The weak-type Carleson theorem via wave packet estimates

We prove that the weak-$L^{p}$ norms, and in fact the sparse $(p,1)$-norms, of the Carleson maximal partial Fourier sum operator are $\lesssim (p-1)^{-1}$ as $p\to 1^+$. This is an improvement on the Carleson-Hunt theorem, where the same upper bound on the growth order is obtained for the restricted weak-$L^p$ type norm, and which was the strongest quantitative bound prior to our result. Furthermore, our sparse $(p,1)$-norms bound imply new and stronger results at the endpoint $p=1$. In particular, we obtain that the Fourier series of functions from the weighted Arias de Reyna space $ QA_{\infty}(w) $, which contains the weighted Antonov space $L\log L\log\log\log L(\mathbb T; w)$, converge almost everywhere whenever $w\in A_1$. This is an extension of the results of Antonov and Arias De Reyna, where $w$ must be Lebesgue measure. The backbone of our treatment is a new, sharply quantified near-$L^1$ Carleson embedding theorem for the modulation-invariant wave packet transform. The proof of the Carleson embedding relies on a newly developed smooth multi-frequency decomposition which, near the endpoint $p=1$, outperforms the abstract Hilbert space approach of past works, including the seminal one by Nazarov, Oberlin and Thiele. As a further example of application, we obtain a quantified version of the family of sparse bounds for the bilinear Hilbert transforms due to Culiuc, Ou and the first author.

Wavelet Representation of Singular Integral Operators

This article develops a novel approach to the representation of singular integral operators of Calderón-Zygmund type in terms of continuous model operators, in both the classical and the bi-parametric setting. The representation is realized as a finite sum of averages of wavelet projections of either cancellative or noncancellative type, which are themselves Calderón-Zygmund operators. Both properties are out of reach for the established dyadic-probabilistic technique. Unlike their dyadic counterparts, our representation reflects the additional kernel smoothness of the operator being analyzed. Our representation formulas lead naturally to a new family of $T(1)$ theorems on weighted Sobolev spaces whose smoothness index is naturally related to kernel smoothness. In the one parameter case, we obtain the Sobolev space analogue of the $A_2$ theorem; that is, sharp dependence of the Sobolev norm of $T$ on the weight characteristic is obtained in the full range of exponents. In the bi-parametric setting, where local average sparse domination is not generally available, we obtain quantitative $A_p$ estimates which are best known, and sharp in the range $\max\{p,p'\}\geq 3$ for the fully cancellative case.

Directional square functions and a sharp Meyer lemma

Quantitative formulations of Fefferman's counterexample for the ball multiplier are naturally linked to square function and vector-valued estimates for directional singular integrals. The latter are usually referred to as Meyer-type lemmas and are traditionally attacked by combining weighted inequalities with sharp estimates for maximal directional averaging operators. This classical approach fails to give sharp bounds. In this article we develop a novel framework for square function estimates, based on directional Carleson embedding theorems and multi-parameter time-frequency analysis, which overcomes the limitations of weighted theory. In particular we prove the sharp form of Meyer's lemma, namely a sharp operator norm bound for vector-valued directional singular integrals, in both one and two parameters, in terms of the cardinality of the given set of directions. Our sharp Meyer lemma implies an improved quantification of the reverse square function estimate for tangential $δ\times δ^2$-caps on $\mathbb S^1$. We also prove sharp square function estimates for conical and radial multipliers. A suitable combination of these estimates yields a new and currently best known bound for the Fourier restriction to a $N$-gon, improving on previous results of A. Córdoba.

Multilinear operator-valued Calderón-Zygmund theory

We develop a general theory of multilinear singular integrals with operator-valued kernels, acting on tuples of UMD Banach spaces. This, in particular, involves investigating multilinear variants of the $\mathcal R$-boundedness condition naturally arising in operator-valued theory. We proceed by establishing a suitable representation of multilinear, operator-valued singular integrals in terms of operator-valued dyadic shifts and paraproducts, and studying the boundedness of these model operators via dyadic-probabilistic Banach space-valued analysis. In the bilinear case, we obtain a $T(1)$-type theorem without any additional assumptions on the Banach spaces other than the necessary UMD. Higher degrees of multilinearity are tackled via a new formulation of the Rademacher maximal function (RMF) condition. In addition to the natural UMD lattice cases, our RMF condition covers suitable tuples of non-commutative $L^p$-spaces. We employ our operator-valued theory to obtain new multilinear, multi-parameter, operator-valued theorems in the natural setting of UMD spaces with property $α$.

