Quantitative Constraints for Stable Sampling on the Sphere

We derive quantitative volume constraints for sampling measures $μ_t$ on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ that satisfy Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities of order $t$. Using precise localization estimates for Jacobi polynomials, we obtain explicit upper and lower bounds on the $μ_t$-mass of geodesic balls at the natural scale $t^{-1}$. Whereas constants are typically left implicit in the literature, we place special emphasis on fully explicit constants, and the results are genuinely quantitative. Moreover, these bounds yield quantitative constraints for the $s$-dimensional Hausdorff volume of Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund sampling sets and, in particular, optimal lower bounds for the length of Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund curves.

Gauss Quadrature for Freud Weights, Modulation Spaces, and Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund Inequalities

We study Gauss quadrature for Freud weights and derive worst case error estimates for functions in a family of associated Sobolev spaces. For the Gaussian weight $e^{-πx^2}$ these spaces coincide with a class of modulation spaces which are well-known in (time-frequency) analysis and also appear under the name of Hermite spaces. Extensions are given to more general sets of nodes that are derived from Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities. This generalization can be interpreted as a stability result for Gauss quadrature.

Sampling the flow of a bandlimited function

We analyze the problem of reconstruction of a bandlimited function $f$ from the space-time samples of its states $f_t=ϕ_t\ast f$ resulting from the convolution with a kernel $ϕ_t$. It is well-known that, in natural phenomena, uniform space-time samples of $f$ are not sufficient to reconstruct $f$ in a stable way. To enable stable reconstruction, a space-time sampling with periodic nonuniformly spaced samples must be used as was shown by Lu and Vetterli. We show that the stability of reconstruction, as measured by a condition number, controls the maximal gap between the spacial samples. We provide a quantitative statement of this result. In addition, instead of irregular space-time samples, we show that uniform dynamical samples at sub-Nyquist spatial rate allow one to stably reconstruct the function $\widehat f$ away from certain, explicitly described blind spots. We also consider several classes of finite dimensional subsets of bandlimited functions in which the stable reconstruction is possible, even inside the blind spots. We obtain quantitative estimates for it using Remez-Turán type inequalities. En route, we obtain a Remez-Turán inequality for prolate spheroidal wave functions. To illustrate our results, we present some numerics and explicit estimates for the heat flow problem.

Balian-Low type theorems on homogeneous groups

We prove strict necessary density conditions for coherent frames and Riesz sequences on homogeneous groups. Let $N$ be a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group with a dilation structure (a homogeneous group) and let $(π, \mathcal{H}_π)$ be an irreducible, square-integrable representation modulo the center $Z(N)$ of $N$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_π$ of formal dimension $d_π$. If $g \in \mathcal{H}_π$ is an integrable vector and the set $\{ π(λ)g : λ\in Λ\}$ for a discrete subset $Λ\subseteq N / Z(N)$ forms a frame for $\mathcal{H}_π$, then its density satisfies the strict inequality $D^-(Λ)> d_π$, where $D^-(Λ)$ is the lower Beurling density. An analogous density condition $D^+(Λ) < d_π$ holds for a Riesz sequence in $\mathcal{H}_π$ contained in the orbit of $(π, \mathcal{H}_π)$. The proof is based on a deformation theorem for coherent systems, a universality result for $p$-frames and $p$-Riesz sequences, some results from Banach space theory, and tools from the analysis on homogeneous groups.

Linear perturbations of the Wigner transform and the Weyl quantization

We study a class of quadratic time-frequency representations that, roughly speaking, are obtained by linear perturbations of the Wigner transform. They satisfy Moyal's formula by default and share many other properties with the Wigner transform, but in general they do not belong to Cohen's class. We provide a characterization of the intersection of the two classes. To any such time-frequency representation, we associate a pseudodifferential calculus. We investigate the related quantization procedure, study the properties of the pseudodifferential operators, and compare the formalism with that of the Weyl calculus.

Strict density inequalities for sampling and interpolation in weighted spaces of holomorphic functions

Answering a question of Lindholm, we prove strict density inequalities for sampling and interpolation in Fock spaces of entire functions in several complex variables defined by a plurisubharmonic weight. In particular, these spaces do not admit a set that is simultaneously sampling and interpolating. To prove optimality of the density conditions, we construct sampling sets with a density arbitrarily close to the critical density. The techniques combine methods from several complex variables (estimates for $\bar \partial$) and the theory of localized frames in general reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (with no analyticity assumed). The abstract results on Fekete points and deformation of frames may be of independent interest.

