Safe Gauge-String Correspondence

Safe theories are quantum field theories whose continuum limit is defined by a non-Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point when the ultraviolet cutoff is removed. They constitute an important set in the space of quantum field theories. Here we develop the `safe' gauge-string correspondence program according to which $d$-dimensional safe gauge theories, admitting the `t Hooft-Veneziano limit, are holographically dual to $(d+1)$-dimensional safe noncritical string theories on asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We provide evidences for this correspondence on a class of safe templates that engage fermion and scalar matter fields into gauge, Yukawa and Higgs self-interactions. Safe theories can feature in the infrared both a weak coupling phase and a strong coupling phase on either side of the ultraviolet fixed point. They correspond respectively to dilaton and warp factors taking domain-wall or Liouville-wall profiles on asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We argue that four-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theories and all known interacting (super)conformal field theories are nonperturbative limit situations of safe gauge theories. The weak coupling phase provides a solvable holographic renormalization group flow while the strong coupling infrared phase provides a runaway-free alternative to holographic QCD.

Finite Transformations in Doubled and Exceptional Space

In the double field theory, gauge symmetries are realized as generalized diffeomorphisms in the doubled spacetime. By consistency of the theory, dependence of tensor fields on the doubled coordinates is strongly constrained. This causes finite transformation law highly complicated, both technically and conceptually. In this paper, we propose a new, physically intuitive approach to finite gauge transformations by utilizing untwisted form of vector fields. In our approach, finite gauge transformation law is expressed in terms of diffeomorphisms on a maximal null subspace on which dynamical degrees of freedom live and of a local rotation of this null subspace embedded inside the doubled space. We show that our finite transformation automatically satisfies the composition law. We also show that ours is free from the so-called Papadopoulos problem, so can describe background with nontrivial three-form flux $H_3$. Added advantage of our approach is straightforward applicability to general extended field theories. We demonstrate this by explicitly obtaining finite transformation law in the SL(5) exceptional field theory.

Instanton-Monopole Correspondence from M-Branes on $\mathbb{S}^1$ and Little String Theory

We study BPS excitations in M5-M2-brane configurations with a compact transverse direction, which are also relevant for type IIa and IIb little string theories. These configurations are dual to a class of toric elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds $X_N$ with manifest $SL(2, \mathbb{Z}) \times SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ modular symmetry. They admit two dual gauge theory descriptions. For both, the non-perturbative partition function can be written as an expansion of the topological string partition function of $X_N$ with respect to either of the two modular parameters. We analyze the resulting BPS counting functions in detail and find that they can be fully constructed as linear combinations of the BPS counting functions of M5-M2-brane configurations with non-compact transverse directions. For certain M2-brane configurations, we also find that the free energies in the two dual theories agree with each other, which points to a new correspondence between instanton and monopole configurations. These results are also a manifestation of T-duality between type IIa and IIb little string theories.

Massless and Massive Higher Spins from Anti-de Sitter Space Waveguide

Higgs mechanism to massive higher-spin gauge fields is an outstanding open problem. We investigate this issue in the context of Kaluza-Klein compactification. Starting from a free massless higher-spin field in $(d+2)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space and compactifying over a finite angular wedge, we obtain an infinite tower of heavy, light and massless higher-spin fields in $(d+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. All massive higher-spin fields are described gauge invariantly in terms of Stüeckelberg fields. The spectrum depends on the boundary conditions imposed at both ends of the wedges. We obseved that higher-derivative boundary condition is inevitable for spin greater than three. For some higher-derivative boundary conditions, equivalently, spectrum-dependent boundary conditions, we get a non-unitary representation of partially-massless higher-spin fields of varying depth. We present intuitive picture which higher-derivative boundary conditions yield non-unitary system in terms of boundary action. We argue that isotropic Lifshitz interfaces in $O(N)$ Heisenberg magnet or $O(N)$ Gross-Neveu model provides the holographic dual conformal field theory and propose experimental test of (inverse) Higgs mechanism for massive and partially massless higher-spin fields.

New Supersymmetric Localizations from Topological Gravity

Supersymmetric field theories can be studied exactly on suitable off-shell supergravity backgrounds. We show that in two dimensions such backgrounds are identifiable with BRST invariant backgrounds of topological gravity coupled to an abelian topological gauge multiplet. This latter background is required for the consistent coupling of the topological `matter' YM theory to topological gravity. We make use of this topological point of view to obtain, in a simple and straightforward way, a complete classification of localizing supersymmetric backgrounds in two dimensions. The BRST invariant topological backgrounds are parametrized by both Killing vectors and $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of the 2-dimensional world-sheet. We reconstruct completely the supergravity backgrounds from the topological data: some of the supergravity fields are twisted versions of the topological backgrounds, but others are "composite", i.e. they are non-linear functionals of them. We recover all the known localizing 2-dimensional backgrounds and (infinitely) many more that have not been explored so far. We show that the supersymmetric $Ω$-deformation is nothing but the background value of the ghost-for-ghost of topological gravity, a result which holds for other dimensions too. The new localizing backgrounds are characterized by non-trivial fluxes for both the graviphotons of the supergravity multiplet.

