Holonomy rigidity for Ricci-flat metrics

On a closed connected oriented manifold MM we study the space M∥(M)\mathcal{M}_\|(M) of all Riemannian metrics which admit a non-zero parallel spinor on the universal covering. Such metrics are Ricci-flat, and all known Ricci-flat metrics are of this form. We show the following: The space M∥(M)\mathcal{M}_\|(M) is a smooth submanifold of the space of all metrics, and its premoduli space is a smooth finite-dimensional manifold. The holonomy group is locally constant on M∥(M)\mathcal{M}_\|(M). If MM is spin, then the dimension of the space of parallel spinors is a locally constant function on M∥(M)\mathcal{M}_\|(M).

Limiting configurations for solutions of Hitchin's equation

We review recent work on the compactification of the moduli space of Hitchin's self-duality equation. We study the degeneration behavior near the ends of this moduli space in a set of generic directions by showing how limiting configurations can be desingularized. Following ideas of Hitchin, we can relate the top boundary stratum of this space of limiting configurations to a Prym variety. A key rôle is played by the family of rotationally symmetric solutions to the self-duality equation on C\mathbb C, which we discuss in detail here.

Teichmüller theory for conic surfaces

In this paper we develop a systematic deformation theory for conic constant curvature metrics on a closed surface when all cone angles are less than 2π2π; in particular, we define and study the Teichmüller space Tγ,kconic\mathcal{T}^{\mathrm{conic}}_{γ,k} of conic constant curvature metrics on a surface of genus γγ with kk conic points. The methods here are adopted from higher dimensional global analysis, generalizing Tromba's approach to the study of the standard Teichmüller space Tγ\mathcal{T}_γ. The main new ingredient is the theory of elliptic conic operators.

Ends of the moduli space of Higgs bundles

We associate to each stable Higgs pair (A0,Φ0)(A_0,Φ_0) on a compact Riemann surface XX a singular limiting configuration (A∞,Φ∞)(A_\infty,Φ_\infty), assuming that det⁡Φ\det Φ has only simple zeroes. We then prove a desingularization theorem by constructing a family of solutions (At,tΦt)(A_t,tΦ_t) to Hitchin's equations which converge to this limiting configuration as t→∞t \to \infty. This provides a new proof, via gluing methods, for elements in the ends of the Higgs bundle moduli space and identifies a dense open subset of the boundary of the compactification of this moduli space.

Energy functionals and soliton equations for G_2-forms

We extend short-time existence and stability of the Dirichlet energy flow as proven in a previous paper by the authors to a broader class of energy functionals. Furthermore, we derive some monotonely decreasing quantities for the Dirichlet energy flow and investigate an equation of soliton type. In particular, we show that nearly parallel G_2-structures satisfy this soliton equation and study their infinitesimal soliton deformations.

Global rigidity of 3-dimensional cone-manifolds

We prove global rigidity for compact hyperbolic and spherical cone-3-manifolds with cone-angles ≤π\leq π (which are not Seifert fibered in the spherical case), furthermore for a class of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds of finite volume with cone-angles ≤π\leq π, possibly with boundary consisting of totally geodesic hyperbolic turnovers. To that end we first generalize our local rigidity result to the setting of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds of finite volume as above. We then use the geometric techniques developed by Boileau, Leeb and Porti to deform the cone-manifold structure to a complete non-singular or a geometric orbifold structure, where global rigidity holds due to Mostow-Prasad rigidity in the hyperbolic case, resp. a result of de Rham in the spherical case. This strategy has already been implemented successfully by Kojima in the compact hyperbolic case if the singular locus is a link using Hodgson-Kerckhoff local rigidity.

Local rigidity of 3-dimensional cone-manifolds

We investigate the local deformation space of 3-dimensional cone-manifold structures of constant curvature κ∈{−1,0,1}κ\in \{-1,0,1\} and cone-angles ≤π\leq π. Under this assumption on the cone-angles the singular locus will be a trivalent graph. In the hyperbolic and the spherical case our main result is a vanishing theorem for the first L2L^2-cohomology group of the smooth part of the cone-manifold with coefficients in the flat bundle of infinitesimal isometries. We conclude local rigidity from this. In the Euclidean case we prove that the first L2L^2-cohomology group of the smooth part with coefficients in the flat tangent bundle is represented by parallel forms.
