Exchange interactions in $d^{5}$ Kitaev materials: From Na$_2$IrO$_3$ to $α$-RuCl$_3$

We present an analytical study of the exchange interactions between pseudospin one-half $d^{5}$ ions in honeycomb lattices with edge-shared octahedra. Various exchange channels involving Hubbard U, charge-transfer excitations, and cyclic exchange are considered. Hoppings within $t_{2g}$ orbitals as well as between $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ orbitals are included. Special attention is paid to the trigonal crystal field $Δ$ effects on the exchange parameters. The obtained exchange Hamiltonian is dominated by ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction K within a wide range of $Δ$. It is found that a parameter region close to the charge-transfer insulator regime and with a small $Δ$ is most promising to realize the Kitaev spin liquid phase. Two representative honeycomb materials Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and $α$-RuCl$_3$ are discussed based on our theory. We have found that both materials share dominant ferromagnetic K and positive non-diagonal $Γ$ values. However, their Heisenberg J terms have opposite signs: AFM J>0 in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and FM J<0 in $α$-RuCl$_3$. This brings different magnetic fluctuations and results in their different magnetization behaviors and spin excitation spectra. Proximity to FM state due to the large FM J is emphasized in $α$-RuCl$_3$. The differences between the exchange couplings of these two materials originate from the opposite $Δ$ values, indicating that the crystal field can serve as an efficient control parameter to tune the magnetic properties of $d^{5}$ spin-orbit Mott insulators.

Kitaev Spin Liquid in 3d Transition Metal Compounds

We study the exchange interactions and resulting magnetic phases in the honeycomb cobaltates. For a broad range of trigonal crystal fields acting on Co2+ ions, the low-energy pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian is dominated by bond-dependent Ising couplings that constitute the Kitaev model. The non-Kitaev terms nearly vanish at small values of trigonal field Δ, resulting in spin liquid ground state. Considering Na3Co2SbO6 as an example, we find that this compound is proximate to a Kitaev spin liquid phase, and can be driven into it by slightly reducing Δby \sim 20 meV, e.g., via strain or pressure control. We argue that due to the more localized nature of the magnetic electrons in 3d compounds, cobaltates offer the most promising search area for Kitaev model physics.

Effect of the electron-lattice coupling on the charge and magnetic order in rare-earth nickelates

We investigate the impact of electron-lattice coupling on the stability of various magnetic orders in rare-earth nickelates. We use the Hartree-Fock approximation, at zero temperature, to study an effective, two-band model with correlations characterized by a Hubbard $U$ and a Hund's $J$. This is coupled to breathing-mode distortions of the octahedral oxygen cages, described semi-classically, with a Holstein term. We analyze the effect of the various parameters on the resulting phase diagram, in particular on the charge disproportionation and on the magnetic order. We confirm that the coupling to the lattice cooperates with Hund's coupling and thus encourages charge disproportionation. We also find that it favors the fully disproportionated, 4-site periodic magnetic order of type $\Uparrow 0 \Downarrow 0$. Other convergent magnetic phases, such as the collinear $\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$ and non-collinear $\uparrow\rightarrow\downarrow\leftarrow$ states, do not couple to the lattice because of their lack of charge disproportionation. Novel phases, e.g. with charge disproportionation but no magnetic order, are also found to be stabilized in specific conditions.

Kitaev quantum spin liquid - concept and materialization

A decade ago, Alexei Kitaev proposed an exactly solvable $S$ = 1/2 model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, where the spins fractionalize into Majorana fermions and form a topological quantum spin liquid (QSL) in the ground state. It was soon recognized that a family of complex iridium oxides, as well as ruthenium chloride, with honeycomb structure are magnetic insulators and accommodate essential ingredients of the Kitaev model, due to the interplay of electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling. This initiated a race to materialize the Kitaev QSL and to capture the signature of Majorana fermions. In this review, we provide a wide perspective of this rapidly growing field, including theory, materials and experiment. We first summarize the theoretical background of the Kitaev QSL ground state and its materialization using spin-orbital-entangled $J_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 moments. This is followed by an overview of candidate materials and their magnetic properties, including Na$_2$IrO$_3$, $α$, $β$, $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$,$α$-RuCl$_3$ and H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. Finally, we review the latest exciting progress in the search for the Kitaev QSL. In particular, H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ and $α$-RuCl$_3$ in applied magnetic field show signatures of the QSL state, and $α$-RuCl$_3$ has unusual magnetic excitations and thermal transport properties that are consistent with spin fractionalization.

