Palatini Gauss-Bonnet theory

We consider a class of models in even spacetime dimensions $2n$ which share many similarities with Chern-Simons theories in odd spacetime dimensions $2n+1$. The independent dynamical variables of these models are a $GL(2n)$-connection and a metric in internal space. The action is a polynomial of degree $n$ in the curvature of the connection, with indices saturated by means of the metric and the Levi-Civita tensor. We show that the theory has no local degree of freedom in $2$ spacetime dimensions ($n=1$), where it can be reformulated as a constrained $BF$ model, but that its dynamics is more intrincate in higher dimensions ($n>1$), where local degrees of freedom are present. We treat in detail the cases of $2$ and $4$ spacetime dimensions.}

Asymptotic structure of the gravitational field in five spacetime dimensions: Hamiltonian analysis

We develop the analysis of the asymptotic properties of gravity in higher spacetime dimensions $D$, with a particular emphasis on the case $D=5$. Our approach deals with spatial infinity and is Hamiltonian throughout. It is shown that the asymptotic symmetry algebra BMS$_5$, which is realized non linearly, contains a four-fold family of angle-dependent supertranslations. The structure of this non-linear algebra is investigated and a presentation in which the Poincaré subalgebra is linearly realized is constructed. Invariance of the energy is studied. Concluding comments on higher dimensions $D \geq 6$ are also given.

The final Kasner regime inside black holes with scalar or vector hair

The final (close to the singularity) dynamical behavior of the metric inside black holes with massive charged scalar or vector hair is analyzed for general anisotropic and inhomogeneous initial conditions. These solutions are relevant to a holographic realization of superconductivity. It is shown that the dynamics falls within the scope of the "cosmological billiard" description and that in both cases, the corresponding hyperbolic billiard region has infinite volume so that the system ultimately settles down to a final Kasner regime. For massive vector hair, the conclusion holds because the longitudinal mode plays the same role as a scalar field. There exists, however, a measure-zero subset of solutions characterized by vanishing longitudinal modes that exhibit a chaotic behavior with an infinite number of BKL oscillations as one goes to the singularity.

Asymptotic structure of the Rarita-Schwinger theory in four spacetime dimensions at spatial infinity

We investigate the asymptotic structure of the free Rarita-Schwinger theory in four spacetime dimensions at spatial infinity in the Hamiltonian formalism. We impose boundary conditions for the spin-3/2 field that are invariant under an infinite-dimensional (abelian) algebra of non-trivial asymptotic fermionic symmetries. The compatibility of this set of boundary conditions with the invariance of the theory under Lorentz boosts requires the introduction of boundary degrees of freedom in the Hamiltonian action, along the lines of electromagnetism. These boundary degrees of freedom modify the symplectic structure by a surface contribution appearing in addition to the standard bulk piece. The Poincaré transformations have then well-defined (integrable, finite) canonical generators. Moreover, improper fermionic gauge symmetries, which are also well-defined canonical transformations, are further enlarged and turn out to be parametrized by two independent angle-dependent spinor functions at infinity, which lead to an infinite-dimensional fermionic algebra endowed with a central charge. We extend next the analysis to the supersymmetric spin-$(1,3/2)$ and spin-$(2,3/2)$ multiplets. First, we present the canonical realization of the super-Poincaré algebra on the spin-$(1,3/2)$ multiplet, which is shown to be consistently enhanced by the infinite-dimensional abelian algebra of angle-dependent bosonic and fermionic improper gauge symmetries associated with the electromagnetic and the Rarita-Schwinger fields, respectively. A similar analysis of the spin-$(2,3/2)$ multiplet is then carried out to obtain the canonical realization of the super-Poincaré algebra, consistently enhanced by the abelian improper bosonic gauge transformations of the spin-$2$ field (BMS supertranslations) and the abelian improper fermionic gauge transformations of the spin-$3/2$ field.

The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group in five spacetime dimensions

We study asymptotically flat spacetimes in five spacetime dimensions by Hamiltonian methods, focusing on spatial infinity and keeping all asymptotically relevant nonlinearities in the transformation laws and in the charge-generators. Precise boundary conditions that lead to a consistent variational principle are given. We show that the algebra of asymptotic symmetries, which had not been uncovered before, is a nonlinear deformation of the semi-direct product of the Lorentz algebra by an abelian algebra involving four independent (and not just one) arbitrary functions of the angles on the $3$-sphere at infinity, with non trivial central charges. The nonlinearities occur in the Poisson brackets of the boost generators with themselves and with the other generators. They would be invisible in a linearized treatment of infinity.

A note on electric-magnetic duality and soft charges

We derive the asymptotic symmetries of the manifestly duality invariant formulation of electromagnetism in Minkoswki space. We show that the action is invariant under two algebras of angle-dependent $u(1)$ transformations, one electric and the other magnetic. As in the standard electric formulation, Lorentz invariance requires the addition of additional boundary degrees of freedom at infinity, found here to be of both electric and magnetic types. A notable feature of this duality symmetric formulation, which we comment upon, is that the on-shell values of the zero modes of the gauge generators are equal to only half of the electric and magnetic fluxes (the other half is brought in by Dirac-string type contributions). Another notable feature is the absence of central extension in the angle-dependent $u(1)^2$-algebra.

Asymptotic dynamics of AdS$_3$ gravity with two asymptotic regions

The asymptotic dynamics of AdS$_3$ gravity with two asymptotically anti-de Sitter regions is investigated, paying due attention to the zero modes, i.e., holonomies along non-contractible circles and their canonically conjugates. This situation covers the eternal black hole solution. We derive how the holonomies around the non-contractible circles couple the fields on the two different boundaries and show that their canonically conjugate variables, needed for a consistent dynamical description of the holonomies, can be related to Wilson lines joining the boundaries. The action reduces to the sum of four free chiral actions, one for each boundary and each chirality, with additional non-trivial couplings to the zero modes which are explicitly written. While the Gauss decomposition of the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ group elements is useful in order to treat hyperbolic holonomies, the Iwasawa decomposition turns out to be more convenient in order to deal with elliptic and parabolic holonomies. The connection with the geometric action is also made explicit. Although our paper deals with the specific example of two asymptotically anti-de Sitter regions, most of our global considerations on holonomies and radial Wilson lines qualitatively apply whenever there are multiple boundaries, independently of the form that the boundary conditions explicitly take there.

