Topological States Enabled by Non-local Nonlinearity in Synthetic Dimensions

The interplay between topology and nonlinearity represents a central challenge in modern physics. Here, we investigate this interplay by considering a synthetic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice with all-to-all nonlocal interactions. We find that the distinctive nonlinearity maintains an effective chiral symmetry and leads to a quantized nonlinear winding and Berry phase, as corroborated by the developed Bogoliubov nonlinear adiabatic theory. Increasing nonlinearity drives a sequence of topological transitions signaled by the appearance of characteristic swallowtail band structures at intermediate interaction strengths and band swapping in the strong nonlinear regime. The band swapping results in quantized fractional windings and double-period Bloch oscillations that are closely related to discrete time crystals. Remarkably, even starting from a topologically trivial linear system, nonlocal nonlinearity can induce an emergent topological phase with fractional windings. Experimentally, our model can be realized using photons in a degenerate optical cavity with Rydberg-mediated interactions. Our results establish a rigorous framework and pave the way for exploring nonlinear topological phenomena and their applications in synthetic quantum platforms.

Spin-charge separation in a 1D Fermi gas with tunable interactions

Ultracold atoms confined to periodic potentials have proven to be a powerful tool for quantum simulation of complex many-body systems. We confine fermions to one-dimension to realize the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid model describing the highly collective nature of their low-energy excitations. We use Bragg spectroscopy to directly excite either the spin or charge wave for various strength of repulsive interaction. We observe that the velocity of the spin and charge excitations shift in opposite directions with increasing interaction, a hallmark of spin-charge separation. The excitation spectra are in quantitative agreement with the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, and furthermore, we find that the spin excitations become dispersive at large interaction, signaling the onset of the nonlinear Luttinger liquid regime.

Bose-Einstein condensates in an atom-optomechanical system with effective global non-uniform interaction

We consider a hybrid atom-optomechanical system consisting of a mechanical membrane inside an optical cavity and an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate outside the cavity. The condensate is confined in an optical lattice potential formed by a traveling laser beam reflected off one cavity mirror. We derive the cavity-mediated effective atom-atom interaction potential, and find that it is non-uniform, site-dependent, and does not decay as the interatomic distance increases. We show that the presence of this effective interaction breaks the Z$_2$ symmetry of the system and gives rise to new quantum phases and phase transitions. When the long-range interaction dominates, the condensate breaks the translation symmetry and turns into a novel self-organized lattice-like state with increasing particle densities for sites farther away from the cavity. We present the phase diagram of the system, and investigate the stabilities of different phases by calculating their respective excitation spectra. The system can serve as a platform to explore various self-organized phenomena induced by the long-range interactions.

Spin squeezing in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the spin squeezing in a spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with Raman induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Under the condition of two-photon resonance and weak Raman coupling strength, the system possesses two degenerate ground states, using which we construct an effective two-mode model. The Hamiltonian of the two-mode model takes the form of the one-axis-twisting Hamiltonian which is known to generate spin squeezing. More importantly, we show that the SOC provides a convenient control knob to adjust the spin nonlinearity responsible for spin squeezing. Specifically, the spin nonlinearity strength can be tuned to be comparable to the two-body density-density interaction, hence is much larger than the intrinsic spin-dependent interaction strength in conventional two-component BEC systems such as $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na in the absence of the SOC. We confirm the spin squeezing by carrying out a fully beyond-mean-field numerical calculation using the truncated Wigner method. Additionally, the experimental implementation is also discussed.

Deep Learning-Enhanced Variational Monte Carlo Method for Quantum Many-Body Physics

Artificial neural networks have been successfully incorporated into variational Monte Carlo method (VMC) to study quantum many-body systems. However, there have been few systematic studies of exploring quantum many-body physics using deep neural networks (DNNs), despite of the tremendous success enjoyed by DNNs in many other areas in recent years. One main challenge of implementing DNN in VMC is the inefficiency of optimizing such networks with large number of parameters. We introduce an importance sampling gradient optimization (ISGO) algorithm, which significantly improves the computational speed of training DNN in VMC. We design an efficient convolutional DNN architecture to compute the ground state of a one-dimensional (1D) SU($N$) spin chain. Our numerical results of the ground-state energies with up to 16 layers of DNN show excellent agreement with the Bethe-Ansatz exact solution. Furthermore, we also calculate the loop correlation function using the wave function obtained. Our work demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of applying DNNs to numerical quantum many-body calculations.