Doping-Induced Ferromagnetism and Possible Triplet Pairing in d4 Mott Insulators

We study the effects of electron doping in Mott insulators containing d^4 ions such as Ru4+, Os4+, Rh5+, and Ir5+ with J=0 singlet ground state. Depending on the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, the undoped systems are either nonmagnetic or host an unusual, excitonic magnetism arising from a condensation of the excited J=1 triplet states of t_2g^4. We find that the interaction between J-excitons and doped carriers strongly supports ferromagnetism, converting both the nonmagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of the parent insulator into a ferromagnetic metal, and further to a nonmagnetic metal. Close to the ferromagnetic phase, the low-energy spin response is dominated by intense paramagnon excitations that may act as mediators of a triplet pairing.

Enhancing triplet superconductivity by the proximity to a singlet superconductor in oxide heterostructures

We show how in principle a coherent coupling between two superconductors of opposite parity can be realized in a three-layer oxide heterostructure. Due to strong intraionic spin-orbit coupling in the middle layer, singlet Cooper pairs are converted into triplet ones and vice versa. This results in a large enhancement of the triplet superconductivity, persisting well above the native triplet critical temperature.

Magnetic anisotropy in the Kitaev model systems Na2IrO3 and RuCl3

We study the ordered moment direction in the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model relevant to honeycomb lattice magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. We utilize numerical diagonalization and analyze the exact cluster groundstates using a particular set of spin coherent states, obtaining thereby quantum corrections to the magnetic anisotropy beyond conventional perturbative methods. It is found that the quantum fluctuations strongly modify the moment direction obtained at a classical level, and are thus crucial for a precise quantification of the interactions. The results show that the moment direction is a sensitive probe of the model parameters in real materials. Focusing on the experimentally relevant zigzag phases of the model, we analyze the currently available neutron and resonant x-ray diffraction data on Na2IrO3 and RuCl3, and discuss the parameter regimes plausible in these Kitaev-Heisenberg model systems.

Hidden symmetries of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model: Implications for honeycomb lattice iridates A2IrO3

We have explored the hidden symmetries of a generic four-parameter nearest-neighbor spin model, allowed in honeycomb lattice compounds under trigonal compression. Our method utilizes a systematic algorithm to identify all dual transformations of the model that map the Hamiltonian on itself, changing the parameters and providing exact links between different points in its parameter space. We have found the complete set of points of hidden SU(2) symmetry at which seemingly highly anisotropic model can be mapped back on the Heisenberg model and inherits therefore its properties such as the presence of gapless Goldstone modes. The procedure used to search for the hidden symmetries is quite general and may be extended to other bond-anisotropic spin models and other lattices, such as the triangular, kagome, hyper-honeycomb, or harmonic-honeycomb lattices. We apply our findings to the honeycomb lattice iridates Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3, and illustrate how they help to identify plausible values of the model parameters that are compatible with the available experimental data.

Magnetic Excitations in Spin-Orbit Coupled $d^4$ Mott Insulator on Square Lattice

We study the magnetic order and excitations in strong spin-orbit coupled, Van Vleck-type, $d^4$ Mott insulators on a square lattice. Extending the previous work, we include the tetragonal crystal field splitting and explore its effects on magnetic phase diagram and magnon spectra. Two different ordered phases, with in-plane and out-of-plane orientation of the staggered moments, are found for the higher and lower values of the crystal field splitting, respectively. The magnetic excitation spectra for paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases are calculated and discussed in the context of a candidate spin-orbit $d^4$ Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$.

Unconventional pairing and electronic dimerization instabilities in the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model

We study the quantum many-body instabilities of the $t -J_{\mathrm{K}} - J_{\mathrm{H}}$ Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian on the honeycomb lattice as a minimal model for a doped spin-orbit Mott insulator. This spin-$1/2$ model is believed to describe the magnetic properties of the layered transition-metal oxide Na$_2$IrO$_3$. We determine the ground-state of the system with finite charge-carrier density from the functional renormalization group (fRG) for correlated fermionic systems. To this end, we derive fRG flow-equations adapted to the lack of full spin-rotational invariance in the fermionic interactions, here represented by the highly frustrated and anisotropic Kitaev exchange term. Additionally employing a set of Ward identities for the Kitaev-Heisenberg model, the numerical solution of the flow equations suggests a rich phase diagram emerging upon doping charge carriers into the ground-state manifold ($\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids and magnetically ordered phases). We corroborate superconducting triplet $p$-wave instabilities driven by ferromagnetic exchange and various singlet pairing phases. For filling $δ> 1/4$, the $p$-wave pairing gives rise to a topological state with protected Majorana edge-modes. For antiferromagnetic Kitaev and ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange we obtain bond-order instabilities at van Hove filling supported by nesting and density-of-states enhancement, yielding dimerization patterns of the electronic degrees of freedom on the honeycomb lattice. Further, our flow equations are applicable to a wider class of model Hamiltonians.

