Suspended Fixed Points

We study the orientifold of the ${\mathcal{N}} = 1$ superconformal field theories describing D3-branes probing the Suspended Pinch Point singularity, as well as the orientifolds of non-chiral theories obtained by a specific orbifold $\mathbb{Z}_n$ of SPP. We find that these models realize a mechanism analogous to the one recently found for the orientifold of the complex Calabi-Yau cone over the Pseudo del Pezzo surface PdP$_{3c}$: they all flow to a new IR fixed point such that the value of the $a$-charge is less than half the one of the oriented theory. We also find that the value of $a$ coincides with the charge of specific orientifolds of the toric singularities $L^{(\bar{n},\bar{n},\bar{n})}$ with $\bar{n}=3n/2$ for $n$ even or $L^{(\bar{n},\bar{n}+1,\bar{n})}$ with $\bar{n}=(3n{-}1)/2$ for $n$ odd, suggesting the existence of an IR duality.

Mass Deformations of Unoriented Quiver Theories

We study the interplay between mass deformations and unoriented projections of super-conformal quiver gauge theories resulting from D3-branes at (toric) Calabi-Yau singularities. We focus on simple orbifold cases ($\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_4$) and their non-orbifold descendants. This allows us to generalize the construction rules and clarify points that have been previously overlooked. In particular we spell out the conditions of anomaly cancellations as well as super-conformal invariance that typically require the introduction of flavour branes, which in turn may spoil toric symmetry. Finally, we discuss duality cascades in this context and the interplay between Seiberg/toric duality and unoriented projection with (or without) mass deformations.

Dual Double Field Theory

We present the dual formulation of double field theory at the linearized level. This is a classically equivalent theory describing the duals of the dilaton, the Kalb-Ramond field and the graviton in a T-duality or O(D,D) covariant way. In agreement with previous proposals, the resulting theory encodes fields in mixed Young-tableau representations, combining them into an antisymmetric 4-tensor under O(D,D). In contrast to previous proposals, the theory also requires an antisymmetric 2-tensor and a singlet, which are not all pure gauge. The need for these additional fields is analogous to a similar phenomenon for "exotic" dualizations, and we clarify this by comparing with the dualizations of the component fields. We close with some speculative remarks on the significance of these observations for the full non-linear theory yet to be constructed.

Real weights, bound states and duality orbits

We show that the duality orbits of extremal black holes in supergravity theories with symmetric scalar manifolds can be derived by studying the stabilizing subalgebras of suitable representatives, realized as bound states of specific weight vectors of the corresponding representation of the duality symmetry group. The weight vectors always correspond to weights that are real, where the reality properties are derived from the Tits-Satake diagram that identifies the real form of the Lie algebra of the duality symmetry group. Both N=2 magic Maxwell-Einstein supergravities and the semisimple infinite sequences of N=2 and N=4 theories in D=4 and 5 are considered, and various results, obtained over the years in the literature using different methods, are retrieved. In particular, we show that the stratification of the orbits of these theories occurs because of very specific properties of the representations: in the case of the theory based on the real numbers, whose symmetry group is maximally non-compact and therefore all the weights are real, the stratification is due to the presence of weights of different length, while in the other cases it is due to the presence of complex weights.

Branes, Weights and Central Charges

We study the properties of half-supersymmetric branes in string theory with 32 supercharges from a purely group-theoretical point of view using the U-duality symmetry of maximal supergravity and the R-symmetry of the corresponding supersymmetry algebra. In particular, we show that half-supersymmetric branes are always associated to the longest weights of the U-duality representation of the potentials coupling to them. We compare the features of branes with three or more transverse directions (that we call "standard" branes) to those with two or less transverse directions (that we denominate "non-standard" branes). We show why the BPS condition of the non-standard branes is in general degenerate and for each case we calculate this degeneracy. We furthermore show how the orbits of multi-charge configurations of non-standard branes can be calculated and give the U-duality invariants describing these orbits. We show that different orbits of non-standard branes can have the same BPS condition.

