Lense-Thirring Acoustic Black Holes : Shadows and Light

We introduce the Lense-Thirring Acoustic Black Hole (LTABH), motivated by the relevance of analogue models for black holes embedded in various physical systems, such as the cosmological microwave background or quantum superfluids. We investigate the LTABH spacetime geometry, showing that the roots of the metric function determine a partition of the spacetime into four regions, depending on the acoustic parameter $ξ$ (whereas the dependence vanishes for the rotation parameter $a$); on the other hand, the parameter $a$ turns out to affect the critical radii associated to the maxima of the effective potential. All in all, both the acoustic sphere radius $r_{as}$ and the photon sphere radius $r_{ps}$, respectively giving rise to the acoustic shadow $R_{as}$ and to the optical shadow $R_{s}$, depend on $ξ$ and $a$. More precisely, the rotation parameter $a$ is more relevantly affecting $R_{s}$ (through a right shift), while $R_{as}$ retains its circular shape. For what concerns the acoustic parameter, we notice that the higher $ξ$ is, the larger the size of both shadows. All of these results are confirmed through a detailed analysis of the distortions and of the shadows radii. Moreover, by deriving the magnitude of the precession frequency $Ω$, we observe that it significantly increases near the acoustic horizons, both in the extremal and in the non-extremal cases, which implies that the Lense-Thirring (frame dragging) effect, which can be traced back to $ξ$ itself, becomes important near such regions. On the other hand, we also show that there are regions of the LTABH spacetime in which $% Ω$ vanishes, suggesting that therein possible probe particles would not be affected by the frame dragging at all. Finally, we derive the deflection of the light near the LTABH.

Kac-Moody Algebras on Soft Group Manifolds

Within the so-called group geometric approach to (super)gravity and (super)string theories, any compact Lie group manifold $G_{c}$ can be smoothly deformed into a group manifold $G_{c}^{μ}$ (locally diffeomorphic to $G_{c}$ itself), which is `soft', namely, based on a non-left-invariant, intrinsic one-form Vielbein $μ$, which violates the Maurer-Cartan equations and consequently has a non-vanishing associated curvature two-form. Within the framework based on the above deformation (`softening'), we show how to construct an infinite-dimensional (infinite-rank), generalized Kac-Moody (KM) algebra associated to $G_{c}^{μ}$, starting from the generalized KM algebras associated to $G_{c}$. As an application, we consider KM algebras associated to deformed manifolds such as the `soft' circle, the `soft' two-sphere and the `soft' three-sphere. While the generalized KM algebra associated to the deformed circle is trivially isomorphic to its undeformed analogue, and hence not new, the `softening' of the two- and three- sphere includes squashed manifolds (and in particular, the so-called Berger three-sphere) and yields to non-trivial results.

New perspectives in Kac-Moody algebras associated to higher dimensional manifolds

In this review, we present a general framework for the construction of Kac-Moody (KM) algebras associated to higher-dimensional manifolds. Starting from the classical case of loop algebras on the circle $\mathbb{S}^{1}$, we extend the approach to compact and non-compact group manifolds, coset spaces, and soft deformations thereof. After recalling the necessary geometric background on Riemannian manifolds, Hilbert bases and Killing vectors, we present the construction of generalized current algebras $\mathfrak{g}(\mathcal{M})$, their semidirect extensions with isometry algebras, and their central extensions. We show how the resulting algebras are controlled by the structure of the underlying manifold, and illustrate the framework through explicit realizations on $SU(2)$, $SU(2)/U(1)$, and higher-dimensional spheres, highlighting their relation to Virasoro-like algebras. We also discuss the compatibility conditions for cocycles, the role of harmonic analysis, and some applications in higher-dimensional field theory and supergravity compactifications. This provides a unifying perspective on KM algebras beyond one-dimensional settings, paving the way for further exploration of their mathematical and physical implications.

Black hole attractors and U(1) Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings: analysis and classification

We classify the critical points of the effective black hole potential which governs the attractor mechanism taking place at the horizon of static dyonic extremal black holes in $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=4$ Maxwell-Einstein supergravity with $U(1)$ Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings. We use a manifestly symplectic covariant formalism, and we consider both spherical and hyperbolic horizons, recognizing the relevant sub-classes to which some representative examples belong. We also exploit projective special Kähler geometry of vector multiplets scalar manifolds, the $U$-duality-invariant quartic structure (and 2-polarizations thereof) in order to retrieve and generalize various expressions of the entropy of asymptotically AdS$_{4}$ BPS black holes, in the cases in which the scalar manifolds are symmetric spaces. Finally, we present a novel static extremal black hole solution to the $STU$ model, in which the dilaton interpolates between an hyperbolic near-horizon geometry and AdS$_{4}$ at infinity.

Classification of four-rebit states

We classify states of four rebits, that is, we classify the orbits of the group $\widehat{G}(\mathbb R) = \mathrm{\mathop{SL}}(2,\mathbb R)^4$ in the space $(\mathbb R^2)^{\otimes 4}$. This is the real analogon of the well-known SLOCC operations in quantum information theory. By constructing the $\widehat{G}(\mathbb R)$-module $(\mathbb R^2)^{\otimes 4}$ via a $\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z$-grading of the simple split real Lie algebra of type $D_4$, the orbits are divided into three groups: semisimple, nilpotent and mixed. The nilpotent orbits have been classified in Dietrich et al. (2017), yielding applications in theoretical physics (extremal black holes in the STU model of $\mathcal{N}=2, D=4$ supergravity, see Ruggeri and Trigiante (2017)). Here we focus on the semisimple and mixed orbits which we classify with recently developed methods based on Galois cohomology, see Borovoi et al. (2021). These orbits are relevant to the classification of non-extremal (or extremal over-rotating) and two-center extremal black hole solutions in the STU model.

