Two-way enhancement of sensitivity by tailoring higher-order exceptional points

Higher-order exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems have recently been used as a tool to engineer high-sensitivity devices, attracting tremendous attention from multidisciplinary fields. Here, we present a simple yet effective scheme to enhance the device sensitivity by slightly deviating the gain-neutral-loss linear configuration to a triangular one, resulting in an abrupt phase transition from third-order to second-order exceptional points. Our analysis demonstrates that the exceptional points can be tailored by a judicious tuning of the coupling parameters of the system, resulting in enhanced sensitivity to a small perturbation. The tunable coupling also leads to a sharp change in the sensitivity slope, enabling the perturbation to be measured precisely as a function of coupling. This two-way detection of the perturbation opens up a rich landscape toward ultra-sensitive measurements, which could be applicable to a wide range of non-Hermitian ternary platforms.

Variational approach to study solitary waves in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear couplers

We theoretically investigate the solitary waves and their switching dynamics in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric directional fiber coupler, exhibiting Kerr nonlinearity, by developing a variational analysis. We analyze the fundamental switching characteristics of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Kerr coupler in the picosecond timescale by considering the coupled-mode equation for the unperturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which we compare to its conventional counterpart. The impacts of higher-order perturbations (intrapulse Raman scattering, self-steepening, and third-order dispersion) are investigated in detail in the femtosecond timescale. In all cases, the variational method successfully predicts each of the numerically observed switching characteristics. Our semianalytical treatment has the potential to provide physical insights into complex switching dynamics in various nonlinear coupler configurations from different areas of physics.

Chaos in Qubit Coupled Optomechanical Systems

We have found stable chaotic solutions for optomechanical systems coupled with a Two-Level System or qubit. In this system methods have been found which can be used to Tune in and out of Chaos as well as various n-period motions. This includes achieving chaos by changing the detuning, coupling parameters, and Power of the driving laser. This allows us to manipulate chaos using either the qubit or the optical cavity. Chaotic motion was also observed in both the qubit and cavity by only changing the relative phase between of driving fields of the two. This gives us the prospect of creating and exploring chaotic motion in quantum mechanical systems with further ease

Controllable Kuznetsov Ma-like breather generation via dispersion modulation in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients has applications in numerous areas of physics, specifically in the context of nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensate. Apart from the usual bright and dark-soliton solutions, the so-called rational soliton solutions are perceived to have tremendous impact in futuristic applications and understanding many natural phenomena. In this work, we have studied various orders of rational solution of the variable coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It is possible to extract the first and the second-order controlled KM-like breather by periodic modulation of the dispersion along the propagation direction. The amplitude of the dispersion modulation controls the background as well as the breather peak power in the case of the first-order rational soliton solution, whereas the spatial frequency controls the breathing frequency of the KM-like breather. Our study reveals that it is possible to obtain various new features in the third order rational soliton by modulating the dispersion parameter.

Transitionless phonon assisted photon-qubit quantum state transfer in a hybrid optomechanical system

Quantum state transfer is crucial for quantum information processing and quantum computation. Here, we propose a hybrid optomechanical system capable of coupling a qubit, an optical mode and a mechanical oscillator. The displacement of the mechanical oscillator, due to radiation pressure, induces spatial variation in the cavity field, which in turn couples the qubit with phonon mode. This allows state transfer between the cavity mode and the qubit without an actual interaction between them. We present a scheme for the transitionless quantum state transfer based on the transitionless quantum driving algorithm allowing us to achieve perfect state transfer.

Dispersion Managed Generation of Peregrine Solitons and Kuznetsov-Ma Breather in an Optical Fiber

Optical rogue waves and its variants have been studied quite extensively in the context of optical fiber in recent years. It has been realized that dispersion management in optical fiber is experimentally much more feasible compared to its nonlinear counterpart. In this work, we report Kuznetsov-Ma (KM)-like breathers from the first three orders of rational solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic modulation of the dispersion coefficient along the fiber axis. The breather dynamics are then controlled by proper choice of modulating parameters. Additionally, the evolution of new one-peak and two-peak breather-like solutions has been displayed corresponding to the second-order rational solution. Direct numerical simulations based on modulational instability has also been executed which agree well with the analytical results, thereby making the proposed system more feasible for experimental realization.

