Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.cJ/ψ\to Λ\barΣ^0η+\mathrm{c.c}

Based on a sample of (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, a partial-wave analysis of J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.c J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c} is performed for the first time. The dominant contributions are found to be excited ΛΛ states with JP=1/2−J^P=1/2^- and JP=1/2+J^P=1/2^+ in the ηΛηΛ mass spectra. The measured masses and widths are M=1668.8±3.1±21.2M=1668.8\pm3.1\pm21.2 MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=52.7±4.2±17.8Γ=52.7\pm4.2\pm17.8 MeV for the Λ(1670)Λ(1670), and M=1881.5±16.5±20.3M=1881.5\pm16.5\pm20.3 MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=82.4±18.2±8.9Γ=82.4\pm18.2\pm8.9 MeV for the Λ(1810)Λ(1810), respectively. The branching fraction is determined to be B(J/ψ→ΛΣˉ0η+c.c) \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to Λ\bar{ Σ}^0η+\mathrm{c.c}) = (3.44±0.11±0.13)×10−5(3.44 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Cross section measurement of e+e−→π0π0ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}ψ(3686) from s=\sqrt{s}= 4.008 GeV to 4.951 GeV

Using data samples with a total integrated luminosity of 22.1 fb−122.1~\rm fb^{-1} at center-of-mass energies between 4.008 and 4.951~GeV collected with the BESIII detector, the cross sections of e+e−→π0π0ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}ψ(3686) process are measured. The obtained cross sections are found to be approximately one-half of those of e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686), consistent with the isospin symmetry expectation. A coherent fit to the dressed cross sections is performed, with the Y(4230)Y(4230)~parameters fixed at the values measured in e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686). The significances of the Y(4390)Y(4390) and Y(4660)Y(4660) are both larger than 5σ5σ, and their masses and widths are consistent with the previous measurement in the e+e−→π+π−ψ(3686)e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}ψ(3686) process.

First Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fraction of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ

We apply a tag-and-probe method to precisely measure the absolute branching fraction of the decay ηc→γγη_c \to γγ with the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. Starting with a large initial sample of 2712.4±14.32712.4\pm 14.3 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events, a sample of 0.16 million ηcη_c events are tagged via the golden channel ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686)\to π^0 h_c, hc→γηch_c\to γη_c, effectively avoiding interference effects. The absolute branching fraction of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ is measured for the first time to be B(ηc→γγ)=(2.45±0.48stat.±0.09syst.)×10−4\mathcal{B}(η_c \to γγ) = (2.45 \pm 0.48_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.09_{\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-4}. Using the world average value of the total width of the ηcη_c, the partial decay width of ηc→γγη_c \to γγ is calculated to be Γ(ηc→γγ)=(7.48±1.48stat.±0.30syst.) keVΓ(η_c \to γγ) = (7.48 \pm 1.48_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.30_{\rm syst.})~{\rm keV}.

First Observation of D0(+)→Kˉωe+νeD^{0(+)}\to \bar Kωe^+ν_e and Determination of the Branching Fraction of Kˉ1(1270)→Kˉω\bar K_1(1270)\to \bar K ω

Using 20.3~fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the semileptonic decays D0→K−ωe+νeD^0\to K^-ωe^+ν_e and D+→KS0ωe+νeD^+\to K_S^0ωe^+ν_e with significances of 8.0σ8.0σ and 5.8σ5.8σ, respectively, including systematic uncertainties. Their decay branching fractions are measured to be B(D0→K−ωe+νe)=(9.3−1.9+2.1±0.7)×10−5{\cal B}(D^0\to K^-ωe^+ν_e)=(9.3^{+2.1}_{-1.9}\pm 0.7)\times10^{-5} and B(D+→KS0ωe+νe)=(6.6−1.8+2.0±0.6)×10−5{\cal B}(D^+\to K_S^0ωe^+ν_e)=(6.6^{+2.0}_{-1.8}\pm 0.6)\times10^{-5}. Combining with the latest measurements of D0(+)→K−π+π−(0)e+νeD^{0(+)}\to K^-π^+π^{-(0)} e^+ν_e and assuming Kˉ1(1270)\bar{K}_1(1270) to be the sole mediating resonance in all processes, the branching ratios are determined to be Γ(K1(1270)−→K−π+π−)Γ(K1(1270)−→K−ω)=3.4−0.7+0.8±0.3\frac{Γ(K_1(1270)^-\to K^-π^+π^-)}{Γ(K_1(1270)^-\to K^-ω)} = 3.4^{+0.8}_{-0.7} \pm 0.3 and Γ(Kˉ1(1270)0→K−π+π0)Γ(Kˉ1(1270)0→Kˉ0ω)=9.6−2.7+3.0±0.8\frac{Γ(\bar{K}_1(1270)^0\to K^-π^+π^0)}{Γ(\bar{K}_1(1270)^0\to \bar{K}^0ω)} = 9.6^{+3.0}_{-2.7} \pm 0.8. The combined branching fraction is determined to be B(Kˉ1(1270)→Kˉω)=(7.5±1.3±0.5)%\mathcal B(\bar{K}_1(1270)\to \bar{K}ω) = (7.5\pm 1.3 \pm 0.5)\%, which is the most precise measurement from a collider experiment. The first uncertainties are statistical, and the second are systematic.

Measurements of the absolute branching fractions of the Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} hadronic decays

Based on 4.5 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4599.53 MeV and 4698.82 MeV with the BESIII detector, the absolute branching fractions of twelve Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} hadronic decay modes are measured with a double-tag technique. A global least-square fit is implemented simultaneously among different decay modes at different energy points. This paper gives the most precise results on the branching fractions of different decay modes to date, with precision improved by a factor of 2 to 3. Among them, the branching fraction of Λc+→pK−π+Λ_{c}^{+}\to pK^{-}π^+ is determined to be (6.61±0.11±0.12)%(6.61\pm0.11\pm0.12)\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the e+e−→Λc+Λˉc−e^+e^-\toΛ_c^+\barΛ_c^- Born cross sections and the effective form factors (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm eff}|) at different energy points have been determined with the highest precision to date.

Search for a dark baryon in the Ξ−→π−+invisibleΞ^-\rightarrowπ^-+{\rm invisible} decay

A search for a dark baryon is performed for the first time in the two-body decay Ξ−→π−+invisibleΞ^-\rightarrowπ^-+{\rm invisible} using (10.087±0.044)×109(10.087\pm0.044)\times10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ events collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=3.097\,\mbox{GeV}$ with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. No significant signal is observed, and the 90% (95%) confidence level upper limits on the branching fraction B(Ξ−→π−+invisible)B(Ξ^-\rightarrowπ^-+{\rm invisible}) are determined to be 4.2×10−54.2\times10^{-5} (5.2×10−55.2\times10^{-5}), 6.9×10−56.9\times10^{-5} (8.4×10−58.4\times10^{-5}), 6.5×10−46.5\times10^{-4} (7.6×10−47.6\times10^{-4}), 1.1×10−41.1\times10^{-4} (1.3×10−41.3\times10^{-4}) and 4.5×10−54.5\times10^{-5} (5.5×10−55.5\times10^{-5}), under the dark baryon mass hypotheses of 1.07$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$, 1.10$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$, mΛm_Λ (1.116$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$), 1.13$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$, and 1.16$\,\mbox{GeV}/c^2$, respectively. The constraints obtained on the Wilson coefficients Cus,sLC_{u s, s}^L and Cus,sRC_{u s, s}^R are more stringent than the previous limits derived from the LHC searches for the colored mediators.

Measurement of branching fractions of Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} decays to Σ+ηΣ^{+} η and Σ+η′Σ^{+} η'

By analyzing e+e−e^+e^- collision data taken at center-of-mass energies s\sqrt{s} between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb−1\rm 4.5~fb^{-1}, we study the hadronic decays Λc+→Σ+ηΛ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow Σ^{+} η and Λc+→Σ+η′Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow Σ^{+} η^{\prime} using the single-tag method. The branching fraction ratio of Λc+→Σ+ηΛ_{c}^+ \rightarrow Σ^+ η relative to Λc+→Σ+π0Λ_{c}^+ \rightarrow Σ^+ π^0 is determined to be 0.305±0.046stat.±0.007syst.0.305 \pm 0.046_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.007_{\rm syst.}, and that of Λc+→Σ+η′Λ_{c}^+ \rightarrow Σ^+ η' relative to Λc+→Σ+ωΛ_{c}^+ \rightarrow Σ^+ ω is 0.336±0.094stat.±0.037syst.0.336 \pm 0.094_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.037_{\rm syst.}. The ratio of B(Λc+→Σ+η′)B(Λc+→Σ+η)\frac{\mathcal{B}\left(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow Σ^{+} η'\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left(Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow Σ^{+} η\right)} is determined to be 1.73±0.22stat.±0.16syst.1.73 \pm 0.22_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.16_{\rm syst.}. These results enrich our knowledge of charmed baryon decays.

Investigation of the ΔI=1/2ΔI = 1/2 rule and test of CP violation through the measurement of decay asymmetry parameters in Ξ−Ξ^- decays

Using (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times 10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, numerous Ξ−Ξ^- and ΛΛ decay asymmetry parameters are simultaneously determined from the process J/ψ→Ξ−Ξˉ+→Λ(pπ−)π−Λˉ(nˉπ0)π+J/ψ\to Ξ^- \barΞ^+ \to Λ(pπ^-) π^- \barΛ(\bar{n} π^0) π^+ and its charge-conjugate channel. The precisions of α0α_0 for Λ→nπ0Λ\to nπ^0 and αˉ0\barα_0 for Λˉ→nˉπ0\barΛ \to \bar{n}π^0 compared to world averages are improved by factors of 4 and 1.7, respectively. The ratio of decay asymmetry parameters of Λ→nπ0Λ\to nπ^0 to that of Λ→pπ−Λ\to pπ^-, ⟨α0⟩/⟨αΛ−⟩\langle α_0 \rangle/ \langle α_{Λ-} \rangle , is determined to be 0.873±0.012−0.010+0.011 0.873 \pm 0.012^{+0.011}_{-0.010}, where the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The ratio is smaller than unity more than 5σ5σ, which signifies the existence of the ΔI=3/2ΔI = 3/2 transition in ΛΛ for the first time. Beside, we test for CP violation in Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^- \to Λπ^- and in Λ→nπ0Λ\to n π^{0} with the best precision to date.

Search for hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness in e+e−→K+Ds∗−D∗0+c.c.e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow K^+ D_{s}^{*-} D^{*0}+c.c.

