Homological $(n-2)$-systole in $n$-manifolds with positive triRic curvature

In this paper, we prove an optimal systolic inequality and characterize the case of equality on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive triRic curvature. This extends prior work of Bray-Brendle-Neves \cite{BrayBrenleNevesrigidity} and Chu-Lee-Zhu \cite{chuleezhu_n_systole} to higher codimensions. The proof relies on the notion of stable weighted $k$-slicing, a weighted volume comparison theorem and metric-deformation.

An MCMC Approach to Classical Estimation

This paper studies computationally and theoretically attractive estimators called the Laplace type estimators (LTE), which include means and quantiles of Quasi-posterior distributions defined as transformations of general (non-likelihood-based) statistical criterion functions, such as those in GMM, nonlinear IV, empirical likelihood, and minimum distance methods. The approach generates an alternative to classical extremum estimation and also falls outside the parametric Bayesian approach. For example, it offers a new attractive estimation method for such important semi-parametric problems as censored and instrumental quantile, nonlinear GMM and value-at-risk models. The LTE's are computed using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, which help circumvent the computational curse of dimensionality. A large sample theory is obtained for regular cases.

Bayesian Indirect Inference and the ABC of GMM

In this paper we propose and study local linear and polynomial based estimators for implementing Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) style indirect inference and GMM estimators. This method makes use of nonparametric regression in the computation of GMM and Indirect Inference models. We provide formal conditions under which frequentist inference is asymptotically valid and demonstrate the validity of the estimated posterior quantiles for confidence interval construction. We also show that in this setting, local linear kernel regression methods have theoretical advantages over local constant kernel methods that are also reflected in finite sample simulation results. Our results also apply to both exactly and over identified models. These estimators do not need to rely on numerical optimization or Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations. They provide an effective complement to the classical M-estimators and to MCMC methods, and can be applied to both likelihood based models and method of moment based models.

Higher dimensional surgery and Steklov eigenvalues

We show that for compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension at least $3$ with nonempty boundary, we can modify the manifold by performing surgeries of codimension $2$ or higher, while keeping the Steklov spectrum nearly unchanged. This shows that certain changes in the topology of a domain do not have an effect when considering shape optimization questions for Steklov eigenvalues in dimensions $3$ and higher. Our result generalizes the 1-dimensional surgery in [FS2] to higher dimensional surgeries and to higher eigenvalues. It is proved in [FS2] that the unit ball does not maximize the first nonzero normalized Steklov eigenvalue among contractible domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$, for $n \geq 3$. We show that this is also true for higher Steklov eigenvalues. Using similar ideas we show that in $\mathbb{R}^n$, for $n\geq 3$, the $j$-th normalized Steklov eigenvalue is not maximized in the limit by a sequence of contractible domains degenerating to the disjoint union of $j$ unit balls, in contrast to the case in dimension $2$ [GP1].

The Orlicz-Petty bodies

This paper is dedicated to the Orlicz-Petty bodies. We first propose the homogeneous Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas, and establish their basic properties such as homogeneity, affine invariance and affine isoperimetric inequalities. We also prove that the homogeneous geominimal surface areas are continuous, under certain conditions, on the set of convex bodies in terms of the Hausdorff distance. Our proofs rely on the existence of the Orlicz-Petty bodies and the uniform boundedness of the Orlicz-Petty bodies of a convergent sequence of convex bodies. Similar results for the nonhomogeneous Orlicz geominimal surface areas are proved as well.