Bose-Fermi Mapping and Multi-Branch Spin Chain Model for Strongly Interacting Quantum Gases in One-Dimension: Dynamics and Collective Excitations

We show that the wave function of a one dimensional spinor gas with contact $s$-wave interaction, either bosonic or fermionic, can be mapped to the direct product of the wave function of a spinless Fermi gas with short-range $p$-wave interaction and that of a spin system governed by spin parity projection operators. Applying this mapping to strongly interacting spinor gases, we obtain a generalized spin chain model that captures both the static and dynamics properties of the system. Using this spin chain model, we investigate the breathing mode frequency and the quench dynamics of strongly interacting harmonically trapped spinor gases.

Effective p-wave interaction and topological superfluids in s-wave quantum gases

P-wave interaction in cold atoms may give rise to exotic topological superfluids. However, the realization of p-wave interaction in cold atom system is experimentally challenging. Here we propose a simple scheme to synthesize effective $p$-wave interaction in conventional $s$-wave interacting quantum gases. The key idea is to load atoms into spin-dependent optical lattice potential. Using two concrete examples involving spin-1/2 fermions, we show how the original system can be mapped into a model describing spinless fermions with nearest neighbor p-wave interaction, whose ground state can be a topological superfluid that supports Majorana fermions under proper conditions. Our proposal has the advantage that it does not require spin-orbit coupling or loading atoms onto higher orbitals, which is the key in earlier proposals to synthesize effective $p$-wave interaction in $s$-wave quantum gases, and may provide a completely new route for realizing $p$-wave topological superfluids.

Effects of Spin-Orbit Coupling on Jaynes-Cummings and Tavis-Cummings Models

We consider ultracold atoms inside a ring optical cavity that supports a single plane-wave mode. The cavity field, together with an external coherent laser field, drives a two-photon Raman transition between two internal pseudo-spin states of the atom. This gives rise to an effective coupling between atom's pseudo-spin and external center-of-mass (COM) motion. For the case of a single atom inside the cavity, We show how the spin-orbit coupling modifies the static and dynamic properties of the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model. In the case of many atoms in thermodynamic limit, we show that the spin-orbit coupling modifies the Dicke superradiance phase transition boundary and the non-superradiant normal phase may become reentrant in some regimes.

Harmonically Trapped Atoms with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We study harmonically trapped one-dimensional atoms subjected to an equal combination of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling induced by Raman transition. We first examine the wave function and the degeneracy of the single-particle ground state, followed by a study of two weakly interacting bosons or fermions. For the two-particle ground state, we focus on the effects of the interaction on the degeneracy, the spin density profiles, and the density-density correlation functions. Finally we show how these studies help us to understand the many-body properties of the system.

Dynamical topological phases in quenched spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gas

The spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gas provides a totally new platform to realize topological superfluids and related topological excitations. Previous studies have mainly focused on the properties of the ground state. Here we consider a two-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling subject to a perpendicular Zeeman field. For this system, we have found that its ground state topological structure is captured by the spin texture, which is readily measurable in experiments. We show that, when the Zeeman field is suddenly quenched, dynamical topological phases can be realized. More specifically, three post-quench dynamical phases can be identified according to the asymptotic behavior of the order parameter. In the undamped phase, a persistent oscillation of the order parameter may support a topological Floquet state with multiple edge states. In the Landau damped phase, the magnitude of the order parameter approaches a constant via a power-law decay, and this system can support a dynamical topological phase with a pair of edge states at the boundary. In the over-damped phase, the order parameter decays to zero exponentially although the condensate fraction remains finite. These predictions can be observed in the strong coupling regime of ultracold Fermi gas.