Rainbow Vacua of Colored Higher Spin Gravity in Three Dimensions

We study the color-decoration of higher-spin (anti)-de Sitter gravity in three dimensions. We show that the rainbow vacua, which we found recently for the colored gravity theory, also pertain in the colored higher-spin theory. The color singlet spin-two plays the role of first fundamental form (metric). The difference is that when spontaneous breaking of color symmetry takes place, the Goldstone modes of massless spin-two combine with all other spins and become the maximal-depth partially massless fields of the highest spin in the theory, forming a Regge trajectory.

Rainbow Valley of Colored (Anti) de Sitter Gravity in Three Dimensions

We propose a theory of three-dimensional (anti) de Sitter gravity carrying Chan-Paton color charges. We define the theory by Chern-Simons formulation with the gauge algebra $(\mathfrak{gl}_{2}\oplus \mathfrak{gl}_{2})\otimes \mathfrak{u}(N)$, obtaining a color-decorated version of interacting spin-one and spin-two fields. We also describe the theory in metric formulation and show that, among $N^{2}$ massless spin-two fields, only the singlet one plays the role of metric graviton whereas the rest behave as \emph{colored spinning matter} that strongly interacts at large $N$. Remarkably, these \emph{colored spinning matter} acts as Higgs field and generates a non-trivial potential of staircase shape. At each extremum labelled by $k = 0, \ldots, [\frac{N-1}2]$, the $\mathfrak{u}(N)$ color gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken down to $\mathfrak{u}(N-k)\oplus \mathfrak{u}(k)$ and provides different (A)dS backgrounds with the cosmological constants $\big(\frac{N}{N-2k}\big)^{2}\,Ł$\,. When this symmetry breaking takes place, the spin-two Goldstone modes combine with (or are eaten by) the spin-one gauge fields to become partially-massless spin-two fields. We discuss various aspects of this theory and highlight physical implications.

Self-Duality and Self-Similarity of Little String Orbifolds

We study a class of ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ little string theories obtained from orbifolds of M-brane configurations. These are realised in two different ways that are dual to each other: either as $M$ parallel M5-branes probing a transverse $A_{N-1}$ singularity or $N$ M5-branes probing an $A_{M-1}$ singularity. These backgrounds can further be dualised into toric, non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds $X_{N,M}$ which have double elliptic fibrations and thus give a natural geometric description of T-duality of the little string theories. The little string partition functions are captured by the topological string partition function of $X_{N,M}$. We analyse in detail the free energies $Σ_{N,M}$ associated with the latter in a special region in the Kähler moduli space of $X_{N,M}$ and discover a remarkable property: in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili-limit, $Σ_{N,M}$ is identical to $NM$ times $Σ_{1,1}$. This entails that the BPS degeneracies for any $(N,M)$ can uniquely be reconstructed from the $(N,M)=(1,1)$ configuration, a property we refer to as self-similarity. Moreover, as $Σ_{1,1}$ is known to display a number of recursive structures, BPS degeneracies of little string configurations for arbitrary $(N,M)$ as well acquire additional symmetries. These symmetries suggest that in this special region the two little string theories described above are self-dual under T-duality.

$\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ Covariant Noether Currents and Global Charges in Double Field Theory

Double field theory is an approach for massless modes of string theory, unifying and geometrizing all gauge invariance in manifest $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ covariant manner. In this approach, we derive off-shell conserved Noether current and corresponding Noether potential associated with unified gauge invariance. We add Wald-type counter two-form to the Noether potential and define conserved global charges as surface integral. We check our $\mathbf{O}(D,D)$ covariant formula against various string backgrounds, both geometric and non-geometric. In all cases we examined, we find perfect agreements with previous results. Our formula facilitates to evaluate momenta along not only ordinary spacetime directions but also dual spacetime directions on equal footing. From this, we confirm recent assertion that null wave in doubled spacetime is the same as macroscopic fundamental string in ordinary spacetime.

M String, Monopole String and Modular Forms

We study relations between M-strings (one-dimensional intersections of M2-branes and M5-branes) in six dimensions and m-strings (magnetically charged monopole strings) in five dimensions. For specific configurations, we propose that the counting functions of BPS bound-states of M-strings capture the elliptic genus of the moduli space of m-strings. We check this proposal for the known cases, the Taub-NUT and Atiyah-Hitchin spaces for which we find complete agreement. Furthermore, we analyze the modular properties of the M-string free energies, which do not transform covariantly under SL(2,Z). However, for a given number of M-strings, we find that there exists a unique combination of unrefined genus-zero free energies that transforms as a Jacobi form under a congruence subgroup of SL(2,Z). These combinations correspond to summing over different numbers of M5-branes and make sense only if the distances between them are all equal. We explain that this is a necessary condition for the m-string moduli space to be factorizable into relative and center-of-mass parts.

