A kinetic description of the body size distributions of species

In this paper, by resorting to classical methods of statistical mechanics, we build a kinetic model able to reproduce the observed statistical weight distribution of many diverse species. The kinetic description of the time variations of the weight distribution is based on elementary interactions that describe in a qualitative and quantitative way successive evolutionary updates, and determine explicit equilibrium distributions. Numerical fittings on mammalian eutherians of the order Chiroptera population illustrates the effectiveness of the approach.

Effects of vaccination efficacy on wealth distribution in kinetic epidemic models

The spreading of Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the close link between economics and health in the context of emergency management. A widespread vaccination campaign is considered the main tool to contain the economic consequences. This paper will focus, at the level of wealth distribution modelling, on the economic improvements induced by the vaccination campaign in terms of its effectiveness rate. The economic trend during the pandemic is evaluated resorting to a mathematical model joining a classical compartmental model including vaccinated individuals with a kinetic model of wealth distribution based on binary wealth exchanges. The interplay between wealth exchanges and the progress of the infectious disease is realized by assuming on the one hand that individuals in different compartments act differently in the economic process and on the other hand that the epidemic affects risk in economic transactions. Using the mathematical tools of kinetic theory, it is possible to identify the equilibrium states of the system and the formation of inequalities due to the pandemic in the wealth distribution of the population. Numerical experiments highlight the importance of the vaccination campaign and its positive effects in reducing economic inequalities in the multi-agent society.

Social climbing and Amoroso distribution

We introduce a class of one-dimensional linear kinetic equations of Boltzmann and Fokker--Planck type, describing the dynamics of individuals of a multi-agent society questing for high status in the social hierarchy. At the Boltzmann level, the microscopic variation of the status of agents around a universal desired target, is built up introducing as main criterion for the change of status a suitable value function in the spirit of the prospect theory of Kahneman and Twersky. In the asymptotics of grazing interactions, the solution density of the Boltzmann type kinetic equation is shown to converge towards the solution of a Fokker--Planck type equation with variable coefficients of diffusion and drift, characterized by the mathematical properties of the value function. The steady states of the statistical distribution of the social status predicted by the Fokker--Planck equations belong to the class of Amoroso distributions with Pareto tails, which correspond to the emergence of a \emph{social elite}. The details of the microscopic kinetic interaction allow to clarify the meaning of the various parameters characterizing the resulting equilibrium. Numerical results then show that the steady state of the underlying kinetic equation is close to Amoroso distribution even in an intermediate regime in which interactions are not grazing.

The Equivalence of Fourier-based and Wasserstein Metrics on Imaging Problems

We investigate properties of some extensions of a class of Fourier-based probability metrics, originally introduced to study convergence to equilibrium for the solution to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation. At difference with the original one, the new Fourier-based metrics are well-defined also for probability distributions with different centers of mass, and for discrete probability measures supported over a regular grid. Among other properties, it is shown that, in the discrete setting, these new Fourier-based metrics are equivalent either to the Euclidean-Wasserstein distance $W_2$, or to the Kantorovich-Wasserstein distance $W_1$, with explicit constants of equivalence. Numerical results then show that in benchmark problems of image processing, Fourier metrics provide a better runtime with respect to Wasserstein ones.

Kinetic modeling of alcohol consumption

In most countries, alcohol consumption distributions have been shown to possess universal features. Their unimodal right-skewed shape is usually modeled in terms of the Lognormal distribution, which is easy to fit, test, and modify. However, empirical distributions often deviate considerably from the Lognormal model, and both Gamma and Weibull distributions appear to better describe the survey data. In this paper we explain the appearance of these distributions by means of classical methods of kinetic theory of multi-agent systems. The microscopic variation of alcohol consumption of agents around a universal \emph{social} accepted value of consumption, is built up introducing as main criterion for consumption a suitable value function in the spirit of the prospect theory of Kahneman and Twersky. The mathematical properties of the value function then determine the unique macroscopic equilibrium which results to be a generalized Gamma distribution. The modeling of the microscopic kinetic interaction allows to clarify the meaning of the various parameters characterizing the generalized Gamma equilibrium.

Kinetic modelling of multiple interactions in socio-economic systems

Unlike the classical kinetic theory of rarefied gases, where microscopic interactions among gas molecules are described as binary collisions, the modelling of socio-economic phenomena in a multi-agent system naturally requires to consider, in various situations, multiple interactions among the individuals. In this paper, we collect and discuss some examples related to economic and gambling activities. In particular, we focus on a linearisation strategy of the multiple interactions, which greatly simplifies the kinetic description of such systems while maintaining all their essential aggregate features, including the equilibrium distributions.

