Measurement of branching fractions and direct $CP$ asymmetries for $B \to Kπ$ and $B\toππ$ decays at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct $\it{CP}$ asymmetries of the decays $B^0 \to K^+ π^-$, $B^+ \to K^+ π^0$, $B^+ \to K^0 π^+$, and $B^0 \to K^0 π^0$, and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct $\it{CP}$ asymmetry of the decay $B^+ \to π^+π^0$ and the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \to π^+π^-$. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain $387\times 10^6$ bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain $-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04$ for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

Measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ branching ratio and $|V_{cb}|$ with a fully reconstructed accompanying $B$ meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e,μ$) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed $B$ meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to 189.3$\,$fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters $η_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}|$ and $ρ^{2}$ are extracted, where $η_{\rm EW}$ is an electroweak correction, $F(1)$ is a normalization factor and $ρ^{2}$ is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%$, $η_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$, and $ρ^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$.

A low-threshold ultrahigh-energy neutrino search with the Askaryan Radio Array

In the pursuit of the measurement of the still-elusive ultrahigh-energy (UHE) neutrino flux at energies of order EeV, detectors using the in-ice Askaryan radio technique have increasingly targeted lower trigger thresholds. This has led to improved trigger-level sensitivity to UHE neutrinos. Working with data collected by the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA), we search for neutrino candidates at the lowest threshold achieved to date, leading to improved analysis-level sensitivities. A neutrino search on a data set with 208.7~days of livetime from the reduced-threshold fifth ARA station is performed, achieving a 68\% analysis efficiency over all energies on a simulated mixed-composition neutrino flux with an expected background of $0.10_{-0.04}^{+0.06}$ events passing the analysis. We observe one event passing our analysis and proceed to set a neutrino flux limit using a Feldman-Cousins construction. We show that the improved trigger-level sensitivity can be carried through an analysis, motivating the Phased Array triggering technique for use in future radio-detection experiments. We also include a projection using all available data from this detector. Finally, we find that future analyses will benefit from studies of events near the surface to fully understand the background expected for a large-scale detector.

Belle II Executive Summary

Belle II is a Super $B$ Factory experiment, expected to record 50 ab$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at the SuperKEKB accelerator until 2035. The large samples of $B$ mesons, charm hadrons, and tau leptons produced in the clean experimental environment of $e^+e^-$ collisions will provide the basis of a broad and unique flavor-physics program. Belle II will pursue physics beyond the Standard Model in many ways, for example: improving the precision of weak interaction parameters, particularly Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and phases, and thus more rigorously test the CKM paradigm, measuring lepton-flavor-violating parameters, and performing unique searches for missing-mass dark matter events. Many key measurements will be made with world-leading precision.

Enhanced low-energy supernova burst detection in large liquid argon time projection chambers enabled by Q-Pix

The detection of neutrinos from core-collapse supernovae may reveal important process features as well as neutrino properties. The detection of supernova neutrinos is one of the main science drivers for future kiloton-scale neutrino detectors based on liquid argon. Here we show that for such detectors the intrinsically 3D readout in Q-Pix offers numerous advantages relative to a wire-based readout, such as higher reconstruction efficiency, lower energy threshold, considerably lower data rates, and potential pointing information.

Experimental tests of sub-surface reflectors as an explanation for the ANITA anomalous events

The balloon-borne ANITA experiment is designed to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos via radio emissions produced by an in-ice shower. Although initially purposed for interactions within the Antarctic ice sheet, ANITA also demonstrated the ability to self-trigger on radio emissions from ultra-high energy charged cosmic rays interacting in the Earth's atmosphere. For showers produced above the Antarctic ice sheet, reflection of the down-coming radio signals at the Antarctic surface should result in a polarity inversion prior to subsequent observation at the $\sim$35-40 km altitude ANITA gondola. ANITA has published two anomalous instances of upcoming cosmic-rays with measured polarity opposite the remaining sample of $\sim$50 UHECR signals. The steep observed upwards incidence angles (25--30 degrees relative to the horizontal) require non-Standard Model physics if these events are due to in-ice neutrino interactions, as the Standard Model cross-section would otherwise prohibit neutrinos from penetrating the long required chord of Earth. Shoemaker et al. posit that glaciological effects may explain the steep observed anomalous events. We herein consider the scenarios offered by Shoemaker et al. and find them to be disfavored by extant ANITA and HiCal experimental data. We note that the recent report of four additional near-horizon anomalous ANITA-4 events, at $>3σ$ significance, are incompatible with their model, which requires significant signal transmission into the ice.

First decay-time-dependent analysis of $B^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{0}$ at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$) and direct $CP$-violating asymmetry ($A_{CP}$) of the charmless decay $B^{0} \to K^0 π^0$ at Belle II. A sample of $e^{+} e^{-}$ collisions, corresponding to $189.8 fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance is used for the first decay-time-dependent analysis of these decays within the experiment. We reconstruct about 135 signal candidates, and measure $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= [11.0 \pm 1.2 (stat) \pm 1.0 (syst)] \times 10^{-6}$ and $A_{CP} (B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= -0.41_{-0.32}^{+0.30} (stat) \pm 0.09 (syst)$.

Measurement of Branching Fraction and Longitudinal Polarization in $B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^-$ Decays at Belle II

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^-$ decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity and containing $198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\toρ^+ρ^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle $ϕ_2$.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the $B^0 \to K_S^0 π^0 γ$ decay using 190 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data

The signal yield is measured to be $121\pm 29\,\hbox{(stat.)}$, leading to the branching fraction ${\cal B}\left(B^0 \to K_S^0 π^0 γ\right) = \left(7.3 \pm 1.8\,\hbox{(stat.)} \pm 1.0\,\hbox{(syst.)} \right)\times 10^{-6}$, which agrees with the known value.

Precision timing for collider-experiment-based calorimetry

In this White Paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we discuss aspects of precision timing within electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter systems for high-energy physics collider experiments. Areas of applications include particle identification, event and object reconstruction, and pileup mitigation. Two different system options are considered, namely cell-level timing capabilities covering the full detector volume, and dedicated timing layers integrated in calorimeter systems. A selection of technologies for the different approaches is also discussed.

Snowmass 2021 White Paper on Upgrading SuperKEKB with a Polarized Electron Beam: Discovery Potential and Proposed Implementation

Upgrading the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider with polarized electron beams opens a new program of precision physics at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. This white paper describes the physics potential of this `Chiral Belle' program. It includes projections for precision measurements of $\sin^2θ_W$ that can be obtained from independent left-right asymmetry measurements of $e^+e^-$ transitions to pairs of electrons, muons, taus, charm and b-quarks. The $\sin^2θ_W$ precision obtainable at SuperKEKB will match that of the LEP/SLC world average, but at the centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Measurements of the couplings for muons, charm, and $b$-quarks will be substantially improved and the existing $3σ$ discrepancy between the SLC $A_{LR}$ and LEP $A_{FB}^b$ measurements will be addressed. Precision measurements of neutral current universality will be more than an order of magnitude more precise than currently available. As the energy scale is well away from the $Z^0$-pole, the precision measurements will have sensitivity to the presence of a parity-violating dark sector gauge boson, $Z_{\rm dark}$. The program also enables the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$ form factor of the $τ$ to be made at an unprecedented level of precision. A precision of $10^{-5}$ level is accessible with 40~ab$^{-1}$ and with more data it would start to approach the $10^{-6}$ level. This technique would provide the most precise information from the third generation about potential new physics explanations of the muon $g-2$ $4σ$ anomaly. Additional $τ$ and QCD physics programs enabled or enhanced with having polarized electron beams are also discussed in this White Paper. This paper includes a summary of the path forward in R&D and next steps required to implement this upgrade and access its exciting discovery potential.

Triboelectric Backgrounds to radio-based UHE Neutrino Exeperiments

The proposed IceCube-Gen2 (ICG2) seeks to instrument ~500 sq. km of Antarctic ice near the geographic South Pole with radio antennas, in order to observe the highest energy (E>1 EeV) neutrinos in the Universe. To this end, ICG2 will use the impulsive radio-frequency (RF) signal produced by neutrino interactions in polar ice caps. In such experiments, rare single event candidates must be unambiguously separated from background; to date, signal identification strategies primarily reject thermal noise and anthropogenic backgrounds. Here, we consider the possibility that fake neutrino signals may also be naturally generated via the 'triboelectric effect'. This broadly includes any process in which force applied at a boundary layer results in displacement of surface charge, generating a potential difference ΔV. Wind blowing over granular surfaces such as snow can induce such a ΔV, with subsequent discharge. Discharges over nanosecond-timescales can then lead to RF emissions at characteristic MHz-GHz frequencies. We find that such backgrounds are evident in the several neutrino experiments considered, and are generally characterized by: a) a threshold wind velocity which likely depends on the experimental signal trigger threshold and layout; for the experiments considered herein, this value is typically O(10 m/s), b) frequency spectra generally shifted to the low-end of the frequency regime to which current radio experiments are typically sensitive (100-200 MHz), c) for the strongest background signals, an apparent preference for discharges from above-surface structures, although the presence of more isotropic, lower amplitude triboelectric discharges cannot be excluded.

