Reconstruction of atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE's horizontal-drift far-detector module

This paper reports on the capabilities in reconstructing and identifying atmospheric neutrino interactions in one of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment's (DUNE) far detector modules, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) with horizontal drift (FD-HD) of ionization electrons. The reconstruction is based upon the workflow developed for DUNE's long-baseline oscillation analysis, with some necessary machine-learning models' retraining and the addition of features relevant only to atmospheric neutrinos such as the neutrino direction reconstruction. Where relevant, the impact of the detection of the charged particles of the hadronic system is emphasized, and comparisons are carried out between the case when lepton-only information is considered in the reconstruction (as is the case for many neutrino oscillation experiments), versus when all particles identified in the LArTPC were included. Three neutrino direction reconstruction methods have been developed and studied for the atmospheric analyses: using lepton-only information, using all reconstructed particles, and using only correlations from reconstructed hits. The results indicate that incorporating more than just lepton information significantly improves the resolution of both neutrino direction and energy reconstruction. The angle reconstruction algorithms developed in this work result in no strong dependence on particle direction for reconstruction efficiencies or neutrino flavor identification. This comprehensive review of the reconstruction of atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE's FD-HD LArTPC is the first step towards developing a first neutrino oscillation sensitivity analysis, which will ready DUNE for its first measurements.

An Energy-dependent Electro-thermal Response Model of CUORE Cryogenic Calorimeter

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most sensitive experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) in $^{130}\text{Te}$. CUORE uses a cryogenic array of 988 TeO$_2$ calorimeters operated at $\sim$10 mK with a total mass of 741 kg. To further increase the sensitivity, the detector response must be well understood. Here, we present a non-linear thermal model for the CUORE experiment on a detector-by-detector basis. We have examined both equilibrium and dynamic electro-thermal models of detectors by numerically fitting non-linear differential equations to the detector data of a subset of CUORE channels which are well characterized and representative of all channels. We demonstrate that the hot-electron effect and electric-field dependence of resistance in NTD-Ge thermistors alone are inadequate to describe our detectors' energy dependent pulse shapes. We introduce an empirical second-order correction factor in the exponential temperature dependence of the thermistor, which produces excellent agreement with energy-dependent pulse shape data up to 6 MeV. We also present a noise analysis using the fitted thermal parameters and show that the intrinsic thermal noise is negligible compared to the observed noise for our detectors.

First cryogenic tests on BINGO innovations

Neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu2β$) is a hypothetical rare nuclear transition. Its observation would provide an important insight about the nature of neutrinos (Dirac or Majorana particle) demonstrating that the lepton number is not conserved. BINGO (Bi-Isotope $0\nu2β$ Next Generation Observatory) aims to set the technological grounds for future bolometric $0\nu2β$ experiments. It is based on a dual heat-light readout, i.e. a main scintillating absorber embedding the double-beta decay isotope accompanied by a cryogenic light detector. BINGO will study two of the most promising isotopes: $^{100}$Mo embedded in Li$_2$MoO$_4$ (LMO) crystals and $^{130}$Te embedded in TeO$_2$. BINGO technology will reduce dramatically the background in the region of interest, thus boosting the discovery sensitivity of $0\nu2β$. The proposed solutions will have a high impact on next-generation bolometric tonne-scale experiments, like CUPID. In this contribution, we present the results obtained during the first tests performed in the framework of BINGO R&D.

New measurement of double beta decays of $^{100}$Mo to excited states of $^{100}$Ru with the CUPID-Mo experiment

The CUPID-Mo experiment, located at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), was a demonstrator experiment for CUPID. It consisted of an array of 20 Li$_2^{100}$MoO$_4$ (LMO) calorimeters each equipped with a Ge light detector (LD) for particle identification. In this work, we present the result of a search for two-neutrino and neutrinoless double beta decays of $^{100}$Mo to the first 0$^+$ and $2^+$ excited states of $^{100}$Ru using the full CUPID-Mo exposure (2.71 kg$\times$yr of LMO). We measure the half-life of $2νββ$ decay to the $0^{+}_1$ state as $T_{1/2}^{2ν\rightarrow 0_1^+}=7.5\pm 0.8 \ \text{(stat.)} \ ^{+ 0.4}_{-0.3} \ \text{(syst.)} )\times 10^{20} \ \mathrm{yr}$. The bolometric technique enables measurement of the electron energies as well as the gamma rays from nuclear de-excitation and this allows us to set new limits on the two-neutrino decay to the $2_1^+$ state of $T^{2ν\rightarrow 2_1^+}_{1/2}>4.4\times 10^{21} \ \mathrm{yr} \ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$ and on the neutrinoless modes of $T_{1/2}^{0ν\rightarrow 2_1^+}>2.1\times10^{23} \ \mathrm{yr}\ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$, $T_{1/2}^{0ν\rightarrow 0_1^+}>1.2\times10^{23} \ \mathrm{yr}\ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$. Information on the electrons spectral shape is obtained which allows us to make the first comparison of the single state (SSD) and higher state (HSD) $2νββ$ decay models for the $0_1^+$ excited state of $^{100}$Ru.

Optimization of the first CUPID detector module

CUPID will be a next generation experiment searching for the neutrinoless double $β$ decay, whose discovery would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Based on the experience achieved with the CUORE experiment, presently taking data at LNGS, CUPID aims to reach a background free environment by means of scintillating Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals coupled to light detectors. Indeed, the simultaneous heat and light detection allows us to reject the dominant background of $α$ particles, as proven by the CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo demonstrators. In this work we present the results of the first test of the CUPID baseline module. In particular, we propose a new optimized detector structure and light sensors design to enhance the engineering and the light collection, respectively. We characterized the heat detectors, achieving an energy resolution of (5.9 $\pm$ 0.2) keV FWHM at the $Q$-value of $^{100}$Mo (about 3034 keV). We studied the light collection of the baseline CUPID design with respect to an alternative configuration which features gravity-assisted light detectors' mounting. In both cases we obtained an improvement in the light collection with respect to past measures and we validated the particle identification capability of the detector, which ensures an $α$ particle rejection higher than 99.9%, fully satisfying the requirements for CUPID.

Radiopurity of a kg-scale PbWO$_4$ cryogenic detector produced from archaeological Pb for the RES-NOVA experiment

RES-NOVA is a newly proposed experiment for the detection of neutrinos from astrophysical sources, mainly Supernovae, using an array of cryogenic detectors made of PbWO$_4$ crystals produced from archaeological Pb. This unconventional material, characterized by intrinsic high radiopurity, enables to achieve low-background levels in the region of interest for the neutrino detection via Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$ν$NS). This signal lies at the detector energy threshold, O(1 keV), and it is expected to be hidden by naturally occurring radioactive contaminants of the crystal absorber. Here, we present the results of a radiopurity assay on a 0.84 kg PbWO$_4$ crystal produced from archaeological Pb operated as a cryogenic detector. The crystal internal radioactive contaminations are: $^{232}$Th $<$40 $μ$Bq/kg, $^{238}$U $<$30 $μ$Bq/kg, $^{226}$Ra 1.3 mBq/kg and $^{210}$Pb 22.5 mBq/kg. We present also a background projection for the final experiment and possible mitigation strategies for further background suppression. The achieved results demonstrate the feasibility of realizing this new class of detectors.

Search for Majorana neutrinos exploiting millikelvin cryogenics with CUORE

The possibility that neutrinos may be their own antiparticles, unique among the known fundamental particles, arises from the symmetric theory of fermions proposed by Ettore Majorana in 1937. Given the profound consequences of such Majorana neutrinos, among which is a potential explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis, the Majorana nature of neutrinos commands intense experimental scrutiny globally; one of the primary experimental probes is neutrinoless double beta ($0 νββ$) decay. Here we show results from the search for $0 νββ$ decay of $^{130}$Te, using the latest advanced cryogenic calorimeters with the CUORE experiment. CUORE, operating just 10 millikelvin above absolute zero, has pushed the state of the art on three frontiers: the sheer mass held at such ultra-low temperatures, operational longevity, and the low levels of ionising radiation emanating from the cryogenic infrastructure. We find no evidence for $0 νββ$ decay and set a lower bound of $T_{1/2}^{0 ν} > 2.2 \times 10^{25}$ years at a 90% credibility interval. We discuss potential applications of the advances made with CUORE to other fields such as direct dark matter, neutrino and nuclear physics searches and large-scale quantum computing, which can benefit from sustained operation of large payloads in a low-radioactivity, ultra-low temperature cryogenic environment.

Search for Neutrinoless $β^+EC$ Decay of $^{120}$Te with CUORE

CUORE is a large scale cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) in $^{130}$Te. The CUORE detector is made of natural tellurium, providing the possibility of rare event searches on isotopes other than $^{130}$Te. In this work we describe a search for neutrinoless positron emitting electron capture ($0νβ^+EC$) decay in $^{120}$Te with a total TeO$_2$ exposure of 355.7 kg $\cdot$ yr, corresponding to 0.2405 kg $\cdot$ yr of $^{120}$Te. Albeit $0 νββ$ with two final state electrons represents the most promising channel, the emission of a positron and two 511-keV $γ$s make $0νβ^+EC$ decay signature extremely clear. To fully exploit the potential offered by the detector modularity we include events with different topology and perform a simultaneous fit of five selected signal signatures. Using blinded data we extract a median exclusion sensitivity of $3.4 \cdot 10^{22}$ yr at 90% Credibility Interval (C.I.). After unblinding we find no evidence of $0νβ^+EC$ signal and set a 90% C.I. Bayesian lower limit of $2.9 \cdot 10^{22}$ yr on $^{120}$Te half-life. This result improves by an order of magnitude the existing limit from the combined analysis of CUORE-0 and Cuoricino.

Toward CUPID-1T

Current experiments to search for broken lepton-number symmetry through the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\mathrm{νββ}$) provide the most stringent limits on the Majorana nature of neutrinos and the effective Majorana neutrino mass ($m_{ββ}$). The next-generation experiments will focus on the sensitivity to the $0\mathrm{νββ}$ half-life of $\mathcal{O}(10^{27}$--$10^{28}$~years$)$ and $m_{ββ}\lesssim15$~meV, which would provide complete coverage of the so-called Inverted Ordering region of the neutrino mass parameter space. By taking advantage of recent technological breakthroughs, new, future calorimetric experiments at the 1-ton scale can increase the sensitivity by at least another order of magnitude, exploring the large fraction of the parameter space that corresponds to the Normal neutrino mass ordering. In case of a discovery, such experiments could provide important insights toward a new understanding of the mechanism of $0\mathrm{νββ}$. We present here a series of projects underway that will provide advancements in background reduction, cryogenic readout, and physics searches beyond $0\mathrm{νββ}$, all moving toward the next-to-next generation CUPID-1T detector.

New results from the CUORE experiment

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Following the completion of the detector construction in August 2016, CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK. Following multiple optimization campaigns in 2018, CUORE is currently in stable operating mode. In 2019, CUORE released its 2\textsuperscript{nd} result of the search for $0νββ$ with a TeO$_2$ exposure of 372.5 kg$\cdot$yr and a median exclusion sensitivity to a $^{130}$Te $0νββ$ decay half-life of $1.7\cdot 10^{25}$ yr. We find no evidence for $0νββ$ decay and set a 90\% C.I. (credibility interval) Bayesian lower limit of $3.2\cdot 10^{25}$ yr on the $^{130}$Te $0νββ$ decay half-life. In this work, we present the current status of CUORE's search for $0νββ$, as well as review the detector performance. Finally, we give an update of the CUORE background model and the measurement of the $^{130}$Te two neutrino double-beta ($2νββ$) decay half-life.

