Spinon continuum in the Heisenberg quantum chain compound Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of $\sim22$ meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V$^{4+}$ and nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at $T_N\sim 5.3$ K while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ as a host of weakly coupled $S = 1/2$ chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of $\sim7.1$(1) meV.

Electronic structure, magnetic properties and pairing tendencies of the copper-based honeycomb lattice Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$

Spin-$1/2$ chains with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings have attracted considerable interest due to the topological character of their spin excitations. Here, using density functional theory and density matrix renormalization group methods, we have systematically studied the dimerized chain system Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$. Near the Fermi level, the dominant states are mainly contributed by the Cu $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals highly hybridized with the O $2p$ orbitals in the nonmagnetic phase, leading to an "effective" single-orbital low-energy model. Furthermore, the bandwidth of the Cu $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ states is small ($\sim 0.8$ eV), suggesting that electronic correlations will strongly affect this system. By introducing such electronic correlations, we found this system is a Mott insulator. Moreover, by calculating the magnetic exchange interactions ($J_1$, $J_2$ and $J_3$), we explained the size and sign of the exchange interactions in Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$, in agreement with neutron experiments. In addition, we constructed a single-orbital Hubbard model for this dimerized chain system, where the quantum fluctuations are taken into account. Both AFM and FM coupling ($\uparrow$-$\downarrow$-$\downarrow$-$\uparrow$) along the chain were found in our DMRG and Lanczos calculations, in agreement with DFT and neutron results. We also calculated the hole pairing binding energy $ΔE$ which becomes negative at Hubbard $U \sim 11$ eV, indicating incipient pairing tendencies. Finally, we also looked at various cases of hole doping that always exhibit tight pairs. Thus, we believe our results for Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$ could provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this dimerized chain system, such as short-range magnetic coupling, doping effects, and possible pairing tendencies.

Gapless to gapless phase transitions in quantum spin chains

We investigate spin chains with bilinear-biquadratic (BLBQ) spin interactions as a function of an applied magnetic field $h$. At the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland (ULS) critical point we find a gapless to gapless transition revealed by the dynamical structure factor $S(q,ω)$ as a function of $h$. At $h=0$, the envelope of the lowest energy excitations goes soft at {\it two points} $q_1=2π/3$ and $q_2=4π/3$, dubbed the phase A. With increasing field, the spectral peaks at each of the gapless points bifurcate, making in total {\it four} soft modes, and combine to form a new set of excitations that soften at a {\it single} point $q=π$ at $h_{c1}\approx 0.94$. Beyond $h_{c1}$ the system enters another gapless B-phase until the transition at $h_{c2}=4$ to the fully polarized phase. We compare the ULS model results with those for the AKLT model as a representative of gapped Haldane phase. We explain the mechanism of the gapless to gapless transition in the ULS model using its conserved charges and a spinon band picture. We also discuss the universality of central charges of the BLBQ family of models subjected to a magnetic field.

Magnetic excitations, non-classicality and quantum wake spin dynamics in the Hubbard chain

Recent work has demonstrated that quantum Fisher information (QFI), a witness of multipartite entanglement, and magnetic Van Hove correlations $G(r,t)$, a probe of local real-space real-time spin dynamics, can be successfully extracted from inelastic neutron scattering on spin systems through accurate measurements of the dynamical spin structure factor $S(k,ω)$. Here we apply theoretically these ideas to the half-filled Hubbard chain with nearest-neighbor hopping, away from the strong-coupling limit. This model has nontrivial redistribution of spectral weight in $S(k,ω)$ going from the non-interacting limit ($U=0$) to strong coupling ($U\rightarrow \infty$), where it reduces to the Heisenberg quantum spin chain. We use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) to find $S(k,ω)$, from which QFI is then calculated. We find that QFI grows with $U$. With realistic energy resolution it becomes capable of witnessing bipartite entanglement above $U=2.5$ (in units of the hopping), where it also changes slope. This point is also proximate to slope changes of the bandwidth $W(U)$ and the half-chain von Neumann entanglement entropy. We compute $G(r,t)$ by Fourier-transforming $S(k,ω)$. The results indicate a crossover in the short-time short-distance dynamics at low $U$ characterized by ferromagnetic lightcone wavefronts, to a Heisenberg-like behavior at large $U$ featuring antiferromagnetic lightcones and spatially period-doubled antiferromagnetism. We find this crossover has largely been completed by $U=3$. Our results thus provide evidence that, in several aspects, the strong-coupling limit of the Hubbard chain is reached qualitatively already at a relatively modest interaction strength. We discuss experimental candidates for observing the $G(r,t)$ dynamics found at low $U$.

