Multiplexed entanglement swapping with atomic-ensemble-based quantum memories in the single excitation regime

Entanglement swapping (ES) between memory repeater links is critical for establishing quantum networks via quantum repeaters. So far, ES with atomic-ensemble-based memories has not been achieved. Here, we experimentally demonstrated ES between two entangled pairs of spin-wave memories via Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller scheme. With a cloud of cold atoms inserted in a cavity, we produce non-classically-correlated spin-wave-photon pairs in 12 spatial modes and then prepare two entangled pairs of spin-wave memories via a multiplexed scheme. Via single-photon Bell measurement on retrieved fields from two memories, we project the two remaining memories never entangled previously into an entangled state with the measured concurrence of C = 0.0124(0.003). The successful probability of ES in our scheme is increased by three times, compared with that in non-multiplexed scheme. Our presented work shows that the generation of entanglement (C>0) between the remaining memory ensembles requires the average cross-correlation function of the spin-wave-photon pairs to be >30 .

Fundamental Limits on Detection With a Dual-function Radar Communication System

This paper investigates the fundamental limits on the target detection performance with a dual-function multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar communication (RadCom) systems. By assuming the presence of a point-like target and a communication receiver, closed-form expressions for the maximum detection probability and the transmit waveforms achieving the optimal performance are derived. Results show that for the considered case, the dual-function system should transmit coherent waveforms to achieve the optimal detection performance. Moreover, the angle separation between the target and communication receiver has a great impact on the achievable detection performance.

NTIRE 2021 Challenge on Quality Enhancement of Compressed Video: Methods and Results

This paper reviews the first NTIRE challenge on quality enhancement of compressed video, with a focus on the proposed methods and results. In this challenge, the new Large-scale Diverse Video (LDV) dataset is employed. The challenge has three tracks. Tracks 1 and 2 aim at enhancing the videos compressed by HEVC at a fixed QP, while Track 3 is designed for enhancing the videos compressed by x265 at a fixed bit-rate. Besides, the quality enhancement of Tracks 1 and 3 targets at improving the fidelity (PSNR), and Track 2 targets at enhancing the perceptual quality. The three tracks totally attract 482 registrations. In the test phase, 12 teams, 8 teams and 11 teams submitted the final results of Tracks 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The proposed methods and solutions gauge the state-of-the-art of video quality enhancement. The homepage of the challenge: https://github.com/RenYang-home/NTIRE21_VEnh

Strolling in Room-Scale VR: Hex-Core-MK1 Omnidirectional Treadmill

The natural locomotion interface is critical to the development of many VR applications. For household VR applications, there are two basic requirements: natural immersive experience and minimized space occupation. The existing locomotion strategies generally do not simultaneously satisfy these two requirements well. This paper presents a novel omnidirectional treadmill (ODT) system, named Hex-Core-MK1 (HCMK1). By implementing two kinds of mirror symmetrical spiral rollers to generate the omnidirectional velocity field, this proposed system is capable of providing real walking experiences with a full-degree of freedom in an area as small as 1.76 m^2, while delivering great advantages over several existing ODT systems in terms of weight, volume, latency and dynamic performance. Compared with the sizes of Infinadeck and HCP, the two best motor-driven ODTs so far, the 8 cm height of HCMK1 is only 20% of Infinadeck and 50% of HCP. In addition, HCMK1 is a lightweight device weighing only 110 kg, which provides possibilities of further expanding VR scenarios, such as terrain simulation. The latency of HCMK1 is only 23ms. The experiments show that HCMK1 can deliver on a starting acceleration of 16.00 m/s^2 and a braking acceleration of 30.00 m/s^2.

Air-Ground Collaborative Mobile Edge Computing: Architecture, Challenges, and Opportunities

By pushing computation, cache, and network control to the edge, mobile edge computing (MEC) is expected to play a leading role in fifth generation (5G) and future sixth generation (6G). Nevertheless, facing ubiquitous fast-growing computational demands, it is impossible for a single MEC paradigm to effectively support high-quality intelligent services at end user equipments (UEs). To address this issue, we propose an air-ground collaborative MEC (AGC-MEC) architecture in this article. The proposed AGC-MEC integrates all potentially available MEC servers within air and ground in the envisioned 6G, by a variety of collaborative ways to provide computation services at their best for UEs. Firstly, we introduce the AGC-MEC architecture and elaborate three typical use cases. Then, we discuss four main challenges in the AGC-MEC as well as their potential solutions. Next, we conduct a case study of collaborative service placement for AGC-MEC to validate the effectiveness of the proposed collaborative service placement strategy. Finally, we highlight several potential research directions of the AGC-MEC.

