C∗C^*--algebras arising from group actions on the boundary of a triangle building

A subgroup of an amenable group is amenable. The C∗C^*-algebra version of this fact is false. This was first proved by M.-D. Choi who proved that the non-nuclear C∗C^*-algebra $C^*_r(\ZZ_2*\ZZ_3)$ is a subalgebra of the nuclear Cuntz algebra O2{\cal O}_2. A. Connes provided another example, based on a crossed product construction. More recently J. Spielberg [23] showed that these examples were essentially the same. In fact he proved that certain of the C∗C^*-algebras studied by J. Cuntz and W. Krieger [10] can be constructed naturally as crossed product algebras. For example if the group ΓΓ acts simply transitively on a homogeneous tree of finite degree with boundary ΩΩ then $\cross$ is a Cuntz-Krieger algebra. Such trees may be regarded as affine buildings of type A~1\widetilde A_1. The present paper is devoted to the study of the analogous situation where a group $\G$ acts simply transitively on the vertices of an affine building of type A~2\widetilde A_2 with boundary ØØ. The corresponding crossed product algebra $\cross$ is then generated by two Cuntz-Krieger algebras. Moreover we show that $\cross$ is simple and nuclear. This is a consequence of the facts that the action of $\G$ on ØØ is minimal, topologically free, and amenable.

A Haagerup Inequality for $\tA_1\times\tA_1$ and $\tA_2$ Buildings

Haagerup's inequality for convolvers on free groups may be interpreted as a result on $\tA_1$ buildings, i.e. trees. Here are proved analogous inequalities for discrete groups acting freely on the vertices of $\tA_1\times\tA_1$ and $\tA_2$ buildings. The results apply in particular to groups of type-rotating automorphisms acting simply transitively on the vertices of such buildings. These results provide the first examples of higher rank groups with property (RD).

Affine buildings, tiling systems and higher rank Cuntz-Krieger algebras

To an rr-dimensional subshift of finite type satisfying certain special properties we associate a C∗C^*-algebra $\cA$. This algebra is a higher rank version of a Cuntz-Krieger algebra. In particular, it is simple, purely infinite and nuclear. We study an example: if $\G$ is a group acting freely on the vertices of an $\wt A_2$ building, with finitely many orbits, and if ΩΩ is the boundary of that building, then $C(\Om)\rtimes \G$ is the algebra associated to a certain two dimensional subshift.

Boundary C∗C^*-algebras of triangle geometries

Let ΔΔ be a building of type A~2\widetilde A_2 and order qq, with maximal boundary ΩΩ. Let ΓΓ be a group of type preserving automorphisms of ΔΔ which acts regularly on the chambers of ΔΔ. Then the crossed product C∗C^*-algebra C(Ω)⋊ΓC(Ω) \rtimes Γ is isomorphic to $M_{3(q+1)} \otimes\cl O_{q^2}\otimes\cl O_{q^2}$, where $\cl O_n$ denotes the Cuntz algebra generated by nn isometries whose range projections sum to the identity operator.

Crofton formulae and geodesic distance in hyperbolic spaces

The geodesic distance between points in real hyperbolic space is a hypermetric, and hence is a kernel negative type. The proof given here uses an integral formula for geodesic distance, in terms of a measure on the space of hyperplanes. An analogous integral formula, involving the space of horospheres, is given for complex hyperbolic space.By contrast geodesic distance in a projective space is not of negative type.

Groups acting on products of trees, tiling systems and analytic K-theory

Let T1T_1 and T2T_2 be homogeneous trees of even degree ≥4\ge 4. A BM group ΓΓ is a torsion free discrete subgroup of $\aut (T_1) \times \aut (T_2)$ which acts freely and transitively on the vertex set of T1×T2T_1 \times T_2. This article studies dynamical systems associated with BM groups. A higher rank Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal A(\G)$ is associated both with a 2-dimensional tiling system and with a boundary action of a BM group ΓΓ. An explicit expression is given for the K-theory of $\mathcal A(\G)$. In particular K0=K1K_0=K_1. A complete enumeration of possible BM groups $\G$ is given for a product homogeneous trees of degree 4, and the K-groups are computed.

Irreducible subshifts associated with A~2\tilde A_2 buildings

Let ΓΓ be a group of type rotating automorphisms of a building $\cB$ of type A~2\widetilde A_2, and suppose that ΓΓ acts freely and transitively on the vertex set of $\cB$. The apartments of $\cB$ are tiled by triangles, labelled according to ΓΓ-orbits. Associated with these tilings there is a natural subshift of finite type, which is shown to be irreducible. The key element in the proof is a combinatorial result about finite projective planes.

