Directional Ballistic Transport for Partially Periodic Schrödinger Operators on $\mathbb{Z}^2$

We study the transport properties of Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with potentials that are periodic in one direction and compactly supported in the other. Such systems are known to produce surface states that are weakly confined near the support of the potential. We demonstrate that surface states exhibit what we describe as directional ballistic transport, characterized by a strong form of ballistic transport along the periodic direction and its absence in the compactly supported one. By showing that the scattering states exhibit ballistic transport, we obtain ballistic transport for a dense subset of all of $\ell^2(\mathbb {Z} ^2)$.

Gap Labelling for Discrete One-Dimensional Ergodic Schrödinger Operators

In this survey, we give an introduction to and proof of the gap labelling theorem for discrete one-dimensional ergodic Schrödinger operators via the Schwartzman homomorphism. To keep the paper relatively self-contained, we include background on the integrated density of states, the oscillation theorem for 1D operators, and the construction of the Schwartzman homomorphism. We illustrate the result with some examples. In particular, we show how to use the Schwartzman formalism to recover the classical gap-labelling theorem for almost-periodic potentials. We also consider operators generated by subshifts and operators generated by affine homeomorphisms of finite-dimensional tori. In the latter case, one can use the gap-labelling theorem to show that the spectrum associated with potentials generated by suitable transformations (such as Arnold's cat map) is an interval.

Johnson-Schwartzman Gap Labelling for Ergodic Jacobi Matrices

We consider two-sided Jacobi matrices whose coefficients are obtained by continuous sampling along the orbits of a homeomorphim of a compact metric space. Given an ergodic probability measure, we study the topological structure of the associated almost sure spectrum. We establish a gap labelling theorem in the spirit of Johnson and Schwartzman. That is, we show that the constant value the integrated density of states takes in a gap of the spectrum must belong to the countable Schwartzman group of the base dynamics. This result is a natural companion to a recent result of Alkorn and Zhang, which established a Johnson-type theorem for the families of Jacobi matrices in question.

The Almost Sure Essential Spectrum of the Doubling Map Model is Connected

We consider discrete Schrödinger operators on the half line with potentials generated by the doubling map and continuous sampling functions. We show that the essential spectrum of these operators is always connected. This result is obtained by computing the subgroup of the range of the Schwartzman homomorphism associated with homotopy classes of continuous maps on the suspension of the standard solenoid that factor through the suspension of the doubling map and then showing that this subgroup characterizes the topological structure of the spectrum.

Uniformity Aspects of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ Cocycles and Applications to Schrödinger Operators Defined Over Boshernitzan Subshifts

We consider continuous $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ valued cocycles over general dynamical systems and discuss a variety of uniformity notions. In particular, we provide a description of uniform one-parameter families of continuous $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ cocycles as $G_δ$-sets. These results are then applied to Schrödinger operators with dynamically defined potentials. In the case where the base dynamics is given by a subshift satisfying the Boshernitzan condition, we show that for a generic continuous sampling function, the associated Schrödinger cocycles are uniform for all energies and, in the aperiodic case, the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure.

Generic Spectral Results for CMV Matrices with Dynamically Defined Verblunsky Coefficients

We consider CMV matrices with dynamically defined Verblunsky coefficients. These coefficients are obtained by continuous sampling along the orbits of an ergodic transformation. We investigate whether certain spectral phenomena are generic in the sense that for a fixed base transformation, the set of continuous sampling functions for which the spectral phenomenon occurs is residual. Among the phenomena we discuss are the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum and the vanishing of the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum.

Multidimensional Schrödinger Operators Whose Spectrum Features a Half-Line and a Cantor Set

We construct multidimensional Schrödinger operators with a spectrum that has no gaps at high energies and that is nowhere dense at low energies. This gives the first example for which this widely expected topological structure of the spectrum in the class of uniformly recurrent Schrödinger operators, namely the coexistence of a half-line and a Cantor-type structure, can be confirmed. Our construction uses Schrödinger operators with separable potentials that decompose into one-dimensional potentials generated by the Fibonacci sequence and relies on the study of such operators via the trace map and the Fricke-Vogt invariant. To show that the spectrum contains a half-line, we prove an abstract Bethe--Sommerfeld criterion for sums of Cantor sets which may be of independent interest.

Schrödinger Operators with Thin Spectra

The determination of the spectrum of a Schrödinger operator is a fundamental problem in mathematical quantum mechanics. We discuss a series of results showing that Schrödinger operators can exhibit spectra that are remarkably thin in the sense of Lebesgue measure and fractal dimensions. We begin with a brief discussion of results in the periodic theory, and then move to a discussion of aperiodic models with thin spectra.