Rigid Holography and Six-Dimensional N=(2,0) Theories on AdS_5 times S^1

Field theories on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space can be studied by realizing them as low-energy limits of AdS vacua of string/M theory. In an appropriate limit, the field theories decouple from the rest of string/M theory. Since these vacua are dual to conformal field theories (CFTs), this relates some of the observables of these field theories on AdS to a subsector of the dual CFTs. We exemplify this `rigid holography' by studying in detail the 6d N=(2,0) A_{K-1} superconformal field theory (SCFT) on AdS_5xS^1, with equal radii for AdS_5 and for S^1. We choose specific boundary conditions preserving sixteen supercharges that arise when this theory is embedded into Type IIB string theory on AdS_5xS^5/Z_K. On R^{4,1}xS^1, this 6d theory has a 5(K-1)-dimensional moduli space, with unbroken 5d SU(K) gauge symmetry at (and only at) the origin. On AdS_5xS^1, the theory has a 2(K-1)-dimensional `moduli space' of supersymmetric configurations. We argue that in this case the SU(K) gauge symmetry is unbroken everywhere in the `moduli space' and that this 5d gauge theory is coupled to a 4d theory on the boundary of AdS_5 whose coupling constants depend on the `moduli'. This involves non-standard boundary conditions for the gauge fields on AdS_5. Near the origin of the `moduli space', the theory on the boundary contains a weakly coupled 4d N=2 supersymmetric SU(K) gauge theory. We show that this implies large corrections to the metric on the `moduli space'. The embedding in string theory implies that the 6d N=(2,0) theory on AdS_5xS^1 with sources on the boundary is a subsector of the large N limit of various 4d N=2 quiver SCFTs that remains non-trivial in the large N limit. The same subsector appears universally in many different 4d N=2 SCFTs. We also discuss a decoupling limit that leads to N=(2,0) `little string theories' on AdS_5xS^1.

Antenna Operator Product Expansion of ABJ(M) Lightlike Polygon Wilson Loop

Expectation value of lightlike polygon Wilson loop is computed in the three-dimensional ABJM theory up to second-order in `t Hooft coupling in the limit of infinitely many colors and the result is critically compared with that in the four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We first obtain analytic result for hexagon Wilson loop by combining Mellin-Barnes transformation, high precision numerical computation and the PSLQ algorithm. We then derive a version of operator product expansion (OPE) that reduces lightlike n-gon to a linear combination of (n-2)-gons in the soft-collinear limit of the polygon geometry. The Wilson coefficient of the OPE is the universal antenna function defined by a collapsed lightlike tetragon Wilson loop. Using this, we first construct a all order recursion relation among the lightlike Wilson loops and then solve it for arbitrary polygon with the hexagon Wilson loop as the initial condition. The functional form of the polygon Wilson loop takes the structure remarkably similar to the four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We also observe that Gram subdeterminant conditions for polygon moduli variables restricts that the Wilson loop contour should be restricted even-sided. As a consistency check, we take thermodynamic limit of regular polygon and reproduce the known results for spacelike circular Wilson loop expectation value.

Conformal Bootstrap Approach to O(N) Fixed Points in Five Dimensions

Whether O(N)-invariant conformal field theory exists in five dimensions with its implication to higher-spin holography was much debated. We find an affirmative result on this question by utilizing conformal bootstrap approach. In solving for the crossing symmetry condition, we propose a new approach based on specification for the low-lying spectrum distribution. We find the traditional one-gap bootstrapping is not suited since the nontrivial fixed point expected from large-N expansion sits at deep interior (not at boundary or kink) of allowed solution region. We propose two-gap bootstrapping that specifies scaling dimension of two lowest scalar operators. The approach carves out vast region of lower scaling dimensions and universally features two tips. We find that the sought-for nontrivial fixed point now sits at one of the tips, while the Gaussian fixed point sits at the other tip. The scaling dimensions of scalar operators fit well with expectation based on large-N expansion. We also find indication that the fixed point persist for lower values of N all the way down to N=1. This suggests that interacting unitary conformal field theory exists in five dimensions for all nonzero N.

Lifshitz Holography with Isotropic Scale Invariance

Is it possible for an anisotropic Lifshitz critical point to actually exhibit isotropic conformal invariance? We answer this question in the affirmative by constructing a concrete holographic realization. We study three-dimensional spin-3 higher-spin gauge theory with a z=2 Lifshitz ground state with non-trivial spin-3 background. We provide consistent boundary conditions and determine the associated asymptotic symmetry algebra. Surprisingly, we find that the algebra consists of two copies of the W_3 extended conformal algebra, which is the extended conformal algebra of an isotropic critical system. Moreover, the central charges are given by 3l/(2G). We consider the possible geometric interpretation of the theory in light of the higher spin gauge invariance and remark on the implications of the asymptotic symmetry analysis.

Scanning Tunneling Macroscopy, Black Holes, and AdS/CFT Bulk Locality

We establish resolution bounds on reconstructing a bulk field from boundary data on a timelike hypersurface. If the bulk only supports propagating modes, reconstruction is complete. If the bulk also supports evanescent modes, local reconstruction is not achievable unless one has exponential precision in knowledge of the boundary data. Without exponential precision, for a Minkowski bulk, one can reconstruct a spatially coarse-grained bulk field, but only out to a depth set by the coarse-graining scale. For an asymptotically AdS bulk, reconstruction is limited to a spatial coarse-graining proper distance set by the AdS scale. AdS black holes admit evanescent modes. We study the resolution bound in the large AdS black hole background and provide a dual CFT interpretation. Our results demonstrate that, if there is a black hole of any size in the bulk, then sub-AdS bulk locality is no longer well-encoded in boundary data in terms of local CFT operators. Specifically, in order to probe the bulk on sub-AdS scales using only boundary data in terms of local operators, one must either have such data to exponential precision or make further assumptions about the bulk state.