Conjugation Matters. Bioctonionic Veronese Vectors and Cayley-Rosenfeld Planes

Motivated by the recent interest in Lie algebraic and geometric structures arising from tensor products of division algebras and their relevance to high energy theoretical physics, we analyze generalized bioctonionic projective and hyperbolic planes. After giving a Veronese representation of the complexification of the Cayley plane $\mathbb{O}P_{\mathbb{C}}^{2}$, we present a novel, explicit construction of the bioctonionic Cayley-Rosenfeld plane $\left( \mathbb{C}\otimes \mathbb{O}\right) P^{2}$, again by exploiting Veronese coordinates. We discuss the isometry groups of all generalized bioctonionic planes, recovering all complex and real forms of the exceptional groups $F_{4}$ and $E_{6}$, and characterizing such planes as symmetric and Hermitian symmetric spaces. We conclude by discussing some possible physical applications.

Deformation of the Okubic Albert algebra and its relation to the Okubic affine and projective planes

We present a deformation of the Okubic Albert algebra introduced by Elduque whose rank-1 idempotent elements are in biunivocal correspondence with points of the Okubic projective plane, thus extending to Okubic algebras the correspondence found by Jordan, Von Neumann, Wigner between the octonionic projective plane and the rank-3 Exceptional Jordan Algebra.

Non-BPS Black Branes in M-theory over Calabi-Yau Threefolds

[abridged version] We study extremal solutions arising in M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds, focussing on non-BPS attractors for their importance in relation to the Weak Gravity Conjecture. In the low-energy/field theory limit one obtains minimal N=2, D=5 supergravity coupled to Abelian vector multiplets. By making use of the effective black hole potential formalism with Lagrange multipliers and of the Attractor Mechanism, and focussing on two-moduli complete intersection (CICY) or toric hypersurface (THCY) Calabi-Yau threefolds, we investigate the possible non-uniqueness of the attractor solutions, as well as the stability of non-BPS black holes and black strings. In all models taken into consideration, we find that both BPS and non-BPS extremal black hole attractors are always unique for a given, supporting electric charge configuration; moreover, non-BPS black holes are always unstable, and thus they decay into constituent BPS/anti-BPS pairs. For what concerns extremal black strings, we confirm uniqueness also for non-BPS strings in two-moduli CICY models. On the other hand, we discover multiple non-BPS extremal black string attractors (with different tensions) in most of the two-moduli THCY models, and we determine the corresponding magnetic configurations supporting them; this indicates the existence of volume-minimizing representatives in the same homology class having different values of their local minimal volume. Moreover, we find that non-BPS black strings, both for single and multiple solutions, are stable and thus enjoy recombination of their constituent BPS/anti-BPS pairs.

Octonionic Planes and Real Forms of G2, F4 and E6

In this work we present a useful way to introduce the octonionic projective and hyperbolic plane through the use of Veronese vectors. Then we focus on their relation with the exceptional Jordan algebra and show that the Veronese vectors are the rank-one elements of the algebra. We then study groups of motions over the octonionic plane recovering all real forms of G2, F4and E6 groups and finally give a classification of all octonionic and split-octonionic planes as symmetric spaces.

Spontaneous scalarization in (A)dS gravity at zero temperature

We study spontaneous scalarization of electrically charged extremal black holes in $D\geq 4$ spacetime dimensions. Such a phenomenon is caused by the symmetry breaking due to quartic interactions of the scalar -- Higgs potential and Stueckelberg interaction with electromagnetic and gravitational fields, characterized by the couplings $a$ and $b$, respectively. We use the entropy representation of the states in the vicinity of the horizon, apply the inverse attractor mechanism for the scalar field, and analyze analytically the thermodynamic stability of the system using the laws of thermodynamics. As a result, we obtain that the scalar field condensates on the horizon only in spacetimes which are asymptotically non-flat, $Λ\neq 0$ (dS or AdS), and whose extremal black holes have non-planar horizons $k=\pm 1$, provided that the mass $m$ of the scalar field belongs to a mass interval (area code) different for each set of the boundary conditions specified by $(Λ,k)$. A process of scalarization describes a second order phase transition of the black hole, from the extremal Reissner-Nordström (A)dS one, to the corresponding extremal hairy one. Furthermore, for the transition to happen, the interaction has to be strong enough, and all physical quantities on the horizon depend at most on the effective Higgs-Stueckelberg interaction $am^2-2b$. Most of our results are general, valid for any parameter and any spacetime dimension.

Warm Dark Matter from Higher-Dimensional Gauge Theories

Warm dark matter particles with masses in the keV range have been linked with the large group representations in gauge theories through a high number of species at decoupling. In this paper, we address WDM fermionic degrees of freedom from such representations. Bridging higher-dimensional particle physics theories with cosmology studies and astrophysical observations, our approach is two-folded, i.e., it includes realistic models from higher-dimensional representations and constraints from simulations tested against observations. Starting with superalgebras in exceptional periodicity theories, we discuss several symmetry reductions and we consider several representations that accommodate a high number of degrees of freedom. We isolate a model that naturally accommodates both the standard model representation and the fermionic dark matter in agreement with both large and small-scale constraints. This model considers an intersection of branes in $D=27+3$ in a manner that provides the degrees of freedom for the standard model on one hand and 2048 fermionic degrees of freedom for dark matter, corresponding to a $\sim$2 keV particle mass, on the other. In this context, we discuss the theoretical implications and the observable predictions.

