A note on asymptotic behavior of critical Galton-Watson processes with immigration

In this somewhat didactic note we give a detailed alternative proof of the known result due to Wei and Winnicki (1989) which states that under second order moment assumptions on the offspring and immigration distributions the sequence of appropriately scaled random step functions formed from a critical Galton-Watson process with immigration (starting from not necessarily zero) converges weakly towards a squared Bessel process. The proof of Wei and Winnicki (1989) is based on infinitesimal generators, while we use limit theorems for random step processes towards a diffusion process due to Ispány and Pap (2010). This technique was already used in Ispány (2008), where he proved functional limit theorems for a sequence of some appropriately normalized nearly critical Galton-Watson processes with immigration starting from zero, where the offspring means tend to its critical value 1. As a special case of Theorem 2.1 in Ispány (2008) one can get back the result of Wei and Winnicki (1989) in the case of zero initial value. In the present note we handle non-zero initial values with the technique used in Ispány (2008), and further, we simplify some of the arguments in the proof of Theorem 2.1 in Ispány (2008) as well.

Convergence of partial sum processes to stable processes with application for aggregation of branching processes

We provide a generalization of Theorem 1 in Bartkiewicz, Jakubowski, Mikosch and Wintenberger (2011) in the sense that we give sufficient conditions for weak convergence of finite dimensional distributions of the partial sum processes of a strongly stationary sequence to the corresponding finite dimensional distributions of a non-Gaussian stable process instead of weak convergence of the partial sums themselves to a non-Gaussian stable distribution. As an application, we describe the asymptotic behaviour of finite dimensional distributions of aggregation of independent copies of a strongly stationary subcritical Galton--Watson branching process with regularly varying immigration having index in $(0, 1) \cup (1, 4/3)$ in a so-called iterated case, namely when first taking the limit as the time scale and then the number of copies tend to infinity.

Iterated scaling limits for aggregation of random coefficient AR(1) and INAR(1) processes

We discuss joint temporal and contemporaneous aggregation of $N$ independent copies of strictly stationary AR(1) and INteger-valued AutoRegressive processes of order 1 (INAR(1)) with random coefficient $α\in (0, 1)$ and idiosyncratic innovations. Assuming that $α$ has a density function of the form $ψ(x) (1 - x)^β$, $x \in (0, 1)$, with $\lim_{x\uparrow 1} ψ(x) = ψ_1 \in (0, \infty)$, different Brownian limit processes of appropriately centered and scaled aggregated partial sums are shown to exist in case $β=1$ when taking first the limit as $N \to \infty$ and then the time scale $n \to \infty$, or vice versa. This paper completes the one of Pilipauskaitė and Surgailis (2014), and Barczy, Nedényi and Pap (2015), where the iterated limits are given for every other possible value of the parameter $β$ for the two types of models.

Statistical inference of 2-type critical Galton-Watson processes with immigration

In this paper the asymptotic behavior of the conditional least squares estimators of the offspring mean matrix for a 2-type critical positively regular Galton-Watson branching process with immigration is described. We also study this question for a natural estimator of the spectral radius of the offspring mean matrix, which we call criticality parameter. We discuss the subcritical case as well.

Asymptotic behavior of critical irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching processes with immigration

Under natural assumptions, a Feller type diffusion approximation is derived for critical, irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching processes with immigration. Namely, it is proved that a sequence of appropriately scaled random step functions formed from a critical, irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration converges weakly towards a squared Bessel process supported by a ray determined by the Perron vector of a matrix related to the branching mechanism of the branching process in question.

Asymptotic inference for a stochastic differential equation with uniformly distributed time delay

For affine stochastic differential equation with uniformly distributed time delay the local asymptotic properties of the likelihood function are studied. Local asymptotic normality, local asymptotic mixed normality, periodic local asymptotic mixed normality or local asymptotic quadraticity is proved for different values of the parameter. Applications to the asymptotic behaviour of the maximum likelihood estimator of the parameter based on continuous sample are given.

Asymptotic properties of maximum likelihood estimators for Heston models based on continuous time observations

We study asymptotic properties of maximum likelihood estimators for Heston models based on continuous time observations of the log-price process. We distinguish three cases: subcritical (also called ergodic), critical and supercritical. In the subcritical case, asymptotic normality is proved for all the parameters, while in the critical and supercritical cases, non-standard asymptotic behavior is described.