We report a search for a heavier partner of the recently observed Zcs(3985)−Z_{cs}(3985)^{-} state, denoted as Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -}, in the process e+e−→K+Ds∗−D∗0+c.c.e^{+} e^{-}\rightarrow K^{+}D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0}+c.c., based on e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies of s=4.661\sqrt{s}=4.661, 4.682 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector. The Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} is of interest as it is expected to be a candidate for a hidden-charm and open-strange tetraquark. A partial-reconstruction technique is used to isolate K+K^+ recoil-mass spectra, which are probed for a potential contribution from Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime -}\to D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0} (c.c.c.c.). We find an excess of Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime -}\rightarrow D_{s}^{*-}D^{*0} (c.c.c.c.) candidates with a significance of 2.1σ2.1σ, after considering systematic uncertainties, at a mass of (4123.5±0.7stat.±4.7syst.) MeV/c2(4123.5\pm0.7_\mathrm{stat.}\pm4.7_\mathrm{syst.})\ \mathrm{MeV}/c^{2}. As the data set is limited in size, the upper limits are evaluated at the 90\% confidence level on the product of the Born cross sections (σBornσ^{\mathrm{Born}}) and the branching fraction (B\mathcal{B}) of Zcs′−→Ds∗−D∗0Z_{cs}^{\prime-}\rightarrow D_{s}^{*-}D^{* 0}, under different assumptions of the Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} mass from 4.120 to 4.140 MeV and of the width from 10 to 50 MeV at the three center-of-mass energies. The upper limits of σBorn⋅Bσ^{\rm Born}\cdot\mathcal{B} are found to be at the level of O(1)\mathcal{O}(1) pb at each energy. Larger data samples are needed to confirm the Zcs′−Z_{cs}^{\prime -} state and clarify its nature in the coming years.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay Ds+→K+π+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^+π^+π^-

Using 6.326.32 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay Ds+→K+π+π−D^+_s \to K^+π^+π^- and determine the amplitudes of the various intermediate states. The branching fractions of the dominant intermediate processes Ds+→K+ρ0,ρ0→π+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^+ρ^0, ρ^0 \to π^+π^- and Ds+→K∗(892)0π+,K∗(892)0→K+π−D_{s}^{+} \to K^*(892)^0π^+, K^*(892)^0 \to K^+π^- are determined to be (1.96±0.19stat.±0.23syst.)×10−3(1.96\pm0.19_{\rm stat.}\pm0.23_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3} and (1.85±0.12stat.±0.13syst.)×10−3(1.85\pm0.12_{\rm stat.}\pm0.13_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}, respectively. Cross section measurements of the processes e+e−→ωπ0e^+e^- \rightarrow ωπ^{0} and ωηωη at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV

The Born cross sections of the processes e+e−→ωπ0e^+e^- \rightarrow ωπ^{0} and e+e−→ωηe^+e^- \rightarrow ωη are measured at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV using a total integrated luminosity of 22.7 fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Λc+→pK−e+νeΛ_c^+\rightarrow pK^-e^+ν_e decay is observed with a significance of 8.2σ8.2σ and the branching fraction is measured to be B(Λc+→pK−e+νe)=(0.88±0.17stat.±0.07syst.)×10−3\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\rightarrow pK^- e^+ν_e)=(0.88\pm0.17_{\rm stat.}\pm0.07_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-3}. Measurement of ΛΛ baryon polarization in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV

Using a data sample of ψ(3770)ψ(3770) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb−1^{-1}, we report a measurement of ΛΛ spin polarization in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^+e^-\rightarrowΛ\barΛ at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV. The significance of polarization is found to be 2σσ including the systematic uncertainty, which implies a zero phase between the transition amplitudes of the ΛΛˉΛ\barΛ helicity states. This phase can be interpreted in terms of psionic form factors, and is determined to be ΔΦΨΔΦ^Ψ = ΦEΨ−ΦMΨΦ^Ψ_{E} - Φ^Ψ_{M} = (71−46+66(71^{+66}_{-46} ±\pm 5)∘^{\circ}. Similarly, the ratio between the form factors is found to be RψR^ψ = ∣GEΨ/GMΨ∣|G^Ψ_{E}/G^Ψ_{M}| = 0.48−0.07+0.120.48^{+0.12}_{-0.07} ±\pm 0.04. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements in Λ(1520)Λ(1520) Photoproduction at 8.2-8.8 GeV

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the Λ(1520)Λ(1520) in the photoproduction reaction γp→Λ(1520)K+γp\rightarrow Λ(1520)K^+, via its subsequent decay to K−pK^{-}p. The measurement was performed as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized photon beam with Eγ=E_γ= 8.2-8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, −(t−t0)-(t-t_\text{0}). We compare the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are dominant in Λ(1520)Λ(1520) photoproduction.

Measurement of the D→K−π+π+π−D \to K^-π^+π^+π^- and D→K−π+π0D \to K^-π^+π^0 coherence factors and average strong-phase differences in quantum-correlated DDˉ{D\bar{D}} decays

The decays D→K−π+π+π−D\to K^-π^+π^+π^- and D→K−π+π0D \to K^-π^+π^0 are studied in a sample of quantum-correlated DDˉD\bar{D} pairs produced through the process e+e−→ψ(3770)→DDˉe^+e^- \to ψ(3770) \to D\bar{D}, exploiting a data set collected by the BESIII experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1^{-1}. Here DD indicates a quantum superposition of a D0D^0 and a Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 meson. By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle γγ of the Unitarity Triangle in B−→DK−B^- \to DK^- decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be RK3π=0.52−0.10+0.12R_{K3π}=0.52^{+0.12}_{-0.10} and RKππ0=0.78±0.04R_{Kππ^0}=0.78 \pm 0.04, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are δDK3π=(167−19+31)∘δ_D^{K3π}=\left(167^{+31}_{-19}\right)^\circ and δDKππ0=(196−15+14)∘δ_D^{Kππ^0}=\left(196^{+14}_{-15}\right)^\circ, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the D→K−π+π+π−D \to K^-π^+π^+π^- to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of γγ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6∘^\circ.

The radiative hyperon decay Λ→nγΛ\to nγ is studied using (10087±44)×106(10087\pm44)\times 10^6 J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII. The absolute branching fraction of the decay Λ→nγΛ\to nγ is determined with a significance of 5.6σσ to be [0.832±0.038(stat.)±0.054(syst.)]×10−3[0.832\pm0.038(\rm stat.)\pm0.054(\rm syst.)]\times10^{-3}, which lies significantly below the current PDG value. By analyzing the joint angular distribution of the decay products, the first determination of the decay asymmetry αγα_γ is reported with a value of −0.16±0.10(stat.)±0.05(syst.)-0.16\pm0.10(\rm stat.)\pm0.05(\rm syst.).

Measurement of the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D0→K+π−π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0 and search for D0→K+π−π0π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0

Using 2.93 fb−12.93\,\rm fb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773\,GeV with the BESIII detector, we present a measurement of the branching fraction of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed (DCS) decay D0→K+π−π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0 and a search for the DCS decay D0→K+π−π0π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0. The branching fraction of D0→K+π−π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0 is determined to be [3.13−0.56+0.60(stat)±0.09(syst)]×10−4[3.13^{+0.60}_{-0.56}({\rm stat}) \pm 0.09({\rm syst})] \times 10^{-4}. No signal is observed for D0→K+π−π0π0D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0 and an upper limit of 3.6×10−43.6 \times 10^{-4} is set on the branching fraction at the 90\% C.L. We combine these results with the world-average branching fractions of their counterpart Cabibbo-favored decays to determine the ratios of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed over the Cabibbo-favored branching fractions, B(D0→K+π−π0)/B(D0→K−π+π0)=(0.22±0.04)%{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^+π^-π^0)/{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0)=(0.22\pm 0.04)\%~and B(D0→K+π−π0π0)/B(D0→K−π+π0π0)<0.40%{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^+π^-π^0π^0)/{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0π^0)<0.40\% at the 90\% C.L., which correspond to (0.75±0.14)tan⁡4θC(0.75\pm 0.14)\tan^{4} θ_C~and 1.37×tan⁡4θC1.37\times \tan^{4} θ_C, respectively, where θCθ_C is the Cabibbo angle.

Measurement of the total and leptonic decay widths of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance with an energy scan method at BESIII

Using e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data sets collected with the BESIII detector, we measure the cross sections of the processes e+e−→e+e−e^+e^- \to e^+e^- and e+e−→μ+μ−e^+e^- \to μ^+μ^- at fifteen center-of-mass energy points in the vicinity of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance. By a simultaneous fit to the measured, center-of-mass energy dependent cross sections of the two processes, the combined quantities ΓeeΓee/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{ee} / Γ_{\rm tot} and ΓeeΓμμ/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{μμ} / Γ_{\rm tot} are determined to be (0.346±0.0090.346 \pm 0.009) and (0.335±0.0060.335 \pm 0.006) keV, respectively, where ΓeeΓ_{ee}, ΓμμΓ_{μμ}, and ΓtotΓ_{\rm tot} are the electronic, muonic, and total decay widths of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance, respectively. Using the resultant ΓeeΓμμ/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{μμ} / Γ_{\rm tot} and ΓeeΓee/ΓtotΓ_{ee} Γ_{ee} / Γ_{\rm tot}, the ratio Γee/ΓμμΓ_{ee} / Γ_{μμ} is calculated to be 1.031±0.0151.031 \pm 0.015, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton universality within about two standard deviations. Assuming lepton universality and using the branching fraction of the J/ψJ/ψ leptonic decay measured by BESIII in 2013, ΓtotΓ_{\rm tot} and ΓllΓ_{ll} are determined to be (93.0±2.193.0 \pm 2.1) and (5.56±0.115.56 \pm 0.11) keV, respectively, where ΓllΓ_{ll} is the average leptonic decay width of the J/ψJ/ψ resonance.

By analyzing an electron-positron collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−12.93\,\rm fb^{-1} taken at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we obtain for the first time the absolute branching fractions for seven D0D^0 and D+D^+ hadronic decay modes and search for the hadronic decay D0→KS0KS0π0D^0\to K^0_S K^0_Sπ^0 with much improved sensitivity. The results are B(D0→KS0π0π0π0)=(7.64±0.30±0.29)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^0_Sπ^0π^0π^0 )=( 7.64\pm 0.30\pm 0.29)\times 10^{-3}, B(D0→K−π+π0π0π0)=(9.54±0.30±0.31)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-π^+π^0π^0π^0 )=( 9.54\pm 0.30\pm 0.31)\times 10^{-3}, B(D0→KS0π+π−π0π0)=(12.66±0.45±0.43)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^0_Sπ^+π^-π^0π^0)=(12.66\pm 0.45\pm 0.43)\times 10^{-3}, B(D+→KS0π+π0π0)=(29.04±0.62±0.87)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^0π^0 )=(29.04\pm 0.62\pm 0.87)\times 10^{-3}, B(D+→KS0π+π+π−π0)=(15.28±0.57±0.60)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^+π^-π^0)=(15.28\pm 0.57\pm 0.60)\times 10^{-3}, B(D+→KS0π+π0π0π0)=(5.54±0.44±0.32)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^0_Sπ^+π^0π^0π^0)=( 5.54\pm 0.44\pm 0.32)\times 10^{-3}, B(D+→K−π+π+π0π0)=(4.95±0.26±0.19)×10−3{\mathcal B}(D^+\to K^-π^+π^+π^0π^0 )=( 4.95\pm 0.26\pm 0.19)\times 10^{-3}, B(D0→KS0KS0π0)<1.57×10−4{\mathcal B}({D^0\to K^0_S K^0_Sπ^0}) < 1.57 \times 10^{-4} at the 90\% confidence level. Observation of resonance structures in e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) and mass measurement of ψ2(3823)ψ_2(3823)

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.3 fb−1\rm fb^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.234.23 to 4.704.70 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the product of the e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) cross section and the branching fraction B[ψ2(3823)→γχc1]\mathcal{B}[ψ_2(3823)\to γχ_{c1}]. For the first time, resonance structure is observed in the cross section line shape of e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ_2(3823) with significances exceeding 5σ5σ. A fit to data with two coherent Breit-Wigner resonances modeling the s\sqrt{s}-dependent cross section yields M(R1)=4406.9±17.2±4.5M(R_1)=4406.9\pm 17.2\pm 4.5 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R1)=128.1±37.2±2.3Γ(R_1)=128.1\pm 37.2\pm 2.3 MeV, and M(R2)=4647.9±8.6±0.8M(R_2)=4647.9\pm 8.6\pm 0.8 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R2)=33.1±18.6±4.1Γ(R_2)=33.1\pm 18.6\pm 4.1 MeV. Though weakly disfavored by the data, a single resonance with M(R)=4417.5±26.2±3.5M(R)=4417.5\pm26.2\pm3.5 MeV/c2c^2, Γ(R)=245±48±13Γ(R)=245\pm48\pm13 MeV is also possible to interpret data. This observation deepens our understanding of the nature of the vector charmoniumlike states. The mass of the ψ2(3823)ψ_2(3823) state is measured as (3823.12±0.43±0.13)(3823.12\pm 0.43\pm 0.13) MeV/c2c^2, which is the most precise measurement to date.