Classification of four qubit states and their stabilisers under SLOCC operations

We classify four qubit states under SLOCC operations, that is, we classify the orbits of the group $\mathrm{\mathop{SL}}(2,\mathbb{C})^4$ on the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_4 = (\mathbb{C}^2)^{\otimes 4}$. We approach the classification by realising this representation as a symmetric space of maximal rank. We first describe general methods for classifying the orbits of such a space. We then apply these methods to obtain the orbits in our special case, resulting in a complete and irredundant classification of $\mathrm{\mathop{SL}}(2,\mathbb{C})^4$-orbits on $\mathcal{H}_4$. It follows that an element of $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{\otimes 4}$ is conjugate to an element of precisely 87 classes of elements. Each of these classes either consists of one element or of a parametrised family of elements, and the elements in the same class all have equal stabiliser in $\mathrm{\mathop{SL}}(2,\mathbb{C})^4$. We also present a complete and irredundant classification of elements and stabilisers up to the action of ${\rm Sym}_4\ltimes\mathrm{\mathop{SL}}(2,\mathbb{C})^4$ where ${\rm Sym}_4$ permutes the four tensor factors of $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{\otimes 4}$.

Exceptional Super Yang-Mills in $D=27+3$ and Worldvolume M-Theory

Bars and Sezgin have proposed a super Yang-Mills theory in $D=s+t=11+3$ space-time dimensions with an electric 3-brane that generalizes the 2-brane of M-theory. More recently, the authors found an infinite family of exceptional super Yang-Mills theories in $D=(8n+3)+3$ via the so-called Magic Star algebras. A particularly interesting case occurs in signature $D=27+3$, where the superalgebra is centrally extended by an electric 11-brane and its 15-brane magnetic dual. The worldvolume symmetry of the 11-brane has signature $D=11+3$ and can reproduce super Yang-Mills theory in $D=11+3$. Upon reduction to $D=26+2$, the 11-brane reduces to a 10-brane with $10+2$ worldvolume signature. A single time projection gives a $10+1$ worldvolume signature and can serve as a model for $D=10+1$ M-theory as a reduction from the $D=26+1$ signature of the bosonic M-theory of Horowitz and Susskind; this is further confirmed by the reduction of chiral $(1,0)$, $D=11+3$ superalgebra to the $\mathcal{N}=1$ superalgebra in $D=10+1$, as found by Rudychev, Sezgin and Sundell some time ago. Extending previous results of Dijkgraaf, Verlinde and Verlinde, we also put forward the realization of spinors as total cohomologies of (the largest spatially extended) branes which centrally extend the $(1,0)$ superalgebra underlying the corresponding exceptional super Yang-Mills theory. Moreover, by making use of an "anomalous" Dynkin embedding, we strengthen Ramond and Sati's argument that M-theory has hidden Cayley plane fibers.

Jordan Algebraic Interpretation of Maximal Parabolic Subalgebras : Exceptional Lie Algebras

With this paper we start a programme aiming at connecting two vast scientific areas: Jordan algebras and representation theory. Within representation theory, we focus on non-compact, real forms of semisimple Lie algebras and groups as well as on the modern theory of their induced representations, in which a central role is played by the parabolic subalgebras and subgroups. The aim of the present paper and its sequels is to present a Jordan algebraic interpretations of maximal parabolic subalgebras. In this first paper, we confine ourselves to maximal parabolic subalgebras of the non-compact real forms of finite-dimensional exceptional Lie algebras, in particular focusing on Jordan algebras of rank 2 and 3.

Orbits in Non-Supersymmetric Magic Theories

We determine and classify the electric-magnetic duality orbits of fluxes supporting asymptotically flat, extremal black branes in $D=4,5,6$ space-time dimensions in the so-called non-supersymmetric magic Maxwell-Einstein theories, which are consistent truncations of maximal supergravity and which can be related to Jordan algebras (and related Freudenthal triple systems) over the split complex numbers $\mathbb{C}_{s}$ and the split quaternions $\mathbb{H}_{s}$. By studying the stabilizing subalgebras of suitable representatives, realized as bound states of specific weight vectors of the corresponding representation of the electric-magnetic duality symmetry group, we obtain that, as for the case of maximal supergravity, in magic non-supersymmetric Maxwell-Einstein theories there is no splitting of orbits, namely there is only one orbit for each non-maximal rank element of the relevant Jordan algebra (in $D=5$ and $6$) or of the relevant Freudenthal triple system (in $D=4$).

BPS black holes in a non-homogeneous deformation of the stu model of $N=2$, $D=4$ gauged supergravity

We consider a deformation of the well-known stu model of $N=2$, $D=4$ supergravity, characterized by a non-homogeneous special Kähler manifold, and by the smallest electric-magnetic duality Lie algebra consistent with its upliftability to five dimensions. We explicitly solve the BPS attractor equations and construct static supersymmetric black holes with radial symmetry, in the context of $\text{U}(1)$ dyonic Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging, focussing on axion-free solutions. Due to non-homogeneity of the scalar manifold, the model evades the analysis recently given in the literature. The relevant physical properties of the resulting black hole solution are discussed.

Freudenthal Duality in Gravity: from Groups of Type E7 to Pre-Homogeneous Spaces

Freudenthal duality can be defined as an anti-involutive, non-linear map acting on symplectic spaces. It was introduced in four-dimensional Maxwell-Einstein theories coupled to a non-linear sigma model of scalar fields. In this short review, I will consider its relation to the U-duality Lie groups of type E7 in extended supergravity theories, and comment on the relation between the Hessian of the black hole entropy and the pseudo-Euclidean, rigid special (pseudo)Kaehler metric of the pre-homogeneous spaces associated to the U-orbits.

Majorana Fermions, Supersymmetry Breaking, and Born-Infeld Theory

This review is devoted to highlight some aspects of the relevance of Majorana fermions in rigid supersymmetry breaking in four spacetime dimensions. After introducing some basic facts on spinors, and on their symmetries and reality properties, we consider Goldstino actions describing partial breaking of rigid supersymmetry, then focussing on Born-Infeld non-linear theory, its duality symmetry, and its supersymmetric extensions, also including multi-field generalizations exhibiting doubly self-duality.