Excitonic Magnetism in Van Vleck-type d^4 Mott Insulators

In Mott insulators with the t^4_{2g} electronic configuration such as of Re^{3+}, Ru^{4+}, Os^{4+}, and Ir^{5+} ions, spin-orbit coupling dictates a Van Vleck-type nonmagnetic ground state with angular momentum J=0, and the magnetic response is governed by gapped singlet-triplet excitations. We derive the exchange interactions between these excitons and study their collective behavior on different lattices. In perovskites, a conventional Bose condensation of excitons into a magnetic state is found, while an unexpected one-dimensional behavior supporting spin-liquid states emerges in honeycomb lattices, due to the bond-directional nature of exciton interactions in the case of 90 degree d-p-d bonding geometry.

Spin-state Crossover Model for the Magnetism of Iron Pnictides

We propose a minimal model describing magnetic behavior of Fe-based superconductors. The key ingredient of the model is a dynamical mixing of quasi-degenerate spin states of Fe2+ ion by intersite electron hoppings, resulting in an effective local spin Seff. The moments Seff tend to form singlet pairs, and may condense into a spin nematic phase due to the emergent biquadratic exchange couplings. The long-range ordered part m of Seff varies widely, 0<=m<=Seff, but magnon spectra are universal and scale with Seff, resolving the puzzle of large but fluctuating Fe-moments. Unusual temperature dependences of a local moment and spin susceptibility are also explained.

Competition between d-wave and topological p-wave superconductivity in the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model

The competition between Kitaev and Heisenberg interactions away from half filling is studied for the the hole-doped Kitaev-Heisenberg $t$-$J_K$-$J_H$ model on a honeycomb lattice. While the isotropic Heisenberg coupling supports a time-reversal violating d-wave singlet state, we find that the Kitaev interaction favors a time-reversal invariant p-wave superconducting phase, which obeys the rotational symmetries of the microscopic model, and is robust for $J_H<J_K/2$. Within the p-wave superconducting phase, a critical chemical potential $μ_c \approx t$ separates a topologically trivial phase for $|μ|< μ_c$ from a topologically non-trivial $Z_2$ time-reversal invariant spin-triplet phase for $|μ|>μ_c$.

On the Origin of Zigzag Magnetic Order in Iridium Oxide Na2IrO3

We explore the phase diagram of spin-orbit Mott insulators on a honeycomb lattice, within the Kitaev-Heisenberg model extended to its full parameter space. Zigzag-type magnetic order is found to occupy a large part of the phase diagram of the model, and its physical origin is explained as due to interorbital t2g-eg hopping. Magnetic susceptibility and spin wave spectra are calculated and compared to the experimental data, obtaining thereby the spin coupling constants in Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3.

Bulk and Surface Nanoscale Hole Density Inhomogeneity in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ Cuprates

It is well established that the hole density in the prototypical superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ is very inhomogeneous due to Sr-dopant induced disorder. On the other hand, until recently it is widely believed that the hole distribution in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ doped by interstitial oxygen is much more uniform. Recent nuclear magnetic resonance measurements indicate, however, that the charge inhomogeneity in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ is close to that in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. Calculations performed in the present paper confirm this observation. We also show that the charge inhomogeneity is most pronounced at the surface layer that can be probed by scanning tunneling microscope. Our simulations demonstrate that, despite having similar amplitudes of charge inhomogeneity, the hole mean free path in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ is substantially longer than that in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The screening of Coulomb repulsion in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ is also stronger. These two reasons might explain the difference in superconducting critical temperatures between these two compounds.

Dimensional crossover and the magnetic transition in electron doped manganites

We introduce a microscopic model for electron doped manganites that explains the mechanism of the observed transition from $G$-type antiferromagnetic ($G$-AF) to $C$-type antiferromagnetic ($C$-AF) order under increasing doping by double exchange mechanism. The model unravels the crucial role played by $e_g$ orbital degrees of freedom and explains the observed metal-to-insulator transition by a dimensional crossover at the magnetic phase transition. The specific heat and the spin canting angle found for the $G$-AF phase agree with the experimental findings. As a surprising outcome of the theory we find that spin canting is suppressed in the $C$-AF phase, in agreement with the experiment, due to the Fermi surface topology.

Dispersion of orbital excitations in 2D quantum antiferromagnets

We map the problem of the orbital excitation (orbiton) in a 2D antiferromagnetic and ferroorbital ground state onto a problem of a hole in 2D antiferromagnet. The orbiton turns out to be coupled to magnons and can only be mobile on a strongly renormalized scale by dressing with magnetic excitations. We show that this leads to a dispersion relation reflecting the two-site unit cell of the antiferromagnetic background, in contrast to the predictions based on a mean-field approximation and linear orbital-wave theory.

