Oscillating kink behavior in a traversable wormhole

We investigate the time evolution of spherically symmetric radial domain walls (kinks) in the background of a two-way traversable Simpson-Visser wormhole. By numerically solving the scalar-field equation with a double-well potential, we show that the wormhole throat parameter $a$ has a strong impact on the dynamics of the radial kink: larger $a$ leads to wider throats and allows the domain wall to oscillate across the throat with large amplitude, whereas smaller $a$ confines the motion nearby the throat. In addition, each time the kink crosses the wormhole throat, it emits scalar wave packets, causing its oscillation amplitude to gradually decrease. Our results reveal how the wormhole geometry influences the motion of defects and their energy transfer, providing new insights into the dynamics of topological defects in exotic spacetime.

On the Imaginary Part of the Effective Action in de Sitter Spacetime with Different Regularization Schemes

The imaginary part of the effective action encodes vacuum instability and particle production in the background field. Two standard approaches are commonly used to derive it: the Bogoliubov method and the Green's function method, which are usually expected to agree. However, in de Sitter spacetime they yield different results. We revisit this problem by introducing explicit time and momentum cutoffs in the Green's function representation of the effective action. The apparent discrepancy is found to be due to the different limiting procedures in regularization, which reproduces the Bogoliubov result and the Green's function result respectively. Therefore, the two approaches are understood to be different regularization limits of the same expression, which clarifies the origin of their disagreement.

Holographic topological defects in a ring: role of diverse boundary conditions

We investigate the formation of topological defects in the course of a dynamical phase transition with different boundary conditions in a ring from AdS/CFT correspondence. According to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, quenching the system across the critical point to symmetry-breaking phase will result in topological defects -- winding numbers -- in a compact ring. By setting two different boundary conditions, i.e., Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions for the spatial component of the gauge fields in the AdS boundary, we achieve the holographic superfluid and holographic superconductor models, respectively. In the final equilibrium state, different configurations of the order parameter phases for these two models indicate a persistent superflow in the holographic superfluid, however, the holographic superconductor lacks this superflow due to the existence of local gauge fields. The two-point correlation functions of the order parameter also behave differently. In particular, for holographic superfluid the correlation function is a cosine function depending on the winding number. The correlation function for the holographic superconductor, however, decays rapidly at short distances and vanishes at long distance, due to the random localities of the gauge fields. These results are consistent with our theoretical analysis.

Periodicities in a multiply connected geometry from quenched dynamics

Exploring the lowest energy configurations of a quantum system is consistent with the counting statistics of the frequently appeared states from quenching dynamics. By studying the Little-Parks periodicities in a multiply-connected ring-shaped geometry from the holographic technique, it is found that the frequently appeared states from dynamics incline to have lower free energies. In particular, the resulting winding numbers from quenched dynamics are constrained in a normal distribution for a fixed magnetic flux threading the ring. Varying the magnetic fluxes, Little-Parks periodicities will take place with periods identical to the flux quantum $Φ_0$. Favorable solutions with lowest free energies perform first order phase transitions which transform between distinct winding numbers as the magnetic flux equals half-integers multiplying $Φ_0$.

Thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture in Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black holes

We examine the laws of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the normal and extended phase space of Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black hole by considering a charged particle absorption. In the normal phase space, the first and second law of thermodynamics as well as the weak cosmic censorship are still valid. However, in the extended phase space, the second law of thermodynamics is violated for double-horizon black holes and part of single-horizon black holes. The first law of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture are still valid for all black holes. In addition, we find that the shift of the metric function, which determines the locations of the horizons, takes the same form at the minimum point in both the normal and extended phase space, indicating that the weak cosmic censorship conjecture is independent of the thermodynamic phase space.

