The generator rank of subhomogeneous C*-algebras

We compute the generator rank of a subhomgeneous C*-algebra in terms of the covering dimension of the pieces of its primitive ideal space corresponding to irreducible representations of a fixed dimension. We deduce that every Z-stable ASH-algebra has generator rank one, which means that a generic element in such an algebra is a generator. This leads to a strong solution of the generator problem for classifiable, simple, nuclear C*-algebras: a generic element in each such algebra is a generator. Examples of Villadsen show that this is not the case for all separable, simple, nuclear C*-algebras.

Weighted homomorphisms between C*-algebras

We show that a bounded, linear map between C*-algebras is a weighted $\ast$-homomorphism (the central compression of a $\ast$-homomorphism) if and only if it preserves zero-products, range-orthogonality, and domain-orthogonality. It follows that a self-adjoint, bounded, linear map is a weighted $\ast$-homomorphism if and only if it preserves zero-products. As an application we show that a linear map between C*-algebras is completely positive, order zero in the sense of Winter-Zacharias if and only if it is positive and preserves zero-products.

Cuntz semigroups of ultraproduct C*-algebras

We prove that the category of abstract Cuntz semigroups is bicomplete. As a consequence, the category admits products and ultraproducts. We further show that the scaled Cuntz semigroup of the (ultra)product of a family of C*-algebras agrees with the (ultra)product of the scaled Cuntz semigroups of the involved C*-algebras. As applications of our results, we compute the non-stable K-Theory of general (ultra)products of C*-algebras and we characterize when ultraproducts are simple. We also give criteria that determine order properties of these objects, such as almost unperforation.

Preduals and complementation of spaces of bounded linear operators

For Banach spaces X and Y, we establish a natural bijection between preduals of Y and preduals of L(X,Y) that respect the right L(X)-module structure. If X is reflexive, it follows that there is a unique predual making L(X) into a dual Banach algebra. This removes the condition that X have the approximation property in a result of Daws. We further establish a natural bijection between projections that complement Y in its bidual and L(X)-linear projections that complement L(X,Y) in its bidual. It follows that Y is complemented in its bidual if and only if L(X,Y) is (either as a module or as a Banach space). Our results are new even in the well-studied case of isometric preduals.

Group algebras acting on $L^p$-spaces

For $p\in [1,\infty)$ we study representations of a locally compact group $G$ on $L^p$-spaces and $QSL^p$-spaces. The universal completions $F^p(G)$ and $F^p_{\mathrm{QS}}(G)$ of $L^1(G)$ with respect to these classes of representations (which were first considered by Phillips and Runde, respectively), can be regarded as analogs of the full group \ca{} of $G$ (which is the case $p=2$). We study these completions of $L^1(G)$ in relation to the algebra $F^p_λ(G)$ of $p$-pseudofunctions. We prove a characterization of group amenability in terms of certain canonical maps between these universal Banach algebras. In particular, $G$ is amenable if and only if $F^p_{\mathrm{QS}}(G)=F^p(G)=F^p_λ(G)$. One of our main results is that for $1\leq p< q\leq 2$, there is a canonical map $γ_{p,q}\colon F^p(G)\to F^q(G)$ which is contractive and has dense range. When $G$ is amenable, $γ_{p,q}$ is injective, and it is never surjective unless $G$ is finite. We use the maps $γ_{p,q}$ to show that when $G$ is discrete, all (or one) of the universal completions of $L^1(G)$ are amenable as a Banach algebras if and only if $G$ is amenable. Finally, we exhibit a family of examples showing that the characterizations of group amenability mentioned above cannot be extended to $L^p$-operator crossed products of topological spaces.

Banach algebras generated by an invertible isometry of an $L^p$-space

We provide a complete description of those Banach algebras that are generated by an invertible isometry of an $L^p$-space together with its inverse. Examples include the algebra $PF_p(\mathbb{Z})$ of $p$-pseudofunctions on $\mathbb{Z}$, the commutative $C^*$-algebra $C(S^1)$ and all of its quotients, as well as uncountably many `exotic' Banach algebras. We associate to each isometry of an $L^p$-space, a spectral invariant called `spectral configuration', which contains considerably more information than its spectrum as an operator. It is shown that the spectral configuration describes the isometric isomorphism type of the Banach algebra that the isometry generates together with its inverse. It follows from our analysis that these algebras are semisimple. With the exception of $PF_p(\mathbb{Z})$, they are all closed under continuous functional calculus, and their Gelfand transform is an isomorphism. As an application of our results, we show that Banach algebras that act on $L^1$-spaces are not closed under quotients. This answers the case $p=1$ of a question asked by Le Merdy 20 years ago.

The topological dimension of type I C*-algebras

While there is only one natural dimension concept for separable, metric spaces, the theory of dimension in noncommutative topology ramifies into different important concepts. To accommodate this, we introduce the abstract notion of a noncommutative dimension theory by proposing a natural set of axioms. These axioms are inspired by properties of commutative dimension theory, and they are for instance satisfied by the real and stable rank, the decomposition rank and the nuclear dimension. We add another theory to this list by showing that the topological dimension, as introduced by Brown and Pedersen, is a noncommutative dimension theory of type I C*-algebras. We also give estimates of the real and stable rank of a type I C*-algebra in terms of its topological dimension.

The generator problem for Z-stable C*-algebras

The generator problem was posed by Kadison in 1967, and it remains open until today. We provide a solution for the class of C*-algebras absorbing the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. More precisely, we show that every unital, separable, Z-stable C*-algebras A is singly generated, which means that there exists an element x in A that is not contained in any proper sub-C*-algebra of A. To give applications of our result, we observe that Z can be embedded into the reduced group C*-algebra of a discrete group that contains a non-cyclic, free subgroup. It follows that certain tensor products with reduced group C*-algebras are singly generated. In particular, the tensor product of two reduced free group C*-algebras is singly generated.

A characterization of semiprojectivity for commutative C*-algebras

Given a compact, metric space X, we show that the commutative C*-algebra C(X) is semiprojective if and only if X is an absolute neighborhood retract of dimension at most one. This confirms a conjecture of Blackadar. Generalizing to the non-unital setting, we derive a characterization of semiprojectivity for separable, commutative C*-algebras. As further application of our findings we verify two conjectures of Loring and Blackadar in the commutative case, and we give a partial answer to the question, when a commutative C*-algebra is weakly (semi-)projective.

The Cuntz Semigroup and Comparison of Open Projections

We show that a number of naturally occurring comparison relations on positive elements in a C*-algebra are equivalent to natural comparison properties of their corresponding open projections in the bidual of the C*-algebra. In particular we show that Cuntz comparison of positive elements corresponds to a comparison relation on open projections, that we call Cuntz comparison, and which is defined in terms of-and is weaker than-a comparison notion defined by Peligrad and Zsidó. The latter corresponds to a well-known comparison relation on positive elements defined by Blackadar. We show that Murray-von Neumann comparison of open projections corresponds to tracial comparison of the corresponding positive elements of the C*-algebra. We use these findings to give a new picture of the Cuntz semigroup.