Real weights, bound states and duality orbits

We show that the duality orbits of extremal black holes in supergravity theories with symmetric scalar manifolds can be derived by studying the stabilizing subalgebras of suitable representatives, realized as bound states of specific weight vectors of the corresponding representation of the duality symmetry group. The weight vectors always correspond to weights that are real, where the reality properties are derived from the Tits-Satake diagram that identifies the real form of the Lie algebra of the duality symmetry group. Both N=2 magic Maxwell-Einstein supergravities and the semisimple infinite sequences of N=2 and N=4 theories in D=4 and 5 are considered, and various results, obtained over the years in the literature using different methods, are retrieved. In particular, we show that the stratification of the orbits of these theories occurs because of very specific properties of the representations: in the case of the theory based on the real numbers, whose symmetry group is maximally non-compact and therefore all the weights are real, the stratification is due to the presence of weights of different length, while in the other cases it is due to the presence of complex weights.

Exceptional Lie Algebras, SU(3) and Jordan Pairs Part 2: Zorn-type Representations

A representation of the exceptional Lie algebras is presented. It reflects a simple unifying view and it is realized in terms of Zorn-type matrices. The role of the underlying Jordan pair and Jordan algebra content is crucial in the development of the structure. Each algebra contains three Jordan pairs sharing the same Lie algebra of automorphisms and the same external su(3) symmetry. Applications in physics are outlined.

Iwasawa nilpotency degree of non compact symmetric cosets in N-extended Supergravity

We analyze the polynomial part of the Iwasawa realization of the coset representative of non compact symmetric Riemannian spaces. We start by studying the role of Kostant's principal SU(2)_P subalgebra of simple Lie algebras, and how it determines the structure of the nilpotent subalgebras. This allows us to compute the maximal degree of the polynomials for all faithful representations of Lie algebras. In particular the metric coefficients are related to the scalar kinetic terms while the representation of electric and magnetic charges is related to the coupling of scalars to vector field strengths as they appear in the Lagrangian. We consider symmetric scalar manifolds in N-extended supergravity in various space-time dimensions, elucidating various relations with the underlying Jordan algebras and normed Hurwitz algebras. For magic supergravity theories, our results are consistent with the Tits-Satake projection of symmetric spaces and the nilpotency degree turns out to depend only on the space-time dimension of the theory. These results should be helpful within a deeper investigation of the corresponding supergravity theory, e.g. in studying ultraviolet properties of maximal supergravity in various dimensions.

No Fermionic Wigs for BPS Attractors in 5 Dimensions

We analyze the fermionic wigging of 1/2-BPS (electric) extremal black hole attractors in N=2, D=5 ungauged Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theories, by exploiting anti-Killing spinors supersymmetry transformations. Regardless of the specific data of the real special geometry of the manifold defining the scalars of the vector multiplets, and differently from the D=4 case, we find that there are no corrections for the near--horizon attractor value of the scalar fields; an analogous result also holds for 1/2-BPS (magnetic) extremal black string. Thus, the attractor mechanism receives no fermionic corrections in D=5 (at least in the BPS sector).

Symplectic Deformations of Gauged Maximal Supergravity

We identify the space of symplectic deformations of maximal gauged supergravity theories. Coordinates of such space parametrize inequivalent supergravity models with the same gauge group. We apply our procedure to the SO(8) gauging, extending recent analyses. We also study other interesting cases, including Cremmer-Scherk-Schwarz models and gaugings of groups contained in SL(8,R) and in SU*(8).

Dualities Near the Horizon

In 4-dimensional supergravity theories, covariant under symplectic electric-magnetic duality rotations, a significant role is played by the symplectic matrix M(ϕ), related to the coupling of scalars ϕ to vector field-strengths. In particular, this matrix enters the twisted self-duality condition for 2-form field strengths in the symplectic formulation of generalized Maxwell equations in the presence of scalar fields. In this investigation, we compute several properties of this matrix in relation to the attractor mechanism of extremal (asymptotically flat) black holes. At the attractor points with no flat directions (as in the N = 2 BPS case), this matrix enjoys a universal form in terms of the dyonic charge vector Q and the invariants of the corresponding symplectic representation RQ of the duality group G, whenever the scalar manifold is a symmetric space with G simple and non-degenerate of type E7. At attractors with flat directions, M still depends on flat directions, but not MQ, defining the so-called Freudenthal dual of Q itself. This allows for a universal expression of the symplectic vector field strengths in terms of Q, in the near-horizon Bertotti-Robinson black hole geometry.

Freudenthal Gauge Theory

We present a novel gauge field theory, based on the Freudenthal Triple System (FTS), a ternary algebra with mixed symmetry (not completely symmetric) structure constants. The theory, named Freudenthal Gauge Theory (FGT), is invariant under two (off-shell) symmetries: the gauge Lie algebra constructed from the FTS triple product and a novel global non-polynomial symmetry, the so-called Freudenthal duality. Interestingly, a broad class of FGT gauge algebras is provided by the Lie algebras "of type e7" which occur as conformal symmetries of Euclidean Jordan algebras of rank 3, and as U-duality algebras of the corresponding (super)gravity theories in D = 4. We prove a No-Go Theorem, stating the incompatibility of the invariance under Freudenthal duality and the coupling to space-time vector and/or spinor fields, thus forbidding non-trivial supersymmetric extensions of FGT. We also briefly discuss the relation between FTS and the triple systems occurring in BLG-type theories, in particular focusing on superconformal Chern-Simons-matter gauge theories in D = 3.

Jordan Pairs, E6 and U-Duality in Five Dimensions

By exploiting the Jordan pair structure of U-duality Lie algebras in D = 3 and the relation to the super-Ehlers symmetry in D = 5, we elucidate the massless multiplet structure of the spectrum of a broad class of D = 5 supergravity theories. Both simple and semi-simple, Euclidean rank-3 Jordan algebras are considered. Theories sharing the same bosonic sector but with different supersymmetrizations are also analyzed.