Generation of entanglement between a highly wave-packet-tunable photon and a spin-wave memory in cold atoms

Controls of waveforms (pulse durations) of single photons are important tasks for effectively interconnecting disparate atomic memories in hybrid quantum networks. So far, the waveform control of single photon that is entangled with an atomic memory remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrated control of waveform length of the photon that is entangled with an atomic spin-wave memory by varying light-atom interaction time in cold atoms. The Bell parameter S as a function of the duration of photon pulse is measured, which shows that violations of Bell equality can be achieved for the photon pulse in the duration range from 40 ns to 50 us, where, S=2.64+/-0.02 and S=2.26+/-0.05 for the 40-ns and 50-μs durations, respectively. The measured results show that S parameter decreases with the increase in the pulse duration. We confirm that the increase in photon noise probability per pulse with the pulse-duration is responsible for the S decrease.

Noise suppression in a temporal-multimode quantum memory entangled with a photon via asymmetrical photon-collection channel

Quantum interfaces (QIs) that generate entanglement between a multimode atomic memory and a photon forms a multiplexed repeater node and hold promise to greatly improve quantum repeater rates. Recently, the temporal multimode spin-wave memory that is entangled with a photon has been demonstrated with cold atoms. However, due to additional noise generated in multimode operation, the fidelity of spin-wave-photon entanglement significantly decreases with the mode number. So far, the improvement on temporal-multimode entanglement fidelity via suppressing the additional noise remains unexplored. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme that can suppress the additional noise of a temporally-multiplexed QI. The scheme uses an asymmetric channel to collect the photons coming and retrieving from the temporally-multiplexed QI. For making comparisons, we also set up a QI that uses symmetric channel for the photon collections. When the QIs store 14 modes, the measured Bell parameter S for the QIs using the asymmetric and the symmetric photon-collection channels are 2.36+/-0.03 and 2.24+/-0.04, respectively, showing that the QI using the asymmetric channel gives rise to a 3% increase in entanglement fidelity, i.e., a 1.7-fold decrease in the additional noise, compared with the QI using the symmetric one. On the other hand, the 14-mode entanglement QIs that use the asymmetric and symmetric collections preserve the violation of a Bell inequality for storage times up to 25 us and 20 us, respectively, showing that the asymmetric QI has a higher entanglement storage performance.

Competitive ride-sourcing market with a third-party integrator

Recently, some transportation service providers attempt to integrate the ride services offered by multiple independent ride-sourcing platforms, and passengers are able to request ride through such third-party integrators or connectors and receive service from any one of the platforms. This novel business model, termed as third-party platform-integration in this paper, has potentials to alleviate the cost of market fragmentation due to the demand splitting among multiple platforms. While most existing studies focus on the operation strategies for one single monopolist platform, much less is known about the competition and platform-integration as well as the implications on operation strategy and system efficiency. In this paper, we propose mathematical models to describe the ride-sourcing market with multiple competing platforms and compare system performance metrics between two market scenarios, i.e., with and without platform-integration, at Nash equilibrium as well as social optimum. We find that platform-integration can increase total realized demand and social welfare at both Nash equilibrium and social optimum, but may not necessarily generate a greater profit when vehicle supply is sufficiently large or/and market is too fragmented. We show that the market with platform-integration generally achieves greater social welfare. On one hand, the integrator in platform-integration is able to generate a thicker market and reduce matching frictions; on the other hand, multiple platforms are still competing by independently setting their prices, which help to mitigate monopoly mark-up as in the monopoly market.