Gabor Frames: Characterizations and Coarse Structure

This survey offers a systematic and streamlined exposition of the most important characterizations of Gabor frames over a lattice. The goal is to collect the most important characterizations of Gabor frames and offer a systematic exposition of these structures. In the center of these characterizations is the duality theorem for Gabor frames. Most characterizations within the $L^2$-theory follow directly from this fundamental duality. In particular, the celebrated characterizations of Janssen and Ron-Shen are consequences of the duality theorem, and the characterization of Zeevi and Zibulski for rational lattices also becomes a corollary. The novelty is the streamlined sequence of proofs, so that most of the structure theory of Gabor frames fits into a single, short article. The only prerequisite is the thorough mastery of the Poisson summation formula and some basic facts about frames and Riesz sequences.

Sharp results on sampling with derivatives in shift-invariant spaces and multi-window Gabor frames

We study the problem of sampling with derivatives in shift-invariant spaces generated by totally-positive functions of Gaussian type or by the hyperbolic secant. We provide sharp conditions in terms of weighted Beurling densities. As a by-product we derive new results about multi-window Gabor frames with respect to vectors of Hermite functions or totally positive functions.

Completeness of Gabor systems

We investigate the completeness of Gabor systems with respect to several classes of window functions on rational lattices. Our main results show that the time-frequency shifts of every finite linear combination of Hermite functions with respect to a rational lattice are complete in L2(R), thus generalizing a remark of von Neumann (and proved by Bargmann, Perelomov et al.). An analogous result is proven for functions that factor into certain rational functions and the Gaussian. The results are also interesting from a conceptual point of view since they show a vast difference between the completeness and the frame property of a Gabor system. In the terminology of physics we prove new results about the completeness of coherent state subsystems.

Stability of Gabor frames under small time Hamiltonian evolutions

We consider Hamiltonian deformations of Gabor systems, where the window evolves according to the action of a Schrödinger propagator and the phase-space nodes evolve according to the corresponding Hamiltonian flow. We prove the stability of the frame property for small times and Hamiltonians consisting of a quadratic polynomial plus a potential in the Sjöstrand class with bounded second order derivatives. This answers a question raised in [de Gosson, M. Symplectic and Hamiltonian Deformations of Gabor Frames. Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. Vol. 38 No.2, (2015) p.196--221.]

The Cramer-Wold theorem on quadratic surfaces and Heisenberg uniqueness pairs

Two measurable sets $S, Λ\subseteq \mathcal{R}^d$ form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair, if every bounded measure $μ$ with support in S whose Fourier transform vanishes on Λ must be zero. We show that a quadratic hypersurface and the union of two hyperplanes in general position form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair in $\mathcal{R}^d$. As a corollary we obtain a new, surprising version of the classical Cramér-Wold theorem: a bounded measure supported on a quadratic hypersurface is uniquely determined by its projections onto two generic hyperplanes (whereas an arbitrary measure requires the knowledge of a dense set of projections). We also give an application to the unique continuation of eigenfunctions of second-order PDEs with constant coefficients .

Deformation of Gabor systems

We introduce a new notion for the deformation of Gabor systems. Such deformations are in general nonlinear and, in particular, include the standard jitter error and linear deformations of phase space. With this new notion we prove a strong deformation result for Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz sequences that covers the known perturbation and deformation results. Our proof of the deformation theorem requires a new characterization of Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz sequences. It is in the style of Beurling's characterization of sets of sampling for bandlimited functions and extends significantly the known characterization of Gabor frames "without inequalities" from lattices to non-uniform sets.

Generalized Metaplectic Operators and the Schrödinger Equation with a Potential in the Sjöstrand Class

It is well known that the matrix of a metaplectic operator with respect to phase-space shifts is concentrated along the graph of a linear symplectic map. We show that the algebra generated by metaplectic operators and by pseudodifferential opertators in a Sjöstrand class enjoys the same decay properties. We study the behavior of these generalized metaplectic operators and represent them by Fourier integral operators. Our main result shows that the one-parameter group generated by a Hamiltonian operator with a potential in the Sjöstrand class consists of generalized metaplectic operators. As a consequence, the Schrödinger equation preserves the phase-space concentration, as measured by modulation space norms.