Itinerant chiral ferromagnetism in a trapped Rashba spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas

How ferromagnetic phases emerge in itinerant systems is an outstanding problem in quantum magnetism. Here we consider a repulsive two-component Fermi gas confined in a two dimensional isotropic harmonic potential and subject to a large Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling, whose single-particle dispersion can be tailored by adjusting the SO coupling strength. We show that the interplay among SO coupling, correlation effects and mean-field repulsion leads to a competition between ferromagnetic and non-magnetic phases. At intermediate interaction strengths, ferromagnetic phase emerges which can be well described by the mean-field Hartree-Fock theory; whereas at strong interaction strengths, a strongly correlated non-magnetic phase is favored due to the beyond-mean-field quantum correlation effects. Furthermore, the ferromagnetic phase of this system possesses a chiral current density induced by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, whose experimental signature is investigated.

Photon-Induced Spin-Orbit Coupling in Ultracold Atoms inside Optical Cavity

We consider an atom inside a ring cavity, where a plane-wave cavity field together with an external coherent laser beam induces a two-photon Raman transition between two hyperfine ground states of the atom. This cavity-assisted Raman transition induces effective coupling between atom's internal degrees of freedom and its center-of-mass motion. In~the meantime, atomic dynamics exerts a back-action to cavity photons. We investigate the properties of this system by adopting a mean-field and a full quantum approach, and show that the interplay between the atomic dynamics and the cavity field gives rise to intriguing nonlinear phenomena.

Spin-orbit-angular-momentum coupling in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a simple model with spin and orbit angular momentum coupling in a spin-1 Bose- Einstein condensate, where three internal atomic states are Raman coupled by a pair of co- propagating Laguerre-Gaussian beams. The resulting Raman transition imposes a transfer of orbital angular momentum between photons and the condensate in a spin-dependent way. Focusing on a regime where the single-particle ground state is nearly three-fold degenerate, we show that the weak interatomic interaction in the condensate produces a rich phase diagram, and that a many-body Rabi oscillation between two quantum phases can be induced by a sudden quench of the quadratic Zeeman shift. We carried out our calculations using both a variational method and a full numerical method, and found excellent agreement.

Strongly Interacting Quantum Gases in One-Dimensional Traps

Under the second-order degenerate perturbation theory, we show that the physics of $N$ particles with arbitrary spin confined in a one dimensional trap in the strongly interacting regime can be described by super-exchange interaction. An effective spin-chain Hamiltonian (non-translational-invariant Sutherland model) can be constructed from this procedure. For spin-1/2 particles, this model reduces to the non-translational-invariant Heisenberg model, where a transition between Heisenberg anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) states is expected to occur when the interaction strength is tuned from the strongly repulsive to the strongly attractive limit. We show that the FM and the AFM states can be distinguished in two different methods: the first is based on their distinct response to a spin-dependent magnetic gradient, and the second is based on their distinct momentum distribution. We confirm the validity of the spin-chain model by comparison with results obtained from several unbiased techniques

Two-component Bose-Hubbard model in an array of cavity polaritons

We propose a scheme which can realize an extended two-component Bose-Hubbard model using polaritons confined in an array of optical cavities. In addition to the density-dependent interactions, this model also contains nonlinear coupling terms between the two components of the polariton. Using a mean-field calculation, we obtain the phase diagram which shows how these terms affect the transition between the Mott insulator and the superfluid phase. In addition, we employ both a perturbation approach and an exact diagonalization method to gain more insights into the phase diagram.

Angular spin-orbit coupling in cold atoms

We propose coupling two internal atomic states using a pair of Raman beams operated in Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes with unequal phase windings. This generates a coupling between the atom's pseudo-spin and its orbital angular momentum. We analyze the single-particle properties of the system using realistic parameters and provide detailed studies of the spin texture of the ground state. Finally, we consider a weakly interacting atomic condensate subject to this angular spin-orbit coupling and show how the inter-atomic interactions modifies the single-particle physics.

Cavity-Assisted Dynamical Spin-Orbit Coupling in Cold Atoms

We consider ultracold atoms subjected to a cavity-assisted two-photon Raman transition. The Raman coupling gives rise to effective spin-orbit interaction which couples atom's center-of-mass motion to its pseudospin degrees of freedom. Meanwhile, the cavity photon is dynamically affected by the atom. This feedback between atom and photon leads to a dramatic modification of the atomic dispersion relation, and further leads to dynamical instability of the system. We propose to detect the change of cavity photon number as a direct way to demonstrate dynamical instability.

