Decomposition of Pauli groups via weak central products

For any $m \ge 1$ and odd prime power $\mathtt{q}=\mathtt{p}^m$, for $\mathtt{q}=2$, and for any $n \ge 1$, we show a result of decomposition for Pauli groups $\mathcal{P}_{n,\mathtt{q}}$ in terms of weak central products. This can be used to describe the underlying structure of Pauli groups on $n$ qudits of dimension $\mathtt{q}$ and enables us to identify abelian subgroups of $\mathcal{P}_{n,\mathtt{q}}$. As a consequence of our main results, we show a similar factorisation for the so--called `lifted' Pauli groups, recently introduced by Gottesman and Kuperberg in the context of error-correcting codes in quantum information theory.

Realization of Lie algebras of high dimension via pseudo-bosonic operators

The present paper is the third contribution of a series of works, where we investigate pseudo--bosonic operators and their connections with finite dimensional Lie algebras. We show that all finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras (over the complex field) can be realized by central extensions of Lie algebras of pseudo-bosonic operators. This result is interesting, because it provides new examples of dynamical systems for nilpotent Lie algebras of any dimension. One could ask whether these operators are intrinsic with the notion of nilpotence or not, but this is false. In fact we exibit both a simple Lie algebra and a solvable nonnilpotent Lie algebra, which can be realized in terms of pseudo-bosonic operators.

A generalization of the probability that the commutator of two group elements is equal to a given element

The probability that the commutator of two group elements is equal to a given element has been introduced in literature few years ago. Several authors have investigated this notion with methods of the representation theory and with combinatorial techniques. Here we illustrate that a wider context may be considered and show some structural restrictions on the group.

On an argument of J.--F. Cardoso dealing with perturbations of joint diagonalizers

B. Afsari has recently proposed a new approach to the matrix joint diagonalization, introduced by J.--F. Cardoso in 1994, in order to investigate the independent component analysis and the blind signal processing in a wider prospective. Delicate notions of linear algebra and differential geometry are involved in the works of B. Afsari and the present paper continues such a line of research, focusing on a theoretical condition which has significant consequences in the numerical applications.

Bounds for the relative n-th nilpotency degree in compact groups

The line of investigation of the present paper goes back to a classical work of W. H. Gustafson of the 1973, in which it is described the probability that two randomly chosen group elements commute. In the same work, he gave some bounds for this kind of probability, providing information on the group structure. We have recently obtained some generalizations of his results for finite groups. Here we improve them in the context of the compact groups.

On the Connectivity of the Sylow Graph of a Finite Group

The Sylow graph $Γ(G)$ of a finite group $G$ originated from recent investigations on the so--called $\mathbf{N}$--closed classes of groups. The connectivity of $Γ(G)$ was proved only few years ago, involving the classification of finite simple groups, and the structure of $G$ may be strongly restricted, once information on $Γ(G)$ are given. The first result of the present paper deals with a condition on $\mathbf{N}$--closed classes of groups. The second result deals with a computational criterion, related to the connectivity of $Γ(G)$.

Some considerations on the nonabelian tensor square of crystallographic groups

The nonabelian tensor square $G\otimes G$ of a polycyclic group $G$ is a polycyclic group and its structure arouses interest in many contexts. The same assertion is still true for wider classes of solvable groups. This motivated us to work on two levels in the present paper: on a hand, we investigate the growth of the Hirsch length of $G\otimes G$ by looking at that of $G$, on another hand, we study the nonabelian tensor product of pro--$p$--groups of finite coclass, which are a remarkable class of solvable groups without center, and then we do considerations on their Hirsch length. Among other results, restrictions on the Schur multiplier will be discussed.

The probability that $x$ and $y$ commute in a compact group

We show that a compact group $G$ has finite conjugacy classes, i.e., is an FC-group if and only if its center $Z(G)$ is open if and only if its commutator subgroup $G'$ is finite. Let $d(G)$ denote the Haar measure of the set of all pairs $(x,y)$ in $G \times G$ for which $[x,y] = 1$; this, formally, is the probability that two randomly picked elements commute. We prove that $d(G)$ is always rational and that it is positive if and only if $G$ is an extension of an FC-group by a finite group. This entails that $G$ is abelian by finite. The proofs involve measure theory, transformation groups, Lie theory of arbitrary compact groups, and representation theory of compact groups. Examples and references to the history of the discussion are given at the end of the paper.
