Energy cutoff, effective theories, noncommutativity, fuzzyness: the case of O(D)-covariant fuzzy spheres

Projecting a quantum theory onto the Hilbert subspace of states with energies below a cutoff $\overline{E}$ may lead to an effective theory with modified observables, including a noncommutative space(time). Adding a confining potential well $V$ with a very sharp minimum on a submanifold $N$ of the original space(time) $M$ may induce a dimensional reduction to a noncommutative quantum theory on $N$. Here in particular we briefly report on our application of this procedure to spheres $S^d\subset\mathbb{R}^D$ of radius $r=1$ ($D=d\!+\!1>1$): making $\overline{E}$ and the depth of the well depend on (and diverge with) $Λ\in\mathbb{N}$ we obtain new fuzzy spheres $S^d_Λ$ covariant under the {\it full} orthogonal groups $O(D)$; the commutators of the coordinates depend only on the angular momentum, as in Snyder noncommutative spaces. Focusing on $d=1,2$, we also discuss uncertainty relations, localization of states, diagonalization of the space coordinates and construction of coherent states. As $Λ\to\infty$ the Hilbert space dimension diverges, $S^d_Λ\to S^d$, and we recover ordinary quantum mechanics on $S^d$. These models might be suggestive for effective models in quantum field theory, quantum gravity or condensed matter physics.

On localized and coherent states on some new fuzzy spheres

We construct various systems of coherent states (SCS) on the $O(D)$-equivariant fuzzy spheres $S^d_Λ$ ($d=1,2$, $D=d\!+\!1$) constructed in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451] and study their localizations in configuration space as well as angular momentum space. These localizations are best expressed through the $O(D)$-invariant square space and angular momentum uncertainties $(Δ\boldsymbol{x})^2,(Δ\boldsymbol{L})^2$ in the ambient Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^D$. We also determine general bounds (e.g. uncertainty relations from commutation relations) for $(Δ\boldsymbol{x})^2,(Δ\boldsymbol{L})^2$, and partly investigate which SCS may saturate these bounds. In particular, we determine $O(D)$-equivariant systems of optimally localized coherent states, which are the closest quantum states to the classical states (i.e. points) of $S^d$. We compare the results with their analogs on commutative $S^d$. We also show that on $S^2_Λ$ our optimally localized states are better localized than those on the Madore-Hoppe fuzzy sphere with the same cutoff $Λ$.

On second quantization on noncommutative spaces with twisted symmetries

By application of the general twist-induced star-deformation procedure we translate second quantization of a system of bosons/fermions on a symmetric spacetime in a non-commutative language. The procedure deforms in a coordinated way the spacetime algebra and its symmetries, the wave-mechanical description of a system of n bosons/fermions, the algebra of creation and annihilation operators and also the commutation relations of the latter with functions of spacetime; our key requirement is the mode-decomposition independence of the quantum field. In a conservative view, the use of noncommutative coordinates can be seen just as a way to better express non-local interactions of a special kind. In a non-conservative one, we obtain a covariant framework for QFT on the corresponding noncommutative spacetime consistent with quantum mechanical axioms and Bose-Fermi statistics. One distinguishing feature is that the field commutation relations remain of the type "field (anti)commutator=a distribution". We illustrate the results by choosing as examples interacting non-relativistic and free relativistic QFT on Moyal space(time)s.

The $x_i$-eigenvalue problem on some new fuzzy spheres

We study the eigenvalue equation for the 'Cartesian coordinates' observables $x_i$ on the fully $O(2)$-covariant fuzzy circle $\{S^1_Λ\}_{Λ\in\mathbb{N}}$ ($i=1,2$) and on the fully $O(3)$-covariant fuzzy 2-sphere $\{S^2_Λ\}_{Λ\in\mathbb{N}}$ ($i=1,2,3$) introduced in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451]. We show that the spectrum and eigenvectors of $x_i$ fulfill a number of properties which are expected for $x_i$ to approximate well the corresponding coordinate operator of a quantum particle forced to stay on the unit sphere.