Kinetic and mean field description of Gibrat's law

We introduce and analyze a linear kinetic model that describes the evolution of the probability density of the number of firms in a society, in which the microscopic rate of change obeys to the so-called law of proportional effect proposed by Gibrat. Despite its apparent simplicity, the possible mean field limits of the kinetic model are varied. In some cases, the asymptotic limit can be described by a first-order partial differential equation. In other cases, the mean field equation is a linear diffusion with a non constant diffusion coefficient that models also the geometric Brownian motion and can be studied analytically. In this case, it is shown that the large-time behavior of the solution is represented, for a large class of initial data, by a lognormal distribution with constant mean value and variance increasing exponentially in time at a precise rate. The relationship between the kinetic and the diffusion models allow to introduce an easy-to- implement expression for computing the Fourier transform of the lognormal distribution.

Recent advances in opinion modeling: control and social influence

We survey some recent developments on the mathematical modeling of opinion dynamics. After an introduction on opinion modeling through interacting multi-agent systems described by partial differential equations of kinetic type, we focus our attention on two major advancements: optimal control of opinion formation and influence of additional social aspects, like conviction and number of connections in social networks, which modify the agents' role in the opinion exchange process.

Best matching Barenblatt profiles are delayed

The growth of the second moments of the solutions of fast diffusion equations is asymptotically governed by the behavior of self-similar solutions. However, at next order, there is a correction term which amounts to a delay depending on the nonlinearity and on a distance of the initial data to the set of self-similar Barenblatt solutions. This distance can be measured in terms of a relative entropy to the best matching Barenblatt profile. This best matching Barenblatt function determines a scale. In new variables based on this scale, which are given by a self-similar change of variables if and only if the initial datum is one of the Barenblatt profiles, the typical scale is monotone and has a li

Entropy inequalities for stable densities and strengthened central limit theorems

We consider the central limit theorem for stable laws in the case of the standardized sum of independent and identically distributed random variables with regular probability density function. By showing decay of different entropy functionals along the sequence we prove convergence with explicit rate in various norms to a Lévy centered density of parameter $λ>1$ . This introduces a new information-theoretic approach to the central limit theorem for stable laws, in which the main argument is shown to be the relative fractional Fisher information, recently introduced by the same author (cf. arXiv 1504.07057). In particular, it is proven that, with respect to the relative fractional Fisher information, the Lévy density satisfies an analogous of the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, which allows to pass from the monotonicity and decay to zero of the relative fractional Fisher information in the standardized sum to the decay to zero in relative entropy with an explicit decay rate.

Kinetic models of opinion formation in the presence of personal conviction

We consider a nonlinear kinetic equation of Boltzmann type which takes into account the influence of conviction during the formation of opinion in a system of agents which interact through the binary exchanges introduced in [G. Toscani, Commun. Math. Sci. 4, 481 (2006)]. The original exchange mechanism, which is based on the human tendency to compromise and change of opinion through self-thinking, is here modified in the parameters of the compromise and diffusion terms, which now are assumed to depend on the personal degree of conviction. The numerical simulations show that the presence of conviction has the potential to break symmetry, and to produce clusters of opinions. The model is partially inspired by the recent work [L. Pareschi, G. Toscani, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 372, 20130396 (2014)], in which the role of knowledge in the formation of wealth distribution has been investigated.

Mean field dynamics of collisional processes with duplication, loss and copy

In this paper we introduce and discuss kinetic equations for the evolution of the probability distribution of the number of particles in a population subject to binary interactions. The microscopic binary law of interaction is assumed to be dependent on fixed-in-time random parameters which describe both birth and death of particles, and the migration rule. These assumptions lead to a Boltzmann-type equation that in the case in which the mean number of the population is preserved, can be fully studied, by obtaining in some case the analytic description of the steady profile. In all cases, however, a simpler kinetic description can be derived, by considering the limit of quasi-invariant interactions. This procedure allows to describe the evolution process in terms of a linear kinetic transport-type equation. Among the various processes that can be described in this way, one recognizes the Lea-Coulson model of mutation processes in bacteria, a variation of the original model proposed by Luria and Delbrück.

Nonlinear diffusions: extremal properties of Barenblatt profiles, best matching and delays

In this paper, we consider functionals based on moments and non-linear entropies which have a linear growth in time in case of source-type so-lutions to the fast diffusion or porous medium equations, that are also known as Barenblatt solutions. As functions of time, these functionals have convexity properties for generic solutions, so that their asymptotic slopes are extremal for Barenblatt profiles. The method relies on scaling properties of the evo-lution equations and provides a simple and direct proof of sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities in scale invariant form. The method also gives refined estimates of the growth of the second moment and, as a consequence, establishes the monotonicity of the delay corresponding to the best matching Barenblatt solution compared to the Barenblatt solution with same initial sec-ond moment. Here the notion of best matching is defined in terms of a relative entropy.