Non-geometric orbifolds and wrapping rules

We show that the number of half-supersymmetric p-branes in the Type II theories compactified on orbifolds is determined by the wrapping rules recently introduced, provided that one accounts correctly for both geometric and non-geometric T-dual configurations. Starting from the Type II theories compactified on K3, we analyze their toroidal dimensional reductions, showing how the resulting half-supersymmetric p-branes satisfy the wrapping rules only by taking into account all the possible higher-dimensional origins. We then consider Type II theories compactified on the orbifold T^6/(Z_2 \times Z_2 ), whose massless four-dimensional theory is an N=2 supergravity. Again, the wrapping rules are obeyed only if one includes the complete orbit of the T-duality group, namely either Type IIA or Type IIB theories compactified on either the geometric or the non-geometric T-dual orbifold. Finally, we comment on the interpretation of our results in the framework of the duality between the Heterotic string compactified on K3 \times T^2 and the Type II string compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold.

Towards a classification of branes in theories with eight supercharges

We provide a classification of half-supersymmetric branes in quarter-maximal supergravity theories with scalars parametrising coset manifolds. Guided by the results previously obtained for the half-maximal theories, we are able to show that half-supersymmetric branes correspond to the real longest weights of the representations of the brane charges, where the reality properties of the weights are determined from the Tits-Satake diagrams associated to the global symmetry groups. We show that the resulting brane structure is universal for all theories that can be uplifted to six dimensions. We also show that when viewing these theories as low-energy theories for the suitably compactified heterotic string, the classification we obtain is in perfect agreement with the wrapping rules derived in previous works for the same theory compactified on tori. Finally, we relate the branes to the R-symmetry representations of the central charges and we show that in general the degeneracies of the BPS conditions are twice those of the half-maximal theories and four times those of the maximal ones.

Brane orbits

We complete the classification of half-supersymmetric branes in toroidally compactified IIA/IIB string theory in terms of representations of the T-duality group. As a by-product we derive a last wrapping rule for the space-filling branes. We find examples of T-duality representations of branes in lower dimensions, suggested by supergravity, of which none of the component branes follow from the reduction of any brane in ten-dimensional IIA/IIB string theory. We discuss the constraints on the charges of half-supersymmetric branes, determining the corresponding T-duality and U-duality orbits.

Heterotic wrapping rules

We show that the same wrapping rules that have been derived for the branes of IIA and IIB string theory also apply to the branes of the toroidally compactified heterotic string theory. Moreover, we show that applying these wrapping rules to the IIA theory compactified over K3 is consistent with the well-known duality between the heterotic string theory compactified over T^4 and the IIA string theory compactified over K3. We derive a simple rule that relates, in any dimension, the T-duality representation of the branes of the toroidally compactified heterotic theory to the relevant R-symmetry representation of the central charges in the supersymmetry algebra. We show that, in the general case, the degeneracy of the BPS conditions of the heterotic branes is twice as large as that of the branes of IIA and IIB string theory.

Supersymmetric Domain Walls

We classify the half-supersymmetric "domain walls", i.e. branes of codimension one, in toroidally compactified IIA/IIB string theory and show to which gauged supergravity theory each of these domain walls belong. We use as input the requirement of supersymmetric Wess-Zumino terms, the properties of the E11 Kac-Moody algebra and the embedding tensor formalism. We show that the number of half-supersymmetric domain walls is a multiple of the number of corresponding central charges in the supersymmetry algebra, where the multiplicity is related to the degeneracy of the BPS conditions.

Dual doubled geometry

We probe doubled geometry with dual fundamental branes, i.e. solitons. Restricting ourselves first to solitonic branes with more than two transverse directions we find that the doubled geometry requires an effective wrapping rule for the solitonic branes which is dual to the wrapping rule for fundamental branes. This dual wrapping rule can be understood by the presence of Kaluza-Klein monopoles. Extending our analysis to supersymmetric solitonic branes with less than or equal to two transverse directions we show that such solitons are precisely obtained by applying the same dual wrapping rule to these cases as well. This extended wrapping rule can not be explained by the standard Kaluza-Klein monopole alone. Instead, it suggests the existence of a class of generalized Kaluza-Klein monopoles in ten-dimensional string theory.

Exceptional Reductions

Starting from basic identities of the group E8, we perform progressive reductions, namely decompositions with respect to the maximal and symmetric embeddings of E7xSU(2) and then of E6xU(1). This procedure provides a systematic approach to the basic identities involving invariant primitive tensor structures of various irreprs. of finite-dimensional exceptional Lie groups. We derive novel identities for E7 and E6, highlighting the E8 origin of some well known ones. In order to elucidate the connections of this formalism to four-dimensional Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theories based on symmetric scalar manifolds (and related to irreducible Euclidean Jordan algebras, the unique exception being the triality-symmetric N = 2 stu model), we then derive a fundamental identity involving the unique rank-4 symmetric invariant tensor of the 0-brane charge symplectic irrepr. of U-duality groups, with potential applications in the quantization of the charge orbits of supergravity theories, as well as in the study of multi-center black hole solutions therein.

