emch and Jadczyk. The resulting product is well defined for a large class of complex functions and reproduces (at first order in hbar) the Poisson structure of the particle in the monopole field. The product is associative only for quantized monopole charges, thus incorporating Dirac's quantization requirement.

Noncommutative spacetime symmetries: Twist versus covariance

We prove that the Moyal product is covariant under linear affine spacetime transformations. From the covariance law, by introducing an $(x,Θ)$-space where the spacetime coordinates and the noncommutativity matrix components are on the same footing, we obtain a noncommutative representation of the affine algebra, its generators being differential operators in $(x,Θ)$-space. As a particular case, the Weyl Lie algebra is studied and known results for Weyl invariant noncommutative field theories are rederived in a nutshell. We also show that this covariance cannot be extended to spacetime transformations generated by differential operators whose coefficients are polynomials of order larger than one. We compare our approach with the twist-deformed enveloping algebra description of spacetime transformations.

A New Matrix Model for Noncommutative Field Theory

We describe a new regularization of quantum field theory on the noncommutative torus by means of one-dimensional matrix models. The construction is based on the Elliott-Evans inductive limit decomposition of the noncommutative torus algebra. The matrix trajectories are obtained via the expansion of fields in a basis of new noncommutative solitons described by projections and partial isometries. The matrix quantum mechanics are compared with the usual zero-dimensional matrix model regularizations and some applications are sketched.

Noncommutative Geometry and Spacetime Gauge Symmetries of String Theory

We illustrate the various ways in which the algebraic framework of noncommutative geometry naturally captures the short-distance spacetime properties of string theory. We describe the noncommutative spacetime constructed from a vertex operator algebra and show that its algebraic properties bear a striking resemblence to some structures appearing in M Theory, such as the noncommutative torus. We classify the inner automorphisms of the space and show how they naturally imply the conventional duality symmetries of the quantum geometry of spacetime. We examine the problem of constructing a universal gauge group which overlies all of the dynamical symmetries of the string spacetime. We also describe some aspects of toroidal compactifications with a light-like coordinate and show how certain generalized Kac-Moody symmetries, such as the Monster sporadic group, arise as gauge symmetries of the resulting spacetime and of superstring theories.