$τ$ lepton mass measurement at Belle II

The reconstruction of tau-pair production, $e^{+}e^{-} \to τ^{+}τ^{-}$, from the subsequent 3-prong ($τ^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ$) and 1-prong ($τ^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell} ν_τ$, $τ^{-} \to h^{-} ν_τ$ or $τ^{-} \to π^{-} π^0 ν_τ$) decays, is presented using 8.8 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data of Belle II at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = m_{Υ(4S)}$. The pseudomass technique developed by the ARGUS experiment is used to measure the $τ$-lepton mass $m_τ$ in the 3-prong $τ^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ $ decay, resulting in $m_τ = 1777.28 \pm 0.75~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.33 ~{\rm (sys.)}~{\rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2}$.

Analysis of a Tau Neutrino Origin for the Near-Horizon Air Shower Events Observed by the Fourth Flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA)

We study in detail the sensitivity of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) to possible $ν_τ$ point source fluxes detected via $τ$-lepton-induced air showers. This investigation is framed around the observation of four upward-going extensive air shower events very close to the horizon seen in ANITA-IV. We find that these four upgoing events are not observationally inconsistent with $τ$-induced EASs from Earth-skimming $ν_τ$, both in their spectral properties as well as in their observed locations on the sky. These four events, as well as the overall diffuse and point source exposure to Earth-skimming $ν_τ$, are also compared against published ultrahigh-energy neutrino limits from the Pierre Auger Observatory. While none of these four events occurred at sky locations simultaneously visible by Auger, the implied fluence necessary for ANITA to observe these events is in strong tension with limits set by Auger across a wide range of energies and is additionally in tension with ANITA's Askaryan in-ice neutrino channel above $10^{19}$ eV. We conclude by discussing some of the technical challenges with simulating and analyzing these near horizon events and the potential for future observatories to observe similar events.

Long-baseline horizontal radio-frequency transmission through polar ice

We report on analysis of englacial radio-frequency (RF) pulser data received over horizontal baselines of 1--5 km, based on broadcasts from two sets of transmitters deployed to depths of up to 1500 meters at the South Pole. First, we analyze data collected usingtwo RF bicone transmitters 1400 meters below the ice surface, and frozen into boreholes drilled for the IceCube experiment in 2011. Additionally, in Dec., 2018, a fat-dipole antenna, fed by one of three high-voltage (~1 kV), fast (~(1-5 ns)) signal generators was lowered into the 1700-m deep icehole drilled for the South Pole Ice Core Experiment (SPICE), approximately 3 km from the geographic South Pole. Signals from transmitters were recorded on the five englacial multi-receiver ARA stations, with receiver depths between 60--200 m. We confirm the long, >1 km RF electric field attenuation length, test our observed signal arrival timing distributions against models, and measure birefringent asymmetries at the 0.15% level.

Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array for probing cosmology and fundamental physics with gamma-ray propagation

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $γ$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $γ$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $γ$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $γ$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $γ$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We conclude on the synergies between CTA and other upcoming facilities that will foster the growth of $γ$-ray cosmology.

Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array to a dark matter signal from the Galactic centre

We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies. A calibration of the Belle II hadronic tag-side reconstruction algorithm with $B \rightarrow X\ell ν$ decays

Tag-side reconstruction is an important method for reconstructing $B$ meson decays with missing energy. The Belle II tag-side reconstruction algorithm, Full Event Interpretation, relies on a hierarchical reconstruction of $B$ meson decays with multivariate classification employed at each stage of reconstruction. Given the large numbers of classifiers employed and decay chains reconstructed, the performance of the algorithm on data and simulation differs significantly. Here, calibration factors are derived for hadronic tag-side $B$ decays by measuring a signal side decay, $B \rightarrow X\ell ν$, in $34.6$ fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data. For a very loose selection on the tag-side $B$ multivariate classifier, the calibration factors are $0.65 \pm 0.02$ and $0.83 \pm 0.03$ for tag-side $B^{+}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons, respectively.

Charmless $B$ decay reconstruction in 2019 Belle II data

We report on the reconstruction of various charmless $B$ decays from electron-positron collisions at the energy corresponding to the $Υ(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use simulation to devise optimized event selections and apply them to the full data set collected in 2019, corresponding to 8.7\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the difference between half of the collision energy and the $B$ candidate energy (in the $Υ(4S)$ frame) for events restricted to a signal-rich range in beam-energy-constrained mass to search for charmless signals. Signal yields of approximately 80, 15, 20, 30, 90, and 160 decays are reconstructed for the channels $B^0 \to K^+π^-$, $B^0 \to π^+π^-$, $B^+ \to K^0_S(\to π^+π^-)π^+$, $B^+ \to K^+π^0(\to γγ)$, $B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+$, and $B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+$, respectively. Yields and background contaminations are compatible with those expected from simulation and comparable with those obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Constraints on the Diffuse Flux of Ultra-High Energy Neutrinos from Four Years of Askaryan Radio Array Data in Two Stations

The Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) is an ultra-high energy (UHE, $>10^{17}$ eV) neutrino detector designed to observe neutrinos by searching for the radio waves emitted by the relativistic products of neutrino-nucleon interactions in Antarctic ice. In this paper, we present constraints on the diffuse flux of ultra-high energy neutrinos between $10^{16}-10^{21}$ eV resulting from a search for neutrinos in two complementary analyses, both analyzing four years of data (2013-2016) from the two deep stations (A2, A3) operating at that time. We place a 90 % CL upper limit on the diffuse all flavor neutrino flux at $10^{18}$ eV of $EF(E)=5.6\times10^{-16}$ $\textrm{cm}^{-2}$$\textrm{s}^{-1}$$\textrm{sr}^{-1}$. This analysis includes four times the exposure of the previous ARA result, and represents approximately 1/5 the exposure expected from operating ARA until the end of 2022.

First flavor tagging calibration using 2019 Belle II data

We report on the first calibration of the standard Belle II $B$-flavor tagger using the full data set collected at the $Υ(4{\rm S})$ resonance in 2019 with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider, corresponding to 8.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The calibration is performed by reconstructing various hadronic charmed $B$-meson decays with flavor-specific final states. We use simulation to optimize our event selection criteria and to train the flavor tagging algorithm. We determine the tagging efficiency and the fraction of wrongly identified tag-side $B$~candidates from a measurement of the time-integrated $B^0-\overline{B}^0$ mixing probability. The total effective efficiency is measured to be $\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(33.8 \pm 3.6(\text{stat}) \pm 1.6(\text{sys})\big)\%$, which is in good agreement with the predictions from simulation and comparable with the best one obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a basis for future calibrations.

Measurement of Hadronic Mass Moments $\langle M_X^n \rangle $ in $B \rightarrow X_c \ell ν$ Decays at Belle II

We present measurements of the first six hadronic mass moments in semileptonic $B \rightarrow X_c \ell ν$ decays. The hadronic mass moments, together with other observables of inclusive $B$ decays, can be used to determine the CKM matrix element $|{V_{cb}}|$ and mass of the $b$-quark $m_b$ in the context of Heavy Quark Expansions of QCD. The Belle~II data recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance in 2019 and 2020 (March-July), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $34.6\;\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, is used for this measurement. The decay $Υ(4S) \rightarrow B \overline{B}$ is reconstructed by applying the hadronic tagging algorithm provided by the Full Event Interpretation to fully reconstruct one $B$ meson. The second $B$ meson is reconstructed inclusively by selecting a high-momentum lepton. The $X_c$ system is identified by the remaining reconstructed tracks and clusters in the electromagnetic calorimeter. We report preliminary results for the hadronic mass moments $\langle M_X^n \rangle $ with $n=1,\dots,6$, measured as a function of a lower cut on the lepton momentum in the signal $B$ rest frame.