Multilinear singular integrals on non-commutative $L^p$ spaces

We prove $L^p$ bounds for the extensions of standard multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators to tuples of UMD spaces tied by a natural product structure. This can, for instance, mean the pointwise product in UMD function lattices, or the composition of operators in the Schatten-von Neumann subclass of the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space. We do not require additional assumptions beyond UMD on each space - in contrast to previous results, we e.g. show that the Rademacher maximal function property is not necessary. The obtained generality allows for novel applications. For instance, we prove new versions of fractional Leibniz rules via our results concerning the boundedness of multilinear singular integrals in non-commutative $L^p$ spaces. Our proof techniques combine a novel scheme of induction on the multilinearity index with dyadic-probabilistic techniques in the UMD space setting.

A modulation invariant Carleson embedding theorem outside local $L^2$

The article arXiv:1309.0945 by Do and Thiele develops a theory of Carleson embeddings in outer $L^p$ spaces for the wave packet transform of functions in $ L^p(\mathbb R)$, in the $2\leq p\leq \infty$ range referred to as local $L^2$. In this article, we formulate a suitable extension of this theory to exponents $1<p<2$, answering a question posed in arXiv:1309.0945. The proof of our main embedding theorem involves a refined multi-frequency Calderón-Zygmund decomposition. We apply our embedding theorem to recover the full known range of $L^p$ estimates for the bilinear Hilbert transforms without reducing to discrete model sums or appealing to generalized restricted weak-type interpolation.

Endpoint bounds for the bilinear Hilbert transform

We study the behavior of the bilinear Hilbert transform $\mathrm{BHT}$ at the boundary of the known boundedness region $\mathcal H$. A sample of our results is the estimate $| \langle\mathrm{BHT}(f_1,f_2),f_3 \rangle | \leq C |F_1|^{\frac34}|F_2| ^{\frac34} |F_3|^{-\frac12} \log\log \Big(\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{e}} + \frac{|F_3|}{\min\{|F_1|,|F_2|\}} \Big) $ valid for all tuples of sets $F_j \subset \mathbb R $ of finite measure and functions $f_j$ such that $|f_j| \leq \mathbf{1}_{F_j}$, $j=1,2,3$, with the additional restriction that $f_3$ be supported on a major subset $F_3'$ of $F_3$ that depends on $\{F_j:j=1,2,3\}$. The double logarithmic term improves over the single logarithmic term obtained by Bilyk and Grafakos. Whether the double logarithmic term can be removed entirely, as is the case for the quartile operator discussed by Demeter and the first author, remains open. We employ our endpoint results to describe the blow-up rate of weak-type and strong-type estimates for $\mathrm{BHT}$ as the tuple $\vec α$ approaches the boundary of $\mathcal H$. We also discuss bounds on Lorentz-Orlicz spaces near $L^{\frac23}$, improving on results of Carro, Grafakos, Martell and Soria. The main technical novelty in our article is an enhanced version of the multi-frequency Calderón-Zygmund decomposition by Nazarov, Oberlin and the second author.

Endpoint bounds for the quartile operator

It is a result by Lacey and Thiele that the bilinear Hilbert transform maps L^{p_1}(R) \times L^{p_2}(R) into L^{p_3}(R) whenever (p_1,p_2,p_3) is a Holder tuple with p_1,p_2 > 1 and p_3>2/3. We study the behavior of the quartile operator, which is the Walsh model for the bilinear Hilbert transform, when p_3=2/3. We show that the quartile operator maps L^{p_1}(R) \times L^{p_2}(R) into L^{2/3,\infty}(R) when p_1,p_2>1 and one component is restricted to subindicator functions. As a corollary, we derive that the quartile operator maps L^{p_1}(R) \times L^{p_2,2/3}(R) into L^{2/3,\infty}(R). We also provide restricted weak-type estimates and boundedness on Orlicz-Lorentz spaces near p_1=1,p_2=2 which improve, in the Walsh case, on results of Bilyk and Grafakos, and Carro-Grafakos-Martell-Soria. Our main tool is the multi-frequency Calderón-Zygmund decomposition first used by Nazarov, Oberlin and Thiele.