Progress in the development of TES microcalorimeter detectors suitable for neutrino mass measurement

The HOLMES experiment will perform a precise calorimetric measurement of the end point of the Electron Capture (EC) decay spectrum of 163Ho in order to extract information on neutrino mass with a sensitivity below 2 eV. In its final configuration, HOLMES will deploy 1000 detectors of low-temperature microcalorimeters with implanted 163Ho nuclei. The baseline sensors for HOLMES are Mo/Cu TESs (Transition Edge Sensors) on SiNx membrane with gold absorbers. Considering the large number of pixels and an event rate of about 300 Hz/pixel, a large multiplexing factor and a large bandwidth are needed. To fulfill this requirement, HOLMES will exploit recent advances in microwave multiplexing. In this contribution, we present the status of the activities in development, the performances of the developed microwave-multiplexed readout system, and the results obtained with the detectors specifically designed for HOLMES in terms of noise, time, and energy resolutions

A low noise and low power cryogenic amplifier for single photoelectron sensitivity with large arrays of SiPMs

This paper presents a low noise amplifier for large arrays of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) operated in cryogenic environments, especially liquid argon (87 K) and liquid nitrogen (77 K). The goal is for one amplifier to read out a total photosensitive surface of tens of cm$^2$ while retaining the capability to resolve single photoelectron signals. Due to the large capacitance of SiPMs, typically a few nF per cm$^2$, the main contributor to noise is the series (voltage) component. A silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) was selected as the input device of the cryogenic amplifier, followed by a fully differential operational amplifier, operated in an unconventional feedback configuration. The input referred voltage noise of the circuit at 77 K is just below 0.4 nV/$\surd$Hz white (above 100 kHz) and 1 nV/$\surd$Hz at 10 kHz. The value of the base spreading resistance of the HBT at 77 K was determined from noise measurements at different bias currents. Power consumption of the full circuit is about 2.5 mW. The design gives the flexibility to optimally compensate the feedback loop for different values of the input capacitance, and obtain a gain-bandwidth product in the GHz range. The signal-to-noise ratio obtained in reading out SiPMs is discussed for the case of a 300 kHz low pass filter and compared with the upper limit that would derive from applying optimum filtering algorithms.

Search for double $β$-decay modes of $^{64}$Zn using purified zinc

The production of ultra-pure raw material is a crucial step to ensure the required background level in rare event searches. In this work, we establish an innovative technique developed to produce high-purity (99.999%) granular zinc. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the refining procedure by measuring the internal contaminations of the purified zinc with a high-purity germanium detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The total activity of cosmogenic activated nuclides is measured at the level of a few mBq/kg, as well as limits on naturally occurring radionuclides are set to less than mBq/kg. The excellent radiopurity of the zinc sample allows us to search for electron capture with positron emission and neutrinoless double electron capture of $^{64}$Zn, setting the currently most stringent lower limits on their half-lives, $T_{1/2}^{\varepsilonβ^+} > 2.7 \times 10^{21}\text{yr}$ (90% C.I.), and $T_{1/2}^{0\nu2\varepsilon}> 2.6 \times 10^{21}\text{yr}$ (90% C.I.), respectively.

Search for Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay of $^{64}$Zn and $^{70}$Zn with CUPID-0

CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project searching for neutrino-less double beta decay. In its first scientific run, CUPID-0 operated 26 ZnSe cryogenic calorimeters coupled to light detectors in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we analyzed a ZnSe exposure of 11.34 kg$\times$yr to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{70}$Zn and for the neutrino-less positron-emitting electron capture of $^{64}$Zn. We found no evidence for these decays and set 90$\%$ credible interval limits of ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0νββ}(^{70}{\rm Zn}) > 1.6 \times 10^{21}$ yr and ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0νEC β+}(^{64}{\rm Zn}) > 1.2 \times 10^{22}$ yr, surpassing by almost two orders of magnitude the previous experimental results

Evidence of Single State Dominance in the Two-Neutrino Double-$β$ Decay of Se-82 with CUPID-0

We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-$β$ decay of $^{82}$Se performed for the first time with cryogenic calorimeters, in the framework of the CUPID-0~experiment. With an exposure of 9.95 kg$\times$yr of Zn$^{82}$Se, we determine the two-neutrino double-$β$ decay half-life of $^{82}$Se with an unprecedented precision level, $T_{1/2}^{2ν} = [8.60 \pm 0.03 \textrm{(stat.)}~^{+0.17}_{-0.10} \textrm{(syst.)}] \times 10^{19}~\textrm{yr}$. The very high signal-to-background ratio, along with the detailed reconstruction of the background sources allowed us to identify the single state dominance as the underlying mechanism of such process, demonstrating that the higher state dominance hypothesis is disfavored at the level of 5.5 $σ$.

First data from the CUPID-Mo neutrinoless double beta decay experiment

The CUPID-Mo experiment is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo, evaluating the technology of cryogenic scintillating Li$_{2}^{100}$MoO$_4$ detectors for CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle ID). CUPID-Mo detectors feature background suppression using a dual-readout scheme with Li$_{2}$MoO$_4$ crystals complemented by Ge bolometers for light detection. The detection of both heat and scintillation light signals allows the efficient discrimination of $α$ from $γ$&$β$ events. In this proceedings, we discuss results from the first 2 months of data taking in spring 2019. In addition to an excellent bolometric performance of 6.7$\,$keV (FWHM) at 2615$\,$keV and an $α$ separation of better than 99.9\% for all detectors, we report on bulk radiopurity for Th and U. Finally, we interpret the accumulated physics data in terms of a limit of $T_{1/2}^{0ν}\,> 3\times10^{23}\,$yr for $^{100}$Mo and discuss the sensitivity of CUPID-Mo until the expected end of physics data taking in early 2020.

Improved Limit on Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay in $^{130}$Te with CUORE

We report new results from the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{130}$Te with the CUORE detector. This search benefits from a four-fold increase in exposure, lower trigger thresholds and analysis improvements relative to our previous results. We observe a background of $(1.38\pm0.07)\cdot10^{-2}$ counts$/($keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr$)$ in the $0νββ$ decay region of interest and, with a total exposure of 372.5 kg$\cdot$yr, we attain a median exclusion sensitivity of $1.7\cdot10^{25}$ yr. We find no evidence for $0νββ$ decay and set a $90\%$ CI Bayesian lower limit of $3.2\cdot10^{25}$ yr on the $^{130}$Te half-life for this process. In the hypothesis that $0νββ$ decay is mediated by light Majorana neutrinos, this results in an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass of 75-350 meV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used.

Precise measurement of $2νββ$ decay of $^{100}$Mo with the CUPID-Mo detection technology

We report the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta ($2νββ$) decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru using lithium molybdate (\crystal) scintillating bolometers. The detectors were developed for the CUPID-Mo program and operated at the EDELWEISS-III low background facility in the Modane underground laboratory. From a total exposure of $42.235$ kg$\times$d, the half-life of $^{100}$Mo is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2ν}=[7.12^{+0.18}_{-0.14}\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm0.10\,\mathrm{(syst.)}]\times10^{18}$ years. This is the most accurate determination of the $2νββ$ half-life of $^{100}$Mo to date. We also confirm, with the statistical significance of $>3σ$, that the single-state dominance model of the $2νββ$ decay of $^{100}$Mo is favored over the high-state dominance model.

Production and characterization of a PbMoO$_4$ cryogenic detector from archaeological Pb

We operated a PbMoO$_4$ scintillating cryogenic detector of 570 g, produced with archaeological lead. This compound features excellent low temperature characteristics in terms of light yield, 12 keV/MeV for $β/γ$ interactions, and FWHM energy resolution, 11.7 keV at 2.6 MeV. Furthermore, the detector allows for an effective particle identification by means of pulse shape analysis on the heat read-out channel. The implementation of innovative techniques and procedures for the purification of raw materials used for the crystal growth, and the highly-pure archaeological Pb, allowed the production of large volume high quality crystal. The overall characteristics of the detector operated at cryogenic temperatures makes PbMoO$_4$ an excellent compound for neutrino physics applications, especially neutrinoless double-beta studies.

The $0\nu2β$-decay CROSS experiment: preliminary results and prospects

Neutrinoless double-beta decay is a key process in particle physics. Its experimental investigation is the only viable method that can establish the Majorana nature of neutrinos, providing at the same time a sensitive inclusive test of lepton number violation. CROSS (Cryogenic Rare-event Observatory with Surface Sensitivity) aims at developing and testing a new bolometric technology to be applied to future large-scale experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay of the promising nuclei $^{100}$Mo and $^{130}$Te. The limiting factor in large-scale bolometric searches for this rare process is the background induced by surface radioactive contamination, as shown by the results of the CUORE experiment. The basic concept of CROSS consists of rejecting this challenging background component by pulse-shape discrimination, assisted by a proper coating of the faces of the crystal containing the isotope of interest and serving as energy absorber of the bolometric detector. In this paper, we demonstrate that ultra-pure superconductive Al films deposited on the crystal surfaces act successfully as pulse-shape modifiers, both with fast and slow phonon sensors. Rejection factors higher than 99.9% of $α$ surface radioactivity have been demonstrated in a series of prototypes based on crystals of Li$_2$MoO$_4$ and TeO$_2$. We have also shown that point-like energy depositions can be identified up to a distance of $\sim 1$ mm from the coated surface. The present program envisions an intermediate experiment to be installed underground in the Canfranc laboratory (Spain) in a CROSS-dedicated facility. This experiment, comprising $\sim 3\times 10^{25}$ nuclei of $^{100}$Mo, will be a general test of the CROSS technology as well as a worldwide competitive search for neutrinoless double-beta decay, with sensitivity to the effective Majorana mass down to 70 meV in the most favorable conditions.

The CUPID-Mo experiment for neutrinoless double-beta decay: performance and prospects

CUPID-Mo is a bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) of $^{100}$Mo. In this article, we detail the CUPID-Mo detector concept, assembly, installation in the underground laboratory in Modane in 2018, and provide results from the first datasets. The demonstrator consists of an array of 20 scintillating bolometers comprised of $^{100}$Mo-enriched 0.2 kg Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystals. The detectors are complemented by 20 thin cryogenic Ge bolometers acting as light detectors to distinguish $α$ from $γ$/$β$ events by the detection of both heat and scintillation light signals. We observe good detector uniformity, facilitating the operation of a large detector array as well as excellent energy resolution of 5.3 keV (6.5 keV) FWHM at 2615 keV, in calibration (physics) data. Based on the observed energy resolutions and light yields a separation of $α$ particles at much better than 99.9\% with equally high acceptance for $γ$/$β$ events is expected for events in the region of interest for $^{100}$Mo $0νββ$. We present limits on the crystals' radiopurity ($\leq$3 $μ$Bq/kg of $^{226}$Ra and $\leq$2 $μ$Bq/kg of $^{232}$Th). Based on these initial results we also discuss a sensitivity study for the science reach of the CUPID-Mo experiment, in particular, the ability to set the most stringent half-life limit on the $^{100}$Mo $0νββ$ decay after half a year of livetime. The achieved results show that CUPID-Mo is a successful demonstrator of the technology - developed in the framework of the LUMINEU project - selected for the CUPID experiment, a proposed follow-up of CUORE, the currently running first tonne-scale cryogenic $0νββ$ experiment.

Double-beta decay of ${}^{130}$Te to the first $0^+$ excited state of ${}^{130}$Xe with CUORE-0

We report on a search for double beta decay of $^{130}$Te to the first $0^{+}$ excited state of $^{130}$Xe using a 9.8 kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te collected with the CUORE-0 experiment. In this work we exploit different topologies of coincident events to search for both the neutrinoless and two-neutrino double-decay modes. We find no evidence for either mode and place lower bounds on the half-lives: $τ^{0ν}_{0^+}>7.9\cdot 10^{23}$ yr and $τ^{2ν}_{0^+}>2.4\cdot 10^{23}$ yr. Combining our results with those obtained by the CUORICINO experiment, we achieve the most stringent constraints available for these processes: $τ^{0ν}_{0^+}>1.4\cdot 10^{24}$ yr and $τ^{2ν}_{0^+}>2.5\cdot 10^{23}$ yr.

Results of the first NaI scintillating calorimeter prototypes by COSINUS

Over almost three decades the TAUP conference has seen a remarkable momentum gain in direct dark matter search. An important accelerator were first indications for a modulating signal rate in the DAMA/NaI experiment reported in 1997. Today the presence of an annual modulation, which matches in period and phase the expectation for dark matter, is supported at > 9$σ$ confidence. The underlying nature of dark matter, however, is still considered an open and fundamental question of particle physics. No other direct dark matter search could confirm the DAMA claim up to now; moreover, numerous null-results are in clear contradiction under so-called standard assumptions for the dark matter halo and the interaction mechanism of dark with ordinary matter. As both bear a dependence on the target material, resolving this controversial situation will convincingly only be possible with an experiment using sodium iodide (NaI) as target. COSINUS aims to even go a step further by combining NaI with a novel detection approach. COSINUS aims to operate NaI as a cryogenic calorimeter reading scintillation light and phonon/heat signal. Two distinct advantages arise from this approach, a substantially lower energy threshold for nuclear recoils and particle identification on an event-by-event basis. These key benefits will allow COSINUS to clarify a possible nuclear recoil origin of the DAMA signal with comparatively little exposure of O(100kg days) and, thereby, answer a long-standing question of particle physics. Today COSINUS is in R&D phase; in this contribution we show results from the 2nd prototype, albeit the first one of the final foreseen detector design. The key finding of this measurement is that pure, undoped NaI is a truly excellent scintillator at low temperatures: We measure 13.1% of the total deposited energy in the NaI crystal in the form of scintillation light (in the light detector).