The decay channel hc→ppˉηh_{c}\to p\bar{p}η is observed for the first time with a significance greater than 5σ5σ and a branching fraction of (6.41±1.74±0.53±1.00)×10−4\left( {6.41 \pm 1.74 \pm 0.53 \pm 1.00} \right) \times {10^{ -4}}, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and that from the branching fraction of ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686)\toπ^{0}h_{c}. Strong evidence for the decay hc→ppˉπ+π−π0{h_c} \to p\bar{p}{π^+}{π^-}{π^0} is found with a significance of 4.9σ4.9σ and a branching fraction of (3.84±0.83±0.69±0.58)×10−3\left( {3.84 \pm 0.83 \pm0.69} \pm 0.58 \right) \times {10^{ - 3}}. The significances include systematic uncertainties. No clear signal of the decay hc→ppˉπ0h_c\to p\bar{p}π^{0} is found, and an upper limit of 6.59×10−46.59\times 10^{-4} on its branching fraction is set at the 90% confidence level.

Search for photoproduction of axion-like particles at GlueX

We present a search for axion-like particles, aa, produced in photon-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of approximately 4 GeV, focusing on the scenario where the aa-gluon coupling is dominant. The search uses a→γγa\toγγ and a→π+π−π0a\toπ^+π^-π^0 decays, and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 168 pb−1^{-1} collected with the GlueX detector. The search for a→γγa\toγγ decays is performed in the mass range of 180<ma<480180 < m_a < 480 MeV, while the search for a→π+π−π0a\toπ^+π^-π^0 decays explores the 600<ma<720600 < m_a < 720 MeV region. No evidence for a signal is found, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the aa-gluon coupling strength. These constraints are the most stringent to date over much of the mass ranges considered.

Search for the decay D0→π0ννˉD^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν

We present the first experimental search for the rare charm decay D0→π0ννˉD^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν. It is based on an e+e−e^+e^- collision sample consisting of 10.6×10610.6\times10^{6} pairs of D0Dˉ0D^0\bar{D}^0 mesons collected by the BESIII detector at s\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93~fb−1^{-1}. A data-driven method is used to ensure the reliability of the background modeling. No significant D0→π0ννˉD^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν signal is observed in data and an upper limit of the branching fraction is set to be 2.1×10−42.1\times 10^{-4} at the 90%\% confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint on charmed-hadron decays into dineutrino final states.

Search for the decay hc→π0J/ψh_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ

A search for the decay hc→π0J/ψh_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ is performed using a sample of hch_c produced in the reaction e+e−→π+π−hce^+e^-\rightarrowπ^+π^-h_c. The data samples were collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.189 and 4.437 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb−1^{-1}. No significant signal is observed. Upper limits on the branching ratio B(hc→π0J/ψ)/B(hc→γηc→γK+K−π0)\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ)/\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowγη_c\rightarrowγK^+K^-π^0) and on the branching fraction B(hc→π0J/ψ)\mathcal{B}(h_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ) are determined to be 7.5×10−27.5\times10^{-2} and 4.7×10−44.7\times10^{-4} at 90%90\% confidence level, respectively. The latter is derived from the former using the measured branching fraction of the normalization channel. This is the first determination of the upper limit of the decay hc→π0J/ψh_c\rightarrowπ^0J/ψ.

The Born cross sections of the e+e−→D∗+D∗−e^+e^-\to D^{*+}D^{*-} and e+e−→D∗+D−e^+e^-\to D^{*+}D^{-} processes are measured using e+e−e^+e^- collision data collected with the BESIII experiment at center-of-mass energies from 4.085 to 4.600 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15.7 fb−115.7~{\rm fb}^{-1}. The results are consistent with and more precise than the previous measurements by the Belle, Babar and CLEO collaborations. The measurements are essential for understanding the nature of vector charmonium and charmonium-like states.

Using the data samples collected in the energy range from 3.773 to 4.600 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the dressed cross sections as a function of center-of-mass energy for e+e−→K+K−π+π−(π0)e^+e^-\rightarrow K^+K^-π^+π^-(π^0), K+K−K+K−(π0)K^+K^-K^+K^-(π^0), π+π−π+π−(π0)π^+π^-π^+π^-(π^0), and ppˉπ+π−(π0)p\bar{p}π^+π^-(π^0). The cross sections for e+e−→K+K−K+K−π0e^+e^-\rightarrow K^+K^-K^+K^-π^0, ppˉπ+π−(π0)p\bar{p}π^+π^-(π^0) are the first measurements. Cross sections for the other five channels are much more precise than previous results in this energy region. We also search for charmonium and charmonium-like resonances, such as the Y(4230)Y(4230), decaying into the same final states. We find evidence of the ψ(4040)ψ(4040) decaying to π+π−π+π−π0π^+π^-π^+π^-π^0 with a statistical significance of 3.6σ3.6σ. Evidence for Zc±Z_{c}^{\pm} decays into the ρ±ηcρ^{\pm} η_{c} final state

We study e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions with a π+π−π0ηcπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}η_{c} final state using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies s=4.226\sqrt{s}=4.226, 4.2584.258, 4.3584.358, 4.4164.416, and 4.6004.600 GeV. Evidence for the decay $\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac$ is reported with a statistical significance of 3.9σ3.9σ with various systematic uncertainties taken into account at s=4.226\sqrt{s} = 4.226 GeV, and the Born cross section times branching fraction $σ^{B}(\EE\to \pimp\zcpm)\times \BR(\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac)$ is measured to be (48±11±11) pb(48 \pm 11 \pm 11)\,\rm{pb}. The $\zcpm\to \rhopm\etac$ signal is not significant at the other center-of-mass energies and the corresponding upper limits are determined. In addition, no significant signal is observed in a search for $\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm}\etac$ with the same data samples. The ratios $R_{\zc}=\BR(\zcpm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcpm\to π^{\pm} \jpsi)$ and $R_{\zcp}=\BR(\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcppm\to π^{\pm} \hc)$ are obtained and used to discriminate between different theoretical interpretations of the $\zcpm$ and $\zcppm$.

Measurement of beam asymmetry for π−Δ++π^-Δ^{++} photoproduction on the proton at EγE_γ=8.5 GeV

We report a measurement of the π−π^- photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction γ⃗p→π−Δ++\vecγ p \rightarrow π^- Δ^{++} using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2--8.8 GeV. The asymmetry ΣΣ is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer tt to the Δ++Δ^{++} and compared to phenomenological models. We find that ΣΣ varies as a function of tt: negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of ∣t∣|t|. The reaction can be described theoretically by tt-channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. This is the first measurement of the process at this energy.

The Born cross sections of e+e−→Σ0Σˉ0e^{+}e^{-}\to Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0} are measured at center-of-mass energies from 2.38642.3864 to 3.02003.0200 GeV using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 328.5328.5 pb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The analysis makes use of a novel reconstruction method for energies near production threshold, while a single-tag method is employed at other center-of-mass energies. The measured cross sections are consistent with earlier results from BaBar, with a substantially improved precision. The cross-section lineshape can be well described by a perturbative QCD-driven energy function. In addition, the effective form factors of the Σ0Σ^{0} baryon are determined. The results provide precise experimental input for testing various theoretical predictions.

Weak phases and CP-symmetry tests in sequential decays of entangled double-strange baryons

Using a sample of 1.31×1091.31\times10^9 J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the electron-positron collider BEPCII, we analyse the full J/ψ→J/ψ\to Ξ−Ξ‾+Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+, Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\to Λπ^-, Λ→pπ−Λ\to pπ^-, Ξ‾+→Λ‾π+\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+, Λ‾→p‾π+\overlineΛ\to\overline{p}π^+ decay chain. A new method, exploiting the fact that the Ξ−Ξ‾+Ξ^-\overlineΞ^+ pair is entangled and sequentially decaying, and where the complete decay chains are reconstructed, is applied for the first time. This enables precision measurements of the decay parameters for the Ξ−→Λπ−Ξ^-\toΛπ^- decay (αΞα_Ξ, ϕΞϕ_Ξ) as well as the Ξ‾+→Λ‾π+\overlineΞ^+\to\overlineΛπ^+ decay (α‾Ξ\overlineα_Ξ, ϕ‾Ξ\overlineϕ_Ξ). From the decay parameters, two independent CP tests were performed, quantified by the observables ACPΞA_{\rm CP}^Ξ and ΔϕΞΔϕ_Ξ. Our results, ACPΞA_{\rm CP}^Ξ = (6.0±13.4±5.6)×10−3(6.0\pm13.4\pm5.6)\times10^{-3} and ΔϕΞ=(−4.8±13.7±2.9)×10−3 radΔϕ_Ξ= (-4.8\pm13.7\pm2.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm rad}, are consistent with CP symmetry. Furthermore, our method enables a separation of strong and weak Ξ→ΛπΞ\toΛπ decay amplitudes. This results in the first direct measurement of the weak phase difference for any baryon decay. The result is found to be (ξP−ξS)=(1.2±3.4±0.8)×10−2(ξ_{P} - ξ_{S}) = (1.2\pm3.4\pm0.8)\times10^{-2} rad and is one of the most precise tests of CP symmetry for strange baryons. The strong phase difference is measured to be (δP−δS)=(−4.0±3.3±1.7)×10−2(δ_P - δ_S) = (-4.0\pm3.3\pm1.7)\times10^{-2} rad. In addition, we provide an independent measurement of the recently debated ΛΛ decay parameter, αΛ=0.757±0.011±0.008α_Λ = 0.757 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008 . The ΛΛ‾Λ\overlineΛ asymmetry is measured to be ACPΛ=(−3.7±11.7±9.0)×10−3A_{\rm CP}^Λ = (-3.7\pm11.7\pm9.0)\times10^{-3}.

We report the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 decays to KS,L0π+π−K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- using a sample of 2.93 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results provide the key inputs for a binned model-independent determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 with BB decays. Using our results, the decay model sensitivity to the γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 measurement is expected to be between 0.7∘^{\circ} and 1.2∘^{\circ}, approximately a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. The improved precision of this work ensures that measurements of γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 will not be limited by knowledge of strong phases for the next decade. Furthermore, our results provide critical input for other flavor-physics investigations, including charm mixing, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Erratum to "Measurement of the e+e−→π+π−e^+e^-\toπ^+π^- cross section between 600 and 900 MeV using initial state radiation"

In Phys. Lett. B 753, 629-638 (2016) [arXiv:1507.08188] the BESIII collaboration published a cross section measurement of the process e+e−→π+π−e^+e^-\to π^+ π^- in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV. In this erratum we report a corrected evaluation of the statistical errors in terms of a fully propagated covariance matrix. The correction also yields a reduced statistical uncertainty for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, which now reads as aμππ,LO(600−900 MeV)=(368.2±1.5stat±3.3syst)×10−10a_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}(600 - 900\,\mathrm{MeV}) = (368.2 \pm 1.5_{\rm stat} \pm 3.3_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-10}. The central values of the cross section measurement and of aμππ,LOa_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}, as well as the systematic uncertainties remain unchanged.

Future Physics Programme of BESIII

There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in the subjects of hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like XYZXYZ states at BESIII and BB factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related X(1835)X(1835) meson state at BESIII, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESIII over the remaining lifetime of BEPCII operation. This survey will help in the optimization of the data-taking plan over the coming years, and provides physics motivation for the possible upgrade of BEPCII to higher luminosity.

