The Cuntz splice does not preserve $*$-isomorphism of Leavitt path algebras over $\mathbb{Z}$

We show that the Leavitt path algebras $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ and $L_{2-,\mathbb{Z}}$ are not isomorphic as $*$-algebras. There are two key ingredients in the proof. One is a partial algebraic translation of Matsumoto and Matui's result on diagonal preserving isomorphisms of Cuntz--Krieger algebras. The other is a complete description of the projections in $L_{\mathbb{Z}}(E)$ for $E$ a finite graph. This description is based on a generalization, due to Chris Smith, of the description of the unitaries in $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ given by Brownlowe and the second named author. The techniques generalize to a slightly larger class of rings than just $\mathbb{Z}$.

Geometric classification of unital graph C*-algebras of real rank zero

We generalize the classification result of Restorff on Cuntz-Krieger algebras to cover all unital graph C*-algebras with real rank zero, showing that Morita equivalence in this case is determined by ordered, filtered K-theory as conjectured by three of the authors. The classification result is geometric in the sense that it establishes that any Morita equivalence between C*(E) and C*(F) in this class can be realized by a sequence of moves leading from E to F in a way resembling the role of Reidemeister moves on knots. As a key technical step, we prove that the so-called Cuntz splice leaves unital graph C*-algebras invariant up to Morita equivalence. We note that we have recently found a way to generalize the results of the present paper to cover general unital graph C*-algebras. The improved methods needed render some parts of the present paper obsolete, and hence we do not intend to publish it. Instead, we will present a complete solution (drawing heavily on many of the methods presented here) in a forthcoming paper.

UCT-Kirchberg algebras have nuclear dimension one

We prove that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT class has nuclear dimension 1. We first show that Kirchberg 2-graph algebras with trivial $K_0$ and finite $K_1$ have nuclear dimension 1 by adapting a technique developed by Winter and Zacharias for Cuntz algebras. We then prove that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT class is a direct limit of 2-graph algebras to obtain our main theorem.

Almost commuting self-adjoint matrices --- the real and self-dual cases

We show that a pair of almost commuting self-adjoint, symmetric matrices is close to a pair of commuting self-adjoint, symmetric matrices (in a uniform way). Moreover we prove that the same holds with self-dual in place of symmetric. The notion of self-dual Hermitian matrices is important in physics when studying fermionic systems that have time reversal symmetry. Since a symmetric, self-adjoint matrix is real, we get a real version of Huaxin Lin's famous theorem on almost commuting matrices. Similarly the self-dual case gives a version for matrices over the quaternions. We prove analogous results for element of real C^*-algebras of "low rank." In particular, these stronger results apply to paths of almost commuting Hermitian matrices that are real or self-dual. Along the way we develop a theory of semiprojectivity for real C^*-algebras.

Almost commuting unitary matrices related to time reversal

The behavior of fermionic systems depends on the geometry of the system and the symmetry class of the Hamiltonian and observables. Almost commuting matrices arise from band-projected position observables in such systems. One expects the mathematical behavior of almost commuting Hermitian matrices to depend on two factors. One factor will be the approximate polynomial relations satisfied by the matrices. The other factor is what algebra the matrices are in, either the matrices over A for A the real numbers, A the complex numbers or A the algebra of quaternions. There are potential obstructions keeping k-tuples of almost commuting operators from being close to a commuting k-tuple. We consider two-dimensional geometries and so this obstruction lives in KO_{-2}(A). This obstruction corresponds to either the Chern number or spin Chern number in physics. We show that if this obstruction is the trivial element in K-theory then the approximation by commuting matrices is possible.

On a counterexample to a conjecture by Blackadar

Blackadar conjectured that if we have a split short-exact sequence 0 -> I -> A -> A/I -> 0 where I is semiprojective and A/I is isomorphic to the complex numbers, then A must be semiprojective. Eilers and Katsura have found a counterexample to this conjecture. Presumably Blackadar asked that the extension be split to make it more likely that semiprojectivity of I would imply semiprojectivity of A. But oddly enough, in all the counterexamples of Eilers and Katsura the quotient map from A to A/I is split. We will show how to modify their examples to find a non-semiprojective C*-algebra B with a semiprojective ideal J such that B/J is the complex numbers and the quotient map does not split.

A characterization of semiprojectivity for commutative C*-algebras

Given a compact, metric space X, we show that the commutative C*-algebra C(X) is semiprojective if and only if X is an absolute neighborhood retract of dimension at most one. This confirms a conjecture of Blackadar. Generalizing to the non-unital setting, we derive a characterization of semiprojectivity for separable, commutative C*-algebras. As further application of our findings we verify two conjectures of Loring and Blackadar in the commutative case, and we give a partial answer to the question, when a commutative C*-algebra is weakly (semi-)projective.

Amplified graph C*-algebras

We provide a complete invariant for graph C*-algebras which are amplified in the sense that whenever there is an edge between two vertices, there are infinitely many. The invariant used is the standard primitive ideal space adorned with a map into {-1,0,1,2,...}, and we prove that the classification result is strong in the sense that isomorphisms at the level of the invariant always lift. We extend the classification result to cover more graphs, and give a range result for the invariant (in the vein of Effros-Handelman-Shen) which is further used to prove that extensions of graph C*-algebras associated to amplified graphs are again graph C*-algebras of amplified graphs.
