Higher-Spin Theory - Part II: enter dimension three

These notes aim at providing a pedagogical and pedestrian introduction to the subject and assume no previous knowledge apart from that of general relativity. We shall first recall the "frame" formulation of the later theory, then particularize it to three dimensions, and will end those preliminaries by reviewing the formulation of three-dimensional gravity as a gauge theory governed by a Chern-Simons action. An analogous path is then followed for higher-spin fields at the free level. Once the equivalent Chern-Simons action is established thereof, it is then explained how one can formulate three-dimensional higher-spin theories at the non-linear level by considering higher-spin Lie algebras. We then move on to commenting on what has already been done in the context of these theories and what interesting areas of research are currently under investigation.

Aspects of Higher-Spin Theory with Fermions

The present thesis is divided into three parts. In Part I we address a problem within Higher-Spin Gauge Theory in dimension three: namely, that of computing the asymptotic symmetry algebra of supersymmetric models, describing an infinite spectrum of integer and half-integer higher-spin fields. In Part II we investigate higher-spin theories in dimension four or greater, where we classify the consistent cross interactions between free gauge fermions of arbitrary spin and a photon or a graviton. A third part supplements the bulk of the manuscript with technical appendices.

Super-W(infinity) Asymptotic Symmetry of Higher-Spin AdS(3) Supergravity

We consider (2+1)-dimensional (N, M)-extended higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity and study its asymptotic symmetries. The theory is described by the Chern-Simons action based on a real, infinite-dimensional higher-spin superalgebra. We specify consistent boundary conditions on the higher-spin super-gauge connection corresponding to asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We then determine the residual gauge transformations that preserve these asymptotic conditions and compute their Poisson bracket algebra. We find that the asymptotic symmetry is enhanced from the higher-spin superalgebra to some (N,M)-extended super-W(infinity) nonlinear superalgebra. The latter has the same classical central charge as pure Einstein gravity. Special attention is paid to the (1,1)-case. Truncation to the bosonic sector yields the previously found W(infinity) algebra, while truncation to the underlying finite-dimensional superalgebra reproduces the N-extended superconformal algebra (in its nonlinear version for N>2). We discuss string theory realization of these higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity theories as well as relations to previous treatments of super-W(infinity) in the literature.

Remarks on Gauge Invariance and First-Class Constraints

Gauge symmetries lead to first-class constraints. This assertion is of course true only for non trivial gauge symmetries, i.e., gauge symmetries that act non trivially on-shell on the dynamical variables. We illustrate this well-appreciated fact for time reparametrization invariance in the context of modifications of gravity -suggested in a recent proposal by Horava-in which the Hamiltonian constraint is deformed by arbitrary spatial diffeomorphism invariant terms, where some subtleties are found to arise.

A dynamical inconsistency of Horava gravity

The dynamical consistency of the non-projectable version of Horava gravity is investigated by focusing on the asymptotically flat case. It is argued that for generic solutions of the constraint equations the lapse must vanish asymptotically. We then consider particular values of the coupling constants for which the equations are tractable and in that case we prove that the lapse must vanish everywhere -- and not only at infinity. Put differently, the Hamiltonian constraints are generically all second-class. We then argue that the same feature holds for generic values of the couplings, thus revealing a physical inconsistency of the theory. In order to cure this pathology, one might want to introduce further constraints but the resulting theory would then lose much of the appeal of the original proposal by Horava. We also show that there is no contradiction with the time reparametrization invariance of the action, as this invariance is shown to be a so-called "trivial gauge symmetry" in Horava gravity, hence with no associated first-class constraints.