Quantum Intermittency for Sparse CMV Matrices with an Application to Quantum Walks on the Half-Line

We study the dynamics given by the iteration of a (half-line) CMV matrix with sparse, high barriers. Using an approach of Tcheremchantsev, we are able to explicitly compute the transport exponents for this model in terms of the given parameters. In light of the connection between CMV matrices and quantum walks on the half-line due to Cantero-Grünbaum-Moral-Velázquez, our result also allows us to compute transport exponents corresponding to a quantum walk which is sparsely populated with strong reflectors. To the best of our knowledge, this provides the first rigorous example of a quantum walk which exhibits quantum intermittency, i.e., nonconstancy of the transport exponents. When combined with the CMV version of the Jitomirskaya-Last theory of subordinacy and the general discrete-time dynamical bounds from Damanik-Fillman-Vance, we are able to exactly compute the Hausdorff dimension of the associated spectral measure.

Spreading Estimates for Quantum Walks on the Integer Lattice via Power-Law Bounds on Transfer Matrices

We discuss spreading estimates for dynamical systems given by the iteration of an extended CMV matrix. Using a connection due to Cantero--Grünbaum--Moral--Velázquez, this enables us to study spreading rates for quantum walks in one spatial dimension. We prove several general results which establish quantitative upper and lower bounds on the spreading of a quantum walk in terms of estimates on a pair of associated matrix cocycles. To demonstrate the power and utility of these methods, we apply them to several concrete cases of interest. In the case where the coins are distributed according to an element of the Fibonacci subshift, we are able to rather completely describe the dynamics in a particular asymptotic regime. As a pleasant consequence, this supplies the first concrete example of a quantum walk with anomalous transport, to the best of our knowldege. We also prove ballistic transport for a quantum walk whose coins are periodically distributed.

Sums of regular Cantor sets of large dimension and the Square Fibonacci Hamiltonian

We show that under natural technical conditions, the sum of a $C^2$ dynamically defined Cantor set with a compact set in most cases (for almost all parameters) has positive Lebesgue measure, provided that the sum of the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets exceeds one. As an application, we show that for many parameters, the Square Fibonacci Hamiltonian has spectrum of positive Lebesgue measure, while at the same time the density of states measure is purely singular.

Dynamics of Unitary Operators

We consider the iteration of a unitary operator on a separable Hilbert space and study the spreading rates of the associated discrete-time dynamical system relative to a given orthonormal basis. We prove lower bounds for the transport exponents, which measure the time-averaged spreading on a power-law scale, in terms of dimensional properties of the spectral measure associated with the unitary operator and the initial state. These results are the unitary analog of results established in recent years for the dynamics of the Schrödinger equation, which is a continuum-time dynamical system associated with a self-adjoint operator. We discuss how these general results may be studied by means of subordinacy theory in cases where the unitary operator is given by a CMV matrix. An example of particular interest in which this scenario arises is given by a time-homogeneous quantum walk on the integers. For the particular case of the time-homogeneous Fibonacci quantum walk, we illustrate how these components work together and produce explicit lower bounds for the transport exponents associated with this model.

On the Existence and Uniqueness of Global Solutions for the KdV Equation with Quasi-Periodic Initial Data

We consider the KdV equation $$ \partial_t u +\partial^3_x u +u\partial_x u=0 $$ with quasi-periodic initial data whose Fourier coefficients decay exponentially and prove existence and uniqueness, in the class of functions which have an expansion with exponentially decaying Fourier coefficients, of a solution on a small interval of time, the length of which depends on the given data and the frequency vector involved. For a Diophantine frequency vector and for small quasi-periodic data (i.e., when the Fourier coefficients obey $|c(m)| \le \varepsilon \exp(-κ_0 |m|)$ with $\varepsilon > 0$ sufficiently small, depending on $κ_0 > 0$ and the frequency vector), we prove global existence and uniqueness of the solution. The latter result relies on our recent work \cite{DG} on the inverse spectral problem for the quasi-periodic Schrödinger equation.

Quantum Dynamics of Periodic and Limit-Periodic Jacobi and Block Jacobi Matrices with Applications to Some Quantum Many Body Problems

We investigate quantum dynamics with the underlying Hamiltonian being a Jacobi or a block Jacobi matrix with the diagonal and the off-diagonal terms modulated by a periodic or a limit-periodic sequence. In particular, we investigate the transport exponents. In the periodic case we demonstrate ballistic transport, while in the limit-periodic case we discuss various phenomena such as quasi-ballistic transport and weak dynamical localization. We also present applications to some quantum many body problems. In particular, we establish for the anisotropic XY chain on $\mathbb{Z}$ with periodic parameters an explicit strictly positive lower bound for the Lieb-Robinson velocity.