Strongly anisotropic electronic and magnetic structures in oxide dichlorides RuOCl$_2$ and OsOCl$_2$

Here, using density functional theory and density matrix renormalization group methods, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of RuOCl$_2$ and OsOCl$_2$ with $d^4$ electronic configurations. Different from a previous study using VOI$_2$ with $d^1$ configuration, these systems with $4d^4$ or $5d^4$ do not exhibit a ferroelectric instability along the $a$-axis. Due to the fully-occupied $d_{xy}$ orbital in RuOCl$_2$ and OsOCl$_2$, the Peierls instability distortion disappears along the $b$-axis, leading to an undistorted I${\rm mmm}$ phase (No. 71). Furthermore, we observe strongly anisotropic electronic and magnetic structures along the $a$-axis. The large crystal-field splitting energy (between $d_{xz/yz}$ and $d_{xy}$ orbitals) and large hopping between nearest-neighbor Ru and Os atoms suppresses the spin-orbital effect in $M$OCl$_2$ ($M$ = Ru or Os) with electronic density $n = 4$, resulting in a spin-1 system instead of a $J = 0$ singlet ground state. Moreover, we find staggered antiferromagnetic order with $π$ wavevector along the $M$-O chain direction ($a$-axis) while the magnetic coupling along the $b$-axis is weak. Based on Wannier functions from first-principles calculations, we calculated the relevant hopping amplitudes and crystal-field splitting energies of the $t_{2g}$ orbitals for the Os atoms to construct a multi-orbital Hubbard model for the $M$-O chains. Staggered AFM with $\uparrow$-$\downarrow$-$\uparrow$-$\downarrow$ spin structure dominates in our DMRG calculations, in agreement with DFT calculations.

Magnetization dynamics fingerprints of an excitonic condensate $t_{2g}^{4}$ magnet

The competition between spin-orbit coupling $λ$ and electron-electron interaction $U$ leads to a plethora of novel states of matter, extensively studied in the context of $t_{2g}^4$ and $t_{2g}^5$ materials, such as ruthenates and iridates. Excitonic magnets -- the antiferromagnetic state of bounded electron-hole pairs -- is a prominent example of phenomena driven by those competing energy scales. Interestingly, recent theoretical studies predicted that excitonic magnets can be found in the ground-state of spin-orbit-coupled $t_{2g}^4$ Hubbard models. Here, we present a detailed computational study of the magnetic excitations in that excitonic magnet, employing one-dimensional chains (via density matrix renormalization group) and small two-dimensional clusters (via Lanczos). Specifically, first we show that the low-energy spectrum is dominated by a dispersive (acoustic) magnonic mode, with extra features arising from the $λ=0$ state in the phase diagram. Second, and more importantly, we found a novel magnetic excitation forming a high-energy optical mode with the highest intensity at wavevector $q\to 0$. In the excitonic condensation regime at large $U$, we also have found a novel high-energy $π$-mode composed solely of orbital excitations. These unique fingerprints of the $t_{2g}^4$ excitonic magnet are important in the analysis of neutron and RIXS experiments.

BCS-BEC crossover in a $(t_{2g})^4$ Excitonic Magnet

The condensation of spin-orbit-induced excitons in $(t_{2g})^4$ electronic systems is attracting considerable attention. In the large Hubbard U limit, antiferromagnetism was proposed to emerge from the Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of triplons ($J_{\textrm{eff}} = 1$). In this publication, we show that even for the weak and intermediate U regimes, the spin-orbit exciton condensation is possible leading also to staggered magnetic order. The canonical electron-hole excitations (excitons) transform into local triplon excitations at large U , and this BEC strong coupling regime is smoothly connected to the intermediate U excitonic insulator region. We solved the degenerate three-orbital Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling ($λ$) in one-dimensional geometry using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, while in two-dimensional square clusters we use the Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA). Employing these techniques, we provide the full $λ$ vs U phase diagrams for both one- and two- dimensional lattices. Our main result is that at the intermediate Hubbard U region of our focus, increasing $λ$ at fixed U the system transitions from an incommensurate spin-density-wave metal to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) excitonic insulator, with coherence length r coh of O(a) and O(10a) in 1d and 2d, respectively, with a the lattice spacing. Further increasing $λ$, the system eventually crosses over to the BEC limit (with r coh << a).

