Continuous Data Assimilation for Displacement in a Porous Medium

In this paper we propose the use of a continuous data assimilation algorithm for miscible flow models in a porous medium. In the absence of initial conditions for the model, observed sparse measurements are used to generate an approximation to the true solution. Under certain assumption of the sparse measurements and their incorporation into the algorithm it can be shown that the resulting approximate solution converges to the true solution at an exponential rate as time progresses. Various numerical examples are considered in order to validate the suitability of the algorithm.

Invariant measures for stochastic damped 2D Euler equations

We study the two-dimensional Euler equations, damped by a linear term and driven by an additive noise. The existence of weak solutions has already been studied; pathwise uniqueness is known for solutions that have vorticity in $L^\infty$. In this paper, we prove the Markov property and then the existence of an invariant measure in the space $L^\infty$ by means of a Krylov-Bogoliubov's type method, working with the weak$\star$ and the bounded weak$\star$ topologies in $L^\infty$.

Space-time Euler discretization schemes for the stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations

We prove that the implicit time Euler scheme coupled with finite elements space discretization for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations on the torus subject to a random perturbation converges in $L^2(Ω)$, and describe the rate of convergence for an $H^1$-valued initial condition. This refines previous results which only established the convergence in probability of these numerical approximations. Using exponential moment estimates of the solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations and convergence of a localized scheme, we can prove strong convergence of this space-time approximation. The speed of the $L^2(Ω)$-convergence depends on the diffusion coefficient and on the viscosity parameter. In case of Scott-Vogelius mixed elements and for an additive noise, the convergence is polynomial.

Stochastic homogenization of multicontinuum heterogeneous flows

We consider a multicontinuum model in porous media applications, which is described as a system of coupled flow equations. The coupling between different continua depends on many factors and its modeling is important for porous media applications. The coefficients depend on particle deposition that is described in term of a stochastic process solution of an SDE. The stochastic process is considered to be faster than the flow motion and we introduce time-space scales to model the problem. Our goal is to pass to the limit in time and space and to find an associated averaged system. This is an averaging-homogenization problem, where the averages are computed in terms of the invariant measure associated to the fast motion and the spatial variable. We use the techniques developed in our previous paper to model the interactions between the continua and derive the averaged model problem that can be used in many applications.

Ergodicity of stochastic shell models driven by pure jump noise

In the present paper we study a stochastic evolution equation for shell (SABRA \& GOY) models with pure jump \levy noise $L=\sum_{k=1}^\infty l_k(t)e_k$ on a Hilbert space $\h$. Here $\{l_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is a family of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) real-valued pure jump \levy processes and $\{e_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$ is an orthonormal basis of $\h$. We mainly prove that the stochastic system has a unique invariant measure. For this aim we show that if the \levy measure of each component $l_k(t)$ of $L$ satisfies a certain order and a non-{degeneracy} condition and is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure, then the Markov semigroup associated {with} the unique solution of the system has the strong Feller property. If, furthermore, each $l_k(t)$ satisfies a small deviation property, then 0 is accessible for the dynamics independently of the initial condition. Examples of noises satisfying our conditions are a family of i.i.d tempered \levy noises $\{l_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$ and $\{l_k=W_k\circ G_k + G_k, k\in \mathbb{N} \}$ where $\{G_k, k \in \mathbb{N}\}$ (resp., $\{W_k, k\in \mathbb{N}\}$) is a sequence of i.i.d subordinator Gamma (resp., real-valued Wiener) processes with \levy density $f_G(z)=(\vartheta z)^{-1} e^{-\frac z\vartheta} \mathds{1}_{z>0}$. The proof of the strong Feller property relies on the truncation of the nonlinearity and the use of a gradient estimate for the Galerkin system of the truncated equation. The gradient estimate is a consequence of a Bismut-Elworthy-Li (BEL) type formula that we prove in the Appendix A of the paper.

Existence and uniqueness of global solutions for the modified anisotropic 3D Navier-Stokes equations

We study a modified three-dimensional incompressible anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations. The modification consists in the addition of a power term to the nonlinear convective one. This modification appears naturally in porous media when a fluid obeys the Darcy-Forchheimer law instead of the classical Darcy law. We prove global in time existence and uniqueness of solutions without assuming the smallness condition on the initial data. This improves the result obtained for the classical 3D incompressible anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations.