Measurement of the $B^0$ lifetime using fully reconstructed hadronic decays in the 2019 Belle II dataset

This document presents the measurement of $B^0$ meson lifetimes using the 2019 Belle II dataset that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $8.7 \pm 0.2$ fb$^{-1}$. Each candidate is fully reconstructed with hadronic decay final states on the signal side, while the rest-of-event technique allows to infer the decay vertex position on the other (tag) side. $B^0$ lifetime is extracted from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the difference between the signal side $B^0$ candidate and the tag side decay times. The measured lifetime is $τ_{B^0} = 1.48 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06 $ ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the branching fraction ${\cal B}(\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell)$ with early Belle II data

We measure the branching fractions for the decays $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} e^{-} \barν_e$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$ using $8.70 \pm 0.09~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Candidate signal decays are reconstructed with the subsequent decays $D^{*+}\to D^0 π^+$ and $D^0\to K^-π^+$. We obtain the results ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} e^{-} \barν_e)$ = $(4.55\pm0.14(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.35 (\mathrm{syst})) \%$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} μ^{-} \barν_μ)$ = $(4.84\pm 0.13(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.37(\mathrm{syst})) \%$, in agreement with the world averages. Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless $B$ decays reconstructed in 2019--2020 Belle~II data

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~($\mathcal{A}$) in charmless $B$ decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $34.6$\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $ΔE$ distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in $M_{\rm bc}$, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Observation of a cross-section enhancement near mass threshold in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$

The process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ is studied using data samples at $\sqrt{s}=2.2324$, 2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section is measured at $\sqrt{s}$=2.2324 GeV, which is 1.0 MeV above the $Λ\barΛ$ mass threshold, to be $305\pm45^{+66}_{-36}$ pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The substantial cross section near threshold is significantly larger than that expected from theory, which predicts the cross section to vanish at threshold. The Born cross sections at $\sqrt{s}$=2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV are measured and found to be consistent with previous experimental results, but with improved precision. Finally, the corresponding effective electromagnetic form factors of $Λ$ are deduced.

Rediscovery of $B \to ϕK^{(*)}$ decays and measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$ in $B \to ϕK^{*}$ decays using the Summer 2020 Belle II dataset

We utilize a sample of 34.6 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider, to search for the $B^+ \to ϕK^+$, $B^+ \to ϕK^{*+}$, $B^0 \to ϕK^0_S$, and $B^0 \to ϕK^{*0}$ decays. Charmless hadronic $B$ decays represent an important part of the Belle II physics program, and are an ideal benchmark to test the detector capabilities in terms of tracking efficiency, charged particle identification, vertexing, and advanced analysis techniques. Each channel is observed with a significance that exceeds 5 standard deviations, and we obtain measurements of their branching ratios that are in good agreement with the world averages. For the $B \to ϕK^*$ modes, we also perform a measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$.

Search for an invisibly decaying $Z^{\prime}$ boson at Belle II in $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp})$ plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the $Z^{\prime}$. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a $Z^{\prime}$ in the process $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime}$ and of a lepton-flavor-violating $Z^{\prime}$ in $e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}$. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an $L_μ-L_τ$ theory, into upper limits on the $Z^{\prime}$ coupling constant at the level of $5 \times 10^{-2}$ -- $1$ $M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6$ GeV/$c^2$.

Studies of the semileptonic $\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $B^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ decay processes with 34.6 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data

We report measurements of the $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ and $B^- \to D^{0} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ processes using 34.6 fb$^{-1}$ of collision events recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. For the $B^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ channel, we present first studies that isolate this decay from other semileptonic processes and backgrounds. We report a measurement of the $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ branching fraction and obtain ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l) = \left(4.60 \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.17_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.45_{π_s}\right) \%$, in agreement with the world average. Here, the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and related to slow pion reconstruction, respectively. The systematic uncertainties are limited by the statistics of auxiliary measurements and will improve in the future. We also report differential branching fractions in five bins of the hadronic recoil parameter $w$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$, unfolded to account for resolution and efficiency effects.

Unusual Near-horizon Cosmic-ray-like Events Observed by ANITA-IV

ANITA's fourth long-duration balloon flight in late 2016 detected 29 cosmic-ray (CR)-like events on a background of $0.37^{+0.27}_{-0.17}$ anthropogenic events. CRs are mainly seen in reflection off the Antarctic ice sheets, creating a characteristic phase-inverted waveform polarity. However, four of the below-horizon CR-like events show anomalous non-inverted polarity, a $p = 5.3 \times 10^{-4}$ chance if due to background. All anomalous events are from locations near the horizon; ANITA-IV observed no steeply-upcoming anomalous events similar to the two such events seen in prior flights.

Measurement of the integrated luminosity of the Phase 2 data of the Belle II experiment

From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the $Υ(4S)$ resonance was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. This is the first data sample of the Belle~II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be ($496.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 3.0$)~pb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This work provides a basis for future luminosity measurements at Belle~II.

Characteristics of Four Upward-pointing Cosmic-ray-like Events Observed with ANITA

We report on four radio-detected cosmic-ray (CR) or CR-like events observed with the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA-sponsored long-duration balloon payload. Two of the four were previously identified as stratospheric CR air showers during the ANITA-I flight. A third stratospheric CR was detected during the ANITA-II flight. Here we report on characteristics these three unusual CR events, which develop nearly horizontally, 20-30~km above the surface of the Earth. In addition, we report on a fourth steeply upward-pointing ANITA-I CR-like radio event which has characteristics consistent with a primary that emerged from the surface of the ice. This suggests a possible $τ$-lepton decay as the origin of this event, but such an interpretation would require significant suppression of the Standard Model $τ$-neutrino cross section.

Energy and Flux Measurements of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays Observed During the First ANITA Flight

The first flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment recorded 16 radio signals that were emitted by cosmic-ray induced air showers. For 14 of these events, this radiation was reflected from the ice. The dominant contribution to the radiation from the deflection of positrons and electrons in the geomagnetic field, which is beamed in the direction of motion of the air shower. This radiation is reflected from the ice and subsequently detected by the ANITA experiment at a flight altitude of 36km. In this paper, we estimate the energy of the 14 individual events and find that the mean energy of the cosmic-ray sample is 2.9 EeV. By simulating the ANITA flight, we calculate its exposure for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We estimate for the first time the cosmic-ray flux derived only from radio observations. In addition, we find that the Monte Carlo simulation of the ANITA data set is in agreement with the total number of observed events and with the properties of those events.

Improved measurement of the absolute branching fraction of $D^{+}\rightarrow \bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ$

By analyzing 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at $\sqrt s=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0μ^{+}ν_μ)=(8.72 \pm 0.07_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.18_{\rm sys.})\%$, which is consistent with previous measurements within uncertainties but with significantly improved precision. Combining the Particle Data Group values of ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-μ^+ν_μ)$, ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e})$, and the lifetimes of the $D^0$ and $D^+$ mesons with the value of ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ)$ measured in this work, we determine the following ratios of partial widths: $Γ(D^0\to K^-μ^+ν_μ)/Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0μ^{+}ν_μ)=0.963\pm0.044$ and $Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ)/Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e})=0.988\pm0.033$.

Invited Article: miniTimeCube

We present the development of the miniTimeCube (mTC), a novel compact neutrino detector. The mTC is a multipurpose detector, aiming to detect not only neutrinos but also fast/thermal neutrons. Potential applications include the counterproliferation of nuclear materials and the investigation of antineutrino short-baseline effects. The mTC is a plastic 0.2% $^{10}$B - doped scintillator (13 cm)$^3$ cube surrounded by 24 Micro-Channel Plate (MCP) photon detectors, each with an $8\times8$ anode totaling 1536 individual channels/pixels viewing the scintillator. It uses custom-made electronics modules which mount on top of the MCPs, making our detector compact and able to both distinguish different types of events and reject noise in real time. The detector is currently deployed and being tested at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) nuclear reactor (20 MW$_\mathrm{th}$) in Gaithersburg, MD. A shield for further tests is being constructed, and calibration and upgrades are ongoing. The mTC's improved spatiotemporal resolution will allow for determination of incident particle directions beyond previous capabilities.

Measurement of azimuthal asymmetries in inclusive charged dipion production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations at $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.65 GeV

We present a measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries of two charged pions in the inclusive process $e^+e^-\rightarrow ππX$ based on a data set of 62 $\rm{pb}^{-1}$ at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=3.65$ GeV collected with the BESIII detector. These asymmetries can be attributed to the Collins fragmentation function. We observe a nonzero asymmetry, which increases with increasing pion momentum. As our energy scale is close to that of the existing semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experimental data, the measured asymmetries are important inputs for the global analysis of extracting the quark transversity distribution inside the nucleon and are valuable to explore the energy evolution of the spin-dependent fragmentation function.