A note on the double dual graviton

The (free) graviton admits, in addition to the standard Pauli-Fierz description by means of a rank-two symmetric tensor, a description in which one dualizes the corresponding (2,2)-curvature tensor on one column to get a (D-2,2)-tensor, where D is the spacetime dimension. This tensor derives from a gauge field with mixed Yound symmetry (D-3,1) called the "dual graviton" field. The dual graviton field is related non-locally to the Pauli-Fierz field (even on-shell), in much the same way as a p-form potential and its dual (D-p-2)-form potential are related in the theory of an abelian p-form. Since the Pauli-Fierz field has a Young tableau with two columns (of one box each), one can contemplate a double dual description in which one dualizes on both columns and not just on one. The double dual curvature is now a (D-2,D-2)-tensor and derives from a gauge field with (D-3, D-3) mixed Young symmetry, the "double dual graviton" field. We show, however, that the double dual graviton field is algebraically and locally related to the original Pauli-Fierz field and, so, does not provide a truly new description of the graviton. From this point of view, it plays a very different role from the dual graviton field obtained through a single dualization. We also show that these equations can be obtained from a variational principle in which the variables to be varied in the action are (all) the components of the double-dual field as well as an auxiliary field with (2,1) Young symmetry. By gauge fixing the shift symmetries of this action principle, one recovers the Pauli-Fierz action. Our approach differs from the interesting approach based on parent actions and covers only the free, sourceless theory. Similar results are argued to hold for higher spin gauge fields.

Higher Spin Conformal Geometry in Three Dimensions and Prepotentials for Higher Spin Gauge Fields

We study systematically the conformal geometry of higher spin bosonic gauge fields in three spacetime dimensions. We recall the definition of the Cotton tensor for higher spins and establish a number of its properties that turn out to be key in solving in terms of prepotentials the constraint equations of the Hamiltonian (3 + 1) formulation of four-dimensional higher spin gauge fields. The prepotentials are shown to exhibit higher spin conformal symmetry. Just as for spins 1 and 2, they provide a remarkably simple, manifestly duality invariant formulation of the theory. While the higher spin conformal geometry is developed for arbitrary bosonic spin, we explicitly perform the Hamiltonian analysis and derive the solution of the constraints only in the illustrative case of spin 3. In a separate publication, the Hamiltonian analysis in terms of prepotentials is extended to all bosonic higher spins using the conformal tools of this paper, and the same emergence of higher spin conformal symmetry is confirmed.

Higher-spin charges in Hamiltonian form. I. Bose fields

We study asymptotic charges for symmetric massless higher-spin fields on Anti de Sitter backgrounds of arbitrary dimension within the canonical formalism. We first analyse in detail the spin-3 example: we cast Fronsdal's action in Hamiltonian form, we derive the charges and we propose boundary conditions on the canonical variables that secure their finiteness. We then extend the computation of charges and the characterisation of boundary conditions to arbitrary spin.

Asymptotic symmetries of three-dimensional higher-spin gravity: the metric approach

The asymptotic structure of three-dimensional higher-spin anti-de Sitter gravity is analyzed in the metric approach, in which the fields are described by completely symmetric tensors and the dynamics is determined by the standard Einstein-Fronsdal action improved by higher order terms that secure gauge invariance. Precise boundary conditions are given on the fields. The asymptotic symmetries are computed and shown to form a non-linear W-algebra, in complete agreement with what was found in the Chern-Simons formulation. The W-symmetry generators are two-dimensional traceless and divergenceless rank-s symmetric tensor densities of weight s (s = 2, 3, ...), while asymptotic symmetries emerge at infinity through the conformal Killing vector and conformal Killing tensor equations on the two-dimensional boundary, the solution space of which is infinite-dimensional. For definiteness, only the spin 3 and spin 4 cases are considered, but these illustrate the features of the general case: emergence of the W-extended conformal structure, importance of the improvement terms in the action that maintain gauge invariance, necessity of the higher spin gauge transformations of the metric, role of field redefinitions.

Enhancement of hidden symmetries and Chern-Simons couplings

We study the role of Chern--Simons couplings for the appearance of enhanced symmetries of Cremmer--Julia type in various theories. It is shown explicitly that for generic values of the Chern--Simons coupling there is only a parabolic Lie subgroup of symmetries after reduction to three space-time dimensions but that this parabolic Lie group gets enhanced to the full and larger Cremmer--Julia Lie group of hidden symmetries if the coupling takes a specific value. This is heralded by an enhanced isotropy group of the metric on the scalar manifold. Examples of this phenomenon are discussed as well as the relation to supersymmetry. Our results are also connected with rigidity theorems of Borel-like algebras.

Extended anti-de Sitter Hypergravity in $2+1$ Dimensions and Hypersymmetry Bounds

In a recent paper (JHEP {\bf 1508} (2015) 021), we have investigated hypersymmetry bounds in the context of simple anti-de Sitter hypergravity in $2+1$ dimensions. We showed that these bounds involved non linearly the spin-$2$ and spin-$4$ charges, and were saturated by a class of extremal black holes, which are $\frac14$-hypersymmetric. We continue the analysis here by considering $(M,N)$-extended anti-de Sitter hypergravity models, based on the superalgebra $osp(M \vert 4) \oplus osp(N \vert 4)$. The asymptotic symmetry superalgebra is then the direct sum of two-copies of a $W$-superalgebra that contains $so(M)$ (or $so(N)$) Kac-Moody currents of conformal weight $1$, fermionic generators of conformal weight $5/2$ and bosonic generators of conformal weight $4$ in addition to the Virasoro generators. The nonlinear hypersymmetry bounds on the conserved charges are derived and shown to be saturated by a class of extreme hypersymmetric black holes which we explicitly construct.