Cosmic evolution in novel-Gauss Bonnet Gravity

In this short paper we investigate any non-trivial effect the novel Gauss-Bonnet gravity may give rise in the cosmic evolution of the Universe in four spacetime dimensions. We start by considering a generic Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric respecting homogeneity and isotropicity in arbitrary space-time dimension $D$. The metric depends on two functions: scale factor and lapse. Plugging this metric in novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity action, doing an integration by parts and then take the limit of $D\to4$ give us a dynamical action in four spacetime dimensions for scale factor and lapse. The peculiar rescaling of Gauss-Bonnet coupling by factor of $D-4$ results in a non-trivial contribution in the action of the theory. In this paper we study this action. We investigate the dynamics of scale-factor and behavior of lapse in an empty Universe (no matter). Due to complexity of the problem we study the theory to first order in Gauss-Bonnet coupling and solve system of equation to the first order. We compute the first order correction to the on-shell action of the empty Universe and find that its sign is opposite of the leading order part. We discuss it consequences.

Formation and critical dynamics of topological defects in Lifshitz holography

We examine the formation and critical dynamics of topological defects via Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical point, which is conjectured to dual to a Lifshitz geometry. Quantized magnetic fluxoids are spontaneously generated and trapped in the cores of order parameter vortices, which is a feature of type II superconductors. Time evolution of the average condensate is found to lag behind the instantaneous equilibrium value of the order parameter, a typical phenomenon in nonequilibrium dynamics. Scalings of vortex number density and the "freeze-out" time match the predictions from Kibble-Zurek mechanism. From these scalings, the dynamic and static critical exponents in the boundary field theory are found, at least at finite temperature, to be irrespective of the Lifshitz exponent in the bulk.

Lorentzian quantum cosmology in novel Gauss-Bonnet gravity from Picard-Lefschetz methods

In this paper we study some aspects of classical and quantum cosmology in the novel-Gauss-Bonnet (nGB) gravity in four space-time dimensions. Starting with a generalised Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson Walker (FLRW) metric respecting homogeneity and isotropicity in arbitrary space-time dimension $D$, we find the action of theory in four spacetime dimension where the limit $D\to4$ is smoothly obtained after an integration by parts. The peculiar rescaling of Gauss-Bonnet coupling by factor of $D-4$ results in a non-trivial contribution to the action. We study the system of equation of motion to first order nGB coupling. We then go on to compute the transition probability from one $3$-geometry to another directly in Lorentzian signature. We make use of combination of WKB approximation and Picard-Lefschetz (PL) theory to achieve our aim. PL theory allows to analyse the path-integral directly in Lorentzian signature without doing Wick rotation. Due to complication caused by non-linear nature of action, we compute the transition amplitude to first order in nGB coupling. We find non-trivial correction coming from the nGB coupling to the transition amplitude, even if the analysis was done perturbatively. We use this result to investigate the case of classical boundary conditions.

Holographic Thermalization and Generalized Vaidya-AdS Solutions in Massive Gravity

We investigate the effect of massive graviton on the holographic thermalization process. Before doing this, we first find out the generalized Vaidya-AdS solutions in the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity by directly solving the gravitational equations. Then, we study the thermodynamics of these Vaidya-AdS solutions by using the Minsner-Sharp energy and unified first law, which also shows that the massive gravity is in a thermodynamic equilibrium state. Moreover, we adopt the two-point correlation function at equal time to explore the thermalization process in the dual field theory, and to see how the graviton mass parameter affects this process from the viewpoint of AdS/CFT correspondence. Our results show that the graviton mass parameter will increase the holographic thermalization process.

Vortex in holographic two-band superfluid/superconductor

We construct numerically static vortex solutions in a holographic model of two-band superconductor with an interband Josephson coupling in both the superfluid and superconductor regime. We investigate the effects of the interband coupling on the order parameter of each superconducting band in the vortex solution, and we find that it is different for each of the two bands. We compute also the free energy, critical magnetic field, magnetic penetration length and coherence lengths for the two bands, and we study their dependence on the interband coupling and temperature. Interestingly, we find that the coherence lengths of the two bands are close to identical.

Holographic Josephson Junction from Massive Gravity

We study the holographic superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephon junction in the massive gravity. In the homogeneous case of the chemical potential, we find that the graviton mass will make the normal metal-superconductor phase transition harder to take place. In the holographic model of Josephson junction, it is found that the maximal tunneling current will decrease according to the graviton mass. Besides, the coherence length of the junction decreases as well with respect to the graviton mass. If one interprets the graviton mass as the effect of momentum dissipation in the boundary field theory, it indicates that the stronger the momentum dissipation is, the smaller the coherence length is.