Spectral Properties of Schrödinger Operators With Pattern Sturmian Potentials

We consider discrete Schrödinger operators with pattern Sturmian potentials. This class of potentials strictly contains the class of Sturmian potentials, for which the spectral properties of the associated Schrödinger operators are well understood. In particular, it is known that for every Sturmian potential, the associated Schrödinger operator has zero-measure spectrum and purely singular continuous spectral measures. We conjecture that the same statements hold in the more general class of pattern Sturmian potentials. We prove partial results in support of this conjecture. In particular, we confirm the conjecture for all pattern Sturmian potentials that belong to the family of Toeplitz sequences.

Almost Everywhere Positivity of the Lyapunov Exponent for the Doubling Map

We show that discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the half-line with ergodic potentials generated by the doubling map on the circle, $V_θ(n) = f(2^n θ)$, may be realized as the half-line restrictions of a non-deterministic family of whole-line operators. As a consequence, the Lyapunov exponent is almost everywhere positive and the absolutely continuous spectrum is almost surely empty.

Counterexamples to the Kotani-Last Conjecture for Continuum Schrödinger Operators via Character-Automorphic Hardy Spaces

The Kotani-Last conjecture states that every ergodic operator in one space dimension with non-empty absolutely continuous spectrum must have almost periodic coefficients. This statement makes sense in a variety of settings; for example, discrete Schrödinger operators, Jacobi matrices, CMV matrices, and continuum Schrödinger operators. In the main body of this paper we show how to construct counterexamples to the Kotani-Last conjecture for continuum Schrödinger operators by adapting the approach developed by Volberg and Yuditskii to construct counterexamples to the Kotani-Last conjecture for Jacobi matrices. This approach relates the reflectionless operators associated with the prescribed spectrum to a family of character-automorphic Hardy spaces and then relates the shift action on the space of operators to the resulting action on the associated characters. The key to our approach is an explicit correspondence between the space of continuum reflectionless Schrödinger operators associated with a given set and the space of reflectionless Jacobi matrices associated with a derived set. Once this correspondence is established we can rely to a large extent on the previous work of Volberg and Yuditskii to produce the resulting action on the space of characters. We analyze this action and identify situations where we can observe absolute continuity without almost periodicity. In the appendix we show how to implement this strategy and obtain analogous results for extended CMV matrices.

Finite Automata With Restricted Two-Way Motion

We consider finite two-way automata and measure the use of two-way motion by counting the number of left moves in accepting computations. Restriction of the automata according to this measure allows us to study in detail the use of two-way motion for the acceptance of regular languages in terms of state complexity. The two-way spectrum of a given regular language is introduced. This quantity reflects the change of size of minimal accepting devices if the use of two-way motion is increased incrementally. We give examples for spectra, prove uniform upper and lower bounds and study their sharpness. We also have state complexity results for two-way automata with uniformly bounded use of two-way motion.

New Anomalous Lieb-Robinson Bounds in Quasi-Periodic XY Chains

We announce and sketch the rigorous proof of a new kind of anomalous (or sub-ballistic) Lieb-Robinson bound for an isotropic XY chain in a quasi-periodic transversal magnetic field. By "anomalous", we mean that the usual effective light cone defined by $|x|\leq v|t|$ is replaced by the region $|x|\leq v|t|^α$ for some $0<α<1$. In fact, we can characterize exactly the values of $α$ for which this holds as those exceeding the upper transport exponent $α_u^+$ of an appropriate one-body discrete Schrödinger operator. Previous study has produced a good amount of quantitative information on $α_u^+$. The result is obtained by mapping to free fermions, obtaining good dynamical bounds on the one-body level by adapting techniques developed by Damanik, Gorodetski, Tcheremchantsev, and Yessen and then "pulling back" these bounds through the non-local Jordan-Wigner transformation, following an idea of Hamza, Sims, and Stolz. To our knowledge, this is the first rigorous derivation of anomalous many-body transport. We also explain why our method does not extend to yield anomalous LR bounds of power-law type if one replaces the quasi-periodic field by a random dimer field.

On the Inverse Spectral Problem for the Quasi-Periodic Schrödinger Equation

We study the quasi-periodic Schrödinger equation $$ -ψ"(x) + V(x) ψ(x) = E ψ(x), \qquad x \in \IR $$ in the regime of "small" $V$. Let $(E_m',E"_m)$, $m \in \zv$, be the standard labeled gaps in the spectrum. Our main result says that if $E"_m - E'_m \le \ve \exp(-κ_0 |m|)$ for all $m \in \zv$, with $\ve$ being small enough, depending on $κ_0 > 0$ and the frequency vector involved, then the Fourier coefficients of $V$ obey $|c(m)| \le \ve^{1/2} \exp(-\frac{κ_0}{2} |m|)$ for all $m \in \zv$. On the other hand we prove that if $|c(m)| \le \ve \exp(-κ_0 |m|)$ with $\ve$ being small enough, depending on $κ_0 > 0$ and the frequency vector involved, then $E"_m - E'_m \le 2 \ve \exp(-\frac{κ_0}{2} |m|)$.