Implementation of discretized Gabor frames and their duals

The usefulness of Gabor frames depends on the easy computability of a suitable dual window. This question is addressed under several aspects: several versions of Schulz's iterative algorithm for the approximation of the canonical dual window are analyzed for their numerical stability. For Gabor frames with totally positive windows or with exponential B-splines a direct algorithm yields a family of exact dual windows with compact support. It is shown that these dual windows converge exponentially fast to the canonical dual window.

New atomic decompositons for Bergman spaces on the unit ball

We derive atomic decompositions and frames for weighted Bergman spaces of several complex variables on the unit ball in the spirit of Coifman, Rochberg, and Luecking. In contrast to our predecessors, we use group theoretic methods, in particular the representation theory of the discrete series of $SU(n,1)$ and its covering groups. One of the benefits is a much larger class of admissible

Weaving Frames

We study an intriguing question in frame theory we call "Weaving Frames" that is partially motivated by preprocessing of Gabor frames. Two frames $\{φ_i\}_{i\in I}$ and $\{ψ_i \}_{i\in I}$ for a Hilbert space ${\mathbb H}$ are woven if there are constants $0<A \le B $ so that for every subset $σ\subset I$, the family $\{φ_i\}_{i\in σ} \cup \{ψ_i\}_{i\in σ^c}$ is a frame for $\mathbb H$ with frame bounds $A,B$. Fundamental properties of woven frames are developed and key differences between weaving Riesz bases and weaving frames are considered. In particular, it is shown that a Riesz basis cannot be woven with a redundant frame. We also introduce an apparently weaker form of weaving but show that it is equivalent to weaving. Weaving frames has potential applications in wireless sensor networks that require distributed processing under different frames, as well as preprocessing of signals using Gabor frames.

On accumulated spectrograms

We study the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the time-frequency localization operator $H_Ω$ on a domain $Ω$ of the time-frequency plane. The eigenfunctions are the appropriate prolate spheroidal functions for an arbitrary domain $Ω$. Indeed, in analogy to the classical theory of Landau-Slepian-Pollak, the number of eigenvalues of $H_Ω$ in $[1-δ, 1]$ is equal to the measure of $Ω$ up to an error term depending on the perimeter of the boundary of $Ω$. Our main results show that the spectrograms of the eigenfunctions corresponding to the large eigenvalues (which we call the accumulated spectrogram) form an approximate partition ofunity of the given domain $Ω$. We derive both asymptotic, non-asymptotic, and weak $L^2$ error estimates for the accumulated spectrogram. As a consequence the domain $Ω$ can be approximated solely from the spectrograms of eigenfunctions without information about their phase.

On Minimal Trajectories for Mobile Sampling of Bandlimited Fields

We study the design of sampling trajectories for stable sampling and the reconstruction of bandlimited spatial fields using mobile sensors. The spectrum is assumed to be a symmetric convex set. As a performance metric we use the path density of the set of sampling trajectories that is defined as the total distance traveled by the moving sensors per unit spatial volume of the spatial region being monitored. Focussing first on parallel lines, we identify the set of parallel lines with minimal path density that contains a set of stable sampling for fields bandlimited to a known set. We then show that the problem becomes ill-posed when the optimization is performed over all trajectories by demonstrating a feasible trajectory set with arbitrarily low path density. However, the problem becomes well-posed if we explicitly specify the stability margins. We demonstrate this by obtaining a non-trivial lower bound on the path density of an arbitrary set of trajectories that contain a sampling set with explicitly specified stability bounds.

