Soliton resolution for critical co-rotational wave maps and radial cubic wave equation

In this paper we prove the soliton resolution conjecture for all times, for all solutions in the energy space, of the co-rotational wave map equation. To our knowledge this is the first such result for all initial data in the energy space for a wave-type equation. We also prove the corresponding results for radial solutions, which remain bounded in the energy norm, of the cubic (energy-critical) nonlinear wave equation in space dimension 4.

A sufficient condition for asymptotic stability of kinks in general (1+1)-scalar field models

We study stability properties of kinks for the (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear scalar field theory models \begin{equation*} \partial_t^2ϕ-\partial_x^2ϕ+ W'(ϕ) = 0, \quad (t,x)\in\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}. \end{equation*} The orbital stability of kinks under general assumptions on the potential $W$ is a consequence of energy arguments. Our main result is the derivation of a simple and explicit sufficient condition on the potential $W$ for the asymptotic stability of a given kink. This condition applies to any static or moving kink, in particular no symmetry assumption is required. Last, motivated by the Physics literature, we present applications of the criterion to the $P(ϕ)_2$ theories and the double sine-Gordon theory.

Long-time asymptotics of the one-dimensional damped nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

For the one-dimensional nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation \[ \partial_{t}^{2}u+2α\partial_{t}u-\partial_{x}^{2}u+u-|u|^{p-1}u=0 \quad \mbox{on $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}$,}\] with $α>0$ and $p>2$, we prove that any global finite energy solution either converges to $0$ or behaves asymptotically as $t\to \infty$ as the sum of $K\geq 1$ decoupled solitary waves. In the multi-soliton case $K\geq 2$, the solitary waves have alternate signs and their distances are of order $\log t$.

Blowup on an arbitrary compact set for a Schödinger equation with nonlinear source term

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on ${\mathbb R}^N $, $N\ge 1$, \begin{equation*} \partial _t u = i Δu + λ| u |^αu \quad \mbox{on ${\mathbb R}^N $, $α>0$,} \end{equation*} with $λ\in {\mathbb C}$ and $\Re λ>0$, for $H^1$-subcritical nonlinearities, i.e. $α>0$ and $(N-2) α< 4$. Given a compact set $K \subset {\mathbb R}^N $, we construct $H^1$ solutions that are defined on $(-T,0)$ for some $T>0$, and blow up on $K $ at $t=0$. The construction is based on an appropriate ansatz. The initial ansatz is simply $U_0(t,x) = ( \Re λ)^{- \frac {1} {α}} (-αt + A(x) )^{ -\frac {1} {α} - i \frac {\Im λ} {α\Re λ} }$, where $A\ge 0$ vanishes exactly on $ K $, which is a solution of the ODE $u'= λ| u |^αu$. We refine this ansatz inductively, using ODE techniques. We complete the proof by energy estimates and a compactness argument. This strategy is reminiscent of~[3, 4].

Full family of flattening solitary waves for the mass critical generalized KdV equation

For the mass critical generalized KdV equation $\partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + u^5)=0$ on $\mathbb R$, we construct a full family of flattening solitary wave solutions. Let $Q$ be the unique even positive solution of $Q''+Q^5=Q$. For any $ν\in (0,\frac 13)$, there exist global (for $t\geq 0$) solutions of the equation with the asymptotic behavior \begin{equation*} u(t,x)= t^{-\fracν2} Q\left(t^{-ν} (x-x(t))\right)+w(t,x) \end{equation*} where, for some $c>0$, \begin{equation*} x(t)\sim c t^{1-2ν} \quad \mbox{and}\quad \|w(t)\|_{H^1(x>\frac 12 x(t))} \to 0\quad \mbox{as $t\to +\infty$.} \end{equation*} Moreover, the initial data for such solutions can be taken arbitrarily close to a solitary wave in the energy space. The long-time flattening of the solitary wave is forced by a slowly decaying tail in the initial data. This result and its proof are inspired and complement recent blow-up results for the critical generalized KdV equation. This article is also motivated by previous constructions of exotic behaviors close to solitons for other nonlinear dispersive equations such as the energy-critical wave equation.