Blocking optimal arborescences

The problem of covering minimum cost common bases of two matroids is NP-complete, even if the two matroids coincide, and the costs are all equal to 1. In this paper we show that the following special case is solvable in polynomial time: given a digraph $D=(V,A)$ with a designated root node $r\in V$ and arc-costs $c:A\to \mathbb{R}$, find a minimum cardinality subset $H$ of the arc set $A$ such that $H$ intersects every minimum $c$-cost $r$-arborescence. By an $r$-arborescence we mean a spanning arborescence of root $r$. The algorithm we give solves a weighted version as well, in which a nonnegative weight function $w:A\to \mathbb{R}_+$ (unrelated to $c$) is also given, and we want to find a subset $H$ of the arc set such that $H$ intersects every minimum $c$-cost $r$-arborescence, and $w(H)=\sum_{a\in H}w(a)$ is minimum. The running time of the algorithm is $O(n^3T(n,m))$, where $n$ and $m$ denote the number of nodes and arcs of the input digraph, and $T(n,m)$ is the time needed for a minimum $s-t$ cut computation in this digraph. A polyhedral description is not given, and seems rather challenging.

Blocking unions of arborescences

Given a digraph $D=(V,A)$ and a positive integer $k$, a subset $B\subseteq A$ is called a \textbf{$k$-union-arborescence}, if it is the disjoint union of $k$ spanning arborescences. When also arc-costs $c:A\to \mathbb{R}$ are given, minimizing the cost of a $k$-union-arborescence is well-known to be tractable. In this paper we take on the following problem: what is the minimum cardinality of a set of arcs the removal of which destroys every minimum $c$-cost $k$-union-arborescence. Actually, the more general weighted problem is also considered, that is, arc weights $w:A\to \mathbb{R}_+$ (unrelated to $c$) are also given, and the goal is to find a minimum weight set of arcs the removal of which destroys every minimum $c$-cost $k$-union-arborescence. An equivalent version of this problem is where the roots of the arborescences are fixed in advance. In an earlier paper [A. Bernáth and Gy. Pap, \emph{Blocking optimal arborescences}, Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization, Springer, 2013] we solved this problem for $k=1$. This work reports on other partial results on the problem. We solve the case when both $c$ and $w$ are uniform -- that is, find a minimum size set of arcs that covers all $k$-union-arbosercences. Our algorithm runs in polynomial time for this problem. The solution uses a result of [M. Bárász, J. Becker, and A. Frank, \emph{An algorithm for source location in directed graphs}, Oper. Res. Lett. \textbf{33} (2005)] saying that the family of so-called insolid sets (sets with the property that every proper subset has a larger in-degree) satisfies the Helly-property, and thus can be (efficiently) represented as a subtree hypergraph. We also give an algorithm for the case when only $c$ is uniform but $w$ is not. This algorithm is only polynomial if $k$ is not part of the input.

Change detection in the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross model

We propose a change detection method for the famous Cox--Ingersoll--Ross model. This model is widely used in financial mathematics and therefore detecting a change in its parameters is of crucial importance. We develop one- and two-sided testing procedures for both drift parameters of the process. The test process is based on estimators that are motivated by the discrete time least-squares estimators, and its asymptotic distribution under the no-change hypothesis is that of a Brownian bridge. We prove the asymptotic weak consistence of the test, and derive the asymptotic properties of the change-point estimator under the alternative hypothesis of change at one point in time.

On convergence properties of infinitesimal generators of scaled multi-type CBI processes

It is a common method for proving weak convergence of a sequence of time-homogeneous Markov processes towards a time-homogeneous Markov process first to show convergence of the corresponding infinitesimal generators and then to check some additional conditions. The aim of the present paper is to investigate convergence properties of discrete infinitesimal generators of appropriately scaled random step functions formed from a multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration. We also present a convergence result for usual infinitesimal generators of the branching processes in question appropriately normalized.

Asymptotic behavior of critical indecomposable multi-type branching processes with immigration

In this paper the asymptotic behavior of a critical multi-type branching process with immigration is described when the offspring mean matrix is irreducible, in other words, when the process is indecomposable. It is proved that sequences of appropriately scaled random step functions formed from periodic subsequences of a critical indecomposable multi-type branching process with immigration converge weakly towards a process supported by a ray determined by the Perron vector of the offspring mean matrix. The types can be partitioned into nonempty mutually disjoint subsets (according to communication of types) such that the coordinate processes belonging to the same subset are multiples of the same squared Bessel process, and the coordinate processes belonging to different subsets are independent.

Dilatively stable stochastic processes and aggregate similarity

Dilatively stable processes generalize the class of infinitely divisible self-similar processes. We reformulate and extend the definition of dilative stability introduced by Iglói (2008) using characteristic functions. We also generalize the concept of aggregate similarity introduced by Kaj (2005). It turns out that these two notions are essentially the same for infinitely divisible processes. Examples of dilatively stable generalized fractional Lévy processes are given and we point out that certain limit processes in aggregation models are dilatively stable.