Norm-Controlled Inversion in Smooth Banach Algebras, I

Every differential subalgebra of a unital $C^*$-algebra is spectrally invariant. We derive a quantitative version of this well-known fact and show that a minimal amount of smoothness, as given by a differential norm, already implies norm control. We obtain an explicit estimate for the differential norm of an invertible element $a$. This estimate depends only on the condition number of $a$ and the ratio of two norms.

preprint2012arXiv

Norm-Controlled Inversion in Smooth Banach Algebras, II

We show that smoothness implies norm-controlled inversion: the smoothness of an element $a$ in a Banach algebra with a one-parameter automorphism group is preserved under inversion, and the norm of the inverse $a^{-1}$ is controlled by the smoothness of $a$ and by spectral data. In our context smooth subalgebras are obtained with the classical constructions of approximation theory and resemble spaces of differentiable functions, Besov spaces or Bessel potential spaces. To treat ultra-smoothness, we resort to Dales-Davie algebras. Furthermore, based on Baskakov's work, we derive explicit norm control estimates for infinite matrices with polynomial off-diagonal decay. This is a quantitative version of Jaffard's theorem.

Uniqueness and Reconstruction Theorems for Pseudodifferential Operators with a Bandlimited Kohn-Nirenberg Symbol

Motivated by the problem of channel estimation in wireless communications, we derive a reconstruction formula for pseudodifferential operators with a bandlimited symbol. This reconstruction formula uses the diagonal entries of the matrix of the pseudodifferential operator with respect to a Gabor system. In addition, we prove several other uniqueness theorems that shed light on the relation between a pseudodifferential operators and its matrix with respect to a Gabor system.

Approximation of Fourier Integral Operators by Gabor multipliers

A general principle says that the matrix of a Fourier integral operator with respect to wave packets is concentrated near the curve of propagation. We prove a precise version of this principle for Fourier integral operators with a smooth phase and a symbol in the Sjoestrand class and use Gabor frames as wave packets. The almost diagonalization of such Fourier integral operators suggests a specific approximation by (a sum of) elementary operators, namely modified Gabor multipliers. We derive error estimates for such approximations. The methods are taken from time-frequency analysis.

Banach Gabor frames with Hermite functions: polyanalytic spaces from the Heisenberg group

Gabor frames with Hermite functions are equivalent to sampling sequences in true Fock spaces of polyanalytic functions. In the L^2-case, such an equivalence follows from the unitarity of the polyanalytic Bargmann transform. We will introduce Banach spaces of polyanalytic functions and investigate the mapping properties of the polyanalytic Bargmann transform on modulation spaces. By applying the theory of coorbit spaces and localized frames to the Fock representation of the Heisenberg group, we derive explicit polyanalytic sampling theorems which can be seen as a polyanalytic version of the lattice sampling theorem discussed by J. M. Whittaker in Chapter 5 of his book "Interpolatory Function Theory".

The Range of Localization Operators and Lifting Theorems for Modulation and Bargmann-Fock Spaces

We study the range of time-frequency localization operators acting on modulation spaces and prove a lifting theorem. As an application we also characterize the range of Gabor multipliers, and, in the realm of complex analysis, we characterize the range of certain Toeplitz operators on weighted Bargmann-Fock spaces. The main tools are the construction of canonical isomorphisms between modulation spaces of Hilbert-type and a refined version of the spectral invariance of pseudodifferential operators. On the technical level we prove a new class of inequalities for weighted gamma functions.

Noncommutative Approximation: Inverse-Closed Subalgebras and Off-Diagonal Decay of Matrices

We investigate two systematic constructions of inverse-closed subalgebras of a given Banach algebra or operator algebra A, both of which are inspired by classical principles of approximation theory. The first construction requires a closed derivation or a commutative automorphism group on A and yields a family of smooth inverse-closed subalgebras of A that resemble the usual Holder-Zygmund spaces. The second construction starts with a graded sequence of subspaces of A and yields a class of inverse-closed subalgebras that resemble the classical approximation spaces. We prove a theorem of Jackson-Bernstein type to show that in certain cases both constructions are equivalent. These results about abstract Banach algebras are applied to algebras of infinite matrices with off-diagonal decay. In particular, we obtain new and unexpected conditions of off-diagonal decay that are preserved under matrix inversion.