Knowledge Efficient Deep Learning for Natural Language Processing

Deep learning has become the workhorse for a wide range of natural language processing applications. But much of the success of deep learning relies on annotated examples. Annotation is time-consuming and expensive to produce at scale. Here we are interested in methods for reducing the required quantity of annotated data -- by making the learning methods more knowledge efficient so as to make them more applicable in low annotation (low resource) settings. There are various classical approaches to making the models more knowledge efficient such as multi-task learning, transfer learning, weakly supervised and unsupervised learning etc. This thesis focuses on adapting such classical methods to modern deep learning models and algorithms. This thesis describes four works aimed at making machine learning models more knowledge efficient. First, we propose a knowledge rich deep learning model (KRDL) as a unifying learning framework for incorporating prior knowledge into deep models. In particular, we apply KRDL built on Markov logic networks to denoise weak supervision. Second, we apply a KRDL model to assist the machine reading models to find the correct evidence sentences that can support their decision. Third, we investigate the knowledge transfer techniques in multilingual setting, where we proposed a method that can improve pre-trained multilingual BERT based on the bilingual dictionary. Fourth, we present an episodic memory network for language modelling, in which we encode the large external knowledge for the pre-trained GPT.

Long-lived and multiplexed atom-photon entanglement interface with feed-forward-controlled readouts

The quantum interface (QI) that generates entanglement between photonic and spin-wave (atomic memory) qubits is a basic building block for quantum repeaters. Realizing ensemble-based repeaters in practice requires quantum memory providing long lifetime and multimode capacity. Significant progresses have been achieved on these separate goals. The remaining challenge is to combine long-lived and multimode memories into a single QI. Here, by establishing multimode, magnetic-field-insensitive and long-wavelength spin-wave storage in laser-cooled atoms that are placed inside a phase-passively-stabilized polarization interferometer, we constructed a multiplexed QI that stores up to three long-lived spin-wave qubits. Using a feed-forward-controlled system, we demonstrated that the multiplexed QI gives rise to a 3-fold increase in the atom-photon (photon-photon) entanglement-generation probability compared to single-mode QIs. The measured Bell parameter is 2.5+/-0.1 combined with a memory lifetime up to 1ms. The presented work represents a key step forward in realizing fiber-based long-distance quantum communications.

Magnon-magnon interaction and magnon relaxation time in ferromagnetic Cr2Ge2Te6 monolayer

Despite the intense amount of attention and huge potential of two-dimensional (2D) magnets for applications in novel magnetic, magneto-optical, magneto-thermal and magneto-electronic devices, there has yet to be a robust strategy developed to systematically understand magnon-magnon (MMI) interactions at finite temperature. In this paper, we present a first-principles theoretical method to introduce the finite temperature magnon-magnon interaction into Heisenberg Hamiltonian through a nonlinear correction energy. The Wick theorem is used to decouple the four-magnon operators to two-magnon order. We demonstrate the capabilities of this method by studying the strength of MMI in Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) monolayer. The spin wave spectrum at finite temperature and the time-dependent spin autocorrelation function are explored. It is found that the magnon relaxation time due to magnon-magnon scattering increases with temperature because of the reduction in magnon energy, while decreases with wavevector and external magnetic field. Our results provide a new insight to understand the magnon damping and energy dissipation in two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials.

MixPUL: Consistency-based Augmentation for Positive and Unlabeled Learning

Learning from positive and unlabeled data (PU learning) is prevalent in practical applications where only a couple of examples are positively labeled. Previous PU learning studies typically rely on existing samples such that the data distribution is not extensively explored. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective data augmentation method, coined~\algo, based on \emph{consistency regularization} which provides a new perspective of using PU data. In particular, the proposed~\algo~incorporates supervised and unsupervised consistency training to generate augmented data. To facilitate supervised consistency, reliable negative examples are mined from unlabeled data due to the absence of negative samples. Unsupervised consistency is further encouraged between unlabeled datapoints. In addition,~\algo~reduces margin loss between positive and unlabeled pairs, which explicitly optimizes AUC and yields faster convergence. Finally, we conduct a series of studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of consistency regularization. We examined three kinds of reliable negative mining methods. We show that~\algo~achieves an averaged improvement of classification error from 16.49 to 13.09 on the CIFAR-10 dataset across different positive data amount.