Inclusive charged and neutral particle multiplicity distributions in χcJχ_{cJ} and J/ψJ/ψ decays

Using a sample of 106 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) decays, ψ(3686)→γχcJ(J=0,1,2)ψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ} (J = 0, 1, 2) and ψ(3686)→γχcJ,χcJ→γJ/ψψ(3686) \to γχ_{cJ}, χ_{cJ} \to γJ/ψ (J=1,2)(J = 1, 2) events are utilized to study inclusive χcJ→χ_{cJ} \to anything, χcJ→χ_{cJ} \to hadrons, and J/ψ→J/ψ\to anything distributions, including distributions of the number of charged tracks, electromagnetic calorimeter showers, and π0π^0s, and to compare them with distributions obtained from the BESIII Monte Carlo simulation. Information from each Monte Carlo simulated decay event is used to construct matrices connecting the detected distributions to the input predetection "produced" distributions. Assuming these matrices also apply to data, they are used to predict the analogous produced distributions of the decay events. Using these, the charged particle multiplicities are compared with results from MARK I. Further, comparison of the distributions of the number of photons in data with those in Monte Carlo simulation indicates that G-parity conservation should be taken into consideration in the simulation.

Measurement of proton electromagnetic form factors in e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \to p\bar{p} in the energy region 2.00-3.08 GeV

The process of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is studied at 22 center-of-mass energy points (s\sqrt{s}) from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV, exploiting 688.5~pb−1^{-1} of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section~(σppˉσ_{p\bar{p}}) of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is measured with the energy-scan technique and it is found to be consistent with previously published data, but with much improved accuracy. In addition, the electromagnetic form-factor ratio (∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}|) and the value of the effective (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm{eff}}|), electric (∣GE∣|G_E|) and magnetic (∣GM∣|G_M|) form factors are measured by studying the helicity angle of the proton at 16 center-of-mass energy points. ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}| and ∣GM∣|G_M| are determined with high accuracy, providing uncertainties comparable to data in the space-like region, and ∣GE∣|G_E| is measured for the first time. We reach unprecedented accuracy, and precision results in the time-like region provide information to improve our understanding of the proton inner structure and to test theoretical models which depend on non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics.

Using 2.93 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII, we measure the branching fractions of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D→ωππD \to ωππ to be B(D0→ωπ+π−)=(1.33±0.16±0.12)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^+π^-) = (1.33 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-3} and B(D+→ωπ+π0)=(3.87±0.83±0.25)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to ωπ^+π^0) =(3.87 \pm 0.83 \pm 0.25)\times 10^{-3}, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The statistical significances are 12.9σ12.9σ and 7.7σ7.7 σ, respectively. The precision of B(D0→ωπ+π−)\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^+π^-) is improved by a factor of 2.1 over the CLEO measurement, and B(D+→ωπ+π0)\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to ωπ^+π^0) is measured for the first time. No significant signal of B(D0→ωπ0π0)\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^0π^0) is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction is B(D0→ωπ0π0)<1.10×10−3\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to ωπ^0π^0) < 1.10 \times 10^{-3} at the 90%90\% confidence level. The branching fractions of D→ηππD\to ηππ are also measured and consistent with existing results.

Measurement of the cross section for e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} and observation of an excited ΞΞ baryon

Using a total of 11.0 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data with center-of-mass energies between 4.009 GeV and 4.6 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we measure fifteen exclusive cross sections and effective form factors for the process e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} by means of a single baryon-tag method. After performing a fit to the dressed cross section of e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+}, no significant ψ(4230)ψ(4230) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) resonance is observed in the Ξ−Ξˉ+Ξ^{-}\barΞ^{+} final states, and upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on ΓeeBΓ_{ee}\mathcal{B} for the processes ψ(4230)ψ(4230)/ψ(4260)→Ξ−Ξˉ+ψ(4260)\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} are determined. In addition, an excited ΞΞ baryon at 1820 MeV/c2c^{2} is observed with a statistical significance of 6.2 ∼\sim 6.5σσ by including the systematic uncertainty, and the mass and width are measured to be M=(1825.5±4.7±4.7)M = (1825.5 \pm 4.7 \pm 4.7)~MeV/c2c^{2} and Γ=(17.0±15.0±7.9)Γ= (17.0 \pm 15.0 \pm 7.9)~MeV, which confirms the existence of the JP=32−J^{P}=\frac{3}{2}^{-} state Ξ(1820)Ξ(1820).

Measurement of the Photon Beam Asymmetry in γ⃗p→K+Σ0\vecγ p\to K^+Σ^0 at Eγ=8.5E_γ = 8.5 GeV

We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry ΣΣ for the reaction γ⃗p→K+Σ0\vecγ p\to K^+Σ^0(1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2-8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry ΣΣ was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable tt, and a single value of ΣΣ was extracted for events produced in the uu-channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry ΣΣ for the reaction in this energy range. For the tt-channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the tt-range studied, −t=(0.1−1.4) -t=(0.1-1.4)~(GeV/cc)2^{2}, with an average value of Σ=1.00±0.05Σ= 1.00\pm 0.05. This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the K∗K^{*}(892) Regge trajectory. A value of Σ=0.41±0.09Σ= 0.41 \pm 0.09 is obtained for the uu-channel integrated up to −u=2.0-u=2.0~(GeV/cc)2^{2}.

Model-independent determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D0D^0 and Dˉ0→KS,L0π+π−\bar{D}^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- and its impact on the measurement of the CKM angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3

Crucial inputs for a variety of CPCP-violation studies can be determined through the analysis of pairs of quantum-entangled neutral DD mesons, which are produced in the decay of the ψ(3770)ψ(3770) resonance. The relative strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 in the decays D0→KS,L0π+π−D^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- are studied using 2.93~fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data delivered by the BEPCII collider and collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV. Results are presented in regions of the phase space of the decay. These are the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D \to K_{S,L}^0π^+π^- decays. Using these parameters, the associated uncertainty on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 is expected to be between 0.7∘0.7^\circ and 1.2∘1.2^\circ, for an analysis using the decay B±→DK±B^{\pm}\rightarrow DK^{\pm}, D→KS0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_Sπ^+π^-, where DD represents a superposition of D0D^0 and D0ˉ\bar{D^0} states. This is a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. Furthermore, these results provide valuable input for charm-mixing studies, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Observation of a cross-section enhancement near mass threshold in e+e−→ΛΛˉe^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ

The process e+e−→ΛΛˉe^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ is studied using data samples at s=2.2324\sqrt{s}=2.2324, 2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section is measured at s\sqrt{s}=2.2324 GeV, which is 1.0 MeV above the ΛΛˉΛ\barΛ mass threshold, to be 305±45−36+66305\pm45^{+66}_{-36} pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The substantial cross section near threshold is significantly larger than that expected from theory, which predicts the cross section to vanish at threshold. The Born cross sections at s\sqrt{s}=2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV are measured and found to be consistent with previous experimental results, but with improved precision. Finally, the corresponding effective electromagnetic form factors of ΛΛ are deduced.

Observation of a resonant structure in e+e−→ωηe^{+}e^{-} \to ωη and another in e+e−→ωπ0e^{+}e^{-} \to ωπ^{0} at center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV

Born cross sections for the processes e+e−→ωηe^+e^- \to ωη and e+e−→ωπ0e^+e^- \to ωπ^{0} have been determined for center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The results obtained in this work are consistent with previous measurements but with improved precision. Two resonant structures are observed. In the e+e−→ωηe^{+}e^{-} \to ωη cross sections, a resonance with a mass of (2179±21±3)MeV/c2(2179 \pm 21 \pm 3)\text{MeV}/c^2 and a width of (89±28±5)MeV(89 \pm 28 \pm 5)\text{MeV} is observed with a significance of 6.1σσ. Its properties are consistent with the ϕ(2170)ϕ(2170). In the e+e−→ωπ0e^{+}e^{-} \toωπ^{0} cross sections, a resonance denoted Y(2040)Y(2040) is observed with a significance of more than 10σσ. Its mass and width are determined to be (2034±13±9)MeV/c2(2034 \pm 13 \pm 9)\text{MeV}/c^2 and (234±30±25)MeV(234 \pm 30 \pm 25)\text{MeV}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic.

A resonance with quantum numbers JPC=1−−J^{PC}=1^{--} is observed with mass MM = (2177.5 ±\pm 4.8 (stat) ±\pm 19.5 (syst)) MeV/c2{ \it{c}^{\mathrm{2}}} and width ΓΓ = (149.0 ±\pm 15.6 (stat) ±\pm 8.9 (syst)) MeV with a statistical significance larger than 10σσ. Observation of the Y(4220)Y(4220) and Y(4360)Y(4360) in the process e+e−→ηJ/ψe^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ

The cross sections of the process e+e−→ηJ/ψe^{+}e^{-} \to ηJ/ψ at center-of-mass energies (s\sqrt{s}) between 3.81 and 4.60 GeV are measured with high precision by using data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Three structures are observed by analyzing the lineshape of the measured cross sections, and a maximum-likelihood fit including three resonances is performed by assuming the lowest lying structure is the ψ(4040)ψ(4040). For the other resonances, we obtain masses of (4218.7±4.0±2.5)(4218.7 \pm 4.0 \pm 2.5) and (4380.4±14.2±1.8)(4380.4 \pm 14.2 \pm 1.8) MeV/c2^{2} with corresponding widths of (82.5±5.9±0.5)(82.5 \pm 5.9 \pm 0.5) and (147.0±63.0±25.8)(147.0 \pm 63.0 \pm 25.8) MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The measured resonant parameters are consistent with those of the Y(4220)Y(4220) and Y(4360)Y(4360) from pr evious measurements of different final states. Study of BESIII Trigger Efficiencies with the 2018 J/ψJ/ψ Data

Using a dedicated data sample taken in 2018 on the J/ψJ/ψ peak, we perform a detailed study of the trigger efficiencies of the BESIII detector. The efficiencies are determined from three representative physics processes, namely Bhabha-scattering, dimuon production and generic hadronic events with charged particles. The combined efficiency of all active triggers approaches 100%100\% in most cases with uncertainties small enough as not to affect most physics analyses.

The GlueX Beamline and Detector

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 μμs. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. We describe the photon beam, the GlueX detector components, electronics, data-acquisition and monitoring systems, and the performance of the experiment during the first three years of operation.

Technical Design Report for the PANDA Endcap Disc DIRC

PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5° to 22° and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. The final design meets all PANDA requirements and guarantees suffcient safety margins.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion (πNπN) TDAs from pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair q2q^2, the amplitude of the signal channel pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 admits a QCD factorized description in terms of πNπN TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring pˉp→e+e−π0\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0 with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. pˉp→π+π−π0\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0 were performed for the center of mass energy squared s=5s = 5 GeV2^2 and s=10s = 10 GeV2^2, in the kinematic regions 3.0<q2<4.33.0 < q^2 < 4.3 GeV2^2 and 5<q2<95 < q^2 < 9 GeV2^2, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone ∣cos⁡θπ0∣>0.5| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of 5⋅1075\cdot 10^7 (1⋅1071\cdot 10^7) at low (high) q2q^2 for s=5s=5 GeV2^2, and of 1⋅1081\cdot 10^8 (6⋅1066\cdot 10^6) at low (high) q2q^2 for s=10s=10 GeV2^2, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around 40%40\%. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to 22 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel pˉp→e+e−\bar p p \to e^+ e^- is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, i.e.\textit{i.e.} pˉp→π+π−\bar p p \to π^+ π^-, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Measurement of azimuthal asymmetries in inclusive charged dipion production in e+e−e^+e^- annihilations at s\sqrt{s} = 3.65 GeV

We present a measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries of two charged pions in the inclusive process e+e−→ππXe^+e^-\rightarrow ππX based on a data set of 62 pb−1\rm{pb}^{-1} at the center-of-mass energy s=3.65\sqrt{s}=3.65 GeV collected with the BESIII detector. These asymmetries can be attributed to the Collins fragmentation function. We observe a nonzero asymmetry, which increases with increasing pion momentum. As our energy scale is close to that of the existing semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experimental data, the measured asymmetries are important inputs for the global analysis of extracting the quark transversity distribution inside the nucleon and are valuable to explore the energy evolution of the spin-dependent fragmentation function.

Within the final states investigated in our analysis, we observe the new a1(1420)a_1(1420) decaying only into f0(980) πf_0(980)\,π, suggesting its exotic nature.