Stability results for logarithmic Sobolev and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities

This paper is devoted to improvements of functional inequalities based on scalings and written in terms of relative entropies. When scales are taken into account and second moments fixed accordingly, deficit functionals provide explicit stability measurements, i.e., bound with explicit constants distances to the manifold of optimal functions. Various results are obtained for the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality and its Euclidean counterpart, for the Gaussian generalized Poincar{é} inequalities and for the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities. As a consequence, faster convergence rates in diffusion equations (fast diffusion, Ornstein-Uhlenbeck and porous medium equations) are obtained.

The fractional Fisher information and the central limit theorem for stable laws

A new information-theoretic approach to the central limit theorem for stable laws is presented. The main novelty is the concept of relative fractional Fisher information, which shares most of the properties of the classical one, included Blachman-Stam type inequalities. These inequalities relate the fractional Fisher information of the sum of $n$ independent random variables to the information contained in sums over subsets containing $n-1$ of the random variables. As a consequence, a simple proof of the monotonicity of the relative fractional Fisher information in central limit theorems for stable law is obtained, together with an explicit decay rate.

On Rosenau-Type Approximations to Fractional Diffusion Equations

Owing to the Rosenau argument in Physical Review A, 46 (1992), pag. 12-15, originally proposed to obtain a regularized version of the Chapman-Enskog expansion of hydrodynamics, we introduce a non-local linear kinetic equation which approximates a fractional diffusion equation. We then show that the solution to this approximation, apart of a rapidly vanishing in time perturbation, approaches the fundamental solution of the fractional diffusion (a Lévy stable law) at large times.

Rényi entropies and nonlinear diffusion equations

Since their introduction in the early sixties, the Rényi entropies have been used in many contexts, ranging from information theory to astrophysics, turbulence phenomena and others. In this note, we enlighten the main connections between Rényi entropies and nonlinear diffusion equations. In particular, it is shown that these relationships allow to prove various functional inequalities in sharp form.

Wealth distribution and collective knowledge. A Boltzmann approach

We introduce and discuss a nonlinear kinetic equation of Boltzmann type which describes the influence of knowledge in the evolution of wealth in a system of agents which interact through the binary trades introduced in Cordier, Pareschi, Toscani, J. Stat. Phys. 2005. The trades, which include both saving propensity and the risks of the market, are here modified in the risk and saving parameters, which now are assumed to depend on the personal degree of knowledge. The numerical simulations show that the presence of knowledge has the potential to produce a class of wealthy agents and to account for a larger proportion of wealth inequality.

Condensation phenomena in nonlinear drift equations

We study nonnegative, measure-valued solutions to nonlinear drift type equations modelling concentration phenomena related to Bose-Einstein particles. In one spatial dimension, we prove existence and uniqueness for measure solutions. Moreover, we prove that all solutions blow up in finite time leading to a concentration of mass only at the origin, and the concentrated mass absorbs increasingly the mass converging to the total mass as time goes to infinity. Our analysis makes a substantial use of independent variable scalings and pseudo-inverse functions techniques.

Heat equation and convolution inequalities

It is known that many classical inequalities linked to convolutions can be obtained by looking at the monotonicity in time of convolutions of powers of solutions to the heat equation, provided that both the exponents and the coefficients of diffusions are suitably chosen and related. This idea can be applied to give an alternative proof of the sharp form of the classical Young's inequality and its converse, to Brascamp--Lieb type inequalities, Babenko's inequality and Prékopa--Leindler inequality as well as the Shannon's entropy power inequality. This note aims in presenting new proofs of these results, in the spirit of the original arguments introduced by Stam to prove the entropy power inequality.

Large-time Behavior of the Solutions to Rosenau Type Approximations to the Heat Equation

In this paper we study the large-time behavior of the solution to a general Rosenau type approximation to the heat equation, by showing that the solution to this approximation approaches the fundamental solution of the heat equation at a sub-optimal rate. The result is valid in particular for the central differences scheme approximation of the heat equation, a property which to our knowledge has never been observed before.

