Holonomy rigidity for Ricci-flat metrics

On a closed connected oriented manifold MM we study the space M∥(M)\mathcal{M}_\|(M) of all Riemannian metrics which admit a non-zero parallel spinor on the universal covering. Such metrics are Ricci-flat, and all known Ricci-flat metrics are of this form. We show the following: The space M∥(M)\mathcal{M}_\|(M) is a smooth submanifold of the space of all metrics, and its premoduli space is a smooth finite-dimensional manifold. The holonomy group is locally constant on M∥(M)\mathcal{M}_\|(M). If MM is spin, then the dimension of the space of parallel spinors is a locally constant function on M∥(M)\mathcal{M}_\|(M).

Limiting configurations for solutions of Hitchin's equation

We review recent work on the compactification of the moduli space of Hitchin's self-duality equation. We study the degeneration behavior near the ends of this moduli space in a set of generic directions by showing how limiting configurations can be desingularized. Following ideas of Hitchin, we can relate the top boundary stratum of this space of limiting configurations to a Prym variety. A key rôle is played by the family of rotationally symmetric solutions to the self-duality equation on C\mathbb C, which we discuss in detail here.

Ends of the moduli space of Higgs bundles

We associate to each stable Higgs pair (A0,Φ0)(A_0,Φ_0) on a compact Riemann surface XX a singular limiting configuration (A∞,Φ∞)(A_\infty,Φ_\infty), assuming that det⁡Φ\det Φ has only simple zeroes. We then prove a desingularization theorem by constructing a family of solutions (At,tΦt)(A_t,tΦ_t) to Hitchin's equations which converge to this limiting configuration as t→∞t \to \infty. This provides a new proof, via gluing methods, for elements in the ends of the Higgs bundle moduli space and identifies a dense open subset of the boundary of the compactification of this moduli space.

Energy functionals and soliton equations for G_2-forms

We extend short-time existence and stability of the Dirichlet energy flow as proven in a previous paper by the authors to a broader class of energy functionals. Furthermore, we derive some monotonely decreasing quantities for the Dirichlet energy flow and investigate an equation of soliton type. In particular, we show that nearly parallel G_2-structures satisfy this soliton equation and study their infinitesimal soliton deformations.

Calabi-Yau manifolds with BB-fields

In recent work N. Hitchin introduced the concept of "generalised geometry". The key feature of generalised structures is that that they can be acted on by both diffeomorphisms and 2-forms, the so-called BB-fields. In this lecture, we give a basic introduction and explain some of the fundamental ideas. Further, we discuss some examples of generalised geometries starting from the usual notion of a Calabi-Yau manifold, as well as applications to string theory.

Deformations of associative submanifolds with boundary

Let MM be a topological G2G_2-manifold. We prove that the space of infinitesimal associative deformations of a compact associative submanifold YY with boundary in a coassociative submanifold XX is the solution space of an elliptic problem. For a connected boundary ∂Y\partial Y of genus gg, the index is given by ∫∂Yc1(νX)+1−g\int_{\partial Y}c_1(ν_X)+1-g, where νXν_X denotes the orthogonal complement of T∂YT\partial Y in TX∣∂YTX_{|\partial Y} and c1(νX)c_1(ν_X) the first Chern class of νXν_X with respect to its natural complex structure. Further, we exhibit explicit examples of non-trivial index.

Gauge theory in dimension 77

We first review the notion of a G2G_2-manifold, defined in terms of a principal G2G_2 ("gauge") bundle over a 77-dimensional manifold, before discussing their relation to supergravity. In a second thread, we focus on associative submanifolds and present their deformation theory. In particular, we elaborate on a deformation problem with coassociative boundary condition. Its space of infinitesimal deformations can be identified with the solution space of an elliptic equation whose index is given by a topological formula.

Metric bundles of split signature and type II supergravity

We study the geometry of type II supergravity compactifications in terms of an oriented vector bundle EE, endowed with a bundle metric of split signature and further datum. The geometric structure is associated with a so-called generalised GG-structure and characterised by an EE-spinor ρρ, which we can regard as a differential form of mixed degree. This enables us to reformulate the field equations of type II supergravity as an integrability condition of type dHρ=0d_Hρ=0, where dH=d+H∧d_H=d+H\wedge is the twisted differential on forms. Finally, we investigate some geometric properties of integrable structures and formulate various no-go theorems.

Special metrics and Triality

We investigate a new 8-dimensional Riemannian geometry defined by a generic closed and coclosed 3-form with stabiliser PSU(3), and which arises as a critical point of Hitchin's variational principle. We give a Riemannian characterisation of this structure in terms of invariant spinor-valued 1-forms, which are harmonic with respect to the twisted Dirac operator $\Db$ on Δ⊗Λ1Δ\otimesΛ^1. We establish various obstructions to the existence of topological reductions to PSU(3). For compact manifolds, we also give sufficient conditions for topological PSU(3)-structures that can be lifted to topological SU(3)-structures. We also construct the first known compact example of an integrable non-symmetric PSU(3)-structure. In the same vein, we give a new Riemannian characterisation for topological quaternionic Kähler structures which are defined by an Sp(1)⋅Sp(2)Sp(1)\cdot Sp(2)-invariant self-dual 4-form. Again, we show that this form is closed if and only if the corresponding spinor-valued 1-form is harmonic for $\Db$ and that these equivalent conditions produce constraints on the Ricci tensor.

Conformal properties of harmonic spinors and lightlike geodesics in signature (1,1)(1,1)

We are studying the harmonic and twistor equation on Lorentzian surfaces, that is a two dimensional orientable manifold with a metric of signature (1,1)(1,1). We will investigate the properties of the solutions of these equations and try to relate the conformal invariant dimension of the space of harmonic and twistor spinors to the natural conformal invariants given by the Lorentzian metric. We will introduce the notion of semi-conformally flat surfaces and establish a complete classification of the possible dimensions for this family.
