O(D)−O(D)-equivariant fuzzy hyperspheres

Fuzzy hyperspheres SΛdS^d_Λ of dimension d>2d>2 are constructed here generalizing the procedure adopted in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451] for d=1,2d=1,2. The starting point is an ordinary quantum particle in RD\mathbb{R}^D, D:=d+1D:=d+1, subject to a rotation invariant potential well V(r)V(r) with a very sharp minimum on the sphere of radius r=1r=1. The subsequent imposition of a sufficiently low energy cutoff `freezes' the radial excitations, this makes only a finite-dimensional Hilbert subspace HΛ,D\mathcal{H}_{Λ,D} accessible and on it the coordinates noncommutative {\it à la Snyder}. In addition, the coordinate operators generate the whole algebra of observables AΛ,D\mathcal{A}_{Λ,D} which turns out to be realizable through a suitable irreducible vector representation of Uso(D+1)Uso(D+1). This construction is equivariant not only under SO(D)SO(D), but under the full orthogonal group O(D)O(D), and making the cutoff and the depth of the well grow with a natural number ΛΛ, the result is a sequence SΛdS^d_Λ of fuzzy spheres converging to SdS^d as Λ→∞Λ\to\infty (where one recovers ordinary quantum mechanics on SdS^d).

Energy cutoff, effective theories, noncommutativity, fuzzyness: the case of O(D)-covariant fuzzy spheres

Projecting a quantum theory onto the Hilbert subspace of states with energies below a cutoff E‾\overline{E} may lead to an effective theory with modified observables, including a noncommutative space(time). Adding a confining potential well VV with a very sharp minimum on a submanifold NN of the original space(time) MM may induce a dimensional reduction to a noncommutative quantum theory on NN. Here in particular we briefly report on our application of this procedure to spheres Sd⊂RDS^d\subset\mathbb{R}^D of radius r=1r=1 (D=d ⁣+ ⁣1>1D=d\!+\!1>1): making E‾\overline{E} and the depth of the well depend on (and diverge with) Λ∈NΛ\in\mathbb{N} we obtain new fuzzy spheres SΛdS^d_Λ covariant under the {\it full} orthogonal groups O(D)O(D); the commutators of the coordinates depend only on the angular momentum, as in Snyder noncommutative spaces. Focusing on d=1,2d=1,2, we also discuss uncertainty relations, localization of states, diagonalization of the space coordinates and construction of coherent states. As Λ→∞Λ\to\infty the Hilbert space dimension diverges, SΛd→SdS^d_Λ\to S^d, and we recover ordinary quantum mechanics on SdS^d. These models might be suggestive for effective models in quantum field theory, quantum gravity or condensed matter physics.

On localized and coherent states on some new fuzzy spheres

We construct various systems of coherent states (SCS) on the O(D)O(D)-equivariant fuzzy spheres SΛdS^d_Λ (d=1,2d=1,2, D=d ⁣+ ⁣1D=d\!+\!1) constructed in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451] and study their localizations in configuration space as well as angular momentum space. These localizations are best expressed through the O(D)O(D)-invariant square space and angular momentum uncertainties (Δx)2,(ΔL)2(Δ\boldsymbol{x})^2,(Δ\boldsymbol{L})^2 in the ambient Euclidean space RD\mathbb{R}^D. We also determine general bounds (e.g. uncertainty relations from commutation relations) for (Δx)2,(ΔL)2(Δ\boldsymbol{x})^2,(Δ\boldsymbol{L})^2, and partly investigate which SCS may saturate these bounds. In particular, we determine O(D)O(D)-equivariant systems of optimally localized coherent states, which are the closest quantum states to the classical states (i.e. points) of SdS^d. We compare the results with their analogs on commutative SdS^d. We also show that on SΛ2S^2_Λ our optimally localized states are better localized than those on the Madore-Hoppe fuzzy sphere with the same cutoff ΛΛ.

The xix_i-eigenvalue problem on some new fuzzy spheres

We study the eigenvalue equation for the 'Cartesian coordinates' observables xix_i on the fully O(2)O(2)-covariant fuzzy circle {SΛ1}Λ∈N\{S^1_Λ\}_{Λ\in\mathbb{N}} (i=1,2i=1,2) and on the fully O(3)O(3)-covariant fuzzy 2-sphere {SΛ2}Λ∈N\{S^2_Λ\}_{Λ\in\mathbb{N}} (i=1,2,3i=1,2,3) introduced in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451]. We show that the spectrum and eigenvectors of xix_i fulfill a number of properties which are expected for xix_i to approximate well the corresponding coordinate operator of a quantum particle forced to stay on the unit sphere.
