A comparison between Neumann and Steklov eigenvalues

This paper is devoted to a comparison between the normalized first (non-trivial) Neumann eigenvalue $|Ω| μ_1(Ω)$ for a Lipschitz open set $Ω$ in the plane, and the normalized first (non-trivial) Steklov eigenvalue $P(Ω) σ_1(Ω)$. More precisely, we study the ratio $F(Ω):=|Ω| μ_1(Ω)/P(Ω) σ_1(Ω)$. We prove that this ratio can take arbitrarily small or large values if we do not put any restriction on the class of sets $Ω$. Then we restrict ourselves to the class of plane convex domains for which we get explicit bounds. We also study the case of thin convex domains for which we give more precise bounds. The paper finishes with the plot of the corresponding Blaschke-Santaló diagrams $(x,y)=\left(|Ω| μ_1(Ω), P(Ω) σ_1(Ω) \right)$.

A Poincaré type inequality with three constraints

In this paper, we consider a problem in calculus of variations motivated by a quantitative isoperimetric inequality in the plane. More precisely, the aim of this article is the computation of the minimum of the variational problem $$\inf_{u\in\mathcal{W}}\frac{\displaystyle\int_{-π}^π[(u')^2-u^2]dθ}{\displaystyle\left[\int_{-π}^π|u| dθ\right]^2}$$where $u\in \mathcal{W}$ is a $H^1(-π,π)$ periodic function, with zero average on $(-π,π)$ and orthogonal to sine and cosine.

Body of constant width with minimal area in a given annulus

In this paper we address the following shape optimization problem: find the planar domain of least area, among the sets with prescribed constant width and inradius. In the literature, the problem is ascribed to Bonnesen, who proposed it in \cite{BF}. In the present work, we give a complete answer to the problem, providing an explicit characterization of optimal sets for every choice of width and inradius. These optimal sets are particular Reuleaux polygons.

Asymptotic behaviour of the Steklov problem on dumbbell domains

We analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a Steklov problem in a dumbbell domain consisting of two Lipschitz sets connected by a thin tube with vanishing width. All the eigenvalues are collapsing to zero, the speed being driven by some power of the width which multiplies the eigenvalues of a one dimensional problem. In two dimensions of the space, the behaviour is fundamentally different from the third or higher dimensions and the limit problems are of different nature. This phenomenon is due to the fact that only in dimension two the boundary of the tube has not vanishing surface measure.

Maximization of the Steklov eigenvalues with a diameter constraint

In this paper, we address the problem of maximizing the Steklov eigenvalues with a diameter constraint. We provide an estimate of the Steklov eigenvalues for a convex domain in terms of its diameter and volume and we show the existence of an optimal convex domain. We establish that balls are never maximizers, even for the first non-trivial eigenvalue that contrasts with the case of volume or perimeter constraints. Under an additional regularity assumption, we are able to prove that the Steklov eigenvalue is multiple for the optimal domain. We illustrate our theoretical results by giving some optimal domains in the plane thanks to a numerical algorithm.

Shape optimization of a Dirichlet type energy for semilinear elliptic partial differential equations

Minimizing the so-called "Dirichlet energy" with respect to the domain under a volume constraint is a standard problem in shape optimization which is now well understood. This article is devoted to a prototypal non-linear version of the problem, where one aims at minimizing a Dirichlet-type energy involving the solution to a semilinear elliptic PDE with respect to the domain, under a volume constraint. One of the main differences with the standard version of this problem rests upon the fact that the criterion to minimize does not write as the minimum of an energy, and thus most of the usual tools to analyze this problem cannot be used. By using a relaxed version of this problem, we first prove the existence of optimal shapes under several assumptions on the problem parameters. We then analyze the stability of the ball, expected to be a good candidate for solving the shape optimization problem, when the coefficients of the involved PDE are radially symmetric.

Elasticae and inradius

The elastic energy of a planar convex body is defined by $E(\Om)=\frac 12\,\int\_{\partial\Om} k^2(s)\,ds$where $k(s)$ is the curvature of the boundary. In this paper we are interested in the minimization problemof $E(\Om)$ with a constraint on the inradius of $\Om$. By contrast with all the other minimization problemsinvolving this elastic energy (with a perimeter, area, diameter or circumradius constraints) for which thesolution is always the disk, we prove here that the solution of this minimization problem is not the disk and we completely characterizeit in terms of elementary functions.

A new isoperimetric inequality for the elasticae

For a smooth curve $γ$, we define its elastic energy as $E(γ)= \frac 12 \int_γ k^2 (s) ds$ where $k(s)$ is the curvature. The main purpose of the paper is to prove that among all smooth, simply connected, bounded open sets of prescribed area in $\mathbb{R}^2$, the disc has the boundary with the least elastic energy. In other words, for any bounded simply connected domain $Ω$, the following isoperimetric inequality holds: $E^2(\partial Ω)A(Ω)\geq π^3$. The analysis relies on the minimization of the elastic energy of drops enclosing a prescribed area, for which we give as well an analytic answer.