A "slingshot" laser-driven acceleration mechanism of plasma electrons

We briefly report on the recently proposed [G. Fiore, R. Fedele, U. de Angelis, Phys. Plasmas 21 (2014), 113105], [G. Fiore, S. De Nicola, arXiv:1509.04656] electron acceleration mechanism named "slingshot effect": under suitable conditions the impact of an ultra-short and ultra-intense laser pulse against the surface of a low-density plasma is expected to cause the expulsion of a bunch of superficial electrons with high energy in the direction opposite to that of the pulse propagation; this is due to the interplay of the huge ponderomotive force, huge longitudinal field arising from charge separation, and the finite size of the laser spot.

preprint2016arXiv

Simple model of the slingshot effect

We present a detailed quantitative description of the recently proposed "slingshot effect" [Fiore, Fedele, De angelis 2014]. Namely, we determine a broad range of conditions under which the impact of a very short and intense laser pulse normally onto a low-density plasma (or matter to be locally completely ionized into a plasma by the pulse) causes the expulsion of a bunch of surface electrons in the direction opposite to the one of propagation of the pulse, and the detailed, ready-for-experiments features of the expelled electrons (energy spectrum, collimation, etc). The effect is due to the combined actions of the ponderomotive force and the huge longitudinal field arising from charge separation. Our predictions are based on estimating 3D corrections to a simple, yet powerful plane magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model where the equations to be solved are reduced to a system of Hamilton equations in one dimension (or a collection of) which become autonomous after the pulse has overcome the electrons. Experimental tests seem to be at hand. If confirmed by the latter, the effect would provide a new extraction and acceleration mechanism for electrons, alternative to traditional radio-frequency-based or Laser-Wake-Field ones.

On kinks and other travelling-wave solutions of a modified sine-Gordon equation

We give an exhaustive, non-perturbative classification of exact travelling-wave solutions of a perturbed sine-Gordon equation (on the real line or on the circle) which is used to describe the Josephson effect in the theory of superconductors and other remarkable physical phenomena. The perturbation of the equation consists of a constant forcing term and a linear dissipative term. On the real line candidate orbitally stable solutions with bounded energy density are either the constant one, or of kink (i.e. soliton) type, or of array-of-kinks type, or of "half-array-of-kinks" type. While the first three have unperturbed analogs, the last type is essentially new. We also propose a convergent method of successive approximations of the (anti)kink solution based on a careful application of the fixed point theorem.

On plane waves in diluted relativistic cold plasmas

We briefly report on some exact results [G. Fiore, arXiv:1312.4665 preprint, to appear in J. Phys. A] regarding plane waves in a relativistic cold plasma. If the plasma, initially at rest, is reached by a transverse plane electromagnetic travelling-wave, then its motion has a very simple dependence on this wave in the limit of zero density, otherwise can be determined by an iterative procedure whose accuracy decreases with time or the plasma density. Thus one can describe in particular the impact of a very intense and short laser pulse onto a plasma and determine conditions for the "slingshot effect" [G. Fiore, R. Fedele, U. De Angelis, arXiv:1309.1400 preprint] to occur. The motion in vacuum of a charged test particle subject to a wave of the same kind is also determined, for any initial velocity.

preprint2014arXiv

On plane-wave relativistic electrodynamics in plasmas and in vacuum

We revisit the exact microscopic equations (in differential, and equivalent integral form) ruling a relativistic cold plasma after the plane-wave Ansatz, without customary approximations. We show that in the Eulerian description the motion of a very diluted plasma initially at rest and excited by an arbitrary transverse plane electromagnetic travelling-wave has a very simple and explicit dependence on the transverse electromagnetic potential; for a non-zero density plasma the above motion is a good approximation of the real one as long as the back-reaction of the charges on the electromagnetic field can be neglected, i.e. for a time lapse decreasing with the plasma density, and can be used as initial step in an iterative resolution scheme. As one of many possible applications, we use these results to describe how the ponderomotive force of a very intense and short plane laser pulse hitting normally the surface of a plasma boosts the surface electrons into the ion background. Because of this penetration the electrons are then pulled back by the electric force exerted by the ions and may leave the plasma with high energy in the direction opposite to that of propagation of the pulse [G. Fiore, R. Fedele, U. De Angelis, "The slingshot effect: a possible new laser-driven high energy acceleration mechanism for electrons", arXiv:1309.1400].