Hypersymmetry bounds and three-dimensional higher-spin black holes

We investigate the hypersymmetry bounds on the higher spin black hole parameters that follow from the asymptotic symmetry superalgebra in higher-spin anti-de Sitter gravity in three spacetime dimensions. We consider anti-de Sitter hypergravity for which the analysis is most transparent. This is a $osp(1\vert 4) \oplus osp(1\vert 4)$ Chern-Simons theory which contains, besides a spin-$2$ field, a spin-$4$ field and a spin-$5/2$ field. The asymptotic symmetry superalgebra is then the direct sum of two-copies of the hypersymmetric extension $W_{(2,\frac52,4)}$ of $W_{(2,4)}$, which contains fermionic generators of conformal weight $5/2$ and bosonic generators of conformal weight $4$ in addition to the Virasoro generators. Following standard methods, we derive bounds on the conserved charges from the anticommutator of the hypersymmetry generators. The hypersymmetry bounds are nonlinear and are saturated by the hypersymmetric black holes, which turn out to possess $1/4$-hypersymmetry and to be "extreme", where extremality can be defined in terms of the entropy: extreme black holes are those that fulfill the extremality bounds beyond which the entropy ceases to be a real function of the black hole parameters. We also extend the analysis to other $sp(4)$-solitonic solutions which are maximally (hyper)symmetric.

Kac-Moody and Borcherds Symmetries of Six-Dimensional Chiral Supergravity

We investigate the conjectured infinite-dimensional hidden symmetries of six-dimensional chiral supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets and two tensor multiplets, which is known to possess the $F_{4,4}$ symmetry upon dimensional reduction to three spacetime dimensions. Two things are done. (i) First, we analyze the geodesic equations on the coset space $F_{4,4}^{++}/K(F_{4,4}^{++})$ using the level decomposition associated with the subalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(5)\oplus \mathfrak{sl}(2)$ of $F_{4,4}^{++}$ and show their equivalence with the bosonic equations of motion of six-dimensional chiral supergravity up to the level where the dual graviton appears. In particular, the self-duality condition on the chiral $2$-form is automatically implemented in the sense that no dual potential appears for that $2$-form, in contradistinction with what occurs for the non chiral $p$-forms. (ii) Second, we describe the $p$-form hierarchy of the model in terms of its $V$-duality Borcherds superalgebra, of which we compute the Cartan matrix.

Can (Electric-Magnetic) Duality Be Gauged?

There exists a formulation of the Maxwell theory in terms of two vector potentials, one electric and one magnetic. The action is then manifestly invariant under electric-magnetic duality transformations, which are rotations in the two-dimensional internal space of the two potentials, and local. We ask the question: can duality be gauged? The only known and battled-tested method of accomplishing the gauging is the Noether procedure. In its decanted form, it amounts to turn on the coupling by deforming the abelian gauge group of the free theory, out of whose curvatures the action is built, into a non-abelian group which becomes the gauge group of the resulting theory. In this article, we show that the method cannot be successfully implemented for electric-magnetic duality. We thus conclude that, unless a radically new idea is introduced, electric-magnetic duality cannot be gauged. The implication of this result for supergravity is briefly discussed.

Chemical potentials in three-dimensional higher spin anti-de Sitter gravity

We indicate how to introduce chemical potentials for higher spin charges in higher spin anti-de Sitter gravity in a manner that manifestly preserves the original asymptotic W-symmetry. This is done by switching on a non-vanishing component of the connection along the temporal (thermal) circles. We first recall the procedure in the pure gravity case (no higher spin) where the only "chemical potentials" are the temperature and the chemical potential associated with the angular momentum. We then generalize to the higher spin case. We find that there is no tension with the W(N) or W(infinity) asymptotic algebra, which is obviously unchanged by the introduction of the chemical potentials. Our argument is non-perturbative.

Generalized Black Holes in Three-dimensional Spacetime

Three-dimensional spacetime with a negative cosmological constant has proven to be a remarkably fertile ground for the study of gravity and higher spin fields. The theory is topological and, since there are no propagating field degrees of freedom, the asymptotic symmetries become all the more crucial. For pure (2+1) gravity they consist of two copies of the Virasoro algebra. There exists a black hole which may be endowed with all the corresponding charges. The pure (2+1) gravity theory may be reformulated in terms of two Chern-Simons connections for sl(2,R). An immediate generalization containing gravity and a finite number of higher spin fields may be achieved by replacing sl(2,R) by sl(3,R) or, more generally, by sl(N,R). The asymptotic symmetries are then two copies of the so-called W_N algebra, which contains the Virasoro algebra as a subalgebra. The question then arises as to whether there exists a generalization of the standard pure gravity (2+1) black hole which would be endowed with all the W_N charges. The original pioneering proposal of a black hole along this line for N=3 turns out, as shown in this paper, to actually belong to the so called "diagonal embedding" of sl(2,R) in sl(3,R), and it is therefore endowed with charges of lower rather than higher spins. In contradistinction, we exhibit herein the most general black hole which belongs to the "principal embedding". It is endowed with higher spin charges, and possesses two copies of W_3 as its asymptotic symmetries. The most general diagonal embedding black hole is studied in detail as well, in a way in which its lower spin charges are clearly displayed. The extension to N>3 is also discussed. A general formula for the entropy of a generalized black hole is obtained in terms of the on-shell holonomies.

Gravitational Interactions of Higher-Spin Fermions

We investigate the cubic interactions of a massless higher-spin fermion with gravity in flat space and present covariant 2-s-s vertices, compatible with the gauge symmetries of the system, preserving parity. This explicit construction relies on the BRST deformation scheme that assumes locality and Poincare invariance. Consistent nontrivial cubic deformations exclude minimal gravitational coupling and may appear only with a number of derivatives constrained in a given range. Derived in an independent manner, our results do agree with those obtained from the light-cone formulation or inspired by string theory. We also show that none of the Abelian vertices deform the gauge transformations, while all the non-Abelian ones are obstructed in a local theory beyond the cubic order.

Sp(2n,R) electric-magnetic duality as off-shell symmetry of interacting electromagnetic and scalar fields

It was established long ago that SO(2) electric-magnetic duality is an {\em off-shell} symmetry of the free Maxwell theory, i.e., that it leaves invariant the action and not just the equations of motion. We review here that analysis and extend it to the Maxwell field coupled to scalar fields defined on the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})/SO(2)$ coset space, showing that $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ is in that case an {\em off-shell} symmetry. We also show how the result can be generalized to many Maxwell fields and $Sp(2n, \mathbb{R})$ duality symmetry - or a subgroup of it, recovering in particular the case of maximal supergravity in four dimensions with $E_{7,7}$ symmetry. We finally indicate further possible extensions to twisted self-duality equations for $p$-forms, including Chern-Simons terms and Pauli couplings, as well as linearized gravity, which will be treated in depth elsewhere.