A CsI low temperature detector for dark matter search

Cryogenic detectors have a long history of success in the field of rare event searches. In particular scintillating calorimeters are very suitable detectors for this task since they provide particle discrimination: the simultaneous detection of the thermal and the light signal produced by a particle interaction in scintillating crystals allows to identify the nature of particle, as the light yield depends thereon. We investigate the performance of two large CsI (undoped) crystals ($\sim$122 g each) operated as scintillating calorimeters at milli-Kelvin temperatures in terms of calorimetric properties and background rejection capabilities. Furthermore, we discuss the feasibility of this detection approach towards a background-free future dark matter experiment based on alkali halides crystals, with active particle discrimination via the two-channel detection.

Analysis Techniques for the Evaluation of the Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay Lifetime in $^{130}$Te with CUORE-0

We describe in detail the methods used to obtain the lower bound on the lifetime of neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay in $^{130}$Te and the associated limit on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino using the CUORE-0 detector. CUORE-0 is a bolometric detector array located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that was designed to validate the background reduction techniques developed for CUORE, a next-generation experiment scheduled to come online in 2016. CUORE-0 is also a competitive $0νββ$ decay search in its own right and functions as a platform to further develop the analysis tools and procedures to be used in CUORE. These include data collection, event selection and processing, as well as an evaluation of signal efficiency. In particular, we describe the amplitude evaluation, thermal gain stabilization, energy calibration methods, and the analysis event selection used to create our final $0νββ$ decay search spectrum. We define our high level analysis procedures, with emphasis on the new insights gained and challenges encountered. We outline in detail our fitting methods near the hypothesized $0νββ$ decay peak and catalog the main sources of systematic uncertainty. Finally, we derive the $0νββ$ decay half-life limits previously reported for CUORE-0, $T^{0ν}_{1/2}>2.7\times10^{24}$ yr, and in combination with the Cuoricino limit, $T^{0ν}_{1/2}>4.0\times10^{24}$ yr.

Cerenkov light identification with Si low-temperature detectors with Neganov-Luke effect-enhanced sensitivity

A new generation of cryogenic light detectors exploiting Neganov-Luke effect to enhance the thermal signal has been used to detect the Cherenkov light emitted by the electrons interacting in TeO$_{2}$ crystals. With this mechanism a high significance event-by-event discrimination between alpha and beta/gamma interactions at the $^{130}$Te neutrino-less double beta decay Q-value - (2527.515 $\pm$ 0.013) keV - has been demonstrated. This measurement opens the possibility of drastically reducing the background in cryogenic experiments based on TeO$_{2}$.

CUORE-0 detector: design, construction and operation

The CUORE experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te with an array of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometers arranged in 19 towers. CUORE-0, the first tower assembled according to the CUORE procedures, was built and commissioned at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, and took data from March 2013 to March 2015. In this paper we describe the design, construction and operation of the CUORE-0 experiment, with an emphasis on the improvements made over a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. In particular, we demonstrate with CUORE-0 data that the design goals of CUORE are within reach.

First array of enriched Zn$^{82}$Se bolometers to search for double beta decay

The R&D activity performed during the last years proved the potential of ZnSe scintillating bolometers to the search for neutrino-less double beta decay, motivating the realization of the first large-mass experiment based on this technology: CUPID-0. The isotopic enrichment in $^{82}$Se, the Zn$^{82}$Se crystals growth, as well as the light detectors production have been accomplished, and the experiment is now in construction at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). In this paper we present the results obtained testing the first three Zn$^{82}$Se crystals operated as scintillating bolometers, and we prove that their performance in terms of energy resolution, background rejection capability and intrinsic radio-purity complies with the requirements of CUPID-0.

First test of an enriched $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ scintillating bolometer for neutrinoless double-beta-decay searches

For the first time, a cadmium tungstate crystal scintillator enriched in $^{116}$Cd has been succesfully tested as a scintillating bolometer. The measurement was performed above ground at a temperature of 18 mK. The crystal mass was 34.5 g and the enrichment level ~82 %. Despite a substantial pile-up effect due to above-ground operation, the detector demonstrated a high energy resolution (2-7 keV FWHM in 0.2-2.6 MeV $γ$ energy range), a powerful particle identification capability and a high level of internal radiopurity. These results prove that cadmium tungstate is an extremely promising detector material for a next-generation neutrinoless double-beta decay bolometric experiment, like that proposed in the CUPID project (CUORE Upgrade with Particle IDentification).

LUMINEU: a search for neutrinoless double beta decay based on ZnMoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers

The LUMINEU is designed to investigate the possibility to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo by means of a large array of scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO$_4$ crystals enriched in $^{100}$Mo. High energy resolution and relatively fast detectors, which are able to measure both the light and the heat generated upon the interaction of a particle in a crystal, are very promising for the recognition and rejection of background events. We present the LUMINEU concepts and the experimental results achieved aboveground and underground with large-mass natural and enriched crystals. The measured energy resolution, the $α/β$ discrimination power and the radioactive internal contamination are all within the specifications for the projected final LUMINEU sensitivity. Simulations and preliminary results confirm that the LUMINEU technology can reach zero background in the region of interest (around 3 MeV) with exposures of the order of hundreds kg$\times$years, setting the bases for a next generation $0\nu2β$ decay experiment capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern.

The COSINUS project - perspectives of a NaI scintillating calorimeter for dark matter search

The R&D project COSINUS (Cryogenic Observatory for SIgnatures seen in Next-generation Underground Searches) aims to develop a cryogenic scintillating calorimeter using NaI as target crystal for direct darkmatter search. Dark matter particles interacting with the detector material generate both a phonon signal and scintillation light. While the phonon signal provides a precise determination of the deposited energy, the simultaneously measured scintillation light allows for a particle identification on an event-by-event basis, a powerful tool to study material-dependent interactions, and to suppress backgrounds. Using the same target material as the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration, the COSINUS technique may offer a unique possibility to investigate and contribute information to the presently controversial situation in the dark matter sector. We report on the dedicated design planned for the NaI proof-of-principle detector and the objectives of using this detection technique in the light of direct dark matter detection.

CUORE-0 results and prospects for the CUORE experiment

With 741 kg of TeO2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, the CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment aims at searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with unprecedented sensitivity. Expected to start data taking in 2015, CUORE is currently in an advanced construction phase at LNGS. CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6E26 y at 1 sigma (9.5E25 y at the 90% confidence level), in five years of live time, corresponding to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40-100 meV (50-130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary bolometric detectors could improve CUORE sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors towards a full analysis of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. CUORE-0 was built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment. It consists of a single CUORE tower (52 TeO2 bolometers of 750 g each, arranged in a 13 floor structure) constructed strictly following CUORE recipes both for materials and assembly procedures. An experiment its own, CUORE-0 is expected to reach a sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of 130Te around 3E24 y in one year of live time. We present an update of the data, corresponding to an exposure of 18.1 kg y. An analysis of the background indicates that the CUORE performance goal is satisfied while the sensitivity goal is within reach.

Double-beta decay investigation with highly pure enriched $^{82}$Se for the LUCIFER experiment

The LUCIFER project aims at deploying the first array of enriched scintillating bolometers for the investigation of neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{82}$Se. The matrix which embeds the source is an array of ZnSe crystals, where enriched $^{82}$Se is used as decay isotope. The radiopurity of the initial components employed for manufacturing crystals, that can be operated as bolometers, is crucial for achieving a null background level in the region of interest for double-beta decay investigations. In this work, we evaluated the radioactive content in 2.5 kg of 96.3\% enriched $^{82}$Se metal, measured with a high-purity germanium detector at the Gran Sasso deep underground laboratory. The limits on internal contaminations of primordial decay chain elements of $^{232}$Th, $^{238}$U and $^{235}$U are respectively: $<$61 $μ$Bq/kg, $< $110 $μ$Bq/kg and $<$74 $μ$Bq/kg at 90\% C.L.. The extremely low-background conditions in which the measurement was carried out and the high radiopurity of the $^{82}$Se allowed us to establish the most stringent lower limits on the half-lives of double-beta decay of $^{82}$Se to 0$^+_1$, 2$^+_2$ and 2$^+_1$ excited states of $^{82}$Kr of 3.4$\cdot$10$^{22}$ y, 1.3$\cdot$10$^{22}$ y and 1.0$\cdot$10$^{22}$ y, respectively, with a 90\% C.L..

HOLMES - The Electron Capture Decay of 163Ho to Measure the Electron Neutrino Mass with sub-eV sensitivity

The European Research Council has recently funded HOLMES, a new experiment to directly measure the neutrino mass. HOLMES will perform a calorimetric measurement of the energy released in the decay of 163Ho. The calorimetric measurement eliminates systematic uncertainties arising from the use of external beta sources, as in experiments with beta spectrometers. This measurement was proposed in 1982 by A. De Rujula and M. Lusignoli, but only recently the detector technological progress allowed to design a sensitive experiment. HOLMES will deploy a large array of low temperature microcalorimeters with implanted 163Ho nuclei. The resulting mass sensitivity will be as low as 0.4 eV. HOLMES will be an important step forward in the direct neutrino mass measurement with a calorimetric approach as an alternative to spectrometry. It will also establish the potential of this approach to extend the sensitivity down to 0.1 eV. We outline here the project with its technical challenges and perspectives.

Quantum numbers of the $X(3872)$ state and orbital angular momentum in its $ρ^0 Jψ$ decay

Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. The $X(3872)$ is found to decay predominantly through S wave and an upper limit of $4\%$ at $95\%$ C.L. is set on the fraction of D wave.

Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay of $^{130}$Te with CUORE-0

We report the results of a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in a 9.8~kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te using a bolometric detector array, CUORE-0. The characteristic detector energy resolution and background level in the region of interest are $5.1\pm 0.3{\rm~keV}$ FWHM and $0.058 \pm 0.004\,(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 0.002\,(\mathrm{syst.})$~counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr), respectively. The median 90%~C.L. lower-limit sensitivity of the experiment is $2.9\times 10^{24}~{\rm yr}$ and surpasses the sensitivity of previous searches. We find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te and place a Bayesian lower bound on the decay half-life, $T^{0ν}_{1/2}>$~$ 2.7\times 10^{24}~{\rm yr}$ at 90%~C.L. Combining CUORE-0 data with the 19.75~kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te from the Cuoricino experiment we obtain $T^{0ν}_{1/2} > 4.0\times 10^{24}~\mathrm{yr}$ at 90%~C.L.~(Bayesian), the most stringent limit to date on this half-life. Using a range of nuclear matrix element estimates we interpret this as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, $m_{ββ}< 270$ -- $760~\mathrm{meV}$.

In this paper we review the experimental techniques used in CUORE as well as its current status and anticipated physics reach.

A study of CP violation in $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \to D π^\pm$ decays with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} K^\pm π^\mp$ final states

A first study of CP violation in the decay modes $B^\pm\to [K^0_{\rm S} K^\pm π^\mp]_D h^\pm$ and $B^\pm\to [K^0_{\rm S} K^\mp π^\pm]_D h^\pm$, where $h$ labels a $K$ or $π$ meson and $D$ labels a $D^0$ or $\overline{D}^0$ meson, is performed. The analysis uses the LHCb data set collected in $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis is sensitive to the CP-violating CKM phase $γ$ through seven observables: one charge asymmetry in each of the four modes and three ratios of the charge-integrated yields. The results are consistent with measurements of $γ$ using other decay modes.

Aboveground test of an advanced Li$_2$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometer to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo

Large lithium molybdate (Li$_2$MoO$_4$) crystal boules were produced by using the low thermal gradient Czochralski growth technique from deeply purified molybdenum. A small sample from one of the boules was preliminary characterized in terms of X-ray-induced and thermally-excited luminescence. A large cylindrical crystalline element (with a size of $\oslash 40\times40$ mm) was used to fabricate a scintillating bolometer, which was operated aboveground at $\sim 15$ mK by using a pulse-tube cryostat housing a high-power dilution refrigerator. The excellent detector performance in terms of energy resolution and $α$ background suppression along with preliminary positive indications on the radiopurity of this material show the potentiality of Li$_2$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers for low-counting experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo.

