The Number of Confirmed Cases of Covid-19 by using Machine Learning: Methods and Challenges

Covid-19 is one of the biggest health challenges that the world has ever faced. Public health policy makers need the reliable prediction of the confirmed cases in future to plan medical facilities. Machine learning methods learn from the historical data and make a prediction about the event. Machine learning methods have been used to predict the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19. In this paper, we present a detailed review of these research papers. We present a taxonomy that groups them in four categories. We further present the challenges in this field. We provide suggestions to the machine learning practitioners to improve the performance of machine learning methods for the prediction of confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Enhanced terahertz transmission through a periodic array of tapered rectangular apertures

We numerically analyse extraordinary terahertz transmission properties of an array of rectangular shaped apertures perforated periodically on a thin metal film. The apertures are tapered at different angles to achieve higher field concentration at the tapered end. The periodic sub-wavelength scale apertures ensure plasmonic behaviour giving rise to the enhanced transmission of a specific frequency mode decided by the periodicity. We compare results of transmission with the rectangular shaped apertures of same parameters and observe a significant increase in the transmission for the tapered case. We have compared results of our numerical simulations with theory and have found them consistent.

Terahertz nonlinear conduction and absorption saturation in silicon waveguides

We employ a silicon dielectric waveguide to confine and concentrate terahertz pulses, and observe that the absorption saturates under strong terahertz fields. By comparing the response between lightly-doped and intrinsic silicon waveguides, we confirm the role of hot carriers in this saturable absorption. We introduce a nonlinear dynamical model of Drude conductivity that, when incorporated into a wave propagation equation, accurately reproduces the observations and elucidates the physical mechanisms underlying this nonlinear effect. The results are numerically confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations of the Boltzmann transport equation, coupled with split-step nonlinear wave propagation.