Delayed sudden death of entanglement at exceptional points

Almost a decade ago, physicists encountered a strange quantum phenomenon that predicts an unusual death of entanglement under the influence of local noisy environment, known as entanglement sudden death (ESD). This could be an immediate stumbling block in realizing all the entanglement based quantum information and computation protocols. In this work, we propose a scheme to tackle such shortcomings by exploiting the phenomenon of exceptional points (EP). Starting with a binary mechanical $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric system, realized over an optomechanical platform, we show that a substantial delay in ESD can be achieved via pushing the system towards an exceptional point. This finding has been further extended to higher (third) order exceptional point by considering a more complicated tripartite entanglement into account.

Transitionless quantum driving based wireless power transfer

Shortcut to adiabaticity (STA) techniques have the potential to drive a system beyond the adiabatic limits. Here, we present a robust and efficient method for wireless power transfer (WPT) between two coils based on the so-called transitionless quantum driving (TQD) algorithm. We show that it is possible to transfer power between the coils significantly fast compared to its adiabatic counterpart. The scheme is fairly robust against the variations in the coupling strength and the coupling distance between the coils. Also, the scheme is found to be reasonably immune to intrinsic losses in the coils.

Efficient shortcut techniques in evanescently coupled waveguides

Shortcut to Adiabatic Passage (SHAPE) technique, in the context of coherent control of atomic systems has gained considerable attention in last few years. It is primarily because of its ability to manipulate population among the quantum states infinitely fast compared to the adiabatic processes. Two methods in this regard have been explored rigorously, namely the transitionless quantum driving and the Lewis-Reisenfeld invariant approach. We have applied these two methods to realize SHAPE in adiabatic waveguide coupler. Waveguide couplers are integral components of photonic circuits, primarily used as switching devices. Our study shows that with appropriate engineering of the coupling coefficient and propagation constants of the coupler it is possible to achieve efficient and complete power switching. We also observed that the coupler length could be reduced significantly without affecting the coupling efficiency of the system.

Enhanced terahertz transmission through a periodic array of tapered rectangular apertures

We numerically analyse extraordinary terahertz transmission properties of an array of rectangular shaped apertures perforated periodically on a thin metal film. The apertures are tapered at different angles to achieve higher field concentration at the tapered end. The periodic sub-wavelength scale apertures ensure plasmonic behaviour giving rise to the enhanced transmission of a specific frequency mode decided by the periodicity. We compare results of transmission with the rectangular shaped apertures of same parameters and observe a significant increase in the transmission for the tapered case. We have compared results of our numerical simulations with theory and have found them consistent.

Ground state cooling of micromechanical oscillators in the unresolved sideband regime induced by a quantum well

Ground state cooling of micromechanical oscillator is a paradigmatic goal for observing quantum mechanical effects in cavity optomechanics. We study theoretically the ground state cooling of a mechanical oscillator in an optomechanical cavity in presence of a quantum well placed inside the cavity. Due to mode tailoring in presence of the quantum well, the cavity response gets modified and leads to asymmetric heating and cooling processes. This facilitates the cooling of the mechanical oscillator even in the unresolved-sideband regime, via inhibition of Stokes scattering.

High-Fidelity Entangled Bell States via Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

We present a couple of protocols based on shortcut to adiabaticity techniques for rapid generation of robust entangled Bell states in a system of two two-state systems. Our protocols rely on the so-called transitionless quantum driving (TQD) algorithm and Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant (LRI) method. Both TQD and LRI methods result in high fidelity in population transfer. Our study shows that it is possible to prepare an entangled state in infinitely short time without losing robustness and efficiency.

Single-photon blockade in optomechanical photonic crystal cavity with third-order nonlinearity

Photon statistics in a weakly driven optomechanical photonic crystal cavity, with Kerr-type nonlinearity, is analyzed both analytically and numerically. Single-photon blockade effect is demonstrated via calculations of the zero-time-delay second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}(0)$. The analytical results obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation are in complete conformity with the results obtained through numerical solution of the quantum master equation. The experimental feasibility with state-of-the-art device parameters is discussed. It is observed that photon blockade could be generated at the telecommunication wavelength, even at lower values of the nonlinear susceptibility parameters and in the weak single-photon optomechanical coupling regime. The system is found to be robust against pure dephasing-induced decoherences.

Atom Localization in two and three dimensions via level populations in an M-type atomic system

Schemes for two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) atomic states localization in a five level M-type system using standing-wave laser fields are presented. In the upper two levels of the system we see a `coupled' localization for both 2D and 3D case. Here, the state in which majority of population will be found depends on the sign of the detunings between the upper levels and the intermediate level. The experimental implementation of the scheme using the D2 line of Rb is also proposed. The scheme may be manipulated to achieve subwavelength localization of atoms in one dimension to a spatial width, smaller by a factor of 1000 than the incident wavelength.