Singular Density of States Measure for Subshift and Quasi-Periodic Schrödinger Operators

Simon's subshift conjecture states that for every aperiodic minimal subshift of Verblunsky coefficients, the common essential support of the associated measures has zero Lebesgue measure. We disprove this conjecture in this paper, both in the form stated and in the analogous formulation of it for discrete Schrödinger operators. In addition we prove a weak version of the conjecture in the Schrödinger setting. Namely, under some additional assumptions on the subshift, we show that the density of states measure, a natural measure associated with the operator family and whose topological support is equal to the spectrum, is singular. We also consider one-frequency quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators with continuous sampling functions and show that generically, the density of states measure is singular as well.

Spectral Properties of Schrödinger Operators Arising in the Study of Quasicrystals

We survey results that have been obtained for self-adjoint operators, and especially Schrödinger operators, associated with mathematical models of quasicrystals. After presenting general results that hold in arbitrary dimensions, we focus our attention on the one-dimensional case, and in particular on several key examples. The most prominent of these is the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, for which much is known by now and to which an entire section is devoted here. Other examples that are discussed in detail are given by the more general class of Schrödinger operators with Sturmian potentials. We put some emphasis on the methods that have been introduced quite recently in the study of these operators, many of them coming from hyperbolic dynamics. We conclude with a multitude of numerical calculations that illustrate the validity of the known rigorous results and suggest conjectures for further exploration.

Transport Exponents of Sturmian Hamiltonians

We consider discrete Schrödinger operators with Sturmian potentials and study the transport exponents associated with them. Under suitable assumptions on the frequency, we establish upper and lower bounds for the upper transport exponents. As an application of these bounds, we identify the large coupling asymptotics of the upper transport exponents for frequencies of constant type. We also bound the large coupling asymptotics uniformly from above for Lebesgue-typical frequency. A particular consequence of these results is that for most frequencies of constant type, transport is faster than for Lebesgue almost every frequency. We also show quasi-ballistic transport for all coupling constants, generic frequencies, and suitable phases.

Uniform Hyperbolicity for Szegő Cocycles and Applications to Random CMV Matrices and the Ising Model

We consider products of the matrices associated with the Szegő recursion from the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and show that under suitable assumptions, their norms grow exponentially in the number of factors. In the language of dynamical systems, this result expresses a uniform hyperbolicity statement. We present two applications of this result. On the one hand, we identify explicitly the almost sure spectrum of extended CMV matrices with non-negative random Verblunsky coefficients. On the other hand, we show that no Ising model in one dimension exhibits a phase transition. Also, in the case of dynamically generated interaction couplings, we describe a gap labeling theorem for the Lee-Yang zeros in the thermodynamic limit.

Orthogonal Polynomials on the Unit Circle with Fibonacci Verblunsky Coefficients, II. Applications

We consider CMV matrices with Verblunsky coefficients determined in an appropriate way by the Fibonacci sequence and present two applications of the spectral theory of such matrices to problems in mathematical physics. In our first application we estimate the spreading rates of quantum walks on the line with time-independent coins following the Fibonacci sequence. The estimates we obtain are explicit in terms of the parameters of the system. In our second application, we establish a connection between the classical nearest neighbor Ising model on the one-dimensional lattice in the complex magnetic field regime, and CMV operators. In particular, given a sequence of nearest-neighbor interaction couplings, we construct a sequence of Verblunsky coefficients, such that the support of the Lee-Yang zeros of the partition function for the Ising model in the thermodynamic limit coincides with the essential spectrum of the CMV matrix with the constructed Verblunsky coefficients. Under certain technical conditions, we also show that the zeros distribution measure coincides with the density of states measure for the CMV matrix.

Continuum Schrödinger Operators Associated With Aperiodic Subshifts

We study Schrödinger operators on the real line whose potentials are generated by an underlying ergodic subshift over a finite alphabet and a rule that replaces symbols by compactly supported potential pieces. We first develop the standard theory that shows that the spectrum and the spectral type are almost surely constant, and that identifies the almost sure absolutely continuous spectrum with the essential closure of the set of energies with vanishing Lyapunov exponent. Using results of Damanik-Lenz and Klassert-Lenz-Stollmann, we also show that the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure if the subhift satisfies the Boshernitzan condition and the potentials are aperiodic and irreducible. We then study the case of the Fibonacci subshift in detail and prove results for the local Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum at a given energy in terms of the value of the associated Fricke-Vogt invariant. These results are elucidated for some simple choices of the local potential pieces, such as piecewise constant ones and local point interactions. In the latter special case, our results explain the occurrence of so-called pseudo bands, which have been pointed out in the physics literature.

