On restriction of exponential sums to hypersurfaces with zero curvature

We prove essentially sharp bounds for the $L^p$ restriction of weighted Gauss sums to monomial curves. Getting the $L^2$ upper bound combines the $TT^*$ method for matrices with the first and second derivative test for exponential sums. The matching lower bound follows via constructive interference on short blocks of integers, near the critical point of the phase function. This method is used to make the broader point that restriction to hypersurfaces is really sensitive to curvature. Our results here complement earlier results by the author and Langowski.

On $L^{12}$ square root cancellation for exponential sums associated with nondegenerate curves in ${\mathbb R}^4$

We prove sharp $L^{12}$ estimates for exponential sums associated with nondegenerate curves in ${\mathbb R}^4$. We place Bourgain's progress on the Lindel"of hypothesis in a larger framework that contains a continuum of estimates of different flavor. We enlarge the spectrum of methods by combining decoupling with quadratic Weyl sum estimates, to address new cases of interest. All results are proved in the general framework of real analytic curves.

Small cap decouplings

We develop a toolbox for proving decouplings into boxes with diameter smaller than the canonical scale. As an application of this new technique, we solve three problems for which earlier methods have failed. We start by verifying the small cap decoupling for the parabola. Then we find sharp estimates for exponential sums with small frequency separation on the moment curve in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This part of the work relies on recent improved Kakeya-type estimates for planar tubes, as well as on new multilinear incidence bounds for plates and planks. We also combine our method with the recent advance on the reverse square function estimate, in order to prove small cap decoupling into square-like caps for the two dimensional cone. The Appendix by Roger Heath-Brown contains an application of the new exponential sum estimates for the moment curve, to the Riemann zeta-function.

Decouplings for curves and hypersurfaces with nonzero Gaussian curvature

We prove two types of results. First we develop the decoupling theory for hypersurfaces with nonzero Gaussian curvature, which extends our earlier work from \cite{BD3}. As a consequence of this we obtain sharp (up to $ε$ losses) Strichartz estimates for the hyperbolic Schrödinger equation on the torus. Our second main result is an $l^2$ decoupling for non degenerate curves which has implications for Vinogradov's mean value theorem.

The proof of the $l^2$ Decoupling Conjecture

We prove the $l^2$ Decoupling Conjecture for compact hypersurfaces with positive definite second fundamental form and also for the cone. This has a wide range of important consequences. One of them is the validity of the Discrete Restriction Conjecture, which (up to $N^ε$ losses) implies the full range of expected $L^p_{x,t}$ Strichartz estimates for both classical and irrational tori. Another one is an improvement in the range for the discrete restriction theory for lattice points on the sphere. Various applications in Additive Combinatorics, Incidence Geometry and Number Theory are also discussed. Our argument relies on the interplay between linear and multilinear restriction theory.

Incidence theory and restriction estimates

We investigate the interplay between the discrete restriction phenomenon and incidence theory. Two angles are explored. One is a refinement of the machinery developed by Thomas Wolff, which when combined with a recent subcritical estimate of Bourgain leads to new Strichartz estimates for irrational tori. The other one connects various additive energies with the Szemerédi-Trotter Theorem. The combination of the two approaches recovers the best known Strichartz estimates for the classical torus in dimensions $n\ge 3$, without any appeal to number theory.

Endpoint bounds for the quartile operator

It is a result by Lacey and Thiele that the bilinear Hilbert transform maps L^{p_1}(R) \times L^{p_2}(R) into L^{p_3}(R) whenever (p_1,p_2,p_3) is a Holder tuple with p_1,p_2 > 1 and p_3>2/3. We study the behavior of the quartile operator, which is the Walsh model for the bilinear Hilbert transform, when p_3=2/3. We show that the quartile operator maps L^{p_1}(R) \times L^{p_2}(R) into L^{2/3,\infty}(R) when p_1,p_2>1 and one component is restricted to subindicator functions. As a corollary, we derive that the quartile operator maps L^{p_1}(R) \times L^{p_2,2/3}(R) into L^{2/3,\infty}(R). We also provide restricted weak-type estimates and boundedness on Orlicz-Lorentz spaces near p_1=1,p_2=2 which improve, in the Walsh case, on results of Bilyk and Grafakos, and Carro-Grafakos-Martell-Soria. Our main tool is the multi-frequency Calderón-Zygmund decomposition first used by Nazarov, Oberlin and Thiele.

Some new light on a few classical results

The purpose of this paper is to describe a unified approach to proving vector-valued inequalities without relying on the full strength of weighted theory. Our applications include the Fefferman-Stein and Cordoba-Fefferman inequalities, as well as the vector-valued Carleson operator. Using this approach we also produce a proof of the boundedness of the classical bi-parameter multiplier operators, that does not rely on product theory. Our arguments are inspired by the vector valued restricted type interpolation used in [1].

Logarithmic L^p bounds for maximal directional singular integrals in the plane

We discuss the L^p-boundedness of maximal singular integrals in the plane over a finite set V of N directions. Logarithmic bounds are established for a set V of arbitrary structure in the 2<=p<infinity range. Sharp bounds are proved for lacunary and Vargas sets of directions. The latter include the case of uniformly distributed directions and the finite truncations of the Cantor set. We make use of both classical harmonic analysis methods and product-BMO based time-frequency analysis techniques. As a further application of the latter, we derive an L^p almost orthogonality principle for Fourier restrictions to cones.

On the finite linear independence of lattice Gabor systems

In the restricted setting of product phase space lattices, we give an alternate proof of P. Linnell's theorem on the finite linear independence of lattice Gabor systems in $L^2(\mathbb R^d)$. Our proof is based on a simple argument from the spectral theory of random Schrödinger operators; in the one-dimensional setting, we recover the full strength of Linnell's result for general lattices.