Observation of an anomalous line shape of the η′π+π−η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-} mass spectrum near the ppˉp\bar{p} mass threshold in J/ψ→γη′π+π−J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}

Using 1.09×1091.09\times10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ events collected by the BESIII experiment in 2012, we study the J/ψ→γη′π+π−J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-} process and observe a significant abrupt change in the slope of the η′π+π−η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-} invariant mass distribution at the proton-antiproton (ppˉp\bar{p}) mass threshold. We use two models to characterize the η′π+π−η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-} line shape around 1.85 GeV/c21.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}: one which explicitly incorporates the opening of a decay threshold in the mass spectrum (Flatté formula), and another which is the coherent sum of two resonant amplitudes. Both fits show almost equally good agreement with data, and suggest the existence of either a broad state around 1.85 GeV/c21.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2} with strong couplings to ppˉp\bar{p} final states or a narrow state just below the ppˉp\bar{p} mass threshold. Although we cannot distinguish between the fits, either one supports the existence of a ppˉp\bar{p} molecule-like state or bound state with greater than 7σ7σ significance.

Observation of pseudoscalar and tensor resonances in J/ψ→γϕϕJ/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ

Based on a sample of (1310.6±10.5)×106(1310.6 \pm 10.5) \times 10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, a partial wave analysis of the decay J/ψ→γϕϕJ/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ is performed in order to study the intermediate states. Results of the partial wave analysis show that the structures are predominantly 0−+0^{-+} states. The existence of the η(2225)η(2225) is confirmed, and its resonance parameters are measured. Two additional pseudoscalar states, the η(2100)η(2100) with a mass of 2050−24+30−26+752050_{-24}^{+30}{}_{-26}^{+75}~MeV/c2c^{2} and a width of 250−30+36−164+181250_{-30}^{+36}{}_{-164}^{+181}~MeV/c2c^{2} and the X(2500)X(2500) with a mass of 2470−19+15−23+1012470_{-19}^{+15}{}_{-23}^{+101}~MeV/c2c^{2} and a width of 230−35+64−33+56230_{-35}^{+64}{}_{-33}^{+56}~MeV/c2c^{2}, are observed. In addition to these three pseudoscalar states, the scalar state f0(2100)f_0(2100), and three tensor states, the f2(2010)f_2(2010), f2(2300)f_2(2300) and f2(2340)f_2(2340), are observed in the process J/ψ→γϕϕJ/ψ\rightarrow γϕϕ. The product branching fractions B{\cal B}(J/ψ→γX)×B(X→ϕϕ)J/ψ\rightarrow γX)\times{\cal B}(X\rightarrow ϕϕ) are reported.

Search for the weak decay η′→K±π∓η^{\prime}\to K^{\pm}π^{\mp} and precise measurement of the branching fraction B(J/ψ→ϕη′){\cal B}(J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime})

We present the first search for the rare decay of η′η^\prime into K±π∓K^{\pm}π^{\mp} in J/ψ→ϕη′J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime}, using a sample of 1.3×1091.3\times10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit at the 90\% confidence level for the ratio B(η′→K±π∓)B(η′→γπ+π−)\frac{{\cal B}(η^{\prime}\to K^{\pm}π^{\mp})}{{\cal B}(η^{\prime}\toγπ^{+}π^{-})} is determined to be 1.3×10−41.3\times10^{-4}. In addition, we report the measurement of the branching fraction of J/ψ→ϕη′J/ψ\toϕη^{\prime} to be (5.10±0.03(stat.)±0.32(syst.))×10−4(5.10\pm0.03(\text{stat.})\pm0.32(\text{syst.}))\times10^{-4}, which agrees with previous results from BESII.

Study of D+→K−π+e+νeD^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e

We present an analysis of the decay D+→K−π+e+νeD^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e based on data collected by the BESIII experiment at the ψ(3770)ψ(3770) resonance. Using a nearly background-free sample of 18262 events, we measure the branching fraction B(D+→K−π+e+νe)=(3.71±0.03±0.08)%\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e) = (3.71 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.08)\%. For 0.8<mKπ<1.00.8<m_{Kπ}<1.0 GeV/c2c^{2} the partial branching fraction is B(D+→K−π+e+νe)[0.8,1]=(3.33±0.03±0.07)%\mathcal{B}(D^{+} \to K^{-} π^+ e^+ ν_e)_{[0.8,1]} = (3.33 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.07)\%. A partial wave analysis shows that the dominant Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} component is accompanied by an \emph{S}-wave contribution accounting for (6.05±0.22±0.18)%(6.05\pm0.22\pm0.18)\% of the total rate and that other components are negligible. The parameters of the Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} resonance and of the form factors based on the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions are also measured. We also present a measurement of the Kˉ∗(892)0\bar K^{*}(892)^{0} helicity basis form factors in a model-independent way.

Using a data sample of 1.31×1091.31 \times 10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ events accumulated with the BESIII detector, the decay J/ψ→ppˉϕJ/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ is studied via two decay modes, ϕ→KS0KL0ϕ\to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{L} and ϕ→K+K−ϕ\to K^{+}K^{-}. The branching fraction of J/ψ→ppˉϕJ/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p\bar{p}ϕ)=[5.23\pm0.06(\mbox{stat})\pm0.33(\mbox{syst})]\times10^{-5}$, which agrees well with a previously published measurement, but with a significantly improved precision. No evident enhancement near the ppˉp\bar{p} mass threshold, denoted as X(ppˉ)X(p\bar{p}), is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction of J/ψ→X(ppˉ)ϕ→ppˉϕJ/ψ\to X(p\bar{p})ϕ\to p\bar{p}ϕ is determined to be B(J/ψ→X(ppˉ)ϕ→ppˉϕ)<2.1×10−7\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to X(p\bar{p})ϕ\to p\bar{p}ϕ)<2.1\times10^{-7} at the 90\% confidence level.

An amplitude analysis of the π0π0π^{0}π^{0} system produced in radiative J/ψJ/ψ decays

An amplitude analysis of the π0π0π^{0}π^{0} system produced in radiative J/ψJ/ψ decays is presented. In particular, a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the π0π0π^{0}π^{0} system is determined as a function of Mπ0π0M_{π^{0}π^{0}} from an analysis of the (1.311±0.011)×109(1.311\pm0.011)\times10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ decays collected by the BESIII detector. The goal of this analysis is to provide a description of the scalar and tensor components of the π0π0π^0π^0 system while making minimal assumptions about the properties or number of poles in the amplitude. Such a model-independent description allows one to integrate these results with other related results from complementary reactions in the development of phenomenological models, which can then be used to directly fit experimental data to obtain parameters of interest. The branching fraction of J/ψ→γπ0π0J/ψ\to γπ^{0}π^{0} is determined to be (1.15±0.05)×10−3(1.15\pm0.05)\times10^{-3}, where the uncertainty is systematic only and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

Analysis Tools for Next-Generation Hadron Spectroscopy Experiments

The series of workshops on New Partial-Wave Analysis Tools for Next-Generation Hadron Spectroscopy Experiments was initiated with the ATHOS 2012 meeting, which took place in Camogli, Italy, June 20-22, 2012. It was followed by ATHOS 2013 in Kloster Seeon near Munich, Germany, May 21-24, 2013. The third, ATHOS3, meeting is planned for April 13-17, 2015 at The George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus, USA. The workshops focus on the development of amplitude analysis tools for meson and baryon spectroscopy, and complement other programs in hadron spectroscopy organized in the recent past including the INT-JLab Workshop on Hadron Spectroscopy in Seattle in 2009, the International Workshop on Amplitude Analysis in Hadron Spectroscopy at the ECT*-Trento in 2011, the School on Amplitude Analysis in Modern Physics in Bad Honnef in 2011, the Jefferson Lab Advanced Study Institute Summer School in 2012, and the School on Concepts of Modern Amplitude Analysis Techniques in Flecken-Zechlin near Berlin in September 2013. The aim of this document is to summarize the discussions that took place at the ATHOS 2012 and ATHOS 2013 meetings. We do not attempt a comprehensive review of the field of amplitude analysis, but offer a collection of thoughts that we hope may lay the ground for such a document.

Confirmation of a charged charmoniumlike state Zc(3885)∓Z_c(3885)^{\mp} in e+e−→π±(DDˉ∗)∓e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}(D\bar{D}^*)^\mp with double DD tag

We present a study of the process e+e−→π±(DDˉ∗)∓e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp} using data samples of 1092~pb−1^{-1} at s=4.23\sqrt{s}=4.23~GeV and 826~pb−1^{-1} at s=4.26\sqrt{s}=4.26~GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. With full reconstruction of the DD meson pair and the bachelor π±π^{\pm} in the final state, we confirm the existence of the charged structure Zc(3885)∓Z_c(3885)^{\mp} in the (DDˉ∗)∓(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp} system in the two isospin processes e+e−→π+D0D∗−e^+e^-\toπ^+D^0D^{*-} and e+e−→π+D−D∗0e^+e^-\toπ^+D^-D^{*0}. By performing a simultaneous fit, the statistical significance of Zc(3885)∓Zc(3885)^{\mp} signal is determined to be greater than 10σσ, and its pole mass and width are measured to be MpoleM_{\rm{pole}}=(3881.7±\pm1.6(stat.)±\pm1.6(syst.))~MeV/c2c^2 and ΓpoleΓ_{\rm{pole}}=(26.6±\pm2.0(stat.)±\pm2.1(syst.))~MeV, respectively. The Born cross section times the (DDˉ∗)∓(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp} branching fraction (σ(e+e−→π±Zc(3885)∓)×Br(Zc(3885)∓→(DDˉ∗)∓)σ(e^+e^-\toπ^{\pm}Z_{c}(3885)^{\mp}) \times Br(Z_{c}(3885)^{\mp}\to(D\bar{D}^*)^{\mp})) is measured to be (141.6±7.9(stat.)±12.3(syst.)) pb(141.6\pm7.9(\text{stat.})\pm12.3(\text{syst.}))~\text{pb} at s=4.23\sqrt{s}=4.23~GeV and (108.4±6.9(stat.)±8.8(syst.)) pb(108.4\pm6.9(\text{stat.})\pm8.8(\text{syst.}))~\text{pb} at s=4.26\sqrt{s}=4.26~GeV. The polar angular distribution of the π±π^{\pm}-Zc(3885)∓Z_c(3885)^{\mp} system is consistent with the expectation of a quantum number assignment of JP=1+J^P=1^+ for Zc(3885)∓Z_c(3885)^{\mp}.

Interplay among transversity induced asymmetries in hadron leptoproduction

In the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark several left-right asymmetries are possible for the hadrons in the jet. When only one unpolarized hadron is selected, it exhibits an azimuthal modulation known as Collins effect. When a pair of oppositely charged hadrons is observed, three asymmetries can be considered, a di-hadron asymmetry and two single hadron asymmetries. In lepton deep inelastic scattering on transversely polarized nucleons all these asymmetries are coupled with the transversity distribution. From the high statistics COMPASS data on oppositely charged hadron-pair production we have investigated for the first time the dependence of these three asymmetries on the difference of the azimuthal angles of the two hadrons. The similarity of transversity induced single and di-hadron asymmetries is discussed. A new analysis of the data allows to establish quantitative relationships among them, providing for the first time strong experimental indication that the underlying fragmentation mechanisms are all driven by a common physical process.

Longitudinal double spin asymmetries in single hadron quasi-real photoproduction at high pTp_T

We measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries ALLA_{LL} for single hadron muo-production off protons and deuterons at photon virtuality Q2Q^2 < 1(GeV/c\it c)2^2 for transverse hadron momenta pTp_T in the range 0.7 GeV/c\it c to 4 GeV/c\it c . They were determined using COMPASS data taken with a polarised muon beam of 160 GeV/c\it c or 200 GeV/c\it c impinging on polarised 6LiD\mathrm{{}^6LiD} or NH3\mathrm{NH_3} targets. The experimental asymmetries are compared to next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, and are sensitive to the gluon polarisation ΔGΔG inside the nucleon in the range of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons 0.05<xg<0.20.05 < x_g < 0.2.