preprint2014arXiv

The slingshot effect: a possible new laser-driven high energy acceleration mechanism for electrons

We show that under appropriate conditions the impact of a very short and intense laser pulse onto a plasma causes the expulsion of surface electrons with high energy in the direction opposite to the one of propagation of the pulse. This is due to the combined effects of the ponderomotive force and the huge longitudinal field arising from charge separation ("slingshot effect"). The effect should also be present with other states of matter, provided the pulse is sufficiently intense to locally cause complete ionization. An experimental test seems to be feasible and, if confirmed, would provide a new extraction and acceleration mechanism for electrons, alternative to traditional radio-frequency-based or Laser-Wake-Field ones.

On quantum mechanics with a magnetic field on R^n and on a torus T^n, and their relation

We show in elementary terms the equivalence in a general gauge of a U(1)-gauge theory of a scalar charged particle on a torus T^n = R^n/L to the analogous theory on R^n constrained by quasiperiodicity under translations in the lattice L. The latter theory provides a global description of the former: the quasiperiodic wavefunctions defined on R^n play the role of sections of the associated hermitean line bundle E on T^n, since also E admits a global description as a quotient. The components of the covariant derivatives corresponding to a constant (necessarily integral) magnetic field B = dA generate a Lie algebra g_Q and together with the periodic functions the algebra of observables O_Q . The non-abelian part of g_Q is a Heisenberg Lie algebra with the electric charge operator Q as the central generator; the corresponding Lie group G_Q acts on the Hilbert space as the translation group up to phase factors. Also the space of sections of E is mapped into itself by g in G_Q . We identify the socalled magnetic translation group as a subgroup of the observables' group Y_Q . We determine the unitary irreducible representations of O_Q, Y_Q corresponding to integer charges and for each of them an associated orthonormal basis explicitly in configuration space. We also clarify how in the n = 2m case a holomorphic structure and Theta functions arise on the associated complex torus. These results apply equally well to the physics of charged scalar particles on R^n and on T^n in the presence of periodic magnetic field B and scalar potential. They are also necessary preliminary steps for the application to these theories of the deformation procedure induced by Drinfel'd twists.

Existence and uniqueness of solutions of a class of 3rd order dissipative problems with various boundary conditions describing the Josephson effect

We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions of a large class of initial-boundary-value problems characterized by a quasi-linear third order equation (the third order term being dissipative) on a finite space interval with Dirichlet, Neumann or pseudoperiodic boundary conditions. The class includes equations arising in superconductor theory, such as a well-known modified sine-Gordon equation describing the Josephson effect, and in the theory of viscoelastic materials.

Class of invariants for the 2D time-dependent Landau problem and harmonic oscillator in a magnetic field

We consider an isotropic two dimensional harmonic oscillator with arbitrarily time-dependent mass $M(t)$ and frequency $Ω(t)$ in an arbitrarily time-dependent magnetic field $B(t)$. We determine two commuting invariant observables (in the sense of Lewis and Riesenfeld) $L,I$ in terms of some solution of an auxiliary ordinary differential equation and an orthonormal basis of the Hilbert space consisting of joint eigenvectors $ϕ_λ$ of $L,I$. We then determine time-dependent phases $α_λ(t)$ such that the $ψ_λ(t)=e^{iα_λ}ϕ_λ$ are solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and make up an orthonormal basis of the Hilbert space. These results apply, in particular to a two dimensional Landau problem with time-dependent $M,B$, which is obtained from the above just by setting $Ω(t) \equiv 0$. By a mere redefinition of the parameters, these results can be applied also to the analogous models on the canonical non-commutative plane.

