Wigner Analysis of Operators. Part II: Schrödinger equations

We study the phase-space concentration of the so-called generalized metaplectic operators whose main examples are Schrödinger equations with bounded perturbations. To reach this goal, we perform a so-called $\mathcal{A}$-Wigner analysis of the previous equations, as started in Part I, cf. [14]. Namely, the classical Wigner distribution is extended by considering a class of time-frequency representations constructed as images of metaplectic operators acting on symplectic matrices $\mathcal{A}\in Sp(2d,\mathbb{R})$. Sub-classes of these representations, related to covariant symplectic matrices, reveal to be particularly suited for the time-frequency study of the Schrödinger evolution. This testifies the effectiveness of this approach for such equations, highlighted by the development of a related wave front set. We first study the properties of $\mathcal{A}$-Wigner representations and related pseudodifferential operators needed for our goal. This approach paves the way to new quantization procedures. As a byproduct, we introduce new quasi-algebras of generalized metaplectic operators containing Schrödinger equations with more general potentials, extending the results contained in the previous works [8,9].

An introduction to the Gabor wave front set

In this expository note we present an introduction to the Gabor wave front set. As is often the case, this tool in microlocal analysis has been introduced and reinvented in different forms which turn out to be equivalent or intimately related. We provide a short review of the history of this notion and then focus on some recent variations inspired by function spaces in time-frequency analysis. Old and new results are presented, together with a number of concrete examples and applications to the problem of propagation of singularities.

Anisotropic Shubin operators and eigenfunctions expansions in Gelfand-Shilov spaces

We derive new results on the characterization of Gelfand--Shilov spaces $\mathcal{S}^μ_ν(\R^n)$, $μ,ν>0$, $μ+ν\geq 1$ by Gevrey estimates of the $L^2$ norms of iterates of $(m,k)$ anisotropic globally elliptic Shubin (or $Γ$) type operators, $(-Δ)^{m/2} +| x |^k$ with $m,k\in 2\N$ being a model operator, and on the decay of the Fourier coefficients in the related eigenfunction expansions. Similar results are obtained for the spaces $Σ^μ_ν(\R^n)$, $μ,ν>0$, $μ+ν> 1$, cf. \eqref{GSdef}. In contrast to the symmetric case $μ= ν$ and $k=m$ (classical Shubin operators) we encounter resonance type phenomena involving the ratio $κ:=μ/ν$; namely we obtain a characterization of $\mathcal{S}^μ_ν(\R^n)$ and $Σ^μ_ν(\R^n)$ in the case $μ=kt/(k+m), ν= mt/(k+m), t \geq 1$, that is, when $κ=k/m \in \Q$.

Propagation of Gabor singularities for Schrödinger equations with quadratic Hamiltonians

We study propagation of the Gabor wave front set for a Schrödinger equation with a Hamiltonian that is the Weyl quantization of a quadratic form with non-negative real part. We point out that the singular space associated to the quadratic form plays a crucial role for the understanding of this propagation. We show that the Gabor singularities of the solution to the equation for positive times are always contained in the singular space, and that they propagate in this set along the flow of the Hamilton vector field associated to the imaginary part of the quadratic form. As an application we obtain for the heat equation a sufficient condition on the Gabor wave front set of the initial datum tempered distribution that implies regularization to Schwartz regularity for positive times.

Exponentially sparse representations of Fourier integral operators

We investigate the sparsity of the Gabor-matrix representation of Fourier integral operators with a phase having quadratic growth. It is known that such an infinite matrix is sparse and well organized, being in fact concentrated along the graph of the corresponding canonical transformation. Here we show that, if the phase and symbol have a regularity of Gevrey type of order $s>1$ or analytic ($s=1$), the above decay is in fact sub-exponential or exponential, respectively. We also show by a counterexample that ultra-analytic regularity ($s<1$) does not give super-exponential decay. This is in sharp contrast to the more favorable case of pseudodifferential operators, or even (generalized) metaplectic operators, which are treated as well.

Gabor analysis for Schrodinger equations and propagation of singularities

We consider the Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} i \displaystyle\frac{\partial u}{\partial t} +Hu=0,\quad H=a(x,D), \end{equation*} where the Hamiltonian $a(z)$, $z=(x,ξ)$, is assumed real-valued and smooth, with bounded derivatives $|\partial^αa(z)|\leq C_α$, for every $|α|\geq 2$, $z\in\mathbb{R}^{2d}$. For such equation results are known concerning well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for initial data in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and local representation of the propagator $e^{it H}$ by means of Fourier integral operators. In the present paper we give a global expression for $e^{itH}$ in terms of Gabor analysis and we deduce boundedness in modulation spaces. Moreover, by using time-frequency techniques, we obtain a result of propagation of micro-singularities for $e^{itH}$.

Generalized Metaplectic Operators and the Schrödinger Equation with a Potential in the Sjöstrand Class

It is well known that the matrix of a metaplectic operator with respect to phase-space shifts is concentrated along the graph of a linear symplectic map. We show that the algebra generated by metaplectic operators and by pseudodifferential opertators in a Sjöstrand class enjoys the same decay properties. We study the behavior of these generalized metaplectic operators and represent them by Fourier integral operators. Our main result shows that the one-parameter group generated by a Hamiltonian operator with a potential in the Sjöstrand class consists of generalized metaplectic operators. As a consequence, the Schrödinger equation preserves the phase-space concentration, as measured by modulation space norms.

