Stability of the scattering transform for deformations with minimal regularity

Within the mathematical analysis of deep convolutional neural networks, the wavelet scattering transform introduced by Stéphane Mallat is a unique example of how the ideas of multiscale analysis can be combined with a cascade of modulus nonlinearities to build a nonexpansive, translation invariant signal representation with provable geometric stability properties, namely Lipschitz continuity to the action of small $C^2$ diffeomorphisms - a remarkable result for both theoretical and practical purposes, inherently depending on the choice of the filters and their arrangement into a hierarchical architecture. In this note, we further investigate the intimate relationship between the scattering structure and the regularity of the deformation in the Hölder regularity scale $C^α$, $α>0$. We are able to precisely identify the stability threshold, proving that stability is still achievable for deformations of class $C^α$, $α>1$, whereas instability phenomena can occur at lower regularity levels modelled by $C^α$, $0\le α<1$. While the behaviour at the threshold given by Lipschitz (or even $C^1$) regularity remains beyond reach, we are able to prove a stability bound in that case, up to $\varepsilon$ losses.

The uncertainty principle for the short-time Fourier transform on finite cyclic groups: cases of equality

A well-known version of the uncertainty principle on the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_N$ states that for any couple of functions $f,g\in\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}_N)\setminus\{0\}$, the short-time Fourier transform $V_g f$ has support of cardinality at least $N$. This result can be regarded as a time-frequency version of the celebrated Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle on $\mathbb{Z}_N$. Unlike the Donoho-Stark principle, however, a complete identification of the extremals is still missing. In this note we provide an answer to this problem by proving that the support of $V_g f$ has cardinality $N$ if and only if it is a coset of a subgroup of order $N$ of $\mathbb{Z}_N\times \mathbb{Z}_N$. Also, we completely identify the corresponding extremal functions $f,g$. Besides translations and modulations, the symmetries of the problem are encoded by certain metaplectic operators associated with elements of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z}_{N/a})$, where $a$ is a divisor of $N$. Partial generalizations are given to finite Abelian groups.

Decay and Smoothness for Eigenfunctions of Localization Operators

We study decay and smoothness properties for eigenfunctions of compact localization operators. Operators with symbols a in the wide modulation space M^{p,\infty} (containing the Lebesgue space L^p), p<\infty, and windows \f_1,\f_2 in the Schwartz class are known to be compact. We show that their L^2-eigenfuctions with non-zero eigenvalues are indeed highly compressed onto a few Gabor atoms. Similarly, for symbols a in the weighted modulation spaces M^{\infty}_{v_s\otimes 1} (\rdd), s>0 (subspaces of M^{p,\infty}(\rdd), p>2d/s) the L^2-eigenfunctions of the localization operator are actually Schwartz functions. An important role is played by quasi-Banach Wiener amalgam and modulation spaces. As a tool, new convolution relations for modulation spaces and multiplication relations for Wiener amalgam spaces in the quasi-Banach setting are exhibited.

Dispersion, spreading and sparsity of Gabor wave packets for metaplectic and Schrödinger operators

Sparsity properties for phase-space representations of several types of operators have been extensively studied in recent papers, including pseudodifferential, Fourier integral and metaplectic operators, with applications to time-frequency analysis of Schrödinger-type evolution equations. It has been proved that such operators are approximately diagonalized by Gabor wave packets. While the latter are expected to undergo some spreading phenomenon, there is no record of this issue in the aforementioned results. In this paper we prove refined estimates for the Gabor matrix of metaplectic operators, also of generalized type, where sparsity, spreading and dispersive properties are all noticeable. We provide applications to the propagation of singularities for the Schrödinger equation.

On exceptional times for pointwise convergence of integral kernels in Feynman-Trotter path integrals

In the first part of the paper we provide a survey of recent results concerning the problem of pointwise convergence of integral kernels in Feynman path integral, obtained by means of time-frequency analysis techniques. We then focus on exceptional times, where the previous results do not hold, and we show that weaker forms of convergence still occur. In conclusion we offer some clues about possible physical interpretation of exceptional times.