preprint2010arXiv

Noncommutative spaces with twisted symmetries and second quantization

In a minimalistic view, the use of noncommutative coordinates can be seen just as a way to better express non-local interactions of a special kind: 1-particle solutions (wavefunctions) of the equation of motion in the presence of an external field may look simpler as functions of noncommutative coordinates. It turns out that also the wave-mechanical description of a system of n such bosons/fermions and its second quantization is simplified if we translate them in terms of their deformed counterparts. The latter are obtained by a general twist-induced *-deformation procedure which deforms in a coordinated way not just the spacetime algebra, but the larger algebra generated by any number n of copies of the spacetime coordinates and by the particle creation and annihilation operators. On the deformed algebra the action of the original spacetime transformations looks twisted. In a non-conservative view, we thus obtain a twisted covariant framework for QFT on the corresponding noncommutative spacetime consistent with quantum mechanical axioms and Bose-Fermi statistics. One distinguishing feature is that the field commutation relations remain of the type "field (anti)commutator=a distribution". We illustrate the results by choosing as examples interacting non-relativistic and free relativistic QFT on Moyal space(time)s.

Stability properties for some non-autonomous dissipative phenomena proved by families of Liapunov functionals

We prove some new results regarding the boundedness, stability and attractivity of the solutions of a class of initial-boundary-value problems characterized by a quasi-linear third order equation which may contain time-dependent coefficients. The class includes equations arising in Superconductor Theory, and in the Theory of Viscoelastic Materials. In the proof we use a family of Liapunov functionals W depending on two parameters, which we adapt to the `error', i.e. to the size of the chosen neighbourhood of the null solution.

Can QFT on Moyal-Weyl spaces look as on commutative ones?

We sketch a natural affirmative answer to the question based on a joint work [11] with J. Wess. There we argue that a proper enforcement of the "twisted Poincare'" covariance makes any differences $(x-y)^μ$ of coordinates of two copies of the Moyal-Weyl deformation of Minkowski space like undeformed. Then QFT in an operator approach becomes compatible with (minimally adapted) Wightman axioms and time-ordered perturbation theory, and physically equivalent to ordinary QFT, as observables involve only coordinate differences.

q-Deformed su(2) instantons by q-quaternions

Interpreting the coordinates of the quantum Euclidean space R_q^4 [the SO_q(4)-covariant noncommutative space] as the entries of a ``q-quaternion matrix'' we construct (anti)instanton solutions of a would-be q-deformed su(2) Yang-Mills theory on R_q^4. Since the (anti)selfduality equations are covariant under the quantum group of deformed rotations, translations and scale change, by applying the latter we can respectively generate ``gauge equivalent'' or ``inequivalent'' solutions from the one centered at the origin and with unit size. We also construct multi-instanton solutions. As these solutions depend on noncommuting parameters playing the roles of `sizes' and `coordinates of the centers' of the instantons, this indicates that the moduli space of a complete theory should be a noncommutative manifold. Similarly, as the (global) gauge transformations relating ``gauge equivalent'' solutions depend on the generators of two copies of SU_q(2), this suggests that gauge transformations should be allowed to depend on additional noncommutative parameters.

Some explicit travelling-wave solutions of a perturbed sine-Gordon equation

We present in closed form some special travelling-wave solutions (on the real line or on the circle) of a perturbed sine-Gordon equation. The perturbation of the equation consists of a constant forcing term $γ$ and a linear dissipative term, and the equation is used to describe the Josephson effect in the theory of superconductors and other remarkable physical phenomena. We determine all travelling-wave solutions with unit velocity (in dimensionless units). For $|γ|$ not larger than 1 we find families of solutions that are all (except the obvious constant one) manifestly unstable, whereas for $|γ|>1$ we find families of stable solutions describing each an array of evenly spaced kinks.

