Giant vortex in a fast rotating holographic superfluid

In a holographic superfluid disk, when the rotational velocity is large enough, we find a giant vortex will form in the center of the system by merging several single charge vortices at some specific rotational velocity, with a phase stratification phenomenon for the order parameter. The formation of a giant vortex can be explained as there is not enough space for a standard vortex lattice. Keep increasing the rotational velocity the giant vortex will disappear and there will be an appearance of a superfluid ring. In the giant vortex region, the number of vortices measured from winding number and rotational velocity always satisfies the linear Feynman relation. However, when the superfluid ring starts to appear, the number of vortices in the disk will decrease though the rotational velocity is increasing, where most of the order parameter is suppressed.

H-T phase diagrams of a holographic p-wave superfluid

We study the competition between the p-wave and the p+ip superfluid solutions in a holographic model with applied magnetic field intensity $H$. We find that when $H$ is turned on, both the grand potential and the critical temperature of the p+ip solution are shifted, while the p-wave solution is only slightly affected. Combining the effect of $H$ and back reaction parameter b, we build $H-T$ phase diagrams with a slit region of p+ip phase. The zero (or finite) value of $H$ at the starting point of the slit region is related to second (or first) order of the p-wave phase transition at zero magnetic intensity, which should be universal in systems with degenerate critical points (spinodal points) at zero magnetic field.

Holographic Abrikosov lattice: vortex matter from black hole

The AdS/CFT correspondence provides a unique way to study the vortex matter phases in superconductors. We solved the nonlinear equations of motion for the Abelain-Higgs theory living on the AdS$_4$ black hole boundary that is dual to a two dimensional strongly coupled type II superconductor at temperature $T$ with a perpendicular external uniform magnetic field $B_0$. We found the associated two critical magnetic fields, $B_{c1}(T)$ and $B_{c2}(T)$. For $B_0 < B_{c1}(T)$ the magnetic field will be expelled out by the superconductor resembling the Meissner effect and the superconductivity will be destroyed when $B_0 > B_{c2}(T)$. The Abrikosov lattice appears in the range $B_{c1}(T) < B_0 < B_{c2}(T)$ including, due to the finite size and boundary effect, several kinds of configurations such as hexagonal, square and slightly irregular square lattices, when the magnetic field is increased. The upper and lower critical fields behave as inverse squares of coherence length and magnetic penetration depth respectively which matches the well known consensus.

Formation and critical dynamics of topological defects in Lifshitz holography

We examine the formation and critical dynamics of topological defects via Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical point, which is conjectured to dual to a Lifshitz geometry. Quantized magnetic fluxoids are spontaneously generated and trapped in the cores of order parameter vortices, which is a feature of type II superconductors. Time evolution of the average condensate is found to lag behind the instantaneous equilibrium value of the order parameter, a typical phenomenon in nonequilibrium dynamics. Scalings of vortex number density and the "freeze-out" time match the predictions from Kibble-Zurek mechanism. From these scalings, the dynamic and static critical exponents in the boundary field theory are found, at least at finite temperature, to be irrespective of the Lifshitz exponent in the bulk.

Fractional and Integer Vortex Dynamics in Strongly Coupled Two-component Bose-Einstein Condensates from AdS/CFT Correspondence

In order to study the rotating strongly coupled Bose-Einstein condensations(BEC), a holographic model defined in an AdS black hole that duals to a coupled two-component condensations in global $U(1)$ symmetry broken phase with intercomponent coupling $η$ and internal coherent coupling $ε$ is proposed. By solving the dynamics of the model, we study the process of formation and also the crossover from fractional to integer vortex phases. With changing only $η$ from zero to a finite value, fractional vortex lattices undergo a transition from hexagon to square lattice and finally to vortex sheets. By continuing to turn on $ε$, we find that two fractional vortices in different components constitute dimers, and when $η$ transcend a critical value, multi-dimer like hexamer or tetramer made up of two and three dimers appear. As $ε$ keeps increasing, some dimers rotate to adjust themselves and then constitute the lattice of integer vortices. Under an initial conditions similar to an spinor BEC vortices dynamics experiment, the appearance of disordered turbulence is found in the process of fractional vortex generation, which matches the experimental observation. While in the formation process of integer vortices, the appearance of grooves is predicted.

Holographic Josephson Junction from Massive Gravity

We study the holographic superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephon junction in the massive gravity. In the homogeneous case of the chemical potential, we find that the graviton mass will make the normal metal-superconductor phase transition harder to take place. In the holographic model of Josephson junction, it is found that the maximal tunneling current will decrease according to the graviton mass. Besides, the coherence length of the junction decreases as well with respect to the graviton mass. If one interprets the graviton mass as the effect of momentum dissipation in the boundary field theory, it indicates that the stronger the momentum dissipation is, the smaller the coherence length is.