Supersymmetric electric-magnetic duality of hypergravity

Hypergravity is the theory in which the graviton, of spin-2, has a supersymmetric partner of spin-5/2. There are "no-go" theorems that prevent interactions in these higher spin theories. However, it appears that one can circumvent them by bringing in an infinite tower of higher spin fields. With this possibility in mind, we study herein the electric-magnetic duality invariance of hypergravity. The analysis is carried out in detail for the free theory of the spin-(2,5/2) multiplet, and it is indicated how it may be extended to the infinite tower of higher spins. Interactions are not considered. The procedure is the same that was employed recently for the spin-(3/2,2) multiplet of supergravity. One introduces new potentials ("prepotentials") by solving the constraints of the Hamiltonian formulation. In terms of the prepotentials, the action is written in a form in which its electric-magnetic duality invariance is manifest. The prepotential action is local, but the spacetime invariance is not manifest. Just as for the spin-2 and spin-(3/2,2) cases, the gauge symmetries of the prepotential action take a form similar to those of the free conformal theory of the same multiplet. The automatic emergence of gauge conformal invariance out of demand of manifest duality invariance, is yet another evidence of the subtle interplay between duality invariance and spacetime symmetry. We also compare and contrast the formulation with that of the analogous spin-(1,3/2) multiplet.

Duality-invariant bimetric formulation of linearized gravity

A formulation of linearized gravity which is manifestly invariant under electric-magnetic duality rotations in the internal space of the metric and its dual, and which contains both metrics as basic variables (rather than the corresponding prepotentials), is derived. In this bimetric formulation, the variables have a more immediate geometrical significance, but the action is non-local in space, contrary to what occurs in the prepotential formulation. More specifically, one finds that: (i) the kinetic term is non-local in space (but local in time); (ii) the Hamiltonian is local in space and in time; (iii) the variables are subject to two Hamiltonian constraints, one for each metric.

Note on Gauge Invariance and Causal Propagation

Interactions of gauge-invariant systems are severely constrained by several consistency requirements. One is the preservation of the number of gauge symmetries, another is causal propagation. For lower-spin fields, the emphasis is usually put on gauge invariance that happens to be very selective by itself. We demonstrate with an explicit example, however, that gauge invariance, albeit indispensable for constructing interactions, may not suffice as a consistency condition. The chosen example that exhibits this feature is the theory of a massless spin-3/2 field coupled to electromagnetism. We show that this system admits an electromagnetic background in which the spin-3/2 gauge field may move faster than light. Requiring causal propagation rules out otherwise allowed gauge-invariant couplings. This emphasizes the importance of causality analysis as an independent test for a system of interacting gauge fields. We comment on the implications of allowing new degrees of freedom and non-locality in a theory, on higher-derivative gravity and Vasiliev's higher-spin theories.

Sources for Generalized Gauge Fields

Generalized gauge fields are tensor fields with mixed symmetries. For gravity and higher spins in dimensions greater than four, the fundamental field in the "magnetic representation" is a generalized gauge field. It is shown that the analog of a point source for a generalized gauge field is a special type of brane whose worldsheet has another brane interwoven into it: a current within a current. In the case of gravity in higher dimensions, this combined extended object is the generalization of a magnetic pole. The Dirac quantization condition for the "electric" and "magnetic" strengths holds.

Twisted Self-Duality for Linearized Gravity in D dimensions

The linearized Einstein equations in D spacetime dimensions can be written as twisted self-duality equations expressing that the linearized curvature tensor of the graviton described by a rank-two symmetric tensor, is dual to the linearized curvature tensor of the "dual graviton" described by a tensor of (D-3,1) Young symmetry type. In the case of 4 dimensions, both the graviton and its dual are rank-two symmetric tensors (Young symmetry type (1,1)), while in the case of 11 space-time dimensions relevant to M-theory, the dual graviton is described by a tensor of (8,1) Young symmetry type. We provide in this paper an action principle that yields the twisted self-duality conditions as equations of motion, keeping the graviton and its dual on equal footing. In order to construct a local, quadratic, variational principle for the twisted linear self-duality equations, it is necessary to introduce two "prepotentials". These are also tensors of mixed Young symmetry types and are obtained by solving the Hamiltonian constraints of the Hamiltonian formulation either of the Pauli-Fierz action for the graviton or of the Curtright action for its dual, the resulting actions being identical. The prepotentials enjoy interesting gauge invariance symmetries, which are exhibited and generalize the gauge symmetries found in D=4. A variational principle where the basic variables are the original Pauli-Fierz field and its dual can also be given but contrary to the prepotential action, the corresponding action is non-local in space -- while remaining local in time. We also analyze in detail the Hamiltonian structure of the theory and show that the graviton and its dual are canonically conjugate in a sense made precise in the text.

$E_{11}$, Borcherds algebras and maximal supergravity

The dynamical $p$-forms of torus reductions of maximal supergravity theory have been shown some time ago to possess remarkable algebraic structures. The set ("dynamical spectrum") of propagating $p$-forms has been described as a (truncation of a) real Borcherds superalgebra $\mf{V}_D$ that is characterized concisely by a Cartan matrix which has been constructed explicitly for each spacetime dimension $11 \geq D \geq 3.$ In the equations of motion, each differential form of degree $p$ is the coefficient of a (super-) group generator, which is itself of degree $p$ for a specific gradation (the $\mf{V}$-gradation). A slightly milder truncation of the Borcherds superalgebra enables one to predict also the "spectrum" of the non-dynamical $(D - 1)$ and $D$-forms. The maximal supergravity $p$-form spectra were reanalyzed more recently by truncation of the field spectrum of $E_{11}$ to the $p$-forms that are relevant after reduction from 11 to $D$ dimensions. We show in this paper how the Borcherds description can be systematically derived from the split ("maximally non compact") real form of $E_{11}$ for $D \geq 1.$ This explains not only why both structures lead to the same propagating $p$-forms and their duals for $p\leq (D - 2),$ but also why one obtains the same $(D - 1)$-forms and "top" $D$-forms. The Borcherds symmetries $\mf{V}_2$ and $\mf{V}_1$ are new too. We also introduce and use the concept of a presentation of a Lie algebra that is covariant under a given subalgebra.