Gapless topological Fulde-Ferrell superfluidity induced by in-plane Zeeman field

Topological superfluids are recently discovered quantum matters that host topologically protected gapless edge states known as Majorana fermions - exotic quantum particles that act as their own anti-particles and obey non-Abelian statistics. Their realizations are believed to lie at the heart of future technologies such as fault-tolerant quantum computation. To date, the most efficient scheme to create topological superfluids and Majorana fermions is based on the Sau-Lutchyn-Tewari-Das Sarma model with a Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling on the }\textbf{\textit{x-y}}\textbf{ plane and a large out-of-plane (perpendicular) Zeeman field along the }\textbf{\textit{z}}\textbf{-direction. Here we propose an alternative setup, where the topological superfluid phase is driven by applying an in-plane Zeeman field. This scheme offers a number of new features, notably Cooper pairings at finite centre-of-mass momentum (i.e., Fulde-Ferrell pairing) and gapless excitations in the bulk. As a result, a novel gapless topological quantum matter with inhomogeneous pairing order parameter appears. It features unidirected Majorana surface states at boundaries, which propagate in the same direction and connect two Weyl nodes in the bulk. We demonstrate the emergence of such an exotic topological matter and the associated Majorana fermions in spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gases and determine its parameter space. The implementation of our scheme in semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures is briefly discussed.

Spin-orbit-coupled topological Fulde-Ferrell states of fermions in a harmonic trap

Motivated by recent experimental breakthroughs in generating spin-orbit coupling in ultracold Fermi gases using Raman laser beams, we present a systematic study of spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trap in the presence of an in-plane Zeeman field (which can be realized using a finite two-photon Raman detuning). We find that a topological Fulde-Ferrell state will emerge, featuring finite-momentum Cooper pairing and zero-energy Majorana excitations localized near the edge of the trap based on the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Genes (BdG) equations. We find analytically the wavefunctions of the Majorana modes. Finally using the time-dependent BdG we show how the finite-momentum pairing field manifests itself in the expansion dynamics of the atomic cloud.

Thermodynamic Properties of Rashba Spin-Orbit-Coupled Fermi Gas

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a superfluid Fermi gas subject to Rashba spin-orbit coupling and effective Zeeman field. We adopt a T-matrix scheme that takes beyond-mean-field effects, which are important for strongly interacting systems, into account. We focus on the calculation of two important quantities: the superfluid transition temperature and the isothermal compressibility. Our calculation shows very distinct influences of the out-of-plane and the in-plane Zeeman fields on the Fermi gas. We also confirm that the in-plane Zeeman field induces a Fulde-Ferrell superfluid below the critical temperature and an exotic finite-momentum pseudo-gap phase above the critical temperature.

Three-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases: Fulde-Ferrell pairing, Majorana fermions, Weyl fermions and gapless topological superfluidity

We theoretically investigate a three-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the presence of both out-of-plane and in-plane Zeeman fields. We show that, driven by a sufficiently large Zeeman field, either out-of-plane or in-plane, the superfluid phase of this system exhibits a number of interesting features, including inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell pairing, gapped or gapless topological order and exotic quasi-particle excitations known as Weyl fermions that have linear energy dispersions in momentum space (i.e., massless Dirac fermions). The topological superfluid phase can have either four or two topologically protected Weyl nodes. We present the phase diagrams at both zero and finite temperatures and discuss the possibility of their observation in an atomic Fermi gas with synthetic spin-orbit coupling. In this context, topological superfluid phases with an imperfect Rashba spin-orbit coupling are also studied.

Two-component polariton condensate in optical microcavity

We present a scheme for engineering the extended two-component Bose-Hubbard model using polariton condensate supported by optical microcavity. Compared to the usual two-component Bose-Hubbard model with only Kerr nonlinearity, our model includes a nonlinear tunneling term which depends on the number difference of the particle in the two modes. In the mean field treatment, this model is an analog to a nonrigid pendulum with a variable pendulum length whose sign can be also changed. We study the dynamic and ground state properties of this model and show that there exists a first-order phase transition as the strength of the nonlinear tunneling rate is varied. Furthermore, we propose a scheme to obtain the polariton condensate wave function.