Emergence of Superconductivity in Doped Multiorbital Hubbard Chains

We introduce a variational state for one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard models that intuitively explains the recent computational discovery of pairing in these systems when hole doped. Our Ansatz is an optimized linear superposition of Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence bond states, rendering the combination a valence bond liquid dubbed Orbital Resonant Valence Bond. We show that the undoped (one electron/orbital) quantum state of two sites coupled into a global spin singlet is exactly written employing only spin-1/2 singlets linking orbitals at nearest-neighbor sites. Generalizing to longer chains defines our variational state visualized geometrically expressing our chain as a two-leg ladder, with one orbital per leg. As in Anderson's resonating valence-bond state, our undoped variational state contains preformed singlet pairs that via doping become mobile leading to superconductivity. Doped real materials with one-dimensional substructures, two near-degenerate orbitals, and intermediate Hubbard U/W strengths -- W the carrier's bandwidth -- could realize spin-singlet pairing if on-site anisotropies are small. If these anisotropies are robust, spin-triplet pairing emerges.

Origin of the Magnetic and Orbital ordering in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$

Motivated by recent experimental progress in transition metal oxides with the K$_2$NiF$_4$ structure, we investigate the magnetic and orbital ordering in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$. Using first principles calculations, first we derive a three-orbital Hubbard model, which reproduces the {\it ab initio} band structure near the Fermi level. The unique reverse splitting of $t_{2g}$ orbitals in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$, with the $3d^2$ electronic configuration for the Cr$^{4+}$ oxidation state, opens up the possibility of orbital ordering in this material. Using real-space Hartree-Fock for multi-orbital systems, we constructed the ground-state phase diagram for the two-dimensional compound $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$. We found stable ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, antiferro-orbital, and staggered orbital stripe ordering in robust regions of the phase diagram. Furthermore, using the density matrix renormalization group method for two-leg ladders with the realistic hopping parameters of $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$, we explore magnetic and orbital ordering for experimentally relevant interaction parameters. Again, we find a clear signature of antiferromagnetic spin ordering along with antiferro-orbital ordering at moderate to large Hubbard interaction strength. We also explore the orbital-resolved density of states with Lanczos, predicting insulating behavior for the compound $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$, in agreement with experiments. Finally, an intuitive understanding of the results is provided based on a hierarchy between orbitals, with $d_{xy}$ driving the spin order, while electronic repulsion and the effective one dimensionality of the movement within the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals driving the orbital order.

Prediction of exotic magnetic states in the alkali metal quasi-one-dimensional iron selenide compound Na$_2$FeSe$_2$

The magnetic and electronic phase diagram of a model for the quasi-one-dimensional alkali metal iron selenide compound Na$_2$FeSe$_2$ is presented. The novelty of this material is that the valence of iron is Fe$^{2+}$ contrary to most other iron-chain compounds with valence Fe$^{3+}$. Using first-principles techniques, we developed a three-orbital tight-binding model that reproduces the {\it ab initio} band structure near the Fermi level. Including Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group and Lanczos methods, we constructed the ground state phase diagram. A robust region where the block state $\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ is stabilized was unveiled. The analog state in iron ladders, employing 2$\times$2 ferromagnetic blocks, is by now well-established, but in chains a block magnetic order has not been observed yet in real materials. The phase diagram also contains a large region of canonical staggered spin order $\uparrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow \uparrow$ at very large Hubbard repulsion. At the block to staggered transition region, a novel phase is stabilized with a mixture of both states: an inhomogeneous orbital-selective charge density wave with the exotic spin configuration $\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow$. Our predictions for Na$_2$FeSe$_2$ may guide crystal growers and neutron scattering experimentalists towards the realization of block states in one-dimensional iron-selenide chain materials.

Magnetic properties and pairing tendencies of the iron-based superconducting ladder BaFe$_2$S$_3$: combined ab initio and density matrix renormalization group study

The recent discovery of superconductivity under high pressure in the two-leg ladder compound BaFe$_2$S$_3$ [H. Takahashi et al., Nature Materials 14, 1008 (2015)] opens a broad avenue of research, because it represents the first report of pairing tendencies in a quasi one-dimensional iron-based high critical temperature superconductor. Similarly as in the case of the cuprates, ladders and chains can be far more accurately studied using many-body techniques and model Hamiltonians than their layered counterparts, particularly if several orbitals are active. In this publication, we derive a two-orbital Hubbard model from first principles that describes individual ladders of BaFe$_2$S$_3$. The model is studied with the density matrix renormalization group. These first reported results are exciting for two reasons: (i) at half-filling, ferromagnetic order emerges as the dominant magnetic pattern along the rungs of the ladder, and antiferromagnetic order along the legs, in excellent agreement with neutron experiments; (ii) pairs form in the strong coupling regime, as found by studying the binding energy of two holes doped on the half-filled system. In addition, Orbital Selective Mott Phase characteristics develop with doping, with only one Wannier orbital receiving the hole carriers while the other remains half-filled. These results suggest that the analysis of models for iron-based two-leg ladders could clarify the origin of pairing tendencies and other exotic properties of iron-based high critical temperature superconductors.

