Multimodal Knowledge Alignment with Reinforcement Learning

Large language models readily adapt to novel settings, even without task-specific training data. Can their zero-shot capacity be extended to multimodal inputs? In this work, we propose ESPER which extends language-only zero-shot models to unseen multimodal tasks, like image and audio captioning. Our key novelty is to use reinforcement learning to align multimodal inputs to language model generations without direct supervision: for example, in the image case our reward optimization relies only on cosine similarity derived from CLIP, and thus requires no additional explicitly paired (image, caption) data. Because the parameters of the language model are left unchanged, the model maintains its capacity for zero-shot generalization. Experiments demonstrate that ESPER outperforms baselines and prior work on a variety of zero-shot tasks; these include a new benchmark we collect+release, ESP dataset, which tasks models with generating several diversely-styled captions for each image.

Realization of 5 h/e^2 with graphene quantum Hall resistance array

We report on realization of 10 quantum Hall devices in series fabricated using epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide. Precision measurements with a resistance bridge indicates that the quantized Hall resistance across an array at filling factor 2 is equivalent to 5 h/e^2 within the measurement uncertainty of approximately 4 10-8. A quantum-Hall phase diagram for the array shows that a metrological quantization of 5 h/e^2 can be achieved at the magnetic field of 6 T and temperature of 4 K. This experiment demonstrates the possibility of timely unchangeable resistance reference in various ranges in relaxed experimental conditions.

Broken-Symmetry Quantum Hall States in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene offers a unique bilayer two-dimensional-electron system where the layer separation is only in sub-nanometer scale. Unlike Bernal-stacked bilayer, the layer degree of freedom is disentangled from spin and valley, providing eight-fold degeneracy in the low energy states. We have investigated broken-symmetry quantum Hall (QH) states and their transitions due to the interplay of the relative strength of valley, spin and layer polarizations in twisted bilayer graphene. The energy gaps of the broken-symmetry QH states show an electron-hole asymmetric behaviour, and their dependence on the induced displacement field are opposite between even and odd filling factor states. These results strongly suggest that the QH states with broken valley and spin symmetries for individual layer become hybridized via interlayer tunnelling, and the hierarchy of the QH states is sensitive to both magnetic field and displacement field due to charge imbalance between layers.

Anomalous excitonic resonance Raman effects in few-layer MoS2

The resonance effects on the Raman spectra from 5 to 900 cm-1 of few-layer MoS2 thin films up to 14-layers were investigated by using six excitation energies. For the main first-order Raman peaks, the intensity maximum occurs at ~2.8 eV for single layer and at ~2.5 eV for few-layer MoS2, which correspond to the band-gap energy. At the excitation energy of 1.96 eV, several anomalous behaviors are observed. Many second-order peaks are anomalously enhanced even though the main first-order peaks are not enhanced. In the low-frequency region (<100 cm-1), a broad peak centered at ~38 cm-1 and its second order peak at 76 cm-1 appear for the excitation energy of 1.96 eV. These anomalous resonance effects are interpreted as being due to strong resonance with excitons or exciton-polaritons.

Super-W(infinity) Asymptotic Symmetry of Higher-Spin AdS(3) Supergravity

We consider (2+1)-dimensional (N, M)-extended higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity and study its asymptotic symmetries. The theory is described by the Chern-Simons action based on a real, infinite-dimensional higher-spin superalgebra. We specify consistent boundary conditions on the higher-spin super-gauge connection corresponding to asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We then determine the residual gauge transformations that preserve these asymptotic conditions and compute their Poisson bracket algebra. We find that the asymptotic symmetry is enhanced from the higher-spin superalgebra to some (N,M)-extended super-W(infinity) nonlinear superalgebra. The latter has the same classical central charge as pure Einstein gravity. Special attention is paid to the (1,1)-case. Truncation to the bosonic sector yields the previously found W(infinity) algebra, while truncation to the underlying finite-dimensional superalgebra reproduces the N-extended superconformal algebra (in its nonlinear version for N>2). We discuss string theory realization of these higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity theories as well as relations to previous treatments of super-W(infinity) in the literature.