Controllable optical bistability and cooling of a mechanical oscillator in a hybrid optomechanical system

We investigate theoretically the effect of optical feedback from a cavity containing an ultracold two level atomic ensemble, on the bistable behavior shown by mean intracavity optical field in an optomechanical cavity resonator. It turns out that the optical bistability can be controlled by tuning the frequency and power of the driving laser and is largely affected by the presence of the atomic ensemble in the feedback cavity. In essence, our work emphasizes the possibility of realization of a controllable optical switch depending on the hybrid interaction, commanding lower threshold power than a single optomechanical cavity. Further, we study the aspect of optomechanical cooling of the mechanical oscillator in this hybrid system and the time evolution of the mean phonon number indicates ground-state cooling of the oscillator in the unresolved sideband regime.

Nonlinear Parity-Time (PT) symmetric closed-form optical quadrimer waveguides: Attractor perspective

We report a study on a closed-form nonlinear parity-time symmetric optical quadrimer waveguides system with a specific coupling scheme. The system yields power saturation behavior in the modes, which may be attributed to the inherent attractor in the system. A detailed analysis has been provided to confirm the attractor aspect of the system. This work also addresses a crucial issue regarding choice of initial conditions while carrying out numerical simulation for such systems.

Optical bistability and cooling of a mechanical oscillator induced by radiation pressure in a hybrid optomechanical system

We investigate theoretically the effect of optical feedback from a cavity containing an ultracold two level atomic ensemble, on the bistable behavior shown by mean intracavity optical field and the ground state cooling effect of the mechanical oscillator in an optomechanical cavity resonator. The optical bistability can be controlled by tuning the frequency and power of the single driving laser as well as by varying the atom-cavity coupling strength in the atomic cavity. Study of the cooling of the mechanical oscillator, in both good and bad cavity limits, reveals that the hybrid system is more efficient in cooling in comparison to a generic optomechanical setup, even at room temperature. In essence, our work emphasizes the impact of the coupling with the atomic cavity on the radiation pressure effects in the optomechanical cavity.

Shortcut to Adiabatic Passage in a Waveguide Coupler with Allen-Eberly scheme

We propose a directional coupler exploiting the framework of adiabatic passage for two level atomic systems with configuration dependent Allen-Eberly scheme. Recently developed shortcut to adiabatic passage method (STA), which uses transitionless quantum driving algorithm, is applied to the coupler. The study shows that it is possible to reduce the device length significantly using STA, keeping the efficiency of power transfer100%.Shortcut approach shows much superiority in terms of robustness and fidelity in power switching compared to the adiabatic one.

Coherent manipulation of four-level double lambda-like atomic system by a train of ultra-short few-cycle-optical pulses

We have demonstrated that near complete coherence can be achieved in a four level double lambda-like systems using a train of ultra-short optical pulses. The effect of the Doppler broadening has been analyzed and a scheme has been proposed for establishing high and uniform coherence across different velocity groups in the atomic ensemble. We have also presented a novel scheme of excitation using chirped pulses and shown that in addition to generating coherence in the system it is possible to alter the translational states of the atoms.

Continuous and discrete Schrodinger systems with PT-symmetric nonlinearities

We investigate the dynamical behavior of continuous and discrete Schrodinger systems exhibiting parity-time (PT) invariant nonlinearities. We show that such equations behave in a fundamentally different fashion than their nonlinear Schrodinger counterparts. In particular, the PT-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger equation can simultaneously support both bright and dark soliton solutions. In addition, we study a two-element discretized version of this PT nonlinear Schrödinger equation. By obtaining the underlying invariants, we show that this system is fully integrable and we identify the PT-symmetry breaking conditions. This arrangement is unique in the sense that the exceptional points are fully dictated by the nonlinearity itself.

We study the propagation of few-cycle optical solitary waves in a nonlinear media under the combined action of quadratic, cubic and quintic nonlinearities in a large phase-mismatched second harmonic (SHG) process. Exact bright and dark soliton solutions to the nonlinear evolution equation for cascaded quadratic media beyond the slowly varying envelope approximations is reported. The analytical solutions obtained are verified through numerical simulations.