Maximal abelian subalgebras of the group factor of an A~2\widetilde A_2 group

An A~2\widetilde A_2 group ΓΓ acts simply transitively on the vertices of an affine building △\triangle. We study certain subgroups Γ0≅Z2Γ_0 \cong {\Bbb Z}^2 which act on certain apartments of △\triangle. If one of these subgroups acts simply transitively on an apartment, then the corresponding subalgebra of the group von Neumann algebra is maximal abelian and singular. Moreover the Pukánszky invariant contains a type I∞I_{\infty} summand.

Strong singularity for subalgebras of finite factors

In this paper we develop the theory of strongly singular subalgebras of von Neumann algebras, begun in earlier work. We mainly examine the situation of type $\tto$ factors arising from countable discrete groups. We give simple criteria for strong singularity, and use them to construct strongly singular subalgebras. We particularly focus on groups which act on geometric objects, where the underlying geometry leads to strong singularity.

On the K-theory of boundary C∗C^*-algebras of A~2\widetilde A_2 groups

Let ΓΓ be an A~2\widetilde A_2 subgroup of $\PGL_3(\mathbb K)$, where K\mathbb K is a local field with residue field of order qq. The module of coinvariants C(PK2,Z)ΓC(\mathbb P^2_{\mathbb K},\mathbb Z)_Γ is shown to be finite, where PK2\mathbb P^2_{\mathbb K} is the projective plane over K\mathbb K. If the group ΓΓ is of Tits type and if q≢1(mod3)q \not\equiv 1 \pmod {3} then the exact value of the order of the class [I]K0[I]_{K_0} in the K-theory of the (full) crossed product C∗C^*-algebra C(Ω)⋊ΓC(Ω)\rtimesΓ is determined, where ΩΩ is the Furstenberg boundary of $\PGL_3(\mathbb K)$. For groups of Tits type, this verifies a conjecture of G. Robertson and T. Steger.

Invariant distributions on projective spaces over local fields

Let ΓΓ be an A~n\widetilde A_n subgroup of PGLn+1(K)PGL_{n+1}(K), with n≥2n\ge 2, where KK is a local field with residue field of order qq and let $\bb P^n_{K}$ be projective nn-space over KK. The module of coinvariants H0(Γ;C(PKn,Z))H_0(Γ; C(P^n_{K},Z)) is shown to be finite. Consequently there is no nonzero ΓΓ-invariant ZZ-valued distribution on PKnP^n_{K}.

Invariant boundary distributions for finite graphs

Let ΓΓ be the fundamental group of a finite connected graph G\mathcal G. Let M\mathfrak M be an abelian group. A {\it distribution} on the boundary ∂Δ\partialΔ of the universal covering tree ΔΔ is an M\mathfrak M-valued measure defined on clopen sets. If M\mathfrak M has no χ(G)χ(\mathcal G)-torsion then the group of ΓΓ-invariant distributions on ∂Δ\partialΔ is isomorphic to H1(G,M)H_1(\mathcal G,\mathfrak M).

Abelian subalgebras of von Neumann algebras from flat tori in locally symmetric spaces

Consider a compact locally symmetric space MM of rank rr, with fundamental group ΓΓ. The von Neumann algebra $\vn(Γ)$ is the convolution algebra of functions f∈ℓ2(Γ)f\in\ell_2(Γ) which act by left convolution on ℓ2(Γ)\ell_2(Γ). Let TrT^r be a totally geodesic flat torus of dimension rr in MM and let $Γ_0\cong\bb Z^r$ be the image of the fundamental group of TrT^r in ΓΓ. Then $\vn(Γ_0)$ is a maximal abelian ⋆\star-subalgebra of $\vn(Γ)$ and its unitary normalizer is as small as possible. If MM has constant negative curvature then the Pukánszky invariant of $\vn(Γ_0)$ is ∞\infty.

Tiling systems and homology of lattices in tree products

Let ΓΓ be a torsion free cocompact lattice in $\aut(\cl T_1)\times\aut(\cl T_2)$, where $\cl T_1$, $\cl T_2$ are trees whose vertices all have degree at least three. The group $H_2(Γ, \bb Z)$ is determined explicitly in terms of an associated 2-dimensional tiling system. It follows that under appropriate conditions the crossed product C∗C^*-algebra $\cl A$ associated with the action of ΓΓ on the boundary of $\cl T_1\times \cl T_2$ satisfies $\rank K_0(\cl A) = 2\cdot\rank H_2(Γ, \bb Z)$.