Effects of spin vacancies on magnetic properties of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model

We study the ground state properties of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model in a magnetic field and explore the evolution of spin correlations in the presence of non-magnetic vacancies. By means of exact diagonalizations, the phase diagram without vacancies is determined as a function of the magnetic field and the ratio between Kitaev and Heisenberg interactions. We show that in the (antiferromagnetic) stripe ordered phase the static susceptibility and its anisotropy can be described by a spin canting mechanism. This accounts as well for the transition to the polarized phase when including quantum fluctuations perturbatively. Effects of spin vacancies depend sensitively on the type of the ground state. In the liquid phase, the magnetization pattern around a single vacancy in a small field is determined, and its spatial anisotropy is related to that of non-zero further neighbor correlations induced by the field and/or Heisenberg interactions. In the stripe phase, the joint effect of a vacancy and a small field breaks the six-fold symmetry of the model and stabilizes a particular stripe pattern. Similar symmetry-breaking effects occur even at zero field due to effective interactions between vacancies. This selection mechanism and intrinsic randomness of vacancy positions may lead to spin-glass behavior.

Intrinsic coupling of orbital excitations to spin fluctuations in Mott insulators

We show how the general and basic asymmetry between two fundamental degrees of freedom present in strongly correlated oxides, spin and orbital, has very profound repercussions on the elementary spin and orbital excitations. Whereas the magnons remain largely unaffected, orbitons become inherently coupled with spin fluctuations in spin-orbital models with antiferromagnetic and ferroorbital ordered ground states. The composite orbiton-magnon modes that emerge fractionalize again in one dimension, giving rise to spin-orbital separation in the peculiar regime where spinons are faster than orbitons.

Enhanced Pairing Correlations near Oxygen Dopants in Cuprate Superconductors

Recent experiments on Bi-based cuprate superconductors have revealed an unexpected enhancement of the pairing correlations near the interstitial oxygen dopant ions. Here we propose a possible mechanism -- based on local screening effects -- by which the oxygen dopants do modify the electronic parameters within the CuO_2 planes and strongly increase the superexchange coupling J. This enhances the spin pairing effects locally and may explain the observed spatial variations of the density of states and the pairing gap.

Kitaev-Heisenberg Model on Honeycomb Lattice: Possible Exotic Phases in Iridium Oxides $A_2$IrO$_3$

We derive and study a spin one-half Hamiltonian on a honeycomb lattice describing the exchange interactions between Ir$^{4+}$ ions in a family of layered iridates $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A$=Li,Na). Depending on the microscopic parameters, the Hamiltonian interpolates between the Heisenberg and exactly solvable Kitaev models. Exact diagonalization and a complementary spin-wave analysis reveal the presence of an extended spin-liquid phase near the Kitaev limit and a conventional Néel state close to the Heisenberg limit. The two phases are separated by an unusual stripy antiferromagnetic state, which is the exact ground state of the model at the midpoint between two limits.

Orbital order and possible superconductivity in LaNiO3/LaMO3 superlattices

A hypothetical layered oxide La_2NiMO_6 where NiO_2 and MO_2 planes alternate along the c-axis of ABO_3 perovskite lattice is considered theoretically. Here, M denotes a trivalent cation Al, Ga,... such that MO_2 planes are insulating and suppress the c-axis charge transfer. We predict that correlated e_g electrons in the NiO_2 planes develop a planar x^2-y^2 orbital order driven by the reduced dimensionality and further supported by epitaxial strain from the substrate. Low energy electronic states can be mapped to a single-band t-t'-J model, suggesting favorable conditions for high-T_c superconductivity.

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering on Spin-Orbit Coupled Insulating Iridates

We determine how the elementary excitations of iridium-oxide materials, which are dominated by a strong relativistic spin-orbit coupling, appear in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS). Whereas the RIXS spectral weight at the L2 x-ray edge vanishes, we find it to be strong at the L3-edge. Applying this to Sr2IrO4, we observe that RIXS, besides being sensitive to local doublet to quartet transitions, meticulously maps out the strongly dispersive delocalized excitations of the low-lying spin-orbit doublets.

Dimerization versus Orbital Moment Ordering in the Mott insulator YVO$_3$

We use exact diagonalization combined with mean-field theory to investigate the phase diagram of the spin-orbital model for cubic vanadates. The spin-orbit coupling competes with Hund's exchange and triggers a novel phase, with the ordering of $t_{2g}$ orbital magnetic moments stabilized by the tilting of VO$_6$ octahedra. It explains qualitatively spin canting and reduction of magnetization observed in YVO$_3$. At finite temperature an orbital Peierls instability in the $C$-type antiferromagnetic phase induces modulation of magnetic exchange constants even in absence of lattice distortions. The calculated spin structure factor shows a magnon splitting due to the orbital Peierls dimerization.