On the hermiticity of q-differential operators and forms on the quantum Euclidean spaces R_q^N

We show that the complicated *-structure characterizing for positive q the U_qso(N)-covariant differential calculus on the non-commutative manifold R_q^N boils down to similarity transformations involving the ribbon element of a central extension of U_qso(N) and its formal square root v. Subspaces of the spaces of functions and of p-forms on R_q^N are made into Hilbert spaces by introducing non-conventional ``weights'' in the integrals defining the corresponding scalar products, namely suitable positive-definite q-pseudodifferential operators realizing the action of v^{\pm 1}; this serves to make the partial q-derivatives antihermitean and the exterior coderivative equal to the hermitean conjugate of the exterior derivative, as usual. There is a residual freedom in the choice of the weight m(r) along the `radial coordinate' r. Unless we choose a constant m, then the square-integrables functions/forms must fulfill an additional condition, namely their analytic continuations to the complex r plane can have poles only on the sites of some special lattice. Among the functions naturally selected by this condition there are q-special functions with `quantized' free parameters.

q-Quaternions and deformed su(2) instantons on the quantum Euclidean space R_q^4

We briefly report on our recent results regarding the introduction of a notion of a q-quaternion and the construction of instanton solutions of a would-be deformed su(2) Yang-Mills theory on the corresponding SO_q(4)-covariant quantum space. As the solutions depend on some noncommuting parameters, this indicates that the moduli space of a complete theory will be a noncommutative manifold.

Towards soliton solutions of a perturbed sine-Gordon equation

We give arguments for the existence of {\it exact} travelling-wave (in particular solitonic) solutions of a perturbed sine-Gordon equation on the real line or on the circle, and classify them. The perturbation of the equation consists of a constant forcing term and a linear dissipative term. Such solutions are allowed exactly by the energy balance of these terms, and can be observed experimentally e.g. in the Josephson effect in the theory of superconductors, which is one of the physical phenomena described by the equation.

Quantum group covariant (anti)symmetrizers, epsilon-tensors, vielbein, Hodge map and Laplacian

GL_q(N)- and SO_q(N)-covariant deformations of the completely symmetric/antisymmetric projectors with an arbitrary number of indices are explicitly constructed as polynomials in the braid matrices. The precise relation between the completely antisymmetric projectors and the completely antisymmetric tensor is determined. Adopting the GL_q(N)- and SO_q(N)-covariant differential calculi on the corresponding quantum group covariant noncommutative spaces C_q^N, R_q^N, we introduce a generalized notion of vielbein basis (or "frame"), based on differential-operator-valued 1-forms. We then give a thorough definition of a SO_q(N)-covariant R_q^N-bilinear Hodge map acting on the bimodule of differential forms on R_q^N, introduce the exterior coderivative and show that the Laplacian acts on differential forms exactly as in the undeformed case, namely it acts on each component as it does on functions.

On the Decoupling of the Homogeneous and Inhomogeneous Parts in Inhomogeneous Quantum Groups

We show that, if there exists a realization of a Hopf algebra $H$ in a $H$-module algebra $A$, then one can split their cross-product into the tensor product algebra of $A$ itself with a subalgebra isomorphic to $H$ and commuting with $A$. This result applies in particular to the algebra underlying inhomogeneous quantum groups like the Euclidean ones, which are obtained as cross-products of the quantum Euclidean spaces $R_q^N$ with the quantum groups of rotation $U_qso(N)$ of $R_q^N$, for which it has no classical analog.

The Geometry of the Quantum Euclidean Space

A detailed study is made of the noncommutative geometry of $R^3_q$, the quantum space covariant under the quantum group $SO_q(3)$. For each of its two $SO_q(3)$-covariant differential calculi we find its metric, the corresponding frame and two torsion-free covariant derivatives that are metric compatible up to a conformal factor and which yield both a vanishing linear curvature. A discussion is given of various ways of imposing reality conditions. The delicate issue of the commutative limit is discussed at the formal algebraic level. Two rather different ways of taking the limit are suggested, yielding respectively $S^2\times R$ and $R^3$ as the limit Riemannian manifold.