Adams-Iwasawa N=8 Black Holes

We study some of the properties of the geometry of the exceptional Lie group E7(7), which describes the U-duality of the N=8, d=4 supergravity. In particular, based on a symplectic construction of the Lie algebra e7(7) due to Adams, we compute the Iwasawa decomposition of the symmetric space M=E7(7)/(SU(8)/Z_2), which gives the vector multiplets' scalar manifold of the corresponding supergravity theory. The explicit expression of the Lie algebra is then used to analyze the origin of M as scalar configuration of the "large" 1/8-BPS extremal black hole attractors. In this framework it turns out that the U(1) symmetry spanning such attractors is broken down to a discrete subgroup Z_4, spoiling their dyonic nature near the origin of the scalar manifold. This is a consequence of the fact that the maximal manifest off-shell symmetry of the Iwasawa parametrization is determined by a completely non-compact Cartan subalgebra of the maximal subgroup SL(8,R) of E7(7), which breaks down the maximal possible covariance SL(8,R) to a smaller SL(7,R) subgroup. These results are compared with the ones obtained in other known bases, such as the Sezgin-van Nieuwenhuizen and the Cremmer-Julia /de Wit-Nicolai frames.

Brane orbits

We complete the classification of half-supersymmetric branes in toroidally compactified IIA/IIB string theory in terms of representations of the T-duality group. As a by-product we derive a last wrapping rule for the space-filling branes. We find examples of T-duality representations of branes in lower dimensions, suggested by supergravity, of which none of the component branes follow from the reduction of any brane in ten-dimensional IIA/IIB string theory. We discuss the constraints on the charges of half-supersymmetric branes, determining the corresponding T-duality and U-duality orbits.

d-Geometries Revisited

We analyze some properties of the four dimensional supergravity theories which originate from five dimensions upon reduction. They generalize to N>2 extended supersymmetries the d-geometries with cubic prepotentials, familiar from N=2 special Kähler geometry. We emphasize the role of a suitable parametrization of the scalar fields and the corresponding triangular symplectic basis. We also consider applications to the first order flow equations for non-BPS extremal black holes.

Degeneration of Groups of Type E7 and Minimal Coupling in Supergravity

We study properties of D = 4, N >1 extended supergravities (and related compactifications of superstring theory) and their consistent truncation to the phenomenologically interesting models of N = 1 supergravity. This involves a detailed classification of the "degenerations" of the duality groups of type E7, when the corresponding quartic invariant polynomial built from the symplectic irreducible representation of G4 "degenerates" into a perfect square. With regard to cosmological applications, we conclude that the consistent truncation to N = 1 from higher-dimensional or higher-N theory gives a zero measure minimal coupling of vectors. A non-minimal coupling involving vectors coupled to scalars and axions is generic. These features of supergravity, following from the electric-magnetic duality, may be useful in other applications, like stabilization of moduli, and in studies of non-perturbative black-hole solutions of supergravity/string theory.

Magic Coset Decompositions

By exploiting a "mixed" non-symmetric Freudenthal-Rozenfeld-Tits magic square, two types of coset decompositions are analyzed for the non-compact special Kähler symmetric rank-3 coset E7(-25)/[(E6(-78) x U(1))/Z_3], occurring in supergravity as the vector multiplets' scalar manifold in N=2, D=4 exceptional Maxwell-Einstein theory. The first decomposition exhibits maximal manifest covariance, whereas the second (triality-symmetric) one is of Iwasawa type, with maximal SO(8) covariance. Generalizations to conformal non-compact, real forms of non-degenerate, simple groups "of type E7" are presented for both classes of coset parametrizations, and relations to rank-3 simple Euclidean Jordan algebras and normed trialities over division algebras are also discussed.

Multi-Centered First Order Formalism

We propose a first order formalism for multi-centered black holes with flat tree-dimensional base-space, within the stu model of N=2, D=4 ungauged Maxwell-Einstein supergravity. This provides a unified description of first order flows of this universal sector of all models with a symmetric scalar manifold which can be obtained by dimensional reduction from five dimensions. We develop a D=3 Cartesian formalism which suitably extends the definition of central and matter charges, as well as of black hole effective potential and first order "fake" superpotential, in order to deal with not necessarily axisimmetric solutions, and thus with multi-centered and/or (under-)rotating extremal black holes. We derive general first order flow equations for composite non-BPS and almost BPS classes, and we analyze some of their solutions, retrieving various single-centered (static or under-rotating) and multi-centered known systems. As in the t^3 model, the almost BPS class turns out to split into two general branches, and the well known almost BPS system is shown to be a particular solution of the second branch.

Multi-Centered Invariants, Plethysm and Grassmannians

Motivated by multi-centered black hole solutions of Maxwell-Einstein theories of (super)gravity in D=4 space-time dimensions, we develop some general methods, that can be used to determine all homogeneous invariant polynomials on the irreducible (SL_h(p,R) x G4)-representation (p,R), where p denotes the number of centers, and SL_h(p,R) is the "horizontal" symmetry of the system, acting upon the indices labelling the centers. The black hole electric and magnetic charges sit in the symplectic representation R of the generalized electric-magnetic (U-)duality group G4. We start with an algebraic approach based on classical invariant theory, using Schur polynomials and the Cauchy formula. Then, we perform a geometric analysis, involving Grassmannians, Pluecker coordinates, and exploiting Bott's Theorem. We focus on non-degenerate groups G4 "of type E7" relevant for (super)gravities whose (vector multiplets') scalar manifold is a symmetric space. In the triality-symmetric stu model of N=2 supergravity, we explicitly construct a basis for the 10 linearly independent degree-12 invariant polynomials of 3-centered black holes.