Measurement of the $D_s^+ \to \ell^+ν_\ell$ branching fractions and the decay constant $f_{D_s^+}$

Using 482~pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 4.009$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fractions of the decays $D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ$ and $D_s^+\toτ^+ν_τ$. By constraining the ratio of decay rates of $D_s^+$ to $τ^+ν_τ$ and to $μ^+ν_μ$ to the Standard Model prediction, the branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+ \to μ^+ν_μ) = (0.495 \pm 0.067 \pm 0.026)\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+ \to τ^+ν_τ) = (4.83 \pm 0.65 \pm 0.26)\%$. Using these branching fractions, we obtain a value for the decay constant $f_{D_s^+}$ of $(241.0 \pm 16.3 \pm 6.5)~\text{MeV}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} >$ 4.4 GeV, the processes $e^+e^- \rightarrow ωχ_{c1,2}$ are observed for the first time. With an integrated luminosity of $1074 pb^{-1}$ near $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.42 GeV, a significant $ωχ_{c2}$ signal is found, and the cross section is measured to be $(20.9 \pm 3.2 \pm 2.5)\pb$. With $567 pb^{-1}$ near $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.6 GeV, a clear $ωχ_{c1}$ signal is seen, and the cross section is measured to be $(9.5 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.3) \pb$, while evidence is found for an $ωχ_{c2}$ signal. The first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Due to low luminosity or low cross section at other energies, no significant signals are observed. In the $ωχ_{c2}$ cross section, an enhancement is seen around $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.42 GeV. Fitting the cross section with a coherent sum of the $ψ(4415)$ Breit-Wigner function and a phase space term, the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(ψ(4415)\toωχ_{c2})$ is obtained to be of the order of $10^{-3}$.

Observation of an anomalous line shape of the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ mass spectrum near the $p\bar{p}$ mass threshold in $J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$

Using $1.09\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII experiment in 2012, we study the $J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ process and observe a significant abrupt change in the slope of the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass distribution at the proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) mass threshold. We use two models to characterize the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ line shape around $1.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}$: one which explicitly incorporates the opening of a decay threshold in the mass spectrum (Flatté formula), and another which is the coherent sum of two resonant amplitudes. Both fits show almost equally good agreement with data, and suggest the existence of either a broad state around $1.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}$ with strong couplings to $p\bar{p}$ final states or a narrow state just below the $p\bar{p}$ mass threshold. Although we cannot distinguish between the fits, either one supports the existence of a $p\bar{p}$ molecule-like state or bound state with greater than $7σ$ significance.

Results of the partial wave analysis show that the structures are predominantly $0^{-+}$ states. The existence of the $η(2225)$ is confirmed, and its resonance parameters are measured. Two additional pseudoscalar states, the $η(2100)$ with a mass of $2050_{-24}^{+30}{}_{-26}^{+75}$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and a width of $250_{-30}^{+36}{}_{-164}^{+181}$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and the $X(2500)$ with a mass of $2470_{-19}^{+15}{}_{-23}^{+101}$~MeV/$c^{2}$ and a width of $230_{-35}^{+64}{}_{-33}^{+56}$~MeV/$c^{2}$, are observed. In addition to these three pseudoscalar states, the scalar state $f_0(2100)$, and three tensor states, the $f_2(2010)$, $f_2(2300)$ and $f_2(2340)$, are observed in the process $J/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ$. Performance of two Askaryan Radio Array stations and first results in the search for ultra-high energy neutrinos

Ultra-high energy neutrinos are interesting messenger particles since, if detected, they can transmit exclusive information about ultra-high energy processes in the Universe. These particles, with energies above $10^{16}\mathrm{eV}$, interact very rarely. Therefore, detectors that instrument several gigatons of matter are needed to discover them. The ARA detector is currently being constructed at South Pole. It is designed to use the Askaryan effect, the emission of radio waves from neutrino-induced cascades in the South Pole ice, to detect neutrino interactions at very high energies. With antennas distributed among 37 widely-separated stations in the ice, such interactions can be observed in a volume of several hundred cubic kilometers. Currently 3 deep ARA stations are deployed in the ice of which two have been taking data since the beginning of the year 2013. In this publication, the ARA detector "as-built" and calibrations are described. Furthermore, the data reduction methods used to distinguish the rare radio signals from overwhelming backgrounds of thermal and anthropogenic origin are presented. Using data from only two stations over a short exposure time of 10 months, a neutrino flux limit of $3 \cdot 10^{-6} \mathrm{GeV} / (\mathrm{cm^2 \ s \ sr})$ is calculated for a particle energy of 10^{18}eV, which offers promise for the full ARA detector.

Using a nearly background-free sample of 18262 events, we measure the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e) = (3.71 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.08)\%$. An amplitude analysis of the $π^{0}π^{0}$ system produced in radiative $J/ψ$ decays

An amplitude analysis of the $π^{0}π^{0}$ system produced in radiative $J/ψ$ decays is presented. In particular, a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the $π^{0}π^{0}$ system is determined as a function of $M_{π^{0}π^{0}}$ from an analysis of the $(1.311\pm0.011)\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ decays collected by the BESIII detector. The goal of this analysis is to provide a description of the scalar and tensor components of the $π^0π^0$ system while making minimal assumptions about the properties or number of poles in the amplitude. Such a model-independent description allows one to integrate these results with other related results from complementary reactions in the development of phenomenological models, which can then be used to directly fit experimental data to obtain parameters of interest. The branching fraction of $J/ψ\to γπ^{0}π^{0}$ is determined to be $(1.15\pm0.05)\times10^{-3}$, where the uncertainty is systematic only and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

By performing a simultaneous fit, the statistical significance of $Zc(3885)^{\mp}$ signal is determined to be greater than 10$σ$, and its pole mass and width are measured to be $M_{\rm{pole}}$=(3881.7$\pm$1.6(stat.)$\pm$1.6(syst.))~MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ_{\rm{pole}}$=(26.6$\pm$2.0(stat.)$\pm$2.1(syst.))~MeV, respectively. The Born cross section times the $(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp}$ branching fraction ($σ(e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}Z_{c}(3885)^{\mp}) \times Br(Z_{c}(3885)^{\mp}\to(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp})$) is measured to be $(141.6\pm7.9(\text{stat.})\pm12.3(\text{syst.}))~\text{pb}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.23$~GeV and $(108.4\pm6.9(\text{stat.})\pm8.8(\text{syst.}))~\text{pb}$ at $\sqrt{s}=4.26$~GeV. We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $ψ(3770)\toγχ_{c1}$ and search for the transition $ψ(3770)\rightarrow γχ_{c2}$ based on 2.92~fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ data accumulated at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$~GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The measured branching fraction of $ψ(3770) \rightarrow γχ_{c1}$ is $\mathcal B(ψ(3770) \rightarrow γχ_{c1})=(2.48 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.23) \times 10^{-3}$, which is the most precise measurement to date. The upper limit on the branching fraction of $ψ(3770)\rightarrow γχ_{c2}$ at a $90\%$ confidence level is $\mathcal B(ψ(3770) \rightarrow γχ_{c2})<0.64 \times 10^{-3}$. The corresponding partial widths are $Γ(ψ(3770) \to γχ_{c1}) =(67.5\pm 4.1\pm 6.7)$~keV and $Γ(ψ(3770) \to γχ_{c2}) < 17.4$~keV.

Measurement of $y_{CP}$ in $D^0-\overline{D}^0$ oscillation using quantum correlations in $e^+e^-\to D^0\overline{D}^0$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.773\,GeV

We report a measurement of the parameter $y_{CP}$ in $\ensuremath{D^0}\xspace-\ensuremath{\overline{D}^{0}}\xspace$ oscillations performed by taking advantage of quantum coherence between pairs of $\ensuremath{D^0}\xspace \ensuremath{\overline{D}^{0}}\xspace$ mesons produced in $e^+e^-$ annihilations near threshold. In this work, doubly-tagged $\ensuremath{D^0}\xspace \ensuremath{\overline{D}^{0}}\xspace$ events, where one $D$ decays to a $CP$ eigenstate and the other $D$ decays in a semileptonic mode, are reconstructed using a data sample of 2.92\,fb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 3.773\,GeV. We obtain $y_{CP} = (-2.0\pm1.3\pm0.7)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This result is compatible with the current world average.