Measurement of the charged-pion polarisability

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, π−γ→π−γπ^-γ\rightarrow π^-γ, at centre-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction π−Ni→π−γ  Niπ^-\mathrm{Ni}\rightarrowπ^-γ\;\mathrm{Ni}, which is initiated by 190\,GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, Q2<0.0015Q^2<0.0015\,(GeV/cc)2^2. From a sample of 63\,000 events the pion electric polarisability is determined to be $α_π =\ (\,2.0\ \pm\ 0.6_{\mbox{\scriptsize stat}}\ \pm\ 0.7_{\mbox{\scriptsize syst}}\,) \times 10^{-4}\,\mbox{fm}^3$ under the assumption απ=−βπα_π=-β_π, which relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarisabilities. It is the most precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong interaction, that has been addressed since long by various methods with conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for which the cross-section behavior is unambigiously known, was performed for an independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Based on a sample of 1.31×1091.31 \times 10^9 J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, Dalitz plot analyses of selected 79,625 η→π+π−π0η\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-}π^0 events, 33,908 η→π0π0π0η\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0 events and 1,888 η′→π0π0π0η^{\prime}\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0 events are performed. The measured matrix elements of η→π+π−π0η\rightarrowπ^+π^-π^0 are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements. The Dalitz plot slope parameters of η→π0π0π0η\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0 and η′→π0π0π0η^{\prime}\rightarrowπ^0π^0π^0 are determined to be −0.055±0.014±0.004-0.055 \pm 0.014 \pm 0.004 and −0.640±0.046±0.047-0.640 \pm 0.046 \pm 0.047, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Both values are consistent with previous measurements, while the precision of the latter one is improved by a factor of three. Final state interactions are found to have an important role in those decays.

Measurement of the proton form factor by studying e+e−→ppˉe^{+} e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p}

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the Born cross section of e+e−→ppˉe^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p} at 12 center-of-mass energies from 2232.4 to 3671.0 MeV. The corresponding effective electromagnetic form factor of the proton is deduced under the assumption that the electric and magnetic form factors are equal (∣GE∣=∣GM∣)(|G_{E}|= |G_{M}|). In addition, the ratio of electric to magnetic form factors, ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}|, and ∣GM∣|G_{M}| are extracted by fitting the polar angle distribution of the proton for the data samples with larger statistics, namely at s=\sqrt{s}= 2232.4 and 2400.0 MeV and a combined sample at s\sqrt{s} = 3050.0, 3060.0 and 3080.0 MeV, respectively. The measured cross sections are in agreement with recent results from BaBar, improving the overall uncertainty by about 30\%. The ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}| ratios are close to unity and consistent with BaBar results in the same q2q^{2} region, which indicates the data are consistent with the assumption that ∣GE∣=∣GM∣|G_{E}|=|G_{M}| within uncertainties.

We report an observation of the process J/ψ→γX(1835)→γKS0KS0ηJ/ψ\rightarrowγX(1835)\rightarrowγK^0_S K^0_Sη at low KS0KS0K^0_S K^0_S mass with a statistical significance larger than 12.9σσ using a data sample of 1.31×1091.31 \times 10^{9} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector. In this region of phase space the KS0KS0K^0_S K^0_S system is dominantly produced through the f0(980)f_0(980). We report a study of the process e+e−→(D∗Dˉ∗)0π0e^{+} e^{-} \to (D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{0} π^0 using e+e−e^+e^- collision data samples with integrated luminosities of 1092pb−11092 \rm{pb}^{-1} at s=4.23GeV\sqrt{s}=4.23 \rm{GeV} and 826pb−1826 \rm{pb}^{-1} at s=4.26GeV\sqrt{s}=4.26 \rm{GeV} collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We observe a new neutral structure near the (D∗Dˉ∗)0(D^{*} \bar{D}^{*})^{0} mass threshold in the π0π^0 recoil mass spectrum, which we denote as Zc(4025)0Z_{c}(4025)^{0}. A neutral structure in the DDˉ∗D\bar{D}^{*} system around the DDˉ∗D\bar{D}^{*} mass threshold is observed with a statistical significance greater than 10σσ in the processes e+e−→D+D∗−π0+c.c.e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow D^{+}D^{*-}π^{0}+c.c. and e+e−→D0Dˉ∗0π0+c.c.e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow D^{0}\bar{D}^{*0}π^{0}+c.c. at s\sqrt{s} = 4.226 and 4.257 GeV in the BESIII experiment. The structure is denoted as Zc(3885)0Z_{c}(3885)^{0}. Assuming the presence of a resonance, its pole mass and width are determined to be (3885.7−5.7+4.33885.7^{+4.3}_{-5.7}(stat)±8.4\pm 8.4(syst)) MeV/c2c^{2} and (35−12+1135^{+11}_{-12}(stat)±15 \pm 15(syst)) MeV, respectively. The Born cross sections are measured to be σ(e+e−→Zc(3885)0π0,Zc(3885)0→DDˉ∗)=(77±13σ(e^{+}e^{-}\to Z_{c}(3885)^{0}π^{0}, Z_{c}(3885)^{0} \to D\bar{D}^{*})=(77 \pm 13(stat)±17\pm 17(syst)) pb at 4.226 GeV and (47±947 \pm 9(stat)±10 \pm 10(syst)) pb at 4.257 GeV. The ratio of decay rates B(Zc(3885)0→D+D∗−+c.c.)B(Zc(3885)0→D0Dˉ∗0+c.c.)\frac{\mathcal{B}({Z_{c}(3885)^{0} \to D^{+}D^{*-}+c.c.})}{\mathcal{B}({Z_{c}(3885)^{0} \to D^{0}\bar{D}^{*0}+c.c.})} is determined to be 0.96±0.180.96 \pm 0.18(stat)±0.12\pm 0.12(syst), consistent with no isospin violation in the process Zc(3885)0→DDˉ∗Z_{c}(3885)^{0}\to D\bar{D}^*.

Observation of the ψ(13D2)ψ(1^3D_2) state in e+e−→π+π−γχc1e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-γχ_{c1} at BESIII

We report the observation of the X(3823)X(3823) in the process e+e−→π+π−X(3823)→π+π−γχc1e^+e^-\to π^+π^-X(3823) \to π^+π^-γχ_{c1} with a statistical significance of 6.2σ6.2σ, in data samples at center-of-mass energies s=\sqrt{s}=4.230, 4.260, 4.360, 4.420 and 4.600~GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII electron positron collider. The measured mass of the X(3823)X(3823) is (3821.7±1.3±0.7)(3821.7\pm 1.3\pm 0.7)~MeV/c2c^2, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic, and the width is less than 1616~MeV at the 90\% confidence level. The products of the Born cross sections for e+e−→π+π−X(3823)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-X(3823) and the branching ratio B[X(3823)→γχc1,c2]\mathcal{B}[X(3823)\to γχ_{c1,c2}] are also measured. Observation of the Dalitz Decay η′→γe+e−η' \to γe^+e^-

We report the first observation of the Dalitz decay η′→γe+e−η' \to γe^+e^-, based on a data sample of 1.31 billion J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector. The η′η' mesons are produced via the J/ψ→γη′J/ψ\to γη' decay process. The ratio Γ(η′→γe+e−)/Γ(η′→γγ)Γ(η' \to γe^+ e^-)/Γ(η'\toγγ) is measured to be (2.13±0.09(stat.)±0.07(sys.))×10−2(2.13\pm0.09(\text{stat.})\pm0.07(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-2}. This corresponds to a branching fraction B(η′→γe+e−)=(4.69±0.20(stat.)±0.23(sys.))×10−4{\cal B}(η' \to γe^+e^-)= (4.69 \pm0.20(\text{stat.})\pm0.23(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-4}. The transition form factor is extracted and different expressions are compared to the measured dependence on the e+e−e^+e^- invariant mass. The results are consistent with the prediction of the Vector Meson Dominance model.

Observation of the electromagnetic doubly OZI-suppressed decay J/ψ→ϕπ0J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}

Using a sample of 1.311.31 billion J/ψJ/ψ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the observation of the decay J/ψ→ϕπ0J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0}, which is the first evidence for a doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppressed electromagnetic J/ψJ/ψ decay. A clear structure is observed in the K+K−K^{+} K^{-} mass spectrum around 1.02 GeV/c2c^2, which can be attributed to interference between J/ψ→ϕπ0J/ψ\rightarrow ϕπ^{0} and J/ψ→K+K−π0J/ψ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{0} decays. Due to this interference, two possible solutions are found. The corresponding measured values of the branching fraction of J/ψ→ϕπ0J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0} are [2.94±0.16(stat.)±0.16(syst.)]×10−6[2.94 \pm 0.16\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.16\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-6} and [1.24±0.33(stat.)±0.30(syst.)]×10−7[1.24 \pm 0.33\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.30\text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-7}.

Observation of the isospin-violating decay J/ψ→ϕπ0f0(980)J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0}f_{0}(980)

Using a sample of 1.31 billion J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the decays J/ψ→ϕπ+π−π0J/ψ\to ϕπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0} and J/ψ→ϕπ0π0π0J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0}π^{0}π^{0} are investigated. The isospin violating decay J/ψ→ϕπ0f0(980)J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0} f_{0}(980) with f0(980)→ππf_{0}(980) \to ππ, is observed for the first time. The width of the f0(980)f_{0}(980) obtained from the dipion mass spectrum is found to be much smaller than the world average value. In the π0f0(980)π^{0} f_{0}(980) mass spectrum, there is evidence of f1(1285)f_1(1285) production. By studying the decay J/ψ→ϕη′J/ψ\to ϕη', the branching fractions of η′→π+π−π0η' \to π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} and η′→π0π0π0η' \to π^{0}π^{0}π^{0}, as well as their ratio, are also measured.

We also present measurements of the absolute branching fractions for the related ηπηπ decay modes. We find B(D+→ηπ+)=(3.07±0.22±0.13)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D^{+}\toηπ^{+})=(3.07\pm0.22\pm0.13)\times10^{-3} and B(D0→ηπ0)=(0.65±0.09±0.04)×10−3\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\toηπ^{0})=(0.65\pm0.09\pm0.04)\times10^{-3}, which are consistent with the current world averages. Precision measurement of the D∗0D^{*0} decay branching fractions

Using 482 pb−1^{-1} of data taken at s=4.009\sqrt{s}=4.009 GeV, we measure the branching fractions of the decays of D∗0D^{*0} into D0π0D^0π^0 and D0γD^0γ to be $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0π^0)=(65.5\pm 0.8\pm 0.5)%$ and $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0γ)=(34.5\pm 0.8\pm 0.5)%$ respectively, by assuming that the D∗0D^{*0} decays only into these two modes. The ratio of the two branching fractions is $\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0π^0)/\BR(D^{*0} \to D^0γ) =1.90\pm 0.07\pm 0.05$, which is independent of the assumption made above. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The precision is improved by a factor of three compared to the present world average values.

By examining the ωχc0ωχ_{c0} cross section as a function of center-of-mass energy, we find that it is inconsistent with the line shape of the Y(4260)Y(4260) observed in e+e−→π+π−J/ψe^+ e^-\toπ^+π^-J/ψ. Assuming the ωχc0ωχ_{c0} signals come from a single resonance, we extract mass and width of the resonance to be (4230±8±6)(4230\pm8\pm6) MeV/c2c^2 and (38±12±2)(38\pm12\pm2) MeV, respectively, and the statistical significance is more than 9σ9σ.