Anderson Localization of cold atomic gases with effective spin-orbit interaction in a quasiperiodic optical lattice

We theoretically investigate the localization properties of a spin-orbit coupled spin-1/2 particle moving in a one-dimensional quasiperiodic potential, which can be experimentally implemented using cold atoms trapped in a quasiperiodic optical lattice potential and external laser fields. We present the phase diagram in the parameter space of the disorder strength and those related to the spin-orbit coupling. The phase diagram is verified via multifractal analysis of the atomic wavefunctions and the numerical simulation of diffusion dynamics. We found that spin-orbit coupling can lead to the spectra mixing (coexistence of extended and localized states) and the appearance of mobility edges.

Emergence of Topological and Strongly Correlated Ground States in trapped Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose Gases

We theoretically study an interacting few-body system of Rashba spin-orbit coupled two-component Bose gases confined in a harmonic trapping potential. We solve the interacting Hamiltonian at large Rashba coupling strengths using Exact Diagonalization scheme, and obtain the ground state phase diagram for a range of interatomic interactions and particle numbers. At small particle numbers, we observe that the bosons condense to an array of topological states with n+1/2 quantum angular momentum vortex configurations, where n = 0, 1, 2, 3... At large particle numbers, we observe two distinct regimes: at weaker interaction strengths, we obtain ground states with topological and symmetry properties that are consistent with mean-field theory computations; at stronger interaction strengths, we report the emergence of strongly correlated ground states.

Finite-Momentum Dimer Bound State in Spin-Orbit Coupled Fermi Gas

We investigate the two-body properties of a spin-1/2 Fermi gas subject to a spin-orbit coupling induced by laser fields. When an attractive s-wave interaction between unlike spins is present, the system may form a dimer bound state. Surprisingly, in the presence of a Zeeman field along the direction of the spin-orbit coupling, the bound state obtains finite center-of-mass mechanical momentum, whereas under the same condition but in the absence of the two-body interaction, the system has zero total momentum. This unusual result can be regarded as a consequence of the broken Galilean invariance by the spin-orbit coupling. Such a finite-momentum bound state will have profound effects on the many-body properties of the system.

We consider finite-momentum pairing of superfluid phase in ultracold Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling when subjected to an effective Zeeman field. Based on our two body and mean field many body calculations, we show that the Fulde-Ferrell type superfluid dominates in zero and finite temperature phase diagram. We examine the origin and properties of this novel phase systematically.

Many-body \textit{T}-matrix theory of a strongly interacting spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas: Momentum-resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy and fermionic pairing

Interacting Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling are responsible for many intriguing phenomena such as topological superfluids and Majorana fermions. Here we characterize theoretically fermionic pairing in a strongly interacting spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas, by using momentum-resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy. We develop a strong-coupling $T$-matrix theory and present a phase diagram near the unitary resonance limit. A smooth transition from atomic to molecular responses in the momentum-resolved spectroscopy is predicted, with a clear signature of anisotropic pairing at and below resonance. Our prediction with many-body pairing can be directly tested in a spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas of $^{40}$K or $^{6}$Li atoms near broad Feshbach resonances.

Radio-frequency spectroscopy of a strongly interacting spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas

We investigate experimentally and theoretically radio-frequency spectroscopy and pairing of a spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas of $^{40}$K atoms near a Feshbach resonance at $B_{0}=202.2$ G. Experimentally, the integrated spectroscopy is measured, showing characteristic blue and red shifts in the atomic and molecular responses, respectively, with increasing spin-orbit coupling. Theoretically, a smooth transition from atomic to molecular responses in the momentum-resolved spectroscopy is predicted, with a clear signature of anisotropic pairing at and below resonance. Our many-body prediction agrees qualitatively well with the observed spectroscopy near the Feshbach resonance.

Spin Mixing in Spinor Fermi Gases

We study a spinor fermionic system under the effect of spin-exchange interaction. We focus on the interplay between the spin-exchange interaction and the effective quadratic Zeeman shift. We examine the static and the dynamic properties of both two- and many-body system. We find that the spin-exchange interaction induces coherent Rabi oscillation in the two-body system, but the oscillation is quickly damped when the system is extended to the many-body case.