Measurement of the $\mathrm e^+\mathrm e^-\rightarrow\mathrmπ^+\mathrmπ^-$ Cross Section between 600 and 900 MeV Using Initial State Radiation

We extract the $e^+e^-\rightarrow π^+π^-$ cross section in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV, exploiting the method of initial state radiation. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider is used. The cross section is measured with a systematic uncertainty of 0.9%. We extract the pion form factor $|F_π|^2$ as well as the contribution of the measured cross section to the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to $(g-2)_μ$. We find this value to be $a_μ^{ππ,\rm LO}(600-900\;\rm MeV) = (368.2 \pm 2.5_{\rm stat} \pm 3.3_{\rm sys})\cdot 10^{-10}$.

Measurement of the $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ$ cross section and search for $e^{+}e^{-} \to π^{0} J/ψ$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.810 and 4.600~GeV

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies from 3.810 to 4.600 GeV, we perform a study of $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ$ and $π^0 J/ψ$. Statistically significant signals of $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ$ are observed at $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.190, 4.210, 4.220, 4.230, 4.245, 4.260, 4.360 and 4.420 GeV, while no signals of $e^{+}e^{-} \to π^{0} J/ψ$ are observed. The measured energy-dependent Born cross section for $e^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ$ shows an enhancement around 4.2~GeV. The measurement is compatible with an earlier measurement by Belle, but with a significantly improved precision.

Measurement of the branching fractions of $D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'X$ and $D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'ρ^{+}$ in $e^+e^-\to D^+_{s}D^-_{s}$

We study $D_{s}^{+}$ decays to final states involving the $η'$ with a 482$\,$pb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.009$\,$GeV with the \mbox{BESIII} detector at the BEPCII collider. We measure the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(D^+_{s}\rightarrow η'X)$ = (8.8$\pm$1.8$\pm$0.5)$\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'ρ^{+})$ = ($5.8\pm1.4\pm0.4$)$\%$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, we estimate an upper limit on the non-resonant branching ratio $\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'π^+π^0)<5.1\%$ at the 90$\%$ confidence level. Our results are consistent with CLEO's recent measurements and help to resolve the disagreement between the theoretical prediction and CLEO's previous measurement of $\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow η'ρ^{+})$.

Using 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ of electron-positron annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}= 3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we present an improved measurement of the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to ωe^+ ν_{e}) = (1.63\pm0.11\pm0.08)\times 10^{-3}$. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We also search for the decay $D^+ \to ϕe^+ ν_{e}$. Measurement of the Matrix Elements for the Decays $η\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}π^0$ and $η/η^{\prime}\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0$

Based on a sample of $1.31 \times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, Dalitz plot analyses of selected 79,625 $η\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-}π^0$ events, 33,908 $η\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0$ events and 1,888 $η^{\prime}\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0$ events are performed. The measured matrix elements of $η\rightarrowπ^+π^-π^0$ are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements. The Dalitz plot slope parameters of $η\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0$ and $η^{\prime}\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0$ are determined to be $-0.055 \pm 0.014 \pm 0.004$ and $-0.640 \pm 0.046 \pm 0.047$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Measurement of the proton form factor by studying $e^{+} e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p}$

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the Born cross section of $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p}$ at 12 center-of-mass energies from 2232.4 to 3671.0 MeV. The corresponding effective electromagnetic form factor of the proton is deduced under the assumption that the electric and magnetic form factors are equal $(|G_{E}|= |G_{M}|)$. In addition, the ratio of electric to magnetic form factors, $|G_{E}/G_{M}|$, and $|G_{M}|$ are extracted by fitting the polar angle distribution of the proton for the data samples with larger statistics, namely at $\sqrt{s}=$ 2232.4 and 2400.0 MeV and a combined sample at $\sqrt{s}$ = 3050.0, 3060.0 and 3080.0 MeV, respectively. The measured cross sections are in agreement with recent results from BaBar, improving the overall uncertainty by about 30\%. The $|G_{E}/G_{M}|$ ratios are close to unity and consistent with BaBar results in the same $q^{2}$ region, which indicates the data are consistent with the assumption that $|G_{E}|=|G_{M}|$ within uncertainties.

Observation of a Neutral Structure near the $D\bar{D}^{*}$ Mass Threshold in $e^{+}e^{-}\to (D \bar{D}^*)^0π^0$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.226 and 4.257 GeV

A neutral structure in the $D\bar{D}^{*}$ system around the $D\bar{D}^{*}$ mass threshold is observed with a statistical significance greater than 10$σ$ in the processes $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow D^{+}D^{*-}π^{0}+c.c.$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow D^{0}\bar{D}^{*0}π^{0}+c.c.$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 4.226 and 4.257 GeV in the BESIII experiment. The structure is denoted as $Z_{c}(3885)^{0}$. Assuming the presence of a resonance, its pole mass and width are determined to be ($3885.7^{+4.3}_{-5.7}$(stat)$\pm 8.4$(syst)) MeV/$c^{2}$ and ($35^{+11}_{-12}$(stat)$ \pm 15$(syst)) MeV, respectively. The Born cross sections are measured to be $σ(e^{+}e^{-}\to Z_{c}(3885)^{0}π^{0}, Z_{c}(3885)^{0} \to D\bar{D}^{*})=(77 \pm 13$(stat)$\pm 17$(syst)) pb at 4.226 GeV and ($47 \pm 9$(stat)$ \pm 10$(syst)) pb at 4.257 GeV. We report the first observation of the Dalitz decay $η' \to γe^+e^-$, based on a data sample of 1.31 billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The $η'$ mesons are produced via the $J/ψ\to γη'$ decay process. The ratio $Γ(η' \to γe^+ e^-)/Γ(η'\toγγ)$ is measured to be $(2.13\pm0.09(\text{stat.})\pm0.07(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-2}$. This corresponds to a branching fraction ${\cal B}(η' \to γe^+e^-)= (4.69 \pm0.20(\text{stat.})\pm0.23(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-4}$. The transition form factor is extracted and different expressions are compared to the measured dependence on the $e^+e^-$ invariant mass. Observation of the electromagnetic doubly OZI-suppressed decay $J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}$

Using a sample of $1.31$ billion $J/ψ$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the observation of the decay $J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}$, which is the first evidence for a doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppressed electromagnetic $J/ψ$ decay. A clear structure is observed in the $K^{+} K^{-}$ mass spectrum around 1.02 GeV/$c^2$, which can be attributed to interference between $J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ decays. Due to this interference, two possible solutions are found. The corresponding measured values of the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0}$ are $[2.94 \pm 0.16\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.16\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-6}$ and $[1.24 \pm 0.33\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.30\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-7}$.

Precision measurement of the $D^{*0}$ decay branching fractions

The ratio of the two branching fractions is $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0π^0)/\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0γ) =1.90\pm 0.07\pm 0.05$, which is independent of the assumption made above. Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at 9 center-of-mass energies from 4.21 to 4.42 GeV, we search for the production of $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{cJ}$ ($J$=0, 1, 2). The process $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c0}$ is observed for the first time, and the Born cross sections at $\sqrt{s}$=4.23 and 4.26 GeV are measured to be $(55.4\pm 6.0\pm 5.9)$ and $(23.7\pm 5.3\pm 3.5)$ pb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The $ωχ_{c0}$ signals at the other 7 energies and $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{c1}$ and $ωχ_{c2}$ signals are not significant, and the upper limits on the cross sections are determined. By examining the $ωχ_{c0}$ cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy, we find that it is inconsistent with the line shape of the $Y(4260)$ observed in $e^+ e^-\toπ^+π^-J/ψ$. Assuming the $ωχ_{c0}$ signals come from a single resonance, we extract mass and width of the resonance to be $(4230\pm8\pm6)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(38\pm12\pm2)$ MeV, respectively, and the statistical significance is more than $9σ$.