Characterization of the Hamamatsu R11265-103-M64 multi-anode photomultiplier tube

The aim of this paper is to fully characterize the new multi-anode photomultiplier tube R11265-103-M64, produced by Hamamatsu. Its high effective active area (77%), its pixel size, the low dark signal rate and the capability to detect single photon signals make this tube suitable for an application in high energy physics, such as for RICH detectors. Four tubes and two different bias voltage dividers have been tested. The results of a standard characterization of the gain and the anode uniformity, the dark signal rate, the cross-talk and the device behaviour as a function of temperature have been studied. The behaviour of the tube is studied in a longitudinal magnetic field up to 100 Gauss. Shields made of a high permeability material are also investigated. The deterioration of the device performance due to long time operation at intense light exposure is studied. A quantitative analysis of the variation of the gain and the dark signals rate due to the aging is described.

Enriched Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers to search for $0 ν2β$ decay of $^{100}$Mo with the LUMINEU experiment

The LUMINEU project aims at performing a demonstrator underground experiment searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of the isotope $^{100}$Mo embedded in zinc molybdate (ZnMoO$_4$) scintillating bolometers. In this context, a zinc molybdate crystal boule enriched in $^{100}$Mo to 99.5\% with a mass of 171 g was grown for the first time by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. The production cycle provided a high yield (the crystal boule mass was 84\% of initial charge) and an acceptable level -- around 4\% -- of irrecoverable losses of the costy enriched material. Two crystals of 59 g and 63 g, obtained from the enriched boule, were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers. They showed a high detection performance, equivalent to that of previously developed natural ZnMoO$_4$ detectors. These results pave the way to future sensitive searches based on the LUMINEU technology, capable to approach and explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern.

Exploring the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in the Inverted Neutrino Hierarchy with Bolometric Detectors

Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric 0nubb decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0nubb experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (|mee|) of order 10-20 meV, thus completely exploring the so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. We highlight the main challenges and identify priorities for an R&D program addressing them.

First bolometric measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo with a ZnMoO$_4$ crystals array

The analysis of coincidences between the crystals allowed the assignment of constraints to the intensity of the different background sources, resulting in a reconstruction of the measured spectrum down to an energy of $\sim$300 keV. CUORE-0 is a cryogenic detector that uses an array of tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{130}Te. We present the first data analysis with 7.1 kg y of total TeO_2 exposure focusing on background measurements and energy resolution. The background rates in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest (2.47 to 2.57 MeV) and in the α background-dominated region (2.70 to 3.90 MeV) have been measured to be 0.071 \pm 0.011 and 0.019 \pm 0.002 counts/keV/kg/y, respectively. The latter result represents a factor of 6 improvement from a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. The results verify our understanding of the background sources in CUORE-0, which is the basis of extrapolations to the full CUORE detector. The obtained energy resolution (full width at half maximum) in the region of interest is 5.7 keV. Measurement of D0-D0bar mixing parameters and search for CP violation using D0->K+pi- decays

Measurements of charm mixing parameters from the decay-time-dependent ratio of D0->K+pi- to D0->K-pi+ rates and the charge-conjugate ratio are reported. The analysis uses data, corresponding to 3 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, from proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV center-of-mass energies recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the limit of charge-parity (CP) symmetry, the mixing parameters are determined to be x'^2=(5.5 +- 4.9)x10^{-5}, y'= (4.8 +- 1.0)x10^{-3}, and R_D=(3.568 +- 0.066)x10^{-3}. Allowing for CP violation, the mixing parameters are determined separately for D0 and D0bar mesons yielding A_D = (-0.7 +- 1.9)%, for the direct CP-violating asymmetry, and 0.75 < |q/p|< 1.24 at the 68.3% confidence level, where q and p are parameters that describe the mass eigenstates of the neutral charm mesons in terms of the flavor eigenstates. This is the most precise determination of these parameters from a single experiment and shows no evidence for CP violation.

Measurement of resonant and $CP$ components in $\overline{B}_s^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays

The resonant structure of the decay $\overline{B}_s^0\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ is studied using data corresponding to 3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $pp$ collisions by the LHC and collected by the LHCb detector. Five interfering $π^+π^-$ states are required to describe the decay: $f_0(980),f_0(1500),f_0(1790),f_2(1270)$, and $f_2^{\prime}(1525)$. An alternative model including these states and a non-resonant $J/ψπ^+π^-$ component also provides a good description of the data. Based on the different transversity components measured for the spin-2 intermediate states, the final state is found to be compatible with being entirely $CP$-odd. The $CP$-even part is found to be $<2.3$% at 95% confidence level. The $f_0(500)$ state is not observed, allowing a limit to be set on the absolute value of the mixing angle with the $f_0(980)$ of $<7.7^{\circ}$ at 90% confidence level, consistent with a tetraquark interpretation of the $f_0(980)$ substructure.

The $B_c^+$ mass is directly measured to be $6273.7 \pm 1.3\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 1.6 \,({\rm syst.})$ MeV/$c^2$, and the measured mass difference with respect to the $B^+$ meson is $M(B_c^+)-M(B^+) = 994.6 \pm 1.3\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.6\,({\rm syst.})$ MeV/$c^2$.

Measurements of indirect CP asymmetries in $D^0\to K^-K^+$ and $D^0\toπ^-π^+$ decays

A study of indirect CP violation in $D^0$ mesons through the determination of the parameter $A_Γ$ is presented using a data sample of $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector and recorded at the centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. The parameter $A_Γ$ is the asymmetry of the effective lifetimes measured in decays of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons to the CP eigenstates $K^-K^+$ and $π^-π^+$. Fits to the data sample yield $A_Γ(KK)=(-0.35\pm0.62\pm0.12)\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_Γ(ππ)=(0.33\pm1.06\pm0.14)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results represent the world's best measurements of these quantities. They show no difference in $A_Γ$ between the two final states and no indication of CP violation.

Measurements of the $B^+$, $B^0$, $B_s^0$ meson and $Λ_b^0$ baryon lifetimes

Measurements of $b$-hadron lifetimes are reported using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $7$Tev. Using the exclusive decays $B^+\to J/ψK^+$, $B^0\to J/ψK^*(892)^0$, $B^0\to J/ψK^0_{\rm S}$, $Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ the average decay times in these modes are measured to be $τ_{B^+\to J/ψK^+}$ = $1.637 \pm$ 0.004 $\pm$ 0.003 ps, $τ_{B^0\to J/ψK^*(892)^0}$ = $1.524 \pm$ 0.006 $\pm$ 0.004 ps, $τ_{B^0\to J/ψK^0_{\rm S}}$ = $1.499 \pm$ 0.013 $\pm$ 0.005 ps, $τ_{Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ}$ = $1.415 \pm$ 0.027 $\pm$ 0.006 ps and $τ_{B^0_s\to J/ψϕ}$ = $1.480 \pm$ 0.011 $\pm$ 0.005 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These represent the most precise lifetime measurements in these decay modes. In addition, ratios of these lifetimes, and the ratio of the decay-width difference, $ΔΓ_d$, to the average width, $Γ_d$, in the $B^0$ system, $ΔΓ_d/Γ_d = -0.044 \pm 0.025 \pm 0.011$, are reported. All quantities are found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations.

Decays of Bs and B0 mesons into J/ψπ+π-π+π- final states, produced in pp collisions at the LHC, are investigated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3/fb collected with the LHCb detector. B^0_(s) -> Jψf_1(1285) decays are seen for the first time, and the branching fractions are measured. Observation of photon polarization in the $b \to sγ$ transition

This Letter presents a study of the flavor-changing neutral current radiative $B^{\pm} \to K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{\pm}γ$ decays performed using data collected in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector at $7$ and $8\,$TeV center-of-mass energies. In this sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, nearly $14\,000$ signal events are reconstructed and selected, containing all possible intermediate resonances with a $K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ final state in the $[1.1, 1.9]\,$GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range. The distribution of the angle of the photon direction with respect to the plane defined by the final-state hadrons in their rest frame is studied in intervals of $K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ mass and the asymmetry between the number of signal events found on each side of the plane is obtained. The first direct observation of the photon polarization in the $b \to sγ$ transition is reported with a significance of $5.2\,σ$.

Precision luminosity measurements at LHCb

Measuring cross-sections at the LHC requires the luminosity to be determined accurately at each centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$. In this paper results are reported from the luminosity calibrations carried out at the LHC interaction point 8 with the LHCb detector for $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV (proton-proton collisions) and for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV (proton-lead collisions). Both the "van der Meer scan" and "beam-gas imaging" luminosity calibration methods were employed. It is observed that the beam density profile cannot always be described by a function that is factorizable in the two transverse coordinates. The introduction of a two-dimensional description of the beams improves significantly the consistency of the results. For proton-proton interactions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV a relative precision of the luminosity calibration of 1.47% is obtained using van der Meer scans and 1.43% using beam-gas imaging, resulting in a combined precision of 1.12%. Applying the calibration to the full data set determines the luminosity with a precision of 1.16%. This represents the most precise luminosity measurement achieved so far at a bunched-beam hadron collider.

Precision measurement of the ratio of the $Λ^0_b$ to $\overline{B}^0$ lifetimes

The LHCb measurement of the lifetime ratio of the $Λ^0_b$ to the $\overline{B}^0$ meson is updated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected using 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy $pp$ collisions at the LHC. The decay modes used are $\overline{B}^0\to J/ψp K^-$ and $\overline{B}^0\to J/ψπ^+ K^-$, where the $π^+K^-$ mass is consistent with that of the $\overline{K}^{*0}(892)$ meson. The lifetime ratio is determined with unprecedented precision to be $0.974\pm0.006\pm0.004$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with original theoretical predictions based on the heavy quark expansion. Using the current world average of the $\overline{B}^0$ lifetime, the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime is found to be $1.479 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.010$ ps.

Production, characterization and operation of $^{76}$Ge enriched BEGe detectors in GERDA

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (LNGS) searches for the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) of $^{76}$Ge. Germanium detectors made of material with an enriched $^{76}$Ge fraction act simultaneously as sources and detectors for this decay. During Phase I of the experiment mainly refurbished semi-coaxial Ge detectors from former experiments were used. For the upcoming Phase II, 30 new $^{76}$Ge enriched detectors of broad energy germanium (BEGe)-type were produced. A subgroup of these detectors has already been deployed in GERDA during Phase I. The present paper reviews the complete production chain of these BEGe detectors including isotopic enrichment, purification, crystal growth and diode production. The efforts in optimizing the mass yield and in minimizing the exposure of the $^{76}$Ge enriched germanium to cosmic radiation during processing are described. Furthermore, characterization measurements in vacuum cryostats of the first subgroup of seven BEGe detectors and their long-term behavior in liquid argon are discussed. The detector performance fulfills the requirements needed for the physics goals of GERDA Phase~II.

Neutrinos with masses in the range 250-5000 MeV and lifetimes from zero to 1000 ps are probed. In the absence of a signal, upper limits are set on the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(B^- \to π^+μ^-μ^-)$ as functions of neutrino mass and lifetime. Study of $J/ψ$ production and cold nuclear matter effects in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5 \mathrm{TeV}$

The production of $J/ψ$ mesons with rapidity $1.5<y<4.0$ or $-5.0<y<-2.5$ and transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}<14 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ is studied with the LHCb detector in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5 \mathrm{TeV}$. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about $1.6 \mathrm{nb}^{-1}$. For the first time the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production ratio are determined separately for prompt $J/ψ$ mesons and $J/ψ$ from $b$-hadron decays. Clear suppression of prompt $J/ψ$ production with respect to proton-proton collisions at large rapidity is observed, while the production of $J/ψ$ from $b$-hadron decays is less suppressed. These results show good agreement with available theoretical predictions. The measurement shows that cold nuclear matter effects are important for interpretations of the related quark-gluon plasma signatures in heavy-ion collisions.

TeO$_2$ bolometers with Cherenkov signal tagging: towards next-generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments

CUORE, an array of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometers, is about to be one of the most sensitive experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Its sensitivity could be further improved by removing the background from $α$ radioactivity. A few years ago it has been pointed out that the signal from $β$s can be tagged by detecting the emitted Cherenkov light, which is not produced by $α$s. In this paper we confirm this possibility. For the first time we measured the Cherenkov light emitted by a CUORE crystal, and found it to be 100 eV at the $Q$-value of the decay. To completely reject the $α$ background, we compute that one needs light detectors with baseline noise below 20 eV RMS, a value which is 3-4 times smaller than the average noise of the bolometric light detectors we are using. We point out that an improved light detector technology must be developed to obtain TeO$_2$ bolometric experiments able to probe the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses.