Statistical properties of stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations from linear models

A new approach to the old-standing problem of the anomaly of the scaling exponents of nonlinear models of turbulence has been proposed and tested through numerical simulations. This is achieved by constructing, for any given nonlinear model, a linear model of passive advection of an auxiliary field whose anomalous scaling exponents are the same as the scaling exponents of the nonlinear problem. In this paper, we investigate this conjecture for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations driven by an additive noise. In order to check this conjecture, we analyze the coupled system Navier-Stokes/linear advection system in the unknowns $(u,w)$. We introduce a parameter $λ$ which gives a system $(u^λ,w^λ)$; this system is studied for any $λ$ proving its well posedness and the uniqueness of its invariant measure $μ^λ$. The key point is that for any $λ\neq 0$ the fields $u^λ$ and $w^λ$ have the same scaling exponents, by assuming universality of the scaling exponents to the force. In order to prove the same for the original fields $u$ and $w$, we investigate the limit as $λ\to 0$, proving that $μ^λ$ weakly converges to $μ^0$, where $μ^0$ is the only invariant measure for the joint system for $(u,w)$ when $λ=0$.

Stochastic lattice dynamical systems with fractional noise

This article is devoted to study stochastic lattice dynamical systems driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(1/2,1)$. First of all, we investigate the existence and uniqueness of pathwise mild solutions to such systems by the Young integration setting and prove that the solution generates a random dynamical system. Further, we analyze the exponential stability of the trivial solution.

The regularized 3D Boussinesq equations with fractional Laplacian and no diffusion

In this paper, we study the 3D regularized Boussinesq equations. The velocity equation is regularized à la Leray through a smoothing kernel of order $α$ in the nonlinear term and a $β$-fractional Laplacian; we consider the critical case $α+β=\frac{5}{4}$ and we assume $\frac 12 <β<\frac 54$. The temperature equation is a pure transport equation, where the transport velocity is regularized through the same smoothing kernel of order $α$. We prove global well posedness when the initial velocity is in $H^r$ and the initial temperature is in $H^{r-β}$ for $r>\max(2β,β+1)$. This regularity is enough to prove uniqueness of solutions. We also prove a continuous dependence of the solutions on the initial conditions.

Homogenization of Brinkman flows in heterogeneous dynamic media

In this paper, we study Brinkman's equations with microscale properties that are highly heterogeneous in space and time. The time variations are controlled by a stochastic particle dynamics described by an SDE. The particle dynamics can be thought as particle deposition that often occurs in filter problems. Our main results include the derivation of macroscale equations and showing that the macroscale equations are deterministic. The latter is important for our (also many other) applications as it greatly simplifies the macroscale equations. We use the asymptotic properties of the SDE and the periodicity of the Brinkman's coefficient in the space variable to prove the convergence result. The SDE has a unique invariant measure that is ergodic and strongly mixing. The macro scale equations are derived through an averaging principle of the slow motion (fluid velocity) with respect to the fast motion (particle dynamics) and also by averaging the Brinkman's coefficient with respect to the space variable. Our results can be extended to more general nonlinear diffusion equations with heterogeneous coefficients.

Continuous Data Assimilation with Stochastically Noisy Data

We analyze the performance of a data-assimilation algorithm based on a linear feedback control when used with observational data that contains measurement errors. Our model problem consists of dynamics governed by the two-dimension incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, observational measurements given by finite volume elements or nodal points of the velocity field and measurement errors which are represented by stochastic noise. Under these assumptions, the data-assimilation algorithm consists of a system of stochastically forced Navier-Stokes equations. The main result of this paper provides explicit conditions on the observation density (resolution) which guarantee explicit asymptotic bounds, as the time tends to infinity, on the error between the approximate solution and the actual solutions which is corresponding to these measurements, in terms of the variance of the noise in the measurements. Specifically, such bounds are given for the the limit supremum, as the time tends to infinity, of the expected value of the $L^2$-norm and of the $H^1$ Sobolev norm of the difference between the approximating solution and the actual solution. Moreover, results on the average time error in mean are stated.