Duality invariance implies Poincare invariance

We consider all possible dynamical theories which evolve two transverse vector fields out of a three-dimensional Euclidean hyperplane, subject to only two assumptions: (i) the evolution is local in space, and (ii) the theory is invariant under "duality rotations" of the vector fields into one another. The commutators of the Hamiltonian and momentum densities are shown to be necessarily those of the Poincare group or its zero signature contraction. Space-time structure thus emerges out of the principle of duality.

Gravitational Electric-Magnetic Duality, Gauge Invariance and Twisted Self-Duality

The concept of electric-magnetic duality can be extended to linearized gravity. It has indeed been established that in four dimensions, the Pauli-Fierz action (quadratic part of the Einstein-Hilbert action) can be cast in a form that is manifestly invariant under duality rotations in the internal 2-plane of the spacetime curvature and its dual. In order to achieve this manifestly duality-invariant form, it is necessary to introduce two "prepotentials", which form a duality multiplet. These prepotentials enjoy interesting gauge invariance symmetries, which are, for each, linearized diffeomorphisms and linearized Weyl rescalings. The purpose of this note is twofold: (i) To rewrite the manifestly-duality invariant action obtained in previous work in a way that makes its gauge invariances also manifest. (ii) To explicitly show that the equations of motion derived from that action can be interpreted as twisted self-duality conditions on the curvature tensors of the two metrics obtained from the two prepotentials.

Higher-Spin Fermionic Gauge Fields and Their Electromagnetic Coupling

We study the electromagnetic coupling of massless higher-spin fermions in flat space. Under the assumptions of locality and Poincare invariance, we employ the BRST-BV cohomological methods to construct consistent parity-preserving off-shell cubic 1-s-s vertices. Consistency and non-triviality of the deformations not only rule out minimal coupling, but also restrict the possible number of derivatives. Our findings are in complete agreement with, but derived in a manner independent from, the light-cone-formulation results of Metsaev and the string-theory-inspired results of Sagnotti-Taronna. We prove that any gauge-algebra-preserving vertex cannot deform the gauge transformations. We also show that in a local theory, without additional dynamical higher-spin gauge fields, the non-abelian vertices are eliminated by the lack of consistent second-order deformations.

Real forms of extended Kac-Moody symmetries and higher spin gauge theories

We consider the relation between higher spin gauge fields and real Kac-Moody Lie algebras. These algebras are obtained by double and triple extensions of real forms g_0 of the finite-dimensional simple algebras g arising in dimensional reductions of gravity and supergravity theories. Besides providing an exhaustive list of all such algebras, together with their associated involutions and restricted root diagrams, we are able to prove general properties of their spectrum of generators with respect to a decomposition of the triple extension of g_0 under its gravity subalgebra gl(D,R). These results are then combined with known consistent models of higher spin gauge theory to prove that all but finitely many generators correspond to non-propagating fields and there are no higher spin fields contained in the Kac-Moody algebra.

Super-W(infinity) Asymptotic Symmetry of Higher-Spin AdS(3) Supergravity

We consider (2+1)-dimensional (N, M)-extended higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity and study its asymptotic symmetries. The theory is described by the Chern-Simons action based on a real, infinite-dimensional higher-spin superalgebra. We specify consistent boundary conditions on the higher-spin super-gauge connection corresponding to asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We then determine the residual gauge transformations that preserve these asymptotic conditions and compute their Poisson bracket algebra. We find that the asymptotic symmetry is enhanced from the higher-spin superalgebra to some (N,M)-extended super-W(infinity) nonlinear superalgebra. The latter has the same classical central charge as pure Einstein gravity. Special attention is paid to the (1,1)-case. Truncation to the bosonic sector yields the previously found W(infinity) algebra, while truncation to the underlying finite-dimensional superalgebra reproduces the N-extended superconformal algebra (in its nonlinear version for N>2). We discuss string theory realization of these higher-spin anti-de Sitter supergravity theories as well as relations to previous treatments of super-W(infinity) in the literature.

Supersymmetric electric-magnetic duality as a manifest symmetry of the action for super-Maxwell theory and linearized supergravity

For the free massless spin-one and spin-two field theories one may write the action in a form which is manifestly invariant under electric-magnetic duality. This is achieved by introducing new potentials through solving the constraints of the Hamiltonian formulation. The price for making electric-magnetic duality invariance manifest through this direct procedure is losing manifest Lorentz invariance. Both theories admit supersymmetric extensions, which make the bosonic fields and their corresponding fermionic partners to be parts of the same geometrical object, a supermultiplet. We present in this paper the supersymmetric extension of the manifestly electric-magnetic duality invariant actions for the photon and the photino; and for the graviton and the gravitino. In each case the spinor fields transform under electric-magnetic duality in a chiral manner. For the spin-tree-half field, which possesses a gauge invariance, it is necessary to bring in a spinor "prepotential". As in previous cases the introduction of additional potentials to solve the constraints increases the number of gauge invariances of the action, thus keeping the number of degrees of freedom unaltered. The similarity in the formulations for the photon-photino and graviton-gravitino systems is remarkable.

Asymptotically warped anti-de Sitter spacetimes in topologically massive gravity

Asymptotically warped AdS spacetimes in topologically massive gravity with negative cosmological constant are considered in the case of spacelike stretched warping, where black holes have been shown to exist. We provide a set of asymptotic conditions that accommodate solutions in which the local degree of freedom (the "massive graviton") is switched on. An exact solution with this property is explicitly exhibited and possesses a slower fall-off than the warped AdS black hole. The boundary conditions are invariant under the semidirect product of the Virasoro algebra with a u(1) current algebra. We show that the canonical generators are integrable and finite. When the graviton is not excited, our analysis is compared and contrasted with earlier results obtained through the covariant approach to conserved charges. In particular, we find agreement with the conserved charges of the warped AdS black holes as well as with the central charges in the algebra.