Limit-Periodic Schrodinger Operators on Z^d: Uniform Localization

We exhibit d-dimensional limit-periodic Schrodinger operators that are uniformly localized in the strongest sense possible. That is, for each of these operators, there is a uniform exponential decay rate such that every element of the hull of the corresponding Schrodinger operator has a complete set of eigenvectors that decay exponentially off their centers of localization at least as fast as prescribed by the uniform decay rate. Consequently, these operators exhibit uniform dynamical localization.

The Density of States Measure of the Weakly Coupled Fibonacci Hamiltonian

We consider the density of states measure of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian and show that, for small values of the coupling constant $V$, this measure is exact-dimensional and the almost everywhere value $d_V$ of the local scaling exponent is a smooth function of $V$, is strictly smaller than the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum, and converges to one as $V$ tends to zero. The proof relies on a new connection between the density of states measure of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian and the measure of maximal entropy for the Fibonacci trace map on the non-wandering set in the $V$-dependent invariant surface. This allows us to make a connection between the spectral problem at hand and the dimension theory of dynamical systems.

Limit-Periodic Schrödinger Operators in the Regime of Positive Lyapunov Exponents

We investigate the spectral properties of the discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators whose potentials are generated by continuous sampling along the orbits of a minimal translation of a Cantor group. We show that for given Cantor group and minimal translation, there is a dense set of continuous sampling functions such that the spectrum of the associated operators has zero Hausdorff dimension and all spectral measures are purely singular continuous. The associated Lyapunov exponent is a continuous strictly positive function of the energy. It is possible to include a coupling constant in the model and these results then hold for every non-zero value of the coupling constant.

Spectral and Quantum Dynamical Properties of the Weakly Coupled Fibonacci Hamiltonian

We consider the spectrum of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian for small values of the coupling constant. It is known that this set is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure. Here we study the limit, as the value of the coupling constant approaches zero, of its thickness and its Hausdorff dimension. We prove that the thickness tends to infinity and, consequently, the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum tends to one. We also show that at small coupling, all gaps allowed by the gap labeling theorem are open and the length of every gap tends to zero linearly. Moreover, for sufficiently small coupling, the sum of the spectrum with itself is an interval. This last result provides a rigorous explanation of a phenomenon for the Fibonacci square lattice discovered numerically by Even-Dar Mandel and Lifshitz. Finally, we provide explicit upper and lower bounds for the solutions to the difference equation and use them to study the spectral measures and the transport exponents.

Spectral Properties of Limit-Periodic Schrödinger Operators

We investigate the spectral properties of Schrödinger operators in l^2(Z) with limit-periodic potentials. The perspective we take was recently proposed by Avila and is based on regarding such potentials as generated by continuous sampling along the orbits of a minimal translation of a Cantor group. This point of view allows one to separate the base dynamics and the sampling function. We show that for any such base dynamics, the spectrum is a Cantor set of positive Lebesgue measure and purely absolutely continuous for a dense set of sampling functions, and it is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure and purely singular continuous for a dense G_δset of sampling functions.

A Continuum Version of the Kunz-Souillard Approach to Localization in One Dimension

We consider continuum one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with potentials that are given by a sum of a suitable background potential and an Anderson-type potential whose single-site distribution has a continuous and compactly supported density. We prove exponential decay of the expectation of the finite volume correlators, uniform in any compact energy region, and deduce from this dynamical and spectral localization. The proofs implement a continuum analog of the method Kunz and Souillard developed in 1980 to study discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with potentials of the form background plus random.

Opening Gaps in the Spectrum of Strictly Ergodic Schrödinger Operators

We consider Schrödinger operators with dynamically defined potentials arising from continuous sampling along orbits of strictly ergodic transformations. The Gap Labeling Theorem states that the possible gaps in the spectrum can be canonically labelled by an at most countable set defined purely in terms of the dynamics. Which labels actually appear depends on the choice of the sampling function; the missing labels are said to correspond to collapsed gaps. Here we show that for any collapsed gap, the sampling function may be continuously deformed so that the gap immediately opens. As a corollary, we conclude that for generic sampling functions, all gaps are open. The proof is based on the analysis of continuous $SL(2,R)$ cocycles, for which we obtain dynamical results of independent interest.

The Spectrum of the Weakly Coupled Fibonacci Hamiltonian

We consider the spectrum of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian for small values of the coupling constant. It is known that this set is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure. Here we study the limit, as the value of the coupling constant approaches zero, of its thickness and its Hausdorff dimension. We announce the following results and explain some key ideas that go into their proofs. The thickness tends to infinity and, consequently, the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum tends to one. Moreover, the length of every gap tends to zero linearly. Finally, for sufficiently small coupling, the sum of the spectrum with itself is an interval. Hyperbolicity of the Trace Map for the Weakly Coupled Fibonacci Hamiltonian

We consider the trace map associated with the Fibonacci Hamiltonian as a diffeomorphism on the invariant surface associated with a given coupling constant and prove that the non-wandering set of this map is hyperbolic if the coupling is sufficiently small. As a consequence, for these values of the coupling constant, the local and global Hausdorff dimension and the local and global box counting dimension of the spectrum of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian all coincide and are smooth functions of the coupling constant.