Torsion in Boundary Coinvariants and K-theory for Affine Buildings

Let (G,I,N,S)(G,{\mathfrak I},N,S) be an affine topological Tits system, and let ΓΓ be a torsion free cocompact lattice in GG. This article studies the coinvariants H0(Γ;C(Ω,Z))H_0(Γ; C(Ω,{\mathbb Z})), where ΩΩ is the Furstenberg boundary of GG. It is shown that the class [1][1] of the identity function in H0(Γ;C(Ω,Z))H_0(Γ; C(Ω,{\mathbb Z})) has finite order, with explicit bounds for the order. A similar statement applies to the K0K_0 group of the boundary crossed product C∗C^*-algebra C(Ω)⋊ΓC(Ω)\rtimesΓ. If the Tits system has type A~2\widetilde A_2, exact computations are given, both for the crossed product algebra and for the reduced group C∗C^*-algebra.

Boundary operator algebras for free uniform tree lattices

Let XX be a finite connected graph, each of whose vertices has degree at least three. The fundamental group ΓΓ of XX is a free group and acts on the universal covering tree ΔΔ and on its boundary ∂Δ\partial Δ, endowed with a natural topology and Borel measure. The crossed product C∗C^*-algebra C(∂Δ)⋊ΓC(\partial Δ) \rtimes Γ depends only on the rank of ΓΓ and is a Cuntz-Krieger algebra whose structure is explicitly determined. The crossed product von Neumann algebra does not possess this rigidity. If XX is homogeneous of degree q+1q+1 then the von Neumann algebra L∞(∂Δ)⋊ΓL^\infty(\partial Δ)\rtimes Γ is the hyperfinite factor of type IIIλIII_λ where λ=1/q2λ=1/{q^2} if XX is bipartite, and λ=1/qλ=1/{q} otherwise.

Asymptotic K-theory for groups acting on $\tildeA_2$ buildings

Let ΓΓ be a torsion free lattice in $G=\PGL(3,{\mathbb F})$ where F{\mathbb F} is a nonarchimedean local field. Then ΓΓ acts freely on the affine Bruhat-Tits building B{\mathcal B} of GG and there is an induced action on the boundary ΩΩ of B{\mathcal B}. The crossed product C∗C^*-algebra A(Γ)=C(Ω)⋊Γ{\mathcal A}(Γ)=C(Ω) \rtimes Γ depends only on ΓΓ and is classified by its K-theory. This article shows how to compute the K-theory of A(Γ){\mathcal A}(Γ) and of the larger class of rank two Cuntz-Krieger algebras.

preprint2000arXiv

Boundary actions for affine buildings and higher rank Cuntz-Krieger algebras

Let $\G$ be a group of type rotating automorphisms of an affine building $\cB$ of type $\wt A_2$. If $\G$ acts freely on the vertices of $\cB$ with finitely many orbits, and if ΩΩ is the (maximal) boundary of $\cB$, then $C(\Om)\rtimes \G$ is a p.i.s.u.n. C∗C^*-algebra. This algebra has a structure theory analogous to that of a simple Cuntz-Krieger algebra and is the motivation for a theory of higher rank Cuntz-Krieger algebras, which has been developed by T. Steger and G. Robertson. The K-theory of these algebras can be computed explicitly in the rank two case. For the rank two examples of the form $C(\Om)\rtimes \G$ which arise from boundary actions on $\wt A_2$ buildings, the two K-groups coincide.

preprint2000arXiv

Torsion in K-theory for boundary actions on affine buildings of type $\tA_n$

Let ΓΓ be a torsion free lattice in $G = \PGL(n+1,\FF)$, where n≥1n\ge 1 and $\FF$ is a non-archimedean local field. Then ΓΓ acts on the Furstenberg boundary G/PG/P, where PP is a minimal parabolic subgroup of GG. The identity element $\id$ in the crossed product C∗C^*-algebra C(G/P)⋊ΓC(G/P)\rtimes Γ generates a class $[\id]$ in the K0K_0 group of C(G/P)⋊ΓC(G/P)\rtimes Γ. It is shown that $[\id]$ is a torsion element of K0K_0 and there is an explicit bound for the order of $[\id]$. The result is proved more generally for groups acting on affine buildings of type $\tA_n$. For n=1,2n=1, 2 the Euler-Poincaré characteristic χ(Γ)χ(Γ) annihilates the class $[\id]$.