Universal impurity-induced bound state in topological superfluids

We predict a universal mid-gap bound state in topological superfluids, induced by either non-magnetic or magnetic impurities in the strong scattering limit. This universal state is similar to the lowest-energy Caroli-de Gennes-Martricon bound state in a vortex core, but is bound to localized impurities. We argue that the observation of such a universal bound state can be a clear signature for identifying topological superfluids. We theoretically examine our argument for a spin-orbit coupled ultracold atomic Fermi gas trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential, by performing extensive self-consistent calculations within the mean-field Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. A realistic scenario for observing universal bound state in ultracold $^{40}$K atoms is proposed.

Expansion of 1D polarized superfluids: The FFLO state reveals itself

We study the expansion dynamics of a one dimensional polarized Fermi gas after sudden release from confinement using both the mean-field Bogoliubov-de Gennes and the numerically exact Time-Evolving Block Decimation methods. Half-quantum vortex state in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate theoretically the condensate state and collective excitations of a two-component Bose gas in two-dimensional harmonic traps subject to isotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In the weakly interacting regime when the inter-species interaction is larger than the intra-species interaction ($g_{\uparrow\downarrow}>g$), we find that the condensate ground state has a half-quantum-angular-momentum vortex configuration with spatial rotational symmetry and skyrmion-type spin texture. Upon increasing the interatomic interaction beyond a threshold $g_{c}$, the ground state starts to involve higher-order angular momentum components and thus breaks the rotational symmetry. In the case of $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}<g$, the condensate becomes unstable towards the superposition of two degenerate half-quantum vortex states. Both instabilities (at $g>g_{c}$ and $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}<g$) can be determined by solving the Bogoliubov equations for collective density oscillations of the half-quantum vortex state, and by analyzing the softening of mode frequencies. We present the phase diagram as functions of the interatomic interactions and the spin-orbit coupling. In addition, we directly simulate the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation to examine the dynamical properties of the system. Finally, we investigate the stability of the half-quantum vortex state against both the trap anisotropy and anisotropy in the spin-orbit coupling term.

Probing Majorana fermions in spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gases

We examine theoretically the visualization of Majorana fermions in a two-dimensional trapped ultracold atomic Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling. By increasing an external Zeeman field, the trapped gas transits from non-topological to topological superfluid, via a mixed phase in which both types of superfluids coexist. We show that the zero-energy Majorana fermion, supported by the topological superfluid and localized at the vortex core, is clearly visible through (i) the core density and (ii) the local density of states, which are readily measurable in experiment. We present a realistic estimate on experimental parameters for ultracold $^{40}$K atoms.

Quantum phase transition of Bose-Einstein condensates on a ring nonlinear lattice

We study the phase transitions in a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate on a ring whose atomic scattering length is modulated periodically along the ring. By using a modified Bogoliubov method to treat such a nonlinear lattice in the mean field approximation, we find that the phase transitions are of different orders when the modulation period is 2 and greater than 2. We further perform a full quantum mechanical treatment based on the time-evolving block decimation algorithm which confirms the mean field results and reveals interesting quantum behavior of the system. Our studies yield important knowledge of competing mechanisms behind the phase transitions and the quantum nature of this system.

The former system has been realized very recently at Shanxi University [Wang et al., arXiv:1204.1887] and MIT [Cheuk et al., arXiv:1205.3483]. Spin-orbit coupled weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic traps

We investigate theoretically the phase diagram of a spin-orbit coupled Bose gas in two-dimensional harmonic traps. We show that discrete Landau levels develop at strong spin-orbit coupling. For a weakly interacting gas, quantum states with skyrmion lattice patterns emerge spontaneously and preserve either parity symmetry or combined parity-time-reversal symmetry. These phases can be readily observed by experimentally engineering spin-orbit coupling and interatomic interactions for a cloud of $^{87}$Rb atoms in a highly oblate trap.

Bogoliubov-de Gennes study of trapped spin-imbalanced unitary Fermi gases

It is quite common that several different phases exist simultaneously in a system of trapped quantum gases of ultra-cold atoms. One such example is the strongly-interacting Fermi gas with two imbalanced spin species, which has received a great amount of attention due to the possible presence of exotic superfluid phases. By employing novel numerical techniques and algorithms, we self-consistently solve the Bogoliubov de-Gennes equations, which describe Fermi superfluids in the mean-field framework. From this study, we investigate the novel phases of spin-imbalanced Fermi gases and examine the validity of the local density approximation (LDA), which is often invoked in the extraction of bulk properties from experimental measurements within trapped systems. We show how the validity of the LDA is affected by the trapping geometry, number of atoms and spin imbalance.