Phase space analysis of the Hermite semigroup and applications to nonlinear global well-posedness

We study the Hermite operator $H=-Δ+|x|^2$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and its fractional powers $H^β$, $β>0$ in phase space. Namely, we represent functions $f$ via the so-called short-time Fourier, alias Fourier-Wigner or Bargmann transform $V_g f$ ($g$ being a fixed window function), and we measure their regularity and decay by means of mixed Lebesgue norms in phase space of $V_g f$, that is in terms of membership to modulation spaces $M^{p,q}$, $0< p,q\leq \infty$. We prove the complete range of fixed-time estimates for the semigroup $e^{-tH^β}$ when acting on $M^{p,q}$, for every $0< p,q\leq \infty$, exhibiting the optimal global-in-time decay as well as phase-space smoothing. As an application, we establish global well-posedness for the nonlinear heat equation for $H^β$ with power-type nonlinearity (focusing or defocusing), with small initial data in modulation spaces or in Wiener amalgam spaces. We show that such a global solution exhibits the same optimal decay $e^{-c t}$ as the solution of the corresponding linear equation, where $c=d^β$ is the bottom of the spectrum of $H^β$. This is in sharp contrast to what happens for the nonlinear focusing heat equation without potential, where blow-up in finite time always occurs for (even small) constant initial data - hence in $M^{\infty,1}$.

A note on the HRT conjecture and a new uncertainty principle for the short-time Fourier transform

In this note we provide a negative answer to a question raised by M. Kreisel concerning a condition on the short-time Fourier transform that would imply the HRT conjecture. In particular we provide a new type of uncertainty principle for the short-time Fourier transform which forbids the arrangement of an arbitrary "bump with fat tail" profile.

On the pointwise convergence of the integral kernels in the Feynman-Trotter formula

We study path integrals in the Trotter-type form for the Schrödinger equation, where the Hamiltonian is the Weyl quantization of a real-valued quadratic form perturbed by a potential $V$ in a class encompassing that - considered by Albeverio and Itô in celebrated papers - of Fourier transforms of complex measures. Essentially, $V$ is bounded and has the regularity of a function whose Fourier transform is in $L^1$. Whereas the strong convergence in $L^2$ in the Trotter formula, as well as several related issues at the operator norm level are well understood, the original Feynman's idea concerned the subtler and widely open problem of the pointwise convergence of the corresponding probability amplitudes, that are the integral kernels of the approximation operators. We prove that, for the above class of potentials, such a convergence at the level of the integral kernels in fact occurs, uniformly on compact subsets and for every fixed time, except for certain exceptional time values for which the kernels are in general just distributions. Actually, theorems are stated for potentials in several function spaces arising in Harmonic Analysis, with corresponding convergence results. Proofs rely on Banach algebras techniques for pseudo-differential operators acting on such function spaces.

Born-Jordan Pseudo-Differential Operators with Symbols in the Shubin Classes

We apply Shubin's theory of global symbol classes $Γ_ρ^{m}$ to the Born-Jordan pseudodifferential calculus we have previously developed. This approach has many conceptual advantages, and makes the relationship between the conflicting Born-Jordan and Weyl quantization methods much more limpid. We give, in particular, precise asymptotic expansions of symbols allowing to pass from Born-Jordan quantization to Weyl quantization, and vice-versa. In addition we state and prove some regularity and global hypoellipticity results.

Convergence in $L^p$ for Feynman path integrals

We consider a class of Schrodinger equations with time-dependent smooth magnetic and electric potentials having a growth at infinity at most linear and quadratic, respectively. We study the convergence in $L^p$ with loss of derivatives, $1<p<\infty$, of the time slicing approximations of the corresponding Feynman path integral. The results are completely sharp and hold for long time, where no smoothing effect is available. The techniques are based on the decomposition and reconstruction of functions and operators with respect to certain wave packets in phase space.

Exponentially sparse representations of Fourier integral operators

We investigate the sparsity of the Gabor-matrix representation of Fourier integral operators with a phase having quadratic growth. It is known that such an infinite matrix is sparse and well organized, being in fact concentrated along the graph of the corresponding canonical transformation. Here we show that, if the phase and symbol have a regularity of Gevrey type of order $s>1$ or analytic ($s=1$), the above decay is in fact sub-exponential or exponential, respectively. We also show by a counterexample that ultra-analytic regularity ($s<1$) does not give super-exponential decay. This is in sharp contrast to the more favorable case of pseudodifferential operators, or even (generalized) metaplectic operators, which are treated as well.

Gabor analysis for Schrodinger equations and propagation of singularities

We consider the Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} i \displaystyle\frac{\partial u}{\partial t} +Hu=0,\quad H=a(x,D), \end{equation*} where the Hamiltonian $a(z)$, $z=(x,ξ)$, is assumed real-valued and smooth, with bounded derivatives $|\partial^αa(z)|\leq C_α$, for every $|α|\geq 2$, $z\in\mathbb{R}^{2d}$. For such equation results are known concerning well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for initial data in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and local representation of the propagator $e^{it H}$ by means of Fourier integral operators. In the present paper we give a global expression for $e^{itH}$ in terms of Gabor analysis and we deduce boundedness in modulation spaces. Moreover, by using time-frequency techniques, we obtain a result of propagation of micro-singularities for $e^{itH}$.