Time Evolution of Entanglement Entropy in Quenched Holographic Superconductors

We investigate the dynamical evolution of entanglement entropy in a holographic superconductor model by quenching the source term of the dual charged scalar operator. By access to the full background geometry, the holographic entanglement entropy is calculated for a strip geometry at the AdS boundary. It is found that the entanglement entropy exhibits a robust non-monotonic behaviour in time, independent of the strength of Gaussian quench and the size of the strip: it first displays a small dip, then grows linearly, and finally saturates. In particular, the linear growth velocity of the entanglement entropy has an upper bound for strip with large width; The equilibrium value of the non-local probe at late time shows a power law scaling behaviour with respect to the quench strength; Moreover, the entanglement entropy can uncover the dynamical transition at certain critical quench strength which happens to coincide with the one obtained form the dynamical evolution of scalar order parameter.

Zeroth Order Phase Transition in a Holographic Superconductor with Single Impurity

We investigate the single normal impurity effect in a superconductor by the holographic method. When the size of impurity is much smaller than the host superconductor, we can reproduce the Anderson theorem, which states that a conventional s-wave superconductor is robust to a normal (non-magnetic) impurity with small impurity strength. However, by increasing the size of the impurity in a fixed-size host superconductor, we find a decreasing critical temperature $T_c$ of the host superconductor, which agrees with the results in condensed matter literatures. More importantly, the phase transition at the critical impurity strength (or the critical temperature) is of zeroth order.

Mimic the optical conductivity in disordered solids via gauge/gravity duality

We study the optical conductivity in a (2+1)-dimensional non-relativistic field theory holographically dual to a (3+1)-dimensional charged Lifshitz black brane with the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. Surprisingly, we find that the optical AC conductivity satisfies the nontrivial (non-)power law scaling in the high frequency regime rather than approaching to a constant when the dynamical critical exponent $z>1$, which is qualitatively similar to those in various disordered solids in condensed matter systems. Besides, this (non-)power law scaling behavior shows some universality, which is robust against the temperatures. We argue that the peculiar scaling behavior of AC conductivity may stem from the couplings of the dilaton field with the gauge fields and also the logarithmic behavior near the boundary in the Lifshitz spacetime.

Non-relativistic Josephson Junction from Holography

We construct a Josephson junction in non-relativistic case with a Lifshitz geometry as the dual gravity. We investigate the effect of the Lifshitz scaling in comparison with its relativistic counterpart. The standard sinusoidal relation between the current and the phase difference is found for various Lifshitz scalings characterised by the dynamical critical exponent. We also find the exponential decreasing relation between the condensate of the scalar operator within the barrier at zero current and the width of the weak link, as well as the relation between the critical current and the width. Nevertheless, the coherence lengths obtained from two exponential decreasing relations generically have discrepancies for non-relativistic dual.

Normal modes and time evolution of a holographic superconductor after a quantum quench

We employ holographic techniques to investigate the dynamics of the order parameter of a strongly coupled superconductor after a perturbation that drives the system out of equilibrium. The gravity dual that we employ is the ${\rm AdS}_5$ Soliton background at zero temperature. We first analyze the normal modes associated to the superconducting order parameter which are purely real since the background has no horizon. We then study the full time evolution of the order parameter after a quench. For sufficiently a weak and slow perturbation we show that the order parameter undergoes simple undamped oscillations in time with a frequency that agrees with the lowest normal model computed previously. This is expected as the soliton background has no horizon and therefore, at least in the probe and large $N$ limits considered, the system will never return to equilibrium. For stronger and more abrupt perturbations higher normal modes are excited and the pattern of oscillations becomes increasingly intricate. We identify a range of parameters for which the time evolution of the order parameter become quasi chaotic. The details of the chaotic evolution depend on the type of perturbation used. Therefore it is plausible to expect that it is possible to engineer a perturbation that leads to the almost complete destruction of the oscillating pattern and consequently to quasi equilibration induced by superposition of modes with different frequencies.