Cavity-induced switching between localized and extended states in a non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

We study an ultracold atom-cavity coupling system, which had been implemented in experiment to display weak light nonlinearity [S. Gupta \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{99}, 213601 (2007)]. The model is described by a non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate contained in a Fabry-Pérot optical resonator, in which two incommensurate standing-wave modes are excited and thus form a quasiperiodic optical lattice potential for the atoms. Special emphasis are paid to the variation of atomic wavefunction induced by the cavity light field. We show that bistability between the atomic localized and extended states can be generated under appropriate conditions.

Concomitant Modulated Superfluidity In Polarized Fermionic Gases

Recent groundbreaking experiments studying the effects of spin polarization on pairing in unitary Fermi gases encountered mutual qualitative and quantitative discrepancies which seem to be a function of the confining geometry. Using novel numerical algorithms we study the solution space for a 3-dimensional fully self-consistent formulation of realistic systems with up to $10^{5}$ atoms. A study of the three types of solutions obtained demonstrates a tendency towards metastability as the confining geometry is elongated. One of these solutions, which is consistent with Rice experiments at high trap aspect ratio, supports a state strikingly similar to the long sought Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state. Our study helps to resolve the long-standing controversy concerning the discrepancies between the findings from two different experimental groups and highlights the versatility of actual-size numerical calculations for investigating inhomogeneous fermionic superfluids.

Measurement back-action on the quantum spin-mixing dynamics of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider a small F=1 spinor condensate inside an optical cavity driven by an optical probe field, and subject the output of the probe to a homodyne detection, with the goal of investigating the effect of measurement back-action on the spin dynamics of the condensate. Using the stochastic master equation approach, we show that the effect of back-action is sensitive to not only the measurement strength but also the quantum fluctuation of the spinor condensate. The same method is also used to estimate the atom numbers below which the effect of back-action becomes so prominent that extracting spin dynamics from this cavity-based detection scheme is no longer practical.

Multi-stability in an optomechanical system with two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate a system consisting of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate interacting dispersively with a Fabry-Perot optical cavity where the two components of the condensate are resonantly coupled to each other by another classical field. The key feature of this system is that the atomic motional degrees of freedom and the internal pseudo-spin degrees of freedom are coupled to the cavity field simultaneously, hence an effective spin-orbital coupling within the condensate is induced by the cavity. The interplay among the atomic center- of-mass motion, the atomic collective spin and the cavity field leads to a strong nonlinearity, resulting in multi- stable behavior in both matter wave and light wave at the few-photon level.

Probing anisotropic superfluidity of rashbons in atomic Fermi gases

Motivated by the prospect of realizing a Fermi gas of $^{40}$K atoms with a synthetic non-Abelian gauge field, we investigate theoretically a strongly interacting Fermi gas in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbit coupling. As the two-fold spin degeneracy is lifted by spin-orbit interaction, bound pairs with mixed singlet and triplet pairings (referred to as rashbons) emerge, leading to an anisotropic superfluid. We show that this anisotropic superfluidity can be probed via measuring the momentum distribution and single-particle spectral function in a trapped atomic $^{40}$K cloud near a Feshbach resonance.

Rashba spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gases

We investigate theoretically BEC-BCS crossover physics in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a system of two-component Fermi gas with and without a Zeeman field that breaks the population balance between the two components. A new bound state (Rashba pair) emerges because of the spin-orbit interaction. We study the properties of Rashba pairs using a standard pair fluctuation theory. At zero temperature, the Rashba pairs condense into a macroscopic mixed spin state. We discuss in detail the experimental signatures for observing the condensation of Rashba pairs by calculating various physical observables which characterize the properties of the system and can be measured in experiment.

Single Impurity In Ultracold Fermi Superfluids

The role of impurities as experimental probes in the detection of quantum material properties is well appreciated. Here we study the effect of a single classical magnetic impurity in trapped ultracold Fermi superfluids. Depending on its shape and strength, a magnetic impurity can induce single or multiple mid-gap bound states in a superfluid Fermi gas. The multiple mid-gap states could coincide with the development of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase within the superfluid. As an analog of the Scanning Tunneling Microscope, we propose a modified RF spectroscopic method to measure the local density of states which can be employed to detect these states and other quantum phases of cold atoms. A key result of our self consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations is that a magnetic impurity can controllably induce an FFLO state at currently accessible experimental parameters.