Joint ML estimation of all parameters in a discrete time random field HJM type interest rate model

We consider discrete time Heath-Jarrow-Morton type interest rate models, where the interest rate curves are driven by a geometric spatial autoregression field. Strong consistency and asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters are proved for stable no-arbitrage models containing a general stochastic discounting factor, where explicit form of the ML estimators is not available given a non-i.i.d. sample. The results form the basis of further statistical problems in such models.

Yamada-Watanabe results for stochastic differential equations with jumps

Recently, Kurtz (2007, 2014) obtained a general version of the Yamada-Watanabe and Engelbert theorems relating existence and uniqueness of weak and strong solutions of stochastic equations covering also the case of stochastic differential equations with jumps. Following the original method of Yamada and Watanabe (1971), we give alternative proofs for the following two statements: pathwise uniqueness implies uniqueness in the sense of probability law, and weak existence together with pathwise uniqueness imply strong existence for stochastic differential equations with jumps.

An algorithm for weighted fractional matroid matching

Let M be a matroid on ground set E. A subset l of E is called a `line' when its rank equals 1 or 2. Given a set L of lines, a `fractional matching' in (M,L) is a nonnegative vector x indexed by the lines in L, that satisfies a system of linear constraints, one for each flat of M. Fractional matchings were introduced by Vande Vate, who showed that the set of fractional matchings is a half-integer relaxation of the matroid matching polytope. It was shown by Chang et al. that a maximum size fractional matching can be found in polynomial time. In this paper we give a polynomial time algorithm to find for any given weights on the lines in L, a maximum weight fractional matching.

Asymptotic behavior of CLS estimators for unstable INAR(2) models

In this paper the asymptotic behavior of the conditional least squares estimators of the autoregressive parameters $(α,β)$, of the stability parameter $\varrho := α+ β$, and of the mean $μ$ of the innovation $\vare_k$, $k \in \NN$, for an unstable integer-valued autoregressive process $X_k = α\circ X_{k-1} + β\circ X_{k-2} + \vare_k$, $k \in \NN$, is described. The limit distributions and the scaling factors are different according to the following three cases: (i) decomposable, (ii) indecomposable but not positively regular, and (iii) positively regular models.

On parameter estimation for critical affine processes

First we provide a simple set of sufficient conditions for the weak convergence of scaled affine processes with state space $R_+ \times R^d$. We specialize our result to one-dimensional continuous state branching processes with immigration. As an application, we study the asymptotic behavior of least squares estimators of some parameters of a two-dimensional critical affine diffusion process.

Asymptotic behavior of critical primitive multi-type branching processes with immigration

Under natural assumptions a Feller type diffusion approximation is derived for critical multi-type branching processes with immigration when the offspring mean matrix is primitive (in other words, positively regular). Namely, it is proved that a sequence of appropriately scaled random step functions formed from a sequence of critical primitive multi-type branching processes with immigration converges weakly towards a squared Bessel process supported by a ray determined by the Perron vector of the offspring mean matrix.

Change detection in INAR(p) processes against various alternative hypotheses

Change in the coefficients or in the mean of the innovation distribution of an INAR(p) process is a sign of disturbance that is important to detect. The methods of this paper can test for change in any one of these quantities separately, or in any collection of them. They are available in forms that make one-sided tests possible, furthermore, they can be used to test for a temporary change. The tests are based on a CUSUM process using conditional least squares estimators of the parameters. Under alternative hypotheses consistency of the tests is proved and the large sample properties of the change-point estimator are also explored.

Testing stability in a spatial unilateral autoregressive model

Least squares estimator of the stability parameter $\varrho := |α| + |β|$ for a spatial unilateral autoregressive process $X_{k,\ell}=αX_{k-1,\ell}+βX_{k,\ell-1}+\varepsilon_{k,\ell}$ is investigated. Asymptotic normality with a scaling factor $n^{5/4}$ is shown in the unstable case, i.e., when $\varrho = 1$, in contrast to the AR(p) model $X_k=α_1 X_{k-1}+... +α_p X_{k-p}+ \varepsilon_k$, where the least squares estimator of the stability parameter $\varrho :=α_1 + ... + α_p$ is not asymptotically normal in the unstable, i.e., in the unit root case.

Explicit formulas for Laplace transforms of certain functionals of some time inhomogeneous diffusions

We consider a process $(X_t)_{t\in[0,T)}$ given by the SDE $dX_t = αb(t)X_t dt + σ(t) dB_t$, $t\in[0,T)$, with initial condition $X_0=0$, where $T\in(0,\infty]$, $α\in R$, $(B_t)_{t\in[0,T)}$ is a standard Wiener process, $b:[0,T)\to R\setminus\{0\}$ and $σ:[0,T)\to(0,\infty)$ are continuously differentiable functions. Assuming that $b$ and $σ$ satisfy a certain differential equation we derive an explicit formula for the joint Laplace transform of $\int_0^t\frac{b(s)^2}{σ(s)^2}(X_s)^2 ds$ and $(X_t)^2$ for all $t\in[0,T)$. As an application, we study asymptotic behavior of the maximum likelihood estimator of $α$ for $\sign(α-K)=\sign(K)$, $K\ne0$, and for $α=K$, $K\ne0$. As an example, we examine the so-called $α$-Wiener bridges given by SDE $dX_t = -\fracα{T-t}X_t dt + dB_t$, $t\in[0,T)$, with initial condition $X_0=0$.