Controllably releasing long-lived quantum memory for photonic polarization qubit into multiple separate photonic channels

We report an experiment in which long-lived quantum memories for photonic polarization qubits (PPQs) are controllably released into any one of multiple separate channels. The PPQs are implemented with an arbitrarily-polarized coherent signal light pulses at the single-photon level and are stored in cold atoms by means of electromagnetic-induced-transparency scheme. Reading laser pulses propagating along the direction at a small angle relative to quantum axis are applied to release the stored PPQs into an output channel. By changing the propagating directions of the read laser beam, we controllably release the retrieved PPQs into 7 different photonic output channels, respectively. At one of the output channels, the measured maximum quantum-process fidelity for the PPQs is 94.2% at storage time of t= 0.85ms. At storage time of 6 ms, the quantum-process fidelity is still beyond 78%, the threshold for the violation of the Bell inequality. The demonstrated controllable release of the stored PPQs may extend the capabilities of the quantum information storage technique.

Generation of narrow-band polarization-entangled photon pairs at a rubidium D1 line

Using the process of cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), we generate a narrow-band polarization-entangled photon pair resonant on the rubidium (Rb) D1 line (795 nm). The degenerate single-mode photon pair is selected by multiple temperature controlled etalons. The linewidth of generated polarization-entangled photon pairs is 15 MHz which matches the typical atomic memory bandwidth. The measured Bell parameter for the polarization-entangled photons S=2.73+-0.04 which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality by ~18 standard deviations. The presented entangled photon pair source could be utilized in quantum communication and quantum computing based on quantum memories in atomic ensemble.

Reducing Runtime by Recycling Samples

Contrary to the situation with stochastic gradient descent, we argue that when using stochastic methods with variance reduction, such as SDCA, SAG or SVRG, as well as their variants, it could be beneficial to reuse previously used samples instead of fresh samples, even when fresh samples are available. We demonstrate this empirically for SDCA, SAG and SVRG, studying the optimal sample size one should use, and also uncover be-havior that suggests running SDCA for an integer number of epochs could be wasteful.

Who did What: A Large-Scale Person-Centered Cloze Dataset

We have constructed a new "Who-did-What" dataset of over 200,000 fill-in-the-gap (cloze) multiple choice reading comprehension problems constructed from the LDC English Gigaword newswire corpus. The WDW dataset has a variety of novel features. First, in contrast with the CNN and Daily Mail datasets (Hermann et al., 2015) we avoid using article summaries for question formation. Instead, each problem is formed from two independent articles --- an article given as the passage to be read and a separate article on the same events used to form the question. Second, we avoid anonymization --- each choice is a person named entity. Third, the problems have been filtered to remove a fraction that are easily solved by simple baselines, while remaining 84% solvable by humans. We report performance benchmarks of standard systems and propose the WDW dataset as a challenge task for the community.

Simultaneous generation of two spin-wave-photon entangled states in an atomic ensemble

The generation and storage of entangled photons play important roles in quantum information technique. Spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) in atomic ensembles provides a promising method to generate entangled photons capable of storage. In the past experiments, a spin-wave-photon entangled state is produced via SRS in an atomic ensemble, with which a pair of entangled photons is obtained. Here, we report a scheme of simultaneously generating two spin-wave-photon entangled states in an atomic ensemble by collecting Stokes photons at two different directions. Based on the obtained two atom-photon entangled sources, we generate a three-photon GHZ polarization-entangled state and conditionally prepare a polarization-entangled photon pair, respectively.

Furthermore, the origin of GBF is discussed in detail.

Prometheus: LT Codes Meet Cooperative Transmission in Cellular Networks

Following fast growth of cellular networks, more users have drawn attention to the contradiction between dynamic user data traffic and static data plans. To address this important but largely unexplored issue, in this paper, we design a new data plan sharing system named Prometheus, which is based on the scenario that some smartphone users have surplus data traffic and are willing to help others download data. To realize this system, we first propose a mechanism that incorporates LT codes into UDP. It is robust to transmission errors and encourages more concurrent transmissions and forwardings. It also can be implemented easily with low implementation complexity. Then we design an incentive mechanism using a Stackelberg game to choose assistant users ($AUs$), all participants will gain credits in return, which can be used to ask for future help when they need to download something. Finally real environment experiments are conducted and the results show that users in our Prometheus not only can manage their surplus data plan more efficiently, but also achieve a higher speed download rate.