Three-Dimensional Superconformal Field Theory on Conic Space as Hologram of Charged Topological Black Hole

We construct three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric conformal field theories on conic spaces. Built upon the fact that the partition function depends solely on the Reeb vector of the Killing vector, we propose that holographic dual of these theories are four-dimensional, supersymmetric charged topological black holes. With the supersymmetry localization technique, we study conserved supercharges, free energy, and Renyi entropy. At planar large N limit, we demonstrate perfect agreement between the superconformal field theories and the supersymmetric charged topological black holes.

Super-W(infinity) Asymptotic Symmetry of Higher-Spin AdS(3) Supergravity

We consider (2+1)-dimensional (N, M)-extended higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity and study its asymptotic symmetries. The theory is described by the Chern-Simons action based on a real, infinite-dimensional higher-spin superalgebra. We specify consistent boundary conditions on the higher-spin super-gauge connection corresponding to asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We then determine the residual gauge transformations that preserve these asymptotic conditions and compute their Poisson bracket algebra. We find that the asymptotic symmetry is enhanced from the higher-spin superalgebra to some (N,M)-extended super-W(infinity) nonlinear superalgebra. The latter has the same classical central charge as pure Einstein gravity. Special attention is paid to the (1,1)-case. Truncation to the bosonic sector yields the previously found W(infinity) algebra, while truncation to the underlying finite-dimensional superalgebra reproduces the N-extended superconformal algebra (in its nonlinear version for N>2). We discuss string theory realization of these higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity theories as well as relations to previous treatments of super-W(infinity) in the literature.

Baryon and Dark Matter Genesis from Strongly Coupled Strings

D3-brane probes of E-type Yukawa points lead to strongly coupled nearly conformal sectors nearby the Standard Model (visible sector) which are motivated by F-theory GUTs. Realistic visible sector brane configurations induce a seesaw mass hierarchy in the hidden sector with light GUT singlets charged under a strongly coupled hidden sector U(1). Interpreting these GUT singlets as dark matter, this leads to a matter genesis scenario where the freeze out and subsequent decay of heavy mediators between the two sectors simultaneously populates comparable amounts of baryon and dark matter asymmetry. Generating a net matter asymmetry requires a generational structure in the probe sector which is absent at weak string coupling, but is automatically realized at strong string coupling via towers of dyonic bound states corresponding to multi-prong string junctions. The hidden U(1) couples to the visible sector through both electric and magnetic kinetic mixing terms, providing an efficient means to deplete the symmetric component of dark matter. The mass of the dark matter is of order ~ 10 GeV. The dark matter mass and the matter asymmetry are both controlled by the scale of conformal symmetry breaking ~ 10^(9) - 10^(13) GeV, with the precise relation between the two set by details of the visible sector brane configuration.

Enhanced N=8 Supersymmetry of ABJM Theory on R(8) and R(8)/Z(2)

The ABJM theory refers to superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theory with product gauge group U(L)xU(R) and level +k, -k, respectively. The theory is a candidate for worldvolume dynamics of M2-branes sitting at C(4)/Z(k)k. By utilizing monopole operators, we prove that ABJM theory gets enhanced N=8 supersymmetry and SO(8) R-symmetry at Chern-Simons levels k=1,2. We first show that the ABJM Lagrangian can be written in a manifestly SO(8) invariant form up to certain extra terms. We then show that upon integrating out Chern-Simons gauge fields these extra terms vanish precisely at levels k=1,2. Utilizing monopole operators at these levels, we identify new N=2 supersymmetry. We demonstrate that they combine with the manifest N=6 supersymmetry to close on-shell on N=8 supersymmetry. We finally show that the ABJM scalar potential is SO(8) invariant.

Exact Results and Holography of Wilson Loops in N=2 Superconformal (Quiver) Gauge Theories

Using localization, matrix model and saddle-point techniques, we determine exact behavior of circular Wilson loop in N=2 superconformal (quiver) gauge theories. Focusing at planar and large `t Hooft couling limits, we compare its asymptotic behavior with well-known exponential growth of Wilson loop in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. For theory with gauge group SU(N) coupled to 2N fundamental hypermultiplets, we find that Wilson loop exhibits non-exponential growth -- at most, it can grow a power of `t Hooft coupling. For theory with gauge group SU(N) x SU(N) and bifundamental hypermultiplets, there are two Wilson loops associated with two gauge groups. We find Wilson loop in untwisted sector grows exponentially large as in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We then find Wilson loop in twisted sector exhibits non-analytic behavior with respect to difference of two `t Hooft coupling constants. By letting one gauge coupling constant hierarchically larger/smaller than the other, we show that Wilson loops in the second type theory interpolate to Wilson loop in the first type theory. We infer implications of these findings from holographic dual description in terms of minimal surface of dual string worldsheet. We suggest intuitive interpretation that in both type theories holographic dual background must involve string scale geometry even at planar and large `t Hooft coupling limit and that new results found in the gauge theory side are attributable to worldsheet instantons and infinite resummation therein. Our interpretation also indicate that holographic dual of these gauge theories is provided by certain non-critical string theories.

