Compact embeddings for fractional super and sub harmonic functions with radial symmetry

We prove compactness of the embeddings in Sobolev spaces for fractional super and sub harmonic functions with radial symmetry. The main tool is a pointwise decay for radially symmetric functions belonging to a function space defined by finite homogeneous Sobolev norm together with finite $L^2$ norm of the Riesz potentials. As a byproduct we prove also existence of maximizers for the interpolation inequalities in Sobolev spaces for radially symmetric fractional super and sub harmonic functions.

Long time dynamics for semirelativistic NLS and Half Wave in arbitrary dimension

We consider the Cauchy problems associated with semirelativistc NLS (sNLS) and half wave (HW). In particular we focus on the following two main questions: local/global Cauchy theory; existence and stability/instability of ground states. In between other results, we prove the existence and stability of ground states for sNLS in the $L^2$ supercritical regime. This is in sharp contrast with the instability of ground states for the corresponding HW, which is also established along the paper, by showing an inflation of norms phenomenon. Concerning the Cauchy theory we show, under radial symmetry assumption the following results: a local existence result in $H^1$ for energy subcritical nonlinearity and a global existence result in the $L^2$ subcritical regime.

On dipolar quantum gases in the unstable regime

We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation arising in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the unstable regime. Two cases are studied: the first when the system is free, the second when gradually a trapping potential is added. In both cases we first focus on the existence and stability/ instability properties of standing waves. Our approach leads to the search of critical points of a constrained functional which is unbounded from below on the constraint. In the free case, by showing that the constrained functional has a so-called {\it mountain pass geometry}, we prove the existence of standing states with least energy, the ground states, and show that any ground state is orbitally unstable. Moreover, when the system is free, we show that small data in the energy space scatter in all regimes, stable and unstable. In the second case, if the trapping potential is small, we prove that two different kind of standing waves appears: one corresponds to a {\it topological local minimizer} of the constrained energy functional and it consists in ground states, the other is again of {\it mountain pass type} but now corresponds to excited states. We also prove that any ground state is a {\it topological local minimizer}. Despite the problem is mass supercritical and the functional unbounded from below, the standing waves associated to the set of ground states turn to be orbitally stable. Actually, from the physical point of view, the introduction of the trapping potential stabilizes the system initially unstable. Related to this we observe that it also creates a gap in the ground state energy level of the system. In addition when the trapping potential is active the presence of standing waves with arbitrary small norm does not permit small data scattering. Eventually some asymptotic results are also given.

Ground states for semi-relativistic Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater energies

We prove the existence of ground states for the semi-relativistic Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater energy $$I^{α,β}(ρ)=\inf_{\substack{u\in H^\frac 12(\R^3) \int_{\R^3}|u|^2 dx=ρ}} \frac{1}{2}\|u\|^2_{H^\frac 12(\R^3)} +α\int\int_{\R^{3}\times\R^{3}} \frac{| u(x)|^{2}|u(y)|^2}{|x-y|}dxdy-β\int_{\R^{3}}|u|^{\frac{8}{3}}dx$$ $α,β>0$ and $ρ>0$ is small enough. The minimization problem is $L^2$ critical and in order to characterize of the values $α, β>0$ such that $I^{α, β}(ρ)>-\infty$ for every $ρ>0$, we prove a new lower bound on the Coulomb energy involving the kinetic energy and the exchange energy. We prove the existence of a constant $S>0$ such that $$\frac{1}{S}\frac{\|φ\|_{L^\frac 83(\R^3)}}{\|φ\|_{\dot H^\frac 12(\R^3)}^\frac 12}\leq \left (\int\int_{\R^3\times \R^3} \frac{|φ(x)|^2|φ(y)|^2}{|x-y|}dxdy\right)^\frac 18 $$ for all $φ\in C^\infty_0(\R^3)$. Eventually we show that similar compactness property fails provided that in the energy above we replace the inhomogeneous Sobolev norm $\|u\|^2_{H^\frac 12(\R^3)}$ by the homogeneous one $\|u\|_{\dot H^\frac 12(\R^3)}$.

Existence of ground states for negative ions at the binding threshold

As the nuclear charge Z is continuously decreased an N-electron atom undergoes a binding-unbinding transition at some critical Z_c. We investigate whether the electrons remain bound when Z=Z_c and whether the radius of the system stays finite as Z_c is approached. Existence of a ground state at Z_c is shown under the condition Z_c<N-K, where K is the maximal number of electrons that can be removed at Z_c without changing the ground state energy.

Multi-solitary waves for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

We consider the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in $\R^d$. We call multi-solitary waves a solution behaving at large time as a sum of boosted standing waves. Our main result is the existence of such multi-solitary waves, provided the composing boosted standing waves are stable. It is obtained by solving the equation backward in time around a sequence of approximate multi-solitary waves and showing convergence to a solution with the desired property. The main ingredients of the proof are finite speed of propagation, variational characterizations of the profiles, modulation theory and energy estimates.