Gabor Frames of Gaussian Beams for the Schrödinger equation

The present paper is devoted to the semiclassical analysis of linear Schrödinger equations from a Gabor frame perspective. We consider (time-dependent) smooth Hamiltonians with at most quadratic growth. Then we construct higher order parametrices for the corresponding Schrödinger equations by means of $\hbar$-Gabor frames, as recently defined by M. de Gosson, and we provide precise $L^2$-estimates of their accuracy, in terms of the Planck constant $\hbar$. Nonlinear parametrices, in the spirit of the nonlinear approximation, are also presented. Numerical experiments are exhibited to compare our results with the early literature.

Generalized Metaplectic Operators and the Schrödinger Equation with a Potential in the Sjöstrand Class

It is well known that the matrix of a metaplectic operator with respect to phase-space shifts is concentrated along the graph of a linear symplectic map. We show that the algebra generated by metaplectic operators and by pseudodifferential opertators in a Sjöstrand class enjoys the same decay properties. We study the behavior of these generalized metaplectic operators and represent them by Fourier integral operators. Our main result shows that the one-parameter group generated by a Hamiltonian operator with a potential in the Sjöstrand class consists of generalized metaplectic operators. As a consequence, the Schrödinger equation preserves the phase-space concentration, as measured by modulation space norms.

On the Invertibility of Born-Jordan Quantization

As a consequence of the Schwartz kernel Theorem, any linear continuous operator $\widehat{A}:$ $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\longrightarrow\mathcal{S}^{\prime}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ can be written in Weyl form in a unique way, namely it is the Weyl quantization of a unique symbol $a\in\mathcal{S}^{\prime}(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$. Hence, dequantization can always be performed, and in a unique way. Despite the importance of this topic in Quantum Mechanics and Time-frequency Analysis, the same issue for the Born-Jordan quantization seems simply unexplored, except for the case of polynomial symbols, which we also review in detail. In this paper we show that any operator $\widehat{A}$ as above can be written in Born-Jordan form, although the representation is never unique if one allows general temperate distributions as symbols. Then we consider the same problem when the space of temperate distributions is replaced by the space of smooth slowly increasing functions which extend to entire function in $\mathbb{C}^{2n}$, with a growth at most exponential in the imaginary directions. We prove again the validity of such a representation, and we determine a sharp threshold for the exponential growth under which the representation is unique. We employ techniques from the theory of division of distributions.

On the time slicing approximation of Feynman path integrals for non-smooth potentials

We consider the time slicing approximations of Feynman path integrals, constructed via piecewice classical paths. A detailed study of the convergence in the norm operator topology, in the space $\mathcal{B}(L^2(\mathbb{R}^d))$ of bounded operators on $L^2$, and even in finer operator topologies, was carried on by D. Fujiwara in the case of smooth potentials with an at most quadratic growth. In the present paper we show that the result about the convergence in $\mathcal{B}(L^2(\mathbb{R}^d))$ remains valid if the potential is only assumed to have second space derivatives in the Sobolev space $H^{d+1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ (locally and uniformly), uniformly in time. The proof is non-perturbative in nature, but relies on a precise short time analysis of the Hamiltonian flow at this Sobolev regularity and on the continuity in $L^2$ of certain oscillatory integral operators with non-smooth phase and amplitude.

Schrödinger equations with rough Hamiltonians

We consider a class of linear Schrödinger equations in R^d with rough Hamiltonian, namely with certain derivatives in the Sjöstrand class $M^{\infty,1}$. We prove that the corresponding propagator is bounded on modulation spaces. The present results improve several contributions recently appeared in the literature and can be regarded as the evolution counterpart of the fundamental result of Sjöstrand about the boundedness of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in that class. Finally we consider nonlinear perturbations of real-analytic type and we prove local wellposedness of the corresponding initial value problem in certain modulation spaces.

Sharp decay estimates and smoothness for solutions to nonlocal semilinear equations

We consider semilinear equations of the form p(D)u=F(u), with a locally bounded nonlinearity F(u), and a linear part p(D) given by a Fourier multiplier. The multiplier p(ξ) is the sum of positively homogeneous terms, with at least one of them non smooth. This general class of equations includes most physical models for traveling waves in hydrodynamics, the Benjamin-Ono equation being a basic example. We prove sharp pointwise decay estimates for the solutions to such equations, depending on the degree of the non smooth terms in p(ξ). When the nonlinearity is smooth we prove similar estimates for the derivatives of the solution, as well holomorphic extension to a strip, for analytic nonlinearity.