Birefringent crystals (BFC) have been extensively used in imaging spectrometer, laser devices, and optical components. Seeking new BFC is of important for both fundamental research and industrial application. Employed first-principles density functional theory (DFT), we found that LaOBiS2 (space group P4/nmm), the parent phase of recently discovered BiS2-superconductor, exhibits superior birefringence with a maximum value of 2.94, which is 13.4 times larger than the extensively used YVO4 (0.22). Furthermore, LaOBiS2 is an indirect semiconductor with a band-gap of 0.9 eV, which is suitable for optical applications. The origin of giant inherent birefringence is discussed.

Long lifetime and high-fidelity quantum memory of photonic polarization qubit by lifting Zeeman degeneracy

Long-lived and high-fidelity memory for photonic polarization qubit (PPQ) is crucial for constructing quantum networks. Here we present an EIT-based millisecond storage system in which a moderate magnetic field is applied on a cold-atom cloud to lift Zeeman degeneracy. PPQ states are stored as two magnetic-field-insensitive spin waves. Especially, the influence of magnetic-field-sensitive spin waves on the storage performances is almost totally avoided. The measured average fidelities of polarization states are 98.6% at 200 us and 78.4% at 4.5 ms, respectively.

Experimental realization of three-color entanglement at optical fiber communication and atomic storage wavelengths

Multi-color entangled states of light including low-loss optical fiber transmission and atomic resonance frequencies are essential resources for future quantum information network. We present the experimental achievement on the three-color entanglement generation at 852 nm, 1550 nm and 1440 nm wavelengths for optical continuous variables. The entanglement generation system consists of two cascaded non-degenerated optical parametric oscillators (NOPOs). The flexible selectivity of nonlinear crystals in the two NOPOs and the tunable property of NOPO provide large freedom for the frequency selection of three entangled optical beams, so the present system is possible to be developed as practical devices used for quantum information networks with atomic storage units and long fiber transmission lines.

Striped-magnetic-order suppresses giant optical anisotropy and drives structural distortion in iron arsenide superconductors

To examine the role of magnetism in superconductivity of iron-based superconductors, we first present first-principles optical calculations on three representative parent compounds: LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2 and LiFeAs. Both nonmagnetic (NM) and spin-density wave (SDW) with striped antiferromagnetic order are considered. Due to their layer structure, these compounds in NM states show anomalously large optical anisotropy with a conductivity ratio $σ_{zz}/σ{xx}$ as large as 313% in LaFeAsO and 530% in LiFeAs. Interestingly the giant optical anisotropy is significantly suppressed by SDW. On the other hand, the variable-cell-shape optimizations confirm that SDW does drive an orthorhombic-distortion. The drive force is dependent on the local magnetic moment on Fe sublattice, which is tuned by its bonding environment. Based on these results, we discussed the delicate role of magnetism in superconductivity.

Coherent manipulation of spin wave vector for polarization of photons in an atomic ensemble

We experimentally demonstrate the manipulation of two-orthogonal components of a spin wave in an atomic ensemble. Based on Raman two-photon transition and Larmor spin precession induced by magnetic field pulses, the coherent rotations between the two components of the spin wave is controllably achieved. Successively, the two manipulated spin-wave components are mapped into two orthogonal polarized optical emissions, respectively. By measuring Ramsey fringes of the retrieved optical signals, the π/2-pulse fidelity of ~96% is obtained. The presented manipulation scheme can be used to build an arbitrary rotation for qubit operations in quantum information processing based on atomic ensembles.

Thus, the amplitude and the angular distribution of scattering current in the scatter process can be detected directly in real time with the QUIC-AB. The phase shift of scattered waves and the details of the scattering potential can also be determined.

Zero-refraction in natural materials and the mechanism of metal superlens

We found that a single negative material has a character of zero-refraction in near field, and point out that the mechanism of a metal superlens to image with the resolution exceeding the diffraction limitation is different from that of a perfect lens made of a double negative material. The principle of metal superlens is disclosed. Our numerical results based on the zero-refraction character coincide with the experimental results well. This work brings new understanding about the single negative materials and will lead the applications of metal superlens in right way.