Convolution-Dominated Operators on Discrete Groups

We study infinite matrices $A$ indexed by a discrete group $G$ that are dominated by a convolution operator in the sense that $|(Ac)(x)| \leq (a \ast |c|)(x)$ for $x\in G$ and some $a\in \ell ^1(G)$. This class of "convolution-dominated" matrices forms a Banach-*-algebra contained in the algebra of bounded operators on $\ell ^2(G)$. Our main result shows that the inverse of a convolution-dominated matrix is again convolution-dominated, provided that $G$ is amenable and rigidly symmetric. For abelian groups this result goes back to Gohberg, Baskakov, and others, for non-abelian groups completely different techniques are required, such as generalized $L^1$-algebras and the symmetry of group algebras.

Gabor (Super)Frames with Hermite Functions

We investigate vector-valued Gabor frames (sometimes called Gabor superframes) based on Hermite functions $H_n$. Let $h= (H_0, H_1, ..., H_n)$ be the vector of the first $n+1$ Hermite functions. We give a complete characterization of all lattices $Λ\subseteq \bR ^2$ such that the Gabor system $\{e^{2πi λ_2 t} \boh (t-λ_1): λ= (λ_1, λ_2) \in Λ\}$ is a frame for $L^2 (\bR, \bC ^{n+1})$. As a corollary we obtain sufficient conditions for a single Hermite function to generate a Gabor frame and a new estimate for the lower frame bound. The main tools are growth estimates for the Weierstrass $σ$-function, a new type of interpolation problem for entire functions on the Bargmann-Fock space, and structural results about vector-valued Gabor frames.

Random Sampling of Entire Functions of Exponential Type in Several Variables

We consider the problem of random sampling for band-limited functions. When can a band-limited function $f$ be recovered from randomly chosen samples $f(x_j), j\in \mathbb{N}$? We estimate the probability that a sampling inequality of the form A\|f\|_2^2 \leq \sum_{j\in \mathbb{N}} |f(x_j)|^2 \leq B \|f\|_2^2 hold uniformly all functions $f\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with supp $\hat{f} \subseteq [-1/2,1/2]^d$ or some subset of \bdl functions. In contrast to discrete models, the space of band-limited functions is infinite-dimensional and its functions "live" on the unbounded set $\mathbb{R}^d$. This fact raises new problems and leads to both negative and positive results. (a) With probability one, the sampling inequality fails for any reasonable definition of a random set on $\mathbb{R}^d$, e.g., for spatial Poisson processes or uniform distribution over disjoint cubes. (b) With overwhelming probability, the sampling inequality holds for certain compact subsets of the space of band-limited functions and for sufficiently large sampling size.

preprint2007arXiv

Banach algebras of pseudodifferential operators and their almost diagonalization

We define new symbol classes for pseudodifferntial operators and investigate their pseudodifferential calculus. The symbol classes are parametrized by commutative convolution algebras. To every solid convolution algebra over a lattice we associate a symbol class. Then every operator with such a symbol is almost diagonal with respect to special wave packets (coherent states or Gabor frames), and the rate of almost diagonalization is described precisely by the underlying convolution algebra. Furthermore, the corresponding class of pseudodifferential operators is a Banach algebra of bounded operators on $L^2 $. If a version of Wiener's lemma holds for the underlying convolution algebra, then the algebra of pseudodifferential operators is closed under inversion. The theory contains as a special case the fundamental results about Sjöstrand's class and yields a new proof of a theorem of Beals about the Hörmander class of order 0.

Unimodular Fourier multipliers for modulation spaces

We investigate the boundedness of unimodular Fourier multipliers on modulation spaces. Surprisingly, the multipliers with general symbol $e^{i|ξ|^α}$, where $α\in[0, 2]$, are bounded on all modulation spaces, but, in general, fail to be bounded on the usual $L^p$-spaces. As a consequence, the phase-space concentration of the solutions to the free Schrödinger and wave equations are preserved. As a byproduct, we also obtain boundedness results on modulation spaces for singular multipliers $|ξ|^{-δ} \sin (|ξ|^α)$ for $ 0 \leq δ\leq α$.

Symbolic calculus and Fredholm property for localization operators

We study the composition of time-ffrequency localization operators (wavepacket operators) and develop a symbolic calculus of such operators on modulation spaces. The use of time-frequency methods (phase space methods) allows the use of rough symbols of ultra-rapid growth in place of smooth symbols in the standard classes. As the main application it is shown that, in general, a localization operators possesses the Fredholm property, and thus its range is closed in the target space.