String Solitons and T-duality

We construct for arbitrary dimensions a universal T-duality covariant expression for the Wess-Zumino terms of supersymmetric String Solitons in toroidally compactified string theories with 32 supercharges. The worldvolume fields occurring in the effective action of these String Solitons form either a vector or a tensor multiplet with 16 supercharges. We determine the dimensions of the conjugacy classes under T-duality to which these String Solitons belong. We do this in two steps. First, we determine the T-duality representations of the $p$-forms of maximal supergravities that contain the potentials that couple to these String Solitons. We find that these are p-forms, with D-4\le p\le 6 if D \ge 6 and with D-4\le p\le D if D < 6, transforming in the antisymmetric representation of rank m=p+4-D\le 4 of the T-duality symmetry SO(10-D,10-D). All branes support vector multiplets except when m=10-D. In that case the T-duality representation splits, for D<10, into a selfdual and anti-selfdual part, corresponding to 5-branes supporting either a vector or a tensor multiplet. In a second step we show that only certain well-defined lightlike directions in the anti-symmetric tensor representations of the T-duality group correspond to supersymmetric String Solitons. These lightlike directions define the conjugacy classes. As a by-product we show how by a straightforward procedure all solitonic fields of maximal supergravity are derived using the Kac-Moody algebra E(11).

The D-brane U-scan

We consider the D-branes that occur in IIA/IIB string theory compactified on a torus. We review how a general expression for the Wess-Zumino term of such branes is derived. We also review the method to determine the D-brane Wess-Zumino term in a U-duality covariant way, and we apply it to derive all the branes obtained by transforming the D-branes under U-duality in any dimension above five. We finally determine all the supersymmetric branes supporting worldvolume tensor multiplets that occur in these theories in any dimension.

D-Brane Wess-Zumino Terms and U-Duality

We construct gauge-invariant and U-duality covariant expressions for Wess-Zumino terms corresponding to general Dp-branes (for any p<D) in arbitrary 2<D<11 dimensions. A distinguishing feature of these Wess-Zumino terms is that they contain twice as many scalars as the 10-D compactified dimensions, in line with doubled geometry. We find that for D<10 the charges of the higher-dimensional branes can all be expressed as products of the 0-brane charges, which include the D0-brane and the NS-NS 0-brane charges. We give the general expressions for these charges and show how they determine the non-trivial conjugacy class to which some of the higher-dimensional D-branes belong.

Local E(11) and the gauging of the trombone symmetry

In any dimension, the positive level generators of the very-extended Kac-Moody algebra $E_{11}$ with completely antisymmetric spacetime indices are associated to the form fields of the corresponding maximal supergravity. We consider the local $E_{11}$ algebra, that is the algebra obtained enlarging these generators of $E_{11}$ in such a way that the global $E_{11}$ symmetries are promoted to gauge symmetries. These are the gauge symmetries of the corresponding massless maximal supergravity. We show the existence of a new type of deformation of the local $E_{11}$ algebra, which corresponds to the gauging of the symmetry under rescaling of the fields. In particular, we show how the gauged IIA theory of Howe, Lambert and West is obtained from an eleven-dimensional group element that only depends on the eleventh coordinate via a linear rescaling. We then show how this results in ten dimensions in a deformed local $E_{11}$ algebra of a new type.

preprint2010arXiv

The very-extended trombone

Starting from the very-extended Kac-Moody algebra $E_{11}$, we consider the algebra $E_{11,D}^{local}$, obtained by adding to the non-negative level $E_{11}$ generators the $D$-dimensional momentum operator and an infinite set of additional generators that promote the global $E_{11}$ symmetries to gauge ones. We determine all the possible trombone deformations of this algebra, that is the deformations that involve the $D$-dimensional scaling operator. The Jacobi identities imply that such deformations are uniquely determined by a single tensor belonging to the same representation of the internal symmetry group as the vector generators and satisfying additional quadratic constraints. The non-linear realisation of the deformed algebra gives the field strengths of the theory which are those of any possible maximal supergravity theory in which the global scaling symmetry is gauged in any dimension. All the possible deformed algebras are in one to one correspondence with all such maximal supergravity theories. The tensor that parametrises the deformation is identified with the embedding tensor that is used to parametrise all maximal supergravity theories with gauged scaling symmetry, and the quadratic constraints that we determine exactly coincide with the field theory results.