Study of χcJχ_{cJ} decaying into ϕϕ K∗(892)K^*(892) Kˉ\bar{K}

Using a data sample of 106 million ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring, we study for the first time the decay χcJ→ϕKS0K±π∓χ_{cJ}\toϕK^{0}_S K^{\pm}π^{\mp} and χcJ→ϕK+K−π0χ_{cJ}\toϕK^{+} K^{-}π^{0} in the E1 radiative transition ψ(3686)→γχcJψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}. The decays are dominated by the three-body decay χcJ→ϕK∗(892)Kˉχ_{cJ}\to ϕK^*(892)\bar{K}. We measure branching fractions for this reaction via the neutral and charged K∗(892)K^*(892) and find them consistent with each other within the expectation of isospin symmetry. In the KKˉπK\bar{K}π invariant mass distribution a structure near the K∗(892)KˉK^*(892)\bar{K} mass threshold is observed, and the corresponding mass and width are measured to be 1412±4(stat.)±8(sys.)MeV/c21412\pm4(\mathrm{stat.})\pm8(\mathrm{sys.}) \mathrm{MeV}/c^2 and ΓΓ = 84±12(stat.)±40(sys.)MeV84\pm12(\mathrm{stat.})\pm40(\mathrm{sys.}) \mathrm{MeV}, respectively. The observed state favors an assignment to the h1(1380)h_1(1380), considering its possible JPCJ^{PC} and comparing its mass, width and decay mode to those reported in the Particle Data Group.

From the D+→KL0e+νeD^+ \to K^0_L e^+ ν_e differential decay rate distribution, the product of the hadronic form factor and the magnitude of the CKM matrix element, f+K(0)∣Vcs∣f_{+}^{K}(0)|V_{cs}|, is determined to be 0.728±0.006(stat.)±0.011(sys.)0.728 \pm 0.006(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.011(\mathrm{sys.}). In an analysis of a 2.92~fb−1^{-1} data sample taken at 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we measure the absolute decay branching fractions to be B(D0→K−e+νe)=(3.505±0.014±0.033)%\mathcal B(D^0 \to K^-e^+ν_e)=(3.505\pm 0.014 \pm 0.033)\% and B(D0→π−e+νe)=(0.295±0.004±0.003)%\mathcal B(D^0 \to π^-e^+ν_e)=(0.295\pm 0.004\pm 0.003)\%. From a study of the differential decay rates we obtain the products of hadronic form factor and the magnitude of the CKM matrix element f+K(0)∣Vcs∣=0.7172±0.0025±0.0035f_{+}^K(0)|V_{cs}|=0.7172\pm0.0025\pm 0.0035 and f+π(0)∣Vcd∣=0.1435±0.0018±0.0009f_{+}^π(0)|V_{cd}|=0.1435\pm0.0018\pm 0.0009. Combining these products with the values of ∣Vcs(d)∣|V_{cs(d)}| from the SM constraint fit, we extract the hadronic form factors f+K(0)=0.7368±0.0026±0.0036f^K_+(0) = 0.7368\pm0.0026\pm 0.0036 and f+π(0)=0.6372±0.0080±0.0044f^π_+(0) = 0.6372\pm0.0080\pm 0.0044, and their ratio f+π(0)/f+K(0)=0.8649±0.0112±0.0073f_+^π(0)/f_+^{K}(0)=0.8649\pm 0.0112\pm 0.0073. These form factors and their ratio are used to test unquenched Lattice QCD calculations of the form factors and a light cone sum rule (LCSR) calculation of their ratio. The measured value of f+K(π)(0)∣Vcs(d)∣f_+^{K(π)}(0) |V_{cs(d)}| and the lattice QCD value for f+K(π)(0)f^{K(π)}_+(0) are used to extract values of the CKM matrix elements of ∣Vcs∣=0.9601±0.0033±0.0047±0.0239|V_{cs}|=0.9601 \pm 0.0033 \pm 0.0047 \pm 0.0239 and ∣Vcd∣=0.2155±0.0027±0.0014±0.0094|V_{cd}|=0.2155 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0014 \pm 0.0094, where the third errors are due to the uncertainties in lattice QCD calculations of the form factors. Using the LCSR value for f+π(0)/f+K(0)f_+^π(0)/f_+^K(0), we determine the ratio ∣Vcd∣/∣Vcs∣=0.238±0.004±0.002±0.011|V_{cd}|/|V_{cs}|=0.238\pm 0.004\pm 0.002\pm 0.011, where the third error is from the uncertainty in the LCSR normalization. In addition, we measure form factor parameters for three different theoretical models that describe the weak hadronic charged currents for these two semileptonic decays. All of these measurements are the most precise to date.

The Spin Structure Function g1pg_1^{\rm p} of the Proton and a Test of the Bjorken Sum Rule

New results for the double spin asymmetry A1pA_1^{\rm p} and the proton longitudinal spin structure function g1pg_1^{\rm p} are presented. They were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using polarised 200 GeV muons scattered off a longitudinally polarised NH3_3 target. The data were collected in 2011 and complement those recorded in 2007 at 160\,GeV, in particular at lower values of xx. They improve the statistical precision of g1p(x)g_1^{\rm p}(x) by about a factor of two in the region x≲0.02x\lesssim 0.02. A next-to-leading order QCD fit to the g1g_1 world data is performed. It leads to a new determination of the quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin, ΔΣΔΣ ranging from 0.26 to 0.36, and to a re-evaluation of the first moment of g1pg_1^{\rm p}. The uncertainty of ΔΣΔΣ is mostly due to the large uncertainty in the present determinations of the gluon helicity distribution. A new evaluation of the Bjorken sum rule based on the COMPASS results for the non-singlet structure function g1NS(x,Q2)g_1^{\rm NS}(x,Q^2) yields as ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants ∣gA/gV∣=1.22±0.05 (stat.)±0.10 (syst.)|g_{\rm A}/g_{\rm V}| = 1.22 \pm 0.05~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.10~({\rm syst.}), which validates the sum rule to an accuracy of about 9\%.

A high-statistics measurement of transverse spin effects in dihadron production from muon-proton semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering

A measurement of the azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised proton (NH3_{3}) targets are presented. They provide independent access to the transversity distribution functions through the measurement of the Collins asymmetry in single hadron production. The data were taken in the year 20102010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a $160\,\mbox{GeV}/c$ muon beam of the CERN SPS, increasing by a factor of about three the available statistics of the previously published data taken in the year 20072007. The measured sizeable asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data. An approximate equality of the Collins asymmetry and the dihadron asymmetry is observed, suggesting a common physical mechanism in the underlying fragmentation.

Collins and Sivers asymmetries in muonproduction of pions and kaons off transversely polarised proton

Measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of high energy muons off transversely polarised protons are presented. The results were obtained using all the available COMPASS proton data, which were taken in the years 2007 and 2010. The Collins asymmetries exhibit in the valence region a non-zero signal for pions and there are hints of non-zero signal also for kaons. The Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive for positive pions and kaons and compatible with zero otherwise.

Measurement of azimuthal hadron asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off unpolarised nucleons

Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS muon beam at 160160 GeV/c and a 6^6LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations cos⁡ϕh\cosϕ_h, cos⁡2ϕh\cos2ϕ_h and sin⁡ϕh\sinϕ_h were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables xx, zz or pT hp_T^{\,h} and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the cos⁡ϕh\cos ϕ_h and cos⁡2ϕh\cos 2ϕ_h modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons.

Measurement of radiative widths of a2(1320)a_2(1320) and π2(1670)π_2(1670)

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the reaction π−γ→π−π−π+π^- γ\rightarrow π^-π^-π^+ embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV190~\textrm{GeV} pions scattering in the Coulomb field of a lead target, π−Pb→π−π−π+Pbπ^- \text{Pb} \rightarrow π^-π^-π^+ \text{Pb}. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at momentum transfer below 0.001 (GeV/c)20.001~(\text{GeV}/c)^2. Using a partial-wave analysis the amplitudes and relative phases of the a2(1320)a_2(1320) and π2(1670)π_2(1670) mesons have been extracted, and the Coulomb and the diffractive contributions have been disentangled. Measuring absolute production cross sections we have determined the radiative width of the a2(1320)a_2(1320) to be Γ0(a2(1320)→πγ)=(358±6stat±42syst) keVΓ_0(a_2(1320) \rightarrow πγ) = (358 \pm 6_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 42_{\textrm{syst}})~\textrm{keV}. As the first measurement, Γ0(π2(1670)→πγ)=(181±11stat±27syst) keV⋅(BRf2πPDG/BRf2π)Γ_0(π_2(1670) \rightarrow πγ) = (181 \pm 11_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 27_{\textrm{syst}})~\textrm{keV} \cdot (\textrm{BR}^{\textrm{PDG}}_{f_2 π}/\textrm{BR}_{f_2 π}) is obtained for the radiative width of the π2(1670)π_2(1670), where in this analysis the branching ratio BRf2πPDG=0.56\textrm{BR}^{\textrm{PDG}}_{f_2 π}=0.56 has been used. We compare these values to previous measurements and theoretical predictions.

Measurement of the D→K−π+D\to K^-π^+ strong phase difference in ψ(3770)→D0D‾0ψ(3770)\to D^0\overline{D}{}^0

AKπCP\mathcal{A}^{CP}_{Kπ} can be used to extract the strong phase difference δKπδ_{Kπ} between the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed process D‾0→K−π+\overline{D}{}^{0}\to K^-π^+ and the Cabibbo-favored process D0→K−π+D^0\to K^- π^+. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third uncertainty arises from the external parameters. Measurement of the branching fraction for ψ(3686)→ωK+K−ψ(3686)\toωK^+ K^-

With 1.06×1081.06\times 10^8 ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of ψ(3686)→ωK+K−ψ(3686) \to ωK^+ K^- is measured to be (1.54±0.04±0.11)×10−4(1.54 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-4}. This is the most precise result to date, due to the largest ψ(3686)ψ(3686) sample, improved signal reconstruction efficiency, good simulation of the detector performance, and a more accurate knowledge of the continuum contribution. Using the branching fraction of J/ψ→ωK+K−J/ψ\to ωK^+ K^-, the ratio B(ψ(3868)→K+K−)/B(J/ψ→K+K−)\mathcal{B}(ψ(3868) \to K^+K^-) / \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to K^+K^-) is determined to be (18.4±3.7) %(18.4 \pm 3.7)\,\%. This constitutes a significantly improved test of the 12 %12\,\% rule, with the uncertainty now dominated by the J/ψJ/ψ branching fraction.

Exclusive production of ηπ−ηπ^- and η′π−η'π^- has been studied with a 191 GeV/c191\,\textrm{GeV}/c π−π^- beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (LL) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c23\,\textrm{GeV}/c^2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L=2,4,6L=2,4,6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320)a_2(1320) and a4(2040)a_4(2040) are in line with this similarity. The L=1L=1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c21.7\,\textrm{GeV}/c^2 in η′π−η'π^- and at 1.4 GeV/c21.4\,\textrm{GeV}/c^2 in ηπ−ηπ^-, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L=2L=2 are different.

Spin alignment and violation of the OZI rule in exclusive ωω and ϕϕ production in pp collisions

Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons ωω and ϕϕ is measured with a 190 GeV/c/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable xFx_{F} of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on xFx_{F} and on the invariant mass MpVM_{p\mathrm{V}} of the system formed by fast proton pfastp_\mathrm{fast} and vector meson VV is discussed in terms of diffractive production of pfastVp_\mathrm{fast}V resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element ρ00ρ_{00} of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on xFx_{F} and on MpVM_{p\mathrm{V}} are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to ωω production which are absent in the case of the ϕϕ meson. Removing the low-mass MpVM_{p\mathrm{V}} resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of xFx_\mathrm{F}.

Using the obtained cross section of ψ(3770)→ppˉψ(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}, the cross section of ppˉ→ψ(3770)p\bar{p}\rightarrow ψ(3770), which is useful information for the future PANDA experiment, is estimated to be either (9.8±5.79.8\pm5.7) nb (<17.2<17.2 nb at 90% C.L.) or (425.6±42.9)(425.6\pm42.9) nb.