On the security defects of an image encryption scheme

This paper studies the security of a recently-proposed chaos-based image encryption scheme, and points out the following problems: 1) there exist a number of invalid keys and weak keys, and some keys are partially equivalent for encryption/decryption; 2) given one chosen plain-image, a subkey $K_{10}$ can be guessed with a smaller computational complexity than that of the simple brute-force attack; 3) given at most 128 chosen plain-images, a chosen-plaintext attack can possibly break the following part of the secret key: $\{K_i\bmod 128\}_{i=4}^{10}$, which works very well when $K_{10}$ is not too large; 4) when $K_{10}$ is relatively small, a known-plaintext attack can be carried out with only one known plain-image to recover some visual information of any other plain-images encrypted by the same key.

Orbital-selective Mott phases of a one-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model studied using computational techniques

A recently introduced one-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model displays orbital-selective Mott phases with exotic spin arrangements such as spin block states [J. Rincón {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{112}, 106405 (2014)]. In this publication we show that the Constrained-Path Quantum Monte Carlo (CPQMC) technique can accurately reproduce the phase diagram of this multiorbital one-dimensional model, paving the way to future CPQMC studies in systems with more challenging geometries, such as ladders and planes. The success of this approach relies on using the Hartree-Fock technique to prepare the trial states needed in CPQMC. We also study a simplified version of the model where the pair-hopping term is neglected and the Hund coupling is restricted to its Ising component. The corresponding phase diagrams are shown to be only mildly affected by the absence of these technically difficult-to-implement terms. This is confirmed by additional Density Matrix Renormalization Group and Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo calculations carried out for the same simplified model, with the latter displaying only mild Fermion sign problems. We conclude that these methods are able to capture quantitatively the rich physics of the several orbital-selective Mott phases (OSMP) displayed by this model, thus enabling computational studies of the OSMP regime in higher dimensions, beyond static or dynamic mean field approximations.

Exotic magnetic order in the orbital-selective Mott regime of multiorbital systems

The orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) of multiorbital Hubbard models has been extensively analyzed before using static and dynamical mean-field approximations. In parallel, the properties of Block states (antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic spin clusters) in Fe-based superconductors have also been much discussed. The present effort uses numerically exact techniques in one-dimensional systems to report the observation of Block states within the OSMP regime, connecting two seemingly independent areas of research, and providing analogies with the physics of Double-Exchange models.

Quantum phase transition between orbital-selective Mott states in Hund's metals

We report a quantum phase transition between orbital-selective Mott states, with different localized orbitals, in a Hund's metals model. Using the density matrix renormalization group, the phase diagram is constructed varying the electronic density and Hubbard $U$, at robust Hund's coupling. We demonstrate that this transition is preempted by charge fluctuations and the emergence of free spinless fermions, as opposed to the magnetically-driven Mott transition. The Luttinger correlation exponent is shown to have a universal value in the strong-coupling phase, whereas it is interaction dependent at intermediate couplings. At weak coupling we find a second transition from a normal metal to the intermediate-coupling phase.

Anisotropy of Electrical Transport in Pnictide Superconductors Studied Using Monte Carlo Simulations of the Spin-Fermion Model

The undoped three-orbital spin fermion model for the Fe-based superconductors is studied via Monte Carlo techniques in two-dimensional clusters. At low temperatures, the magnetic and one-particle spectral properties are in good agreement with neutron and photoemission experiments. Our most important results are the resistance vs. temperature curves that display all the features experimentally observed in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ detwinned single crystals (under uniaxial stress), including a low-temperature anisotropy between the two directions followed by a peak at the magnetic ordering temperature, here induced by short-range spin order and concomitant Fermi Surface orbital order.

Application of Gray codes to the study of the theory of symbolic dynamics of unimodal maps

In this paper we provide a closed mathematical formulation of our previous results in the field of symbolic dynamics of unimodal maps. This being the case, we discuss the classical theory of applied symbolic dynamics for unimodal maps and its reinterpretation using Gray codes. This connection was previously emphasized but no explicit mathematical proof was provided. The work described in this paper not only contributes to the integration of the different interpretations of symbolic dynamics of unimodal maps, it also points out some inaccuracies that exist in previous works.

