Decomposable partial actions

We define the decomposition property for partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras. Decomposable partial systems appear naturally in practice, and many commonly occurring partial actions can be decomposed into partial actions with the decomposition property. For instance, any partial action of a finite group is an iterated extension of decomposable systems. Partial actions with the decomposition property are always globalizable and amenable, regardless of the acting group, and their globalization can be explicitly described in terms of certain global sub-systems. A direct computation of their crossed products is also carried out. We show that partial actions with the decomposition property behave in many ways like global actions of finite groups (even when the acting group is infinite), which makes their study particularly accessible. For example, there exists a canonical faithful conditional expectation onto the fixed point algebra, which is moreover a corner in the crossed product in a natural way. (Both of these facts are in general false for partial actions of finite groups.) As an application, we show that freeness of a topological partial action with the decomposition property is equivalent to its fixed point algebra being Morita equivalent to its crossed product. We also show by example that this fails for general partial actions of finite groups.

Partial C*-dynamics and Rokhlin dimension

We develop the notion of Rokhlin dimension for partial actions of finite groups, extending the well-established theory for global systems. The partial setting exhibits phenomena that cannot be expected for global actions, usually stemming from the fact that virtually all averaging arguments for finite group actions completely break down for partial systems. For example, fixed point algebra and crossed product are not in general Morita equivalent, and there is in general no local approximation of the crossed product $A\rtimes G$ by matrices over $A$. By using decomposition arguments for partial actions of finite groups, we show that a number of structural properties are preserved by formation of crossed products, including finite stable rank, finite nuclear dimension, and absorption of a strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebra. For partial actions with the Rokhlin property, being an AF-algebra is also preserved. Some of our results are new even in the global case. We also study the Rokhlin dimension of globalizable actions: while in general it differs from the Rokhlin dimension of its globalization, we show that they agree if the coefficient algebra is unital. For topological partial actions on spaces of finite covering dimension, we show that finiteness of the Rokhlin dimension is equivalent to freeness, thus providing a large class of examples to which our theory applies.

Weighted homomorphisms between C*-algebras

We show that a bounded, linear map between C*-algebras is a weighted $\ast$-homomorphism (the central compression of a $\ast$-homomorphism) if and only if it preserves zero-products, range-orthogonality, and domain-orthogonality. It follows that a self-adjoint, bounded, linear map is a weighted $\ast$-homomorphism if and only if it preserves zero-products. As an application we show that a linear map between C*-algebras is completely positive, order zero in the sense of Winter-Zacharias if and only if it is positive and preserves zero-products.

Circle actions on UHF-absorbing $C^*$-algebras

We study circle actions with the Rokhlin property, in relation to their restrictions to finite subgroups. We construct examples showing the following: the restriction of a circle action with the Rokhlin property (even on a real rank zero $C^*$-algebra), need not have the Rokhlin property; and even if every restriction of a given circle action has the Rokhlin property, the circle action itself need not have it. As a positive result, we show that the restriction of a circle action with the Rokhlin property to the subgroup $\mathbb{Z}_n$ has the Rokhlin property if the underlying algebra absorbs $M_{n^\infty}$. The condition on the algebra is also necessary in most cases of interest. Despite the fact that there are no circle actions with the Rokhlin property on UHF-algebras, we construct many such actions on certain UHF-absorbing simple AT-algebras. Additionally, we show that circle actions with the Rokhlin property on $\mathcal{O}_2$-absorbing $C^*$-algebras are generic, in a suitable sense.

Preduals and complementation of spaces of bounded linear operators

For Banach spaces X and Y, we establish a natural bijection between preduals of Y and preduals of L(X,Y) that respect the right L(X)-module structure. If X is reflexive, it follows that there is a unique predual making L(X) into a dual Banach algebra. This removes the condition that X have the approximation property in a result of Daws. We further establish a natural bijection between projections that complement Y in its bidual and L(X)-linear projections that complement L(X,Y) in its bidual. It follows that Y is complemented in its bidual if and only if L(X,Y) is (either as a module or as a Banach space). Our results are new even in the well-studied case of isometric preduals.

Strongly outer actions of amenable groups on $\mathcal{Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras

Let $A$ be a separable, unital, simple, $\mathcal{Z}$-stable, nuclear $C^*$-algebra, and let $α\colon G\to \mathrm{Aut}(A)$ be an action of a countable amenable group $G$. If the trace space $T(A)$ is a Bauer simplex and the action of $G$ on $\partial_eT(A)$ has finite orbits and Hausdorff orbit space, we show that $α$ is strongly outer if and only if $α\otimes\mathrm{id}_{\mathcal{Z}}$ has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. If $G$ is moreover residually finite, then these conditions are also equivalent to $α\otimes\mathrm{id}_{\mathcal{Z}}$ having finite Rokhlin dimension (in fact, at most 2). When the covering dimension of $\partial_eT(A)$ is finite, we prove that $α$ is cocycle conjugate to $α\otimes\mathrm{id}_{\mathcal{Z}}$. In particular, the equivalences above hold for $α$ in place of $α\otimes\mathrm{id}_{\mathcal{Z}}$.