The background in the neutrinoless double beta decay experiment GERDA

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) of INFN is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge. The signature of the signal is a monoenergetic peak at 2039 keV, the Q-value of the decay, Q_bb. To avoid bias in the signal search, the present analysis does not consider all those events, that fall in a 40 keV wide region centered around Q_bb. The main parameters needed for the neutrinoless double beta decay analysis are described. A background model was developed to describe the observed energy spectrum. The model contains several contributions, that are expected on the basis of material screening or that are established by the observation of characteristic structures in the energy spectrum. The model predicts a flat energy spectrum for the blinding window around Q_bb with a background index ranging from 17.6 to 23.8*10^{-3} counts/(keV kg yr). A part of the data not considered before has been used to test if the predictions of the background model are consistent. The observed number of events in this energy region is consistent with the background model. The background at Q-bb is dominated by close sources, mainly due to 42K, 214Bi, 228Th, 60Co and alpha emitting isotopes from the 226Ra decay chain. The individual fractions depend on the assumed locations of the contaminants. It is shown, that after removal of the known gamma peaks, the energy spectrum can be fitted in an energy range of 200 kev around Q_bb with a constant background. This gives a background index consistent with the full model and uncertainties of the same size.

An amplitude analysis of the final state structure in the Bs->J/ψK+K- decay mode is performed using 1.0/fb of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collisions produced by the LHC. A modified Dalitz plot analysis of the final state is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. Resonant structures are observed in the K+K- mass spectrum as well as a significant non-resonant S-wave contribution. The largest resonant component is the ϕ(1020), accompanied by f0(980), f'2(1525), and four additional resonances. The overall branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs->J/ψK+K-)=(7.70 +/-0.08 +/- 0.39 +/- 0.60)x 10^(-4), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the ratio of the number of Bs to B- mesons produced. The mass and width of the f'2(1525) are measured to be 1522.2 +/- 2.8^{+5.3}_{-2.0} MeV and 84 +/- 6^{+10}_{-5} MeV, respectively. The final state fractions of the other resonant states are also reported.

Analysis of the resonant components in B0->J/ψpi+pi-

Interpretation of CP violation measurements using charmonium decays, in both the B0 and Bs systems, can be subject to changes due to "penguin" type diagrams. These effects can be investigated using measurements of the Cabibbo-suppressed B0->J/ψpi+pi- decays. The final state composition of this channel is investigated using a 1.0/fb sample of data produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC and collected by the LHCb experiment. A modified Dalitz plot analysis is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. An improved measurement of the B0->J/ψpi+pi- branching fraction of (3.97 +/-0.09+/- 0.11 +/- 0.16)x10^{-5} is reported where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty of the branching fraction of the decay B- -> J/ψK- used as a normalization channel. In the J/ψpi+pi- final state significant production of f0(500) and rho(770) resonances is found, both of which can be used for CP violation studies. In contrast evidence for the f0(980) resonance is not found, thus establishing the first upper limit on the branching fraction product B(B0->J/ψf0(980) x B(f0(980)-> pi+ pi-) < 1.1x10^{-6}, leading to an upper limit on the absolute value of the mixing angle of the f0(980)$ with the f0(500) of <31 degrees, both at 90% confidence level.

Characterization of bolometric Light Detectors for rare event searches

Bolometers have proven to be very good detectors to search for rare processes thanks to their excellent energy resolution and their low intrinsic background. Further active background rejection can be obtained by the simultaneous readout of the heat and light signals produced by particles interacting in scintillating bolometers, as proposed by the LUCIFER experiment. In this framework, the choice of the light detector and the optimization of its working conditions play a crucial role. In this paper, we report a study of the performances of a Germanium bolometric light detector in terms of signal amplitude, energy resolution and signal time development. The impact of various operational parameters on the detector performances is discussed.

A first flavour-tagged measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ decays is presented. In this decay channel, the CP-violating weak phase arises due to CP violation in the interference between $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing and the $b \to s \bar{s} s $ gluonic penguin decay amplitude. Using a sample of $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\; fb^{-1}$ and collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $7 \rm TeV$ with the LHCb detector, $880\ \B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ signal decays are obtained. The CP-violating phase is measured to be in the interval [-2.46, -0.76] \rm rad$ at 68% confidence level. The p-value of the Standard Model prediction is 16%.

First observation of B0->J/ψK+K- and search for B0->J/ψϕ decays

The first observation of the B0->J/ψK+K- decay is presented with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0/fb of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0->J/ψK+K-) = (2.53 +/- 0.31 +/- 0.19)x10^{-6}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. An amplitude analysis of the final state in the B0->J/ψK+K- decay is performed to separate resonant and nonresonant contributions in the K+K- spectrum. Evidence of the a0(980) resonance is reported with statistical significance of 3.9 standard deviations. The corresponding product branching fraction is measured to be B(B0->J/ψa0(980), a0(980)->K+K-)=(4.70 +/- 3.31 +/- 0.72)x10^{-7}, yielding an upper limit of B(B0->J/ψa0(980), a0(980)->K+K-)<9.0x10^{-7} at 90% confidence level. No evidence of the resonant decay B0->J/ψϕ\; is found, and an upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B(B0->J/ψϕ)< 1.9x10^{-7} at 90% confidence level.

Properties of the orbitally excited (L=1) $B_s$ states are studied using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ meson decaying to $B^{*+} K^-$ is reported, and the corresponding branching fraction measured relative to the $B^+ K^-$ decay mode. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV$, collected with the LHCb detector. A yield of $30 \pm 6$ $B_s^0 \rightarrow (K^+K^-)(K^-π^+)$ decays is found in the mass windows $1012.5 < M(K^+K^-) < 1026.5 MeV/c^2$ and $746 < M(K^-π^+)< 1046 MeV/c^2$. The signal yield is found to be dominated by $B_s^0 \rightarrow ϕ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays, and the corresponding branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow ϕ\bar{K}^{*0}) = (1.10 \pm 0.24 (stat) \pm 0.14 (syst) \pm 0.08 (f_d/f_s)) \times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the ratio of fragmentation fractions $f_d/f_s$ which accounts for the different production rate of $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. The significance of $B_s^0 \rightarrow ϕ\bar{K}^{*0}$ signal is 6.1 standard deviations. GeFRO: a New Charge Sensitive Amplifier Design with a Minimal Number of Front-end Components

A new approach was developed for the design of front-end circuits for semiconductor radiation detectors. The readout scheme consists of a first stage made of only a few components located close to the detector, and of a remote second stage located far from the detector, several meters away. The second stage amplifies the signals from the first stage and closes the feedback loop to discharge the input node after each event. The circuit has two outputs: one gives a "fast" signal, with a bandwidth larger than 20 MHz, allowing to preserve the high frequency components of the detector signals, which may be useful for timing measurements, pile-up rejection or pulse shape discrimination. The second output gives a "slow" signal, whose gain depends only on the value of the feedback capacitor, as happens with a classic charge sensitive amplifier, allowing to obtain higher resolution and lower drift. The prototype was named GeFRO for Germanium front-end, and was tested with a BEGe detector from Canberra. The wide bandwidth of the "fast" signal gave a timing resolution of the order of 20 ns. The noise of the circuit at the "slow" output after a 10 us Gaussian shaping was close to 160 electrons RMS with an input capacitance of 26 pF.

Implications of LHCb measurements and future prospects

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

Limits on neutral Higgs boson production in the forward region in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV

Limits on the cross-section times branching fraction for neutral Higgs bosons, produced in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV, and decaying to two tau leptons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, are presented. The result is based on a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector. Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 250 GeV, and is compared to the Standard Model expectation. An upper limit on $\tanβ$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model is set in the $m_{h^0}^\mathrm{max}$ scenario. It ranges from 34 for a CP-odd Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 70 for a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson mass of 140 GeV.

The production cross-sections of B mesons are measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using data collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to a integrated luminosity of 0.36 fb-1. The B+, B0 and Bs0 mesons are reconstructed in the exclusive decays B+ -> J/psi K+, B0 -> J/psi K*0 and Bs0 -> J/psi phi, with J/psi -> mu+ mu-, K*0 -> K+ pi- and phi -> K+ K-. The differential cross-sections are measured as functions of B meson transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, in the range 0 < pT < 40 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The integrated cross-sections in the same pT and y ranges, including charge-conjugate states, are measured to be sigma(pp -> B+ + X) = 38.9 +- 0.3 (stat.) +- 2.5 (syst.) +- 1.3 (norm.) mub, sigma(pp -> B0 + X) = 38.1 +- 0.6 (stat.) +- 3.7 (syst.) +- 4.7 (norm.) mub, sigma(pp -> Bs0 + X) = 10.5 +- 0.2 (stat.) +- 0.8 (syst.) +- 1.0 (norm.) mub, where the third uncertainty arises from the pre-existing branching fraction measurements.

The decay B0 -> D K*0 and the charge conjugate mode are studied using 1.0fb-1 of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at sqrt(s) = 7TeV in 2011. The CP asymmetry between the B0 -> D K*0 and the B0bar -> D K*0bar decay rates, with the neutral D meson in the CP-even final state K+K-, is found to be A_d_KK = -0.45 +- 0.23 +- 0.02, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, favoured B0 -> D K*0 decays are reconstructed with the D meson in the non-CP eigenstate K+ pi-. The ratio of the B-flavour averaged decay rates in D decays to CP and non-CP eigenstates is measured to be R_d_KK = 1.36 (+0.37) (-0.32) +- 0.07, where the ratio of the branching fractions of D0 -> K- pi+ to D0 -> K+ K- decays is included as multiplicative factor. The CP asymmetries measured with two control channels, the favoured B0 -> DK*0 decay with D -> K+ pi- and the Bs0bar -> D K*0 decay with D K+ K-, are also reported.

Measurement of CP violation and the B_s^0 meson decay width difference with B_s^0\to J/ψK^+ K^- and B_s^0\to J/ψπ^+π^- decays

The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using $pp$ collision data at \sqrt{s}=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1, collected with the LHCb detector. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase ϕ_s. In a sample of 27\,617 B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays, where the dominant contribution comes from B_s^0\to J/ψϕ decays, these parameters are measured to be ϕ_s = 0.07 \pm 0.09 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s \equiv (Γ_L+Γ_H)/2 = 0.663 \pm 0.005 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_L -Γ_H = 0.100 \pm 0.016 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst) & ps^-1, corresponding to the single most precise determination of ϕ_s, ΔΓ_s and Γ_s. The result of performing a combined analysis with B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^- decays gives ϕ_s = 0.01 \pm 0.07 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s = 0.661 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s = 0.106 \pm 0.011 (stat) \pm 0.007 (syst) & ps^-1. Production and detection asymmetries are removed using the B0 -> J/Psi K*0 decay as a control mode. The integrated CP asymmetry is found to be -0.072 +- 0.040 (stat.) +- 0.005 (syst.), consistent with the Standard Model.

Measurement of the cross-section for Z->e+e- production in pp collisions at sqrt{s}=7TeV

A measurement of the cross-section for pp->Z->e+e- is presented using data at sqrt{s}=7TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.94 fb^{-1}. The process is measured within the kinematic acceptance pT>20GeV/c and 2<η<4.5 for the daughter electrons and dielectron invariant mass in the range 60--120GeV/c^2. The cross-section is determined to be σ(pp->Z->e+e-)=76.0+-0.8+-2.0+-2.6pb where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is the uncertainty in the luminosity. The measurement is performed as a function of Z rapidity and as a function of an angular variable which is closely related to the Z transverse momentum. The results are compared with previous LHCb measurements and with theoretical predictions from QCD.

Measurement of the differential branching fraction of the decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$

The differential branching fraction of the decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ is measured as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass, $q^2$. A yield of $78\pm12$ $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$ decays is observed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0\,fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 7\,TeV. A significant signal is found in the $q^2$ region above the square of the $J/ψ$ mass, while at lower-$q^2$ values upper limits are set on the differential branching fraction. Integrating the differential branching fraction over $q^2$, while excluding the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ regions, gives a branching fraction of $\BF($Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛμ^+μ^-$)=(0.96\pm 0.16\stat\pm 0.13\syst\pm 0.21 (\mathrm{norm}))\times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the normalisation mode, $$Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/psiΛ$, respectively.

Measurement of the fraction of \Y1S originating from \chib1P decays in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7\tev$

The production of \chib1P mesons in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $7\tev$ is studied using $32\invpb$ of data collected with the \lhcb detector. The $\chib1P$ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode $\chib1P \to \Y1S\g \to \mumu\g$. The fraction of \Y1S originating from \chib1P decays in the \Y1S transverse momentum range $6 < \pt^{\Y1S} < 15\gevc$ and rapidity range $2.0 < y^{\Y1S} < 4.5$ is measured to be $(20.7\pm 5.7\pm 2.1^{+2.7}_{-5.4})%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last gives the range of the result due to the unknown \Y1S and \chib1P polarizations.