Study of $χ_{cJ}$ decaying into $ϕ$ $K^*(892)$ $\bar{K}$

Using a data sample of 106 million $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring, we study for the first time the decay $χ_{cJ}\toϕK^{0}_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp}$ and $χ_{cJ}\toϕK^{+} K^{-}π^{0}$ in the E1 radiative transition $ψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}$. The decays are dominated by the three-body decay $χ_{cJ}\to ϕK^*(892)\bar{K}$. We measure branching fractions for this reaction via the neutral and charged $K^*(892)$ and find them consistent with each other within the expectation of isospin symmetry. In the $K\bar{K}π$ invariant mass distribution a structure near the $K^*(892)\bar{K}$ mass threshold is observed, and the corresponding mass and width are measured to be $1412\pm4(\mathrm{stat.})\pm8(\mathrm{sys.}) \mathrm{MeV}/c^2$ and $Γ$ = $84\pm12(\mathrm{stat.})\pm40(\mathrm{sys.}) \mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. The observed state favors an assignment to the $h_1(1380)$, considering its possible $J^{PC}$ and comparing its mass, width and decay mode to those reported in the Particle Data Group.

Study of $ψ(3686)\toπ^0 h_c, h_c\toγη_c$ via $η_c$ exclusive decays

The process $ψ(3686) \to π^0 h_c, h_c \to γη_c$ has been studied with a data sample of $106 \pm 4$ million $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The mass and width of the $P$-wave charmonium spin-singlet state $h_c(^1P_1)$ are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the $π^0$ recoil mass for 16 exclusive $η_c$ decay modes. The results, $M(\hc) = 3525.31 \pm 0.11 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.14 {\rm (syst.)}$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ(\hc) = 0.70 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.22$\,MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive $η_c$ decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the $η_c$ line-shape parameters in the $E1$ transition $h_c\toγη_c$ are made by selecting candidates in the $h_c$ signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 $η_c$ decay channels. The resulting $η_c$ mass and width values are $M(η_c) = 2984.49 \pm 1.16 \pm 0.52$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ(η_c) = 36.4 \pm 3.2 \pm 1.7$\,MeV.

Study of decay dynamics and $CP$ asymmetry in $D^+ \to K^0_L e^+ ν_e$ decay

Using 2.92~fb$^{-1}$ of electron-positron annihilation data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 3.773$~GeV with the BESIII detector, we obtain the first measurements of the absolute branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to K^0_L e^+ ν_e) = (4.481 \pm 0.027(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.103(\mathrm{sys.}))\%$ and the $CP$ asymmetry $A_{CP}^{D^+ \to K^0_L e^+ ν_e} = (-0.59 \pm 0.60(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 1.48(\mathrm{sys.}))\%$. From the $D^+ \to K^0_L e^+ ν_e$ differential decay rate distribution, the product of the hadronic form factor and the magnitude of the CKM matrix element, $f_{+}^{K}(0)|V_{cs}|$, is determined to be $0.728 \pm 0.006(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.011(\mathrm{sys.})$. Using $|V_{cs}|$ from the SM constrained fit with the measured $f_{+}^{K}(0)|V_{cs}|$, $f_{+}^{K}(0) = 0.748 \pm 0.007(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.012(\mathrm{sys.})$ is obtained, and utilizing the unquenched LQCD calculation for $f_{+}^{K}(0)$, $|V_{cs}| = 0.975 \pm 0.008(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.015(\mathrm{sys.}) \pm 0.025(\mathrm{LQCD})$.

Study of Dynamics of $D^0 \to K^- e^+ ν_{e}$ and $D^0\toπ^- e^+ ν_{e}$ Decays

In an analysis of a 2.92~fb$^{-1}$ data sample taken at 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we measure the absolute decay branching fractions to be $\mathcal B(D^0 \to K^-e^+ν_e)=(3.505\pm 0.014 \pm 0.033)\%$ and $\mathcal B(D^0 \to π^-e^+ν_e)=(0.295\pm 0.004\pm 0.003)\%$. From a study of the differential decay rates we obtain the products of hadronic form factor and the magnitude of the CKM matrix element $f_{+}^K(0)|V_{cs}|=0.7172\pm0.0025\pm 0.0035$ and $f_{+}^π(0)|V_{cd}|=0.1435\pm0.0018\pm 0.0009$. Combining these products with the values of $|V_{cs(d)}|$ from the SM constraint fit, we extract the hadronic form factors $f^K_+(0) = 0.7368\pm0.0026\pm 0.0036$ and $f^π_+(0) = 0.6372\pm0.0080\pm 0.0044$, and their ratio $f_+^π(0)/f_+^{K}(0)=0.8649\pm 0.0112\pm 0.0073$. These form factors and their ratio are used to test unquenched Lattice QCD calculations of the form factors and a light cone sum rule (LCSR) calculation of their ratio. The measured value of $f_+^{K(π)}(0) |V_{cs(d)}|$ and the lattice QCD value for $f^{K(π)}_+(0)$ are used to extract values of the CKM matrix elements of $|V_{cs}|=0.9601 \pm 0.0033 \pm 0.0047 \pm 0.0239$ and $|V_{cd}|=0.2155 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0014 \pm 0.0094$, where the third errors are due to the uncertainties in lattice QCD calculations of the form factors. Using the LCSR value for $f_+^π(0)/f_+^K(0)$, we determine the ratio $|V_{cd}|/|V_{cs}|=0.238\pm 0.004\pm 0.002\pm 0.011$, where the third error is from the uncertainty in the LCSR normalization. In addition, we measure form factor parameters for three different theoretical models that describe the weak hadronic charged currents for these two semileptonic decays. All of these measurements are the most precise to date.

Amplitude Analysis of the $D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0$ Dalitz Plot

We perform an analysis of the $D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0$ Dalitz plot using a data set of 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $ψ(3770)$ mass accumulated by the BESIII Experiment, in which 166694 candidate events are selected with a background of 15.1%. The Dalitz plot is found to be well-represented by a combination of six quasi-two-body decay channels ($K^0_Sρ^+$, $K^0_Sρ(1450)^+$, $\overline{K}^{*0}π^+$, $\overline{K}_0(1430)^0π^+$, $\overline{K}(1680)^0π^+$, $\overlineκ^0π^+$) plus a small non-resonant component. Using the fit fractions from this analysis, partial branching ratios are updated with higher precision than previous measurements.

Antarctic Radio Frequency Albedo and Implications for Cosmic Ray Reconstruction

From an elevation of ~38 km, the balloon-borne ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) is designed to detect the up-coming radio frequency (RF) signal resulting from a sub-surface neutrino-nucleon collision. Although no neutrinos have been discovered thus far, ANITA is nevertheless the only experiment to self-trigger on radio frequency emissions from cosmic-ray induced atmospheric air showers. In the majority of those cases, down-coming RF signals are observed via their reflection from the Antarctic ice sheet and back up to the ANITA interferometer. Estimating the energy scale of the incident cosmic rays therefore requires an estimate of the fractional power reflected at the air-ice interface. Similarly, inferring the energy of neutrinos interacting in-ice from observations of the upwards-directed signal refracting out to ANITA also requires consideration of signal coherence across the interface. By comparing the direct Solar RF signal intensity measured with ANITA to the surface-reflected Solar signal intensity, as a function of incident elevation angle relative to the surface Θ, we estimate the power reflection coefficients R(Θ). We find general consistency between our average measurements and the values of R(Θ) expected from the Fresnel equations, separately for horizontal- vs. vertical-polarizations.

Measurement of the $D\to K^-π^+$ strong phase difference in $ψ(3770)\to D^0\overline{D}{}^0$

We study $D^0\overline{D}{}^0$ pairs produced in $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=3.773$ GeV using a data sample of 2.92 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector. We measure the asymmetry $\mathcal{A}^{CP}_{Kπ}$ of the branching fractions of $D \to K^-π^+$ in $CP$-odd and $CP$-even eigenstates to be $(12.7\pm1.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-2}$. $\mathcal{A}^{CP}_{Kπ}$ can be used to extract the strong phase difference $δ_{Kπ}$ between the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed process $\overline{D}{}^{0}\to K^-π^+$ and the Cabibbo-favored process $D^0\to K^- π^+$. Using world-average values of external parameters, we obtain $\cosδ_{Kπ} = 1.02\pm0.11\pm0.06\pm0.01$. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third uncertainty arises from the external parameters. This is the most precise measurement of $δ_{Kπ}$ to date.

Measurement of the branching fraction for $ψ(3686)\toωK^+ K^-$

With $1.06\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of $ψ(3686) \to ωK^+ K^-$ is measured to be $(1.54 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-4}$. This is the most precise result to date, due to the largest $ψ(3686)$ sample, improved signal reconstruction efficiency, good simulation of the detector performance, and a more accurate knowledge of the continuum contribution. Using the branching fraction of $J/ψ\to ωK^+ K^-$, the ratio $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3868) \to K^+K^-) / \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to K^+K^-)$ is determined to be $(18.4 \pm 3.7)\,\%$. This constitutes a significantly improved test of the $12\,\%$ rule, with the uncertainty now dominated by the $J/ψ$ branching fraction.