A very bright i=16.44 quasar in the `redshift desert' discovered by LAMOST

The redshift range from 2.2 to 3, is known as the 'redshift desert' of quasars because quasars with redshift in this range have similar optical colors as normal stars and are thus difficult to be found in optical sky surveys. A quasar candidate, SDSS J085543.40-001517.7, which was selected by a recently proposed criterion involving near-IR $Y-K$ and optical $g-z$ colors, was identified spectroscopically as a new quasar with redshift of 2.427 by the LAMOST commissioning observation in December 2009 and confirmed by the observation made with the NAOC/Xinglong 2.16m telescope in March 2010. This quasar was not targeted in the SDSS spectroscopic survey because it locates in the stellar locus of the optical color-color diagrams, while it is clearly separated from stars in the $Y-K$ vs. $g-z$ diagram. Comparing with other SDSS quasars we found this new quasar with $i$ magnitude of 16.44 is apparently the brightest one in the redshift range from 2.3 to 2.7. From the spectral properties we derived its central black hole mass as $(1.4\sim3.9) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$ and the bolometric luminosity as $3.7\times 10^{48}$ \ergs, which indicates that this new quasar is intrinsically very bright and belongs to the most luminous quasars in the universe. Our identification supports that quasars in the redshift desert can be found by the quasar selection criterion involving the near-IR colors. More missing quasars are expected to be recovered by the future LAMOST spectroscopic surveys, which is important to the study of the cosmological evolution of quasars at redshift higher than 2.2.

Eight new quasars discovered by LAMOST in one extragalactic field

We report the discovery of eight new quasars in one extragalactic field (five degree centered at RA=$08^h58^m08.2^s$, Dec=$01^o32'29.7''$) with the LAMOST commissioning observations on December 18, 2009. These quasars, with $i$ magnitudes from 16.44 to 19.34 and redshifts from 0.898 to 2.773, were not identified in the SDSS spectroscopic survey, though six of them with redshifts less than 2.5 were selected as quasar targets in SDSS. Except one source without near-IR $Y$-band data, seven of these eight new quasars meet a newly proposed quasar selection criterion involving both near-IR and optical colors. Two of them were found in the 'redshift desert' for quasars ($z$ from 2.2 to 3), indicating that the new criterion is efficient for recovering the missing quasars with similar optical colors as stars. Although LAMOST met some problems during the commissioning observations, we were still able to identify other 38 known SDSS quasars in this field, with $i$ magnitudes from 16.24 to 19.10 and redshifts from 0.297 to 4.512. Our identifications imply that a substantial fraction of quasars may be missing in the previous quasar surveys. The implication of our results to the future LAMOST quasar survey is discussed.

Quantum Interference of Stored Coherent Spin-wave Excitations in a Two-channel Memory

Quantum memories are essential elements in long-distance quantum networks and quantum computation. Significant advances have been achieved in demonstrating relative long-lived single-channel memory at single-photon level in cold atomic media. However, the qubit memory corresponding to store two-channel spin-wave excitations (SWEs) still faces challenges, including the limitations resulting from Larmor procession, fluctuating ambient magnetic field, and manipulation/measurement of the relative phase between the two channels. Here, we demonstrate a two-channel memory scheme in an ideal tripod atomic system, in which the total readout signal exhibits either constructive or destructive interference when the two-channel SWEs are retrieved by two reading beams with a controllable relative phase. Experimental result indicates quantum coherence between the stored SWEs. Based on such phase-sensitive storage/retrieval scheme, measurements of the relative phase between the two SWEs and Rabi oscillation, as well as elimination of the collapse and revival of the readout signal, are experimentally demonstrated.

Ultralong Copper Phthalocyanine Nanowires with New Crystal Structure and Broad Optical Absorption

The development of molecular nanostructures plays a major role in emerging organic electronic applications, as it leads to improved performance and is compatible with our increasing need for miniaturisation. In particular, nanowires have been obtained from solution or vapour phase and have displayed high conductivity, or large interfacial areas in solar cells. In all cases however, the crystal structure remains as in films or bulk, and the exploitation of wires requires extensive post-growth manipulation as their orientations are random. Here we report copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) nanowires with diameters of 10-100 nm, high directionality and unprecedented aspect ratios. We demonstrate that they adopt a new crystal phase, designated eta-CuPc, where the molecules stack along the long axis. The resulting high electronic overlap along the centimetre length stacks achieved in our wires mediates antiferromagnetic couplings and broadens the optical absorption spectrum. The ability to fabricate ultralong, flexible metal phthalocyanine nanowires opens new possibilities for applications of these simple molecules.