A Nonperturbative Proposal for Nonabelian Tensor Gauge Theory and Dynamical Quantum Yang-Baxter Maps

We propose a nonperturbative approach to nonabelian two-form gauge theory. We formulate the theory on a lattice in terms of plaquette as fundamental dynamical variable, and assign U(N) Chan-Paton colors at each boundary link. We show that, on hypercubic lattices, such colored plaquette variables constitute Yang-Baxter maps, where holonomy is characterized by certain dynamical deformation of quantum Yang-Baxter equations. Consistent dimensional reduction to Wilson's lattice gauge theory singles out unique compactness condition. We study a class of theories where the compactness condition is solved by Lax pair ansatz. We find that, in naive classical continuum limit, these theories recover Lorentz invariance but have degrees of freedom that scales as N^2 at large N. This implies that nontrivial quantum continuum limit must be sought for. We demonstrate that, after dimensional reduction, these theories are reduced to Wilson's lattice gauge theory. We also show that Wilson surfaces are well-defined physical observables without ordering ambiguity. Utilizing lattice strong coupling expansion, we compute partition function and correlation functions of the Wilson surfaces. We discover that, at large $N$ limit, the character expansion coefficients exhibit large-order behavior growing faster than exponential, in striking contrast to Wilson's lattice gauge theory. This hints a hidden, weakly coupled theory dual to the proposed tensor gauge theory. We finally discuss relevance of our study to topological quantum order in strongly correlated systems.

Composite Fermion Metals from Dyon Black Holes and S-Duality

We propose that string theory in the background of dyon black holes in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is holographic dual to conformally invariant composite Dirac fermion metal. By utilizing S-duality map, we show that thermodynamic and transport properties of the black hole match with those of composite fermion metal, exhibiting Fermi liquid-like. Built upon Dirac-Schwinger-Zwanziger quantization condition, we argue that turning on magnetic charges to electric black hole along the orbit of Gamma(2) subgroup of SL(2,Z) is equivalent to attaching even unit of statistical flux quanta to constituent fermions. Being at metallic point, the statistical magnetic flux is interlocked to the background magnetic field. We find supporting evidences for proposed holographic duality from study of internal energy of black hole and probe bulk fermion motion in black hole background. They show good agreement with ground-state energy of composite fermion metal in Thomas-Fermi approximation and cyclotron motion of a constituent or composite fermion excitation near Fermi-point.

Generalized Dynamical Spin Chain and 4-Loop Integrability in N=6 Superconformal Chern-Simons Theory

We revisit unitary representation of centrally extended (2 | 2) excitation superalgebra. We find most generally that `pseudo-momentum', not lattice momentum, diagonalizes spin chain Hamiltonian and leads to generalized dynamic spin chain. All known results point to lattice momentum diagonalization for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Having different interacting structure, we ask if N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory provides an example of pseudo-momentum diagonalization. For SO(6) sector, we study maximal shuffling and next-to-maximal shuffling terms in the dilatation operator and compare them with results expected from psu(2|2) superalgebbra and integrability. At two loops, we rederive maximal shuffling term (3-site) and find perfect agreement with known results. At four loops, we first find absence of next-to-maximal shuffling term (4-site), in agreement with prediction based on integrability. We next extract maximal shuffling term (5-site), the most relevant term for checking the possibility of pseudo-momentum diagonalization. Curiously, we find that result agrees with integraility prediction based on lattice momentum, as in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Consistency of our results is fully ensured by checks of renormalizability up to six loops.

Integrability of N=6 Chern-Simons Theory at Six Loops and Beyond

We study issues concerning perturbative integrability of N=6 Chern-Simons theory at planar and weak `t Hooft coupling regime. By Feynman diagrammatics, we derive so called maximal-ranged interactions in the quantum dilatation generator, originating from homogeneous and inhomogeneous diagrams. These diagrams require proper regularization of not only ultraviolet but also infrared divergences. We first consider standard operator mixing method. We show that homogeneous diagrams are obtainable by recursive method to all orders. The method, however, is not easily extendable to inhomogeneous diagrams. We thus consider two-point function method and study both operator contents and spectrum of the quantum dilatation generator up to six loop orders. We show that, of two possible classes of operators, only one linear combination actually contributes. Curiously, this is exactly the same combination as in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We then study spectrum of anomalous dimension up to six loops. We find that the spectrum agrees perfectly with the prediction based on quantum integrability. In evaluating the six loop diagrams, we utilized remarkable integer-relation algorithm (PSLQ) developed by Ferguson, Baily and Arno.

Nonlinear W(infinity) Algebra as Asymptotic Symmetry of Three-Dimensional Higher Spin Anti-de Sitter Gravity

We investigate the asymptotic symmetry algebra of (2+1)-dimensional higher spin, anti-de Sitter gravity. We use the formulation of the theory as a Chern-Simons gauge theory based on the higher spin algebra hs(1,1). Expanding the gauge connection around asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime, we specify consistent boundary conditions on the higher spin gauge fields. We then study residual gauge transformation, the corresponding surface terms and their Poisson bracket algebra. We find that the asymptotic symmetry algebra is a nonlinearly deformed W(infinity) algebra with classical central charges. We discuss implications of our results to quantum gravity and to various situations in string theory.