Extended Charged Events and Chern-Simons Couplings

Recently, the concept of dynamical extended charged events has been introduced, and it has been argued that they should play as central a role as that played by particles or ordinary branes. In this article we show that in the presence of a Chern-Simons coupling, a magnetically charged extended event emits an extended object, which geometrically is just like a Dirac string, but it is observable, obeys equations of motion, and may be electrically charged. We write a complete action principle which accounts for this effect. The action involves two Chern-Simons terms, one integrated over spacetime and the other integrated over the worldvolume of the submanifold that is the union of the Dirac world-sheet and the history of the emitted physical object. By demanding that the total charge emitted by a composite extended magnetic event be quantized according to Dirac's rule, we find a quantization condition for the Chern-Simons coupling. For a 1-form electric potential in D=2n+1 spacetime dimensions, the composite event is formed by n elementary extended magnetic events separated in time such that the product of their transverse spaces, together with the time axis, is the entire spacetime. We show that the emitted electric charge is given by the integral of the (n-1)-th exterior power of the electromagnetic field strength over the last elementary event, or, equivalently, over an appropriate closed surface. The extension to more general p-form potentials and higher dimensions is also discussed. For the case D=11, p=3, our result for the quantization of the Chern-Simons coupling was obtained previously in the context of M-theory, a remarkable agreement that makes the existence of events even more compelling.

The Action for Twisted Self-Duality

One may write the Maxwell equations in terms of two gauge potentials, one electric and one magnetic, by demanding that their field strengths should be dual to each other. This requirement is the condition of twisted self-duality. It can be extended to p-forms in spacetime of D dimensions, and it survives the introduction of a variety of couplings among forms of different rank, and also to spinor and scalar fields, which emerge naturally from supergravity. In this paper we provide a systematic derivation of the action principle, whose equations of motion are the condition of twisted self-duality. The derivation starts from the standard Maxwell action, extended to include the aforementioned couplings, and proceeds via the Hamiltonian formalism through the resolution of Gauss' law. In the pure Maxwell case we recover in this way an action that had been postulated by other authors, through an ansatz based on an action given earlier by us for untwisted self-duality. Those authors also extended their ansatz to include Chern-Simons couplings. In that case, we find a different result. The derivation from the standard extended Maxwell action implies of course that the theory is Lorentz-invariant and can be locally coupled to gravity. Nevertherless we include a direct compact Hamiltonian proof of these properties, which is based on the surface-deformation algebra. The symmetry in the dependence of the action on the electric and magnetic variables is manifest, since they appear as canonical conjugates. Spacetime covariance, although present, is not manifest.

More on Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter Spaces in Topologically Massive Gravity

Recently, the asymptotic behaviour of three-dimensional anti-de Sitter gravity with a topological mass term was investigated. Boundary conditions were given that were asymptotically invariant under the two-dimensional conformal group and that included a fall-off of the metric sufficiently slow to consistently allow pp-wave type of solutions. Now, pp-waves can have two different chiralities. Above the chiral point and at the chiral point, however, only one chirality can be considered, namely the chirality that has the milder behaviour at infinity. The other chirality blows up faster than AdS and does not define an asymptotically AdS spacetime. By contrast, both chiralities are subdominant with respect to the asymptotic behaviour of AdS spacetime below the chiral point. Nevertheless, the boundary conditions given in the earlier treatment only included one of the two chiralities (which could be either one) at a time. We investigate in this paper whether one can generalize these boundary conditions in order to consider simultaneously both chiralities below the chiral point. We show that this is not possible if one wants to keep the two-dimensional conformal group as asymptotic symmetry group. Hence, the boundary conditions given in the earlier treatment appear to be the best possible ones compatible with conformal symmetry. In the course of our investigations, we provide general formulas controlling the asymptotic charges for all values of the topological mass (not just below the chiral point).

Nonlinear W(infinity) Algebra as Asymptotic Symmetry of Three-Dimensional Higher Spin Anti-de Sitter Gravity

We investigate the asymptotic symmetry algebra of (2+1)-dimensional higher spin, anti-de Sitter gravity. We use the formulation of the theory as a Chern-Simons gauge theory based on the higher spin algebra hs(1,1). Expanding the gauge connection around asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime, we specify consistent boundary conditions on the higher spin gauge fields. We then study residual gauge transformation, the corresponding surface terms and their Poisson bracket algebra. We find that the asymptotic symmetry algebra is a nonlinearly deformed W(infinity) algebra with classical central charges. We discuss implications of our results to quantum gravity and to various situations in string theory.

Remarks on Gauge Invariance and First-Class Constraints

Gauge symmetries lead to first-class constraints. This assertion is of course true only for non trivial gauge symmetries, i.e., gauge symmetries that act non trivially on-shell on the dynamical variables. We illustrate this well-appreciated fact for time reparametrization invariance in the context of modifications of gravity -suggested in a recent proposal by Horava-in which the Hamiltonian constraint is deformed by arbitrary spatial diffeomorphism invariant terms, where some subtleties are found to arise.

A dynamical inconsistency of Horava gravity

The dynamical consistency of the non-projectable version of Horava gravity is investigated by focusing on the asymptotically flat case. It is argued that for generic solutions of the constraint equations the lapse must vanish asymptotically. We then consider particular values of the coupling constants for which the equations are tractable and in that case we prove that the lapse must vanish everywhere -- and not only at infinity. Put differently, the Hamiltonian constraints are generically all second-class. We then argue that the same feature holds for generic values of the couplings, thus revealing a physical inconsistency of the theory. In order to cure this pathology, one might want to introduce further constraints but the resulting theory would then lose much of the appeal of the original proposal by Horava. We also show that there is no contradiction with the time reparametrization invariance of the action, as this invariance is shown to be a so-called "trivial gauge symmetry" in Horava gravity, hence with no associated first-class constraints.