Observation of a charged charmoniumlike structure in e+e- to pi+pi-J/psi at \sqrt{s}=4.26 GeV

We study the process e+e- to pi+pi-J/psi at a center-of-mass energy of 4.260 GeV using a 525 pb^{-1} data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross section is measured to be (62.9\pm 1.9\pm 3.7) pb, consistent with the production of the Y(4260). We observe a structure at around 3.9 GeV/c^2 in the π^\pm J/psi mass spectrum, which we refer to as the Z_c(3900). If interpreted as a new particle, it is unusual in that it carries an electric charge and couples to charmonium. A fit to the π^\pm J/psi invariant mass spectrum, neglecting interference, results in a mass of (3899.0\pm 3.6\pm 4.9) MeV/c^2 and a width of (46\pm 10\pm 20) MeV. Its production ratio is measured to be R=\frac{σ(e+e- to π^\pm Z_c(3900)^\mp to pi+pi-J/psi))} {σ(e+e- to pi+pi-J/psi)}=(21.5\pm 3.3\pm 7.5)%. In all measurements the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

Observation of a charged charmoniumlike structure Z_c(4020) and search for the Z_c(3900) in e+e- to pi+pi-h_c

We study e+e- --> pi+pi-h_c at center-of-mass energies from 3.90 GeV to 4.42 GeV using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross sections are measured at 13 energies, and are found to be of the same order of magnitude as those of e+e- --> pi+pi-J/psi but with a different line shape. In the π^\pm h_c mass spectrum, a distinct structure, referred to as Z_c(4020), is observed at 4.02 GeV/c^2. The Z_c(4020) carries an electric charge and couples to charmonium. A fit to the π^\pm h_c invariant mass spectrum, neglecting possible interferences, results in a mass of (4022.9\pm 0.8\pm 2.7) MeV/c^2 and a width of (7.9\pm 2.7\pm 2.6) MeV for the Z_c(4020), where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. No significant Z_c(3900) signal is observed, and upper limits on the Z_c(3900) production cross sections in π^\pm h_c at center-of-mass energies of 4.23 and 4.26 GeV are set.

Based on $(106.41 \pm 0.86)\times 10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the branching fractions of $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^- J/ψ$, $J/ψ\to e^+e^- $, and $J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-$ are measured. We obtain ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-J/ψ]=(34.98\pm 0.02\pm 0.45)%$, ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] = (5.983 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.037)%$ and ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = (5.973 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.038)%$. The measurement of ${\cal B}[ψ(3686) \to π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ]$ confirms the CLEO-c measurement, and is apparently larger than the others. The measured $J/ψ$ leptonic decay branching fractions agree with previous experiments within one standard deviation. These results lead to ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to l^+l^-] = (5.978 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.040)%$ by averaging over the $e^{+}e^{-}$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ channels and a ratio of ${\cal B}[J/ψ\to e^+e^-] / {\cal B}[J/ψ\to μ^+μ^-] = 1.0017 \pm 0.0017 \pm 0.0033$, which tests $e$-$μ$ universality at the four tenths of a percent level. All the measurements presented in this paper are the most precise in the world to date.

First observation of the M1 transition $ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S)$

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S). The data are used to obtain measurements of the η_c(2S) mass (M(η_c(2S))=3637.6\pm 2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width (Γ(η_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the product branching fraction (\BR(ψ(3686)\to γη_c(2S))\times \BR(η_c(2S)\to K\bar Kπ) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Implications of ultra-high energy neutrino flux constraints for Lorentz-invariance violating cosmogenic neutrinos

We consider the implications of Lorentz-invariance violation (LIV) on cosmogenic neutrino observations, with particular focus on the constraints imposed on several well-developed models for ultra-high energy cosmogenic neutrino production by recent results from the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) long-duration balloon payload, and Radio Ice Cherenkov Experiment (RICE) at the South Pole. Under a scenario proposed originally by Coleman and Glashow, each lepton family may attain maximum velocities that can exceed the speed of light, leading to energy-loss through several interaction channels during propagation. We show that future observations of cosmogenic neutrinos will provide by far the most stringent limit on LIV in the neutrino sector. We derive the implied level of LIV required to suppress observation of predicted fluxes from several mainstream cosmogenic neutrino models, and specifically those recently constrained by the ANITA and RICE experiments. We simulate via detailed Monte Carlo code the propagation of cosmogenic neutrino fluxes in the presence of LIV-induced energy losses. We show that this process produces several detectable effects in the resulting attenuated neutrino spectra, even at LIV-induced neutrino superluminality of (u_ν-c)/c ~ 10^{-26}, about 13 orders of magnitude below current bounds.

Precision measurements of branching fractions for $ ψ'\toπ^0 Jψ$ and $ηJψ$

We present a precision study of the $\psip\toπ^0 J/ψ$ and $ηJ/ψ$ decay modes. The measurements are obtained using $106\times10^6$ $ψ'$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $\ee$ collider operating at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the $\psip$ mass. We obtain $\mathcal{B}(\psip\toπ^0 J/ψ)=(1.26\pm0.02{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.03{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\psip\toηJ/ψ)=(33.75\pm0.17{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.86{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-3}$. The branching fraction ratio $R=\frac{\mathcal{B}(\psip\toπ^0 J/ψ)}{\mathcal{B}(\psip\toηJ/ψ)}$ is determined to be $(3.74\pm0.06 {\rm(stat.)}\pm0.04 {\rm(syst.)})\times 10^{-2}$. The precision of these measurements of $\mathcal{B}(\psip\toπ^{0} J/ψ)$ and $R$ represent a significant improvement over previously published values.

Search for hadronic transition $χ_{cJ}\toη_{c}π^{+}π^{-}$ and observation of $χ_{cJ}\to K\bar{K}πππ$

Hadronic transitions of $χ_{cJ}\to η_{c}π^{+}π^{-}$ (J=0, 1, 2) are searched for using a sample of $1.06\times 10^{8}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The $\etac$ is reconstructed with $K_{S}^{0}K^{+}π^{-}+c.c.$ and $K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}$ final states. No signals are observed in any of the three $χ_{cJ}$ states in either $\etac$ decay mode. At the 90% confidence level, the upper limits are determined to be $\BR(χ_{c0}\to η_{c}π^{+}π^{-})<0.07%$, $\BR(χ_{c1}\to η_{c}π^{+}π^{-})<0.32%$, and $\BR(χ_{c2}\to η_{c}π^{+}π^{-})<0.54%$. The upper limit of $\BR(χ_{c1}\to η_{c}π^{+}π^{-}$ is lower than the existing theoretical prediction by almost an order of magnitude. The branching fractions of $χ_{cJ}\to K_{S}^{0}K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}+c.c.$, $K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$, $ωK^{+}K^{-}$ and $ϕπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ (J=0, 1, 2) are measured for the first time.

Study of $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$

The decays $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$ have been investigated with a sample of 225.2 million $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p\bar{p})=(2.112\pm0.004\pm0.031)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to n\bar{n})=(2.07\pm0.01\pm0.17)\times10^{-3}$. Distributions of the angle $θ$ between the proton or anti-neutron and the beam direction are well described by the form $1+α\cos^2θ$, and we find $α=0.595\pm0.012\pm0.015$ for $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}$ and $α=0.50\pm0.04\pm0.21$ for $J/ψ\to n\bar{n}$. Our branching-fraction results suggest a large phase angle between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes describing the $J/ψ\to N\bar{N}$ decay.

Study of the near-threshold $ωϕ$ mass enhancement in doubly OZI suppressed $J/ψ\to γωϕ$ decays

A 2.25$\times10^8$ $\jpsi$ event sample accumulated with the BESIII detector is used to study the doubly OZI suppressed decay modes $\jpsi\toγ\of$, $ω\to\ppp$, $ϕ\to\kk$. A strong deviation ($>$ 30$σ$) from three-body $\jpsi\toγωϕ$ phase space is observed near the $ωϕ$ mass threshold that is consistent with a previous observation reported by the BESII experiment. A partial wave analysis with a tensor covariant amplitude that assumes that the enhancement is due to the presence of a resonance, the X(1810), is performed, and confirms that the spin-parity of the X(1810) is $0^{++}$. The mass and width of the X(1810) are determined to be $M=1795\pm7$(stat)$^{+13}_{-5}$(syst)$\pm$19(mod) MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ=95\pm10$(stat)$^{+21}_{-34}$(syst)$\pm$75(mod) MeV/$c^2$, respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(\jpsi\toγX(1810))\times{\cal B}(X(1810)\to\of)=(2.00\pm0.08$(stat)$^{+0.45}_{-1.00}$(syst)$\pm$1.30(mod))$\times10^{-4}$. %where the first error is the statistical error and the second the systematical error. These results are consistent within errors with those of the BESII experiment.