Homogenization of the evolution Stokes equation in a perforated domain with a stochastic Fourier boundary condition

The evolution Stokes equation in a perforated domain subject to Fourier boundary condition on the boundaries of the holes is considered. We assume that the dynamic is driven by a stochastic perturbation on the interior of the domain and another stochastic perturbation on the boundaries of the holes. The macroscopic (homogenized) equation is derived as another stochastic partial differential equation, defined in the whole non perforated domain. Here, the initial stochastic perturbation on the boundary becomes part of the homogenized equation as another stochastic force. We use the two-scale convergence method after extending the solution with 0 in the wholes to pass to the limit. By Itô stochastic calculus, we get uniform estimates on the solution in appropriate spaces. In order to pass to the limit on the boundary integrals, we rewrite them in terms of integrals in the whole domain. In particular, for the stochastic integral on the boundary, we combine the previous idea of rewriting it on the whole domain with the assumption that the Brownian motion is of trace class. Due to the particular boundary condition dealt with, we get that the solution of the stochastic homogenized equation is not divergence free. However, it is coupled with the cell problem that has a divergence free solution. This paper represents an extension of the results from of Duan and Wang (Comm. Math. Phys. 275:1508--1527, 2007), where a reaction diffusion equation with a dynamical boundary condition with a noise source term on both the interior of the domain and on the boundary was studied, and through a tightness argument and a pointwise two scale convergence method the homogenized equation was derived.

Homogenization of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation with a stochastic slip boundary condition

The two dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in a perforated domain with a dynamical slip boundary condition is considered. We assume that the dynamic is driven by a stochastic perturbation on the interior of the domain and another stochastic perturbation on the boundaries of the holes. We consider a scaling ($\e^2$ for the viscosity and 1 for the density) that will lead to a time dependent limit problem. However, the noncritical scaling ($\e^β,\quad β>1$) is considered in front of the nonlinear term. The homogenized system in the limit is obtained as a Darcy's law with memory with two permeabilities and an extra term that is due to the stochastic perturbation on the boundary of the holes. We use the two-scale convergence method. Due to the stochastic integral, the pressure that appears in the variational formulation does not have enough regularity in time. This fact made us rely only on the variational formulation for the passage to the limit on the solution. We obtain a variational formulation for the limit that is solution of a Stokes system with two pressures. This two-scale limit gives rise to three cell problems, two of them give the permeabilities while the third one gives an extra term in the Darcy's law due to the stochastic perturbation on the boundary of the holes.

On the rate of convergence of the 2-D stochastic Leray-$α$ model to the 2-D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with multiplicative noise

In the present paper we study the convergence of the solution of the two dimensional (2-D) stochastic Leray-$α$ model to the solution of the 2-D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. We are mainly interested in the rate of convergence, as $α$ tends to 0, of the error function which is the difference between the two solutions in an appropriate topology. We show that when properly localized the error function converges in mean square as $α\to 0$ and the convergence is of order $O(α)$. We also prove that the error converges in probability to zero with order at most $O(α)$.

Stochastic Shell Models driven by a multiplicative fractional Brownian--motion

We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of a stochastic shell--model. The equation is driven by an infinite dimensional fractional Brownian--motion with Hurst--parameter $H\in (1/2,1)$, and contains a non--trivial coefficient in front of the noise which satisfies special regularity conditions. The appearing stochastic integrals are defined in a fractional sense. First, we prove the existence and uniqueness of variational solutions to approximating equations driven by piecewise linear continuous noise, for which we are able to derive important uniform estimates in some functional spaces. Then, thanks to a compactness argument and these estimates, we prove that these variational solutions converge to a limit solution, which turns out to be the unique pathwise mild solution associated to the shell--model with fractional noise as driving process.

Strong solutions to stochastic hydrodynamical systems with multiplicative noise of jump type

In this paper we prove the existence and uniqueness of maximal strong (in PDE sense) solution to several stochastic hydrodynamical systems on unbounded and bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n=2,3$. This maximal solution turns out to be a global one in the case of 2D stochastic hydrodynamical systems. Our framework is general in the sense that it allows us to solve the Navier-Stokes equations, MHD equations, Magnetic Bénard problems, Boussinesq model of the Bénard convection, Shell models of turbulence and the Leray-$α$ model with jump type perturbation. Our goal is achieved by proving general results about the existence of maximal and global solution to an abstract stochastic partial differential equations with locally Lipschitz continuous coefficients. The method of the proofs are based on some truncation and fixed point methods.