Dynamics of doublon-holon pairs in Hubbard two-leg ladders

The dynamics of holon-doublon pairs is studied in Hubbard two-leg ladders using the time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group method. We find that the geometry of the two-leg ladder, that is qualitatively different from a one-dimensional chain due to the presence of a spin-gap, strongly affects the propagation of a doublon-holon pair. Two distinct regimes are identified. For weak inter-leg coupling, the results are qualitatively similar to the case of the propagation previously reported in Hubbard chains, with only a renormalization of parameters. More interesting is the case of strong inter-leg coupling where substantial differences arise, particularly regarding the double occupancy and properties of the excitations such as the doublon speed. Our results suggest a connection between the presence of a spin gap and qualitative changes in the doublon speed, indicating a weak coupling between the doublon to magnetic excitations.

Magnetic States of the Two-Leg Ladder Alkali Metal Iron Selenides $A$Fe$_2$Se$_3$

Recent neutron scattering experiments addressing the magnetic state of the two-leg ladder selenide compound BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ have unveiled a dominant spin arrangement involving ferromagnetically ordered 2$\times$2 iron-superblocks, that are antiferromagnetically coupled among them (the "block-AFM" state). Using the electronic five-orbital Hubbard model, first principles techniques to calculate the electronic hopping amplitudes between irons, and the real-space Hartree-Fock approximation to handle the many-body effects, here it is shown that the exotic block-AFM state is indeed stable at realistic electronic densities close to $n \sim 6.0$. Another state (the "CX" state) with parallel spins along the rungs and antiparallel along the legs of the ladders is close in energy. This state becomes stable in other portions of the phase diagrams, such as with hole doping, as also found experimentally via neutron scattering applied to KFe$_2$Se$_3$. In addition, the present study unveils other competing magnetic phases that could be experimentally stabilized varying either $n$ chemically or the electronic bandwidth by pressure. Similar results were obtained using two-orbital models, studied here via Lanczos and DMRG techniques. A comparison of the results obtained with the realistic selenides hoppings amplitudes for BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ against those found using the hopping amplitudes for pnictides reveals several qualitative similarities, particularly at intermediate and large Hubbard couplings.

Electron-lattice coupling and partial nesting as the origin of Fermi-Arcs in manganites

A tight-binding model for eg electrons coupled to Jahn-Teller lattice distortions is studied via unbiased Monte- Carlo simulations. By focusing on the periodicity of the Jahn Teller distortions, and the one-particle spectral function, our results clarify the physical origin of the Fermi-arcs phase observed in layered manganites. In a range of parameters where no broken symmetry phase exists, the nearly nested Fermi surface favors certain correlations between Jahn Teller distortions. The spectral weight near the Brillouin zone edge is suppressed, leading to the pseudogap in the density of states. We discuss the stability of this phase as a function of temperature and coupling strength for different hole dopings.

Unveiling First Order CMR Transitions in the Two-Orbital Model for Manganites

Large scale Monte Carlo simulation results for the two-orbital model for manganites, including Jahn-Teller lattice distortions, are here presented. At hole density x=1/4 and in the vicinity of the region of competition between the ferromagnetic metallic and spin-charge-orbital ordered insulating phases, the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) phenomenon is observed with a magnetoresistance ratio ~10,000% Our main result is that this CMR transition is found to be of first order in some portions of the phase diagram, in agreement with early results from neutron scattering, specific heat, and magnetization, thus solving a notorious discrepancy between experiments and previous theoretical studies. The first-order characteristics of the transition survive, and are actually enhanced, when weak quenched disorder is introduced.

Estimation of the control parameter from symbolic sequences: Unimodal maps with variable critical point

The work described in this paper can be interpreted as an application of the order patterns of symbolic dynamics when dealing with unimodal maps. Specifically, it is shown how Gray codes can be used to estimate the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the order patterns of parametric unimodal maps. Furthermore, these PDFs depend on the value of the parameter, what eventually provides a handle to estimate the parameter value from symbolic sequences (in form of Gray codes), even when the critical point depends on the parameter.

Cryptanalysis of an image encryption scheme based on a new total shuffling algorithm

Chaotic systems have been broadly exploited through the last two decades to build encryption methods. Recently, two new image encryption schemes have been proposed, where the encryption process involves a permutation operation and an XOR-like transformation of the shuffled pixels, which are controlled by three chaotic systems. This paper discusses some defects of the schemes and how to break them with a chosen-plaintext attack.