Two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states and helicity analysis for $χ_{c2}\arγγ$}

Based on a data sample of 106 M $ψ^{\prime}$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0, 2}$,$χ_{c0, 2}\arγγ$ are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(χ_{c0}\arγγ) = (2.24\pm 0.19\pm 0.12\pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(χ_{c2}\arγγ) = (3.21\pm 0.18\pm 0.17\pm 0.13)\times 10^{-4}$. From these, the two-photon widths are determined to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0}) = (2.33\pm0.20\pm0.13\pm0.17)$ keV, $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.63\pm0.04\pm0.04\pm0.04)$ keV, and $\cal R$ $=Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})=0.271\pm 0.029\pm 0.013\pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG ${\cal B}(ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0,2})$ and $Γ(χ_{c0,2})$ errors, respectively. The ratio of the two-photon widths for helicity $λ=0$ and helicity $λ=2$ components in the decay $χ_{c2}\arγγ$ is measured for the first time to be $f_{0/2} =Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = 0.00\pm0.02\pm0.02$.

The beam energy measurement system for the Beijing electron-positron collider

The beam energy measurement system (BEMS) for the upgraded Beijing electron-positron collider BEPC-II is described. The system is based on measuring the energies of Compton back-scattered photons. The relative systematic uncertainty of the electron and positron beam energy determination is estimated as 2 \cdot 10^{-5}. The relative uncertainty of the beam's energy spread is about 6 %.

The ExaVolt Antenna: A Large-Aperture, Balloon-embedded Antenna for Ultra-high Energy Particle Detection

We describe the scientific motivation, experimental basis, design methodology, and simulated performance of the ExaVolt Antenna (EVA) mission, and planned ultra-high energy (UHE) particle observatory under development for NASA's suborbital super-pressure balloon program in Antarctica. EVA will improve over ANITA's integrated totals - the current state-of-the-art in UHE suborbital payloads - by 1-2 orders of magnitude in a single flight. The design is based on a novel application of toroidal reflector optics which utilizes a super-pressure balloon surface, along with a feed-array mounted on an inner membrane, to create an ultra-large radio antenna system with a synoptic view of the Antarctic ice sheet below it. Radio impulses arise via the Askaryan effect when UHE neutrinos interact within the ice, or via geosynchrotron emission when UHE cosmic rays interact in the atmosphere above the continent. EVA's instantaneous antenna aperture is estimated to be several hundred square meters for detection of these events within a 150-600 MHz band. For standard cosmogenic UHE neutrino models, EVA should detect of order 30 events per flight in the EeV energy regime. For UHE cosmic rays, of order 15,000 geosynchrotron events would be detected in total, several hundred above 10 EeV, and of order 60 above the GZK cutoff energy

The First Limits on the Ultra-high Energy Neutrino Fluence from Gamma-ray Bursts

We set the first limits on the ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino fluence at energies greater than 10^9 GeV from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) based on data from the second flight of the ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA). During the 31 day flight of ANITA-II, 26 GRBs were recorded by Swift or Fermi. Of these, we analyzed the 12 GRBs which occurred during quiet periods when the payload was away from anthropogenic activity. In a blind analysis, we observe 0 events on a total background of 0.0044 events in the combined prompt window for all 12 low-background bursts. We also observe 0 events from the remaining 14 bursts. We place a 90% confidence level limit on the E^-4 prompt neutrino fluence of 2.5x10^17 GeV^3/cm^2 between 10^8 and 10^12 GeV from GRB090107A. This is the first reported limit on the UHE neutrino fluence from GRBs above 10^9 GeV, and the strongest limit above 10^8 GeV.

Ultra-Relativistic Magnetic Monopole Search with the ANITA-II Balloon-borne Radio Interferometer

We have conducted a search for extended energy deposition trails left by ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles interacting in Antarctic ice. The non-observation of any satisfactory candidates in the 31 days of accumulated ANITA-II flight data results in an upper limit on the diffuse flux of relativistic monopoles. We obtain a 90% C.L. limit of order 10^{-19}/(cm^2-s-sr) for values of Lorentz boost factor 10^{10}<gamma at the anticipated energy E=10^{16} GeV. This bound is stronger than all previously published experimental limits for this kinematic range.

KEKB Beam Collision Stability at the Picosecond Timing and Micron Position Resolution as observed with the Belle Detector

Using the Belle detector we study the characteristics of beam collisions at the KEKB 3.5 GeV $e^+$ on 8 GeV $e^-$ asymmetric energy collider. We investigate the collision timing {\tip} and its $z$-coordinate along the beam axis {\zip} as a function of the position of the colliding bunch in a beam train. The various {\tip} and {\zip} behaviors observed by Belle are attributed to beam loading effects in the radio frequency cavities that accelerate the beams with a beam abort gap. We report these results in detail and discuss the prospects for the SuperKEKB collider.

Observation of Ultra-high-energy Cosmic Rays with the ANITA Balloon-borne Radio Interferometer

We report the observation of sixteen cosmic ray events of mean energy of 1.5 x 10^{19} eV, via radio pulses originating from the interaction of the cosmic ray air shower with the Antarctic geomagnetic field, a process known as geosynchrotron emission. We present the first ultra-wideband, far-field measurements of the radio spectral density of geosynchrotron emission in the range from 300-1000 MHz. The emission is 100% linearly polarized in the plane perpendicular to the projected geomagnetic field. Fourteen of our observed events are seen to have a phase-inversion due to reflection of the radio beam off the ice surface, and two additional events are seen directly from above the horizon.

AURA - A radio frequency extension to IceCube

The excellent radio frequency transparency of cold polar ice, combined with the coherent Cherenkov emission produced by neutrino-induced showers when viewed at wavelengths longer than a few centimeters, has spurred considerable interest in a large-scale radio-wave neutrino detector array. The AURA (Askaryan Under-ice Radio Array) experimental effort, within the IceCube collaboration, seeks to take advantage of the opportunity presented by IceCube drilling through 2010 to establish the radio frequency technology needed to achieve 100-1000 km^3 effective volumes. In the 2006-2007 Austral summer 3 deep in-ice radio frequency (RF) clusters were deployed at depths of 1300m and 300m on top of the IceCube strings. Additional 3 clusters will be deployed in the Austral summer of 2008-2009. Verification and calibration results from the current deployed clusters are presented, and the detector design and performances are discussed. Augmentation of IceCube with large-scale 1000km^3sr radio and acoustic arrays would extend the physics reach of IceCube into the EeV-ZeV regime and offer substantial technological redundancy.

Tuning into UHE Neutrinos in Antarctica - The ANITA Experiment

The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment is being developed to search for ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrino interactions ($>3\times10^{18}$ eV) in the Antarctic ice cap. A neutrino interaction in the ice will produce a radio pulse by the means of the Askaryan effect. The large radio transparency of ice allows for such a pulse to be recorded by a cluster of balloon-borne antennas. The details of the ANITA instrument, now in a construction phase, and the science we hope to achieve is discussed. In order to prepare for the main mission, we have flown ANITA-lite during the 2003/04 austral season. ANITA-lite consisted of two quad-ridge horn antennas and a prototype RF (radio frequency) triggering and recording system. Here we present the results of an impulsive RF background survey of Antarctica, as well as proof-of-principle gain, tracking, and timing calibrations conducted by observing solar radio emissions and calibration radio-pulses. A preliminary UHE neutrino flux limit based on ANITA-lite data is also presented.

Status of ANITA and ANITA-lite

We describe a new experiment to search for neutrinos with energies above 3 x 10^18 eV based on the observation of short duration radio pulses that are emitted from neutrino-initiated cascades. The primary objective of the ANtarctic Impulse Transient Antenna (ANITA) mission is to measure the flux of Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) neutrinos and search for neutrinos from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We present first results obtained from the successful launch of a 2-antenna prototype instrument (called ANITA-lite) that circled Antarctica for 18 days during the 03/04 Antarctic campaign and show preliminary results from attenuation length studies of electromagnetic waves at radio frequencies in Antarctic ice. The ANITA detector is funded by NASA, and the first flight is scheduled for December 2006.