Construction of a minimal mass blow up solution of the modified Benjamin-Ono equation

We construct a minimal mass blow up solution of the modified Benjamin-Ono equation (mBO) \[ u_{t}+(u^3-D^1 u)_{x}=0, \] which is a standard mass critical dispersive model. Let $Q\in H^{\frac 12}$, $Q>0$, be the unique ground state solution of $D^1 Q +Q=Q^3$, constructed using variational arguments by Weinstein (Comm. PDE, 12 (1987), J. Diff. Eq., 69 (1987)) and Albert, Bona and Saut (Proc. Royal London Soc., 453 (1997)), and whose uniqueness was recently proved by Frank and Lenzmann (Acta Math., 210 (2013)). We show the existence of a solution $S$ of (mBO) satisfying $\|S \|_{L^2}=\|Q\|_{L^2}$ and \[ S(t)-\frac1{λ^{\frac12}(t)} Q\left(\frac{\cdot - x(t)}{λ(t)}\right)\to 0\quad \mbox{ in }\ H^{\frac 12}(\mathbb R) \mbox{ as }\ t\downarrow 0, \] where \[ λ(t)\sim t,\quad x(t) \sim -|\ln t| \quad \hbox{and}\quad \|S(t)\|_{\dot H^{\frac 12}} \sim t^{-\frac 12}\|Q\|_{\dot H^{\frac 12}} \quad \hbox{as}\ t\downarrow 0. \] This existence result is analogous to the one obtained by Martel, Merle and Raphaël (J. Eur. Math. Soc., 17 (2015)) for the mass critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. However, in contrast with the (gKdV) equation, for which the blow up problem is now well-understood in a neighborhood of the ground state, $S$ is the first example of blow up solution for (mBO). The proof involves the construction of a blow up profile, energy estimates as well as refined localization arguments, developed in the context of Benjamin-Ono type equations by Kenig, Martel and Robbiano (Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré, Anal. Non Lin., 28 (2011)). Due to the lack of information on the (mBO) flow around the ground state, the energy estimates have to be considerably sharpened in the present paper.

Nonexistence of small, odd breathers for a class of nonlinear wave equations

In this note, we show that for a large class of nonlinear wave equations with odd nonlinearities, any globally defined odd solution which is small in the energy space decays to $0$ in the local energy norm. In particular, this result shows nonexistence of small, odd breathers for some classical nonlinear Klein Gordon equations such as the sine Gordon equation and $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ models. It also partially answers a question of Soffer and Weinstein in \cite[p. 19]{MR1681113} about nonexistence of breathers for the cubic NLKG in dimension one.

Sharp asymptotics for the minimal mass blow up solution of critical gKdV equation

Let $S$ be a minimal mass blow up solution of the critical generalized KdV equation as constructed by Martel, Merle and Raphaël in arXiv:1204.4624. We prove both time and space sharp asymptotics for $S$ close to the blow up time. Let $Q$ be the unique ground state of (gKdV), satisfying $Q"+Q^5=Q$. First, we show that there exist universal smooth profiles $Q_k\in\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})$ (with $Q_0=Q$) and a constant $c_0\in\mathbb{R}$ such that, fixing the blow up time at $t=0$ and appropriate scaling and translation parameters, $S$ satisfies, for any $m\geqslant 0$, \[ \partial_x^m S(t) - \sum_{k=0}^{[m/2]} \frac 1{t^{\frac 12+m-2k}} Q_k^{(m-k)}\left(\frac{\cdot+ \frac1t}{t}+c_0\right)\to 0\quad \mbox{in}\ L^2 \mbox{as}\ t\downarrow 0. \] Second, we prove that, for $0<t\ll 1$, $x\leqslant -\frac 1t -1$, \[ S(t,x) \sim - \frac 12 \|Q\|_{L^1} |x|^{-3/2}, \] and related bounds for the derivatives of $S(t)$ of any order. We also prove $\int_{\mathbb{R}} S(t,x)\,dx=0$.

Codimension one threshold manifold for the critical gKdV equation

We construct the 'threshold manifold' near the soliton for the mass critical gKdV equation, completing results obtained in arXiv:1204.4625 and arXiv:1204.4624. In a neighborhood of the soliton, this C1 manifold of codimension one separates solutions blowing up in finite time and solutions in the 'exit regime'. On the manifold, solutions are global in time and converge locally to a soliton. In particular, the soliton behavior is strongly unstable by blowup.

Construction of multi-solitons for the energy-critical wave equation in dimension 5

We construct 2-solitons of any speed of the focusing energy-critical nonlinear wave equation in dimension 5. The existence result also holds for the case of K-solitons, for any K >2, assuming that the speeds are collinear. The main difficulty of the construction is the strong interaction between the solitons due to the slow spatial decay of the single soliton. This is in contrast with previous constructions of multi-solitons for other nonlinear models (like generalized KdV and nonlinear Schrodinger equations in energy subcritical cases), where the interactions are exponentially small in time due to the exponential decay of the solitons.

