Broadband highly efficient nonlinear optical processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate microdisk resonators of Q-factor above 10^8

We demonstrated broadband highly efficient optical nonlinear processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate (LN) microdisk resonators. The Q factors of the micro-resonators fabricated by femtosecond laser writing and chemo-mechanical polishing are reliably above 10^8, approaching the intrinsic material absorption limit of LN. Broadband nonlinear processes, including optical parametric oscillation (OPO), second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation, and fourth harmonic generation, were observed with ultrahigh efficiencies in the same LN microdisk without introducing domain inversion, thanks to the natural quasi phase-matching and the dense spectral modes of the X-cut LN microdisk with millimeter diameter. The threshold of OPO and the absolute conversion efficiency of SHG are 19.6 microwatt and 66%, both surpass the state-of-the-art values among on-chip LN micro-resonators demonstrated so far. The broadband and highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversions achieved with the ultrahigh-Q LN microdisk resonators promise high-density integration of nonlinear photonic devices such as frequency convertors and entangled photon sources.

Diabolical Points in Coupled Active Cavities with Quantum Emitters

In single microdisks, embedded active emitters intrinsically affect the cavity mode of microdisks, which results in a trivial symmetric backscattering and a low controllability. Here we propose a macroscopical control of the backscattering direction by optimizing the cavity size. The signature of positive and negative backscattering directions in each single microdisk is confirmed with two strongly coupled microdisks. Furthermore, the diabolical points are achieved at the resonance of two microdisks, which agrees well with the theoretical calculations considering backscattering directions. The diabolical points in active optical structures pave a way to implement quantum information processing with geometric phase in quantum photonic networks.

Inverted-wedge silica resonators for controlled and stable coupling

Silica microresonators with an inverted-wedge shape were fabricated using conventional semiconductor fabrication methods. The measured quality factors of the resonators were greater than $10^6$ in 1550 nm band. Controllable coupling from under coupling, through critical coupling, to over coupling was demonstrated by horizontally moving a fiber taper while in touch with the top surface of the resonator. Thin outer ring of the resonator provided a support for the fiber taper leading to a robust stable coupling.

How to build a DNA search engine like Google?

This paper proposed a new method to build the large scale DNA sequences search system based on web search engine technology. We give a very brief introduction for the methods used in search engine first. Then how to build a DNA search system like Google is illustrated in detail. Since there is no local alignment process, this system is able to provide the ms level search services for billions of DNA sequences in a typical server.