Improved interpolation inequalities, relative entropy and fast diffusion equations

We consider a family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev interpolation inequalities which interpolate between Sobolev's inequality and the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, with optimal constants. The difference of the two terms in the interpolation inequalities (written with optimal constant) measures a distance to the manifold of the optimal functions. We give an explicit estimate of the remainder term and establish an improved inequality, with explicit norms and fully detailed constants. Our approach is based on nonlinear evolution equations and improved entropy - entropy production estimates along the associated flow. Optimizing a relative entropy functional with respect to a scaling parameter, or handling properly second moment estimates, turns out to be the central technical issue. This is a new method in the theory of nonlinear evolution equations, which can be interpreted as the best fit of the solution in the asymptotic regime among all asymptotic profiles.

The concavity of Rènyi entropy power

We associate to the p-th Rényi entropy a definition of entropy power, which is the natural extension of Shannon's entropy power and exhibits a nice behaviour along solutions to the p-nonlinear heat equation in $R^n$. We show that the Rényi entropy power of general probability densities solving such equations is always a concave function of time, whereas it has a linear behaviour in correspondence to the Barenblatt source-type solutions. We then shown that the p-th Rényi entropy power of a probability density which solves the nonlinear diffusion of order p, is a concave function of time. This result extends Costa's concavity inequality for Shannon's entropy power to Rényi entropies.

Fast diffusion equations: matching large time asymptotics by relative entropy methods

A non self-similar change of coordinates provides improved matching asymptotics of the solutions of the fast diffusion equation for large times, compared to already known results, in the range for which Barenblatt solutions have a finite second moment. The method is based on relative entropy estimates and a time-dependent change of variables which is determined by second moments, and not by the scaling corresponding to the self-similar Barenblatt solutions, as it is usually done.

Boltzmann legacy and wealth distribution

We briefly review results on nonlinear kinetic equation of Boltzmann type which describe the evolution of wealth in a simple agents market. The mathematical structure of the underlying kinetic equations allows to use well-known techniques of wide use in kinetic theory of rarefied gases to obtain information on the process of relaxation to a stationary profile, as well as to identify simple interaction rules which are responsible of the formation of Pareto tails.

Explicit equilibria in a kinetic model of gambling

We introduce and discuss a nonlinear kinetic equation of Boltzmann type which describes the evolution of wealth in a pure gambling process, where the entire sum of wealths of two agents is up for gambling, and randomly shared between the agents. For this equation the analytical form of the steady states is found for various realizations of the random fraction of the sum which is shared to the agents. Among others, Gibbs distribution appears as steady state in case of a uniformly distributed random fraction, while Gamma distribution appears for a random fraction which is Beta distributed. The case in which the gambling game is only conservative-in-the-mean is shown to lead to an explicit heavy tailed distribution.

Kinetic models with randomly perturbed binary collisions

We introduce a class of Kac-like kinetic equations on the real line, with general random collisional rules, which include as particular cases models for wealth redistribution in an agent-based market or models for granular gases with a background heat bath. Conditions on these collisional rules which guarantee both the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium profiles and their main properties are found. We show that the characterization of these stationary solutions is of independent interest, since the same profiles are shown to be solutions of different evolution problems, both in the econophysics context and in the kinetic theory of rarefied gases.

Spectral methods for the non cut-off Boltzmann equation and numerical grazing collision limit

In this paper we study the numerical passage from the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without cut-off to the Fokker-Planck-Landau equation in the so-called grazing collision limit. To this aim we derive a Fourier spectral method for the non cut-off Boltzmann equation in the spirit of L. Pareschi, B.Perthame, TTSP 25, (1996) and L.Pareschi, G.Russo, SINUM 37, (2000). We show that the kernel modes that define the spectral method have the correct grazing collision limit providing a consistent spectral method for the limiting Fokker-Planck-Landau equation. In particular, for small values of the scattering angle, we derive an approximate formula for the kernel modes of the non cut-off Boltzmann equation which, similarly to the Fokker-Planck-Landau case, can be computed with a fast algorithm. The uniform spectral accuracy of the method with respect to the grazing collision parameter is also proved.

The grazing collision limit of Kac caricature of Bose-Einstein particles

We discuss the grazing collision limit of certain kinetic models of Bose-Einstein particles obtained from a suitable modification of the one- dimensional Kac caricature of a Maxwellian gas without cut-off. We recover in the limit a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation which presents many similarities with the one introduced by Kaniadakis and Quarati in [13 ]. In order to do so, we perform a study of the moments of the solution. Moreover, as is typical in Maxwell models, we make an essential use of the Fourier version of the equation.

First--order continuous models of opinion formation

We study certain nonlinear continuous models of opinion formation derived from a kinetic description involving exchange of opinion between individual agents. These models imply that the only possible final opinions are the extremal ones, and are similar to models of pure drift in magnetization. Both analytical and numerical methods allow to recover the final distribution of opinion between the two extremal ones.
