Inertial Navigation Using an Inertial Sensor Array

We present a comprehensive framework for fusing measurements from multiple and generally placed accelerometers and gyroscopes to perform inertial navigation. Using the angular acceleration provided by the accelerometer array, we show that the numerical integration of the orientation can be done with second-order accuracy, which is more accurate compared to the traditional first-order accuracy that can be achieved when only using the gyroscopes. Since orientation errors are the most significant error source in inertial navigation, improving the orientation estimation reduces the overall navigation error. The practical performance benefit depends on prior knowledge of the inertial sensor array, and therefore we present four different state-space models using different underlying assumptions regarding the orientation modeling. The models are evaluated using a Lie Group Extended Kalman filter through simulations and real-world experiments. We also show how individual accelerometer biases are unobservable and can be replaced by a six-dimensional bias term whose dimension is fixed and independent of the number of accelerometers.

Learning Driver Behaviors Using A Gaussian Process Augmented State-Space Model

An inference method for Gaussian process augmented state-space models are presented. This class of grey-box models enables domain knowledge to be incorporated in the inference process to guarantee a minimum of performance, still they are flexible enough to permit learning of partially unknown model dynamics and inputs. To facilitate online (recursive) inference of the model a sparse approximation of the Gaussian process based upon inducing points is presented. To illustrate the application of the model and the inference method, an example where it is used to track the position and learn the behavior of a set of cars passing through an intersection, is presented. Compared to the case when only the state-space model is used, the use of the augmented state-space model gives both a reduced estimation error and bias.

Exploring Positive Noise in Estimation Theory

Estimation of a deterministic quantity observed in non-Gaussian additive noise is explored via order statistics approach. More specifically, we study the estimation problem when measurement noises either have positive supports or follow a mixture of normal and uniform distribution. This is a problem of great interest specially in cellular positioning systems where the wireless signal is prone to multiple sources of noises which generally have a positive support. Multiple noise distributions are investigated and, if possible, minimum variance unbiased (MVU) estimators are derived. In case of uniform, exponential and Rayleigh noise distributions, unbiased estimators without any knowledge of the hyper parameters of the noise distributions are also given. For each noise distribution, the proposed order statistic-based estimator's performance, in terms of mean squared error, is compared to the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE), as a function of sample size, in a simulation study.

Online inference in Markov modulated nonlinear dynamic systems: a Rao-Blackwellized particle filtering approach

The Markov modulated (switching) state space is an important model paradigm in applied statistics. In this article, we specifically consider Markov modulated nonlinear state-space models and address the online Bayesian inference problem for such models. In particular, we propose a new Rao-Blackwellized particle filter for the inference task which is our main contribution here. The detailed descriptions including an algorithmic summary are subsequently presented.