On Invariant Structures of Black Hole Charges

We study "minimal degree" complete bases of duality- and "horizontal"- invariant homogeneous polynomials in the flux representation of two-centered black hole solutions in two classes of D=4 Einstein supergravity models with symmetric vector multiplets' scalar manifolds. Both classes exhibit an SL(2,R) "horizontal" symmetry. The first class encompasses N=2 and N=4 matter-coupled theories, with semi-simple U-duality given by SL(2,R) x SO(m,n); the analysis is carried out in the so-called Calabi-Vesentini symplectic frame (exhibiting maximal manifest covariance) and until order six in the fluxes included. The second class, exhibiting a non-trivial "horizontal" stabilizer SO(2), includes N=2 minimally coupled and N=3 matter coupled theories, with U-duality given by the pseudo-unitary group U(r,s) (related to complex flux representations). Finally, we comment on the formulation of special Kaehler geometry in terms of "generalized" groups of type E7.

On Symmetries of Extremal Black Holes with One and Two Centers

After a brief introduction to the Attractor Mechanism, we review the appearance of groups of type E7 as generalized electric-magnetic duality symmetries in locally supersymmetric theories of gravity, with particular emphasis on the symplectic structure of fluxes in the background of extremal black hole solutions, with one or two centers. In the latter case, the role of an "horizontal" symmetry SL(2,R) is elucidated by presenting a set of two-centered relations governing the structure of two-centered invariant polynomials.

On the Scalar Manifold of Exceptional Supergravity

We construct two parametrizations of the non compact exceptional Lie group G=E7(-25), based on a fibration which has the maximal compact subgroup K=(E6 x U(1))/Z_3 as a fiber. It is well known that G plays an important role in the N=2 d=4 magic exceptional supergravity, where it describes the U-duality of the theory and where the symmetric space M=G/K gives the vector multiplets' scalar manifold. First, by making use of the exponential map, we compute a realization of G/K, that is based on the E6 invariant d-tensor, and hence exhibits the maximal possible manifest [(E6 x U(1))/Z_3]-covariance. This provides a basis for the corresponding supergravity theory, which is the analogue of the Calabi-Vesentini coordinates. Then we study the Iwasawa decomposition. Its main feature is that it is SO(8)-covariant and therefore it highlights the role of triality. Along the way we analyze the relevant chain of maximal embeddings which leads to SO(8). It is worth noticing that being based on the properties of a "mixed" Freudenthal-Tits magic square, the whole procedure can be generalized to a broader class of groups of type E7.

Squaring the Magic

We construct and classify all possible Magic Squares (MS's) related to Euclidean or Lorentzian rank-3 simple Jordan algebras, both on normed division algebras and split composition algebras. Besides the known Freudenthal-Rozenfeld-Tits MS, the single-split Günaydin-Sierra-Townsend MS, and the double-split Barton-Sudbery MS, we obtain other 7 Euclidean and 10 Lorentzian novel MS's. We elucidate the role and the meaning of the various non-compact real forms of Lie algebras, entering the MS's as symmetries of theories of Einstein-Maxwell gravity coupled to non-linear sigma models of scalar fields, possibly endowed with local supersymmetry, in D = 3, 4 and 5 space-time dimensions. In particular, such symmetries can be recognized as the U-dualities or the stabilizers of scalar manifolds within space-time with standard Lorentzian signature or with other, more exotic signatures, also relevant to suitable compactifications of the so-called M*- and M'- theories. Symmetries pertaining to some attractor U-orbits of magic supergravities in Lorentzian space-time also arise in this framework.

Exceptional Reductions

Starting from basic identities of the group E8, we perform progressive reductions, namely decompositions with respect to the maximal and symmetric embeddings of E7xSU(2) and then of E6xU(1). This procedure provides a systematic approach to the basic identities involving invariant primitive tensor structures of various irreprs. of finite-dimensional exceptional Lie groups. We derive novel identities for E7 and E6, highlighting the E8 origin of some well known ones. In order to elucidate the connections of this formalism to four-dimensional Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theories based on symmetric scalar manifolds (and related to irreducible Euclidean Jordan algebras, the unique exception being the triality-symmetric N = 2 stu model), we then derive a fundamental identity involving the unique rank-4 symmetric invariant tensor of the 0-brane charge symplectic irrepr. of U-duality groups, with potential applications in the quantization of the charge orbits of supergravity theories, as well as in the study of multi-center black hole solutions therein.

Freudenthal Duality and Generalized Special Geometry

Freudenthal duality, introduced in L. Borsten, D. Dahanayake, M. J. Duff and W. Rubens, Phys.Rev. D80, 026003 (2009), and defined as an anti-involution on the dyonic charge vector in d = 4 space-time dimensions for those dualities admitting a quartic invariant, is proved to be a symmetry not only of the classical Bekenstein-Hawking entropy but also of the critical points of the black hole potential. Furthermore, Freudenthal duality is extended to any generalized special geometry, thus encompassing all N > 2 supergravities, as well as N = 2 generic special geometry, not necessarily having a coset space structure.

Generalized Mirror Symmetry and Quantum Black Hole Entropy

We find general relations between the on-shell gravitational trace anomaly A_N, and the logarithmic correction Delta S_N to the entropy of "large" BPS extremal black holes in N>1 supergravity theories in D=4 space-time dimensions (recently computed by Sen [arXiv:1108.3842]). For (generalized) self-mirror theories (all having A_N = 0), we obtain the result DeltaS_N = - Delta S_(8-N) = 2 - N/2, whereas for generic theories the trace anomaly tildeA_N of the fully dualized theory turns out to coincide with 2Delta S_N, up to a model-independent shift: tildeA_N = 2Delta S_N - 1. We also speculate on N=1 theories displaying "large" extremal black hole solutions.

