Stabilizing entanglement via symmetry-selective bath engineering in superconducting qubits

Bath engineering, which utilizes coupling to lossy modes in a quantum system to generate non-trivial steady states, is a tantalizing alternative to gate- and measurement-based quantum science. Here, we demonstrate dissipative stabilization of entanglement between two superconducting transmon qubits in a symmetry-selective manner. We utilize the engineered symmetries of the dissipative environment to stabilize a target Bell state; we further demonstrate suppression of the Bell state of opposite symmetry due to parity selection rules. This implementation is resource-efficient, achieves a steady-state fidelity $\mathcal{F} = 0.70$, and is scalable to multiple qubits.

Proposed Rabi-Kondo Correlated State in a Laser-Driven Semiconductor Quantum Dot

Spin exchange between a single-electron charged quantum dot and itinerant electrons leads to an emergence of Kondo correlations. When the quantum dot is driven resonantly by weak laser light, the resulting emission spectrum allows for a direct probe of these correlations. In the opposite limit of vanishing exchange interaction and strong laser drive, the quantum dot exhibits coherent oscillations between the single-spin and optically excited states. Here, we show that the interplay between strong exchange and non-perturbative laser coupling leads to the formation of a new nonequilibrium quantum-correlated state, characterized by the emergence of a laser-induced secondary spin screening cloud, and examine the implications for the emission spectrum.

Antisymmetric PT-photonic structures with balanced positive and negative index materials

We propose a new class of synthetic optical materials in which the refractive index satisfies $n(-\bx)=-n^*(\bx)$. We term such systems antisymmetric parity-time (APT) structures. Unlike PT-symmetric systems which require balanced gain and loss, i.e. $n(-\bx)=n^*(\bx)$, APT systems consist of balanced positive and negative index materials. Despite the seemingly PT-symmetric optical potential $V(\bx)\equiv n(\bx)^2ω^2/c^2$, APT systems are not invariant under combined PT operations due to the discontinuity of the spatial derivative of the wavefunction. We show that APT systems can display intriguing properties such as spontaneous phase transition of the scattering matrix, bidirectional invisibility, and a continuous lasing spectrum.

Photon correlations in a two-site non-linear cavity system under coherent drive and dissipation

We calculate the normalized second-order correlation function for a system of two tunnel-coupled photonic resonators, each one exhibiting a single-photon nonlinearity of the Kerr type. We employ a full quantum formulation: the master equation for the model, which takes into account both a coherent continuous drive and radiative as well as non-radiative dissipation channels, is solved analytically in steady state through a perturbative approach, and the results are compared to exact numerical simulations. The degree of second-order coherence displays values between 0 and 1, and divides the diagram identified by the two energy scales of the system - the tunneling and the nonlinear Kerr interaction - into two distinct regions separated by a crossover. When the tunneling term dominates over the nonlinear one, the system state is delocalized over both cavities and the emitted light is coherent. In the opposite limit, photon blockade sets in and the system shows an insulator-like state with photons locked on each cavity, identified by antibunching of emitted light.

Signatures of the super fluid-insulator phase transition in laser driven dissipative nonlinear cavity arrays

We analyze the non-equilibrium dynamics of a gas of interacting photons in an array of coupled dissipative nonlinear cavities driven by a pulsed external coherent field. Using a mean-field approach, we show that the system exhibits a phase transition from a Mott-insulator-like to a superfluid regime. For a given single-photon nonlinearity, the critical value of the photon tunneling rate at which the phase transition occurs increases with the increasing photon loss rate. We checked the robustness of the transition by showing its insensitivity to the initial state prepared by the the pulsed excitation. We find that the second-order coherence of cavity emission can be used to determine the phase diagram of an optical many-body system without the need for thermalization.

A Gaussian-optical Approach to Stable Periodic Orbit Resonances of Partially Chaotic Dielectric Micro-cavities

The quasi-bound modes localized on stable periodic ray orbits of dielectric micro-cavities are constructed in the short-wavelength limit using the parabolic equation method. These modes are shown to coexist with irregularly spaced "chaotic" modes for the generic case. The wavevector quantization rule for the quasi-bound modes is derived and given a simple physical interpretation in terms of Fresnel reflection; quasi-bound modes are explictly constructed and compared to numerical results. The effect of discrete symmetries of the resonator is analyzed and shown to give rise to quasi-degenerate multiplets; the average splitting of these multiplets is calculated by methods from quantum chaos theory.