Elastic energy of a convex body

In this paper a Blaschke-Santaló diagram involving the area, the perimeter and the elastic energy of planar convex bodies is considered. More precisely we give a description of set $$\mathcal{E}:=\left\{(x,y)\in \R^2, x=\frac{4πA(Ω)}{P(Ω)^2},y=\frac{E(Ω)P(Ω)}{2π^2},\,Ω\mbox{convex} \right\},$$ where $A$ is the area, $P$ is the perimeter and $E$ is the elastic energy, that is a Willmore type energy in the plane. In order to do this, we investigate the following shape optimization problem: $$\min_{Ω\in\mathcal{C}}\{E(Ω)+μA(Ω)\},$$ where $\mathcal{C}$ is the class of convex bodies with fixed perimeter and $μ\ge 0$ is a parameter. Existence, regularity and geometric properties of solutions to this minimum problem are shown.

Existence of minimizers for eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-Laplacian with a drift

This paper deals with the eigenvalue problem for the operator $L=-Δ-x\cdot \nabla $ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We are interested in proving the existence of a set minimizing any eigenvalue $λ_k$ of $L$ under a suitable measure constraint suggested by the structure of the operator. More precisely we prove that for any $c>0$ and $k\in \mathbb{N} $ the following minimization problem $$ \min\left\{λ_k(Ω): \> Ω\>\mbox{quasi-open} \>\mbox{set}, \> \int_Ωe^{|x|^2/2}dx\le c\right\} $$ has a solution.

On the local minimizers of the Mahler volume

We focus on the analysis of local minimizers of the Mahler volume, that is to say the local solutions to the problem $$\min\{ M(K):=|K||K^\circ|\;/\;K\subset\R^d\textrm{ open and convex}, K=-K\}, $$ where $K^\circ:=\{ξ\in\R^d ; \forall x\in K, x\cdotξ<1\}$ is the polar body of $K$, and $|\cdot|$ denotes the volume in $\R^d$. According to a famous conjecture of Mahler the cube is expected to be a global minimizer for this problem. We express the Mahler volume in terms of the support functional of the convex body, which allows us to compute first and second derivatives, and leads to a concavity property of the functional. As a consequence, we prove first that any local minimizer has a Gauss curvature that vanishes at any point where it is defined. Going more deeply into the analysis in the two-dimensional case, we also prove that any local minimizer must be a parallelogram. We thereby retrieve and improve an original result of Mahler, who showed that parallelograms are global minimizers in dimension 2, and also the case of equality of Reisner, who proved that they are the only global minimizers.

On the minimization of total mean curvature

In this paper we are interested in possible extensions of an inequality due to Minkowski: $\int_{\partialΩ} H\,dA \geq \sqrt{4πA(\partialΩ)}$ valid for any regular open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$, where $H$ denotes the scalar mean curvature and $A$ the area. We prove that this inequality holds true for axisymmetric domains which are convex in the direction orthogonal to the axis of symmetry. We also show that this inequality cannot be true in more general situations. However we prove that $\int_{\partialΩ} |H|\,dA \geq \sqrt{4πA(\partialΩ)}$ remains true for any axisymmetric domain.

An optimal Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality in Gauss space

Let $Ω$ be a smooth, convex, unbounded domain of $\R^N$. Denote by $μ_1(Ω)$ the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue of the Hermite operator in $Ω$; we prove that $μ_1(Ω) \ge 1$. The result is sharp since equality sign is achieved when $Ω$ is a $N$-dimensional strip. Our estimate can be equivalently viewed as an optimal Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality for functions belonging to the weighted Sobolev space $H^1(Ω,dγ_N)$, where $γ_N$ is the $N$-dimensional Gaussian measure.

Optimal sets for a class of minimization problems with convex constraints

We look for the minimizers of the functional $\jla{\la}(\oo)=\la|\oo|-P(\oo)$ among planar convex domains constrained to lie into a given ring. We prove that, according to the values of the parameter $\la$, the solutions are either a disc or a polygon. In this last case, we describe completely the polygonal solutions by reducing the problem to a finite dimensional optimization problem. We recover classical inequalities for convex sets involving area, perimeter and inradius or circumradius and find a new one.

preprint2009arXiv

Minimization of $λ_2(Ω)$ with a perimeter constraint

We study the problem of minimizing the second Dirichlet eigenvalue for the Laplacian operator among sets of given perimeter. In two dimensions, we prove that the optimum exists, is convex, regular, and its boundary contains exactly two points where the curvature vanishes. In $N$ dimensions, we prove a more general existence theorem for a class of functionals which is decreasing with respect to set inclusion and $γ$ lower semicontinuous.

On the maximization of a class of functionals on convex regions, and the characterization of the farthest convex set

We consider a family of functionals $J$ to be maximized over the planar convex sets $K$ for which the perimeter and Steiner point have been fixed. Assuming that $J$ is the integral of a quadratic expression in the support function $h$, we show that the maximizer is always either a triangle or a line segment (which can be considered as a collapsed triangle). Among the concrete consequences of the main theorem is the fact that, given any convex body $K_1$ of finite perimeter, the set in the class we consider that is farthest away in the sense of the $L^2$ distance is always a line segment. We also prove the same property for the Hausdorff distance.

What is the optimal shape of a pipe?

We consider an incompressible fluid in a three-dimensional pipe, following the Navier-Stokes system with classical boundary conditions. We are interested in the following question: is there any optimal shape for the criterion "energy dissipated by the fluid"? Moreover, is the cylinder the optimal shape? We prove that there exists an optimal shape in a reasonable class of admissible domains, but the cylinder is not optimal. For that purpose, we explicit the first order optimality condition, thanks to adjoint state and we prove that it is impossible that the adjoint state be a solution of this over-determined system when the domain is the cylinder. At last, we show some numerical simulations for that problem.