E(11)-extended spacetime and gauged supergravities

We formulate all the five dimensional gauged maximal supergravity theories as non-linear realisations of the semi-direct product of E_{11} and a set of generators which transform according to the first fundamental representation l of E_{11}. The latter introduces a generalised space-time which plays a crucial role for these theories. We derive the E_{11} and l transformations of all the form fields and their dynamics. We also formulate the five dimensional gauged supergravity theories using the closure of the supersymmetry algebra. We show that this closes on the bosonic field content predicted by E_{11} and we derive the field transformations and the dynamics of this theory. The results are in precise agreement with those found from the E_{11} formulation. This provides a very detailed check of E_{11} and also the first substantial evidence for the generalised space-time. The results can be generalised to all gauged maximal supergravities, thus providing a unified framework of all these theories as part of E_{11}.

Real forms of very extended Kac-Moody algebras and theories with eight supersymmetries

We consider all theories with eight supersymmetries whose reduction to three dimensions gives rise to scalars that parametrise symmetric manifolds. We conjecture that these theories are non-linear realisations of very-extended Kac-Moody algebras for suitable choices of real forms. We show for the most interesting cases that the bosonic sector of the supersymmetric theory is precisely reproduced by the corresponding non-linear realisation.

SL(2,R)-invariant IIB Brane Actions

We give a universal SL(2,R)-invariant expression for all IIB p-brane actions with p=-1,1,3,5,7,9. The Wess-Zumino terms in the brane actions are determined by requiring (i) target space gauge invariance and (ii) the presence of a single Born-Infeld vector. We find that for p=7 (p=9) brane actions with these properties only exist for orbits that contain the standard D7-brane (D9-brane). We comment about the actions for the other orbits.

Massive higher spins and holography

We review recent progress towards the understanding of higher spin gauge symmetry breaking in AdS space from a holographic vantage point. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, N=4 SYM theory at vanishing coupling constant should be dual to a theory in AdS which exhibits higher spin gauge symmetry enhancement. When the SYM coupling is non-zero, all but a handful of HS currents are violated by anomalies, and correspondingly local higher spin symmetry in the bulk gets spontaneously broken. In agreement with previous results and holographic expectations, we find that, barring one notable exception (spin 1 eating spin 0), the Goldstone modes responsible for HS symmetry breaking in AdS have non-vanishing mass even in the limit in which the gauge symmetry is restored. We show that spontaneous breaking a' la Stueckelberg implies that the mass of the relevant spin s'=s-1 Goldstone field is exactly the one predicted by the correspondence.

On the fermionic Grande Bouffe: more on higher spin symmetry breaking in AdS/CFT

We discuss fermionic higher spin gauge symmetry breaking in AdS space from a holographic perspective. Analogously to the recently discussed bosonic case, the higher spin Goldstino mode responsible for the symmetry breaking has a non-vanishing mass in the limit in which the gauge symmetry is restored. This result is precisely in agreement with the AdS/CFT correspondence, which implies that N=4 SYM at vanishing coupling constant is dual to a theory in AdS which exhibits higher spin gauge symmetry enhancement. When the SYM coupling is non-zero, the current conservation condition becomes anomalous, and correspondingly the local higher spin symmetry in the bulk gets spontaneously broken. We also show that the mass of the Goldstino mode is exactly the one predicted by the correspondence. Finally, we obtain the form of a class of fermionic higher spin currents in the SYM side.

Truncations of the D9-brane action and type-I strings

The low-energy effective action of type-I superstring theory in ten dimensions is obtained performing a truncation of type-IIB supergravity in a background where D9-branes are present. The open sector corresponds to the first order in the low-energy expansion of the D9-brane action in a type-I background. In hep-th/9901055 it was shown that there are two ways of performing a type-I truncation of the D9-brane action, and the resulting truncated action was obtained in a flat background. We extend this result to a generic type-I background, and argue that the two different truncations are in correspondence with the open sector of the low-energy effective action of the two different consistent ten-dimensional type-I string theories, namely the SO(32) superstring and the $USp(32)$ non-supersymmetric string.