Quantum Dynamics via Complex Analysis Methods: General Upper Bounds Without Time-Averaging and Tight Lower Bounds for the Strongly Coupled Fibonacci Hamiltonian

We develop further the approach to upper and lower bounds in quantum dynamics via complex analysis methods which was introduced by us in a sequence of earlier papers. Here we derive upper bounds for non-time averaged outside probabilities and moments of the position operator from lower bounds for transfer matrices at complex energies. Moreover, for the time-averaged transport exponents, we present improved lower bounds in the special case of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian. These bounds lead to an optimal description of the time-averaged spreading rate of the fast part of the wavepacket in the large coupling limit. This provides the first example which demonstrates that the time-averaged spreading rates may exceed the upper box-counting dimension of the spectrum.

Absolute Continuity of the Integrated Density of States for the Almost Mathieu Operator with Non-Critical Coupling

We show that the integrated density of states of the almost Mathieu operator is absolutely continuous if and only if the coupling is non-critical. Generic Continuous Spectrum for Ergodic Schr"odinger Operators

We consider discrete Schr"odinger operators on the line with potentials generated by a minimal homeomorphism on a compact metric space and a continuous sampling function. We introduce the concepts of topological and metric repetition property. Assuming that the underlying dynamical system satisfies one of these repetition properties, we show using Gordon's Lemma that for a generic continuous sampling function, the associated Schr"odinger operators have no eigenvalues in a topological or metric sense, respectively. We present a number of applications, particularly to shifts and skew-shifts on the torus.

The Fractal Dimension of the Spectrum of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian

We study the spectrum of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian and prove upper and lower bounds for its fractal dimension in the large coupling regime. These bounds show that as $λ\to \infty$, $\dim (σ(H_λ)) \cdot \log λ$ converges to an explicit constant ($\approx 0.88137$). We also discuss consequences of these results for the rate of propagation of a wavepacket that evolves according to Schrödinger dynamics generated by the Fibonacci Hamiltonian.

The Repetition Property for Sequences on Tori Generated by Polynomials or Skew-Shifts

The repetition property of a sequence in a metric space, a notion introduced by us in an earlier paper, is of importance in the spectral analysis of ergodic Schrödinger operators. It may be used to exclude eigenvalues for such operators. In this paper we study the question of when a sequence on a torus that is generated by a polynomial or a skew-shift has the repetition property. This provides classes of ergodic Schrödinger operators with potentials generated by skew-shifts on tori that have, contrary to earlier belief, no eigenvalues.

Lyapunov Exponents and Spectral Analysis of Ergodic Schrödinger Operators: A Survey of Kotani Theory and its Applications

The absolutely continuous spectrum of an ergodic family of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators is completely determined by the Lyapunov exponent as shown by Ishii, Kotani and Pastur. Moreover, the part of the theory developed by Kotani gives powerful tools for proving the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum, the presence of absolutely continuous spectrum, and even the presence of purely absolutely continuous spectrum. We review these results and their recent applications to a number of problems: the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for rough potentials, the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for potentials defined by the doubling map on the circle, and the absence of singular spectrum for the subcritical almost Mathieu operator.

The Case of Critical Coupling in a Class of Unbounded Jacobi Matrices Exhibiting a First-Order Phase Transition

We consider a class of Jacobi matrices with unbounded coefficients. Bound States of Discrete Schroedinger Operators with Super-Critical Inverse Square Potentials

Schroedinger Operators With Few Bound States

We show that whole-line Schrödinger operators with finitely many bound states have no embedded singular spectrum. In contradistinction, we show that embedded singular spectrum is possible even when the bound states approach the essential spectrum exponentially fast. Strictly Ergodic Subshifts and Associated Operators

We consider ergodic families of Schrödinger operators over base dynamics given by strictly ergodic subshifts on finite alphabets. It is expected that the majority of these operators have purely singular continuous spectrum supported on a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure. These properties have indeed been established for large classes of operators of this type over the course of the last twenty years. We review the mechanisms leading to these results and briefly discuss analogues for CMV matrices.

Simon conjectured that the associated probability measures on the unit circle have essential support of zero Lebesgue measure. We prove this for a large class of subshifts, namely those satisfying Boshernitzan's condition. This is accomplished by relating the essential support to uniform convergence properties of the corresponding Szego cocycles.