A holographic model of SQUID

We construct a holographic model of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) in the Einstein-Maxwell-complex scalar theory with a negative cosmological constant. The SQUID ring consists of two Josephson junctions which sit on two sides of a compactified spatial direction of a Schwarzschild-AdS black brane. These two junctions interfere with each other and then result in a total current depending on the magnetic flux, which can be deduced from the phase differences of the two Josephson junctions. The relation between the total current and the magnetic flux is obtained numerically.

Novel Features of the Transport Coefficients in Lifshitz Black Branes

We study the transport coefficients, including the conductivities and shear viscosity of the non-relativistic field theory dual to the Lifshitz black brane with multiple U(1) gauge fields by virtue of the gauge/gravity duality. Focusing on the case of double U(1) gauge fields, we systematically investigate the electric, thermal and thermoelectric conductivities for the dual non-relativistic field theory. In the large frequency regime, we find a nontrivial power law behavior in the electric AC conductivity when the dynamical critical exponent z>1 in (2+1)-dimensional field theory. The relations between this novel feature and the `symmetric hopping model' in condensed matter physics are discussed. In addition, we also show that the Kovtun-Starinets-Son bound for the shear viscosity to the entropy density is not violated by the additional U(1) gauge fields and dilaton in the Lifshitz black brane.

Holographic SIS Josephson Junction

We construct a holographic model for the superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) Josephson junction at zero temperature by considering a complex scalar field coupled with a Maxwell field in the four-dimensional anti-de Sitter soliton background. From the gravity side we reproduce the sine relation between the Josephson current and the phase difference across the junction. We also study the dependence of the maximal current on the dimension of the condensate operator and on the width of the junction, and obtain expected results.

Magnetic Field Effect on the Phase Transition in AdS Soliton Spacetime

We investigate the scalar perturbations in an AdS soliton background coupled to a Maxwell field via marginally stable modes. In the probe limit, we study the magnetic field effect on the holographic insulator/superconductor phase transition numerically and analytically. The condensate will be localized in a finite circular region for any finite constant magnetic field. Near the critical point, we find that there exists a simple relation among the critical chemical potential, magnetic field, the charge and mass of the scalar field. This relation indicates that the presence of the magnetic field causes the phase transition hard.

Non-Equilibrium Field Dynamics of an Honest Holographic Superconductor

Most holographic models of superconducting systems neglect the effects of dynamical boundary gauge fields during the process of spontaneous symmetry-breaking. Usually a global symmetry gets broken. This yields a superfluid, which then is gauged "weakly" afterwards. In this work we build (and probe the dynamics of) a holographic model in which a local boundary symmetry is spontaneously broken instead. We compute two-point functions of dynamical non-Abelian gauge fields in the normal and in the broken phase, and find non-trivial gapless modes. Our AdS3 gravity dual realizes a p-wave superconductor in (1+1) dimensions. The ground state of this model also breaks (1+1)-dimensional parity spontaneously, while the Hamiltonian is parity-invariant. We discuss possible implications of our results for a wider class of holographic liquids.

Wilson Line Response of Holographic Superconductors in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We study the Wilson line response in the holographic superconducting phase transitions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the black brane background case, the Little-Parks periodicity is independent of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter, while in the AdS soliton case, there is no evidence for the Little-Parks periodicity. We further study the impact of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the holographic phase transitions quantitatively. The results show that such quantum corrections can effectively affect the occurrence of the phase transitions and the response to the Wilson line.

Analytical Studies on Holographic Insulator/Superconductor Phase Transitions

We investigate the analytical properties of the s-wave and p-wave holographic insulator/superconductor phase transitions at zero temperature. In the probe limit, we analytically calculate the critical chemical potentials at which the insulator/superconductor phase transition occurs. Those resulting analytical values perfectly match the previous numerical values. We also study the relations between the condensation values and the chemical potentials near the critical point. We find that the critical exponent for condensation operator is 1/2 for both models. The linear relations between the charge density and the chemical potential near the critical point are also deduced in this paper, which are qualitatively consistent with the previous numerical results.