On the E10/Massive Type IIA Supergravity Correspondence

In this paper we investigate in detail the correspondence between E10 and Romans' massive deformation of type IIA supergravity. We analyse the dynamics of a non-linear sigma model for a spinning particle on the coset space E10/K(E10) and show that it reproduces the dynamics of the bosonic as well as the fermionic sector of the massive IIA theory, within the standard truncation. The mass deformation parameter corresponds to a generator of E10 outside the realm of the generators entering the usual D=11 analysis, and is naturally included without any deformation of the coset model for E10/K(E10). Our analysis thus provides a dynamical unification of the massless and massive versions of type IIA supergravity inside E10. We discuss a number of additional and general features of relevance in the analysis of any deformed supergravity in the correspondence to Kac-Moody algebras, including recently studied deformations where the trombone symmetry is gauged.

Coxeter group structure of cosmological billiards on compact spatial manifolds

We present a systematic study of the cosmological billiard structures of Einstein-p-form systems in which all spatial directions are compactified on a manifold of nontrivial topology. This is achieved for all maximally oxidised theories associated with split real forms, for all possible compactifications as defined by the de Rham cohomology of the internal manifold. In each case, we study the Coxeter group that controls the dynamics for energy scales below the Planck scale as well as the relevant billiard region. We compare and contrast them with the Weyl group and fundamental domain that emerge from the general BKL analysis. For generic topologies we find a variety of possibilities: (i) The group may or may not be a simplex Coxeter group; (ii) The billiard region may or may not be a fundamental domain. When it is not a fundamental domain, it can be described as a sequence of pairwise adjacent chambers, known as a gallery, and the reflections in the billiard walls provide a non-standard presentation of the Coxeter group. We find that it is only when the Coxeter group is a simplex Coxeter group, and the billiard region is a fundamental domain, that there is a correspondence between billiard walls and simple roots of a Kac-Moody algebra, as in the general BKL analysis. For each compactification we also determine whether or not the resulting theory exhibits chaotic dynamics.

Spacelike Singularities and Hidden Symmetries of Gravity

We review the intimate connection between (super-)gravity close to a spacelike singularity (the "BKL-limit") and the theory of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras. We show that in this limit the gravitational theory can be reformulated in terms of billiard motion in a region of hyperbolic space, revealing that the dynamics is completely determined by a (possibly infinite) sequence of reflections, which are elements of a Lorentzian Coxeter group. Such Coxeter groups are the Weyl groups of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras, suggesting that these algebras yield symmetries of gravitational theories. Our presentation is aimed to be a self-contained and comprehensive treatment of the subject, with all the relevant mathematical background material introduced and explained in detail. We also review attempts at making the infinite-dimensional symmetries manifest, through the construction of a geodesic sigma model based on a Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebra. An explicit example is provided for the case of the hyperbolic algebra E10, which is conjectured to be an underlying symmetry of M-theory. Illustrations of this conjecture are also discussed in the context of cosmological solutions to eleven-dimensional supergravity.

A Monopole Near a Black Hole

We study an electric charge held at rest outside a magnetically charged black hole. We find that even if the electric charge is treated as a perturbation on a spherically symmetric magnetic Reissner-Nordstrom hole, the geometry at large distances is that of a magnetic Kerr-Newman black hole. When the charge approaches the horizon and crosses it, the exterior geometry becomes that of a Kerr-Newman hole with electric and magnetic charges and with total angular momentum given by the standard value for a charged monopole pair. Thus, in accordance with the "no-hair theorem", once the charge is captured by the black hole, the angular momentum associated with the charge monopole system, looses all traces of its exotic origin and it is perceived from the outside as common rotation. It is argued that a similar analysis performed on Taub-NUT space should give the same result, namely, if one holds an ordinary mass outside of the horizon of a Taub-NUT space with only magnetic mass, the system, as seen from large distances, is endowed with an angular momentum proportional to the product of the two kinds of masses. When the ordinary, electric, mass reaches the horizon, the exterior metric becomes that of a rotating Taub-NUT space.

From very-extended to overextended gravity and M-theories

The formulation of gravity and M-theories as very-extended Kac-Moody invariant theories encompasses, for each very-extended algebra G+++, two distinct actions invariant under the overextended Kac-Moody subalgebra G++. The first carries a Euclidean signature and is the generalisation to G++ of the E10-invariant action proposed in the context of M-theory and cosmological billiards. The second action carries various Lorentzian signatures revealed through various equivalent formulations related by Weyl transformations of fields. It admits exact solutions, identical to those of the maximally oxidised field theories and of their exotic counterparts, which describe intersecting extremal branes smeared in all directions but one. The Weyl transformations of G++ relates these solutions by conventional and exotic dualities. These exact solutions, common to the Kac-Moody theories and to space-time covariant theories, provide a laboratory for analysing the significance of the infinite set of fields appearing in the Kac-Moody formulations.

Einstein billiards and overextensions of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras

In recent papers, it has been shown that (i) the dynamics of theories involving gravity can be described, in the vicinity of a spacelike singularity, as a billiard motion in a region of hyperbolic space bounded by hyperplanes; and (ii) that the relevant billiard has remarkable symmetry properties in the case of pure gravity in $d+1$ spacetime dimensions, or supergravity theories in 10 or 11 spacetime dimensions, for which it turns out to be the fundamental Weyl chamber of the Kac-Moody algebras $AE_d$, $E_{10}$, $BE_{10}$ or $DE_{10}$ (depending on the model). We analyse in this paper the billiards associated to other theories containing gravity, whose toroidal reduction to three dimensions involves coset models $G/H$ (with $G$ maximally non compact). We show that in each case, the billiard is the fundamental Weyl chamber of the (indefinite) Kac-Moody ``overextension'' (or ``canonical Lorentzian extension'') of the finite-dimensional Lie algebra that appears in the toroidal compactification to 3 spacetime dimensions. A remarkable feature of the billiard properties, however, is that they do not depend on the spacetime dimension in which the theory is analyzed and hence are rather robust, while the symmetry algebra that emerges in the toroidal dimensional reduction is dimension-dependent.