Schrödinger equations with rough Hamiltonians

We consider a class of linear Schrödinger equations in R^d with rough Hamiltonian, namely with certain derivatives in the Sjöstrand class $M^{\infty,1}$. We prove that the corresponding propagator is bounded on modulation spaces. The present results improve several contributions recently appeared in the literature and can be regarded as the evolution counterpart of the fundamental result of Sjöstrand about the boundedness of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in that class. Finally we consider nonlinear perturbations of real-analytic type and we prove local wellposedness of the corresponding initial value problem in certain modulation spaces.

Wave packet analysis of Schrodinger equations in analytic function spaces

We consider a class of linear Schroedinger equations in R^d, with analytic symbols. We prove a global-in-time integral representation for the corresponding propagator as a generalized Gabor multiplier with a window analytic and decaying exponentially at infinity, which is transported by the Hamiltonian flow. We then provide three applications of the above result: the exponential sparsity in phase space of the corresponding propagator with respect to Gabor wave packets, a wave packet characterization of Fourier integral operators with analytic phases and symbols, and the propagation of analytic singularities.

On the inverse to the harmonic oscillator

Let $b_d$ be the Weyl symbol of the inverse to the harmonic oscillator on $\R^d$. We prove that $b_d$ and its derivatives satisfy convenient bounds of Gevrey and Gelfand-Shilov type, and obtain explicit expressions for $b_d$. In the even-dimensional case we characterize $b_d$ in terms of elementary functions. In the analysis we use properties of radial symmetry and a combination of different techniques involving classical a priori estimates, commutator identities, power series and asymptotic expansions.

A Two Dimensional Adler-Manin Trace and Bi-singular Operators

Motivated by the theory of bi-singular pseudodifferential operators, we introduce a two dimensional version of the Adler-Manin trace. Our construction is rather general in the sense that it involves a twist afforded by an algebra automorphism. That is, starting from an algebra equipped with an automorphism, two twisted derivations, and a twisted invariant trace, we construct an algebra of formal twisted pseudodifferential symbols and define a noncommutative residue. Also, we provide related examples.

The Gabor wave front set

We define the Gabor wave front set $WF_G(u)$ of a tempered distribution $u$ in terms of rapid decay of its Gabor coefficients in a conic subset of the phase space. We show the inclusion $$WF_G(a^w(x,D) u) \subseteq WF_G(u), u \in \mathscr S'(\mathbb R^d), a \in S_{0,0}^0,$$ where $S_{0,0}^0$ denotes the Hörmander symbol class of order zero and parameter values zero. We compare our definition with other definitions in the literature, namely the classical and the global wave front sets of Hörmander, and the $\cS$-wave front set of Coriasco and Maniccia. In particular, we prove that the Gabor wave front set and the global wave front set of Hörmander coincide.

Decay estimates for solutions of nonlocal semilinear equations

We investigate the decay for $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ of weak Sobolev type solutions of semilinear nonlocal equations $Pu=F(u)$. We consider the case when $P=p(D)$ is an elliptic Fourier multiplier with polyhomogeneous symbol $p(ξ)$ and derive sharp algebraic decay estimates in terms of weighted Sobolev norms. In particular, we state a precise relation between the singularity of the symbol at the origin and the rate of decay of the corresponding solutions. Our basic example is the celebrated Benjamin-Ono equation {equation} \label{BO}(|D|+c)u=u^2, \qquad c>0,{equation} for internal solitary waves of deep stratified fluids. Their profile presents algebraic decay, in strong contrast with the exponential decay for KdV shallow water waves.

Almost periodic pseudodifferential operators and Gevrey classes

We study almost periodic pseudodifferential operators acting on almost periodic functions $G_{\rm ap}^s(\rr d)$ of Gevrey regularity index $s \geq 1$. We prove that almost periodic operators with symbols of Hörmander type $S_{ρ,δ}^m$ satisfying an $s$-Gevrey condition are continuous on $G_{\rm ap}^s(\rr d)$ provided $0 < ρ\leq 1$, $δ=0$ and $s ρ\geq 1$. A calculus is developed for symbols and operators using a notion of regularizing operator adapted to almost periodic Gevrey functions and its duality. We apply the results to show a regularity result in this context for a class of hypoelliptic operators.

Boundedness of Fourier Integral Operators on $\mathcal{F} L^p$ spaces

We study the action of Fourier Integral Operators (FIOs) of H{ö}rmander's type on ${\mathcal{F}} L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d_{comp}$, $1\leq p\leq\infty$. We see, from the Beurling-Helson theorem, that generally FIOs of order zero fail to be bounded on these spaces when $p\not=2$, the counterexample being given by any smooth non-linear change of variable. Here we show that FIOs of order $m=-d|1/2-1/p|$ are instead bounded. Moreover, this loss of derivatives is proved to be sharp in every dimension $d\geq1$, even for phases which are linear in the dual variables. The proofs make use of tools from time-frequency analysis such as the theory of modulation spaces.

Time-Frequency Analysis of Fourier Integral Operators

We use time-frequency methods for the study of Fourier Integral operators (FIOs). In this paper we shall show that Gabor frames provide very efficient representations for a large class of FIOs. Indeed, similarly to the case of shearlets and curvelets frames, the matrix representation of a Fourier Integral Operator with respect to a Gabor frame is well-organized. This is used as a powerful tool to study the boundedness of FIOs on modulation spaces. As special cases, we recapture boundedness results on modulation spaces for pseudo-differential operators with symbols in $M^{\infty,1}$, for some unimodular Fourier multipliers and metaplectic operators.
