Higher dimensional Shimura varieties in the Prym loci of ramified double covers

In this paper we construct Shimura subvarieties of dimension bigger than one of the moduli space of polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension, which are generically contained in the Pym loci of (ramified) double covers. The idea is to adapt the techniques already used to construct Shimura curves in the Prym loci to the higher dimensional case, namely to use families of Galois covers of the projective line. The case of abelian covers is treated in detail, since in this case it is possible to make explicit computations that allow to verify a sufficient condition for such a family to yield a Shimura subvariety of the space polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension.

On the dimension of totally geodesic submanifolds in the Prym loci

In this paper we give a bound on the dimension of a totally geodesic submanifold of the moduli space of polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension, which is contained in the Prym locus of a (possibly) ramified double cover. This improves the already known bounds. The idea is to adapt the techniques introduced by the authors in collaboration with A. Ghigi and G. P. Pirola for the Torelli map to the case of the Prym maps of (ramified) double covers.

Infinitely many Shimura varieties in the Jacobian locus for $g \leq 4$

We study families of Galois covers of curves of positive genus. It is known that under a numerical condition these families yield Shimura subvarieties generically contained in the Jacobian locus. We prove that there are only 6 families satisfying this condition, all of them in genus 2,3 or 4. We also show that these families admit two fibrations in totally geodesic subvarieties, generalizing a result of Grushevsky and Möller. Countably many of these fibres are Shimura. Thus the Jacobian locus contains infinitely many Shimura subvarieties of positive dimension of any $g \leq 4$.

Shimura curves in the Prym loci of ramified double covers

We study Shimura curves of PEL type in the space of polarised abelian varieties $A^δ_p$ generically contained in the ramified Prym locus. We generalise to ramified double covers, the construction done in [10] in the unramified case and in the case of two ramification points. Namely, we construct families of double covers which are compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve. We only consider the case of one-dimensional families and where the quotient of the base curve by the group is ${\mathbb P}^1$. Using computer algebra we obtain 184 Shimura curves contained in the (ramified) Prym loci.

Fujita decomposition and Hodge loci

This paper contains two results on Hodge loci in the moduli space of curves. The first concerns fibrations over curves with a non-trivial flat part in the Fujita decomposition. If local Torelli theorem holds for the fibres and the fibration is non-trivial, an appropriate exterior power of the cohomology of the fiber admits a Hodge substructure. In the case of curves it follows that the moduli image of the fibers is contained in a proper Hodge locus. The second result deals with divisors in the moduli space of curves. It is proved that the image of a divisor in the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties is not contained in a proper totally geodesic subvariety. It follows that a Hodge locus in the moduli space of curves has codimension at least 2.

On totally geodesic submanifolds in the Jacobian locus

We study submanifolds of A_g that are totally geodesic for the locally symmetric metric and which are contained in the closure of the Jacobian locus but not in its boundary. In the first section we recall a formula for the second fundamental form of the period map due to Pirola, Tortora and the first author. We show that this result can be stated quite neatly using a line bundle over the product of the curve with itself. We give an upper bound for the dimension of a germ of a totally geodesic submanifold passing through [C] in M_g in terms of the gonality of C. This yields an upper bound for the dimension of a germ of a totally geodesic submanifold contained in the Jacobian locus, which only depends on the genus. We also study the submanifolds of A_g obtained from cyclic covers of the projective line. These have been studied by various authors. Moonen determined which of them are Shimura varieties using deep results in positive characteristic. Using our methods we show that many of the submanifolds which are not Shimura varieties are not even totally geodesic.

Shimura varieties in the Torelli locus via Galois coverings of elliptic curves

We study Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$ obtained from families of Galois coverings $f: C \rightarrow C'$ where $C'$ is a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g' \geq 1$ and $g= g(C)$. We give the complete list of all such families that satisfy a simple sufficient condition that ensures that the closure of the image of the family via the Torelli map yields a Shimura subvariety of $\mathsf{A}_g$ for $g' =1,2$ and for all $g \geq 2,4$ and for $g' > 2$ and $g \leq 9$. In a previous work of the first and second author together with A. Ghigi [FGP] similar computations were done in the case $g'=0$. Here we find 6 families of Galois coverings, all with $g' = 1$ and $g=2,3,4$ and we show that these are the only families with $g'=1$ satisfying this sufficient condition. We show that among these examples two families yield new Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$, while the other examples arise from certain Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$ already obtained as families of Galois coverings of $\mathbb{P}^1$ in [FGP]. Finally we prove that if a family satisfies this sufficient condition with $g'\geq 1$, then $g \leq 6g'+1$.

Shimura varieties in the Torelli locus via Galois coverings

Given a family of Galois coverings of the projective line we give a simple sufficient condition ensuring that the closure of the image of the family via the period mapping is a special (or Shimura) subvariety in A_g. By a computer program we get the list of all families in genus up to 8 satisfying our condition. There is no family in genus 8, all of them are in genus at most 7. These examples are related to a conjecture of Oort. Among them we get the cyclic examples constructed by various authors (Shimura, Mostow, De Jong-Noot, Rohde, Moonen and others) and the abelian non-cyclic examples found by Moonen-Oort. We get 7 new non-abelian examples.

On the Koszul cohomology of canonical and Prym-canonical binary curves

In this paper we study Koszul cohomology and the Green and Prym-Green conjectures for canonical and Prym-canonical binary curves. We prove that if property $N_p$ holds for a canonical or a Prym-canonical binary curve of genus $g$ then it holds for a generic canonical or Prym-canonical binary curve of genus $g+1$. We also verify the Green and Prym-Green conjectures for generic canonical and Prym-canonical binary curves of low genus ($6\leq g\leq 15$, $g\neq 8$ for Prym-canonical and $3\leq g\leq 12$ for canonical).

Hyperplane sections of abelian surfaces

By a theorem of Wahl, the canonically embedded curves which are hyperplane section of K3 surfaces are distinguished by the non-surjectivity of their Wahl map. In this paper we address the problem of distinguishing hyperplane sections of abelian surfaces. The somewhat surprising result is that the Wahl map of such curves is (tendentially) surjective, but their second Wahl map has corank at least 2 (in fact a more precise result is proved).

preprint2010arXiv

On the second gaussian map for curves on a K3 surface

By a theorem of Wahl, for canonically embedded curves which are hyperplane sections of K3 surfaces, the first gaussian map is not surjective. In this paper we prove that if C is a general hyperplane section of high genus (greater than 280) of a general polarized K3 surface, then the second gaussian map of C is surjective. The resulting bound for the genus g of a general curve with surjective second gaussian map is decreased to g >152.

Etale homotopy types of moduli stacks of algebraic curves with symmetries

Using the machinery of etale homotopy theory a' la Artin-Mazur we determine the etale homotopy types of moduli stacks over $\bar{\Q}$ parametrizing families of algebraic curves of genus g greater than 1 endowed with an action of a finite group G of automorphisms, which comes with a fixed embedding in the mapping class group, such that in the associated complex analytic situation the action of G is precisely the differentiable action induced by this specified embedding of G in the mapping class group.