Wave packet analysis of Schrodinger equations in analytic function spaces

We consider a class of linear Schroedinger equations in R^d, with analytic symbols. We prove a global-in-time integral representation for the corresponding propagator as a generalized Gabor multiplier with a window analytic and decaying exponentially at infinity, which is transported by the Hamiltonian flow. We then provide three applications of the above result: the exponential sparsity in phase space of the corresponding propagator with respect to Gabor wave packets, a wave packet characterization of Fourier integral operators with analytic phases and symbols, and the propagation of analytic singularities.

A Two Dimensional Adler-Manin Trace and Bi-singular Operators

Motivated by the theory of bi-singular pseudodifferential operators, we introduce a two dimensional version of the Adler-Manin trace. Our construction is rather general in the sense that it involves a twist afforded by an algebra automorphism. That is, starting from an algebra equipped with an automorphism, two twisted derivations, and a twisted invariant trace, we construct an algebra of formal twisted pseudodifferential symbols and define a noncommutative residue. Also, we provide related examples.

Approximation of Fourier Integral Operators by Gabor multipliers

A general principle says that the matrix of a Fourier integral operator with respect to wave packets is concentrated near the curve of propagation. We prove a precise version of this principle for Fourier integral operators with a smooth phase and a symbol in the Sjoestrand class and use Gabor frames as wave packets. The almost diagonalization of such Fourier integral operators suggests a specific approximation by (a sum of) elementary operators, namely modified Gabor multipliers. We derive error estimates for such approximations. The methods are taken from time-frequency analysis.

Pseudodifferential operators on $L^p$, Wiener amalgam and modulation spaces

We give a complete characterization of the continuity of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in modulation spaces $M^{p,q}$, acting on a given Lebesgue space $L^r$. Namely, we find the full range of triples $(p,q,r)$, for which such a boundedness occurs. More generally, we completely characterize the same problem for operators acting on Wiener amalgam space $W(L^r,L^s)$ and even on modulation spaces $M^{r,s}$. Finally the action of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in $W(\Fur L^1,L^\infty)$ is also investigated.

Sharp Continuity Results for the Short-Time Fourier Transform and for Localization Operators

We completely characterize the boundedness on $L^p$ spaces and on Wiener amalgam spaces of the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and of a special class of pseudodifferential operators, called localization operators. Precisely, a well-known STFT boundedness result on $L^p$ spaces is proved to be sharp. Then, sufficient conditions for the STFT to be bounded on the Wiener amalgam spaces $W(L^p,L^q)$ are given and their sharpness is shown. Localization operators are treated similarly. Using different techniques from those employed in the literature, we relax the known sufficient boundedness conditions for localization operators on $L^p$ spaces and prove the optimality of our results. More generally, we prove sufficient and necessary conditions for such operators to be bounded on Wiener amalgam spaces.

Boundedness of Fourier Integral Operators on $\mathcal{F} L^p$ spaces

We study the action of Fourier Integral Operators (FIOs) of H{ö}rmander's type on ${\mathcal{F}} L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d_{comp}$, $1\leq p\leq\infty$. We see, from the Beurling-Helson theorem, that generally FIOs of order zero fail to be bounded on these spaces when $p\not=2$, the counterexample being given by any smooth non-linear change of variable. Here we show that FIOs of order $m=-d|1/2-1/p|$ are instead bounded. Moreover, this loss of derivatives is proved to be sharp in every dimension $d\geq1$, even for phases which are linear in the dual variables. The proofs make use of tools from time-frequency analysis such as the theory of modulation spaces.

Remarks on Fourier multipliers and applications to the Wave equation

Exploiting continuity properties of Fourier multipliers on modulation spaces and Wiener amalgam spaces, we study the Cauchy problem for the NLW equation. Local wellposedness for rough data in modulation spaces and Wiener amalgam spaces is shown. The results formulated in the framework of modulation spaces refine those in [3]. The same arguments may apply to obtain local wellposedness for the NLKG equation.

Time-Frequency Analysis of Fourier Integral Operators

We use time-frequency methods for the study of Fourier Integral operators (FIOs). In this paper we shall show that Gabor frames provide very efficient representations for a large class of FIOs. Indeed, similarly to the case of shearlets and curvelets frames, the matrix representation of a Fourier Integral Operator with respect to a Gabor frame is well-organized. This is used as a powerful tool to study the boundedness of FIOs on modulation spaces. As special cases, we recapture boundedness results on modulation spaces for pseudo-differential operators with symbols in $M^{\infty,1}$, for some unimodular Fourier multipliers and metaplectic operators.