Upper Bounds in Quantum Dynamics

We develop a general method to bound the spreading of an entire wavepacket under Schrödinger dynamics from above. This method derives upper bounds on time-averaged moments of the position operator from lower bounds on norms of transfer matrices at complex energies. This general result is applied to the Fibonacci operator. We find that at sufficiently large coupling, all transport exponents take values strictly between zero and one. This is the first rigorous result on anomalous transport. For quasi-periodic potentials associated with trigonometric polynomials, we prove that all lower transport exponents and, under a weak assumption on the frequency, all upper transport exponents vanish for all phases if the Lyapunov exponent is uniformly bounded away from zero. By a well-known result of Herman, this assumption always holds at sufficiently large coupling. For the particular case of the almost Mathieu operator, our result applies for coupling greater than two.

A Condition of Boshernitzan and Uniform Convergence in the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem

This paper is concerned with uniform convergence in the multiplicative ergodic theorem on aperiodic subshifts. If such a subshift satisfies a certain condition, originally introduced by Boshernitzan, every locally constant SL(2,R)-valued cocycle is uniform. As a consequence, the corresponding Schrödinger operators exhibit Cantor spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero. An investigation of Boshernitzan's condition then shows that these results cover all earlier results of this type and, moreover, provide various new ones. In particular, Boshernitzan's condition is shown to hold for almost all circle maps and almost all Arnoux-Rauzy subshifts.

Ergodic Potentials With a Discontinuous Sampling Function Are Non-Deterministic

We prove absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the whole line with certain ergodic potentials, $V_ω(n) = f(T^n(ω))$, where $T$ is an ergodic transformation acting on a space $Ω$ and $f: Ω\to \R$. The key hypothesis, however, is that $f$ is discontinuous. In particular, we are able to settle a conjecture of Aubry and Jitomirskaya--Mandel'shtam regarding potentials generated by irrational rotations on the torus. The proof relies on a theorem of Kotani, which shows that non-deterministic potentials give rise to operators that have no absolutely continuous spectrum.

Lower Transport Bounds for One-Dimensional Continuum Schrödinger Operators

We prove quantum dynamical lower bounds for one-dimensional continuum Schrödinger operators that possess critical energies for which there is slow growth of transfer matrix norms and a large class of compactly supported initial states. This general result is applied to a number of models, including the Bernoulli-Anderson model with a constant single-site potential.

Scaling Estimates for Solutions and Dynamical Lower Bounds on Wavepacket Spreading

We establish quantum dynamical lower bounds for discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators in situations where, in addition to power-law upper bounds on solutions corresponding to energies in the spectrum, one also has lower bounds following a scaling law. As a consequence, we obtain improved dynamical results for the Fibonacci Hamiltonian and related models.

Half-line Schrodinger Operators With No Bound States

We consider Schödinger operators on the half-line, both discrete and continuous, and show that the absence of bound states implies the absence of embedded singular spectrum. More precisely, in the discrete case we prove that if $Δ+ V$ has no spectrum outside of the interval $[-2,2]$, then it has purely absolutely continuous spectrum. In the continuum case we show that if both $-Δ+ V$ and $-Δ- V$ have no spectrum outside $[0,\infty)$, then both operators are purely absolutely continuous. These results extend to operators with finitely many bound states.

Necessary and Sufficient Conditions in the Spectral Theory of Jacobi Matrices and Schrödinger Operators

We announce three results in the theory of Jacobi matrices and Schrödinger operators. First, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a measure to be the spectral measure of a Schrödinger operator $-\f{d^2}{dx^2} +V(x)$ on $L^2 (0,\infty)$ with $V\in L^2 (0,\infty)$ and $u(0)=0$ boundary condition. Second, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the Jacobi parameters for the associated orthogonal polynomials to have Szegő asymptotics. Finally, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions on a measure to be the spectral measure of a Jacobi matrix with exponential decay at a given rate.

Power-law bounds on transfer matrices and quantum dynamics in one dimension II

We establish quantum dynamical lower bounds for a number of discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators. These dynamical bounds are derived from power-law upper bounds on the norms of transfer matrices. We develop further the approach from part I and study many examples. Particular focus is put on models with finitely or at most countably many exceptional energies for which one can prove power-law bounds on transfer matrices. The models discussed in this paper include substitution models, Sturmian models, a hierarchical model, the prime model, and a class of moderately sparse potentials.

Arnoux-Rauzy Subshifts: Linear Recurrence, Powers, and Palindromes

We consider Arnoux-Rauzy subshifts $X$ and study various combinatorial questions: When is $X$ linearly recurrent? What is the maximal power occurring in $X$? What is the number of palindromes of a given length occurring in $X$? We present applications of our combinatorial results to the spectral theory of discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with potentials given by Arnoux-Rauzy sequences.

Bound States and the Szego Condition for Jacobi Matrices and Schrodinger Operators

For Jacobi matrices with a_n = 1+(-1)^n alpha n^{-gamma}, b_n = (-1)^n beta n^{-gamma}, we study bound states and the SzegHo condition. We provide a new proof of Nevai's result that if gamma > 1/2, the Szego condition holds, which works also if one replaces (-1)^n by cos(mu n). We show that if alpha = 0, beta not equal to 0, and gamma < 1/2, the Szego condition fails. We also show that if gamma = 1, alpha and beta are small enough (beta^2 + 8 alpha^2 < 1/24 will do), then the Jacobi matrix has finitely many bound states (for alpha = 0, beta large, it has infinitely many).