Pathwise solutions and attractors for retarded SPDEs with time smooth diffusion coefficients

In this paper we study the longtime dynamics of mild solutions to retarded stochastic evolution systems driven by a Hilbert-valued Brownian motion. As a preparation for this purpose we have to show the existence and uniqueness of a cocycle solution of such an equation. We do not assume that the noise is given in additive form or that it is a very simple multiplicative noise. However, we need some smoothing property for the coefficient in front of the noise. The main idea of this paper consists of expressing the stochastic integral in terms of non-stochastic integrals and the noisy path by using an integration by parts. This latter term causes that in a first moment only a local mild solution can be obtained, since in order to apply the Banach fixed point theorem it is crucial to have the Hölder norm of the noisy path to be sufficiently small. Later, by using appropriate stopping times, we shall derive the existence and uniqueness of a global mild solution. Furthermore, the asymptotic behavior is investigated by using the {\it Random Dynamical Systems theory}. In particular, we shall show that the global mild solution generates a random dynamical system that, under an appropriate smallness condition for the time lag, have associated a random attractor.

Inviscid Large deviation principle and the 2D Navier Stokes equations with a free boundary condition

Using a weak convergence approach, we prove a LPD for the solution of 2D stochastic Navier Stokes equations when the viscosity converges to 0 and the noise intensity is multiplied by the square root of the viscosity. Unlike previous results on LDP for hydrodynamical models, the weak convergence is proven by tightness properties of the distribution of the solution in appropriate functional spaces.

On a Stochastic Leray-α model of Euler equations

We deal with the 3D inviscid Leray-α model. The well posedness for this problem is not known; by adding a random perturbation we prove that there exists a unique (in law) global solution. The random forcing term formally preserves conservation of energy. The result holds for initial velocity of finite energy and the solution has finite energy a.s.. These results are easily extended to the 2D case.

2D hydrodynamical systems: invariant measures of Gaussian type

Gaussian measures $μ^{β,ν}$ are associated to some stochastic 2D hydrodynamical systems. They are of Gibbsian type and are constructed by means of some invariant quantities of the system depending on some parameter $β$ (related to the 2D nature of the fluid) and the viscosity $ν$. We prove the existence and the uniqueness of the global flow for the stochastic viscous system; moreover the measure $μ^{β,ν}$ is invariant for this flow and is unique. Finally, we prove that the deterministic inviscid equation has a $μ^{β,ν}$-stationary solution (for any $ν>0$).

Invariant Gibbs measures of the energy for shell models of turbulence; the inviscid and viscous cases

Gaussian measures of Gibbsian type are associated with some shell models of 3D turbulence; they are constructed by means of the energy, a conserved quantity for the 3D inviscid and unforced shell model. We prove the existence of a unique global flow for a stochastic viscous shell model and a global flow for the deterministic inviscid shell model, with the property that these Gibbs measures are invariant for these flows.

Stochastic attractors for shell phenomenological models of turbulence

Recently, it has been proposed that the Navier-Stokes equations and a relevant linear advection model have the same long-time statistical properties, in particular, they have the same scaling exponents of their structure functions. This assertion has been investigate rigorously in the context of certain nonlinear deterministic phenomenological shell model, the Sabra shell model, of turbulence and its corresponding linear advection counterpart model. This relationship has been established through a "homotopy-like" coefficient $λ$ which bridges continuously between the two systems. That is, for $λ=1$ one obtains the full nonlinear model, and the corresponding linear advection model is achieved for $λ=0$. In this paper, we investigate the validity of this assertion for certain stochastic phenomenological shell models of turbulence driven by an additive noise. We prove the continuous dependence of the solutions with respect to the parameter $λ$. Moreover, we show the existence of a finite-dimensional random attractor for each value of $λ$ and establish the upper semicontinuity property of this random attractors, with respect to the parameter $λ$. This property is proved by a pathwise argument. Our study aims toward the development of basic results and techniques that may contribute to the understanding of the relation between the long-time statistical properties of the nonlinear and linear models.