Measurement of the fragmentation fraction ratio $f_{s}/f_{d}$ and its dependence on $B$ meson kinematics

The relative production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons is determined with the hadronic decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$. The measurement uses data corresponding to 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV recorded in the forward region with the LHCb experiment. The ratio of production rates, $f_{s}/f_{d}$, is measured to be $0.238 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.021 $, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third theoretical. This is combined with a previous LHCb measurement to obtain $f_{s}/f_{d} = 0.256 \pm 0.020$. The dependence of $f_{s}/f_{d}$ on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $B$ meson is determined using the decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$. There is evidence for a decrease with increasing transverse momentum, whereas the ratio remains constant as a function of pseudorapidity. In addition, the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$ is measured to be $0.0822 \pm 0.0011 (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.0025 (\textrm{syst})$.

Performances of a large mass ZnSe bolometer to search for rare events

Scintillating bolometers of ZnSe are the baseline choice of the LUCIFER experiment, whose aim is to observe the neutrinoless double beta decay of 82Se. The independent read-out of the heat and scintillation signals allows to identify and reject alpha particle interactions, the dominant background source for bolometric detectors. In this paper we report the performances of a ZnSe crystal operated within the LUCIFER R&D. We measured the scintillation yield, the energy resolution and the background in the energy region where the signal from neutrinoless double beta decay of 82Se is expected with an exposure of 9.4 kg x days. With a newly developed analysis algorithm we improved the rejection of alpha events, and we estimated the increase in energy resolution obtained by the combination of the heat and light signals. For the first time we measured the light emitted by nuclear recoils, and found it to be compatible with zero. We conclude that the discrimination of nuclear recoils from beta/gamma interactions in the WIMPs energy region is possible, but low-noise light detectors are needed.

Pulse shape discrimination for GERDA Phase I data

The GERDA experiment located at the LNGS searches for neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay of ^{76}Ge using germanium diodes as source and detector. In Phase I of the experiment eight semi-coaxial and five BEGe type detectors have been deployed. The latter type is used in this field of research for the first time. All detectors are made from material with enriched ^{76}Ge fraction. The experimental sensitivity can be improved by analyzing the pulse shape of the detector signals with the aim to reject background events. This paper documents the algorithms developed before the data of Phase I were unblinded. The double escape peak (DEP) and Compton edge events of 2.615 MeV γ rays from ^{208}Tl decays as well as 2νββ decays of ^{76}Ge are used as proxies for 0νββ decay. For BEGe detectors the chosen selection is based on a single pulse shape parameter. It accepts 0.92$\pm$0.02 of signal-like events while about 80% of the background events at Q_{ββ}=2039 keV are rejected. For semi-coaxial detectors three analyses are developed. The one based on an artificial neural network is used for the search of 0νββ decay. It retains 90% of DEP events and rejects about half of the events around Q_{ββ}. The 2νββ events have an efficiency of 0.85\pm0.02 and the one for 0νββ decays is estimated to be 0.90^{+0.05}_{-0.09}. A second analysis uses a likelihood approach trained on Compton edge events. The third approach uses two pulse shape parameters. The latter two methods confirm the classification of the neural network since about 90% of the data events rejected by the neural network are also removed by both of them. In general, the selection efficiency extracted from DEP events agrees well with those determined from Compton edge events or from 2νββ decays.

Growth of high quality radiopure crystals is a complex task, since there are no commercially available molybdenum compounds with the required levels of purity and radioactive contamination. This paper discusses approaches to purify molybdenum and synthesize compound for high quality radiopure ZnMoO4 crystal growth. A combination of a double sublimation (with addition of zinc molybdate) with subsequent recrystallization in aqueous solutions (using zinc molybdate as a collector) was used. Zinc molybdate crystals up to 1.5 kg were grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique, their optical, luminescent, diamagnetic, thermal and bolometric properties were tested.

Data considered in the present analysis have been collected between November 2011 and May 2013 with a total exposure of 21.6 kgyr. A blind analysis is performed. The background index is about 1.10^{-2} cts/(keV kg yr) after pulse shape discrimination. No signal is observed and a lower limit is derived for the half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge, T_1/2 > 2.1 10^{25} yr (90% C.L.). The combination with the results from the previous experiments with 76Ge yields T_1/2 > 3.0 10^{25} yr (90% C.L.).

Search for 14.4 keV solar axions from M1 transition of Fe-57 with CUORE crystals

We report the results of a search for axions from the 14.4 keV M1 transition from Fe-57 in the core of the sun using the axio-electric effect in TeO2 bolometers. The detectors are 5x5x5 cm3 crystals operated at about 10 mK in a facility used to test bolometers for the CUORE experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 43.65 kg d of data was made using a newly developed low energy trigger which was optimized to reduce the detectors energy threshold. An upper limit of 0.63 c kg-1 d-1 was established at 95% C.L.. From this value, a lower bound at 95% C.L. was placed on the Peccei-Quinn energy scale of fa >= 0.76 10**6 GeV for a value of S=0.55 for the flavor-singlet axial vector matrix element. Bounds are given for the interval 0.15 < S < 0.55.

Search for CP violation in D+ -> phi pi+ and Ds+ -> Ks pi+ decays

A search for CP violation in D+ -> phi pi+ decays is performed using data collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1} at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV. The CP-violating asymmetry is measured to be (-0.04+/-0.14+/-0.14)% for candidates with K-K+ mass within 20 MeV/c^{2} of the phi meson mass. A search for a CP-violating asymmetry that varies across the phi mass region of the D+ -> K-K+pi+ Dalitz plot is also performed, and no evidence for CP violation is found. In addition, the CP asymmetry in the Ds+ -> Ks pi+ decay is measured to be (0.61+/-0.83+/-0.14)%.

Search for direct CP violation in D0 -> h- h+ modes using semileptonic B decays

A search for direct CP violation in D0 -> h- h+ (where h=K or pi) is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^-1 collected in 2011 by LHCb in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The analysis uses D0 mesons produced in inclusive semileptonic b-hadron decays to the D0 mu X final state, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to tag the flavour of the D0 meson. The difference in the CP-violating asymmetries between the two decay channels is measured to be Delta A_CP = A_CP(K-K+) - A_CP(pi-pi+) = (0.49 +- 0.30 (stat) +- 0.14 (syst)) % . This result does not confirm the evidence for direct CP violation in the charm sector reported in other analyses.

Search for rare $B^0_{(s)}\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-$ decays

\noindent A search for the decays $B^0_{s}\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-$ and $B^0 \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-$ is performed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0\ensuremath{\{\,fb}^{-1}}\xspace, collected with the LHCb detector in 2011. The number of candidates observed is consistent with the expected background and, assuming phase-space models of the decays, limits on the branching fractions are set: \{${\ensuremath{\cal B}\xspace}(B^0_{s}\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-) < 1.6 \ (1.2) \times 10^{-8}$} and \{${\ensuremath{\cal B}\xspace}(B^0 \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-)< 6.6 \ (5.3) \times 10^{-9}$} at 95\,% (90\,%) confidence level. In addition, limits are set in the context of a supersymmetric model which allows for the $B^0_{(s)}$ meson to decay into a scalar ($S$) and pseudoscalar particle ($P$), where $S$ and $P$ have masses of 2.5 GeV and 214.3 MeV, respectively, both resonances decay into $μ^+μ^-$. Search for the decay Bs -> D*-+ π+-

A search for the decay Bs -> D*-+ π+- is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of pp collisions collected by LHCb. This decay is expected to be mediated by a W-exchange diagram, with little contribution from rescattering processes, and therefore a measurement of the branching fraction will help to understand the mechanism behind related decays such as Bs -> π+ π- and Bs -> D Dbar. Systematic uncertainties are minimised by using B0 -> D*-+ π+- as a normalisation channel. We find no evidence for a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of BR(Bs -> D*-+ π+-) < 6.1 (7.8) x10^(-6) at 90% (95%) confidence level.

The observed number of $B^0_s \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ and $B^0 \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}$ candidates is consistent with background expectations. Sensitivity and Discovery Potential of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay

We present a study of the sensitivity and discovery potential of CUORE, a bolometric double-beta decay experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Two approaches to the computation of experimental sensitivity for various background scenarios are presented, and an extension of the sensitivity formulation to the discovery potential case is also discussed. Assuming a background rate of 10^-2 cts/(keV kg y), we find that, after 5 years of live time, CUORE has a 1 sigma sensitivity to the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of T_1/2(1 sigma) = 1.6 \times 10^26 y and thus a potential to probe the effective Majorana neutrino mass down to 40-100 meV; the sensitivity at 1.64 sigma, which corresponds to 90% C.L., will be T_1/2(1.64 sigma) = 9.5 \times 10^25 y. This range is compared with the claim of observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge and the preferred range of the neutrino mass parameter space from oscillation results.

Study of forward Z+jet production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV

A measurement of the $Z(\rightarrowμ^+μ^-)$+jet production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV is presented. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. Results are shown with two jet transverse momentum thresholds, 10 and 20 GeV, for both the overall cross-section within the fiducial volume, and for six differential cross-section measurements. The fiducial volume requires that both the jet and the muons from the Z boson decay are produced in the forward direction ($2.0<η<4.5$). The results show good agreement with theoretical predictions at the second-order expansion in the coupling of the strong interaction.

SuperB Technical Design Report

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the SuperB detector that was to be installed on the SuperB e+e- high luminosity collider. The SuperB asymmetric collider, which was to be constructed on the Tor Vergata campus near the INFN Frascati National Laboratory, was designed to operate both at the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass energy with a luminosity of 10^{36} cm^{-2}s^{-1} and at the tau/charm production threshold with a luminosity of 10^{35} cm^{-2}s^{-1}. This high luminosity, producing a data sample about a factor 100 larger than present B Factories, would allow investigation of new physics effects in rare decays, CP Violation and Lepton Flavour Violation. This document details the detector design presented in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2007. The R&D and engineering studies performed to arrive at the full detector design are described, and an updated cost estimate is presented. A combination of a more realistic cost estimates and the unavailability of funds due of the global economic climate led to a formal cancelation of the project on Nov 27, 2012.

The low energy spectrum of TeO2 bolometers: results and dark matter perspectives for the CUORE-0 and CUORE experiments

We collected 19.4 days of data from four 750 g TeO2 bolometers, and in three of them we were able to set the energy threshold around 3 keV using a new analysis technique. We found a background rate ranging from 25 cpd/keV/kg at 3 keV to 2 cpd/keV/kg at 25 keV, and a peak at 4.7 keV. The origin of this peak is presently unknown, but its presence is confirmed by a reanalysis of 62.7 kg.days of data from the finished CUORICINO experiment. Finally, we report the expected sensitivities of the CUORE0 (52 bolometers) and CUORE (988 bolometers) experiments to a WIMP annual modulation signal.

A model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} h^+h^-$ ($h=π, K$) decays and constraints on the CKM angle $γ$

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ decays, with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} π^+π^-$ and $D \to K^0_{\rm S} K^+ K^-$, is performed to measure the CP-violating observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$ which are sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$. The analysis exploits 1.0 $\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment. The study makes no model-based assumption on the variation of the strong phase of the D decay amplitude over the Dalitz plot, but uses measurements of this quantity from CLEO-c as input. The values of the parameters are found to be $x_- = (0.0 \pm 4.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-2}$, $y_- = (2.7 \pm 5.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-2}$, $x_+ = (-10.3 \pm 4.5 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.4)\times 10^{-2}$ and $y_+ = (-0.9 \pm 3.7 \pm 0.8 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-2}$. The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and the error associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured at CLEO-c, respectively. These results correspond to $γ= (44^{\,+43}_{\,-38})^\circ$, with a second solution at $γ\to γ+ 180^\circ$, and $r_B = 0.07 \pm 0.04$, where $r_B$ is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B decay amplitudes.

A study of the $Z$ production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV using tau final states

A measurement of the inclusive $Z \to ττ$ cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV is presented based on a dataset of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector. Candidates for $Z \to ττ$ decays are identified through reconstructed final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. The production cross-section for $Z$ bosons, with invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV/$c^2$, which decay to $τ$ leptons with transverse momenta greater than 20 GeV/$c$ and pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, is measured to be $σ_{pp \to Z \to ττ} = 71.4 \pm 3.5 \pm 2.8 \pm 2.5$ pb; the first uncertainty is statistical, the second uncertainty is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The ratio of the cross-sections for $Z \to ττ$ to $Z \to μμ$ is determined to be $0.93 \pm 0.09$, where the uncertainty is the combination of statistical, systematic, and luminosity uncertainties of the two measurements.