Existence and instability of standing waves with prescribed norm for a class of Schrödinger-Poisson equations

In this paper we study the existence and the instability of standing waves with prescribed $L^2$-norm for a class of Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater equations in $\R^{3}$ %orbitally stable standing waves with arbitray charge for the following Schrödinger-Poisson type equation \label{evolution1} iψ_{t}+ Δψ- (|x|^{-1}*|ψ|^{2}) ψ+|ψ|^{p-2}ψ=0 % \text{in} \R^{3}, when $p \in (10/3,6)$. To obtain such solutions we look to critical points of the energy functional $$F(u)=1/2| \triangledown u|_{L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^3)}^2+1/4\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}\frac{|u(x)|^2| u(y)|^2}{|x-y|}dxdy-\frac{1}{p}\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}|u|^pdx $$ on the constraints given by $$S(c)= \{u \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^3) :|u|_{L^2(\R^3)}^2=c, c>0}.$$ For the values $p \in (10/3, 6)$ considered, the functional $F$ is unbounded from below on $S(c)$ and the existence of critical points is obtained by a mountain pass argument developed on $S(c)$. We show that critical points exist provided that $c>0$ is sufficiently small and that when $c>0$ is not small a non-existence result is expected. Concerning the dynamics we show for initial condition $u_0\in H^1(\R^3)$ of the associated Cauchy problem with $|u_0|_{2}^2=c$ that the mountain pass energy level $γ(c)$ gives a threshold for global existence. Also the strong instability of standing waves at the mountain pass energy level is proved. Finally we draw a comparison between the Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater equation and the classical nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

On the existence of hylomorphic vortices in the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

In this paper we prove the existence of vortices, namely standing waves with non null angular momentum, for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in dimension $N\geq 3$. We show with variational methods that the existence of these kind of solutions, that we have called \emph{hylomorphic vortices}, depends on a suitable energy-charge ratio. Our variational approach turns out to be useful for numerical investigations as well. In particular, some results in dimension N=2 are reported, namely exemplificative vortex profiles by varying charge and angular momentum, together with relevant trends for vortex frequency and energy-charge ratio. The stability problem for hylomorphic vortices is also addressed. In the absence of conclusive analytical results, vortex evolution is numerically investigated: the obtained results suggest that, contrarily to solitons with null angular momentum, vortex are unstable.

On translation invariant constrained minimization problems with application to Schrödinger-Poisson equation

In this paper we study the existence of minimizers for a class of constrained minimization problems that are invariant under translations. We call $$I_{ρ^{2}}:=\inf_{B_ρ}I(u) \ $$ where $B_ρ=\{u\in H^{m}(\R^{N}):\|u\|_{2}=ρ\},$ and $I(u)=1/2\|u\|^{2}_{D^{m,2}}+T(u)$, $T$ fulfilling general assumptions. We show that the regularity of the function $$(0,\infty)\ni s \mapsto I_{s^2}\,$$ and the behaviour of $\frac{I_{s^2}}{s^2}$ in the neighborhood of zero allows to prove the strong subadditivity inequality. As byproduct the strong convergence of the minimizing sequences (up to translations) is proved. We give an application to the energy functional $I$ associated to the Schrödinger-Poisson equation in $\R^{3}$ orbitally stable standing waves with arbitray charge for the following Schrödinger-Poisson type equation \label{SP} iψ_{t}+ Δψ- (|x|^{-1}*|ψ|^{2}) ψ+|ψ|^{p-2}ψ=0 \text{in} \R^{3}, \text{with} \ 2<p<3. When $2<p<3$, In particular we prove that $I$ achieves its minimum on the constraint $\{u\in H^{1}(\R^{3}): \|u\|_{2}=ρ\}$ for every $ρ>0$ and, as a consequence, the set of minimizers is orbitally stable. This covers the physically relevant case, $p=8/3$, the so called Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater system.

Periodic orbits of a one dimensional non autonomous Hamiltonian system

In this paper we study the properties of the periodic orbits of x + V'_x(t, x) = 0 with x \in S1 and V(t, x) a T0 periodic potential. Called ρ \in (1/T0)Q the frequency of windings of an orbit in S1 we show that exists an infinite number of periodic solutions with a given ρ. We give a lower bound on the number of periodic orbits with a given period and ρ by means of the Morse theory.

Stable standing waves for a class of nonlinear Schroedinger-Poisson equations

We prove the existence of orbitally stable standing waves with prescribed $L^2$-norm for the following Schrödinger-Poisson type equation \label{intro} %{%{ll} iψ_{t}+ Δψ- (|x|^{-1}*|ψ|^{2}) ψ+|ψ|^{p-2}ψ=0 \text{in} \R^{3}, %-Δϕ= |ψ|^{2}& \text{in} \R^{3},%. when $p\in \{8/3\}\cup (3,10/3)$. In the case $3<p<10/3$ we prove the existence and stability only for sufficiently large $L^2$-norm. In case $p=8/3$ our approach recovers the result of Sanchez and Soler \cite{SS} %concerning the existence and stability for sufficiently small charges. The main point is the analysis of the compactness of minimizing sequences for the related constrained minimization problem. In a final section a further application to the Schrödinger equation involving the biharmonic operator is given.