Analytical Computation of Critical Exponents in Several Holographic Superconductors

It is very interesting that all holographic superconductors, such as s-wave, p-wave and d-wave holographic superconductors, show the universal mean-field critical exponent 1/2 at the critical temperature, just like Gindzburg-Landau (G-L) theory for second order phase transitions. Now it is believed that the universal critical exponents appear because the dual gravity theory is classic in the large $N$ limit. However, even in the large $N$ limit there is an exception called "non-mean-field theory": an extension of the s-wave model with a cubic term of the charged scalar field shows a different critical exponent 1. In this paper, we try to use analytical methods to obtain the critical exponents for these models to see how the properties of the gravity action decides the appearance of the mean-field behaviors. It will be seen that just like the G-L theory, it is the fundamental symmetries rather than the detailed parameters of the bulk theory that lead to the universal properties of the holographic superconducting phase transition. The feasibility of the called "non-mean-field theory" is also discussed.

Dynamic gap from holographic fermions in charged dilaton black branes

We report a dynamical formation of a (Mott) gap from holographic fermions. By coupling a fermion field with dipole action to the charged dilaton black branes with a Lifshitz like IR geometry and $AdS_{4}$ boundary, we find that when the dipole interaction is large enough, spectral weight is transferred between bands, and beyond a critical dipole interaction, a gap emerges in the fermion density of states. The value of the gap becomes larger as the strength of the interaction keeps increasing.

Non-Equilibrium Field Dynamics of an Honest Holographic Superconductor

Most holographic models of superconducting systems neglect the effects of dynamical boundary gauge fields during the process of spontaneous symmetry-breaking. Usually a global symmetry gets broken. This yields a superfluid, which then is gauged "weakly" afterwards. In this work we build (and probe the dynamics of) a holographic model in which a local boundary symmetry is spontaneously broken instead. We compute two-point functions of dynamical non-Abelian gauge fields in the normal and in the broken phase, and find non-trivial gapless modes. Our AdS3 gravity dual realizes a p-wave superconductor in (1+1) dimensions. The ground state of this model also breaks (1+1)-dimensional parity spontaneously, while the Hamiltonian is parity-invariant. We discuss possible implications of our results for a wider class of holographic liquids.

One dimensional s-wave holographic superconductor with supercurrent

We study the one dimensional s-wave holographic superconductor by turning on the vector potential $A_x$ in the bulk, which behaves as $A_x=A_x^{(0)} \ln z+ A_x^{(1)}$ on the boundary. By solving the model with fixed $A_x^{(0)}$, we find that if we identify the $A_x^{(0)}$ with the supercurrent $j_x$ of the holographic superconductor, the results agree with the Gindzburg- Landau theory. For example, $A_x^{(0)}$ will break the superconductivity, and the critical value of $A_x^{(0)}$ is proportional to $(T_c-T)^{3/2}$.

Supercurrent in p-wave Holographic Superconductor

The p-wave and $p+ip$-wave holographic superconductors with fixed DC supercurrent are studied by introducing a non-vanishing vector potential. We find that close to the critical temperature $T_c$ of zero current, the numerical results of both the p wave model and the $p+ip$ model are the same as those of Ginzburg-Landau (G-L) theory, for example, the critical current $j_c \sim (T_c-T)^{3/2}$ and the phase transition in the presence of a DC current is a first order transition. Besides the similar results between both models, the $p+ip$ superconductor shows isotropic behavior for the supercurrent, while the p-wave superconductor shows anisotropic behavior for the supercurrent.

Characteristic length of a Holographic Superconductor with $d$-wave gap

After the discovery of the $s$-wave and $p$-wave holographic superconductors, holographic models of $d$-wave superconductor have also been constructed recently. We study analytically the perturbation of the dual gravity theory to calculate the superconducting coherence length $ξ$ of the $d$-wave holographic superconductor near the superconducting phase transition point. The superconducting coherence length $ξ$ divergents as $(1-T/T_c)^{-1/2}$ near the critical temperature $T_c$. We also obtain the magnetic penetration depth $λ\propto(T_c-T)^{-1/2}$ by adding a small external homogeneous magnetic field. The results agree with the $s$-wave and $p$-wave models, which are also the same as the Ginzburg-Landau theory.

d-wave Holographic Superconductor Vortex Lattice and Non-Abelian Holographic Superconductor Droplet

A d-wave holographic superconductor is studied under a constant magnetic field by perturbation method, we obtain both droplet and triangular vortex lattice solution. The results are the same as the s-wave holographic superconductor. The non-Abelian holographic superconductor with $p+ip$-wave background is also studied under magnetic field, unlike the d-wave and s-wave models, we find that the non-Abelian model has only droplet solution.

Superconducting Coherence Length and Magnetic Penetration Depth of a p-wave Holographic Superconductor

A classical SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is believed to be dual to a p-wave superconductor in 2+1 dimensional flat spacetime. In order to calculate the superconductiong coherence length $ξ$ of the holographic superconductor near the superconducting phase transition point, we study the perturbation of the gravity theory analytically. The superconductiong coherence length $ξ$ is found to be proportional to $(1-T/T_c)^{-1/2}$ near the critical temperature $T_c$. We also obtain the magnetic penetration depth $λ\propto(T_c-T)^{1/2}$ by adding a small external homogeneous magnetic field. The results agree with the Ginzburg-Landau theory.