High and uniform coherence creation in Doppler broadened double lambda-like atomic system by a train of femtosecond optical pulses

We present a detailed analysis of coherence creation in a four level double lambda-like atomic system using a train of ultra-short few-cycle Gaussian pulses. The effect of the Doppler broadening has been analyzed. It is possible to create high coherence across all the velocity groups in the atomic ensemble using pulses with low repetition frequency. The accumulation of coherence at different radial locations within the atomic beam cross-section as a function of the number of pulses in the train is also reported. We find that pulse train with lower repetition frequencies are able to generate high and nearly uniform coherence in a substantial part of the atomic system.

Modulation instability in nonlinear complex parity-time (PT) symmetric periodic structures

We carry out a modulation instability (MI) analysis in nonlinear complex parity-time (PT) symmetric periodic structures. All the three regimes defined by the PT-symmetry breaking point or threshold, namely, below threshold, at threshold and above threshold are discussed. It is found that MI exists even beyond the PT-symmetry threshold indicating the possible existence of solitons or solitary waves, in conformity with some recent reports. We find that MI does not exist at the PT-symmetry breaking point in the case of normal dispersion below a certain nonlinear threshold. However, in the case of anomalous dispersion regime, MI does exist even at the PT-symmetry breaking point.

Optical trap potential control in N-type four level atoms by femtosecond Gaussian pulses

In this work we present a scheme to control the optical dipole trap potential in an N-type four-level atomic system by using chirped femtosecond Gaussian pulses. The spatial size of the trap can be well controlled by tuning the beam waist of the Gaussian pulse and the detuning frequency. The trapping potential splits with increasing Rabi frequency about the center of the trap, a behavior analogous to the one observed experimentally in the context of trapping of nanoparticles with femtosecond pulses. An attempt is made to explain the physics behind this phenomenon by studying the spatial probability distribution of the atomic populations.

Simultaneous control of optical dipole force and coherence creation by super-Gaussian femtosecond pulses in lambda-like atomic systems

We report a study on the optical dipole force on a beam of neutral three-level like atomic system induced by a femtosecond super-Gaussian pulse. We show that maximum coherence between the ground state |1> and the excited state |2> could be achieved using a train of femtosecond pulses. In addition, it is possible to control the trajectory of the atoms in an atomic beam by using the same scheme. The robustness of the scheme against the variation of the pulse parameters is also investigated.

Ultrafast and selective coherent population transfer in four-level atoms by a single frequency chirped few-cycle pulse

We report and propose a simple scheme to achieve the ultrafast and selective population transfer in four-level atoms by utilizing a single frequency chirped few-cycle pulse. It is demonstrated that the almost complete population may be transferred to the preselected state of atoms just by manipulating the so called chirp offset parameter. The robustness of the scheme against the variation of laser pulse parameters is also investigated. The proposed scheme may also be useful for the selective population transfer in molecules.

Frequency modulated few-cycle optical pulse trains induced controllable ultrafast coherent population oscillations in three-level atomic systems

We report a study on the ultrafast coherent population oscillations (UCPO) in two level atoms induced by the frequency modulated few-cycle optical pulse train. The phenomenon of UCPO is investigated by numerically solving the optical Bloch equations beyond the rotating wave approximation. We demonstrate that the quantum state of the atoms and the frequency of UCPO may be controlled by controlling the number of pulses in the pulse trains and the pulse repetition time respectively. Moreover, the robustness of the population inversion against the variation of the laser pulse parameters is also investigated. The proposed scheme may be useful for the creation of atoms in selected quantum state for desired time duration and may have potential applications in ultrafast optical switching.

Gaussian and sinc shaped few-cycle pulse driven ultrafast coherent population transfer in lambda- like atomic systems

We report and propose a simple scheme to achieve efficient and fast coherent population transfer (CPT) by utilizing either a nonlinearly chirped Gaussian shaped few-cycle laser pulse or an unchirped sinc-shaped few-cycle laser pulse. The proposed scheme is shown to be fairly robust against the variation of the laser parameters such as temporal pulse width, chirp rates, carrier envelope phases and Rabi frequencies. We find that compared to the so-called stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) technique, our scheme for complete population transfer with few-cycle Gaussian shaped laser pulses requires less pulse area.