String Theory on Thin Semiconductors: Holographic Realization of Fermi Points and Surfaces

I make a novel contact between string theory and degenerate fermion dynamics in thin semiconductors. Utilizing AdS/CFT correspondence in string theory and tunability of coupling parameters in condensed matter systems, I focus on the possibilities testing string theory from tabletop experiments. I first discuss the observation that stability of Fermi surface is classifiable according to K-theory. I then elaborate two concrete realization of Fermi surfaces of zero and two dimensions. Both are realized by complex of D3-branes and D7-branes of relative codimension 6 and 4, respectively. The setup with Fermi point models gauge dynamics of multiply stacked graphenes at half-filling. I show that string theory predicts dynamical generation of mass gap and metal-insulator quantum phase transition at zero temperature. I emphasize that conformally invariant gauge theory dynamics of the setup plays a crucial role, leading to novel conformal phase transition. The setup with Fermi surface is in collaboration with Dongsu Bak and is based on charged black hole and models relativistic Fermi liquid. We find positive evidence for this identification from both equilibrium thermodynamics at or near zero temperature and out-of-equilibrium linear response and transport properties. I argue that fluctuation of black hole horizon provides holographic realization consistent with Fermi liquid for thermodynamics and interesting departures therefrom in transport properties.

Integrable Spin Chain of Superconformal U(M)xU(N) Chern-Simons Theory

N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory with gauge group U(M)xU(N)} is dual to N M2-branes and (M-N) fractional M2-branes, equivalently, discrete 3-form holonomy at C4/Zk orbifold singularity. We show that, much like its regular counterpart of M=N, the theory at planar limit have integrability structure in the conformal dimension spectrum of single trace operators. We first revisit the Yang-Baxter equation for a spin chain system associated with the single trace operators. We show that the integrability by itself does not preclude parity symmetry breaking. We construct two-parameter family of parity non-invariant, alternating spin chain Hamiltonian involving three-site interactions between 4 and 4* of SU(4). At weak `t Hooft coupling, we study the Chern-Simons theory perturbatively and calculate anomalous dimension of single trace operators up to two loops. The computation is essentially parallel to the regular case M=N. We find that resulting spin chain Hamiltonian matches with the Hamiltonian derived from Yang-Baxter equation, but to the one preserving parity symmetry. We give several intuitive explanations why the parity symmetry breaking is not detected in the Chern-Simons spin chain Hamiltonian at perturbative level. We suggest that open spin chain, associated with open string excitations on giant gravitons or dibaryons, can detect discrete flat holonomy and hence parity symmetry breaking through boundary field.

Can branes travel beyond CTC horizon in Godel Universe?

Godel universe in M-theory is a supersymmetric and homogeneous background with rotation and four-form magnetic flux. It is known that, as seen in inertial frame of co-moving observer, all geodesics with zero orbital angular momentum orbit inside `surface of light velocity' (CTC horizon). To learn if other probes can travel beyond the CTC horizon, we study dynamics of M-graviton and, in particular, M2-brane, whose motion is affected by Lorentz force exerted by the four-form magnetic flux and by nonzero orbital angular momentum. Classically, we find that both probes gyrate closed orbits, but diameter and center of gyration depends on sign and magnitude of probe's energy, charge and orbital angular momentum. For M2-brane, orbits in general travel outside the CTC horizon. Quantum-mechanically, we find that wave function and excitation energy levels are all self-similar. We draw analogy of probe's dynamics with Landau problem for charged particle in magnetic field.

Deformed Superspace, N=1/2 Supersymmetry and (Non)Renormalization Theorems

We consider a deformed superspace in which the coordinates θdo not anticommute, but satisfy a Clifford algebra. We present results on the properties of N=1/2 supersymmetric theories of chiral superfields in deformed superspace, taking the Wess-Zumino model as the prototype. We prove new (non)renormalization theorems: the F-term is radiatively corrected and becomes indistinguishable from the D-term, while the Fbar-term is not renormalized. Supersymmetric vacua are critical points of the antiholomorphic superpotential. The vacuum energy is zero to all orders in perturbation theory. We illustrate these results with several examples.

Non(anti)commutative Superspace, UV/IR Mixing & Open Wilson Lines

We study quantum aspects of field theories defined on N=1/2 superspace, where both bosonic and fermionic coordinates are made non(anti)commutative. We compute the one-loop effective superpotential, and we find that planar and nonplanar contributions exhibit markedly different behavior. Planar diagrams yield an effective superpotential proportional to N_c Φ\log Φ. For nonplanar diagrams, we show that ultraviolet-infrared mixing takes place and explain why some nonplanar diagrams are ultraviolet-divergent when bosonic noncommutativity is turned off. Each nonplanar diagram is not expressible as a star product of background fields, but, once resummed appropriately, they are expressed as a star product involving open Wilson lines in superspace. The open Wilson lines are responsible for ultraviolet-infrared mixing. We comment on an intriguing relation of our result to the Dijkgraaf-Vafa correspondence between gauge theories and matrix models.