Manifestations of the Roton Mode in Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the structure of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with long-range anisotropic dipolar interactions. We find that a small perturbation in the trapping potential can lead to dramatic changes in the condensate's density profile for sufficiently large dipolar interaction strengths and trap aspect ratios. By employing perturbation theory, we relate these oscillations to a previously-identified "roton-like" mode in dipolar BECs. The same physics is responsible for radial density oscillations in vortex states of dipolar BECs that have been predicted previously.

Spin dynamics and domain formation of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical cavity

We consider a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) dispersively coupled to a unidirectional ring cavity. We show that the ability of a cavity to modify, in a highly nonlinear fashion, matter-wave phase shifts adds a new dimension to the study of spinor condensates both within and beyond the single-mode approximation. In addition to demonstrating strong matter-wave bistability as in our earlier publication [L. Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 160403 (2009)], we show that the interplay between atomic and cavity fields can greatly enrich both the physics of critical slowing down in spin mixing dynamics and the physics of spin-domain formation in spinor condensates.

Cavity-Mediated Strong Matter Wave Bistability in a Spin-1 Condensate

We study matter wave bistability in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate dispersively coupled to a unidirectional ring cavity. A unique feature is that the population exchange among different modes of matter fields are accomplished via the spin-exchange collisions. We show that the interplay between the atomic spin mixing and the cavity light field can lead to a strong matter wave nonlinearity, making matter wave bistability in a cavity at the single-photon level achievable.

Detection of Fermi Pairing via Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

An optical spectroscopic method based on the principle of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) is proposed as quite a generic probing tool that provides valuable insights into the nature of Fermi paring in ultracold Fermi gases of two hyperfine states. This technique has the capability of allowing spectroscopic response to be determined in a nearly non-destructive manner and the whole spectrum may be obtained by scanning the probe laser frequency faster than the lifetime of the sample without re-preparing the atomic sample repeatedly. A quasiparticle picture is constructed to facilitate a simple physical explanation of the pairing signature in the EIT spectra.

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Theory of Dipolar Fermi Gases

We construct a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory that describes a spinless Fermi gas with long-range interaction. We apply this theory to a system of uniform dipolar fermionic polar molecules, which has attracted much attention recently, due to rapid experimental progress in achieving such systems. By calculating the anisotropic superfluid order parameter, and the critical temperature $T_{c}$, we show that, "hign $T_c$" superfluid can be achieved with a quite modest value of interaction strength for polar molecules. In addition, we also show that the presence of the Fock exchange interaction enhances superfluid pairing.

Matter-wave bistability in coupled atom-molecule quantum gases

We study the matter-wave bistability in coupled atom-molecule quantum gases, in which heteronuclear molecules are created via an interspecies Feshbach resonance involving either two-species Bose or two-species Fermi atoms at zero temperature. We show that the resonant two-channel Bose model is equivalent to the nondegenerate parametric down-conversion in quantum optics, while the corresponding Fermi model can be mapped to a quantum optics model that describes a single-mode laser field interacting with an ensemble of inhomogeneously broadened two-level atoms. Using these analogy and the fact that both models are subject to the Kerr nonlinearity due to the two-body s-wave collisions, we show that under proper conditions, the population in the molecular state in both models can be made to change with the Feshbach detuning in a bistable fashion.

Self-trapping of a Fermi super-fluid in a double-well potential in the BEC-unitarity crossover

We derive a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii density-functional equation appropriate to study the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dimers formed of singlet spin-half Fermi pairs in the BEC-unitarity crossover while the dimer-dimer scattering length $a$ changes from 0 to $\infty$. Using an effective one-dimensional form of this equation, we study the phenomenon of dynamical self-trapping of a cigar-shaped Fermi super-fluid in the entire BEC-unitarity crossover in a double-well potential. A simple two-mode model is constructed to provide analytical insights. We also discuss the consequence of our study on the self-trapping of an atomic BEC in a double-well potential.
