An isoperimetric inequality for Gauss--like product measures

This paper deals with various questions related to the isoperimetic problem for smooth positive measure $dμ= φ(x)dx$, with $x \in Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$. Firstly we find some necessary conditions on the density of the measure $ φ(x)$ that render the intersection of half spaces with $Ω$ a minimum in the isoperimetric problem. We then identify the unique isoperimetric set for a wide class of factorized finite measures. These results are finally used in order to get sharp inequalities in weighted Sobolev spaces and a comparison result for solutions to boundary value problems for degenerate elliptic equations.

Existence of minimizers for eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-Laplacian with a drift

This paper deals with the eigenvalue problem for the operator $L=-Δ-x\cdot \nabla $ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We are interested in proving the existence of a set minimizing any eigenvalue $λ_k$ of $L$ under a suitable measure constraint suggested by the structure of the operator. More precisely we prove that for any $c>0$ and $k\in \mathbb{N} $ the following minimization problem $$ \min\left\{λ_k(Ω): \> Ω\>\mbox{quasi-open} \>\mbox{set}, \> \int_Ωe^{|x|^2/2}dx\le c\right\} $$ has a solution.

A remark on the radial minimizer of the Ginzburg-Landau functional

Denote by $E_ε$ the Ginzburg-Landau functional in the plane and let $\tilde u_\varepsilon$ be the radial solution to the Euler equation associated to the problem $\min \left\{E_\varepsilon(u,B_1): \>\left. u\right\vert _{\partial B_{1}}=(\cos \vartheta,\sin \vartheta)\right\}$. Let $Ω\subset \R^2$ be a smooth, bounded domain with the same area as $B_1$. Denoted by $$\mathcal{K}=\left\{v=(v_1,v_2) \in H^1(Ω;\R^2):\> \int_Ωv_1\,dx=\int_Ωv_2\,dx=0,\> \int_Ω|v|^2\,dx\ge \int_{B_1} |\tilde u_\varepsilon|^2\,dx\right\},$$ we prove $$ \min_{v \in \mathcal{K}} E_\varepsilon (v,Ω)\le E_\varepsilon (\tilde u_\varepsilon,B_1). $$

An optimal Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality in Gauss space

Let $Ω$ be a smooth, convex, unbounded domain of $\R^N$. Denote by $μ_1(Ω)$ the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue of the Hermite operator in $Ω$; we prove that $μ_1(Ω) \ge 1$. The result is sharp since equality sign is achieved when $Ω$ is a $N$-dimensional strip. Our estimate can be equivalently viewed as an optimal Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality for functions belonging to the weighted Sobolev space $H^1(Ω,dγ_N)$, where $γ_N$ is the $N$-dimensional Gaussian measure.

Weighted isoperimetric inequalities in cones and applications

This paper deals with weighted isoperimetric inequalities relative to cones of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. We study the structure of measures that admit as isoperimetric sets the intersection of a cone with balls centered at the vertex of the cone. For instance, in case that the cone is the half-space $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{N}={x \in \mathbb{R}^{N} : x_{N}>0}$ and the measure is factorized, we prove that this phenomenon occurs if and only if the measure has the form $dμ=ax_{N}^{k}\exp(c|x|^{2})dx $, for some $a>0$, $k,c\geq 0$. Our results are then used to obtain isoperimetric estimates for Neumann eigenvalues of a weighted Laplace-Beltrami operator on the sphere, sharp Hardy-type inequalities for functions defined in a quarter space and, finally, via symmetrization arguments, a comparison result for a class of degenerate PDE's.

Isoperimetric estimates for the first Neumann eigenvalue of Hermite differential equations

We provide isoperimetric Szegö-Weinberger type inequalities for the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue $μ_{1}(Ω)$ in Gauss space, where $Ω$ is a possibly unbounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. Our main result consists in showing that among all sets of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ symmetric about the origin, having prescribed Gaussian measure, $μ_{1}(Ω)$ is maximum if and only if $Ω$ is the euclidean ball centered at the origin.
