Contact Graphs, Boundaries, and a Central Limit Theorem for CAT(0) cubical complexes

Let $X$ be a nonelementary CAT(0) cubical complex. We prove that if $X$ is essential and irreducible, then the contact graph of $X$ (introduced in \cite{Hagen}) is unbounded and its boundary is homeomorphic to the regular boundary of $X$ (defined in \cite{Fernos}, \cite{KarSageev}). Using this, we reformulate the Caprace-Sageev's Rank-Rigidity Theorem in terms of the action on the contact graph. Let $G$ be a group with a nonelementary action on $X$, and $(Z_n)$ a random walk corresponding to a generating probability measure on $G$ with finite second moment. Using this identification of the boundary of the contact graph, we prove a Central Limit Theorem for $(Z_n)$, namely that $\frac{d(Z_n o,o)-nA}{\sqrt n}$ converges in law to a non-degenerate Gaussian distribution (where $A=\lim \frac{d(Z_no,o)}{n}$ is the drift of the random walk, and $o\in X$ is an arbitrary basepoint).

Entropy and drift in word hyperbolic groups

The fundamental inequality of Guivarc'h relates the entropy and the drift of random walks on groups. It is strict if and only if the random walk does not behave like the uniform measure on balls. We prove that, in any nonelementary hyperbolic group which is not virtually free, endowed with a word distance, the fundamental inequality is strict for symmetric measures with finite support, uniformly for measures with a given support. This answers a conjecture of S. Lalley. For admissible measures, this is proved using previous results of Ancona and Blach{è}re-Ha{ï}ssinsky-Mathieu. For non-admissible measures, this follows from a counting result, interesting in its own right: we show that, in any infinite index subgroup, the number of non-distorted points is exponentially small. The uniformity is obtained by studying the behavior of measures that degenerate towards a measure supported on an elementary subgroup.

Sharp lower bounds for the asymptotic entropy of symmetric random walks

The entropy, the spectral radius and the drift are important numerical quantities associated to random walks on countable groups. We prove sharp inequalities relating those quantities for walks with a finite second moment, improving upon previous results of Avez, Varopoulos, Carne, Ledrappier. We also deduce inequalities between these quantities and the volume growth of the group. Finally, we show that the equality case in our inequality is rather rigid.

Poisson boundary of groups acting on real trees

We give a geometric description of the Poisson boundaries of certain extensions of free and hyperbolic groups. In particular, we get a full description of the Poisson boundaries of free-by-cyclic groups. We rely upon the description of Poisson boundaries by means of a topological compactification as developed by Kaimanovich. All the groups studied here share the property of admitting a sufficiently complicated action on some real tree.

Randomly growing braid on three strands and the manta ray

Consider the braid group $B_3=< a,b| aba=bab>$ and the nearest neighbor random walk defined by a probability $ν$ with support $\{a,a^{-1},b,b^{-1}\}$. The rate of escape of the walk is explicitly expressed in function of the unique solution of a set of eight polynomial equations of degree three over eight indeterminates. We also explicitly describe the harmonic measure of the induced random walk on $B_3$ quotiented by its center. The method and results apply, mutatis mutandis, to nearest neighbor random walks on dihedral Artin groups.