Softer Hard Scattering and Noncommutative Gauge-String Duality

We study exclusive scattering of `hadrons' at high energy and fixed angle in (nonconformal) noncommutative gauge theories. Via gauge-string duality, we show that the noncommutativity renders the scattering soft, leading to exponential suppression. The result fits with the picture that, in noncommutative gauge theory, fundamental partons consist of extremely soft constituents and `hadrons' are made out of open Wilson lines.

Anatomy of One-Loop Effective Action in Noncommutative Scalar Field Theories

One-loop effective action of noncommutative scalar field theory with cubic self-interaction is studied. Utilizing worldline formulation, both planar and nonplanar part of the effective action are computed explicitly. We find complete agreement of the result with Seiberg-Witten limit of string worldsheet computation and standard Feynman diagrammatics. We prove that, at low-energy and large noncommutativity limit, nonplanar part of the effective action is simplified enormously and is resummable into a quadratic action of scalar open Wilson line operators.

Macroscopic strings as heavy quarks: Large-N gauge theory and anti-de Sitter supergravity

We study some aspects of Maldacena's large $N$ correspondence between N=4 superconformal gauge theory on D3-brane and maximal supergravity on AdS_5xS_5 by introducing macroscopic strings as heavy (anti)-quark probes. The macroscopic strings are semi-infinite Type IIB strings ending on D3-brane world-volume. We first study deformation and fluctuation of D3-brane when a macroscopic BPS string is attached. We find that both dynamics and boundary conditions agree with those for macroscopic string in anti-de Sitter supergravity. As by-product we clarify how Polchinski's Dirichlet / Neumann open string boundary conditions arise dynamically. We then study non-BPS macroscopic string anti-string pair configuration as physical realization of heavy quark Wilson loop. We obtain quark-antiquark static potential from the supergravity side and find that the potential exhibits nonanalyticity of square-root branch cut in `t Hooft coupling parameter. We put forward the nonanalyticity as prediction for large-N gauge theory at strong `t Hooft coupling limit. By turning on Ramond-Ramond zero-form potential, we also study theta-vacuum angle dependence of the static potential. We finally discuss possible dynamical realization of heavy N-prong string junction and of large-N loop equation via local electric field and string recoil thereof. Throughout comparisons of the AdS-CFT correspondence, we find crucial role played by `geometric duality' between UV and IR scales on directions perpendicular to D3-brane and parallel ones, explaining how AdS5 spacetime geometry emerges out of four-dimensional gauge theory at strong coupling.

Quantum Aspects of GMS Solutions of Noncommutative Field Theory and Large N Limit of Matrix Models

We investigate quantum aspects of Gopakumar-Minwalla-Strominger (GMS) solutions of noncommutative field theory (NCFT) at large noncommutativity limit, $θ\to \infty$. Building upon a quantitative map between operator formulation of 2-(respectively, (2+1))-dimensional NCFTs and large $N$ matrix models of $c=0$ (respectively, $c=1$) noncritical strings, we show that GMS solutions are quantum mechanically sensible only if we make appropriate joint scaling of $θ$ and $N$. For 't Hooft's planar scaling, GMS solutions are replaced by large $N$ saddle-point solutions. GMS solutions are recovered from saddle-point solutions at small 't Hooft coupling regime, but are destabilized at large 'tHooft coupling regime by quantum effects. We make comparisons between these large $N$ effects and recently studied infrared effects in NCFTs. We estimate U(N) symmetry breaking gradient effects and argue that they are suppressed only at small 't Hooft coupling regime.

Cosmic Holography

A new version of holographic principle for cosmology is proposed, which dictates that particle entropy within `cosmological apparent horizon' should not exceed gravitational entropy associated with the apparent horizon. It is shown that, in the Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology, the open Universe as well as a restricted class of flat cases are compatible with the principle, whereas closed Universe is not. It is also found that inflationary Universe after the big-bang is incompatible with the cosmic holography.

Holography Principle and Topology Change in String Theory

D-instantons of Type IIB string theory are Ramond-Ramond counterpart of Giddings-Strominger wormholes connecting two asymptotic regions of spacetime. Such wormholes, according to Coleman, might lead to spacetime topology change, third-quantized baby universes and probabilistic determination of fundamental coupling parameters. Utilizing correspondence between AdS5 x M5 Type IIB supergravity and d=4 super Yang-Mills theory, we point out that topology change and sum over topologies not only take place in string theory but also are required for consistency with holography. Nevertheless, the effects of D-instanton wormholes remain completely deterministic, in sharp contrast to Coleman's scenario.

Holographic Principle and String Cosmology

String cosmology is revisited from cosmological viewpoint of holographic principle put forward by `t Hooft, and by Fischler and Susskind. It is shown that the holography requires existence of a `graceful exit' mechanism, which renders the Universe nonsingular by connecting pre- and post-big bang phases smoothly. It is proven that flat Universe is consistent with the holography only if it starts with an absolutely cold and vacuous state. Particle entropy produced during the `graceful exit' apparently saturates the holography bound. Open Universe can always satisfy the holography no matter what initial state of the Universe is.