Analytical Studies on Holographic Superconductors in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We use the variational method for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem to analytically calculate some properties of holographic superconductors with Gauss-Bonnet gravity in probe limit. By studying the holographic p-wave and s-wave superconductors in (3+1)-dimensional boundary field theories, it is found that near the critical temperature, the critical exponent of the condensation is 1/2 which is the universal value in mean-field theory. We also find that when Gauss-Bonnet coefficients grow bigger the operators on the boundary field theory will be harder to condense. These are in good agreement with the numerical results.

Holographic Phase Transitions of P-wave Superconductors in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity with Back-reaction

We investigate the phase transitions of holographic p-wave superconductors in (4+1)-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills-Gauss-Bonnet theories, in a grand canonical ensemble. Turning on the back-reaction of the Yang-Mills field, it is found that the condensations of vector order parameter become harder if the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient grows up or the back-reaction becomes stronger. In particular, the vector order parameter exhibits the features of first order and second order phase transitions, while only the second order phase transition is observed in the probe limit. We discuss the roles that the Gauss-Bonnet term and the back-reaction play in changing the order of phase transition.

Phase transitions in AdS soliton spacetime through marginally stable modes

We investigate the marginally stable modes of the scalar (vector) perturbations in the AdS soliton background coupled to electric field. In the probe limit, we find that the marginally stable modes can reveal the onset of the phase transitions of this model. The critical chemical potentials obtained from this approach are in good agreement with the previous numerical or analytical results.

Holographic p-wave superconductors from Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We study the holographic p-wave superconductors in a five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity with an SU(2) Yang-Mills gauge field. In the probe approximation, we find that when the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient grows, the condensation of the vector field becomes harder, both the perpendicular and parallel components, with respect to the direction of the condensation, of the anisotropic conductivity decrease. We also study the mass of the quasi-particle excitations, the gap frequency and the DC conductivities of the p-wave superconductor. All of them depend on the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient. In addition we observe a strange behavior for the condensation and the relation between the gap frequency and the mass of quasi-particles when the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient is larger than 9/100, which is the upper bound for the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient from the causality of the dual field theory.

Quasinormal Modes of Charged Fermions and Phase Transition of Black Holes

We study the quasinormal modes of massless charged fermions in a Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime. In the probe limit, we find that the imaginary part of quasinormal frequency will become positive when the temperature of the black hole is below a critical value. This indicates an instability of the black hole occurs and a phase transition happens. In the AdS/CFT correspondence, this transition can be viewed as a superconducting phase transition and the bulk fermion is regarded as the order parameter. When the coupling of the fermions and the background electric field becomes stronger, the critical temperature of the phase transition becomes higher. If the interaction between the fermion and the electric field can be ignored, namely in the case of a neutral fermion, the imaginary part of the quasinormal modes is always negative, which indicates that the black hole is stable and no phase transition occurs.

Holographic Superconductors with Hořava-Lifshitz Black Holes

We discuss the phase transition of planar black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity by introducing a Maxwell field and a complex scalar field. We calculate the condensates of the charged operators in the dual CFTs when the mass square of the complex scalar filed is $m^2=-2/L^2$ and $m^2=0$, respectively. We compute the electrical conductivity of the \hl superconductor in the probe approximation. In particular, it is found that there exists a spike in the conductivity for the case of the operator with scaling dimension one. These results are quite similar to those in the case of Schwarzschild-AdS black holes, which demonstrates that the holographic superconductivity is a robust phenomenon associated with asymptotic AdS black holes.

Cosmological Solutions with Torsion in a Model of de Sitter Gauge Theory of Gravity

The torsion is shown to be vitally important in the explanation of the evolution of the universe in a large class of gravitational theories containing quadratic terms of curvature and torsion. The cosmological solutions with homogeneous and isotropic torsion in a model of de Sitter gauge theory of gravity are presented, which may explain the observation data for SN Ia when parameters are suitably chosen and supply a natural transit from decelerating expansion to accelerating expansion without the help of the introduction of other strange fields in the theory.