Study of J/psi->eta phi pi+pi- at BESIII

Based on a sample of 2.25×108J/ψ2.25\times 10^{8} J/ψ events taken with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we present the results of a study of the decay J/ψ→ηϕπ+π−J/ψ\to ηϕπ^{+}π^{-}. The Y(2175)Y(2175) resonance is observed in the invariant mass spectrum of ϕf0(980)ϕf_{0}(980) with a statistical significance of greater than 10σ10σ. The corresponding mass and width are determined to be M=2200±6(stat.)±5(syst.)MeV/c2M=2200\pm 6 \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 5\mathrm{(syst.)} \mathrm{MeV}/c^{2} and Γ=104±15(stat.)±15(syst.)Γ=104\pm 15\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 15\mathrm{(syst.)} MeV, respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be B(J/ψ→ηY(2175)\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\toηY(2175), Y(2175)→ϕf0(980)Y(2175)\to ϕf_{0}(980), f0(980)→π+π−)=(1.20±0.14(stat.)±0.37(syst.))×10−4f_{0}(980)\to π^{+}π^{-})= (1.20\pm 0.14\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.37 \mathrm{(syst.)})\times 10^{-4}. The results are consistent within errors with those of previous experiments. We also measure the branching fraction of J/ψ→ϕf1(1285)J/ψ\to ϕf_1(1285) with f1(1285)→ηπ+π−f_1(1285)\to ηπ^{+}π^{-} and set upper limits on the branching fractions for J/ψ→ϕη(1405)J/ψ\to ϕη(1405)/ϕX(1835)ϕX(1835)/ϕX(1870)ϕX(1870) with η(1405)η(1405)/X(1835)X(1835)/X(1870)→ηπ+π−X(1870)\to ηπ^{+}π^{-} at the 90\% confidence level.

The COMPASS Setup for Physics with Hadron Beams

The main characteristics of the COMPASS experimental setup for physics with hadron beams are described. This setup was designed to perform exclusive measurements of processes with several charged and/or neutral particles in the final state. Making use of a large part of the apparatus that was previously built for spin structure studies with a muon beam, it also features a new target system as well as new or upgraded detectors. The hadron setup is able to operate at the high incident hadron flux available at CERN. It is characterised by large angular and momentum coverages, large and nearly flat acceptances, and good two and three-particle mass resolutions. In 2008 and 2009 it was successfully used with positive and negative hadron beams and with liquid hydrogen and solid nuclear targets. This article describes the new and upgraded detectors and auxiliary equipment, outlines the reconstruction procedures used, and summarises the general performance of the setup.

Hadron Transverse Momentum Distributions in Muon Deep Inelastic Scattering at 160 GeV/cc

Multiplicities of charged hadrons produced in deep inelastic muon scattering off a 6^6LiD target have been measured as a function of the DIS variables xBjx_{Bj}, Q2Q^2, W2W^2 and the final state hadron variables pTp_T and zz. The pT2p_T^2 distributions are fitted with a single exponential function at low values of pT2p_T^2 to determine the dependence of ⟨pT2⟩\langle p_T^2 \rangle on xBjx_{Bj}, Q2Q^2, W2W^2 and zz. The zz-dependence of ⟨pT2⟩\langle p_T^2 \rangle is shown to be a potential tool to extract the average intrinsic transverse momentum squared of partons, ⟨k⊥2⟩\langle k_{\perp}^2 \rangle, as a function of xBjx_{Bj} and Q2Q^2 in a leading order QCD parton model.

Measurement of the Cross Section for High-p_T Hadron Production in Scattering of 160 GeV/c Muons off Nucleons

The differential cross section for production of charged hadrons with high transverse momenta in scattering of 160\,GeV/cc muons off nucleons at low photon virtualities has been measured at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The results, which cover transverse momenta from 1.1\,GeV/cc to 3.6\,GeV/cc, are compared to a perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) calculation, in order to evaluate the applicability of pQCD to this process in the kinematic domain of the experiment. The shape of the calculated differential cross section as a function of transverse momentum is found to be in good agreement with the experimental data, but the absolute scale is underestimated by next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD. The inclusion of all-order resummation of large logarithmic threshold corrections reduces the discrepancy from a factor of three to four to a factor of two. The dependence of the cross section on the pseudo-rapidity and on virtual photon energy fraction is investigated. Finally the dependence on the charge of the hadrons is discussed.

Study of Σ(1385) and Ξ(1321) hyperon and antihyperon production in deep inelastic muon scattering

Large samples of Λ, Σ(1385) and Ξ(1321) hyperons produced in deep-inelastic muon scattering off a ^6LiD target were collected with the COMPASS experimental setup at CERN. The relative yields of Σ(1385)^+, Σ(1385)^-, \barΣ(1385)^-, \barΣ(1385)^+, Ξ(1321)^-, and \barΞ(1321)^+ hyperons decaying into Λ(\barΛ)πwere measured. The heavy hyperon to Λand heavy antihyperon to \barΛ yield ratios were found to be in the range 3.8% to 5.6% with a relative uncertainty of about 10%. They were used to tune the parameters relevant for strange particle production of the LEPTO Monte Carlo generator.

Transverse target spin asymmetries in exclusive ρ0ρ^0 muoproduction

Exclusive production of ρ0ρ^0 mesons was studied at the COMPASS experiment by scattering 160 GeV/cc muons off transversely polarised protons. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal asymmetries were measured as a function of Q2Q^2, xBjx_{Bj}, or pT2p_{T}^{2}. The sin⁡ϕS\sin ϕ_S asymmetry is found to be −0.019±0.008(stat.)±0.003(syst.)-0.019 \pm 0.008(stat.) \pm 0.003(syst.). All other asymmetries are also found to be of small magnitude and consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties. Very recent calculations using a GPD-based model agree well with the present results. The data is interpreted as evidence for the existence of chiral-odd, transverse generalized parton distributions.

D* and D Meson Production in Muon Nucleon Interactions at 160 GeV/c

The production of D* and D mesons in inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off a ^6LiD target has been investigated with the COMPASS spectrometer at CERN for 0.003 (GeV/c)^2 < Q^2 < 10 (GeV/c)^2 and 3x10^-5< x_Bj < 0.1. The study is based on 8100 events where a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected subsequently to a D*+ or D*- decay, and on 34000 events, where only a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected. Kinematic distributions of D*, D and K*_2 are given as a function of their energy E, transverse momentum p_T, energy fraction z, and of the virtual photon variables nu, Q^2 and x_Bj. Semi-inclusive differential D* production cross-sections are compared with theoretical predictions for D* production via photon-gluon fusion into open charm. The total observed production cross-section for D*+/- mesons with laboratory energies between 22 and 86 GeV is 1.9 nb. Significant cross-section asymmetries are observed between D*+ and D*- production for nu<40 GeV and z>0.6.

Exclusive rho^0 muoproduction on transversely polarised protons and deuterons

The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A_UT in hard exclusive production of rho^0 mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E^q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q^2, x_B and p_t^2 dependence of A_UT is presented in a wide kinematic range. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E^u and E^d approximately cancel.

Experimental investigation of transverse spin asymmetries in muon-p SIDIS processes: Collins asymmetries

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a 160 GeV positive muon beam and a transversely polarised NH_3 target. The Collins asymmetry of the proton was extracted in the Bjorken x range 0.003<x<0.7. These new measurements confirm with higher accuracy previous measurements from the COMPASS and HERMES collaborations, which exhibit a definite effect in the valence quark region. The asymmetries for negative and positive hadrons are similar in magnitude and opposite in sign. They are compatible with model calculations in which the u-quark transversity is opposite in sign and somewhat larger than the d-quark transversity distribution function. The asymmetry is extracted as a function of Bjorken xx, the relative hadron energy zz and the hadron transverse momentum p_T^h. The high statistics and quality of the data also allow for more detailed investigations of the dependence on the kinematic variables. These studies confirm the leading-twist nature of the Collins asymmetry.

Experimental investigation of transverse spin asymmetries in muon-p SIDIS processes: Sivers asymmetries

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a 160 GeV positive muon beam and a transversely polarised NH_3 target. The Sivers asymmetry of the proton has been extracted in the Bjorken x range 0.003<x<0.7. The new measurements have small statistical and systematic uncertainties of a few percent and confirm with considerably better accuracy the previous COMPASS measurement. The Sivers asymmetry is found to be compatible with zero for negative hadrons and positive for positive hadrons, a clear indication of a spin-orbit coupling of quarks in a transversely polarised proton. As compared to measurements at lower energy, a smaller Sivers asymmetry for positive hadrons is found in the region x > 0.03. The asymmetry is different from zero and positive also in the low x region, where sea-quarks dominate. The kinematic dependence of the asymmetry has also been investigated and results are given for various intervals of hadron and virtual photon fractional energy. In contrast to the case of the Collins asymmetry, the results on the Sivers asymmetry suggest a strong dependence on the four-momentum transfer to the nucleon, in agreement with the most recent calculations.

First Measurement of Chiral Dynamics in π^- γ-> π^- π^- π^+

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated the π^- γ-> π^- π^- π^+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt(s) < 5 m(π), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t' < 0.001 (GeV/c)^2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3π-invariant mass m(3π) = sqrt(s) were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of s\sqrt{s} with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Leading and Next-to-Leading Order Gluon Polarisation in the Nucleon and Longitudinal Double Spin Asymmetries from Open Charm Muoproduction

The gluon polarisation in the nucleon was measured using open charm production by scattering 160 GeV/c polarised muons off longitudinally polarised protons or deuterons. The data were taken by the COMPASS collaboration between 2002 and 2007. A detailed account is given of the analysis method that includes the application of neural networks. Several decay channels of D^0 mesons are investigated. Longitudinal spin asymmetries of the D meson production cross-sections are extracted in bins of D^0 transverse momentum and energy. At leading order QCD accuracy the average gluon polarisation is determined as (Delta g/G)^LO=-0.06 +/- 0.21 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) at the scale <mu^2> ~13 (GeV/c)^2 and an average gluon momentum fraction <x>~ 0.11. For the first time, the average gluon polarisation is also obtained at next-to-leading order QCD accuracy as (Delta g/G)^NLO = -0.13 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +/- 0.15 (syst.) at the scale <mu^2> ~ 13 (\GeV/c)^2 and <x> ~ 0.20.

Leading order determination of the gluon polarisation from DIS events with high-p_T hadron pairs

We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Delta g/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised ^6LiD target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x_g covering the range 0.04 < x_g < 0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on x_g. Their average is Delta g/g = 0.125 +/- 0.060 (stat.) +/- 0.063 (syst.) at x_g=0.09 and a scale of mu^2 = 3 (GeV/c)^2.

Transverse spin effects in hadron-pair production from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

First measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hadron-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised ^6LiD (deuteron) and NH_3 (proton) targets are presented. The data were taken in the years 2002-2004 and 2007 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/c at the CERN SPS. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity distribution functions, without involving the Collins effect as in single hadron production. The sizeable asymmetries measured on the NH_ target indicate non-vanishing u-quark transversity and two-hadron interference fragmentation functions. The small asymmetries measured on the ^6LiD target can be interpreted as indication for a cancellation of u- and d-quark transversities.

Collins and Sivers asymmetries for pions and kaons in muon-deuteron DIS

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions.

The Fluorescence Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a hybrid detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It combines a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level together with a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The fluorescence detector comprises 24 large telescopes specialized for measuring the nitrogen fluorescence caused by charged particles of cosmic ray air showers. In this paper we describe the components of the fluorescence detector including its optical system, the design of the camera, the electronics, and the systems for relative and absolute calibration. We also discuss the operation and the monitoring of the detector. Finally, we evaluate the detector performance and precision of shower reconstructions.