Crossed products by compact group actions with the Rokhlin property

We present a systematic study of the structure of crossed products and fixed point algebras by compact group actions with the Rokhlin property on not necessarily unital C*-algebras. Our main technical result is the existence of an approximate homomorphism from the algebra to its subalgebra of fixed points, which is a left inverse for the canonical inclusion. Upon combining this with results regarding local approximations, we show that a number of classes characterized by inductive limit decompositions with weakly semiprojective building blocks, are closed under formation of crossed products by such actions. Similarly, in the presence of the Rokhlin property, if the algebra has any of the following properties, then so do the crossed product and the fixed point algebra: being a Kirchberg algebra, being simple and having tracial rank zero or one, having real rank zero, having stable rank one, absorbing a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra, satisfying the Universal Coefficient Theorem (in the simple, nuclear case), and being weakly semiprojective. The ideal structure of crossed products and fixed point algebras by Rokhlin actions is also studied. The methods of this paper unify, under a single conceptual approach, the work of a number of authors, who used rather different techniques. Our methods yield new results even in the well-studied case of finite group actions with the Rokhlin property.

Group algebras acting on $L^p$-spaces

For $p\in [1,\infty)$ we study representations of a locally compact group $G$ on $L^p$-spaces and $QSL^p$-spaces. The universal completions $F^p(G)$ and $F^p_{\mathrm{QS}}(G)$ of $L^1(G)$ with respect to these classes of representations (which were first considered by Phillips and Runde, respectively), can be regarded as analogs of the full group \ca{} of $G$ (which is the case $p=2$). We study these completions of $L^1(G)$ in relation to the algebra $F^p_λ(G)$ of $p$-pseudofunctions. We prove a characterization of group amenability in terms of certain canonical maps between these universal Banach algebras. In particular, $G$ is amenable if and only if $F^p_{\mathrm{QS}}(G)=F^p(G)=F^p_λ(G)$. One of our main results is that for $1\leq p< q\leq 2$, there is a canonical map $γ_{p,q}\colon F^p(G)\to F^q(G)$ which is contractive and has dense range. When $G$ is amenable, $γ_{p,q}$ is injective, and it is never surjective unless $G$ is finite. We use the maps $γ_{p,q}$ to show that when $G$ is discrete, all (or one) of the universal completions of $L^1(G)$ are amenable as a Banach algebras if and only if $G$ is amenable. Finally, we exhibit a family of examples showing that the characterizations of group amenability mentioned above cannot be extended to $L^p$-operator crossed products of topological spaces.

Nonclassifiability of UHF $L^p$-operator algebras

We prove that simple, separable, monotracial UHF $L^{p}$-operator algebras are not classifiable up to (complete) isomorphism using countable structures, such as K-theoretic data, as invariants. The same assertion holds even if one only considers UHF $L^{p}$-operator algebras of tensor product type obtained from a diagonal system of similarities. For $p=2$, it follows that separable nonselfadjoint UHF operator algebras are not classifiable by countable structures up to (complete) isomorphism. Our results, which answer a question of N. Christopher Phillips, rely on Borel complexity theory, and particularly Hjorth's theory of turbulence.

Banach algebras generated by an invertible isometry of an $L^p$-space

We provide a complete description of those Banach algebras that are generated by an invertible isometry of an $L^p$-space together with its inverse. Examples include the algebra $PF_p(\mathbb{Z})$ of $p$-pseudofunctions on $\mathbb{Z}$, the commutative $C^*$-algebra $C(S^1)$ and all of its quotients, as well as uncountably many `exotic' Banach algebras. We associate to each isometry of an $L^p$-space, a spectral invariant called `spectral configuration', which contains considerably more information than its spectrum as an operator. It is shown that the spectral configuration describes the isometric isomorphism type of the Banach algebra that the isometry generates together with its inverse. It follows from our analysis that these algebras are semisimple. With the exception of $PF_p(\mathbb{Z})$, they are all closed under continuous functional calculus, and their Gelfand transform is an isomorphism. As an application of our results, we show that Banach algebras that act on $L^1$-spaces are not closed under quotients. This answers the case $p=1$ of a question asked by Le Merdy 20 years ago.