E_(10), BE_(10) and Arithmetical Chaos in Superstring Cosmology

It is shown that the never ending oscillatory behaviour of the generic solution, near a cosmological singularity, of the massless bosonic sector of superstring theory can be described as a billiard motion within a simplex in 9-dimensional hyperbolic space. The Coxeter group of reflections of this billiard is discrete and is the Weyl group of the hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra E$_{10}$ (for type II) or BE$_{10}$ (for type I or heterotic), which are both arithmetic. These results lead to a proof of the chaotic (``Anosov'') nature of the classical cosmological oscillations, and suggest a ``chaotic quantum billiard'' scenario of vacuum selection in string theory.

Local BRST cohomology in gauge theories

The general solution of the anomaly consistency condition (Wess-Zumino equation) has been found recently for Yang-Mills gauge theory. The general form of the counterterms arising in the renormalization of gauge invariant operators (Kluberg-Stern and Zuber conjecture) and in gauge theories of the Yang-Mills type with non power counting renormalizable couplings has also been worked out in any number of spacetime dimensions. This Physics Report is devoted to reviewing in a self-contained manner these results and their proofs. This involves computing cohomology groups of the differential introduced by Becchi, Rouet, Stora and Tyutin, with the sources of the BRST variations of the fields ("antifields") included in the problem. Applications of this computation to other physical questions (classical deformations of the action, conservation laws) are also considered. The general algebraic techniques developed in the Report can be applied to other gauge theories, for which relevant references are given.

A Theorem on First-Order Interaction Vertices for Free p-Form Gauge Fields

The complete proof of a theorem announced in [1] on the consistent interactions for (non-chiral) exterior form gauge fields is given. The theorem can be easily generalized to the analysis of anomalies. Its proof amounts to computing the local BRST cohomology H^0(s|d) in the space of local n-forms depending on the fields, the ghosts, the antifields and their derivatives.

BRST cohomology of the Chapline-Manton model

We completely compute the local BRST cohomology $H(s|d)$ of the combined Yang-Mills-2-form system coupled through the Yang-Mills Chern-Simons term ("Chapline-Manton model"). We consider the case of a simple gauge group and explicitely include in the analysis the sources for the BRST variations of the fields ("antifields"). We show that there is an antifield independent representative in each cohomological class of $H(s|d)$ at ghost number 0 or 1. Accordingly, any counterterm may be assumed to preserve the gauge symmetries. Similarly, there is no new candidate anomaly beside those already considered in the literature, even when one takes the antifields into account. We then characterize explicitly all the non-trivial solutions of the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions. In particular, we provide a cohomological interpretation of the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism.

Extended antifield-formalism

The antifield formalism is extended so as to incorporate the rigid symmetries of a given theory. To that end, it is necessary to introduce global ghosts not only for the given rigid symmetries, but also for all the higher order conservation laws, associated with conserved antisymmetric tensors. Otherwise, one may encounter obstructions of the type discussed in [13]. These higher order conservation laws are shown to define additional rigid symmetries of the master equation and to form -- together with the standard symmetries -- an interesting algebraic structure. They lead furthermore to independent Ward identities which are derived in the standard manner, because the resulting master ("Zinn-Justin") equation capturing both the gauge symmetries and the rigid symmetries of all orders takes a known form. Issues such as anomalies or consistent deformations of the action preserving some set of rigid symmetries can be also systematically analysed in this framework.

Characteristic cohomology of $p$-form gauge theories

The characteristic cohomology $H^k_{char}(d)$ for an arbitrary set of free $p$-form gauge fields is explicitly worked out in all form degrees $k<n-1$, where $n$ is the spacetime dimension. It is shown that this cohomology is finite-dimensional and completely generated by the forms dual to the field strengths. The gauge invariant characteristic cohomology is also computed. The results are extended to interacting $p$-form gauge theories with gauge invariant interactions. Implications for the BRST cohomology are mentioned.

Global Symmetries in the Antifield-Formalism

In this paper, two things are done. (i) First, it is shown that any global symmetry of a gauge-invariant theory can be extended to the ghosts and the antifields so as to leave invariant the solution of the master-equation (before gauge fixing). (ii) Second, it is proved that the incorporation of the rigid symmetries to the solution of the master-equation through the introduction of a constant ghost for each global symmetry can be obstructed already at the classical level whenever the theory possesses higher order conservation laws. Explicit examples are given.

Local BRST cohomology in Einstein--Yang--Mills theory

We analyse in detail the local BRST cohomology in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory using the antifield formalism. We do not restrict the Lagrangian to be the sum of the standard Hilbert and Yang-Mills Lagrangians, but allow for more general diffeomorphism and gauge invariant actions. The analysis is carried out in all spacetime dimensions larger than 2 and for all ghost numbers. This covers the classification of all candidate anomalies, of all consistent deformations of the action, as well as the computation of the (equivariant) characteristic cohomology, i.e. the cohomology of the spacetime exterior derivative in the space of (gauge invariant) local differential forms modulo forms that vanish on-shell. We show in particular that for a semi-simple Yang-Mills gauge group the antifield dependence can be entirely removed both from the consistent deformations of the Lagrangian and from the candidate anomalies. Thus, the allowed deformations of the action necessarily preserve the gauge structure, while the only candidate anomalies are those provided by previous works not dealing with antifields, and by ``topological" candidate anomalies which are present only in special spacetime dimensions (6,9,10,13,...). This result no longer holds in presence of abelian factors where new candidate anomalies and deformations of the action can be constructed out of the conserved Noether currents (if any). The Noether currents themselves are shown to be covariantizable, with a few exceptions discussed as well.

Bianchi Cosmological Models and Gauge Symmetries

We analyze carefully the problem of gauge symmetries for Bianchi models, from both the geometrical and dynamical points of view. Some of the geometrical definitions of gauge symmetries (=``homogeneity preserving diffeomorphisms'') given in the literature do not incorporate the crucial feature that local gauge transformations should be independent at each point of the manifold of the independent variables ( = time for Bianchi models), i.e, should be arbitrarily localizable ( in time). We give a geometrical definition of homogeneity preserving diffeomorphisms that does not possess this shortcoming. The proposed definition has the futher advantage of coinciding with the dynamical definition based on the invariance of the action ( in Lagrangian or Hamiltonian form). We explicitly verify the equivalence of the Lagrangian covariant phase space with the Hamiltonian reduced phase space. Remarks on the use of the Ashtekar variables in Bianchi models are also given.