Grisvard's shift theorem near L^infinity and Yudovich theory on polygonal domains

Let Omega be a bounded, simply connected domain with boundary of class C^{1,1} except at finitely many points S_j where the boundary is locally a corner of aperture alpha_j<=pi/2. Improving on results of Grisvard, we show that the solution Gf to the Dirichlet problem on Omega with data f in L^infinity(Omega) and homogeneous boundary conditions has exponentially integrable second derivatives. The proof uses sharp L^p bounds for singular integrals on power weighted spaces inspired by the work of Buckley. Our results allow for the extension of the Yudovich theory of existence, uniqueness and regularity of weak solutions to the Euler equations on Omega x (0,T) to polygonal domains Omega as above.

Lacunary Fourier and Walsh-Fourier series near L^1

We prove that, for functions in the Orlicz class LloglogLloglogloglogL, lacunary subsequences of the Fourier and the Walsh-Fourier series converge almost everywhere. Our integrability condition is less stringent than the homologous assumption in the almost everywhere convergence theorems of Lie (Fourier case) and Do-Lacey (Walsh-Fourier case), where the quadruple logarithmic term is replaced by a triple logarithm. Our proof of the Walsh-Fourier case is self-contained and, in antithesis to Do and Lacey's argument, avoids the use of Antonov's lemma, arguing directly via novel weak-L^p bounds for the Walsh-Carleson operator.

The 3-dimensional oscillon equation

On a bounded three-dimensional smooth domain, we consider the generalized oscillon equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, with time-dependent damping and time-dependent squared speed of propagation. Under structural assumptions on the damping and the speed of propagation, which include the relevant physical case of reheating phase of inflation, we establish the existence of a pullback global attractor of optimal regularity, and finite-dimensionality of the kernel sections.

The Euler Equations in planar nonsmooth convex domains

We consider the Euler system set on a bounded convex planar domain, endowed with impermeability boundary conditions. This system is a model for the barotropic mode of the Primitive Equations on a rectangular domain. We show the existence of weak solutions with L^p vorticity for 4/3<= p <= 2, extending and enriching a previous result of Taylor. In the physically interesting case of a rectangular domain, a similar result holds for all 2<p<\infty as well. Moreover, we show the uniqueness of solutions with bounded initial vorticity. The main tool is a new BMO regularity estimate for the Dirichlet problem on domains with corners.

Logarithmic L^p bounds for maximal directional singular integrals in the plane

We discuss the L^p-boundedness of maximal singular integrals in the plane over a finite set V of N directions. Logarithmic bounds are established for a set V of arbitrary structure in the 2<=p<infinity range. Sharp bounds are proved for lacunary and Vargas sets of directions. The latter include the case of uniformly distributed directions and the finite truncations of the Cantor set. We make use of both classical harmonic analysis methods and product-BMO based time-frequency analysis techniques. As a further application of the latter, we derive an L^p almost orthogonality principle for Fourier restrictions to cones.

Asymptotics of the Coleman-Gurtin model

This paper is concerned with the integrodifferential equation $$\partial_t u-Δu -\int_0^\infty κ(s)Δu(t-s)\,\d s + φ(u)=f$$ arising in the Coleman-Gurtin's theory of heat conduction with hereditary memory, in presence of a nonlinearity $φ$ of critical growth. Rephrasing the equation within the history space framework, we prove the existence of global and exponential attractors of optimal regularity and finite fractal dimension for the related solution semigroup, acting both on the basic weak-energy space and on a more regular phase space.

Time-Dependent Attractor for the Oscillon Equation

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the nonautonomous evolution problem generated by the Klein-Gordon equation in an expanding background, in one space dimension with periodic boundary conditions, with a nonlinear potential of arbitrary polynomial growth. After constructing a suitable dynamical framework to deal with the explicit time dependence of the energy of the solution, we establish the existence of a regular, time-dependent global attractor. The sections of the attractor at given times have finite fractal dimension.