Absolute luminosity measurements with the LHCb detector at the LHC

Absolute luminosity measurements are of general interest for colliding-beam experiments at storage rings. These measurements are necessary to determine the absolute cross-sections of reaction processes and are valuable to quantify the performance of the accelerator. Using data taken in 2010, LHCb has applied two methods to determine the absolute scale of its luminosity measurements for proton-proton collisions at the LHC with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. In addition to the classic "van der Meer scan" method a novel technique has been developed which makes use of direct imaging of the individual beams using beam-gas and beam-beam interactions. This beam imaging method is made possible by the high resolution of the LHCb vertex detector and the close proximity of the detector to the beams, and allows beam parameters such as positions, angles and widths to be determined. The results of the two methods have comparable precision and are in good agreement. Combining the two methods, an overall precision of 3.5% in the absolute luminosity determination is reached. The techniques used to transport the absolute luminosity calibration to the full 2010 data-taking period are presented.

Analysis of the resonant components in Bs->J/ψπ+π-

Determination of the sign of the decay width difference in the B_s system

The interference between the K+K- S-wave and P-wave amplitudes in B_s -> J/psi K+K- decays with the K+K- pairs in the region around the phi(1020) resonance is used to determine the variation of the difference of the strong phase between these amplitudes as a function of K+K- invariant mass. Combined with the results from our CP asymmetry measurements in B_s -> J/psi phi decays, we conclude that the B_s mass eigenstate that is almost CP =+1 is lighter and decays faster than the mass eigenstate that is almost CP =-1. This determines the sign of the decay width difference DeltaGamma_s == Gamma_L -Gamma_H to be positive. Our result also resolves the ambiguity in the past measurements of the CP violating phase phi_s to be close to zero rather than pi. These conclusions are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

The angular distribution is measured in bins of dimuon invariant mass squared and found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations. Integrating the differential branching fraction over the full dimuon invariant mass range yields a total branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}) = (4.36 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.18)\times 10^{-7}$. The angular distributions and the partial branching fraction of the decay $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ are studied using an integrated luminosity of $0.37\,fb^{-1}$ of data collected with the LHCb detector. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, $A_{\mathrm{FB}}$, the fraction of longitudinal polarisation, $F_{\mathrm{L}}$, and the partial branching fraction, $\mathrm{d}{\mathcal B}/\mathrm{d}q^{2}$, are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. Effect of SiO2 coating in bolometric Ge light detectors for rare event searches

In germanium-based light detectors for scintillating bolometers, a SiO$_2$ anti-reflective coating is often applied on the side of the germanium wafer exposed to light with the aim to improve its light collection efficiency. In this paper, we report about a measurement, performed in the temperature range 25-35 mK, of the light-collection increase obtained thanks to this method, which resulted to be of the order of 20%. The procedure followed has been carefully selected in order to minimize systematic effects. The employed light sources have the same spectral features (peaking at $\sim 630$ nm wavelength) that will characterise future neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the isotope $^{82}$Se and based on ZnSe crystals, such as LUCIFER. The coupling between source and light detector reproduces the configuration used in scintillating bolometers. The present measurement clarifies the role of SiO$_2$ coating and describes a method and a set-up that can be extended to the study of other types of coatings and luminescent materials.

The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the $\mathrm{B}^0\to J/ψρ^0$ decay: $$\frac{Br(B^0\to J/ψω)}{Br(B^0\to J/ψρ^0)} = 0.89 \pm0.19(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.13}(syst)$$ $$\frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/ψη)}{Br(B^0\to J/ψρ^0)} = 14.0 \pm 1.2(stat)^{+1.1}_{-1.5}(syst)^{+1.1}_{-1.0}(\frac{f_d}{f_s}),$$ $$\frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/ψη^{\prime})}{Br(B^0\to J/ψρ^0)} = 12.7\pm1.1(stat)^{+0.5}_{-1.3}(syst)^{+1.0}_{-0.9}(\frac{f_d}{f_s}),$$ where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of $f_d/f_s$, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of $B^0$ and $B^0_s$ mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of $B^0_s\to J/ψη^{\prime}$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψη$ decays is measured to be $$ \frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/ψη^{\prime})}{Br(B^0_s\to J/ψη)} = 0.90\pm0.09(stat)^{+0.06}_{-0.02}(syst).$$

First evidence for the decay Bs -> mu+ mu-

A search for the rare decays Bs->mu+mu- and B0->mu+mu- is performed using data collected in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The data samples comprise 1.1 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV and 1.0 fb^-1 at sqrt{s}=7 TeV. We observe an excess of Bs -> mu+ mu- candidates with respect to the background expectation. The probability that the background could produce such an excess or larger is 5.3 x 10^-4 corresponding to a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations. A maximum-likelihood fit gives a branching fraction of BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) = (3.2^{+1.5}_{-1.2}) x 10^-9, where the statistical uncertainty is 95% of the total uncertainty. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. The observed number of B0 -> mu+ mu- candidates is consistent with the background expectation, giving an upper limit of BR(B0 -> mu+ mu-) < 9.4 x 10^-10 at 95% confidence level.

The branching fractions, normalized with respect to $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-$, respectively, are measured to be {\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-)\over\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-)} &= (5.2\pm0.5\pm0.3)\times10^{-2}, {\br(\bar{B}^0\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-)\over\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-^π^+π^-)} &= 0.54\pm0.07\pm0.07, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. First observations of the Cabibbo suppressed decays B0bar -->D+ K- pi+ pi- and B- --> D0 K- pi+ pi- are reported using 35 pb^{-1} of data collected with the LHCb detector. Their branching fractions are measured with respect to the corresponding Cabibbo favored decays, from which we obtain B(B0bar --> D+ K- pi+ pi-)/B(B0bar --> D+ pi- pi+ pi-)=(5.9\pm1.1\pm0.5) x 10^{-2} and B(B- --> D0 K- pi+ pi-)/B(B- --> D0 pi- pi+ pi-)=(9.4\pm1.3\pm0.9) x 10^{-2}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Inclusive $W$ and $Z$ production in the forward region at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV

Measurements of inclusive $W$ and $Z$ boson production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV using final states containing muons are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $W$ and $Z$ bosons are reconstructed from muons with a transverse momentum above 20 GeV$/c$ and pseudorapidity between 2.0 and 4.5, and, in the case of the $Z$ cross-section, a dimuon invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV$/c^2$. The cross-sections are measured to be {$831\pm9\pm27\pm 29$ pb} for $W^+$, {$656\pm8\pm19\pm 23$ pb} for $W^-$ and {$76.7\pm1.7\pm3.3\pm2.7$ pb} for $Z$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the luminosity. Differential cross-sections, $W$ and $Z$ cross-section ratios and the lepton charge asymmetry are also measured in the same kinematic region. The ratios are determined to be $σ_{W^+\rightarrowμ^+ν} / σ_{W^-\rightarrowμ^-\barν}= ${$1.27\pm0.02\pm0.01$}, and $σ_{W^+\rightarrowμ^+ν} + σ_{W^-\rightarrowμ^-\barν})/σ_{Z\rightarrowμμ}= ${$19.4\pm0.5\pm0.9$}. The results are in general agreement with theoretical predictions, performed at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recently calculated parton distribution functions.

Measurement of b hadron production fractions in 7 TeV pp collisions

Measurements of $b$ hadron production ratios in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3 pb$^{-1}$ are presented. We study the ratios of strange $B$ meson to light $B$ meson production $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ and $Λ_b^0$ baryon to light $B$ meson production $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)$ as a function of the charmed hadron-muon pair transverse momentum $p_T$ and the $b$ hadron pseudorapidity $η$, for $p_T$ between 0 and 14 GeV and $η$ between 2 and 5. We find that $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ is consistent with being independent of $p_{\rm T}$ and $η$, and we determine $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ = 0.134$\pm$ 0.004 $^{+0.011}_{-0.010}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The corresponding ratio $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)$ is found to be dependent upon the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron-muon pair, $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)=(0.404\pm 0.017 (stat) \pm 0.027 (syst) \pm 0.105 (Br))\times[1 -(0.031 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst))\times p_T(GeV)]$, where Br reflects an absolute scale uncertainty due to the poorly known branching fraction Br(Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+)$. We extract the ratio of strange $B$ meson to light neutral $B$ meson production $f_s/f_d$ by averaging the result reported here with two previous measurements derived from the relative abundances of $\bar{B}_s \to D_S^+ π^-$ to $\bar{B}^0 \to D^+K^-$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^+π^-$. We obtain $f_s/f_d=0.267^{+0.021}_{-0.020}$.

Measurement of the cross-section ratio $σ(χ_{c2})/σ(χ_{c1})$ for prompt $χ_c$ production at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

The prompt production of the charmonium $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons has been studied in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The $χ_c$ mesons are identified through their decays $χ_c\to J/ψ\,γ$ with $J/ψ\to μ^+ μ^-$ using 36 $\mathrm{pb^{-1}}$ of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for the two $χ_c$ spin states, $σ(χ_{c2})/σ(χ_{c1})$, has been determined as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/ψ}$, in the range from 2 to 15 GeV/$c$. Measurement of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime

A precise determination of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime can be used to constrain contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model in the $B_s^0$ meson system. Conventional approaches select $B$ meson decay products that are significantly displaced from the $B$ meson production vertex. As a consequence, $B$ mesons with low decay times are suppressed, introducing a bias to the decay time spectrum which must be corrected. This analysis uses a technique that explicitly avoids a lifetime bias by using a neural network based trigger and event selection. Using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the LHCb experiment, the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime is measured as $1.455 \pm 0.046 \; \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.006 \; \mathrm{(syst.)} \, \mathrm{ps}.$

The $B \to Kμ^+μ^-$ isospin asymmetry integrated over $q^2$ is negative, deviating from zero with over 4 $σ$ significance. The prompt production of charmonium $χ_{c}$ and $J/ψ$ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The $χ_{c}$ and $J/ψ$ mesons are identified through their decays $χ_{c}\rightarrow J/ψγ$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+μ^-$ using 36 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for $χ_{c}$ and $J/ψ$, $σ(χ_{c}\rightarrow J/ψγ)/ σ(J/ψ)$, is determined as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum in the range $2 < p_{\mathrm T}^{J/ψ} < 15$ GeV/$c$. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low $p_{\mathrm T}^{J/ψ}$ region.

Measurement of Upsilon production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

The production of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb-1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The Upsilon mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Upsilon -> mu+ mu- and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the mu+ mu- invariant mass distributions. The differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the Upsilon transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, over the range pT < 15 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The cross-sections times branching fractions, integrated over these kinematic ranges, are measured to be sigma(pp -> Upsilon(1S) X) x B(Upsilon(1S)->mu+ mu-) = 2.29 {\pm} 0.01 {\pm} 0.10 -0.37 +0.19 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(2S) X) x B(Upsilon(2S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.562 {\pm} 0.007 {\pm} 0.023 -0.092 +0.048 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(3S) X) x B(Upsilon(3S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.283 {\pm} 0.005 {\pm} 0.012 -0.048 +0.025 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the unknown polarisation of the three Upsilon states.

Measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays

A study of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays is performed with data corresponding to 0.37 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. Measurements of the branching fractions of the decays $B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm} $ and $B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}$

The decay mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm} $ allows for one of the theoretically cleanest measurements of the CKM angle $γ$ through the study of time-dependent $\ensuremath{CP}\xspace$ violation. This paper reports a measurement of its branching fraction relative to the Cabibbo-favoured mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}$ based on a data sample of 0.37 fb$^{-1}$ proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV collected in 2011 with the LHCb detector. In addition, the ratio of $\ensuremath{\mathrm{B}}\xspace$ meson production fractions $\ensuremath{f_s/f_d}$, determined from semileptonic decays, together with the known branching fraction of the control channel $B^{0} \to D^{-} π^{+}$, is used to perform an absolute measurement of the branching fractions: $B (\B^0_s \to D^-_s π^+) \;= (2.95 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.17^{\,+\,0.18}_{\,-\,0.22}) \times 10^{-3}$, $B (\B^0_s \to D^\mp_s K^\pm) = (1.90 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13^{\,+\,0.12}_{\,-\,0.14}) \times 10^{-4}\,$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third the uncertainty due to $f_s/f_d$.

New experimental limits on the alpha decays of lead isotopes

For the first time a PbWO4 crystal was grown using ancient Roman lead and it was run as a cryogenic detector. Thanks to the simultaneous and independent read-out of heat and scintillation light, the detector was able to discriminate beta/gamma interactions with respect to alpha particles down to low energies. New more stringent limits on the alpha decays of the lead isotopes are presented. In particular a limit of T_{1/2} > 1.4*10^20 y at a 90% C.L. was evaluated for the alpha decay of 204Pb to 200Hg.