Localization for Discrete One Dimensional Random Word Models

We consider Schrödinger operators in $\ell^2(\Z)$ whose potentials are obtained by randomly concatenating words from an underlying set $\mathcal{W}$ according to some probability measure $ν$ on $\mathcal{W}$. Our assumptions allow us to consider models with local correlations, such as the random dimer model or, more generally, random polymer models. We prove spectral localization and, away from a finite set of exceptional energies, dynamical localization for such models. These results are obtained by employing scattering theoretic methods together with Furstenberg's theorem to verify the necessary input to perform a multiscale analysis.

Log-dimensional spectral properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the whole line and establish a criterion for continuity of spectral measures with respect to $\log$-Hausdorff measures. We apply this result to operators with Sturmian potentials and thereby prove logarithmic quantum dynamical lower bounds for all coupling constants and almost all rotation numbers, uniformly in the phase.

Variational Estimates for Discrete Schrödinger Operators with Potentials of Indefinite Sign

Let $H$ be a one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator. We prove that if $σ_{\ess} (H)\subset [-2,2]$, then $H-H_0$ is compact and $σ_{\ess}(H)=[-2,2]$. We also prove that if $H_0 + \frac14 V^2$ has at least one bound state, then the same is true for $H_0 +V$. Further, if $H_0 + \frac14 V^2$ has infinitely many bound states, then so does $H_0 +V$. Consequences include the fact that for decaying potential $V$ with $\liminf_{|n|\to\infty} |nV(n)| > 1$, $H_0 +V$ has infinitely many bound states; the signs of $V$ are irrelevant. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed.

Lyapunov exponents in continuum Bernoulli-Anderson models

We study one-dimensional, continuum Bernoulli-Anderson models with general single-site potentials and prove positivity of the Lyapunov exponent away from a discrete set of critical energies. The proof is based on Fürstenberg's Theorem. The set of critical energies is described explicitly in terms of the transmission and reflection coefficients for scattering at the single-site potential. In examples we discuss the asymptotic behavior of generalized eigenfunctions at critical energies.

Uniform spectral properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals, IV. Quasi-Sturmian potentials

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with quasi-Sturmian potentials. We present a new approach to the trace map dynamical system which is independent of the initial conditions and establish a characterization of the spectrum in terms of bounded trace map orbits. Using this, it is shown that the operators have purely singular continuous spectrum and their spectrum is a Cantor set of Lebesgue measure zero. We also exhibit a subclass having purely $α$-continuous spectrum. All these results hold uniformly on the hull generated by a given potential.

A generalization of Gordon's theorem and applications to quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators

We prove a criterion for absence of eigenvalues for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators. This criterion can be regarded as an $L^1$-version of Gordon's theorem and it has a broader range of application. Absence of eigenvalues is then established for quasiperiodic potentials generated by Liouville frequencies and various types of functions such as step functions, Hölder continuous functions and functions with power-type singularities. The proof is based on Gronwall-type a priori estimates for solutions of Schrödinger equations.

Linear repetitivity, I. Uniform subadditive ergodic theorems and applications

This paper is concerned with the concept of linear repetitivity in the theory of tilings. We prove a general uniform subadditive ergodic theorem for linearly repetitive tilings. This theorem unifies and extends various known (sub)additive ergodic theorems on tilings. The results of this paper can be applied in the study of both random operators and lattice gas models on tilings.

Localization for One Dimensional, Continuum, Bernoulli-Anderson Models

We use scattering theoretic methods to prove strong dynamical and exponential localization for one dimensional, continuum, Anderson-type models with singular distributions; in particular the case of a Bernoulli distribution is covered. The operators we consider model alloys composed of at least two distinct types of randomly dispersed atoms. Our main tools are the reflection and transmission coefficients for compactly supported single site perturbations of a periodic background which we use to verify the necessary hypotheses of multi-scale analysis. We show that non-reflectionless single sites lead to a discrete set of exceptional energies away from which localization occurs.

Reflection symmetries of almost periodic functions

We study global reflection symmetries of almost periodic functions. In the non-limit periodic case, we establish an upper bound on the Haar measure of the set of those elements in the hull which are almost symmetric about the origin. As an application of this result we prove that in the non-limit periodic case, the criterion of Jitomirskaya and Simon ensuring absence of eigenvalues for almost periodic Schrödinger operators is only applicable on a set of zero Haar measure. We complement this by giving examples of limit periodic functions where the Jitomirskaya-Simon criterion can be applied to every element of the hull.
