Dynamical Localization in Disordered Quantum Spin Systems

We say that a quantum spin system is dynamically localized if the time-evolution of local observables satisfies a zero-velocity Lieb-Robinson bound. In terms of this definition we have the following main results: First, for general systems with short range interactions, dynamical localization implies exponential decay of ground state correlations, up to an explicit correction. Second, the dynamical localization of random xy spin chains can be reduced to dynamical localization of an effective one-particle Hamiltonian. In particular, the isotropic xy chain in random exterior magnetic field is dynamically localized.

Quantum harmonic oscillator systems with disorder

We study many-body properties of quantum harmonic oscillator lattices with disorder. A sufficient condition for dynamical localization, expressed as a zero-velocity Lieb-Robinson bound, is formulated in terms of the decay of the eigenfunction correlators for an effective one-particle Hamiltonian. We show how state-of-the-art techniques for proving Anderson localization can be used to prove that these properties hold in a number of standard models. We also derive bounds on the static and dynamic correlation functions at both zero and positive temperature in terms of one-particle eigenfunction correlators. In particular, we show that static correlations decay exponentially fast if the corresponding effective one-particle Hamiltonian exhibits localization at low energies, regardless of whether there is a gap in the spectrum above the ground state or not. Our results apply to finite as well as to infinite oscillator systems. The eigenfunction correlators that appear are more general than those previously studied in the literature. In particular, we must allow for functions of the Hamiltonian that have a singularity at the bottom of the spectrum. We prove exponential bounds for such correlators for some of the standard models.

Spectral Properties of the Discrete Random Displacement Model

We investigate spectral properties of a discrete random displacement model, a Schrödinger operator on $\ell^2(\Z^d)$ with potential generated by randomly displacing finitely supported single-site terms from the points of a sublattice of $\Z^d$. In particular, we characterize the upper and lower edges of the almost sure spectrum. For a one-dimensional model with Bernoulli distributed displacements, we can show that the integrated density of states has a $1/\log^2$-singularity at external as well as internal band edges.

A Continuum Version of the Kunz-Souillard Approach to Localization in One Dimension

We consider continuum one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with potentials that are given by a sum of a suitable background potential and an Anderson-type potential whose single-site distribution has a continuous and compactly supported density. We prove exponential decay of the expectation of the finite volume correlators, uniform in any compact energy region, and deduce from this dynamical and spectral localization. The proofs implement a continuum analog of the method Kunz and Souillard developed in 1980 to study discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with potentials of the form background plus random.

A note on fractional moments for the one-dimensional continuum Anderson model

We give a proof of dynamical localization in the form of exponential decay of spatial correlations in the time evolution for the one-dimensional continuum Anderson model via the fractional moments method. This follows via exponential decay of fractional moments of the Green function, which is shown to hold at arbitrary energy and for any single-site distribution with bounded, compactly supported density.

Dynamical Localization for Unitary Anderson Models

This paper establishes dynamical localization properties of certain families of unitary random operators on the d-dimensional lattice in various regimes. These operators are generalizations of one-dimensional physical models of quantum transport and draw their name from the analogy with the discrete Anderson model of solid state physics. They consist in a product of a deterministic unitary operator and a random unitary operator. The deterministic operator has a band structure, is absolutely continuous and plays the role of the discrete Laplacian. The random operator is diagonal with elements given by i.i.d. random phases distributed according to some absolutely continuous measure and plays the role of the random potential. In dimension one, these operators belong to the family of CMV-matrices in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. We implement the method of Aizenman-Molchanov to prove exponential decay of the fractional moments of the Green function for the unitary Anderson model in the following three regimes: In any dimension, throughout the spectrum at large disorder and near the band edges at arbitrary disorder and, in dimension one, throughout the spectrum at arbitrary disorder. We also prove that exponential decay of fractional moments of the Green function implies dynamical localization, which in turn implies spectral localization. These results complete the analogy with the self-adjoint case where dynamical localization is known to be true in the same three regimes.

Lyapunov Exponents for Unitary Anderson Models

We study a unitary version of the one-dimensional Anderson model, given by a five diagonal deterministic unitary operator multiplicatively perturbed by a random phase matrix. We fully characterize positivity and vanishing of the Lyapunov exponent for this model throughout the spectrum and for arbitrary distributions of the random phases. This includes Bernoulli distributions, where in certain cases a finite number of critical spectral values, with vanishing Lyapunov exponent, exists. We establish similar results for a unitary version of the random dimer model.

Localization near fluctuation boundaries via fractional moments and applications

We present a new, short, self-contained proof of localization properties of multi-dimensional continuum random Schrödinger operators in the fluctuation boundary regime. Our method is based on the recent extension of the fractional moment method to continuum models in by Aizenman et al, but does not require the random potential to satisfy a covering condition. Applications to random surface potentials and potentials with random displacements are included.

Lower Transport Bounds for One-Dimensional Continuum Schrödinger Operators

We prove quantum dynamical lower bounds for one-dimensional continuum Schrödinger operators that possess critical energies for which there is slow growth of transfer matrix norms and a large class of compactly supported initial states. This general result is applied to a number of models, including the Bernoulli-Anderson model with a constant single-site potential.

Localization for Discrete One Dimensional Random Word Models

We consider Schrödinger operators in $\ell^2(\Z)$ whose potentials are obtained by randomly concatenating words from an underlying set $\mathcal{W}$ according to some probability measure $ν$ on $\mathcal{W}$. Our assumptions allow us to consider models with local correlations, such as the random dimer model or, more generally, random polymer models. We prove spectral localization and, away from a finite set of exceptional energies, dynamical localization for such models. These results are obtained by employing scattering theoretic methods together with Furstenberg's theorem to verify the necessary input to perform a multiscale analysis.

A generalization of Gordon's theorem and applications to quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators

We prove a criterion for absence of eigenvalues for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators. This criterion can be regarded as an $L^1$-version of Gordon's theorem and it has a broader range of application. Absence of eigenvalues is then established for quasiperiodic potentials generated by Liouville frequencies and various types of functions such as step functions, Hölder continuous functions and functions with power-type singularities. The proof is based on Gronwall-type a priori estimates for solutions of Schrödinger equations.

Localization for One Dimensional, Continuum, Bernoulli-Anderson Models

We use scattering theoretic methods to prove strong dynamical and exponential localization for one dimensional, continuum, Anderson-type models with singular distributions; in particular the case of a Bernoulli distribution is covered. The operators we consider model alloys composed of at least two distinct types of randomly dispersed atoms. Our main tools are the reflection and transmission coefficients for compactly supported single site perturbations of a periodic background which we use to verify the necessary hypotheses of multi-scale analysis. We show that non-reflectionless single sites lead to a discrete set of exceptional energies away from which localization occurs.