ZnMoO4: a promising bolometer for neutrinoless double beta decay searches

We investigate the performances of two ZnMoO4 scintillating crystals operated as bolometers, in view of a next generation experiment to search the neutrinoless double beta decay of Mo-100. We present the results of the alpha vs beta/gamma discrimination, obtained through the scintillation light as well as through the study of the shape of the thermal signal alone. The discrimination capability obtained at the 2615 keV line of Tl-208 is 8 sigma, using the heat-light scatter plot, while it exceeds 20 sigma using the shape of the thermal pulse alone. The achieved FWHM energy resolution ranges from 2.4 keV (at 238 keV) to 5.7 keV (at 2615 keV). The internal radioactive contaminations of the ZnMoO4 crystals were evaluated through a 407 hours background measurement. The obtained limit is < 32 microBq/kg for Th-228 and Ra-226. These values were used for a Monte Carlo simulation aimed at evaluating the achievable background level of a possible, future array of enriched ZnMoO4 crystals.

A new approach to the front-end readout of cryogenic ionization detectors

We present a novel approach to the readout of ionization detectors. The solution allows to minimize the number of components and the space occupation close to the detector. This way a minimal impact is added on the radioactive background in those experiments where very low signal rates are expected, such as GERDA and MAJORANA. The circuit consists in a JFET transistor and a remote second stage. The DC feedback path is closed using a diode. Two signal cables are only necessary for biasing and readout.

A novel technique of particle identification with bolometric detectors

We report in this paper the proofs that the pulse shape analysis can be used in some bolometers to identify the nature of the interacting particle. Indeed, while detailed analyses of the signal time development in purely thermal detectors have not produced so far interesting results, similar analyses on bolometers built with scintillating crystals seem to show that it is possible to distinguish between an electron or gamma-ray and an alpha particle interaction. This information can be used to eliminate background events from the recorded data in many rare process studies, especially Neutrinoless Double Beta decay search. Results of pulse shape analysis of signals from a number of bolometers with absorbers of different composition (CaMoO4, ZnMoO4, MgMoO4 and ZnSe) are presented and the pulse shape discrimination capability of such detectors is discussed.

The ratio of fragmentation fractions \fsfdt is determined through the relative abundance of $B_s \to D_s^- π^+$ to $B_d \to D^- K^+$ and $B_d \to D^-π^+$, leading to $f_s/f_d = 0.253 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.020$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and theoretical respectively.

Discrimination of alpha and beta/gamma interactions in a TeO$_2$ bolometer

TeO$_2$ crystals have proven to be superb bolometers for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay in many respects. However, if used alone, they do not exhibit any feature that allows to discriminate an alpha energy deposit from a beta/gamma one. This fact limits their ability to reject the background due to natural radioactivity and eventually affects the sensitivity of the search. In this paper we show the results of a TeO$_2$ crystal where, in coincidence with its bolometric heat signal, also the luminescence light escaping the crystal is recorded. The results show that we are able to measure the light produced by beta/gamma particles, which can be explained as due to Cerenkov emission. No light is detected from alpha particles, allowing the rejection of this background source.

Measurement of $V^0$ production ratios in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ and 7\,TeV

The $\barΛ / Λ$ and $\barΛ / K^0_\mathrm{S}$ production ratios are measured by the LHCb detector from $0.3\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$\,TeV and $1.8\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$\,TeV. Results at the two energies are in good agreement as a function of rapidity loss, $Δy = y_\mathrm{beam} - y$, and are consistent with previous measurements. The ratio $\barΛ / Λ$, measuring the transport of baryon number from the collision into the detector, is smaller in data than predicted in simulation, particularly at high rapidity. Measurement of charged particle multiplicities in $pp$ collisions at ${\sqrt{s} =7}$TeV in the forward region

The charged particle production in proton-proton collisions is studied with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of ${\sqrt{s} =7}$TeV in different intervals of pseudorapidity $η$. The charged particles are reconstructed close to the interaction region in the vertex detector, which provides high reconstruction efficiency in the $η$ ranges $-2.5<η<-2.0$ and $2.0<η<4.5$. The data were taken with a minimum bias trigger, only requiring one or more reconstructed tracks in the vertex detector. By selecting an event sample with at least one track with a transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c a hard QCD subsample is investigated. Several event generators are compared with the data; none are able to describe fully the multiplicity distributions or the charged particle density distribution as a function of $η$. In general, the models underestimate the charged particle production.

Performance of a large TeO2 crystal as a cryogenic bolometer in searching for neutrinoless double beta decay

Bolometers are ideal devices in the search for neutrinoless Double Beta Decay. Enlarging the mass of individual detectors would simplify the construction of a large experiment, but would also decrease the background per unit mass induced by alpha-emitters located close to the surfaces and background arising from external and internal gamma's. We present the very promising results obtained with a 2.13 kg TeO2 crystal. This bolometer, cooled down to a temperature of 10.5 mK in a dilution refrigerator located deep underground in the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, represents the largest thermal detector ever operated. The detector exhibited an energy resolution spanning a range from 3.9 keV (at 145 keV) to 7.8 keV (at the 2615 gamma-line of 208Tl) FWHM. We discuss the decrease in the background per unit mass that can be achieved increasing the mass of a bolometer.

Potential of a next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment based on ZnMoO4 scintillating bolometers

The search for neutrinoless double beta decay probes lepton number conservation with high sensitivity and investigates the neutrino nature and mass scale. Experiments presently in preparation will cover the quasi-degeneracy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Probing the so-called inverted hierarchy region requires improved sensitivities and next-generation experiments, based either on large expansions of the present searches or on new ideas. We examine here the potential of a novel technology relying on ZnMoO4 scintillating bolometers, which can provide an experiment with background close to zero in the ton x year exposure scale. The promising performance of a pilot detector is presented, both in terms of energy resolution and background control. A preliminary study of the sensitivities of future experiments shows that the inverted hierarchy region is within the reach of the technique here proposed. A realistic phased approach program towards a next-generation search is presented and briefly discussed.

Search for beta plus/EC double beta decay of 120Te

We present a search for beta plus/EC double beta decay of 120Te performed with the CUORICINO experiment, an array of TeO2 cryogenic bolometers. After collecting 0.0573 kg y of 120Te, we see no evidence of a signal and therefore set the following limits on the half-life: T1/2 (0nu) > 1.9 10^{21} y at 90% C.L. for the 0 neutrino mode and T1/2 (2nu) > 7.6 10^{19} y at 90% C.L. for the two neutrino mode. These results improve the existing limits by almost three orders of magnitude (four in the case of 0 neutrino mode).

Search for CP violation in $D^{+} \to K^{-}K^{+}π^{+}$ decays

A model-independent search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo suppressed decay $D^+ \to K^- K^+π^+$ in a sample of approximately 370,000 decays is carried out. The data were collected by the LHCb experiment in 2010 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb$^{-1}$. The normalized Dalitz plot distributions for $D^+$ and $D^-$ are compared using four different binning schemes that are sensitive to different manifestations of CP violation. No evidence for CP asymmetry is found.

130Te Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay with CUORICINO

We report the final result of the CUORICINO experiment. Operated between 2003 and 2008, with a total exposure of 19.75 kg y of 130Te, CUORICINO was able to set a lower bound on the 130Te 0nDBD half-life of 2.8 10^{24} years at 90% C.L. The limit here reported includes the effects of systematic uncertainties that are examined in detail in the paper. The corresponding upper bound on the neutrino Majorana mass is in the range 300--710 meV, depending on the adopted nuclear matrix element evaluation.

CdWO4 scintillating bolometer for Double Beta Decay: Light and Heat anticorrelation, light yield and quenching factors

We report the performances of a 0.51 kg CdWO4 scintillating bolometer to be used for future Double Beta Decay Experiments. The simultaneous read-out of the heat and the scintillation light allows to discriminate between different interacting particles aiming at the disentanglement and the reduction of background contribution, key issue for next generation experiments. We will describe the observed anticorrelation between the heat and the light signal and we will show how this feature can be used in order to increase the energy resolution of the bolometer over the entire energy spectrum, improving up to a factor 2.6 on the 2615 keV line of 208Tl. The detector was tested in a 433 h background measurement that permitted to estimate extremely low internal trace contaminations of 232Th and 238U. The light yield of gamma/beta, alpha and neutrons is presented. Furthermore we developed a method in order to correctly evaluate the absolute thermal quenching factor of alpha particles in scintillating bolometers.

Characterization of ZnSe scintillating bolometers for Double Beta Decay

ZnSe scintillating bolometers are good candidates for future Double Beta Decay searches, because of the 82Se high Q-value and thanks to the possibility of alpha background rejection on the basis of the scintillation signal. In this paper we report the characteristics and the anomalies observed in an extensive study of these devices. Among them, an unexpected high emission from alpha particles, accompanied with an unusual pattern of the light vs. heat scatter plot. The perspectives for the application of this kind of detectors to search for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 82Se are presented.

Measurement of sigma(pp -> b anti-b X) at \sqrt(s)=7 TeV in the forward region

Decays of b hadrons into final states containing a D0 meson and a muon are used to measure the b anti-b production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. In the pseudorapidity interval 2 < eta < 6 and integrated over all transverse momenta we find that the average cross-section to produce b-flavoured or anti-b-flavoured hadrons is (75.3 +/- 5.4 +/- 13.0) microbarns.

Muon-induced backgrounds in the CUORICINO experiment

To better understand the contribution of cosmic ray muons to the CUORICINO background, 10 plastic scintillator detectors were installed at the CUORICINO site and operated during the final 3 months of the experiment. From these measurements, an upper limit of 0.0021 counts/(keV kg yr) (95% CL) was obtained on the cosmic ray-induced background in the neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. The measurements were also compared to Geant4 simulations.

Performance of ZnMoO4 crystal as cryogenic scintillating bolometer to search for double beta decay of molybdenum

Zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) single crystals were grown for the first time by the Czochralski method and their luminescence was measured under X ray excitation in the temperature range 85-400 K. Properties of ZnMoO4 crystal as cryogenic low temperature scintillator were checked for the first time. Radioactive contamination of the ZnMoO4 crystal was estimated as <0.3 mBq/kg (228-Th) and 8 mBq/kg (226-Ra). Thanks to the simultaneous measurement of the scintillation light and the phonon signal, the alpha particles can be discriminated from the gamma/beta interactions, making this compound extremely promising for the search of neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 100-Mo. We also report on the ability to discriminate the alpha-induced background without the light measurement, thanks to a different shape of the thermal signal that characterizes gamma/beta and alpha particle interactions.

Production of high purity TeO2 single crystals for the study of neutrinoless double beta decay

High purity TeO2 crystals are produced to be used for the search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Dedicated production lines for raw material synthesis, crystal growth and surface processing were built compliant with radio-purity constraints specific to rare event physics experiments. High sensitivity measurements of radio-isotope concentrations in raw materials, reactants, consumables, ancillaries and intermediary products used for TeO2 crystals production are reported. Production and certification protocols are presented and resulting ready-to-use TeO2 crystals are described.

Prompt K_short production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=0.9 TeV

The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8 +/- 1.0 microbarn^-1. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0. The data are found to be in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and generator expectations.

The Microcalorimeter Arrays for a Rhenium Experiment (MARE): a next-generation calorimetric neutrino mass experiment

Neutrino oscillation experiments have proved that neutrinos are massive particles, but can't determine their absolute mass scale. Therefore the neutrino mass is still an open question in elementary particle physics. An international collaboration is growing around the project of Microcalorimeter Arrays for a Rhenium Experiment (MARE) for directly measuring the neutrino mass with a sensitivity of about 0.2eV/c2. Many groups are joining their experiences and technical expertise in a common effort towards this challenging experiment. We discuss the different scenarios and the impact of MARE as a complement of KATRIN.

CUORE: A Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events

CUORE is a proposed tightly packed array of 1000 TeO2 bolometers, each being a cube 5 cm on a side with a mass of 760 g. The array consists of 25 vertical towers, arranged in a square of 5 towers by 5 towers, each containing 10 layers of 4 crystals. The design of the detector is optimized for ultralow-background searches: for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te (33.8% abundance), cold dark matter, solar axions, and rare nuclear decays. A preliminary experiment involving 20 crystals 3x3x6 cm3 of 340 g has been completed, and a single CUORE tower is being constructed as a smaller scale experiment called CUORICINO. The expected performance and sensitivity, based on Monte Carlo simulations and extrapolations of present results, are reported.