Parameter estimation in a spatial unit root autoregressive model

Spatial unilateral autoregressive model $X_{k,\ell}=αX_{k-1,\ell}+βX_{k,\ell-1}+γX_{k-1,\ell-1}+ε_{k,\ell}$ is investigated in the unit root case, that is when the parameters are on the boundary of the domain of stability that forms a tetrahedron with vertices $(1,1,-1), \ (1,-1,1),\ (-1,1,1)$ and $(-1,-1,-1)$. It is shown that the limiting distribution of the least squares estimator of the parameters is normal and the rate of convergence is $n$ when the parameters are in the faces or on the edges of the tetrahedron, while on the vertices the rate is $n^{3/2}$.

Asymptotic behavior of unstable INAR(p) processes

In this paper the asymptotic behavior of an unstable integer-valued autoregressive model of order p (INAR(p)) is described. Under a natural assumption it is proved that the sequence of appropriately scaled random step functions formed from an unstable INAR(p) process converges weakly towards a squared Bessel process. We note that this limit behavior is quite different from that of familiar unstable autoregressive processes of order p. An application for Boston armed robberies data set is presented.

Outliers in INAR(1) models

In this paper the integer-valued autoregressive model of order one, contaminated with additive or innovational outliers is studied in some detail. Moreover, parameter estimation is also addressed. Supposing that the time points of the outliers are known but their sizes are unknown, we prove that the Conditional Least Squares (CLS) estimators of the offspring and innovation means are strongly consistent. In contrast, however, the CLS estimators of the outliers' sizes are not strongly consistent, although they converge to a random limit with probability 1. This random limit depends on the values of the process at the outliers' time points and on the values at the preceding time points and in case of additive outliers also on the values at the following time points. We also prove that the joint CLS estimator of the offspring and innovation means is asymptotically normal. Conditionally on the above described values of the process, the joint CLS estimator of the sizes of the outliers is also asymptotically normal.

alpha-Wiener bridges: singularity of induced measures and sample path properties

Let us consider the process $(X_t^{(α)})_{t\in[0,T)}$ given by the SDE $dX_t^{(α)} = -\fracα{T-t}X_t^{(α)} dt+ dB_t$, $t\in[0,T)$, where $α\in R$, $T\in(0,\infty)$, and $(B_t)_{t\geq 0}$ is a standard Wiener process. In case of $α>0$ the process $X^{(α)}$ is known as an $α$-Wiener bridge, in case of $α=1$ as the usual Wiener bridge. We prove that for all $α,β\in R$, $α\neβ$, the probability measures induced by the processes $X^{(α)}$ and $X^{(β)}$ are singular on C[0,T). Further, we investigate regularity properties of $X_t^{(α)}$ as $t\uparrow T$.

Asymptotic behavior of maximum likelihood estimator for time inhomogeneous diffusion processes

We study asymptotic behavior of maximum likelihood estimator for a time inhomogeneous diffusion process given by a SDE $dX_t=αb(t)X_t dt + σ(t) dB_t$, $t\in[0,T)$, with a parameter $α\in R$, where $T\in(0,\infty]$ and $(B_t)_{t\in[0,T)}$ is a standard Wiener process. We formulate sufficient conditions under which the MLE of $α$ normalized by Fisher information converges to the limit distribution of Dickey-Fuller statistics. Next we study a SDE $dY_t=αb(t)a(Y_t) dt + σ(t) dB_t$, $t\in[0,T)$, with a perturbed drift satisfying $a(x)=x+O(1+|x|^γ)$ with some $γ\in[0,1)$. We give again sufficient conditions under which the MLE of $α$ normalized by Fisher information converges to the limit distribution of Dickey-Fuller statistics.

Limit theorems on locally compact Abelian groups

We prove limit theorems for row sums of a rowwise independent infinitesimal array of random variables with values in a locally compact Abelian group. First we give a proof of Gaiser's theorem, since it does not have an easy access and it is not complete. This theorem gives sufficient conditions for convergence of the row sums, but the limit measure can not have a nondegenerate idempotent factor. Then we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence of the row sums, where the limit measure can be also a nondegenerate Haar measure on a compact subgroup. Finally, we investigate special cases: the torus group, the group of p-adic integers and the p-adic solenoid.