Perturbative and Non-Perturbative Aspects of N=8 Supergravity

Some aspects of quantum properties of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions are discussed for non-practitioners. At perturbative level, they include the Weyl trace anomaly as well as composite duality anomalies, the latter being relevant for perturbative finiteness. At non-perturbative level, we briefly review some facts about extremal black holes, their Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and attractor flows for single- and two-centered solutions.

Small Black Hole Constituents and Horizontal Symmetry

By exploiting the role of the horizontal symmetry SL(2,R), we extend the analysis and classification of two-centered extremal black hole charge configurations to the case of "small" single-centered constituents. These latter are seen to decrease the number of independent horizontal-invariant polynomials from four to one, depending on the rank of the charge orbit supporting each of the two centers. Within U-duality groups of type E7, both reducible and irreducible symmetric supergravity models in four space-time dimensions are considered, thus encompassing N = 2 and N = 8 theories.

Split Attractor Flow in N=2 Minimally Coupled Supergravity

We classify the stability region, marginal stability walls (MS) and split attractor flows for two-center extremal black holes in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity minimally coupled to n vector multiplets. It is found that two-center (continuous) charge orbits, classified by four duality invariants, either support a stability region ending on a MS wall or on an anti-marginal stability (AMS) wall, but not both. Therefore, the scalar manifold never contains both walls. Moreover, the BPS mass of the black hole composite (in its stability region) never vanishes in the scalar manifold. For these reasons, the "bound state transformation walls" phenomenon does not necessarily occur in these theories. The entropy of the flow trees also satisfies an inequality which forbids "entropy enigma" decays in these models. Finally, the non-BPS case, due to the existence of a "fake" superpotential satisfying a triangle inequality, can be treated as well, and it can be shown to exhibit a split attractor flow dynamics which, at least in the n=1 case, is analogous to the BPS one.

Superconformal Symmetry, NMSSM, and Inflation

We identify a particularly simple class of supergravity models describing superconformal coupling of matter to supergravity. In these models, which we call the canonical superconformal supergravity (CSS) models, the kinetic terms in the Jordan frame are canonical, and the scalar potential is the same as in the global theory. The pure supergravity part of the total action has a local Poincare supersymmetry, whereas the chiral and vector multiplets coupled to supergravity have a larger local superconformal symmetry. The scale-free globally supersymmetric theories, such as the NMSSM with a scale-invariant superpotential, can be naturally embedded into this class of theories. After the supergravity embedding, the Jordan frame scalar potential of such theories remains scale free; it is quartic, it contains no mass terms, no nonrenormalizable terms, no cosmological constant. The local superconformal symmetry can be broken by additional terms, which, in the small field limit, are suppressed by the gravitational coupling. This can be achieved by introducing the nonminimal scalar-curvature coupling, and by taking into account interactions with a hidden sector. In this approach, the smallness of the mass parameters in the NMSSM may be traced back to the original superconformal invariance. This allows to address the μ-problem and the cosmological domain wall problem in this model, and to implement chaotic inflation in the NMSSM. We discuss the gravitino problem in the NMSSM inflation, as well as the possibility to obtain a broad class of new versions of chaotic inflation in supergravity.

Two-Center Black Holes Duality-Invariants for stu Model and its lower-rank Descendants

We classify 2-center extremal black hole charge configurations through duality-invariant homogeneous polynomials, which are the generalization of the unique invariant quartic polynomial for single-center black holes based on homogeneous symmetric cubic special Kaehler geometries. A crucial role is played by an horizontal SL(p,R) symmetry group, which classifies invariants for p-center black holes. For p = 2, a (spin 2) quintet of quartic invariants emerge. We provide the minimal set of independent invariants for the rank-3 N = 2, d = 4 stu model, and for its lower-rank descendants, namely the rank-2 st^2 and rank-1 t^3 models; these models respectively exhibit seven, six and five independent invariants. We also derive the polynomial relations among these and other duality invariants. In particular, the symplectic product of two charge vectors is not independent from the quartic quintet in the t^3 model, but rather it satisfies a degree-16 relation, corresponding to a quartic equation for the square of the symplectic product itself.

A special road to AdS vacua

We apply the techniques of special Kaehler geometry to investigate AdS_4 vacua of general N=2 gauged supergravities underlying flux compactifications of type II theories. We formulate the scalar potential and its extremization conditions in terms of a triplet of prepotentials P_x and their special Kaehler covariant derivatives only, in a form that recalls the potential and the attractor equations of N=2 black holes. We propose a system of first order equations for the P_x which generalize the supersymmetry conditions and yield non-supersymmetric vacua. Special geometry allows us to recast these equations in algebraic form, and we find an infinite class of new N=0 and N=1 AdS_4 solutions, displaying a rich pattern of non-trivial charges associated with NSNS and RR fluxes. Finally, by explicit evaluation of the entropy function on the solutions, we derive a U-duality invariant expression for the cosmological constant and the central charges of the dual CFT's.

Charge Orbits of Extremal Black Holes in Five Dimensional Supergravity

We derive the U-duality charge orbits, as well as the related moduli spaces, of "large" and "small" extremal black holes in non-maximal ungauged Maxwell-Einstein supergravities with symmetric scalar manifolds in d=5 space-time dimensions. The stabilizer groups of the various classes of orbits are obtained by determining and solving suitable U-invariant sets of constraints, both in "bare" and "dressed" charges bases, with various methods. After a general treatment of attractors in real special geometry (also considering non-symmetric cases), the N=2 "magic" theories, as well as the N=2 Jordan symmetric sequence, are analyzed in detail. Finally, the half-maximal (N=4) matter-coupled supergravity is also studied in this context.