Drinfel'd Twist and q-Deforming Maps for Lie Group Covariant Heisenberg Algebras

Any deformation of a Weyl or Clifford algebra can be realized through a change of generators in the undeformed algebra. q-Deformations of Weyl or Clifford algebrae that were covariant under the action of a simple Lie algebra g are characterized by their being covariant under the action of the quantum group $U_q g$. We present a systematic procedure for determining all possible corresponding changes of generators, together with the corresponding realizations of the $U_q g$-action. The intriguing relation between g-invariants and $U_q g$-invariants suggests that these changes of generators might be employed to simplify the dynamics of some g-covariant quantum physical systems.

Embedding q-deformed Heisenberg Algebras into Undeformed Ones

Any deformation of a Weyl or Clifford algebra can be realized through some change of generators in the undeformed algebra. Here we briefly describe and motivate our systematic procedure for constructing all such changes of generators for those particular deformations where the original algebra is covariant undersome Lie group and the deformed algebra is covariant under the corresponding quantum group.

The Euclidean Hopf algebra $U_q(e^N)$ and its fundamental Hilbert space representations

We construct the Euclidean Hopf algebra $U_q(e^N)$ dual of $Fun(\rn_q^N\lcross SO_{q^{-1}}(N))$ by realizing it as a subalgebra of the differential algebra $\DFR$ on the quantum Euclidean space $\rn_q^N$; in fact, we extend our previous realization \cite{fio4} of $U_{q^{-1}}(so(N))$ within $\DFR$ through the introduction of q-derivatives as generators of q-translations. The fundamental Hilbert space representations of $U_q(e^N)$ turn out to be of highest weight type and rather simple `` lattice-regularized '' versions of the classical ones. The vectors of a basis of the singlet (i.e. zero-spin) irrep can be realized as normalizable functions on $\rn_q^N$, going to distributions in the limit $q\rightarrow 1$.

The q-Euclidean algebra $U_q(e^N)$ and the corresponding q-Euclidean lattice

We review the Euclidean Hopf algebra $U_q(e^N)$ dual of $Fun(\rn_q^N\lcross SO_{q^{-1}}(N))$ and describe its fundamental Hilbert space representations \cite{fioeu}, which turn out to be rather simple "lattice-regularized" versions of the classical ones, in the sense that the spectra of squared momentum components are discrete and the corresponding eigenfunctions normalizable. These representations can be regarded as describing a quantum system consisting of one free particle on the quantum Euclidean space. A suitable notion of classical limit is introduced, so that we recover the classical continuous spectra and generalized (non-normalizable) eigenfunctions in that limit.

Realization of $U_q(so(N))$ within the differntial algebra on ${\bf R}_q^N$

We realize the Hopf algebra $U_{q^{-1}}(so(N))$ as an algebra of differential operators on the quantum Euclidean space ${\bf R}_q^N$. The generators are suitable q-deformed analogs of the angular momentum components on ordinary ${\bf R}^N$. The algebra $Fun({\bf R}_q^N)$ of functions on ${\bf R}_q^N$ splits into a direct sum of irreducible vector representations of $U_{q^{-1}}(so(N))$; the latter are explicitly constructed as highest weight representations.

The $SO_q(N,{\bf R})$-Symmetric Harmonic Oscillator on the Quantum Euclidean Space ${\bf R}_q^N$ and its Hilbert Space Structure

We show that the isotropic harmonic oscillator in the ordinary euclidean space ${\bf R}^N$ ($N\ge 3$) admits a natural q-deformation into a new quantum mechanical model having a q-deformed symmetry (in the sense of quantum groups), $SO_q(N,{\bf R})$. The q-deformation is the consequence of replacing $ R^N$ by ${\bf R}^N_q$ (the corresponding quantum space). This provides an example of quantum mechanics on a noncommutative geometrical space. To reach the goal, we also have to deal with a sensible definition of integration over ${\bf R}^N_q$, which we use for the definition of the scalar product of states.