Modulation instability in nonlinear metamaterials induced by cubic-quintic nonlinearities and higher order dispersive effects

We have investigated modulation instability in metamaterials (MM) with both cubic and quintic nonlinearities, based on a model appropriate for pulse propagation in MMs with cubic-quintic nonlinearities and higher order dispersive effects. We have included loss into account in our analysis and found that loss distorts the sidebands of the MI gain spectrum. We find that the combined effect of cubic-quintic nonlinearity increases the MI gain. The role of higher order nonlinear dispersive effects on MI has been also discussed.

Modulation Instability of Ultrashort Pulses in Quadratic Nonlinear Media beyond the Slowly Varying Envelope Approximation

We report a modulational instability (MI) analysis of a mathematical model appropriate for ultrashort pulses in cascaded quadratic-cubic nonlinear media beyond the so-called slowly varying envelope approximation. Theoretically predicted MI properties are found to be in good agreement with numerical simulation. The study shows the possibility of controlling the generation of MI and formation of solitons in a cascaded quadratic-cubic media in the few cycle regimes. We also find that stable propagation of soliton-like few-cycle pulses in the medium is subject to the fulfilment of the modulation instability criteria.

Optical dipole force on ladder-like three-level atomic systems driven by chirped few-cycle-pulse laser fields

We report a study on the optical dipole force in a ladder like three level atomic systems in the context of coherent population transfer with the chirped few-cycle-pulse laser fields. The phenomenon of coherent population transfer is investigated by numerically solving the appropriate density matrix equations beyond the rotating wave approximation. On the other hand, optical dipole force is calculated by numerically solving the force equation and density matrix equations self-consistently. By analysing the centre-of-mass motion, it is shown that the optical dipole force with chirped pulses may be used for focusing and defocusing of atoms in an atomic beam similar to the near or non-resonant optical dipole force. Moreover, the robustness of the population transfer against the variation of the pulse parameters and the effect of the variation of the Rabi frequencies and the chirp rates on the optical dipole force are also investigated. The proposed scheme may open new perspectives in the focusing and de-focusing of atoms and molecules in an atomic beam, since this scheme mitigates the demand for the generation of transform-limited pulse laser fields at arbitrary frequencies.

Solitary wave solution to the nonlinear evolution equation in cascaded quadratic media beyond the slowly varying envelope approximations

We report exact bright and dark soliton solution to the nonlinear evolution equation derived by Moses and Wise [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 073903, (2006)] for cascaded quadratic media beyond the slowly varying envelope approximations. The integrability aspects of the model are addressed. The traveling wave hypothesis as well as the ansatz method is employed to obtain an exact 1-soliton solution. Both bright and dark soliton solutions are obtained. The corresponding constraint conditions are obtained in order for the soliton solutions to exist.

Optical Force on Two-level Atoms by Few-cycle Pulsed Gaussian Laser field beyond the Rotating Wave Approximation

We report a study on light force on a beam of neutral two-level atoms superimposed upon a few-cycle pulsed Gaussian laser field under both resonant and off-resonant condition. The phenomena of focusing, defocusing and steering of the neutral atoms in the laser field is analysed by solving the optical Bloch equation beyond the rotating wave approximation and the force equation self-consistently .We find that two-level atoms in an atomic beam could be focused and defocused for large, positively and negatively detuned interaction even in the regime of extreme nonlinear optics. The so-called optical potential may be used for stable trapping of the neutral two-level atoms for large positively detuned interaction. This work successfully reproduces some of the features reported in recent experimental and theoretical works.

Ultrafast and efficient coherence creation in Λ-like atomic systems driven by nonlinearly chirped few-cycle pulses

We report an ultrafast and efficient way to create the maximum coherence between the two lower states in a -like atomic systems, driven by two nonlinearly chirped few-cycle pulses. The phenomenon of coherent population trapping and electromagnetically induced population transfer are investigated by solving the appropriate density matrix equations without invoking the rotating wave approximation. The robustness of the scheme for maximum coherence against the variation of the laser parameters are tested numerically. We also demonstrate that the proposed scheme could be used to obtain complete population transfer to an initially empty ground state.

Modulational instability of coupled nonlinear field equations for pulse propagation in a negative index material embedded into a Kerr medium

We have investigated the modulational instability (MI) in a negative index media (NIM) using a new generalized model describing the pulse propagation in a negative index material embedded into a Kerr medium. We have found that one could control the gain of MI in a NIM by tuning the initial electric or magnetic field amplitudes . Our model successfully recovers previously proposed models to describe pulse propagation in NIMs exhibiting Kerr nonlinearity. Moreover it contains a few additional terms connecting both the electric and magnetic field envelopes in a NIM.