Non-Supersymmetric Stable Vacua of M-Theory

We discuss stability of non-supersymmetric compactification of M-theory and string theory of the form AdS * X, and their dual non-supersymmetric interacting conformal field theories. We argue some of the difficulties in controlling 1/N-corrections disappear in the cases that the large-N dual conformal field theory has no invariant marginal operators (and in some cases with no exactly marginal operators only). We provide several examples of such compactifications of M-theory down to AdS4.

Chiral Perturbation Theory for Tensor Mesons

Interactions of $a_2, K^*_2, f_2$ and $f_2'$ tensor-mesons with low-energy $π, K, η, η'$ pseudo-scalar mesons are constrained by chiral symmetry. We derive a chiral Lagrangian of tensor mesons in which the tensor mesons are treated as heavy non-relativistic matter fields. Using $1/N_c$ counting, we derive relations among unknown couplings of the chiral Lagrangian. Chiral perturbation theory is applied to the tensor-meson mass matrix. At one-loop there are large corrections to the individual tensor meson masses, but the singlet-octet mixing angle remains almost unchanged. We argue that all heavy mesons of spin $\ge 1$ share common feature of chiral dynamics.

Heterotic M(atrix) Strings and Their Interactions

Following recent proposal of Dijkgraaf, Verlinde and Verlinde, we show that the M(atrix) theory compactified on $S_1/Z_2$ provides with a non-perturbative description of second-quantized light-cone heterotic string. This so-called heterotic M(atrix) string theory is defined by two-dimensional (8,0) supersymmetric chiral gauge theory with gauge group SO(2N) in the large N limit. We argue that at strong coupling fixed point the chiral gauge theory flows to a (8,0) superconformal field theory defined via $S_N$ symmetric product space orbifold. We show that the leading order correction to the strong coupling expansion corresponds to a unique irrelevant operator of scaling dimension three and describes joining and splitting cubic interactions of light-cone heterotic string. We also speculate on M(atrix) description of bosonic strings via dimensional reduction of d=26 Yang-Mills theory.

$V_{ub}$ from the Hadron Energy Spectrum in Inclusive Semileptonic B Decays

A measurement of the hadron energy spectrum in inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays is proposed as a viable method for extracting $|V_{ub}|$. Compared to the traditional energy spectrum of the charged lepton, the hadron energy spectrum exhibits kinematical advantages such as a wider energy window and a larger signal branching fraction. It is emphasized that the hadron energy spectrum method is most suited for symmetric $B$ factories, such as CLEO. The hadron energy distribution is calculated in the approach of the Altarelli et al. model and of the heavy-quark effective field theory. In both methods, perturbative QCD corrections, the Fermi motion of the $b$-quark in the $B$-meson, and the recoil momentum of the $B$-meson (stemming from the $Υ(4S)$ resonance) are taken into account. We have found excellent agreement between the spectra calculated in both methods, especially in the relevant kinematical region below the charmed meson threshold. The theoretical error to $|V_{ub}|$, which is dominated by the uncertainty of the $b$-quark mass, is estimated to be at the $\pm 12 \%$ level.

Instanton Contribution to $B \rightarrow X_u e \bar ν$ Decay

We study instanton effects on inclusive semileptonic $b \rightarrow u$ decay using the heavy quark effective field theory and the operator product expansion. The effect contributes not only to the hadronic matrix element but also to the coefficient functions in the operator product expansion. We find that the coefficient function is singular near the boundaries of the phase space. In order to use perturbative QCD reliably, it is necessary to introduce smearing near the boundary. However the instanton contribution to $b \rightarrow c$ decay seems negligibly small.

3 Into 2 Doesn't Go: (almost) chiral gauge theory on the lattice

Kaplan recently proposed a novel lattice chiral gauge theory in which the bare theory is defined on $(2n+1)$-dimensions, but the continuum theory emerges in $2n$-dimensions. We explore whether the resulting theory reproduces all the features of continuum chiral gauge theory in the case of two-dimensional axial Schwinger model. We find that one can arrange for the two-dimensional perturbation expansion to be reproduced successfully. However, the theory fails to reproduce the 2-dimensional fermion nonconservation.

Semiclassical Gravity and Invisible Axions

We show that charged Eguchi-Hanson instantons provide a concrete and calculable new source of intrinsic Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking by quantum gravity. The size of this breaking is shown to depend sensitively on the short distance details of a given theory, but is generically suppressed by fermion zero modes. Demanding that these gravitational effects not affet the axion solution to the strong CP problem, we find that at least two sets of quarks with differing Peccei-Quinn charges are required. In addition, these effects obviate the cosmological axion domain wall problem but leave unchanged problems associated with coherent axion oscillations.

Spontaneous CP Violation at the Electroweak Scale

Utilizing results on the cosmology of anomalous discrete symmetries we show that models of spontaneous CP violation can in principle avoid the domain wall problem first pointed out by Zel'dovich, Kobzarev and Okun. A small but nonzero $θ_{QCD}$ explicitly breaks CP and can lift the degeneracy of the two CP conjugate vacua through nonperturbative effects so that the domain walls become unstable, but survive to cosmologically interesting epochs. We explore the viability of spontaneous CP violation in the context of two Higgs models, and find that the invisible axion solution of the strong CP problem cannot be implemented without further extensions of the Higgs sector.