Iwasawa N=8 Attractors

Starting from the symplectic construction of the Lie algebra e_7(7) due to Adams, we consider an Iwasawa parametrization of the coset E_7(7)/SU(8), which is the scalar manifold of N=8, d=4 supergravity. Our approach, and the manifest off-shell symmetry of the resulting symplectic frame, is determined by a non-compact Cartan subalgebra of the maximal subgroup SL(8,R) of E_7(7). In absence of gauging, we utilize the explicit expression of the Lie algebra to study the origin of E_7(7)/SU(8) as scalar configuration of a 1/8-BPS extremal black hole attractor. In such a framework, we highlight the action of a U(1) symmetry spanning the dyonic 1/8-BPS attractors. Within a suitable supersymmetry truncation allowing for the embedding of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, this U(1) is interpreted as nothing but the global R-symmetry of pure N=2 supergravity. Moreover, we find that the above mentioned U(1) symmetry is broken down to a discrete subgroup Z_4, implying that all 1/8-BPS Iwasawa attractors are non-dyonic near the origin of the scalar manifold. We can trace this phenomenon back to the fact that the Cartan subalgebra of SL(8,R) used in our construction endows the symplectic frame with a manifest off-shell covariance which is smaller than SL(8,R) itself. Thus, the consistence of the Adams-Iwasawa symplectic basis with the action of the U(1) symmetry gives rise to the observed Z_4 residual non-dyonic symmetry.

Jordan Frame Supergravity and Inflation in NMSSM

We present a complete explicit N=1, d=4 supergravity action in an arbitrary Jordan frame with non-minimal scalar-curvature coupling of the form $Φ(z, \bar z)\, R$. The action is derived by suitably gauge-fixing the superconformal action. The theory has a modified Kaehler geometry, and it exhibits a significant dependence on the frame function $Φ(z, \bar z)$ and its derivatives over scalars, in the bosonic as well as in the fermionic part of the action. Under certain simple conditions, the scalar kinetic terms in the Jordan frame have a canonical form. We consider an embedding of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) gauge theory into supergravity, clarifying the Higgs inflation model recently proposed by Einhorn and Jones. We find that the conditions for canonical kinetic terms are satisfied for the NMSSM scalars in the Jordan frame, which leads to a simple action. However, we find that the gauge singlet field experiences a strong tachyonic instability during inflation in this model. Thus, a modification of the model is required to support the Higgs-type inflation.

Matrix Norms, BPS Bounds and Marginal Stability in N=8 Supergravity

We study the conditions of marginal stability for two-center extremal black holes in N-extended supergravity in four dimensions, with particular emphasis on the N=8 case. This is achieved by exploiting triangle inequalities satisfied by matrix norms. Using different norms and relative bounds among them, we establish the existence of marginal stability and split attractor flows both for BPS and some non-BPS solutions. Our results are in agreement with previous analysis based on explicit construction of multi-center solutions.

Small N=2 Extremal Black Holes in Special Geometry

We provide an intrinsic classification of the large and small orbits for N=2, 4D extremal black holes on symmetric spaces which does not depend on the duality frame used for the charges or on the special coordinates. A coordinate independent formula for the fake superpotential W, which (at infinity) represents the black hole ADM mass, is given explicitly in terms of invariants of the N=2 special geometry.

Topics in Cubic Special Geometry

We reconsider the sub-leading quantum perturbative corrections to N=2 cubic special Kaehler geometries. Imposing the invariance under axion-shifts, all such corrections (but the imaginary constant one) can be introduced or removed through suitable, lower unitriangular symplectic transformations, dubbed Peccei-Quinn (PQ) transformations. Since PQ transformations do not belong to the d=4 U-duality group G4, in symmetric cases they generally have a non-trivial action on the unique quartic invariant polynomial I4 of the charge representation R of G4. This leads to interesting phenomena in relation to theory of extremal black hole attractors; namely, the possibility to make transitions between different charge orbits of R, with corresponding change of the supersymmetry properties of the supported attractor solutions. Furthermore, a suitable action of PQ transformations can also set I4 to zero, or vice versa it can generate a non-vanishing I4: this corresponds to transitions between "large" and "small" charge orbits, which we classify in some detail within the "special coordinates" symplectic frame. Finally, after a brief account of the action of PQ transformations on the recently established correspondence between Cayley's hyperdeterminant and elliptic curves, we derive an equivalent, alternative expression of I4, with relevant application to black hole entropy.

Duality, Entropy and ADM Mass in Supergravity

Symmetries of both "large" and "small" extremal black holes are considered, as well as the ADM mass formula for N=4 and N=8 supergravity, preserving different fraction of supersymmetry. The interplay between BPS conditions and duality properties is an important aspect of this investigation.

Killing symmetries of generalized Minkowski spaces. 1-Algebraic-infinitesimal structure of space-time rotation groups

In this paper, we introduce the concept of N-dimensional generalized Minkowski space, i.e. a space endowed with a (in general non-diagonal) metric tensor, whose coefficients do depend on a set of non-metrical coodinates. This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the investigation of the Killing symmetries of generalized Minkowski spaces. In particular, we discuss here the infinitesimal-algebraic structure of the space-time rotations in such spaces. It is shown that the maximal Killing group of these spaces is the direct product of a generalized Lorentz group and a generalized translation group. We derive the explicit form of the generators of the generalized Lorentz group in the self-representation and their related, generalized Lorentz algebra. The results obtained are specialized to the case of a 4-dimensional, ''deformed'' Minkowski space $% \widetilde{M_{4}}$, i.e. a pseudoeuclidean space with metric coefficients depending on energy.

We discuss here the finite structure of the space-time rotations in such spaces, by confining ourselves (without loss of generality) to the four-dimensional case. In particular, the results obtained are specialized to the case of a ''deformed'' Minkowski space $% \widetilde{M_{4}}$ (i.e. a pseudoeuclidean space with metric coefficients depending on energy), for which we derive the explicit general form of the finite rotations and boosts in different parametric bases.