Strongly interacting blow up bubbles for the mass critical NLS

We construct a new class of multi-solitary wave solutions for the mass critical two dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). Given any integer K>1, there exists a global (for positive time) solution of (NLS) that decomposes asymptotically into a sum of solitary waves centered at the vertices of a K-sided regular polygon and concentrating at a logarithmic rate in large time. This solution blows up in infinite time with logarithmic rate. Using the pseudo-conformal transform, this yields the first example of solution blowing up in finite time with a rate strictly above the pseudo-conformal one. Such solution concentrates K bubbles at a point. These special behaviors are due to strong interactions between the waves, in contrast with previous works on multi-solitary waves of (NLS) where interactions do not affect the blow up rate.

Blow up for the critical gKdV equation II: minimal mass dynamics

We fully revisit the near soliton dynamics for the mass critical (gKdV) equation. In Part I, for a class of initial data close to the soliton, we prove that only three scenario can occur: (BLOW UP) the solution blows up in finite time $T$ in a universal regime with speed $1/(T-t)$; (SOLITON) the solution is global and converges to a soliton in large time; (EXIT) the solution leaves any small neighborhood of the modulated family of solitons in the scale invariant $L^2$ norm. Regimes (BLOW UP) and (EXIT) are proved to be stable. We also show in this class that any nonpositive energy initial data (except solitons) yields finite time blow up, thus obtaining the classification of the solitary wave at zero energy. In Part II, we classify minimal mass blow up by proving existence and uniqueness (up to invariances of the equation) of a minimal mass blow up solution $S(t)$. We also completely describe the blow up behavior of $S(t)$. Second, we prove that $S(t)$ is the universal attractor in the (EXIT) case, i.e. any solution as above in the (EXIT) case is close to $S$ (up to invariances) in $L^2$ at the exit time. In particular, assuming scattering for $S(t)$ (in large positive time), we obtain that any solution in the (EXIT) scenario also scatters, thus achieving the description of the near soliton dynamics.

Minimal mass blow up solutions for a double power nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with double power nonlinearity, where one power is focusing and mass critical and the other mass sub-critical. Classical variational arguments ensure that initial data with mass less than the mass of the ground state of the mass critical problem lead to global in time solutions. We are interested by the threshold dynamic and in particular by the existence of finite time blow up minimal solutions. For the mass critical problem, such an object exists thanks to the explicit conformal symmetry, and is in fact unique. For the focusing double power nonlinearity, we exhibit a new class of minimal blow up solutions with blow up rates deeply affected by the double power nonlinearity. The analysis adapts the recent approach developed by Raphaël and Szeftel for the construction of minimal blow up elements.

On the nonexistence of pure multi-solitons for the quartic gKdV equation

We consider the quartic (nonintegrable) (gKdV) equation. Let u(t) be an outgoing 2-soliton of the equation, i.e. a solution behaving exactly as the sum of two solitons (of speeds c1 and c2) for large positive time. In arXiv:0910.3204, for nearly equal solitons, the solution u(t) is computed up to some order of epsilon=1-c2/c1, everywhere in time and space. In particular, it is deduced that u(t) is not a multi-soliton for large negative time, proving the nonexistence of pure multi-soliton in this context. In the present paper, we prove the same result for an explicit range of speeds: 3/4 c1< c2< c1, by a different approach, which does not longer require a precise description of the solution. In fact, the nonexistence result holds for outgoing N-solitons, for any N>1, under an explicit assumption on the speeds, which is a natural generalization of the condition for N=2.

Blow up for the critical gKdV equation III: exotic regimes

We consider the blow up problem in the energy space for the critical (gKdV) equation in the continuation of part I and part II. We know from part I that the unique and stable blow up rate for solutions close to the solitons with strong decay on the right is $1/t$. In this paper, we construct non-generic blow up regimes in the energy space by considering initial data with explicit slow decay on the right in space. We obtain finite time blow up solutions with speed $t^{-ν}$ where $ ν>11/13,$ as well as global in time growing up solutions with both exponential growth or power growth. These solutions can be taken with initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state solitary wave.

Local well-posedness and blow up in the energy space for a class of L2 critical dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations

We consider a family of dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equations (dgBO) which are critical with respect to the L2 norm and interpolate between the critical modified (BO) equation and the critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation (gKdV). First, we prove local well-posedness in the energy space for these equations, extending results by Kenig, Ponce and Vega concerning the (gKdV) equations. Second, we address the blow up problem in the spirit of works of Martel and Merle on the critical (gKdV) equation, by studying rigidity properties of the (dgBO) flow in a neighborhood of solitons. We prove that when the model is close to critical (gKdV), solutions of negative energy close to solitons blow up in finite or infinite time in the energy space. The blow up proof requires in particular extensions to (dgBO) of monotonicity results for localized versions of L2 norms by pseudo-differential operator tools.
